Hi Marina, the word is (ZEITGEIST), i think the literal translation is Time ghost or time spirit, but translates into English as “spirit of the times”.

  4. Your talking backwards reminded me of an American Television Program I used to watch called “Twin Peaks”. They would say their lines backwards phonetically and then David Lynch, the director would put the film in reverse for certain scenes. An example below:

  5. johnlebl says: 56

You had asked for another word containing geist, and I had read this a long time ago and hope that I remember it correctly.

Gesundheit is actually a contraction of a German phrase “geist und heit” which means “Spirit and health”, a blessing given when someone sneezes. So without realizing it, we automatically bless someone with a truncated blessing that reflects 3 John1:2 “Beloved, I wish above all things that you may prosper and be in health even as your soul prospers.”

  10. fullmonty says: 50

The FULL MONTY would like to submit a saying to be investigated.
My name is actually Monty and I was wondering if you wouldn’t mind giving a visual presentation of what The FULL Monty really is and where it was originated from?!
Since I have this name I have been known to live up to my name but would much rather have my teacher show me the correct way of pulling it off…
So teach, let me know if you can solve this….

  18. hdvideo says: 42

Please do flash your boobies a little more in your videos please.

    • legendary says: 42.1

dude take from someone who kept on asking her is she did plastic surgery, do not ask her or tell her to do inappropriate stuff. trust me Marina got pissed at me for asking her if she did plastic surgery so dont tell her or ask her to do inappropriate stuff

      • hdvideo says: 42.1.1

She should just come clean & stop acting like she is some ex-playboy model when she isn’t and let everyone know she is either a ex-hooker or ex-stripper? Let everyone know she has FAKE inplants and had plastic surgery because she thinks that the “stripper look” adds something to her lame “hot for words” Theme? I mean they clearly look as fake as a $3.00 bill.

      • Riding in again on my white horse to come to Marina’s defense. One, she looks fantastic. She has beautiful blue eyes that sparkle and flash. She has a wonderful smile, perfect teeth, pouting lips, porcelain skin and sunshine in her hair. Her body is amazing, with supple shoulders, long legs, a nice butt, and fabulous breasts.

It should be obvious to all but the most laughably insensate viewers of her videos that she has had some (rather well done) plastic surgery. Regardless, she looks great, and your question does not deserve an answer.

Keep doing what you’re doing, Marina! And, you look fantastic.

        Eric

      • wow hdvideo that was a good one and you have a point but its still personal and inappropriate i mean can’t you tell that she is going little by little she made an episode saying she is bissextile. It’s not too personal, but personal. so she is going little by little. but still good joke on saying she has $3.00 breast implants

      • you know prospero, or eric, sometime i think that women who getplastic surgery, as in who get themselves breast implants and all that stuff, are degraded.

      • alx says: 42.1.6

isn’t that more like an upgrade? you know, new features and all.

      • legendary – degraded? Why? Improving one’s physical appearance artificially has been going on for thousands of years. People wear make-up and clothes, pierce their ears and other body parts, get tattoos, etc. Many cultures put things in their bodies (lip plates, bones, neck extenders, etc) that are far more dramatic than breast implants. If she likes them, then their fine – we only live once – it’s really not any different in its essence than getting a haircut and a manicure (it’s just a more dramatic artificial modification. And they look fantastic to me!

      • well prospero ur right but it would be good if a woman or a man appreciate what they look like and yea people have to be comfortable with their bodies but think about it, making their bodies artificial, thats not the best option

      • Bob says: 42.1.9

Nice one, alx; definitely an upgrade.
There’s nothing wrong with “fake” breasts (most exciting thing I ever got my hands on actually), provided they are not out of proportion with the rest of the body.
That’s not to say that I think Marina has been enhanced; I don’t think she needs to be anyway.

  19. legendary says: 41

Marina, If anyone does become teacher assisstant, wat r they supposed to do and do u even belive in ghosts, or in ur words, “poltergeist”.

