The first pasteurization test was completed by Louis Pasteur and Claude Bernard on April 20, 1862. The process was originally conceived as a way of preventing wine and beer from souring.

I believe this was the reason that in 1971, among a group of about a dozen pot-smoking wiseacres who called themselves the Waldos, who are now pushing 50. The term was shorthand for the time of day the group would meet, at the campus statue of Louis Pasteur, to smoke pot.

4:20 was a time to commemorate Louis Pasteur and the discovery of pasteurization.

  2. animalntaz says: 180

No. 2 is the obvious answer. I don’t think I’ve heard, or just barely forgotten little about the date 420. I was beginning to think it was the year 420 until I read the comments below. My history is way off, and I was trying to think of any significant figures around that era. The only 2 that popped to mind was Emperor Nero and the Prophet Mohummad, but both are way wrong.

  3. ricksiow says: 179

    I choose number 2.

According to Steven Hager, editor of High Times, the term 420 originated at San Rafael High School, in 1971, among a group of about a dozen pot-smoking wiseacres who called themselves the Waldos, who are now reaching their 50s. The term was shorthand for the time of day the group would meet, at the campus statue of Louis Pasteur, to smoke pot. Intent on developing their own discreet language, they made 420 code for a time to get high, and its use spread among members of an entire generation.

P.s. according to Denise Witmer from About.com, April 20th is Hitler’s birthday. Yes, it is his birthday. But, as 420 started out as a time, not a date, his birthday had nothing to do with it.

I’ve never really spent much time in California, except for when me, my brother (Tim) and his buddy (Ben) drove through the northeastern tip down 139 along the divider between Klamath and Modoc National Forests [I'll never forget the awesome beauty of the scenery in that majestic countryside] in an ‘84 Chevy RV (brought back to life by some long-time guests at Tim’s other pal Dan’s hostel in Eugene, Oregon) on our way to Burning Man. Which was held on “the Playa”, an ancient dried up lake bed in the northern Nevada desert somewhere near Sparks, Neveda (if I remember correctly) back in 2004. So I’d have to guess 1 :?:
Also 4/20/1889 is the birthdate of Germany’s darkest, most infamous leader of all time: der Fuhrer of the Third Reich, Adolf Schicklgruber (at birth) in Austria. Of course, most people know him by his chosen alias, Adolf Hitler!

  5. decapithon says: 175

i heard it was hitler who was born on 4 20
i dont know about the police codes in the us but here in canada they put a 10 in front of the codes
so my guess would be 3

Some Sections of the Indian Penal Code [IPC] have become popular culture references, such as Section 420 of the IPC. Confidence tricksters in India and Pakistan, where the penal code apply are called 420, after this section.

There was a popular box office hit Hindi movie by the name ‘Shri 420′. [Shri is Mr in Hindi and all other Indian languages].

    Known 420 Myths

Police dispatch code for smoking pot is 420.

The number 420 is not police radio code for anything, anywhere. Checks of criminal codes suggest that the origin is neither Californian nor federal. For instance, California Penal Code 420 defines as a misdemeanor the hindrance of use of public lands.

There are approximately 420 active chemicals in marijuana.
Actually, there are approximately 315 active chemicals in marijuana. This number goes up and down depending on which plant is used.

April 20th is National Pot Smokers Day.
Well, it is now :) ; but that wasn’t the origin.

    April 20th is Hitler’s birthday.
Yes, it is his birthday. But, as 420 started out as a time, not a date, his birthday had nothing to do with it.

The date of the Columbine school shootings.
This happened after the term was already in use.
4:20 is tea time for pot-smokers in Holland.

Tea time in Holland is at 5:30 pm, or is it 2:30 pm? Seems no one is quite sure when the wonderful people of Holland drink their tea.

  10. Hi Marina – Greetinmgs from a fellow podcaster! Love to hear the definition of the word “geek” or “nerd” please, for the listeners of our tech podcast

  11. Marina I would like to request the word Hacker

  12. Hi Marina -

Word origins that might be interesting – let me request the words “atheist” and “agnostic.”

