This past weekend i was in a musical theater production. i got to explain to the director the meaning behind the phrase “break a leg,” and he was very interested and surprised. he went on to explain it to the whole cast! all thanks to you!

if i were in this position, i would definitely keep them, but without going completely belligerent. there’s a difference between saying “boterschijte is dutch for ‘butter shit,’” while talking about word origins, and saying “hello my dear students, your teacher, hotforwords, is back with another lesson, motherfuckers!”

i’m curious about a little translation here. when you look up latin origins of words, we usually see similarities among many of the latin-based languages. my question is regarding false cognates between english and spanish, and why does “yo” in spanish mean “I?” and another, “embarazada” in spanish means “pregnant.” how can they sound almost identical but mean something completely different?
