alx,

The same is happening here in the U.S. Many universities offer lectures as Podcasts. Harvard among others have “extension schools” available free at the online itunes store. Some universities such as Duke University provide students with mp3 players.

The university setting offers many kids in the U.S. their first experience of living independently as an adult. This is a defining period of socialization, and an increasing amount of it takes place in a digital environment. An environment in which the individual is both isolated and integrated, dissatisfied and satisfied, confused?

I expect this will have an impact upon social behavior and self identity as students continue further into adulthood. As to what changes will occur as society adapts to its digital environment, who can predict?

I use to get personal feedback from professors, now I get emails. These emails rarely convey to me that I am being personally recognized. Just my work is being commented on. Work that I increasingly feel disconnected with. Does Marxist social theory apply to intellectual product? …OK time to stop.

Your English is fine. Communication received. I’d apologize for my Russian. But I don’t have any. I do have a lot of bad Spanish though, I’m a popular joke in Nicaragua.

A post on the muscle-man-or-mouse thread caught my attention. An exchange between kazon and prospero811. prospero811 recognized the obvious nature of kazon’s request and then politely responded with a very educated and eloquent response. Ah, the power of reason.

  • Marina,

I agree. Do you think that as this becomes commonplace and accepted on the Internet that such behavior increases in public? The internet can be seen as a region that contributes to changes in language, behavior and social norms. How much will Internet socialization change public socialization? By the way I think that you are contributing to the social discourse in a very positive manner. Thank you and congratulations on your success.

  • alx,

I live in Ohio, just above Kentucky. You would be happy to know that studies indicate that accents defining broad regions in the U.S. are being maintained over time. However small regional variations of accents are drifting into the larger. Yet you will not find a proud Kentuckian or Ohioan that would admit to having similar accents. No way in hail.

  • It is late and I don’t want to look through my old text books, I have forgotten the correct term for changes in language during social exchanges. As in when one switches to a professional form and then back to personal form. This would include changes in slang, jargon, etc. I would argue that people are ignoring the appropriate situations to use various languages, written or spoken. It is not a case that a certain type of language is fundamentally good or bad, just misused.

i just noticed that your not on twitter. many of those that frequent hfw utilize twitter as well. i think you would find twitter very entertaining and informative. from your posts i assume you lean toward the conservative right wing party in the u.s.

there are many conservatives that use twitter to connect with others with common political positions. to keep informed of other ideologies and political perspectives i hope you would follow those with alternative approaches as well, at least to keep informed of what the opposition is thinking. twitter allows you to create lists to keep who you follow separated. you could create one for the right and the left. i think you would find it very useful. let me know what you think.

    here is a link.

the bit of history i referenced was in response to the quote you provided alone “if it is true what does it matter where it came from?” and not the fictitious email in your original post. my recollection of the ethical dilemma caused by the notorious anatomy book had no bearing upon your initial post. i thought your quote was rather interesting. indeed, you would be correct. comparing the two subjects is like comparing apples and oranges.

i apologize if i have ignored the emphasis you had originally placed upon the email you provided. the political opinions and facts conveyed in the letter didn’t interest me. i did note that you opened with, “the bright light of truth…” and thought i should provide additional factual context to the origin of the email in respect to your prompt by noting its questionable origins. further the email ends with, “sincerely, every real american” i found this final remark slightly unprincipled and rather insulting since the unknown author falsely attributed the words to another unsuspecting individual.

regarding politics in general, i abstain from discussing politics here on hfw for various reasons. mainly because such dialogues quickly digress into an uncivil discourse punctuated by inflammatory trolling, juvenile mockery, exaggerations, half truths and ranting tantrums. none of which respects the civility and eloquence of the democratic tradition of political debate that produces the consensus and progress that a functioning politic requires. for such worthy deliberations i go to political forums that are much more appropriate than the hfw site is.

“if it is true, what does it matter where it came from?” interesting quote. reminds me of a bit of history. for sometime there was an anatomy book that was very popular among medical schools throughout europe and the u.s. later it was realized that the book had been in part based on nazi medical research. since this revelation there has been much ethical discussion regarding the use of the material. what do you think?

actually this rather infamous email has been exposed as a hoax for some time. the supposed author ms. kathleen lyday has stated she did not write the email. although i am very sure that the opinions conveyed in the email are commonplace and that there are many authentic letters stating as much being sent routinely to the white house. i have read many eloquently stated critiques of the obama administration that are authentic. many of these open letters have been written by some very respected statesmen and political authorities. I think selecting a correspondence from a reputable source would have provided stronger support for your political position.
