Bye bye indeed, I ship out for the army the 20th. Don’t worry I’m Greek, so this will be cake. Unfortunately -you- will be missing out on my comments for a while. I know this might seem as a downer considering I’ve been a member for so long (these past 2 weeks) but Im sure you will be able to manage.
Good morning teacher.
Happy Valentine’s Day and congratulations on your 100th.
I am new to your site. After stumbling across you on veoh, falling heels over head, I found myself intrigued , hmmm there is a word to investigate.
You are absolutely gorgeous and quite unique. I am glad you exist in this space time.
I wonder… do you have a way to notify users if a word has been investigated?
I would hate to waste your time , or whom ever filters through this, by asking for words that you have covered.
I look forward to your Valentine’s Day card and hopefully several hundred more videos.
Keep up the great work.
Sincerely,
David
Hi Marina
Happy 100th birthday i hope you reach the 1 million so we can have tha chance to learn words from you.(you will be little old until then but i’m sure you will still be hot
) .
how about the meaning of a word we use every day ”The word OK.” whats the origin of that word and why it means everything fine.
cheers antwnis
U.S. President Van Buren was nicknamed, “Old Kinderhook”. I don’t know why. Public frequently referred to him as OK. Later popular U.S. word games generated the, “orl korrekt” phrase instead of, “all correct” which was often abbreviated to OK. I think that “orl korrekt” is the actual origin as this provides the meaning. As opposed to, “Old Kinderhook” Unless it happened like this, “How’s it going?” “It’s going like Old Kinderhook!” Which is a mouthful and became abbreviated to OK. For one of the most popular responses in the world it doesn’t have that interesting of an origin, not bad, just OK

The next word should be convenience!
Marina,
I am a musician, and one of the instruments I play is the piano. I know this used to be called the pianoforte, and I know this reflects that the instrument can play both loudly and softly(or in Italian, piano and forte) but my question is why the name of the instrument got shortened to simply piano.
Thanks!

Love the lessons – keep it up! I was wondering why there is a difference in spelling when referring to the country – Philipenes – vs. the people – Filipino.
Congratulations on making it to 100!
I’m a nursing student and I see a lot of medical abbreviations that have x in them. (Dx means diagnosis, Tx means treatment.) My question is, how come Rx means prescription?

