  9. The word Snafu was correct another was FUBAR fouled (Fucked) up beyond all reason. But there is one acronym that was only found in the Submarine Service and it was BOHICA when an officer asked what Bohica meant? he would be told that it meant Basic Orientation Here In Canning Apples!, but the enlisted ranks new it meant “Bend Over Here It Comes Again”, and it was in reference to a very bad decision made by the Captain.

  11. Hey HotforWords, I’ve always live in this city of sin for 11 years now but never really Thought much about the name of it. So I was wondering can you do a video on the city named:

    Las Vegas, NV

    • Bob says: 112.1

      A fertile field of enquiry.

    • Las Vegas is Spanish for “the meadows,” as in the Meadows Mall on Meadows Ave. just to the east of Decatur. I’ve been here since October 6, 1995. Nevada, of course, is Spanish for “snowcapped.” Of course, we go to great pains to insist that the official pronunciation of the state’s name incorporates a short vowel a, as in “ad” as opposed to “odd.” Seeing as how you posted on the Penthouse video, perhaps you were also thinking about the Palms’ fairly new Playboy tower a bunny hop south of Flamingo? I do like the architecture.

  12. Marina,
Considering it is my user name, could you tell me what the origin of the word ‘millionaire’ is? Also, you have gotten me intrested in language. If only I had a teacher like you in school… maybe I would have learned a bit more. Thank you.

  15. Hi Marina

I am curious after the meaning of the words “sanguilent” and “elysium”.
In a short 2-year Latin course i have followed sanguilent had to do something with the word for blood in Latin. Therefore I think it means “bleeding” but I am not sure.
I also think the word “elysium” means heaven but I am not sure of that either.

I would really like it if you could sort this out for me (us).

    Thanks in advance

    Maarten

  16. kcarney says: 107

I’m guessing the other english word derived from appendicium is appendix.

I heard a story about the origion of the word “shotgun” to mean the place next to the driver. The story is that in the days of stage coach carriages in the American West (think of the stage coach in the Wells Fargo Bank commercials), there were always two people sitting on the top of the coach. One held the reins and was the driver. The other held the shotgun and was the security guard. As such, sitting in the position next to the driver became known as “riding shotgun”.

  17. what she say I couldn’t get past her chest and didn’t hear a thing she said. whew

  21. Hi Marina.
Could you possibly tell me the origin of the word: decadence- I’ve always wondered how it came to be, so who better to investigate!? Hope you are well anyway.

  22. Hi Marina-

I have a word request that you might find interesting to investigate: bulldozer – it has nothing to do with a bull, and doesn’t doze. A person who bulldozes may be a bully, but he isn’t driving a bulldozer. Bulls may sometimes doze, but they don’t bulldoze.

What is going on here, Marina?

Marina, I would like to learn the origins of the word “Approximate”. I am in Law Enforcement and use the word alot in my reports and have always wondered where it came from. Thank you.

    JRod

    • As anyone in Law Enforcement should know, a “cellmate” is the guy behind the same bars as you, and “approximate” is the guy who doubles for him while your actual mate is busy digging the escape tunnel.

  35. Sorry, madrid, but I must disagree.

It seems to me that there are plenty of mammaries exposed in various media so why should Marina, who already has a huge following just by virtue of her charismatic delivery and intelligence, choose to honor this request?

Plus, it wouldn’t help her cause (intelligence is sexy). Think about it. Her market niche wouldn’t be widened; it would probably be narrowed quite a bit instead. Her appearing topless would only serve to shut her videos out of many places and cheapen the whole experience, in my humble opinion.

  36. chaloner says: 86

I got a word for you. How about the word “VOODOO”? It’s a odd weird name so how did it get its name and whats the origin :?:

  37. madrid says: 85

Make a topless!!!!! Come on!!!!! Support me people say YES!!!! Everybody want to see Marina in topless If you want to see her in topless make more comments asking her to make topless!!!!

    • nw2394 says: 85.1

Don’t you think she is sexy already :)

Also, some things – well – the imagination is pretty good.

      Nick

    • Absolutely not. Marina is way too classy and too smart to pander to some girls-gone-wild, pre-pubescent sexual fantasy. Women who work the sex trade generally relegate themselves to that industry and no others and have relatively short, uneventful careers. Marina could work as a speech pathologist and make an easy $200 grand or more a year for the rest of her life with her background in linguistics.

    • As I mentioned previously (and maybe even prior to that!), Marina could actually do a topless video and still retain a degree of modesty by simply doing what Sports Illustrated recently did with its “swimsuit” models, i.e., apply body paint so that she appears to be wearing a top. Of course, she probably would not want to lean in too close to the camera….

    • svoboda says: 85.4

Topless? why would you want her to do a video showing only her legs and thighs? Then again, she does have nice legs. But I like the head.
Besides, fantasies are always better than reality. Leaving her like this leaves her perfect for me.

    • BillyB says: 85.5

You still on this soapbox. Ask something else, go on then, think of someting else… ease into it… you can do it. be strong. Think about how Marina thinks of your request, she puts herself out there already for her students & admirers… relax & enjoy, be grateful already. You sound like Britney… “gimme more”… Sorry madrid I can’t support your campaign. Change your poitics & I might support you.

