The first pasteurization test was completed by Louis Pasteur and Claude Bernard on April 20, 1862. The process was originally conceived as a way of preventing wine and beer from souring.

I believe this was the reason that in 1971, among a group of about a dozen pot-smoking wiseacres who called themselves the Waldos, who are now pushing 50. The term was shorthand for the time of day the group would meet, at the campus statue of Louis Pasteur, to smoke pot.

4:20 was a time to commemorate Louis Pasteur and the discovery of pasteurization.

No. 2 is the obvious answer. I don’t think I’ve heard, or just barely forgotten little about the date 420. I was beginning to think it was the year 420 until I read the comments below. My history is way off, and I was trying to think of any significant figures around that era. The only 2 that popped to mind was Emperor Nero and the Prophet Mohummad, but both are way wrong.
