Molotov Cocktail
I discuss the origin of the phrase Molotov Cocktail…
and my frustration with trying to throw one in Grand Theft Auto IV (GTA IV)!

Вопрос не соовсем по теме: Что в данном случае имела ввид Марина за фразой “для особого кредита…”?
I am not sure if I remember right, but when I was a kid, my dead dad told me that a Molotov Cocktail was part gasoline, part oil (Motor Oil) in a wine bottle with a rag for a wick. But I am not sure if you wet the wick with gasoline or motor oil. Dad must have had some firsthand experience with guerella stuff in WWII! It is like in TIME magazine in the early 90’s they said the IRA in Ireland made dynamite out of a mixture of nitrogen fertilizer and deisel fuel. Now you can buy a copy of THE ANARCHIST COOKBOOK complained against by that LaPeer fella of the NRA. I had just dreamt that some anarchists would set fire to the Princeton Univeristy library. That was that John Nash’s favorite hangout in A BEUATIFUL MIND. My mind is more of an angry one.

Just wanted to know do you have an XBox 360 or PS3?? (>^_^)> huggies for you! love your videos!!
wow, Russian is a pretty language, it flows off your tounge like [molasses].
Marina, you should try the new game “Call Of Duty: World At War”. There’s a mini game in it called “Nazi Zombies” and one of the weapons you can use are: 4 Molotov Cocktails.
They’re even more deadly than in GTA IV. I think of all the times I tried using them, I’ve killed maybe 3 zombies. I killed myself like 10 times. If they explode too close, you instantly die (which isn’t good if the rest of the team can’t save you).
I was Curious of the Word “Won’t, which is a contraction for Will not. I wanted to know why the contraction is not Willn’t. Do not is Don’t. Does not is Doesn’t. So where did won’t come from?
ok to throw the Molotov Cocktail(or grenade) you have to hold down the aim button and then hold the fire buttin so you dont just drop them and yes i have played the game and i more or less enjoy jumping ou of choppers
I stumbled across this clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsJfXA0XbWI and it made me think of the hotforwords GTA IV lesson

Greg
As usual, you are always captivating in any language!
Thank you for making the internet a more enjoyable place!
this is his son, koty. I think you are doing a great job and i believe Grand theft auto IV is great. A major improvement of GTA 3. I would like to know the origin of the phrase “charlie horse”.
How lovely! Russian really is sexy, like John Cleese said in “A Fish Called Wanda”.
omg that was awesome, I am self teaching Russian right now and it is super hard without a teacher. You should do a “simple” Russian video, like how to say Thank you, yes, no, hi, bye… that kind of stuff.
Maybe we can play sometime
add me on xbox live.. Evil Casserole
I just love it when you speak Russian…..
Oh my God !!!!!! I LUV when you speak Russian……..it makes you even SEXIER !!!! (if that’s possible). They should make a new game……”Grand Theft Marina” Then guys like me could try to steal you away!!!!
Dear teacher,
You could go on in Russian forever, I’d love it –
- here in France my first foreign language was English, and 2nd… Russian, this lesson reminds me good old times, when I was a young boy.
who knows , if my Russian teachers had had half your charm,
maybe I’d become a Russian/French translator ?
btw, Love the blunders in Russian, even if I can catch only part of them.

Супер! На щет GTA IV – нажми и удержывай кнопку “огонь”…
В зависимости от того сколько держать… зависит как далеко упадет Коктейль Молотова…
Ok, what did you say?
He told her to hold the throw button, and it’ll make the Molotov Cocktail go farther.
The same way you throw the grenade you have to hold the button down (only for just a few seconds and then release, hold it for a long time and it blows up on you)…. I wish i had an example of how that works in everyday life, maybe i can think of “1″
Жизнь будет по-другому
ты забыла русский язык???
Well I never leaned it yet. Too busy leaning Hex decimal and Binary.
I believe you meant “hexadecimal”.
Does Marina know that some hexadecimal numbers are also words?
DADA
It was 2am when I wrote that. I was very tired.
Not sure if she knows or not. She does know a bit of coding. She is mostly focused on word origins.
Dera teacher!
I just wanted to say that I learn new thing every day from you! I knew the answer to the cocktail, but I never thought the russian language could sound so smoth and sensual!
from your dear student / Swedehunter
Dear Marina
Yesterday a saw your russian explanation about Molotov Cocktail with legend in english. Well, I’m brazilian and love this site but my english is not good to understand all that you say. Then, I would like know if it’s possible to insert english legend on all diary hotforwords. So people around the world could follow, well, hotforwords explanations and improve english. You would become the most sensual, sexy and intelligent teacher of the world.

Молодец! Я вижу что многие, спасибо тебе, хотят выучить Русский язык. Я начила серию на Ю-тюбе под назбанием “Russian Lessons”.
Тебя прошу, пожалуйста, помоги мне.
Покажи линк на моё видео в твоём описание. Это мне так поможет, даже не предстовлаешь. Мой канал на YouTube называется RussianVlog.
Hummm Might be good for a few of us to learn a few phrases. I watched the first lesson. A bit to fast for me. But I guess she was making it more like an introduction to the language. Tagalog, Spanish, German, & Greek are a few languages I have played around with. Greek looks somewhat similar in text as Russian. Do they have the same roots or is just a quincidence?
sure !
I was told by my teacher in my 1st year learning Russian at French school, that the Cyrillic (Russian) alphabet settled in the 9th century after the work of two Orthodox monks – hmm maybe they were Saints as well –
So they borrowed from Greek alphabet they used for liturgy many letters to represent phones of the slavic languages they spoke.
- You’ll find a deeper explanation in Wikipedia’s “Cyrillic” article -
Dear fellow student
If I may, the two orthodox monks were called Cyrillus and methodus if I remember.
Just wanted to help.

