The definitions indicate women sometimes use words different than men emotionally. Research indicates that female thought processing can be quite different. Excerpts from the bestseller The Female Brain (Louann Brizendine M.D. 2006) include “Our distinct female and male brain operating systems are mostly compatible and adept, but they perform and accomplish the same goals and tasks using different circuits” (p4&5). So our brains are wired differently.

While the Wemen’s Dictionary definitions indicate much peril for men, what is the real danger to men? “The principal hub of both emotion and memory formation – the hippocampus – is also larger in the female brain, as is the circuitry for language and observing emotion.” (p5) Women have more emotional brainware than men. Duh. “… once her faster verbal circuits get going, they cause her to to unleash a barrage of angry words that a man can’t match.” (p131) Yikes. Women have men outgunned in a verbal firefight.

Do women really want to fight? “… girls are motivated-on a molecular and a neurological level-to ease and even prevent social conflict. Maintaining the relationship at all costs is the female brain’s goal.” (p40) “The female brain has a far more negative alert reaction to relationship conflict and rejection than does the male brain. Men often enjoy interpersonal conflict and competition; they even get a positive boost from it. (p41) While men can enjoy a good fight, more likely a fight with a woman won’t be good.

“In women, conflict is more likely to set in motion a cascade of negative chemical reactions, creating feelings of stress, upset, and fear. Just the thought that there might be a conflict will be read by the female brain as threatening the relationship, and bring with it the real concern that the next conversation …will be their last.” (p41). So women don’t want to threaten a relationship.

“the female brain developed an additional step in processing and avoiding conflict and anger” , a series of circuits that hijack the emotion and chew on it. ” (p130) So men have some time to disarm women before a fight.

Can a lame excuse, a logical lie, or baffling the buxom with bull.. pre-empt an ambush? “Women know things about the people around them … at a gut level. Gut feelings are not just free-floating emotional states but actual physical sensations that convey meaning to certain areas in the brain. Some of this increased gut feeling may have to do with the number of cells available in a woman’s brain to track body sensations. The areas of the brain that track gut feelings are larger and more sensitive in the female brain … overall, the female brain is gifted at quickly assessing the thoughts, beliefs, and intentions of others, based on the smallest hints.” (p120-121) Thus her gut feelings know your real thoughts and mere words won’t work.

At the gut level, is there a silver bullet that will keep the peace? “oxytocin is naturally released in the brain after a twenty-second hug from a partner-sealing the bond between the huggers and triggering the brain’s trust circuits.” (p68) “In both males and females, oxytocin causes relaxation, fearlessness, bonding, and contentment with each other. And to maintain its effects long-term, the brain’s attachment system needs repeated, almost daily activation through oxytocin stimulated by closeness and touch.” (p72) Mercy, hugs help hugely!
