    Awful can definitely be used in a positive way.

    For example, you can tell your favorite gal that she looks “awfully beautiful”.

    There, I did it. I brought a positive “awful” back.

    In Response to the question is aweful used in its original positive sense today? IT IS!! A derivative of the english word Aweful(ly) is used in a positive context in north east Scotland. the scottish word is affa (means awefully). It is typically used by older residences of North scotland in a phrase: “affa fine” in response to “how are you” type questions. See http://www.aboutaberdeen.com/doric.php for proof of the scots word.

    Marina;

    What is the “origin” of the word, “Dude”?

    or the expression, “pedal to the metal!”

    since I’m from the “motor city!”

    LOL

    I want to see a new episode of “Hot for Words” something awful.

    Sounds like “awful” was brought low by the power of western slang.