I request the word Pigeon. In Grand Theft Auto 4, you can collect 200 pigeons and was wondering, why they are named that. And why they are so frequent around New York City. Thanks.
Marina, I would like to know the origin of the word Erebus. I have no desire to know about the mountain but i do know what erebus means. and i guess its from greek mythology but i want to know where THEY thought of it. definition is this:Classical Mythology. The darkness under the earth, imagined either as the abode of sinners after death or of all the dead.
Dear teacher,
Goddam it! a little bit of time to write something to my teacher!
Very interesting to see the real person. A big gift to us all. Thank you!
But a little bit difficult to analyse the sound of russian!
Bon, puisque c’est comme ça, nous aussi, les élèves qui ne pittons rien au russe, on peut parler dans une langue étrangère !!!!! Et alors là ? Quid understand lo que Ich dis? Because das est facile no mais!!!!!
Well, to answer your question, I don’t play GTAIV. I prefer roleplaying games.
Thank you for this interesting lesson.
Your devoted student

Hmm, that spaghetti looks so tasty, it made me wonder, what is the origin of the word spaghetti (I guess it comes from Italian), but what really is it’s origin.
Please share your spaghetti recipe with the class…
Marina, Did you lose some comments again?
you’re the best,Scotthorn
I would like to request the word computer hacker
Thats two words. You only get one word or one phrase.
Yours truly started hacking and pirating back in 1979. I wrote my first virus before I knew they where called viruses. I called it a prank program but it was an early form of computer virus. It was called A dot F. written in BASIC or Applesoft (A Microsoft language – yes Bill Gates was writing for Apple back then, where do you think he got the idea of Windows?)
Both Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs where early computer hackers. The even built blue boxes. Some of the early Macintosh/Apple programs like VisiCal (one of the first spreadsheet programs) where hacks.
I was able to duck out of Operation Sundevil
I think its because I kept myself as a low level hacker. I didn’t boast my hacks.
I think there are two distinct classifications of hackers. White Hat (good) and Black Hat (bad) hackers. Yea and even Gray Hats, but I’m not going there.
Oh the Secret Service is knocking on my door. I have to run bye…
OH captainjack, were you behind the scene in picking “hacker” for latest word game? You sure know your computers!
peace
Nope. she did not consult me on that word. She never consults me on any word for many times she has more in depth information than I do. I leave it all up to her.
Please define and relate the history of the word “Latin”. I’m latino, but I also understand that there are Latin Europeans, and of course, other variations, such as Latin Americans, and so on. As a word, it has very much Euro-centric connotation in meaning, just as much as Hispanic. Can you convey its meaning and importance in totality to people who seem to have little to no knowledge of its true meaning.
ANYBODY PLAY “GUITAR HERO” OR “ROCK BAND” FOR PS3
Marina, when I first subscribed to your videos about a month ago I have gone back to the first one and watched every video you have made. You can see the changes in your style that keep getting better. Keep up the good work.
GTA4 is the best ever game l’ve ever played! Your So Gorgeous Marina!

Marina,
When I was out in the woods I saw something very interesting. A cow, calf, and bull moose were walking in a field below where I was standing and they were all grazing. The bull was very interested in the cow and he walked right up behind her and tried to mount up. The cow turned her head toward the bull and said as clearly as could be “Noooooooo”. I laughed so hard I could not continue standing. That leads me to the question, where does the word “no” come from???
I don’t know how to throw a molotov cocktail in a drink. I made one once, and we launched it…and then we went to the hospital to take care of the burns. In retrospect, I wish that I could have seen how difficult they are to handle in a CGI world before I tried it in real life.
That was a long time ago, and only the emotional scars remain.
So I have a question about the word “phonetic.” How come it isn’t spelled “phonetically.” Shouldn’t it be “funetic?”
That brings up a whole lot of questions about the English alphabet itself. Has there ever been a move to “clean it up?” Can’t we get rid of the “C”? We have an “S” and a “K” to do the work of the “C”. There are more where that came from .
I have been thinking about that and came to the conclusion that the letter “C” should be used for the sound of “CH” as in church or “curc
Can you cover the English GESTURE where the first two fingers are held straight and the others clenched with knuckles facing the recipient. (Like the reverse of Churchill’s ‘v for victory ‘
THIS IS NOT AN OBSCENE GESTURE
Most believe that this means f*** off or go forth and multiply, but if you check the symbol actually originally means YOU ARE ABOUT TO DIE FRENCHMAN and originates from a fantastic tale of Shakespear’s King Henry 5th battle of Agincourt 25th October 1415.
When a retreating English army of 900 was cornered by the French 8000 strong , the English archers (with a range of well over 1km) shot the Falconbergs and Meres at the back of the French ranks before they came into the pathetic 500m range of the French Archers at the front.
French did not take English prisoners of war they always removed these 2 drawstring fingers making them useless archers and unworthy opponents.
So the English displayed them to the French to humiliate them who consequently fled climbing over the bodies of their dead colleagues to be killed by the next shower of arrows raining down in the same spot as before.
Probably the most unexpected outcome of any massacre since Bodicea in Roman times.
I just think that this fallacy for this gesture should made more known.
I’m really late, but all this talk of gasoline explosions & hard driving etc.
Makes me realize that gasoline does flow in my viens. this is as it were right up my alley. For all the old cogers that Marina allows to come to this place http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CI40qNY7mIU
Marina, I have a question I have been thinking of asking since last night. What is the reason you bought the game?
She should get the game for free for pomotional purposes, or better yet get paid $$
Who says the game needs promoting ? Most people I know slept on the street outside the shop to be the first to buy it !
I have a theory of why she purchased the game. If someone asked me if she purchased the game I would not have believed them because of her perceived profile. It didn’t make any sense. Which is why I asked the question. I don’t want to post my theory for it might become a Schroders cat and effecting her answer.
BillyB, I can email you my theory if your interested. Just shoot me an email. I think you still have it.
That’s Erwin Schrödinger, just in case anyone was trying to look the reference up.
Thanks buzz,
I didn’t think I had his name spelled correctly and I should have looked it up.
BillyB and I had a long discussion about my theory and about car racing which was very interesting. If anyone wants my email just go to my contact page and fill out the form and I’ll email you back. I just don’t want to post my email online here for spam robots to scoop up.

