That was an excellent introduction of Marina and her work. They were obviously smitten by someone who can make philology so enjoyable, and who so obviously enjoys herself doing it. The fact that Marina is operating in a foreign language makes her all the more amazing. The special effects that Marina inserts throughout her sessions are amazing, and add much to the presentations. You Tube has found a treasure here! – Cassowary

  53. Dear Teacher,
You’re sexy enough to drive a man bizerk. Or is it berzirk? I don’t know but the word is sort of strange is it not? I was given an explanation once of its orgins having something to do with butt-naked norsemen running wild, high on mushrooms. I thought of your word mystery solving prowess and would like you to investigate. Where does bizerk (crazy) come from and did a bunch of norsemen do some magic mushroom and tear up the town in assless chaps? Please enlighten all of us.

None of the above, lowbrow! It’s “berserk”.

BTW, there’s a long series of excellent sci-fi novels and stories by Fred Saberhagen about “Berserkers”, which are war robots invented far away and long ago and now running wild trying to eliminate all “badlife” in the Universe (that’s us), in part by relying on suck-up gutless collaborators called “goodlife” (that’s Democrats).

I think the U.S. should up the quota for more Russian immigres.

    • hitman says: 15.1

Don’t worry, we are really happy here!

      • According to U.S. foreign policy if you are happy where you are then you must have something against the U.S. If you have something against the U.S. then you are considered a security threat and likely terrorist. Accordingly the U.S. can kidnap you and hold you in a secret prison. If you do not like where you live and you recognize that the U.S. is the best place to live then you are not a threat. However the U.S. doesn’t want you here anyway because you talk funny. Although if you are abducted you may end up in the secret prison in Vice President Dick Cheney’s basement. The downside is that although you will reside in the U.S. you will not enjoy any rights and you have to eat Mrs. Cheney’s cooking, which is banned under the Geneva Conventions. But the U.S. ignores that anyway.

    • buzzword says: 15.2

I disagree, the U.S. has already increased it’s quota for the extraordinary rendition of foreign nationals to secret prisons.

      • muggins says: 15.2.1

        Buzzward,
I’d love to argue with you, but I don’t think this is a suitable venue.
Do you have a forum or website that we can hash this topic to pieces?

        Hitman,
I didn’t mean to imply that the entire population of Russia wasn’t completely satisfied, if not completely happy, living in Russia. My comment was just my way of complimenting Marina for being absolutely fabulous.

    • buzzword says: 15.3

just being sarcastic, no interest in arguing.

  69. trgoblin says: 14

    Congrats Marina….

I’m glad you’re getting the recognition you deserve, and I hope you stay happy and inspired through it all!

Hey… I was thinking there might be an easier way to help you keep track of everyone’s word requests. Maybe a form outside of the comments that lists the words, who requested them and how many times each word is requested. If I see a plug in in my travels I’ll post another comment.

    Rock on!

    • Marina says: 14.1

trgoblin, I was going to do that.. but then I thought the open dialog in the comments was better… people can request a word and others can follow up. I can search the comments instantly in the backend.

If I did a form it would have to output the requests so that everyone could see how many times a word has been requested.. hmm.. maybe it’s a polling type thing… must investigate!

      • Yes… the dialogue is great. I wanted to answer a couple, but didn’t want to spoil a future lesson for you.

I’m a problem solver and an idea person, and I was thinking it would be hard for me to keep track of all these word requests; I was also thinking ahead to a point where you might have thousands of requests after each lesson.

The polling might help you organize it, but then again, you might get a lot of requests for a word that you have no interest in doing. Seems like staying inspired and creative is what’s most important and this method is working for you. My unsolicited ideas should also come with a grain of salt.

    • darlingj says: 14.2

  73. Dear Teacher

It’s said that any publicity is good publicity, but this was very complimentary which is great. You deserve every good word.

  74. jsmooth5atl says: 9

I really like this video because I remember being one of your first few subscribers and now your this big internet star. You deserve all the success because philology and teaching are your passion. What is this book going to be like a biography or dictionary ?

