    i heard sergeant came from the french ser – meaning to tighten or keep together, and geant – meaning people. in the army, the sergeant is the highest ranking in the mobile units. then the lieutenant “holds the place” and the capitan is the “head of the regiment” – and they sit in a chair all day.

    while on the topic, could i please ask you where the word [sapper] or [sappeur] came from (i’m not sure of the english spelling).