Dear Marina:
From all the chatter here it is apparent that there is quite a bit of interest from your fans in learning Russian (or at the very least, watching you as you speak it. Russki seems to go well with sipping Stoli…) Perhaps you should consider opening a pay site where you could teach those of us who are Russian language impaired…
I have always liked the sound of Russian (Especially when coming from the lips of one as lovely as you.) but I haven’t got the time now to go back to school and take Russki yizzik classes. I’m sure there must be others out there like me. I’d like to learn it even if I couldn’t get college credits. Do you think it might be worthwhile researching, or would it cut into your GTA IV time too much?
It’s almost scary how quick you replied to make question about my “gravatar”…kinda makes me wonder how you stay so in shape if you stay in front of the computer that much…
I eat right jimmy24651
Can you send me a copy of your diet, Marina? I want to give it to my girlfriend.
dude?
Does the left side of Jimmy24651 taste bad ?
Don’t believe her, I hear the fridge is near empty. Your avatar pick looks good & you managed to get it quicker than i got mine. Cheers
Eat a healthy diet of locally raised organic food or better yet become a vegetarian. I can provide you with a bunch of scientific studies and shit. Guessing her BMI, physiological characteristics and attachment to animals, I’ll lay you odds that marina is a vegan.
More shit than scientific studies, I bet…
Howdy Marina!
GTA IV sounds like a great game. Wish I had a PS3 or Xbox 360 (Got a Nintendo Wii tho)
I was watching one of your lessons the other day (can’t remember which one), and I remember you mentioning the word ‘onomatopoeia’. This inspired me to ‘investigate’ the origin of this word.
*kaibanator investigates!*
I found some info from wikipedia:
Onomatopoeia. The word is a synthesis of the Greek words όνομα (onoma, = “name”) and ποιέω (poieō, = “I make” or “I do”) thus it essentially means “name creation”, although it makes more sense combining “name” and “I do”, meaning it is named (& spelled) as it sounds (e.g. quack, bang, etc.).
So thank you very much for teaching us philology and I am looking forward to watching more of your lessons
kaibanator, I’m working on a video for onomatopoeia, it’s actually a collaboration with Venetian Princess… will be coming out soon
sweet thanks for the quick reply
“Oooh Ooh I requested it” *raises hand*
And one more thing….I can’t seem to figure out how to upload a picture for myself, instead of having this boring little gray square as my icon…any help?
Go here.. it shows you how.. it’s called a gravatar… http://www.hotforwords.com/help
Yes I asked for help with that too !
Marina we all love and adore you !
Are there any languages besides English and Russian that you speak fluently/beautifully?
She looks to be smart as anything so I wouldn’t put it past her to speak other languages, and even if it was totally pronounced wrong from her it would still sound beautiful.
For some reason a lot of people I know who speak Russian as their first language tend to have English as their third (or fourth
) language.
Hope you are doing well!
The 1st answer to your question, “does anyone know how to throw a molotov cocktail in GTA IV?” No. because the game was just recently released in the usa.
The 2nd answer. I love the Grand Theft Auto franchise, since my first time with GTA III. My biggest favourite so far is GTA San Andreas. Makes me want to play right now.
p.s.
you’re such a beautiful sight to see, first thing after waking up.
Great Lesson Marina
Loved the idea with using Russian. you should do more of these lessons
just a small question, why did you said “HotForWords must investigate” rather then your usual line
Anyway, Keep up the great work
and I hope to see more video’s in the good old native language
childeofmalkav, I don’t know.. maybe to mix it up? I get caught up in the tenses of things sometimes.. in other words.. did I already investigate it? Or am I about to investigate it? Still playing around with that…
Dear Teacher,
I wish you all the best on National Teacher Day!! Thanks for enriching our lives with lasting contributions of knowledge, wisdom and beauty. I place a virtual apple upon your virtual desk. I am positive all of your students would vote for you as teacher of the year!
Thanks zymo!
Hi Marina, id like to request the the words: Placebo, nocebo and the word poignant.
do you now something from slovakia speak ? i am from slovakia
Marina and aLx – further to my log on issue…. it’s weird – I “logged on” using the button at the top right of the home page. I then clicked to the Molotov Cocktail page and the “reply” links were on. However, I clicked to the Mayday Game page, and the “reply” links were not on. I tried a couple times (same browser window as well as different browser window), and same result. I am sure that in a little while, the Mayday Game replies will be on too; at least that’s what’s happened lately.
This is just weird! I wonder if anyone else has had the same issue.
After loggin if a page doesn’t show reply I’ve been hitting the digg & then when I hitt the blue & return the replies work “dunno why?”
Ah, so I’m not the only one! Whew! I was starting to think I was crazy.
No your not crazy. Just take the blue pill and all will be fine.
I’ll take the red pill, Thanks anyways. I’ll stay in wunderland

Superduper lesson, look fantastic as ever

Hey Marina. I love your videos. I totally dig this one with all the Russian language! Two things:
1) What is the origin of the word ‘video’?
2) Suggestion: Start Videos teaching us all Russian!!
That was excellent Marina! keep up the good work. Five Stars for our dear teacher! thanx for mentioning me! Yayy!!!
Where did the word nuts originate from to make it mean crazy

As I have raced real cars & built a few up for my son to race, video games, I don’t have much time for, well to be honest I suck at video games. Just can’t get the feel for it as the smell of gasoline & burning rubber excite my sences far too much, & sitting in my living room causes my sences to numb & I sleep the sleep of a warrior at peace. That being said I ‘ve seen a little of the hype/controversy over the new version of GTA and I hear there is a PC version in the works complete with book club, sign me up

I’ve crashed a few times & hitting other cars doesn’t hurt that much. Hitting the wall does make one stop abruptly & thats when you realize that you have internal organs. The outside of your body stops before the innards do. Also can’t set the car for no damage so the work starts again when the races ends. Here is one lucky guy.

that was mmmmm so hot tht russian talks and ur blonde uuummmm russian ladies rock my world now i understand why ur GODs gift to this world lov and kisses my sweet teacher
I’M SORRY MAN, SHE’S MARRIED
sure?
DON’T YOU THINK THAT A BEAUTIFUL HOT SEXY WOMAN WITH 27 YEARS OLD ON HER SHOULDN’T BE SINGLE ???
Who is married gio? I’m not.
Gio, maybe she is looking for the perfect head in a jar. (see: “I Dated a Robot” episode in season three of . ) Its a concept that if you could not afford having your body frozen to later bring back to life in the future you could just freeze your head at a much lower cost.
The head in a jar is my concept of the perfect partner for marriage. If two can live happily together as just two heads in a jar then the marriage could be a life long success. Thus eliminating “sexual intercourse” or “Looks” playing in the part of making a decision of living that person for the rest of your life. I developed this concept many years ago long before Futurama came out. I still have some bugs too work out of the idea before I put it out to market.