Also, there are a couple of really cool word-related sites out there I’m not sure if you know about. Sort of just novelties like this Modern English to Old English translator: http://wandership.ca/projects/eow/ and an Old English Dictionary: http://home.comcast.net/~modean52/oeme_dictionaries.htm

It’s amazing how language has changed – the oldest known English literary work is Beowulf – and if you check it out in its original Old English it is no closer to English than most other languages with no connection to English. http://faculty.virginia.edu/OldEnglish/Beowulf.Readings/Prologue.html

Anyway, just some ruminations from your loyal student, Prospero.

  13. Living in northern ca and having a sister who worked for the Grateful Dead, in san rafael, ca I know the answer is 2. San Rafael High School students got out of school and went 420

Word Request – kinda… Riddle Request – can you investigate this popular riddle named “The World’s Hardest Riddle”? I know you can do it.

    “I turn polar bears white
And I will make you cry.
I make guys have to pee
    And girls comb their hair.
    I make celebrities look stupid
And normal people look like celebrities.
    I turn pancakes brown
    And make your champane bubble.
If you sqeeze me, I’ll pop.
If you look at me, you’ll pop.
    Can you guess the riddle?”

97% of Harvard graduates can not figure this riddle out,
But 84% of kindergarten students were able to figure this out,
    In 6 minutes or less.

  33. Hi,

I would like to know where vulgarity originates. Not just the word vulgarity (or the F word as most have learned about that one) but rather where all profanity and vulgarity originates such as, with all due respect, words such as, shit, dammit, piss, cunt, etc… I have always wondered and am really interested in profanity’s origin. I like your shows and even if you where conservatively dressed, I would take a strong interest in your topics. Thank you very much.

  44. Hola desde Espana!
    Hi Marina,,,
Can you tell me,, the origion and difference of the words
    Pirate and Buccaneer?

We enjoy your show and we watch often. Thank you for the work.
    Saludos

    • costahombre,

As a rule, the buccaneers called themselves privateers, and many sailed under the protection of a letter of marque granted by British or French authorities. Pirates for short. I’ll let Marnia investigate the origins of words if she chooses to.

I wanted to add a short true story about a former privateer:
Captain John Kendrick who commandeered the Tall ship Lady Washington from Robert Gray. In 1790 she became the first American ship to go to Japan on a trading mission, Kendrick pretended to be seeking refuge from a storm in order to land. A year later on Queen Charlotte Island, some natives stole items off the ship and Kendrick took their chiefs captive until they were returned. The natives were enraged by this and later when the Captain was drunk they came aboard and attacked, not a smart move when dealing with a drunk former privateer. He opened fire and killed fifty of them. He had some excuse, as natives earlier had attacked a shore party and killed his son.
That same year he set off for Hawaii, and then again in 1794. By that time the Lady Washington had become so famous that several British vessels in Honolulu Harbor decided upon a gun salute only they forgot they had loaded it with grapeshot which whammed into the Lady killing Captain Kendrick and several officers.

As a lifetime crew member of the Tall Ship Lady Washington, when it comes to government bureaucracy, all I have to say is “Kendrick was right!”

Many crimes occur in the late afternoon, around 4:20pm. This is ’cause it is after reform school lets out, and lolifes go out on the street, get high or start burglarizing or jacking to get money to get high. There are other unsafe times of the day, such as for violent crime…one fairly safe time however is 4:20am, ’cause everyone has already gone to the emergency room by then or has crashed on their friend’s floor or front yard. It is also a time when I post to the internet, looking for a moment of free time for myself–work too hard!

      • ha ha…touche!… i voted for California proposition 19…the first initiative to legalize MJ before you were born…it failed of course but that did not really matter…people will use any drug they want anyway…and yes, mj is one of the better ones out there in the sense it pacifies only, and unlike crack, it does not lead to gang violence…or am I wrong on this?….MJ does make people lazy and appear “peaceful” as you say…however, it also can damage the developing brain, we know now, so it is really not good for kids or teens, or anyone for that matter, only its not as bad as crack or distilled poisons….You don’t need to be lazy to be genuinely peaceful and loving…i would never use it or any mind-f drug again…also: i am not mean…if you want to understand meanness on the net, just look at the prevalence of name calling here….it is never a good thing to call yourself or other people names, no matter how mild…such as “ass.” I will never call you a name or be mean to you reneelpulpo…

markus74, French Fries began as a food that the U.S. soldiers discovered in, can you guess? France. Small-ish strips of potato deep fried. They brought the recipe home, calling them French Fried Potatos, which got shortened to French Fries.

