In the TV show “24″, agent Jack Bauer and his fellow field agents often use the expression “copy that” as a reply to an order or information given to them. Obviously it’s a way to show that they actually did hear and understand what they were told.

I believe the clamping instrument to which you refer is actually spelled vise, which was pronounced “VIZE” by the old machine shop workers I knew as a kid in the steel city (now the rust belt) back in Pennsyltucky. Our metal shop teacher (the guy I learned this from) was about a thousand years old or so. He was also missing several fingers on each hand, but he could still operate the vise…
I think “vice” is a rare alternate spelling of “vise”. Could be wrong, though.

Actually, Marina already addressed “fuck” on one of her Sirius radio programs. The under consent of king and for unlawful carnal knowledge theories are wrong – myths.
However, the practice that you refer to – the king choosing to have sex with women that he wanted – may have actually existed. In Latin, the jus primae noctis referred to a “law of the manor” where a king or a lord had the right to deflower the manor’s virgins. This kind of law – the right of king to deflower or “take the maidenhead” of the virgins – goes back a long way.
One might wonder if that’s where the term “royally screwed” comes from – ha! But, to me that sounds a bit folksy and has a bit of an odor of urban legend about it.

sadly, i discovered the story about the anthropologist and his way of classifying people from that region as caucasians, but it is pretty interesting that we have ‘Asian’ for people from Asia,’African’ or ‘African-American’ ‘Native American’….. each with regard to regions (and actually true to the borders for the most part). ‘Hispanic’ or ‘Latino’ with it’s obvious references to the languages they speak.
And yet the so-called ‘Caucasians’ are not confined to a region or common language… so what is there left to call them?