Dear fellow student
Interesting theory, but we should not ask ourselves this kind of question. This is a part of the deal. It would not be as interesting if we knew. I think all of us has already had a sexy teacher as teens. You surely dreamed of a romance (or something else) but it remained a pleasant remembrance because nothing happened.
So, the more important is to….. learn ENGLISH WORD ORIGIN!!!!!!!
An impossible to stop laughing fellow student,

Cap’n, you seen “The Man With Two Brains”?
Nice video, by the way, I’m fascinated for other languages, do you know another one? maybe you should try it! (I’m Brazilian, and I speak Portuguese as my maternal language)
Russian sound very close to German to my ears(I don’t know nothing about both)
GTA is a pretty good game, but in nowadays the violence culture dominate the children minds, so I think that people must separate game from reality.
byebye my dear teacher
I’m with him I THINK THERE ARE KIDS WHO DON’T REALIZE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A GAME AND THE REALLITY. SO WE HAVE TO TAKE CARE WITH THEM. EACH GAME HAS AN ADVICE BUT THAT IS NOT ENOUGH CAUSE CHILDRENS …WELL THEY DO MANY THINGS TO GET A VIDEO GAME….NOWADAYS. TAKE CARE FOR YOUR CHILDRENS WHEN THEY PLAY GTA 4
THIS GAME CONTAINS VIOLENCE, REAL SEX SITUATIONS AND USING DRUGS SOO, ITS FUN BUT FOR PEOPLE WITH THE CORRECT MIND AND AGE
Gio, kids are a lot smarter than we often give them credit for. The main character in GTA does not do drugs and the characters that do do drugs end up getting killed. If you drive drunk you end up getting arrested by the police. Yes, the premise of the game is to survive in NY and that involves perhaps becoming a hit man, but it’s a game.
We have to be careful, because if we start censoring games, then we can use that same logic and say that movies teach kids to be violent and then we should perhaps go even further and censor books that show violence as books can teach kids to be violent as well.
I really don’t think the world is as bad a place as the media makes it out to be.. there are less deaths per 100,000 people then ever in history.. the world is actually a much safer place than it was hundreds of years ago.. it’s just that our PERCEPTION of the world, with the constant barrage of media ONLY covering tragedies and not good things, that makes people think the world is a bad place.
Just my 2 cents (wonder why it’s only 2 cents and not 3 cents… hmm.. must investigate
I agree wholeheartedly with Marina.
I’ll add that people have always tended to think that they were/are living in the worst of times. We always tend to look back fondly to the good old days, when children respected their parents, everyone was godly and true, and crime was nearly non-existent.
Such a time never existed. Violence was here long before there were violent video games and violent movies. As an anecdotal example, I’ll point to a documentary I saw last night about the Five Points Gangs in New York (which formed the basis of the DiCaprio movie “Gangs of New York”). Back in the 19th century – Victorian times – New York City was crazy violent – gangs were rampant, drugs, prostitution, gambling, extortion, bribery, vote fixing and election rigging, murder, racketeering….the whole ball of wax. All before video games.
What we need to keep in mind is that the people living back then thought THEY were living in the worst of times, and that in generations past, children were good and kind, and respected their elders, and went to church on Sunday (or temple on Saturday, or mosque on Friday, whatever).
When I was a kid, it was violent cartoons and movies that were going to make the kids violent. They got rid of bugs bunny shooting Elmer Fudd in the face with a rifle, and Wile E Coyote falling the bottom of a canyon – cartoons I watched every Saturday. They got rid of toy cap guns, and “army men.”
Well, Marina, I hope you don’t mind that I decided to “ante up” my “two cents.” After all, my two cents might not be worth a “plug nickel” — well, maybe less than a plug nickel but more more than a “pretty penny.” In any case, it’s a “nickel’s worth of free advice.” I hope I don’t seem as “phony as a three dollar bill” but you can “bet your bottom dollar” that opinions are “a dime a dozen” on this issue.
Gio, Children are exposed to just about the same amount of violence, crimes, etc as they where 50-60 years ago, maybe even hundreds of years ago. Think of the old wild west days. I have found some of my old favorite movies that where rated PG then and today they would be rated PG 13 or R. We as a society try to censor more of what our children are exposed to based on our beliefs. What the result of this is pussyifcation of our society.
I don’t think its censorship we need to be worried about but more like desensitizing our people. The desensitized person is the perfect soldier. The perfect soldiers is the perfect subsidiary of the Military-Industrial complex.
Marina, what is your references for the death rate per 100k in history? The world safer as in what? Violent crimes? Wars? Auto accidents?
Student body, Something everyone should be aware of is that the retail marketing system is all about brainwashing you into thinking you need this and that. Remembering the car commercial, ‘You will look good in the new infinity five.’ Its all about selling you something that you don’t need but making you think that your life will be much better if you buy this widget. In my 22 years of sales, I can not only convince Eskimos to buy ice but also sell the ice maker with bottled water refill kits. I even think I can sell bottled air to people that live in LA. I did play a bit of GTA one or two. I don’t remember which version. I didn’t find anything that attracted me into playing it more or even purchasing the game even then. Yea sure the graphics are better, I can add better computer generated graphics to a bad movie and it would do well in the market. People are attracted to bling. Plain and simple. Even rats like bling. I had a rat that when let out of his cage he would steal shiny objects and hide them under my bed. I don’t know why this is and I should research this someday. I wonder if this has a connection with the so called “Rat Race”?
Oh thats my 2 bits worth.
When I was a kid, it was violent cartoons and movies that were going to make the kids violent. They got rid of bugs bunny shooting Elmer Fudd in the face with a rifle, and Wile E Coyote falling the bottom of a canyon – cartoons I watched every Saturday. They got rid of toy cap guns, and “army men.”
prospero, Yes I remember that day when they decided to do that. It was a big controversy. I remember my mom taking away all our cap guns and army men. Cartoons where kind of violent back then. But Cartoons where originally for adults. I didn’t understand them until I was older.
Oh I forgot to give you a wooden nickel. I do have one around here somewhere.
Really, honest, picked it up at the center for wooden boat in south lake union.
en mi caso tampoco, cuando yo era un niño veia mucha mas violencia que ahora y aun asi nunca cambio mi percepcion del mundo ni mis actitudes, es cierto depende de cada persona
Marina gets it. She may have read my stuff
Gio – you have amazing energy! Gadzooks!
I watched the Molotov lesson twice,
before I even noticed there were subtitles!
Speaking of games, and Russia, and “mucha mas violencia”;
Where exactly does the “game” Russian Roulette come from?
In australia they censored the sex stuff out to allow the games to be imported under a MA15+ rating.
I doubt anyone will read these studies, but I have. The science is solid. Violent media contributes to violent children. I have collected other research as well, based on anthropology, neurology, sociology, psychology to cover all the approaches, variables and levels of analysis. I also have lots of anecdotal material from friends in social work, pediatrics and family counseling. Media violence harms children.
Everyone familiar with me should know or expect that my opinions regarding censorship, language, etc… are very liberal as my posts frequently convey. But this game, which I have played, as well as many other games and mediums with similar content are not healthy for children.
You can argue with me all you want but I’ll scientifically beat the shit out of you.

buttwipebuzzword. What grade are you in?Dear Marina, I’ve heard a couple different ideas about the origin of “God Bless You” or “Gesundheit.” Some people say your heart skips a beat or stops for a split second when you sneeze. I was wondering if that would be an interesting topic to investigate. I’ve seen all your videos by the way, they are amazing. keep doin what you do best.
Hey Marina,
please discuss the origin of “rock bottom”…or if you would rather discuss frustration…you know coming from the video where you are frustrated with those molotov cocktails…
i hope you pick my request(s) this time.