Sorry if I stole some thunder, Marina.

  94. This is a bit more complicated than a simple word request. It’s something that’s been bothering me for a while, and I hope you’ll be able to explain it.

As you probably know, in times gone by there used to be a rather unpleasant punishment called hanging, drawing, and quartering. In modern English, a person upon whom this punishment has been inflicted is said to have been “hung, drawn, and quartered.” This does not make sense, because, since the hanging involves a person rather than, say, some laundry, it should be “hanged, drawn, and quartered”, and indeed this form does appear, but not as frequently. It is true that “hanged” is falling into disuse in ordinary conversation, but it’s still going strong in similar phrases, such as “I’ll be hung.”

    Any ideas?

Mr.Myron Beardstroker our resident philosophical theorist Here at Hot4 Youniversity has gotten into a bit of a pickle and needs your help. It seems he has come up with a new theory and doesn’t seem to be able too come up with a apporiate name. He was hoping that perhaps with your knowledge and talents with etomolgy and philology that perhaps You could. He said he’s been by the faculty offices here at Hot4 Youniversity several times and your always gone on a speaking engagement, somewhere. So he asked me to drop you a note here on the Hotforwords comments board, knowing this is where You give a lot of your lectures and classes he though maybe this would catch your eyes and you could help him out. He says he doesn’t want any credit for the name/word and all the accolades will be yours now and forevermore. Anyway I’ve attached a portion of his theory below which he said sould be sufficent for your needs, and believe me you wouldn’t want to read the whole thing because it gets quite stuffy and monotonous about a quarter of the way through the gosh darn piece Of stuff.

Freewilled women in a society and culture wherein they are allowed to choose the chararteristics, behaviors, attitudes, and habits of potential mates for production of offspring having untold thousand of years to produce said offspring both male and female which exhibit

Well anyway, Marina it goes on and on from there and He said this aught to be enough to fashion something from. He’s also requested that perhaps you might make a video of what you come up with explaing the etomolgy of your creation and post it on your website.

    • Bob says: 77.1

Sorry to disillusion you, but as proven by the song “EVERYTHING STOPS FOR TEA”
(Featured in Buchanan’s 1935 comedy film, “Come Out Of The Pantry”
      (Goodhart / Hoffman / Sigler)
      Jack Buchanan)

Every nation in creation has its favourite drink
France is famous for its wine, it’s beer in Germany
Turkey has its coffee and they serve it blacker than ink
Russians go for vodka and England loves its tea

Oh, the factories may be roaring
      With a boom-a-lacka, zoom-a-lacka, wee
But there isn’t any roar when the clock strikes four
      Everything stops for tea

Oh, a lawyer in the courtroom
In the middle of an alimony plea
Has to stop and help ‘em pour when the clock strikes four
      Everything stops for tea

It’s a very good English custom
Though the weather be cold or hot
When you need a little pick-up, you’ll find a little tea cup
      Will always hit the spot

There’s more but my point is that the last line of verse four holds the key; it says, “Will always hit the spot” and not “Will always hit the pot” so it’s “tea for two” at four and not four for two … Oh! hell! I need a cuppa

    Known Myths

    * Police dispatch code for smoking pot is 420.
The number 420 is not police radio code for anything, anywhere. Checks of criminal codes suggest that the origin is neither Californian nor federal. For instance, California Penal Code 420 defines as a misdemeanor the hindrance of use of public lands.

    * There are approximately 420 active chemicals in marijuana. Actually, there are approximately 315 active chemicals in marijuana. This number goes up and down depending on which plant is used.

    * April 20th is National Pot Smokers Day. Well, it is now; but that wasn’t the origin.

    * April 20th is Hitler’s birthday.
Yes, it is his birthday. But, as 420 started out as a time, not a date, his birthday had nothing to do with it.

    * April 20th is the date of the Columbine school shootings.
This happened after the term was already in use.