  20. legendary says: 40

Marina why did u put ur words in reverse? oh and did u kno thats another way of subliminal messages. I wonder if u added that to ur subliminal lesson

    • Marina says: 40.1

It’s weird how it sounds German when I do that, huh? Maybe German is just English spoken backwards? Or English is German spoken backwards! Must investigate

      • well sometimes it sounds like like clear english u can see videos about subliminal messages in youtube and they the words backwards sound so clearly… but what is weird is that the words forward sounds normal but backwards… they sound lke other words and it can get scary…

  21. legendary says: 39

lol u look scare Marina. I dont think I have ever seened u that way

  22. nw2394 says: 38

  23. smithercell says: 37

Speaking of unworldly experiences, I was wondering if you could talk about the origin of the word ‘Pandemonium.’ I think it should have an interesting history behind it.

  24. wizardeal says: 35

I posted a video response asking you to find the origin of “Rasgueado” which is a flamenco guitar term describing the technique of using all of the fingers of the right hand to produce fast picking of the notes, but ’someone’ removed all of the video responses again… perhaps you will consider doing a lesson on the word “resgueado” and allow me to post my example of resgueado technique as a response?
That would be very nice, thank you in advance for considering this proposal.

    Your friend and admirer,

    Tim

  25. john_lim says: 34

    hey marina,
first off i love your youtube videos. i have learned a lot of words from you thank you for doing this.

the word i want to know is “lesbo” we are learning about a poet names sappho on greek myth. so far i know lesbo is from the island “isle of lesbo”
my teacher agreed that she would give me extra credit if i could research the word “lesbo” i was wondering if you could help me out on this. thanks again marina !

  26. prospero811 says: 33

    Marina,

Perhaps your evil twin from a previous video is not a twin at all, but doppelganger. If you have a doppelganger for an evil twin, does that mean you can have multiple phantasms?

Let us know in your next video!

    Eric

  27. juutuuppa says: 32

Looks and brains, i’m in HEAVEN! So, what’s the origins of that word?-)

  28. magicy2k says: 30

hi, this may be slightly controversial, but I’d very much like to hear YOUR explanation of the word negro, nigger or nigga. well i know there is a lot of info on its etymology but maybe u can explain some stuff which hasn’t been recorded on paper on a large scale.

i know i can probably do a Wiki search, but i’d rather u explain it so i dont have to read. YAY YA!

    • wizardeal says: 30.1

As the principal of the University of Lexicology, I would have to intervene on Marina’s behalf and state that such a video would be more than slightly controversial as it would be inappropriate for you tube, in that it may be offensive to discuss the origin of such a term, which to me is more “vulgar” than any word describing any sexual act could ever be. Instead, how about a lesson on vulgarity and why the American censors and/or Hollywood consider sex vulgar but murder is Ok but in Europe, sex is Ok but violence is censored?

      • Marina says: 30.1.1

I was thinking I could do the word niggardly and how politicians have been fired over that word even though it has no relation to that other word :?:

      • nw2394 says: 30.1.2

I replied to this – but it came out above for some reason. Grrrr!

        Lets try again.

      • Marina:

I would “stay away” from the “n” word. There is a huge “downside risk” to hurt your public image – with very little upside potential. With so many other words to work with, you don’t need to go there. In some way’s it’s worse than the c-word… which you handled quite nicely, but you did it in the right forum (satelite radio) and you’re a women.

I can see now it would be tempting – but seriously… you’re on a roll, your talented and you don’t need it… risky.

        best to you…
        TR

  30. Do you have any idea about the word ‘boost’?

  31. turtlespeed says: 26

:???: Ummm… the word “Poltergeists” is another word that has “geist” in it and so does “Weltgeist” which is the “World Spirit” accoding to the ancient Greeks during the time of Socrates. The belief that the earth itself has its own living spirit.

    “LADY”

I was reading ‘Joy of Cooking(new edition)” about making/baking bread in preparation for a transatlantic sailing trip (my first) and in the introduction it was stated that the word ‘lady’ was descended/related to the mediaeval term for “DOUGH KNEADER” !!?!!

    thanks for what you do,
    have fun,
    George& Marybeth Ray

  33. hitman says: 24

I knew that geist meant spirit not ghost, because the last FIFA World Cup (In Germany) used a ball called Team Geist,
If a german can explain it i will be grateful
    greeting
    hitman

    • alx says: 24.1

“geist” is kinda hard to translate. it depends on the context how you translate it.

yeah, teamgeist is team spirit. but a poltergeist is a ghost, a noise-making ghost. hegel’s weltgeist is the world mind or spirit. wikipedia states that some english translaters use “spirit-mind” to grasp its meaning.

so, it can mean several things. :/

      • In german geist means all those things, mind spirit, ghost I think the closest English translation would have to be spirit, in the sense that spirit also differs according to the context, which reminds me, I have to stock my spirit cabinet with some good scotch

      • nw2394 says: 24.1.2

Yeah, nigger, niggardly are good words to do.