Marina, That was amazing, what a beautiful language. I wouldn’t have understood most of what you said without the subtitles. But you already knew that:) Just russian tank and cocktail molotov. I haven’t got this game, so i can’t help you with the gameplay. You look great as always.

i want to ask for the word
FOOLSCAP paper and TELE from teletubbies and television
Marina, I love the B&W photo of you in that black and white striped top. But the YouTube video color photo that originates from the teacher’s pet segment is NOT flattering at all. Could you please use the B&W photo here, too?
It was cool! The entire video in Russian language. Anyway, GTA is a kick-ass game on PS2. I still love playing retro games like DKC series, Paper Mario games, Legend of Zelda, etc. I can’t count new games out. Super Mario Galaxy is an awesome game for the Wii. Same for SMK foe the Wii.
HI THERE, I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS, YOU’RE AMAZING,, WELL SO, I WANT TO KNOW THE ORIGIN THE WORD

Just curious, Marina. Have you ever seen Fox Animation’s “Anastasia?” It has fun characters and catchy music. I’ve seen it more times than I’m willing to admit. Don’t look for any historical accuracy, though!!!
Hey Marina,
I have a word request. I would like to know the origin of the word Diet. I was wondering how it came to mean both a prescribed selection of foods as well as a legislative assembly.
Thanks so much! ^_^
This video is the first one I’ve ever seen, and I loved it!!! Back in high school I traded yard work for Russian lessons from a little old lady from Poland that had been a U.N. translator after escaping from Poland. That was quite a few years ago. When I went into the Army, they loved that I had this training and wanted me to go to California to continue my studies. I declined as the other part of this deal was that I would have a chance to visit foreign countries for nefarious reasons. Listening to you was enjoyable.
I chose my screen name because it is my last name and because of its translated meaning. My father is of Czech descent, I speak a little of both.
As far as playing GTA, I’ve never played, so I do not know how much control you have regarding throwing. I do know how to make one, such as tying the rag to the bottle to ensure it wont spill much when you throw it. Learned that in a book by Abbie Hoffman written in the late 60’s early 70’s called “steal this book”. He couldn’t find a publisher, so he published it himself.
Hi Marina,
I was wondering if you could explain the word “Prom” to us. I’m interested to know where such a memorable event in life is known by a four letter word that no one really ACTUALLY knows the origin of lol.
Thanks

i was wondering if your next word would be the following:
pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis
Oh yeah..well now try saying it with a mouthful of peanuts
saltine crackers
Hi, I was wondering if you would do one on the word behave.
Depending on the speaker, behave might actually be mistaken for bee hive.
being that I drive a -REAL- 200mph Ferrari 550 (WYO550 on YouTube) I’d take every one of the stupid “Grand Theft Auto” F_____ video games and throw a Molotov cocktail onto them all!
And then I’d dance around the May Pole like a Polish revolutionary who hates Soviet Putin-style oppression

It’s funny how non-Cyrillicists spell «спасибо» as “spaceba”. Almost like “spacebar” but without the “r”.
Oh wow, that’s SO funny…almost!
“Funny” here meaning “strange” and “quaint”.
spacebar – r = spaceba

New request; doppelgangers. hope it is fun one.
Hey Marina its me Matthew I was wondering if you can derive the word “Prom” since its prom season in schools right now and the use of “G-Language” because I hear it everywhere when people want to keep a secret. Thanks a lot Marina
P.S pleaseee let me e one of your teachers pets!!!!

Anyway this was a good episode. Todyua i dont have nothing to say.

Just going down the list, bra being a abbreviation of Brazier from a French word referring to the support for the baby.
put a dime? possible a variation on dropping a dime, the cost of phone calls in the good old days.
Suggestions Threshold – a word that was once quite literal
Boycott – once a mans name.
Boycott is also a place in Bucks.
where d f..k is buck?
Are you joking or do you really not know?
If not, Bucks is short for Buckinghamshire (in England).
i was just joking sexc lips
did anyone understand the subtitles?
I was to busy watching the teachers lips moving russian..does that mean i still got to do my homework Marina?
..is it just me or was that just way too sexier done in russian?
All i know is that The Molotov cocktail, also known as the petrol bomb, gasoline bomb, or Molotov bomb, is a generic name used for a variety of improvised incendiary weapons. Simple to make, they are frequently used by rioters.
The bombs were derisively named after Soviet Foreign Minister, Viacheslav Molotov, by the Finnish people during the Winter War.
now listening: http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=99AKecT_QqQ use it while playing grand theft auto (motivational)..might not get burnt so much
Marina, just a thought before I head out to work: what is the origin of the word “bra”?
you were thinking about a bra on the way to work?
Who doesn’t? C’mon…
was that meant to be a rhetorical question?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhetorical_question
Well, after seeing Marina’s video lesson on the Molotov cocktail I guess I had a couple of things on my mind…..
a couple? Bwhahhahaha..I dont get it?

i got the game on sunday and……its pretty sweet
i havent had a chance to play it that much but so far its good
I love GTA IV, though I am totally stuck on Brucie’s missions cause I suck at racing in GTA games (which is weird, cause if it was Rockstar’s Midnight Club games, I’d easily get that “Top of the Midnight Club” achievement!)
As for the Molotovs, yeah I suck with them too… though from what I understand the deal is you use the AIM button (left trigger for xbox 360) and toss it with the attack button, but you HOLD the attack button, the longer you hold it, the harder you throw it… in theory at least.
SO, I am curious who has what system for GTA IV? I’m an Xbox 360 version user myself, and if any of you out there want to hook up with me in multiplayer sometime, it’s AbsolutGrndZer0
PS3.. hotforwords.. too bad I can’t play you ragabashmoon
can u play with me Marina?
BTW, FWIW, they mixed the gas with other things to make it stick and burn better. Nosdrovia!
Like what?
Sorry, but if I were to tell you that I might get a visit from the MIB/KGB. I don’t need that kind of attention. You’ll have to research it yourself. I’m not the teacher and I’m not about to impart any bomb making info that might get Marina’s site in trouble!
You are very wise, my friend.
I almost posted a recipe from Abbie Hoffman’s “Steal This Book!” re: napalm, but decided against it as well. Just checking, you passed the test. The world is a safer place with you in it.
Peace.
Thanks but I’m afraid that since I collect former Combloc sniper rifles (don’t ask) the jury is still out on that one …. Peace – through superior firepower.
Marina,
What is the origin of saying regards at the end of a letter??
Also how is this word related to saying “in regards to” ??
Alas, this game is probably gonna be a console port over to the Pc and I probably want every play it. I’ve got about three games now that were ports and the controls are so screwy i just end up uninstalling them. Sorry , Marina i guess i flunk this test.
Give me PC or i”ll keep my money
Death to consoles
Don’t knock consoles! They’re unique and everyone should have at least one, even old ones—ESPECIALLY old ones (in working condition, of course). I still have an NES, an SNES, and a gameboy (green screen, though