    • koalabear says: 85.6

Topless? No, I can’t support you madrid.

Marina’s videos are informative AND entertaining, which is not easy to do. Let alone make it work on the internet.
It’s very interesting what Marina has created and is doing on the web.
There is no manual to explain what to do or how to do it – Web2 as it is often referred to, is an unknown media.

    • Bob says: 85.7

Looks like you’re on your own here, Madrid.
If you want to look at unfettered breasts, there are more than enough places on the web to do so; why don’t you go there and stop your sexual harassment of Marina?
She doesn’t need to attract that sort of attention to herself.
      Get Real Madrid.

    • tayljim says: 85.8

I also agree with the majority here that Marina should not
do a topless video and I’m sure she does not like the
continued pressure to do one. There are more then
enough X rated sites on the web to satisfyyour lust for
      videos of topless women.

  51. webguytv says: 71

I wish to know the origin of the Spanish word: “Gringo”. I understand that it means “white guy”…. is this the real meaning of “Gringo”?

    • “Gringo” is not Spanish per se, but Mexican. During the punitive expeditions into Mexico by General “Black Jack” Pershing to catch Pancho Villa in the early 1900’s, the soldiers of the 3rd Cavalry would sing their regimental marching song “Green Grow The Rushes, Ho!” The Mexicans heard the words “Green Grow” and mistakenly applied them as “Gringo” to all the soldiers and over time to todos los Americanos Nortenos..

      • I thought the line was something like, “Green grow the lilacs all covered with dew.” Or maybe they’re different lines from the same song…

      • pennsyltucky9, There are several versions of the song, from sentimental ballads to Irish jigs. It’s from a poem by Scottish poet Robert Burns. In its’ original form it was “rashes” not “rushes” and may have existed long before Burns put it to pen. Knowing how Cavalry troopers were I’m betting it was more of a drinking song than pretty ballad and they had some lyrics that weren’t “politically correct” as well as more than their fair share of “rashes” from the lassies, Ho!
The lyrics to the Cav’s version of the song have been “lost to history” (thankfully)!
(you can find numerous versions of it on youtube)

      • Correction: YOU (or someone else who shares an interest) can find numerous versions of it on youtube. I’m way too deep in homework to sift through all the billions of submissions there. I barely have time to check in on my friends HERE, fer chrissake.

Thanks for responding, though. See you after finals.

  52. I want to know the meaning of ”Mermaid” As I know already, The mermaid is one of the most popular figures in world folklore. Her characteristic appearance is as a nubile young girl, with long hair and a fish tail, carrying a comb and a mirror. Unlike the other part-human, part-animal creatures of myth and folklore, mermaids have been the object of many sightings up to the present day; it is as if there is a desire to prove the reality of mermaids, which makes them closer to creatures such as the Loch Ness monster and the Yeti than to centaurs and sirens. But that still doesn’t help me with the word, And how people came up with it. Please Help Me.

      • No, BillyB, but thanks for the vid. It reminds me of how conformist we are as a society today. The advent of photography 150 years ago shows us the extent to which personal freedom was appreciated and exercized. Just look at photos of soldiers from the American Civil War, and photos of 19th century U.S. Presidents. Long hair, short hair, muttonchops, goatees…
        What happened?

      • The US as become a paranoid policing state. I don’t know how this came about but I do see it growing. Here is one small example of policing that has a few gremlins in its system.
See: Are You a Security Threat? http://gcaptain.com/maritime/blog/are-you-a-security-threat/
Im required by law to purchase a TWICs card to be used as ID. In order for me to keep my Captain’s license I have to pay TSA $135.00 US to get this card. Most mariners carry a MMD card (Merchant Marine ID) that uses the same background check at a TWICs card. MMD card cost about the same. There is talk about combining the two cards because they are similar. But no word when this will come about.

Mark my words. There will become a day when all US citizens will be required to purchase a US Passport as federal ID. Take a look at this article: Papers Please – welcome to the US. Hey, we never left!

You’re truly amazing! Another stellar video in the proverbial “can,” as it were. I’m surprised to see that there are no stars to rate it with, however.

Appendix, appendicitis, and the verb append all seem to fit the answer criterion, but those are too easy! I suspect you’re looking for something a little more toward the obscure reference category.

If I weren’t up to my ears in research, I’d consider ferreting out more detailed word references, but I come here to cool off between studying, writing, more studying, and more writing. I’ll leave the hardscrabble derivation searches up to somebody with endless time and a faster connection.

0 zzzzz. Do well on Maxim show Marina. Have fun, sounds like you usually do. Does it go out “Live”, or is there any edit?

    • BillyB says: 16.1

Hey, the rest of todays quote came in, thought ot was incomplete before.

      • Marina says: 16.1.1

It’s live BillyB…. recording it right now to put up in a few minutes. the quotes get messed up if they have a semi-colon in the middle of them…

      • Are you talking about the quote of the day that’s always under the “Recent Comments” list? I love those quotes.