Homage to the Goddess of Love
Is Marina, whose name, she tells us, means “comes from the sea”, a reincarnation of Aphrodite and Venus, who also came from the sea?
Last night I couldn’t sleep; I lay in bed, tossing and turning and replaying Marina’s videos on the screens on the back of my eyelids, until my wife woke up and threw a leg over me to pin me down… but the videos still didn’t stop.
How can this wee slip of a Russian girl, nearly forty years my junior, have such a powerful effect on an old codger about to draw his pension?
I am infatuated, besotted, bewitched and bewildered.
One part of the answer could be that the brain does not necessarily grow old at the same rate as the body, and having been a flyer for most of my life, maybe some of Peter Pan has rubbed off on me.
Another could be that, having grown from the spotty, skinny, shy boy who always sat at the back of the class and never spoke to anyone, to the point where I discovered the truth about success with women, all I am looking for now is a little bit of fantasy: And who will deny that Marina is fantastic?
So maybe, when I stumbled across Marina’s web site, I was preconditioned to be hypnotized.
Marina says, “Intelligence is Sexy: Don’t believe otherwise”
In Buzan’s Book of Genius by Tony Buzan and Raymond Keene, we can read that “there are a number of different kinds of intelligence, that intelligence is never completely in the head, and that a true intelligence involves an interaction between whatever is in your head and the opportunities that are around you in the environment.”
Clearly Marina is using her head and her environment as well as her other natural gifts to become successful; and success has always been an attraction to the opposite sex. But what is meant by “Sexy”? Unfortunately, sex is synonymous with genitalia and copulation and I do worry a little that she is attracting the prurient element of the internet. However, she seems to be smart enough to avoid putting any personal details into the public domain, which will, one hopes, make it as difficult as possible for any potential stalkers.
For my part, I think what attracts me is as multifaceted as the ten different kinds of intelligence, but some factors are in the background whilst others are more obvious. For example, I do not start to get horny when I see her image, (maybe that is just a function of my waning testosterone levels) and whilst it is fascinating to watch those two tortoises head butting each other under her shirt as she talks, what I find most engaging are all her mannerisms, the way she flashes and rolls her eyes as she switches from remembering what she wants to say next to constructing the sentence, the way she moves and inclines her head, arches her neck and tosses her hair, the way the corners of her mouth twitch as she thinks of something amusing or puzzling, etc.
In short, it is her animation which is so interesting; this is why I find the still pictures of her in daring outfits less “sexy” than her videos, even when, in the video, she is modestly attired.
In fact, my favourite of all her videos is the one on Werewolves, where there is no sign of cleavage or flesh below her jawline. In that video she looks so cute and cuddly, like a Labrador Retriever puppy wrapped in a shawl. So, in answer to her question in the 100th video, “would we still watch her if she wore a shawl wrapped round her head and covered everything up?”, I say, “Not only yes, but HELL YES!”, though I admit I would be disappointed if she wore a burqa. Even then there would still be the eyes and that sexy, husky voice.
So, dear Marina, whatever it is that you are doing, you are doing all right… Don’t stop! Because I just love this feeling I get when I see you. I feel like a teenager again with his first crush and it feels GREAT. You are making at least one old man very happy. Can it be my mid-life crisis arriving at last? If so, I’m going to live to 130 and I really hope you can keep doing what you’re doing for 65 more years.
HAPPY VALENTINES DAY
Much Love from your devoted student
Bob
Have you been teachers pet yet, nyet? This was quite a story & understood.
I had a real long comment typed up once after a long walk past some country farms, smelling the smells of the physical world in which I breath & function. I was vowing to quit using the computer to talk to people I knew I would never meet, I hit submit comment & it just disappeared, vanished, all my soul searching, pouring out my heart on virtual ink…gone. I spent probably two & a half hours writing & editing my comment…gone. Maybe it ended up on another blog or something LOL. Anyhow I’m still hangin around being a pest & keeping & eye on teach’ hoping she is happy & fulfilled in her endevours.
I do feel I have met folks here, although in a different way & I always like hearing from the HFW website & friends. I guess its fair to say that.
I’m still old school enough that I still struggle with expressing myself without vocal expression, but I seem to have formed an affection for a lot of the folks that post here, although I don’t reply to all. I wish I had the time to.
“centum” Kudos Marina. I too was hooked when your womens dictionary was featured. Glad to see you seem to be having fun making the vid’s still. Allways “gives me chuckle” As per the question @ 1:42-1:46 or so of this video Yes , affirmative, aye, oui… You are a gifted young lady & have an ability to atract people thats more than just seduction. Stay classy & mysterious. Cheers!
Hello Faves, I have a shallow infatuation with you. How about that word, infatuation. Another one I just ran into is floundering. *swoons* Thanks!

No, Marina, not green,
Green is so not your colour.
You may be both an Owl (learned and wise) and a Pussycat (sweet and sexy) but keep green for the boat… and even then be cautious.
Blargh!
This was a comment to the last post!
Echo…echo…?
Before you take a sip, I’m a guy and this isn’t a tea party.
The correct spelling is teetotaler or teetotaller, I believe, even though word check is marking it incorrect. It basically means someone who is abstaining from drinking alcohol or possibly other nefarious substances. In my punk rock days someone who abstained from drinking alcohol, etc. would be called straight edge. Straight edge sounds so much hardcore than teetotaler. Other similar references include, “dry” or “sober” and “on the wagon”. I recall one theory that argued that it originated in England as some type of pre Alcoholics Anonymous jargon. I do know that it has nothing to do with tea.