Why XP 64 bit of course nothing else will do.

Teacher
I was pondering where the phrase “dime out” came from? The context for which I know it correlates to telling on someone for doing something wrong. I just can’t seem to connect “dimes” with giving up information to incriminate someone. Can you enlighten me?
thanks
Devil6
In my experience, I first heard this usage as “drop a dime,” meaning to rat out somebody (and there’s another version of this theme). The term supposedly suggests the act of dropping a dime into a pay phone to make a call as an informer. Later, I noted that the original term had drifted into a new form: “dime out.”
Ditto.
Its incredible, a lot of people know a lot of things about Russia and our language maybe, the next year it won’t be surprising that everybody love matryoshka dolls (матрёшка) or drink Vodka in excess.
Try Kalashnikov vodka. Great stuff. And a cool business case: diversifying from mass production military firearms to fine spirits. Capitalism rocks, eh, Marina?
Its very cool that you did a video in Russian. Yes I play GTA IV on the 360. I think the game is very fun especially playing online co-op with your friends.
Can’t help you with GTA IV, still working on Black on the PS2. Can you explain any of the Russian phrases they use in that game? Or how about what the Russians in Call Of Duty IV are saying? It seems that with the popularity of Kalashnikov rifles more video games are using Russian language. Or maybe it’s just a good way to curse and not have us non-Rusky speakers know what they’re saying about us? сволочи!
«сволочи» isn’t a nice word to be used by non-Ruskies, don’t you think Сниперская?
Hey guys I have an off topic item I would like to Know about. Was Hungary a part of the Soviet Union?
Im not sure but I do know I am getting Hungry. I guess its my lunch time.
Hungry for Turkey?
I was just wondering , I should know, history was my favorite subject in school. Our local University just created a new department recently for Chess studies. The teacher(its probably more that teacher) Is the worlds first Woman Grandmaster in chess. Really neat huh? She is from Hungary
It was an “Iron Curtain” country – part of the “eastern bloc”, but it was always an independent country (or independent in theory anway – I don’t think the Hungarians saw themselves as truly independent). Prior to “the great war” (or world war one – whichever name you prefer) it was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Nick
Absolutely not! In fact, the Hungarians revolted against Soviet occupation authorities in 1956. Heavy fighting in Budapest, but eventually, the Red Army crushed the revolt. Read about it in “The Bridge at Andau,” which was once prescribed reading for adolescent students in the U.S. A bit of anti-communist propaganda…now THERE’s a word…
Yes, I know. I was born at the time of the Hungarian “uprising”. My mother, who was into astrology a lot, seemed to think this was significant so I was reminded of this quite a few times in my childhood.
I was in Budapest not too long after the Berlin wall came down. I remember seeing bullet holes still in some of the buildings on the way to the city centre from the airport.
Nick
Now that was Great Marina.
Do Have a Good Week.
An Admirer,
Billy
Dea HotForWords Teacher,
What is another word for “Thesaurus’?
I’d like to know the origin of that.
Well, let’s see…Is it
(1) the name of a dinosaur whose most notable characteristic was a vast and rich vocabulary?
(2) derived from ancient Greek θησαυρός thesauros, meaning “storehouse” or “treasury”?
(3) The surname of the author, Roget Thesaurus?
I’ll go for 2. thesauros = the s(t)aur (h)o(u)s(e).
Very interesting. Practice your “W”s
Hey Marina,
I would like to recommend the word “Bistro.” I know this word comes from Russian roots, so if you can explain it using your knowledge of Russian, that would be great!!!
Thanks!
Hoodster
P.S. Maybe you could do a show of words with Russian roots that we stool…
It was never really a russian word because they have a different word for Beef. But as many already know, French speakers have allmost the same word for beef as English speakers.
Napoleon’s army occupied Moscow. Restaurants there served a beef and pasta dish, which pleased the French officers. “Boeuf Stroganoff” was recreated in Paris soon after.
TD, are you suggesting that “bistro” is an abbreviation of “beef” + “stroganoff”: bi(f)stro(ganoff)?
Dear Teacher:
Very nice video. Very nice your investigation, russian language sound nice but I prefer the class in English.
Regards
Alidor
The ‘w’ sound is oa in cryllic
So why use this at the beginning of video when v has it’s own character в ?
English with a Russian accent is off the scale sexy
Russian with a Russian accent is not
Russian with an American accent a definately not …sorry.
Speak for yourself! Language ITSELF is sexy.
Apparently (I’m English) English with an English accent (at least when spoken by a man) is quite sexy to a lot of American women. And English with a Scottish accent is off the scale sexy to some American women.
I actually think Russian sounds cool. If I was a woman I might even think it sounds sexy as it seems to suit a masculine voice better – just like French sounds feminine.
Nick
Yes French sounds feminine (and I’m male and partly French).
Consider this, though: Russian sounds sexy when spoken by a female, but commanding (or powerful) when spoken by a male!
Who else feels this way?…
I’d agree with Russian sounding commanding when spoken by a man. I don’t think it is particularly sexy or commanding when spoken by a woman – but English spoken by a woman with a Russian accent is definitely mega sexy. Russian spoken by a Russian woman is – well – just OK – it doesn’t sound bad or anything – it just doesn’t have an easy label.
But there must be different Russian accents. I remember when I was learning Russian (this was in the 70s) my Russian teacher said that he had been to Moskva and he reported that the Moskovites thought he was from Georgia (Georgia the country – not the American state). So there must be different accents over there too – there can’t just be “russian” accent.
Nick
Of course not.
Likewise, until recently, Belarusian and Ukrainian were considered merely dialects of Russian; hence the epithets White Russian and Little Russian.
The speech of a Muscovite woman is at least worth listening to (unless you’re gay…)
And, again, yes, there are so many dialects of Russian—well, let’s put it this way, there’s not just ONE Russian accent. ’Sides, Russia is HUGE!
Here in the US, years back, kids enjoyed a cartoon spoof of the Cold War dastardly duo, Boris and Natasha Badanoff, nemeses of Bullwinkle and Rocky. Every time I hear a Russian woman, I think of Natasha!
By the way NW, how easy is it for you Brits to fake an American accent? and can you pick up our Southern accents distinctly, the way many of us here can discern Scot and Irish accents pretty well (but get lost trying to figure out Welsh ones.)?
I’ve spoken French for a number of decades, and I’ve spent about 3 years of my life (in bits and pieces) in France. I’ve heard the language so much that I don’t have any notion of whether it sounds feminine or masculine. It’s just French to me. I think a lot of American women find men who speak French quite sexy (Maurice Chevalier and Yves Montand made women swoon way back when), and I personally find French very sexy when spoken by a woman (that’s why my girlfriend is French!). I don’t care much for the sound of most languages. But I’ve always loved the French language.
I used to have a Yugoslavian girlfriend (long before the country fragmented into smaller countries), and she introduced me to Serbo-Croatian. I find this language very appealing, especially visibly (the words have a great science fiction look to them) but, alas, it’s spoken by so few…
Back in 1994-95, when I was being a bohemian in Paris, I had some Russian friends who were artists working in front of Notre-Dame, and I found that I really liked the Russian language as well. I therefore enjoyed listening to Marina speak Russian!
I also find the Vietnamese and the Ethiopian languages very easy on the ears.
I find German quiite funky. I spent one year in German class in college, and I’ve forgotten every word I learned. The funny thing is that my ancestry is English/Austrian, so my paternal ancestors spoke German.
I’m always amazed that people who speak Dutch don’t cough and gag themselves to death. I have a long-time friend who is Dutch, and I’m also a huge fan of Paul Verhoeven’s Dutch language films. Dutch is the most guttural language I can imagine, though Arabic comes a close second (I have a close friend who speaks Arabic).
I’m pretty apathetic about most languages. I don’t care for Spanish, though I studied it for 2-1/2 years and retain a fair amount of reading comprehension. Italian fails to excite me. I’m not really familiar enough with Danish or the other Scandinavian languages to offer an opinion on them. I do not care for Asian languages (with the above-mentioned exception of Vietnamese).
The point is that the appeal of other languages seems to be a personal preference, kind of like music and art. I can think of no more appealing a language than French, but I have no clue as to why. If I were to learn another language, and time and availiability of native speakers were not an issue, I would probably choose Serbo-Croatian. My next preference would be Russian (it has macho appeal when spoken by a man, and it’s sexy when spoken by a woman) or German (for amusement and out of respect for my ancestry).
I have a lot of respect for multilingual people. I reached a plateau (years ago) in French where I just coast, rarely learning anything new. It would be nice to have the time to learn other languages, so that I could speak four or five. When you speak another language, you think about things in a slightly different way, and you actually tailor your thoughts to the demands of that language. There are some things that simply cannot be said in one language or another, so when another language has a word for something that your own langauge does not, you actually get to experience a thought that you never had before. There are a number of multilinguists on Marina’s web site, so you know what I mean.
Anyway, language and etymology are fascinating subjects.
huh? not even putin sounds commanding.
another mccain ad. ^^
replying to trainerdave, I guess a lot of Brits are not so good at immitating American accents – mainly because they are heard less and the one’s you do hear are on the news mainly from people who tend to speak with relatively little accent. Some are good at it – but they are good at different Brit accents too. I can do a decent Southern drawl and my son can do New York ok. I guess it helps that I have two Brit born but now thoroughly American aunts – one now living in Georgia and the other a bit ouside NY.
Y’all keep safe now.
Nick
2hotforwordsfanclub, have you ever heard a Russian say “Wodka”?

