Some Sections of the Indian Penal Code [IPC] have become popular culture references, such as Section 420 of the IPC. Confidence tricksters in India and Pakistan, where the penal code apply are called 420, after this section.

There was a popular box office hit Hindi movie by the name ‘Shri 420′. [Shri is Mr in Hindi and all other Indian languages].

    Known 420 Myths

Police dispatch code for smoking pot is 420.

The number 420 is not police radio code for anything, anywhere. Checks of criminal codes suggest that the origin is neither Californian nor federal. For instance, California Penal Code 420 defines as a misdemeanor the hindrance of use of public lands.

There are approximately 420 active chemicals in marijuana.
Actually, there are approximately 315 active chemicals in marijuana. This number goes up and down depending on which plant is used.

April 20th is National Pot Smokers Day.
Well, it is now :) ; but that wasn’t the origin.

    April 20th is Hitler’s birthday.
Yes, it is his birthday. But, as 420 started out as a time, not a date, his birthday had nothing to do with it.

The date of the Columbine school shootings.
This happened after the term was already in use.
4:20 is tea time for pot-smokers in Holland.

Tea time in Holland is at 5:30 pm, or is it 2:30 pm? Seems no one is quite sure when the wonderful people of Holland drink their tea.

    Hi Marina -

Word origins that might be interesting - let me request the words “atheist” and “agnostic.”

Also, there are a couple of really cool word-related sites out there I’m not sure if you know about. Sort of just novelties like this Modern English to Old English translator: http://wandership.ca/projects/eow/ and an Old English Dictionary: http://home.comcast.net/~modean52/oeme_dictionarie s.htm

It’s amazing how language has changed - the oldest known English literary work is Beowulf - and if you check it out in its original Old English it is no closer to English than most other languages with no connection to English. http://faculty.virginia.edu/OldEnglish/Beowulf.Rea dings/Prologue.html

Anyway, just some ruminations from your loyal student, Prospero.

Word Request - kinda… Riddle Request - can you investigate this popular riddle named “The World’s Hardest Riddle”? I know you can do it.

    “I turn polar bears white
And I will make you cry.
I make guys have to pee
    And girls comb their hair.
    I make celebrities look stupid
And normal people look like celebrities.
    I turn pancakes brown
    And make your champane bubble.
If you sqeeze me, I’ll pop.
If you look at me, you’ll pop.
    Can you guess the riddle?”

97% of Harvard graduates can not figure this riddle out,
But 84% of kindergarten students were able to figure this out,
    In 6 minutes or less.

True, lazyness apparenty, makes nonscence and dullness, but, can be, kinda funny, if permitted!!!! Weird in other dimentions. Unusual but household! But nothing, would be as cool as we know it, Jim, without the daydreaming slaksydazial dope heads. So heres to dope and all those who lose their sweet little minds, dreaming, when the wind crys Mary….just a play for today with short tem effect, But, dope really does screw you up… no it does, so all things concidered, all in moderation…. You know you gotta get a life! Dancing the Kaos

420 BC- Wow, so many articles about that time, fasinating reading…What a year!!!!.Love to know which one relates….scratching another bald patch, try to figure this one out….guessing its something to do with a Greek dude who got thrown out, ostrascized……further reading pending……. yummy…….

    Hi,

I would like to know where vulgarity originates. Not just the word vulgarity (or the F word as most have learned about that one) but rather where all profanity and vulgarity originates such as, with all due respect, words such as, shit, dammit, piss, cunt, etc… I have always wondered and am really interested in profanity’s origin. I like your shows and even if you where conservatively dressed, I would take a strong interest in your topics. Thank you very much.

    Pirate and Buccaneer?

captainjack replied on April 21st, 2008 1:00 am:

    costahombre,

As a rule, the buccaneers called themselves privateers, and many sailed under the protection of a letter of marque granted by British or French authorities. Pirates for short. I’ll let Marnia investigate the origins of words if she chooses to.