    * 4:20 is tea time for pot-smokers in Holland.
Tea time in Holland is at 5:30 pm, or is it 2:30 pm? Seems no one is quite sure when the wonderful people of Holland drink their tea.
    —————————-
    The Origin Revealed

According to Steven Hager, editor of High Times, the term 420 originated at San Rafael High School, in 1971, among a group of about a dozen pot-smoking wiseacres who called themselves the Waldos, who are now pushing 50. The term was shorthand for the time of day the group would meet, at the campus statue of Louis Pasteur, to smoke pot. Intent on developing their own discreet language, they made 420 code for a time to get high, and its use spread among members of an entire generation.

  123. The youth culture in Marin and Sonoma Counties in California use this code number quite a bit.

It can be found spraypainted onto bridge abutments and embroidered, carved, or inked onto park benches, picnic tables, high school kids’ jackets, jeans, skateboards, bike frames, book bags, backpacks, handrails, cafeteria tables, bus seats, etc.

It’s well known locally there as a not-so-secret invitation to spark up a blunt.

I once went for a hike along the Bolinas Ridge (a part of Mt. Tamalpais State Park) overlooking the ocean there. It was about 10 years ago and happened to be the afternoon of April 20th.

It seemed that around every corner in the trail, there was yet another group of kids hanging out, horsing around, and generally being loud and having fun. I wondered why there were so many teenagers there that day, although I guess they really didn’t need much excuse to be out enjoying the weather on a gorgeous warm sunny day after several weeks of heavy rains. Still, it struck me as odd. Was there some organized event going on? I wondered.

At 4:20 pm the sounds of lighters sparking, many people coughing loudly and an equal number of people exclaiming “420! Whoo-hooo!” commmenced. Sounds of partying emanated from every wrinkle in the mountainside and practically every group of trees. This lasted for some time. The aroma of the sticky-icky sensemilla (aka deep chronic) made it obvious what was going on.

So I’m going with the meeting time answer, #2.

It struck me as a pretty well-entrenched tradition on that particular day at that particular location. And not a ranger in sight…. I was reminded of the Grateful Dead shows at Winterland Auditorium in SF back in the days when security was provided by Hell’s Angels instead of police officers. Of course, I never inhaled….

Leading up to Mark 4:20 in the bible… 18&19, it asks people not to worry about everything they have to do and all the things they want to get. The stress strangles them and nothing comes of it.

In verse 20 it says “the seed planted in the good earth, represents those who hear the Word (love all creation), embrace it, and (it will) produce a harvest beyond their wildest dreams.”

This has “sparked” the connection to “420″.

Thus, on April 20th… “kick your feet up onto your desk… “spark-up” a doobie, chonger, or northshore spliff! and enjoy some blissful dreams and maybe some nonsensical? laughter.. Tomorrow is not here yet… and who knows what it will bring?”

I’m a little upset right now as I couldn’t get the video to run today, but watched it yesterday. You looked so stunning that I didn’t retain all the questions, but thought about how your mind works & remembered, there were four possibilities. Did some math in my sleep, eliminated #3 to get back to three possibilities & since #’s 1&2 are what I’ve heard before & by the time you got to #4 my mind was numbed so I can’t eliminate it by math calculations. The reason I eliminated #3, is that the last multiple choice, you were just messin’ with our heads but you wouldn’t do it twice in a row (You don’t come across as cruel) at least not on purpose. So My guess, I mean answer is #’s 1,2 & 3’s replacement, 4. Could be, my math calculations are off by a miniscule amount. If I am wrong , and the answer to that scares me, I will have to rethink my calculations on whether the asteroid hurtling toward our little planet will make it here before the vapour of what is my life disipates.
I found my hockey helmut so if my math is wrong. I’m good. A nervous Cheers!

More weird facts about the number 420….

    420 is the sum of four consecutive primes (101 + 103 + 107 + 109).

    420 is a “pronic” number (also called an oblong number or heteromecic number) which is a number which is the product of two consecutive integers, that is, n (n + 1). The first few pronic numbers are: 0, 2, 6, 12, 20, 30, 42, 56, 72, 90, 110, 132, 156, 182, 210, 240, 272, 306, 342, 380, 420, 462 …

It is also the smallest number divisible by the numbers 1 through 7.