This was a comment to last post!
Hi Marina,
Eleanor Roosevelt once said “A woman is like a bag of tea, you never know how strong she is until you put her in hot water.”
As an expert on woman, I think she is right. But as an man I say “A woman is like a cup of tea, you never know how hot she is till you put her to your lips.”
Ok, Here is my request. What is the origin of the word “Tea Totaler”
Good day!
Woot – congratulations on 100 videos! Here’s to 100 more, and continued success – you absolutely deserve it!
Hi Marina,
What is the make and model of your web cam? I’m looking for a decent web cam at a reasonable price and I’ve noticed that your web cam always seems to be in focus, fortunately, and your videos always show you in a very good light
It’s called a Macbook clingenf! The one built into the laptop… sorry about that.. but you should sell your PC and get a macbook anyway… your life will be SOOO much better
that’s right.. clingenf buy Mac Pro and your iLife will change drasticaly for good of course
clingenf,
I’ve used Macs for over ten years and I’m currently on an iMac Intel machine. Macs can be more expensive but well worth it. Best deals are online, the Apple online store offers discounts to students, at least here in the U.S. Mac’s operating system is significantly better and they are far less prone to viruses and bugs. Their customer support is above all and their apple care program can be a worth while investment. Once you get your Mac there is very little additional software you may need, so you are ready to go straight out of the box. If I sound like a Mac commercial I apologize. I should try and, “Think Different.”

Is she likes mac… tell us the origin of the word Apple

Hi Marina,
What is the history of “pork” as in “pork barrel politics?”
To the illustrious Princess of our beloved Republic, Marina:
I remember you investigating the work geek and had a conversation with a friend about the differences between GEEK, NERD, and DORK. I was wondering if you might investigate the origin of the other two and compare them for us?

Congrats on your 100th video! just keep up the pace that’s all. Anyway what’s the origin as you’re all wet?
hello Marina, I was just wondering, where does the word stalker come from and its origins. You know… according to the dictionary, stalker is a man that follows a woman over a period of time in order to have sex with her or kill her. My friends define that stalker is a person that is updated with the most current news in a person’s life cause he/she “stalks” them and knows everything about them….. or knows from other sources or people the most current news from someone’s life which is totally different from the dictionary! wonder which one is true? can you help me out?
Greetings Philologist teacher!
Congratulations on your 100th video!!
Now, I want to know why in America its named, “Soccer”, instead of football…
I mean football is a more suitable name as you actually kick the ball with your foot, and in American Football you mostly run around with the ball in your arms. Did they just changed the name to Soccer because the name Football was already used in the other sport?
Hope to get an answer!
alleTiger.
In the beginning there was just football…
then, I believe in 1864 or thereabouts, at a public school in Rugby, Warwickshire, England (for you Americans, read a private school – we are two nations DIVIDED by a common language as Winston Churchill said) a schoolboy playing football, without having learned the rules first, picked up the ball and ran with it in his arms.
Thus the game of Rugby Football was invented and, to distinguish the two games in conversation, the original game came to be referred to as Association Football as it was administered by the Football Association.
Well, I suppose people thought that it was too much of a mouthful, so the slang term Soccer came into use for AsSOCiation Football and RUGger for Rugby Football.
Hello ,
Dear Marina , I’m all new , incoming , but still ///
First thanks to making me move ” Hot” Forward

Could you please light me up on this point ?
You make great Job , and I do hope that one day , all the pretty girl like you in the world will love brain instead of money , and then make intelligence a priority instead of owning things .
Your brend new french correspondant .

Could you add “Out of Pocket” to the list of requests. It is a phrase used to indicate “not available” or “unreachable”
Thanks !!
I thought that expression meant something like “personally paid for”… you know, like “My boss wouldn’t let me expense the charge, so I had to pay out of pocket.”
Congrats, Marina.
I must say, though, I’d expected you to give us the origin of “hundred” in there somewhere.
Ok take #2 on a word, this time I checked the list lol.
What is the origin of the word :Mercinary:, as in a hired soldier.
Hi Marina,
You know when a magician does a trick, like pulling a rabbit out of a hat, they alway say something like Abracadabra, or Alakazam?
Well, what is the origine of the word “Abracadabra”?
Much love

Dear Marina,
Happy one-hundredth birthday!
jcnick.
Hello Marina,
Congratulations on reaching the century mark (from the Latin centuria). I’m grateful for all of your lessons (from the Latin legere).
Perhaps it would be interesting to present the etymology of words with non-european origins for some of your next 100 videos. For example, how about the word potato?
Hotformorewords,
Phileos33
Hi Marina. My all time favorite word is elucidate. If you could let me know of it’s origins I would appreciate it. Thanks a lot.
Congratulations on your 100th great video! Your body of work is very impressive. Did we catch a glimpse of your harlequin and your (boy)friend in the background of this video? I look forward to your next 100 videos!