  75. alx says: 8

    buzzword,

I’m asking this because you’re an anthropologist.
there’s a book by michel foucault, “abnormal”. kinda hard to summarize its content. it’s about what people or societies considered abnormal throughout history, what was considered “monsters”, and how the view or that group changed over time. it’s also about how the legal or judicial point of view, along with the medical, clerical, and psychological one changed, or evolved. how treatments and facilities changed. how the status of certain medical conditions changed.
anyway, from time to time I get the feeling that in today’s societies, cultures or nations of the “first world” mental or stress-related deseases or disorders incredibly increase. depression, bipolar disorders, stress, you name it. I wonder if the number of people suffering from those things really increased — and if so, why –, or if this is just another change of perception. (jaeggi et. al. 1997: “psychiatry, later psychoanalysis and clinical psychology, ‘create’ the psychological disfunctions that they pretend to discover.” [my awkward translation.])

yo, marina, sorry for asking this question here; this is not an incredibly funny comment, and, as far as I can see, it doesn’t have much to do with language. :/

    • buzzword says: 8.1

I’m going to respond to this in parts. The concept of the monster or abnormal seems to be an emergent characteristic of human society. Human societies have developed some diverse cultural practices to survive. However there are universal characteristics and the recognition of the abnormal is one of them. This indicates that it is imperative to basic human survival in some way. Whether or not those that are recognized as abnormal are actually a threat or not is irrelevant to evolutionary processes. Over the course of human evolution it has been a statistical advantage to survival to assume they are a threat. Recognition of the abnormal is a biological and social instinct and a result of evolutionary processes, ignorant of any ethical principals. It is a trait that is here to stay as it is likely in our genes, functioning within the individual and emergent in culture. I like foucault although some of his methods and data are questionable.

    • buzzword says: 8.2

This instinct to recognize the abnormal is, I argue, a universal characteristic of human society. However the criteria for abnormal or a modal personality is culturally relative and so to the social response. Each culture develops it’s own institutions and social organizations to efficiently identify and manage abnormal groupings. Mental disorders are apparent in all cultures. Yet characteristics of mental disorders vary from one culture to another. Further a mental disorder may not be considered abnormal if it is within a society’s concept of a modal personality. Psychology and associated fields are authoritative institutions guiding Western society’s conceptions of mental disorder. I would argue that these institutions in fulfilling their social responsibilities are ignoring the relative nature of the abnormal and mental disorders. To admit that human society and behavior is so relative would impair a society’s ability to recognize the abnormal. This limitation or blinding would result in social confusion, anxiety and paranoia. Instead I think that psychology mechanically identifies mental disorders without considering the potential that there is no limit to the varieties of human behavior and the relative nature of modal personalities, mental disorder and the abnormal. This I believe is one reason you recognize an increase in mental disorders. I am not arguing in an absolute sense that mental disorders cannot not have a very real physiological origin.

That was great! (even though I was hoping they were going to have you on the show live to interview you)

Ditto with JD’s comment… please let us know when and where your TV pilot will be seen, and when you book comes out.

Hmmm, by the way… what ever happened with that vote on the right that’s been going on for months now? I think the calendar has won out pretty handily, don’t you? When can I get my hands on my teacher’s calendar? ( Although, I wouldn’t complain if you make everything on the list either! :)

  82. JD says: 1

That was an awesome segment :!: I think they did a super job and I bet you get a ton of subscribers tomorrow. Did you really shot a TV pilot? What is the name of the show and when will it air? Keep up the great work and I look forward to seeing you on many more TV programs… And of course in many many more YouTube videos.

    • JD says: 1.1

BTW Marina – Did they come up with “concupiscent” on their own, or did you help them out with that one. In either case, they hit the nail on the head in using it to describe you.

      • Marina says: 1.1.1

They came up with it! That’s awesome that they did :-)

The pilot was for Current TV. They’re still editing it.. etc.. so I don’t know what’s going to happen with it yet.

      • Bob says: 1.1.2

Somehow I had missed the bit about Marina being concupiscent. I always thought she said, “your TRUSTY Hotforwords” but now I learn that it’s LUSTY as well as BUSTY.
I think they were probably using the word incorrectly, meaning to imply that Marina makes her students lusty and not that she is a wanton woman.
Shouln’t they have said Marina is concupiscible?