420 is also a “harshad number” (aka a Niven number) which is an integer that is divisible by the sum of its digits in a given number base. Harshad means “great joy” (and one may speculate if the fact that 420 is a “great joy” number stems from the marijuana use associated with it….but I digress…).

420 is also a polygonal number (or, figurative number), which is a number that can be arranged as a regular polygon. 420 is called an “141-gonal number.”

Famous people, in addition to Hitler, born on 4/20 include: Marcus Aurelius Antonius (philosopher/emperor), Jessica Lange (actress), Robert Wagner (actor), Ryan O’Neill (actor), Don “Donny Baseball” Mattingly (Yankees), Carmen Electra (hottie, but not as hot as Marina  ).

On April 20, Apollo 16 landed on the Moon, the electron microscope was first demonstrated, and Marie Curie discovered Radium, Louis Pasteur successfully pasteurized something, the submarine was first patented, and Hot Springs Natural Park in Arkansas was founded.

April 20 is the date of the Columbine shooting in Colorado, and the Johnson Space Center Shooting in Texas in 2007.

Muhammed is said to have been born on April 20, 570.

Could it be…..? This number 420 is much like the number 23????? It’s all connected to 420????

Favorite Jimmy song “One Particular Harbour” I can smell the ocean breezes & feel the warmth. Damn, just noticed, it;s snowing outside & I.ve taken the snow tyres off mine & my wife’s cars. Better put another Jimmy album on. 420 dude.

    • prospero811, branch off into other number bases.

If one really wanted to get wierd with number theory, for any oddity found apply it to numbers in base two, or base eight, or base sixteen. In fact, do all the bases and see what if anything is then found to be “odd.”

If all the bases are put through the wringer with any single oddity one cares to focus upon, can one word be found to describe this collection of information that has been formulated?

I’ve yet to find much talk here on this aspect of number theory. People like to focus on base ten stuff only.

Looks like I should plan another Barby’ soon. There is ice on my pool now, so I’ll wait till it warms up & we’ll invite more folks & see if we can get “Labatt78″ to bring some fine Canadian beer, maybe have to wait till the playoffs are done in hockey as I haven’t seen him in awhile. There’s a whole bunch of folks I’d like to meet that pop in here & maybe the skipper could take us on a three hour cruise… Nice dreams. Thanks for the music but work becons on a saturday yet. Back to it monday too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0—Q97pG4&NR=1
      Those cheesburgers looked delicious

    • Could it be…..? This number 420 is much like the number 23????? It’s all connected to 420????
Naw! No more than 42 being the Answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything has a numeric solution in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

In the story, a “simple answer” to The Ultimate Question is requested from the computer Deep Thought—specially built for this purpose. It takes Deep Thought 7½ million years to compute and check the answer which turns out to be 42. C&P From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Unfortunately NONE of the given answers is correct, let aside provable.

I dug a bit deeper, contacted a few dope-dealing authorities, and have finally discovered  that the true origin comes from the international telephone prefix of Czech Republic. In that country, canabis or how they call it “trahvah” is apparently so popular that you can basicaly order dope at any telephone number with 420 prefix. If you need a proof just try it.

Here you go, another mystery solved by a bit of thinking.

    • Awe you cheated  We are suppose to just guess. Any of us can google the answer. Do you have the dates of the origin of the use of 420 2demanding?

      • Of course I do:
In late 60’s ganja became so popular in Czechoslovakia, that the soviet red army had to be called in summer 1968 to establish at least some kind of an order and to stop people from just smoking pot all the time. To commemorate this pitifull intervention wich cut the whole Europe from dope supplies for decades, hemp loving crowd all over the world started to reffer to stuff related to canabis by 420, the telephone prefix that shall no more bless them with endless supplies of weed.

  149. prospero811 says: 26

A 420 is a type of single hull two-person boat with two sails.

I wonder if it got that name because it was invented by Hitler or people smoked a lot of pot on it? Hmmmmmmm……

    • LOL its also a sailing club called The C420 Association.

Also I know Hitler didn’t smoke at 4:20pm because in the UK they use the 24 hour format. So the time would have been 16:20 hours.