I wanted to add a short true story about a former privateer:
Captain John Kendrick who commandeered the Tall ship Lady Washington from Robert Gray. In 1790 she became the first American ship to go to Japan on a trading mission, Kendrick pretended to be seeking refuge from a storm in order to land. A year later on Queen Charlotte Island, some natives stole items off the ship and Kendrick took their chiefs captive until they were returned. The natives were enraged by this and later when the Captain was drunk they came aboard and attacked, not a smart move when dealing with a drunk former privateer. He opened fire and killed fifty of them. He had some excuse, as natives earlier had attacked a shore party and killed his son.
That same year he set off for Hawaii, and then again in 1794. By that time the Lady Washington had become so famous that several British vessels in Honolulu Harbor decided upon a gun salute only they forgot they had loaded it with grapeshot which whammed into the Lady killing Captain Kendrick and several officers.

As a lifetime crew member of the Tall Ship Lady Washington, when it comes to government bureaucracy, all I have to say is “Kendrick was right!”

    Hi Marina:
I don’t know much about marajuana, but it might be interesting to know where “cat’s out of the bag” came from as-well-as what, exactly, it means.

captainjack replied on April 20th, 2008 4:42 am:

nvslurker, I actually had the cat of 9 tails (a full 9 knotted lashes, 3 knots each I might add) drawn out of the bag on me several times. I never had the cat scratch my back. A sail call would always interrupt the punishment. Thank gawd I didn’t get to meet the three sisters! But I don’t want the cat to get out of the bag just yet unless Marina doesn’t want to do a video on this. I really don’t want to steal her wind I just might have the devil to pay. I have in my mind a great two person skit that could demonstrate all of this.

Well I better get to bed now. I have the first dog watch.

Hello, Hotforwords, a word i would like to request would be “dream”.
Spanish, Sleep is dormir and think is pensar, spanish coming from latin i would figure its origin would be near enough to help me find it. I also tried pseudo for false but that could only link me to thought ( in a sense to me thought would have no ground in reality).
I would appreciate your help to ease my mind and for inspiration, keep on educating because you’re doing a excellent.

Many crimes occur in the late afternoon, around 4:20pm. This is ’cause it is after reform school lets out, and lolifes go out on the street, get high or start burglarizing or jacking to get money to get high. There are other unsafe times of the day, such as for violent crime…one fairly safe time however is 4:20am, ’cause everyone has already gone to the emergency room by then or has crashed on their friend’s floor or front yard. It is also a time when I post to the internet, looking for a moment of free time for myself–work too hard!

Does anyone know the peek hour of the day for being killed: when one should stay home?

Numbers are nice! More open ended than words.

markus74, French Fries began as a food that the U.S. soldiers discovered in, can you guess? France. Small-ish strips of potato deep fried. They brought the recipe home, calling them French Fried Potatos, which got shortened to French Fries.

Sorry if I stole some thunder, Marina.

This is a bit more complicated than a simple word request. It’s something that’s been bothering me for a while, and I hope you’ll be able to explain it.

As you probably know, in times gone by there used to be a rather unpleasant punishment called hanging, drawing, and quartering. In modern English, a person upon whom this punishment has been inflicted is said to have been “hung, drawn, and quartered.” This does not make sense, because, since the hanging involves a person rather than, say, some laundry, it should be “hanged, drawn, and quartered”, and indeed this form does appear, but not as frequently. It is true that “hanged” is falling into disuse in ordinary conversation, but it’s still going strong in similar phrases, such as “I’ll be hung.”

    Any ideas?

Does anybody wonder or worry what the future holds for “Hot for Words” I don’t want to spoil the surprise (or matbe I do, you figure it out) but when Marina retires with all the $$$ she makes, she can put a downpayment on the good captains yacht and sail around the world, or at least the harbour, knowing she has left the multinational “Hotforwords corporation” in good hands.
