  17. I’ve been looking for a report card all year – haven’t seen but ONE. Must be that damn evil (fork) twin sister who has abandoned her website, huh? I guess with all the book deals, calendars, radio shows et al, this is just another loose end left to hang Why does this remind me of my flaky sister who fails to follow through? FYI – I have two sisters and the one who comes here as TwitTheGreat is aces and eights – A number one! Maybe Marina will send us out a Christmas card this year? …or not

  31. Hi, I really like this web site, is very educational and interestinh to know the origins/meaning of some commonly used words; that, seems to be REALLY GREAT  to me.
With that point set up clear, I would like the origins/meaning of some words: music, adore, praise, worship, humble and sin.
I think it would be interesting to investigate some of/all these words.
Well, thanks a lot and I hope you can let me know what I’m expecting  .

Report Cards—Marina—maybe or anyway, I think if you produced a deck of cards, (with your sister) and you could exploit the pretty pictures of yourself. Then we would have portable cards to play with. Education and school and REPORTcards. Queen of hearts ect. Your lessons would take the next step. Ace to space. Work for sale. bees are good

Don’t count on it. I am unsure why some people get them while others do not. Maybe she was trying to personalize them too much and just got overwhelmed. It is just a cute gesture any way I suppose.

The value is in what is learned rather than the grade, or at least it should be.

  53. bobsully says: 68

  76. You’re very busy, but it’s been nearly two months since you said that report cards would be coming out *soon* — do you plan on doing it, or is it nothing more than a ruse to hold our attention? It’s just annoying that they haven’t been released to us in a timely manner, that’s all.

If you read this, then thank you for, well, reading it. And I look forward to future lessons!

P.S. If this seems harsh, I apologize, but my patience is rather fleeting. Sorry.

  81. I know you are a very busy woman, what with all the television appearances and the almost-daily philology lessons on youtube.com, but would you be so kind as to give us all a date of when you will post the report cards. It would be greatly appreciated, I’m sure, by all of your viewers to know.

    Thanks for all the lessons,
    desolation06

    • Sorry, I got to fix this real fast. The last sentence was supposed to be this:

“It would be greatly appreciated, I’m sure, if you were to let all of your viewers know.”

I look forward to future lessons!

      Sincerely,

wow  it would be cool  never the homework was so fun

  101. hellrhyme13 says: 15

The report card system could be automated, say for instance like a Java applet. I know in many online colleges they do something like this to test one’s aptitude at a certain subject.
The answers could be multiple choice. However, many people may grab the dictionary to look up words and for a test, that would be cheating. This kind of ruins the idea of posting a top score, as everyone might be in the same place, unless you add a timer for each question; put a time limit on the different questions, thus giving the individual little time to thumb through the dictionary.

    • set up two profiles. get on one just to get the questions, and it doesn’t matter if you answer them. go look them up. then go to your real profile and get an A. the timed idea is still to easy to get around. im not trying to bash your idea, just trying to help you perfect it.

  102. lunar wolf says: 14

I missed my homework, can someone fill me in please?

  103. What do we have to do to have to stay after class?

  104. okay4now says: 12

Report cads = fun & interesting project for you, HFW; it’s also another way to substantiate your whole show. For me, however, as one who never indends to do too well in this ‘class’, imagine what little horrors will be created every time I receive a little something reminding me that I’m not doing as well as…oh, well.

  105. lupin says: 11

Again, a really cool video. This is one of my first comments, I like your videos because I like getting a chance to learn new and interesting words, and finding out where they started is always pretty cool as well. In that line, I will also be looking forward to your book! That all being said I have a word that I saw a while back that I am curious to the origins of.
The word is “wilkin” which I do believe means the sky. I was just curious about the entomology of that particular word. Keep up the great work!

  106. alfauno says: 10

I am in the same team of blackwolf!
I don’t ever want to pass this class (unless the teacher is change) ;)

    • blackwolf says: 10.1

Then I guess we are the first two who are sitting in the very front of the class, take the best notes possible, doing the homework, and studying every inch of video (if you know what I mean), and still praying to fail this course. GIVE ME AN “F”!!!!! But I agree, if the teacher changes or there is a substitute, I’M PLAYING “HOOKIE” (there is a word for ya!).
Hey Marina, since you teach a class, you are sending out a report card, and I know that “F” stands for FAIL, what do the other letters of a grade stand for? Hell, if you want, you can make up your own meanings using the letter grades. Also, you should use the song “HOT FOR TEACHER” on your videos. Sorry that is the television production in me!!!!
      Luvs

      • Great reference to the Country Joe MacDonald “Fish Cheer!”

When I was in public school, they didn’t use “F” for a regular letter grade. So the only way to get an “F” was to fail at a course that had been designated pass/fail only such as driver ed (in K-12 these courses were extremely rare). Our grades were typically only A through E and I will admit that I received a few “E” grades, especially in penmanship.

        (”F!”) gimme a “U” (”U!”) gimme a “C” (”C!”) etc. etc.

  107. bobsully says: 9

  108. mckinney95 says: 8

since we are on the subject of phrases. i want to know where did the phrase “eat your heart out” come from? did it have anything to do with st valentines day or is it more sinister and macabre than that? i would really appreciate your welcomed knowledge my dear teacher.

  109. charliek says: 7

    HI MARINA:

My Marina says “Priviet.” Many years ago, before I met my wife, I was dating a woman from Britain who would tell me that I was “the bees knees.” What the hell does this mean?

  110. dvdpage says: 6

I like the idiom “the whole nine yards”
    +5 Thanks again.

  111. Богдан says: 5

    Hi Marina
    Idioms are fascinating and fun.
Americans say “dressed to the nines” or “dressed to kill”.
What are comparable expressions in Russian?
It would be great if you did a lesson like, “When English speakers say Drunk as a Skunk, a Russian might say (the literal translation).”
Idiomatic language is regional in the USA. When I have travelled to different parts of the country, I have heard expressions that made no sense to me except for the context, and even then I wasn’t exactly sure what the speaker was expressing, but I was embarrassed to ask.

Have you ever heard someone say, “You are the cat’s meow!”

    • “You are the cat’s meow” means the same thing as “You are the cat’s whiskers.”

This cat and mouse game may have you behaving like a scaredy fat cat on a hot tin roof fighting with some dogs. I’ll have the last laugh and be grinning like a Cheshire cat, because the cat got your tongue? I don’t mean to pry, since we know curiosity killed the cat. That cat doesn’t have a cat’s chance in hell to survive. Cat’s have nine lives, though, so maybe he’ll be looking like the cat who got the cream after all. I don’t want to let the cat out of the bag now, but it’s raining cats and dogs. If I don’t get inside I’m going to look like something the cat dragged in. Don’t be a scaredy cat. After all you are like a cat among the pigeons. There may be more than one way to skin a cat, but that doesn’t help because there isn’t room in here to swing a cat! So let’s just wait and see which way the cat jumps up.

Anyway, as they say, when the cat’s away, the mice will play (no offense to Marina’s mouse Arnold, who is playing whether the cat is here or not).

How about the origins of the Name Bugs Bunny, I have heard some references, of my good Bunny friend, to being flush with cash, or as we all know from gangster flicks “crazy” or bugsy. What I want to knoe is where the “1st adult cartoon” Charactor got his name?
Thanks and keep spreading the word
      BV

      • Bugs got his name because the guys who created him were said to be crazy or bugsy. or it could be becuase the name of the building he was created in was called “Termite Terrace”. Termites=bugs. thats what i always heard