Interesting fact regarding the penal code answer:

It’s not the California penal code section for marijuana use, or the number of compounds in marijuana (that would be 315). However, it is a slang term from the Indian penal code for a person who robs people by trick (a con artist is called a “420″ – in Pakistan and India).

  151. prospero811 says: 24

O.k. – Adolf Hitler was born on 4/20/1889, and he’s the guy who some people thought was the origin of one of the modern usages of the term 420.

4:20 started out as the time in the afternoon when it was appropriate to light up a joint after school. Well, appropriate from the point of view of the smokers, not the school authorities or the police…..

#2 is close to what I heard many years ago with the exception that it was people meeting after work to get a buzz,I suppose the kids grew up and carried on with the tradition  .

    I actually saw 420 referred to on a website before I ever heard the expression,is it ok to post a link? Here it is;

Marina, I also have a word request: what is the origin of the word melancholy?

It’s bound to be interesting :)

  159. captainjack says: 16

Wow 4 guesses. hummm… All the answers sound believable and logical. I have two clues.

First off, the way words get all bastardized in the English language that there should be a strange origin with some kind of twist. So with that thought, I think that all answers have to be wrong.

What is my other clue? You said many other scientist’s where baffled for years. So that tell me that no one has found the true origin of 420. Ok I the little gray squirrel is going out on a limb on this one. So my guess is none of the above.

Now for my little trip to the internet to fine some info on Hemp. ( Didn’t cheat Marina ) We may never know the origin of 420 because Hemp has been used since the stone age. Hemp cords were twisted together and imprinted on the sides of pottery dating back 12,000 years give or take. Back in 1842 powerful concentrated extract of marijuana was the second most prescribed drug in the U.S. In 1942 Japan cut of our imported hemp supply. The US product a film called “Hemp for Victory” back in 1942. hummm 1842 and 1942… Naw that can’t be a clue!

It was the wife of the cave man that asked her lazy husband ( in stone age language ) to get her some hemp so she could decorate the new pottery she was making. He asked her how many pieces of hemp she needed. She said 420 plants should be fine.

P.S. I teach in my USCG classes about the use of hemp, Manila, and other ropes. Interesting thing about this is there are a few USCG questions on the exams regarding the breaking strength of ropes. I can’t say which ones as they are referenced on the exams.

Sorry Marina I didn’t do the Digg thing. For it holds no value to your success with this site. 22+ years in marketing I know a thing or two. I don’t think you need it. The thing you need to do to make viewer flock to your videos is to

    Hello Teacher!!
    1) Love the show!!
    2) Just wondering, what’s the origin of the word “Testify”??
    3) Since it’s summer, can we have our classes outside, like in the park, or at the beach??

  163. Just finishes DIGG-ing this site, but forgot to digg this lesson
I think the answer to 420 is the police code they use when you get busted smoking or are in posession of weed, so #1 is my answer.
Extra Credit- Hitler was born on April 20th  :?:

  164. jirikus says: 11

    Dear Marina,
    I bet on #2.

  165. Dear teacher,
I watched your video and did my homeworks.
It seems that in 1971 students from San Rafael California met after school (at 4:20 pm) to smoke cannabis (what a shame! It is illegal!) at the Bradner Elementary statue. The term 420 became part of the group’s salute: “420 man!”
About the famous people born or dead this day there’s a lot to say:
for example the prophet muhammad is said to be born a 4/20 (this is controversial). Napoleon III is born the 4/200 of 1808. Adolf Hitler also but in 1889.
The general Lee resigns his commission in the US Army in order to command the forces of the state of Virginia.
Here it is! I hope you’ll be satisfied by my work.
    Thank you for the lesson.
    Amicalement,
    Don Felipe

    • Dear teacher,
I must apologize, I won’t be able to be in class for the coming week. Unfortunately, the holidays are finished in my country and I must now take care of my own students. I’ll send you a justification for my absence. With all my excuses.

    Dear Marina,

    Two questions for you:

    1. Do you have any anxiety or nervousness about getting famous? It does not appear that you do, but just wondering what you think about that as your audience grows. I would not like the loss of privacy.

    2. Do you have the ability to answer the meanings to words on the spot, or do you have to research ahead of time?

My answer on the 420….is the one about the school kids.

Good luck and hope you will always prosper
