So when it rained so hard that the roof became soaked through to the inside and the mice had to abandon ship, the cats and dogs went to work on them, causing quite a commotion, no doubt. But in order to exaggerate such an event to the proper respectability level, tall-tale tellers had to stretch it out to include the larger animals as well so as not to be outdone by all those who merely saw mice running out of their ceilings.
