Night Fear
I’m running through my nightmare
I can’t seem to catch my breath
Whatever the Hell is chasing me
Surely intends my death
I can’t see where I’m going
I don’t know where I’ve been
My heart is pounding like a drum
And my muscles are on fire
I’ve no idea what I’m running from
And things are seeming mighty grim
A deathly chill fills my soul
And the light is getting dim
A glance behind me shows teeth & shadows
I can feel the rumble of it’s fearsome tread
I can sense the beast behind me
My thoughts are filled with dread
My legs are moving faster
But I think I’m slowing down
The panting of my pursuer
stirs the air around my head
Somewhere in the pit of my soul
I know it’s just a dream
But until I wake
I’ll tell you my friend
I ain’t about to stop.

- Cup of Joe
According to Robert A Heinlein coffee comes in 5 descending stages.
Coffee
Java
Jamoke
Joe
and Carbon RemoverBack in my days as a US Marine we referred to coffee that was very poor quality as a cup of Joe.
Which fits with your explanation that coffee was the drink of the common man in the 1930’s. During the Depression people couldn’t afford to buy coffee as often as today and they would re-use their coffee grounds over and over with the quality of the coffee thus produced getting lower each time.
