Hey… I was thinking there might be an easier way to help you keep track of everyone’s word requests. Maybe a form outside of the comments that lists the words, who requested them and how many times each word is requested. If I see a plug in in my travels I’ll post another comment.

trgoblin, I was going to do that.. but then I thought the open dialog in the comments was better… people can request a word and others can follow up. I can search the comments instantly in the backend.
If I did a form it would have to output the requests so that everyone could see how many times a word has been requested.. hmm.. maybe it’s a polling type thing… must investigate!
Yes… the dialogue is great. I wanted to answer a couple, but didn’t want to spoil a future lesson for you.
I’m a problem solver and an idea person, and I was thinking it would be hard for me to keep track of all these word requests; I was also thinking ahead to a point where you might have thousands of requests after each lesson.
The polling might help you organize it, but then again, you might get a lot of requests for a word that you have no interest in doing. Seems like staying inspired and creative is what’s most important and this method is working for you. My unsolicited ideas should also come with a grain of salt.
Where have you been? I’m just now discovering all of this and don’t see you around anymore. The comments I’ve read of yours are very insightful…

I’m asking this because you’re an anthropologist.
there’s a book by michel foucault, “abnormal”. kinda hard to summarize its content. it’s about what people or societies considered abnormal throughout history, what was considered “monsters”, and how the view or that group changed over time. it’s also about how the legal or judicial point of view, along with the medical, clerical, and psychological one changed, or evolved. how treatments and facilities changed. how the status of certain medical conditions changed.
anyway, from time to time I get the feeling that in today’s societies, cultures or nations of the “first world” mental or stress-related deseases or disorders incredibly increase. depression, bipolar disorders, stress, you name it. I wonder if the number of people suffering from those things really increased — and if so, why –, or if this is just another change of perception. (jaeggi et. al. 1997: “psychiatry, later psychoanalysis and clinical psychology, ‘create’ the psychological disfunctions that they pretend to discover.” [my awkward translation.])
yo, marina, sorry for asking this question here; this is not an incredibly funny comment, and, as far as I can see, it doesn’t have much to do with language. :/
I’m going to respond to this in parts. The concept of the monster or abnormal seems to be an emergent characteristic of human society. Human societies have developed some diverse cultural practices to survive. However there are universal characteristics and the recognition of the abnormal is one of them. This indicates that it is imperative to basic human survival in some way. Whether or not those that are recognized as abnormal are actually a threat or not is irrelevant to evolutionary processes. Over the course of human evolution it has been a statistical advantage to survival to assume they are a threat. Recognition of the abnormal is a biological and social instinct and a result of evolutionary processes, ignorant of any ethical principals. It is a trait that is here to stay as it is likely in our genes, functioning within the individual and emergent in culture. I like foucault although some of his methods and data are questionable.

This instinct to recognize the abnormal is, I argue, a universal characteristic of human society. However the criteria for abnormal or a modal personality is culturally relative and so to the social response. Each culture develops it’s own institutions and social organizations to efficiently identify and manage abnormal groupings. Mental disorders are apparent in all cultures. Yet characteristics of mental disorders vary from one culture to another. Further a mental disorder may not be considered abnormal if it is within a society’s concept of a modal personality. Psychology and associated fields are authoritative institutions guiding Western society’s conceptions of mental disorder. I would argue that these institutions in fulfilling their social responsibilities are ignoring the relative nature of the abnormal and mental disorders. To admit that human society and behavior is so relative would impair a society’s ability to recognize the abnormal. This limitation or blinding would result in social confusion, anxiety and paranoia. Instead I think that psychology mechanically identifies mental disorders without considering the potential that there is no limit to the varieties of human behavior and the relative nature of modal personalities, mental disorder and the abnormal. This I believe is one reason you recognize an increase in mental disorders. I am not arguing in an absolute sense that mental disorders cannot not have a very real physiological origin.

Is there any universal concept of normality and abnormality?
Within a particular society, normality (or maybe mediocrity or averageness) would be defined by the highest point of a Gaussian curve of population distribution.
On each side of the graph would be varying degrees of abnormality increasing as you get further from the normal line, with genius on the one side and sub-normality (for want of a more politically “correct” term) on the other side.
Without abnormality, surely we would all still be living in caves; there would have been no inventions, no Art, no science, no America even.
People with dreams or unusual talents have always been ridiculed at best or burned at the stake at worst.
I’m not sure where my ramblings are taking me here unless it’s just my way of summarizing what you have written above.

The pilot was for Current TV. They’re still editing it.. etc.. so I don’t know what’s going to happen with it yet.
Somehow I had missed the bit about Marina being concupiscent. I always thought she said, “your TRUSTY Hotforwords” but now I learn that it’s LUSTY as well as BUSTY.
I think they were probably using the word incorrectly, meaning to imply that Marina makes her students lusty and not that she is a wanton woman.