ok so i would like to hear what the world l33t origin and why do people use it?
Uh….
I’d have a great sound file all about l33tspeak to link to you… however it’s no longer online at this time…
So, I will just say this instead…
1F U C4N R34D 7H15 U R34LLY N33D T0 G37 L41D
And what if you can TYPE it?
Actually, it’s from a t-shirt, and I had to look at the t-shirt as I carefully typed it.
*whistles innocently*
I do not translate that crap for my teams when fighting Freakshow in City of Heroes and City of Villains… Anyone that tells you I do has me confused with someone else.
Actually if you want to hear the sound file I wish I could link, go to http://www.thecaperadio.com and ask in the forums about the l33t PSA. Hopefully one of the DJs can link it for you or whatever. It’s hilarious because I totally agree iwth it… l33tspeak annoys me to no end, the fact that I can actually read it annoys me even further, because in case you couldn’t tell, I was joking above… when fighting Freakshow someone always will say “What the hell did he just say?!!?” and lo and behold I’m left to translate. Luckily, I play on a mostly RP server, so I don’t see that crap from players, just from the freakshow enemies where it’s a total joke that they actually talk like that.
Now I’m curious… because I DO know the origin of all this l33tspeak, Marina, are you even going to consider doing this, or is it ok if I just answer it so you don’t have to lobotomize yourself?
(snicker
)