Nigger being a politically incorrect word is so yesterday anyway. Young people – both black and white use it again – older generation people are just stuck in their guilt and rubbish like that – time to move on.

        Nick

    • hitman says: 24.2

Thanks alx for the explanation

      • In german, “geist” refers to a ghost as the “spirit” of a lost soul.
Zeitgeist, weltgeist and “teamgeist” use the word geist to mean “spirit”
So thats how “poltergeist” means ghost, its the spirit of a lost soul that is noisy probably because it is seeking attention as most lost souils often do….

    • alx says: 24.3

      see here for possible translations.

umm i would lik to request the word SEXY :D hmm this is very interesting.. i never thought there was such career as this.. lol do u get paid for doing this?

  35. errinf says: 22

Do all philologists believe in REAL poltergeists? And how many know the number of the REAL Ghostbusters? Only one, I imagine.

Well I never thought I’d see the day that Marina was frightened by knockers. I’m not afraid of knockers, and I don’t let them distract me from my Hot For Words lesson. They’ll do that if they can get away with it, but I’ve learned to handle knockers firmly and directly so as to get a grasp of the situation. You could say I take a hands-on approach to such knockers.

So, ya, what I take away from this lesson is that poltergeists are unearthly knockers. Anybody else think ‘unearthly knockers’ when they watched this video? Anyone? Or am I the only one here still haunted by the booby humor of the last lesson?

I’m going to cheat a little on my homework and pick a word related to geist. Since I was commenting last lesson about Marina’s great dane (which may have temporarily been shrunken by poltergeists into a pink-eared puppy), I thought I’d pick a ghest instead of a geist. My word is barghest, a spectral hound which is the ghost of a dead dog. A very cool word and a very cool creature of horror fantasy. Maybe instead of calling Ghostbusters (I wonder if Marina was talking to Egan), she just needs to get a barghest to chase those poltergeists away. Or take a page out of ‘The Hound Of the Baskervilles’ and dress that great dane of hers to look like a barghest. That’ll bust those unearthly knockers!

Thanks for the spooky yet informative lesson, Marina. Despite my mockingly knocking those knockers in your video, I seriously did not know that the ‘polter’ part of poltergeist specifically meant knocking. The ghost part was easy to figure from ‘geist’, but I did not know that the entire word basically means a ghost that knocks, and it was indeed a word I was always curious about being a fan of supernatural horror literature. Needless to say, my interest in this video was quite spirited. your trusting student, Errin

p.s. just out of curiosity, does anybody know if Marina’s great dane shows up in any specific video lessons? I believe I saw it in the Harlequin lesson (not sure why the dane was in that particular video, but it was), but was wondering what others it might be in. It is a really beautiful-looking dog, and I don’t think great danes are all that common, as I’ve seen some but not that many. cool hound

    • errinf says: 22.1

p.p.s. Just about to call it a night after watching a couple old lessons after this ‘poltergeist’ one, but I noticed while commenting recently that the clock on your comment system here seems to have not ’sprung forward’ yet, as it seems to be an hour earlier than Pacific Standard Time, and I recall that the comment clock is on PST. Thought I’d mention it because I’m sure our trusty Hot For Words would like it right.

Zeitgeist — spirit of the age.

What is the origin of the word adulterated or unadulterated? Does it have anything to do with becoming an adult? Is that what spoils and taints us?

    Marina.
This was scarry,,with all the knocking and noises. But i didn’t see any polterteist. Thanks for the great lesson.5 stars as always.

  45. I would love to hear the origin of the word sabotage. It sounds very mysterious.

  46. nighteye says: 10

Marina, why does the word rock mean so many things, and where does it originate from?

It can mean a stone, a form of music, a swaying motion and an ecstatic exclamation of awe, to name but a few.

Marina, to put it like this, you rock while rocking a rock to rock music.

  47. geist is also a plant. also known as mallotus peltatus.

i dont know if you do this kind of thing but i would like to know where the expression “Easy-Peasy” came from. i use it all the time and it just occured to me that i dont know its history…but who better to ask then our lovely teach?