The comment doesn’t make sense. Who DOESN’T need to get laid?
w00t!
Ok, when it gets that far into the l33t it actually takes time for me to read…
I didn’t get it; what did aLx say?
STFU Lamer
OIC…
heh. n4ps. ;P
*cries because the l33t just won’t leave me alone*
well, l33t starts with “lol” and the like. which you used in another post. so you’re using this “crap”, too. heh.
try to see it as a language. I think it is. and no language is better or worse than any other.
k? l8r, d00d.
No, actually it didn’t start with lol, it started with All Your Base Are Belong to Us, then it got shorted to “I own you” then someone mistyped I PWN you… then it got to hey let’s misspell on purpose to be kewl. Abbreviation and substitution of letters and numbers with purposeful misspellings are very very different.
no, that’s not what I meant. sry for not being clear on this one. I didn’t mean “start” in a time sense.
I meant to say that when you use “lol” you’re already knee-deep in l33t country. ;P
I love AYBABTU!
No, LOL is not knee-deep in l33t country. They have totally separate origins. Internet abbrev. and l33t are totally separate things.
hm. no one seems to be sure about the origins of leetspeak, except you.
well, whatever, since most people on here think that wikipedia is a reliable source — read the wiki article on “leet”, you’ll find “lol” there, too.
well, if you still think “lol” and leet are two totally separaty things, let me make it easy:
l0l, lo1, l0|_, |_ol, |_o|_, etc. etc. — l33t enough?
Whatever, I’m through with this, it’s already getting too heated, and I really don’t want to see it escalate any further and get either of us in trouble with Marina, so let’s just forget it, ok?
k.
maybe we should request a lesson on it, though? +35+ h3|2 1337 $|<!|_lz?
Hi Marina,
I received the error message that the video was no longer available again. So I put aside my frustration at not being able to see me favorite teacher to try a few things. For some reason unplugging my modem cleared it up, at least for a while . I don’t know if this will help find the problem but I did come up with a word origin question in the process. Where does the word ‘Glitch’ come from.
As always, thanks for the entertaining education.
Mark
One last comment from me regarding the correct “coctali”.
I have talked to me ex-military friemnds, first therte was no styrofoam back then.
They all said it was a 2:1 gas:oil mixture. you needed the heat to drive the [people out of the tank.
I have had occasion to make a few so-called Molotov cocktails in my time. There’s really no prescribed formula. Gasoline is a very common ingredient because it has a very low flashpoint. But diesel fuel will work, and a mixture of gasoline and oil is sometimes used, or gasoline and paraffin. In fact, you can even stop up the throat of the bottle with paraffin, which is handy, because this makes the bombs easy to transport (when you stop them with a rag, the fuel “wicks” out of the rag and evaporates…and causes a dangerous mess, as well). But please…DON’T TRY THIS AT HOME.
In case you’re wondering how to write it in Japanese, here’s what it looks like: 忍者. Pretty cool, huh?
Can’t see it I think we all need to install that language.
Oops! Sorry.
Try this:
忍者.
I don’t know if this means anything but in Chinese (my native language) 忍者 means a “person who endures”.
Thought you ought to know.
Yes, I knew that. And I was relieved that it didn’t mean “person who cuts jugular veins undetected”!
By the way, the best molotov cocktails have a thickening agent mixed in with the gasoline (Motor oil, dish soap, even styrofoam) so that the liquid will stick to the target. I’ve actually seen some things the Finns used during the war, even a catapult made from a truck’s leaf spring to hurl cocktails.
Marina;
why do you play GTA while you can play HItman?
I recommend it,is a little bit frustrating at the beginning, but you can develop your own strategies to accomplish all the objectives and you will learn a lot about weapons.
Thanks you, because is the first time I appear in one of your videos
Hum your not leaving the club of unwanted/unloved pets are you? You have to be mentioned as a teachers pet before you can graduate from C.O.U.P. Or should it be called Society of unloved/unwanted pets (S.O.U.P.)?
I am not leaving the club of unwanted pets…. someday I wish to became the Teacher’s Pet and leave this Glorious Club, but till then.
SOUP? Hmm. I like it! Since it IS a kind of BROTHerhood!
Groan! That was just plumb gruel and unusual.
Oh I love Hitman too….
Hitman the game or Hitman the online persona?
The game(s). And actually the movie too… for being a video game movie, Hitman was actually quite amazingly done. Course, having Vin Diesel as the executive producer could very well be a reason why. He’s a hardcore gamer, both “tabletop” and video games. On the set of Chronicles of Riddick he even taught Dame Judi Dench how to play D&D!
I was hoping they would make a sequel to The Chronicles of Riddick (which was itself a sequel to Pitch Black). It’s actually a very creatively conceived sci-fi movie.
Yeah, me too but unfortunately, CoR didn’t do as well as they’d hoped. I still need to get the Directors Cut myself, I do have the CoR: Pitch Black Director’s Cut… it’s really cool it shows you that Riddick is really a GOOD man, driven to be bad by the government. Like in the special features there is uh darnit i never remember hisname but the BH that caught him Pitch Black… anyway, he’s after Riddick and Riddick as about to escape for good when the guy grabs a little girl and puts a gun to her head and says “If you don’t surrender, I’ll blow this little girl’s brains out” and Riddick actually surrenders to save the little girl, and that’s how he ended up on that ship in Pitch Black. I read the novelization of Pitch Black, and it gives his history, he was actually speaking out against unsafe practices at a mine, so when he turned out to be right, they blamed the accident on him, said it was sabotage, and so those were his first “murders” and since then pretty much every “murder” has been a bounty hunter after him, or guards and such when escaping. he’s never actually killed anyone that wasn’t trying to kill him
I really like that about him.
ragabashmoon, I have the Unrated Director’s Cut of “The Chronicles of Riddick,” and it’s worth the investment. Buy it and enjoy it!
Oooh yeah I know I mean I’ve SEEN it.. just don’t OWN it… I LOVE the added scenes, they sooo much more explain that it’s not just a hardcore sci-fi world, it’s sooo unique and rich and it’s really too bad that it wasn’t the hit it should have been… So you played Escape from Butcher Bay? I need to get it again, I had a bit of a financial crunch a year or so back, had to sell some of my older games for a bit of cash (though the place I sold to is very nice about how much they pay… it’s not like $2 to you and $20 when they resell, more like $15 to you and $20 to resell, I love them, and then if you do trades, they give you darn near what they are going to sell it for plus 10% store credit) to get through the month, that’s the one I kinda wish I’d kept.
Dang, ragabashmoon! What store is this? Seriously!
CD Tradepost. They rock.
What state, city?
Uh lots across the country…. http://www.cdtradepost.com You can even tell the website what you want, and as long as the store participates in the online wish list (most of them do, a few do not), you could live in Kansas and have the Oklahoma store email you that they have your item(s). Then it’s just $3 extra for S&H.
Ok maybe not all over the country, but KS, MO, NE, and IA.
Kewl.
Yeah, the “w” sound seems to be a problem for quite a lot of people, not just Russian speakers. Also “h” is a problem for Russians too I think, maybe “th” as well. Certainly quite a lot of people have problems with that one as well.
BUT…. you’re lucky you don’t have to learn languages the other way. Some Russian words are soooooo full of consonants.
AND…. what about that letter that looks like a sort of “w” with a little tail – “shch” – try saying that quickly in the middle of a longer word when you’re drunk and not a native Russian speaker!
And not to mention, what was it, some 6 different cases for three different genders. At least the genders are regular and the spelling phonetic
unlike English
Nick
Russian (proper) has /h/, but only in a few loanwords; e.g., Гитлер (Hitler).
w with tail = щ /ʃʧ/