The Churchill one today is great. It’s funny, was a Conservative Party member in his 20s, and then switched to the liberals in 1904 when he was 30. He didn’t rejoin the Conservative Party until he was almost 50. His great quote was “…anyone can rat, but it takes a certain ingenuity to re-rat.”

The funniest quote attributed to Churchill is about a woman who said to him, “Sir, you are drunk! and Churchill responded, “Yes, and you, madam, are ugly. But in the morning, I shall be sober!”

What a fantastic video Marina. Someday you will have a nicer penthouse , condo, or yacht. Just keep dreaming and take every opportunity as it comes by you. As for me my boat is my dream home. Never thought I would ever get that chance or thought that I would want to live on a yacht. A lady once told me she lived on her yacht. She said where else can you find a million dollar view for cheap? Shes right! You can rent water front property for $300 to $700 a month. If you ever have to move you don’t have to rent a U-Haul truck. Just start the engine and pull all the mooring lines and away you go. I got into living on a yacht because I found out a secret that other boaters where not sharing. Its least costly to live on a yacht than a condo in Seattle or just about anywhere. ssshhhh don’t tell anyone, because then everyone will move on the water.
I have a good friend that is living on his yacht completely free of a dock. He has solar panels and a wind generator that makes his electricity. So he doesn’t even pay for moorage. Check out his website: http://kylecase.com
Hey I just thought of something funny. What if Marina live on a yacht at a Marina, In Marina Del Ray?

Marina, love the video outtakes of you watching the bird. Funny you made Cuckoo sound instead of a cheap cheap sound. I wonder if it means your going cuckoo for cocoa puffs?

Hey Cap: Are you in California? I Just got back from visiting my friend in Halfmoon Bay. He lives on his catamaran, and he took us out sailing on it. I would really like to do that some day. He may be leaving the country soon for missionary work and told me that I could stay on his boat to take care of it while he is gone. It would be at least 2 years. The only problem is that it puts me about 2 hours from most of my work assignments. I still might do it though. Regarding Marinas apartment, I am sure she will upgrade soon, but I love the fact that she does her videos from what looks like a small apartment. She deserves to be rich, but I love the humble look. I think most women would have put up a backdrop of some kind to hide the kitchen. The videos wouldn’t have half of the appeal they have now.

      • No not yet. Will be soon. I haven’t decided on San Francisco Bay or some where Los Angeles basin, like Del Ray or Long Beach.
Half moon Bay? Where? B.C. or Cali?
Dude, you should do it. At least for the experience of it to say “Hey I did that!” I have to warn you though. You might love it and never return to land again. If you do decided to live aboard, send me an email and I’ll help you if any questions arise. Its a different life style so might be somewhat weird at times but you will understand this is really the way to live. Just ask Morgan Freeman. He and Myrna have a Shannon 43 sailboat. They love the boat and the sailing lifestyle. If you like privacy, its the way to go.
Marina is rich in lots of things. She has most of the tools needed to convert it to wealth. She just needs good solid plans to build it.
Marina did put a back drop on some of her videos. I think she gave up on that idea. Your right they do have more appeal. I long to know more about who Marina is and what her life is like.

Damn passed my bed time.. Got to run bye.

    • Cap’n, nice idea, but those of us who live on land don’t have to worry about our homes sinking… of course you probably don’t have to worry about termites….

    • geronimo says: 14.3

He has let stay on the boat before while he was out of town, and I really do like it. Halfmoon Bay is about 30 miles south of San Francisco. It is very beautiful and the fishing is good. When you come to California you have to check it out, and also Monterey, Bodega Bay and Fort Bragg. Fort Bragg is the best but it is way too far away from work for me. http://www.fortbragg.com/fort-bragg-attractions.php
      http://www.city-data.com/picfilesv/picv25536.php

      http://www.beachcalifornia.com/beach/monterey-bay.html

I will let you know when I do it. I will save my money while on the boat and when he returns I can buy my own.

      • Hey I spent a few days in Monterey Bay many moons ago. The Battleship Missouri was there sometime back in 1986 I think. I loved that town. Was Arnold mayor of Monterey Bay back then? Thanks for the link. Brings back memories.

You going to really do it? How very cool!!!
You have to tell me how you like it. Living on a boat is not for everyone but for those who make it work its totally awesome. I never want to live in a shack near a penthouse, an apartment with noisy neighbors, a condo with nosy neighbors, and a mansion ever again. I love living on the water. So much privacy. Something not of the norm. Fantastic view of the water. Cheap living (but don’t tell everyone) Oh and most of all… Freedom.

Visit my website contact page Geronimo and send me a message so I can get your email. I want to keep in contact and hear how things go with your live-a-aboard experiences.

BTW I’m a youtuber & I married a wonderfull woman who years ago held the honourable title “Miss Innertubes” at a local Inner tube race event. Couldn’t resist telling the kids that a little while ago & I got the “Look”, as if it were the deepest, darkest secret I’d revealed, all good now. Cheers.

      • 9 hours a day of class is where Im at today. I’m instructing the boys from Time Bandit and one gal from Campbell Tugs. Its a rigorous 12 and half days of class room instruction time. I should be done by the 26th. Then I move to the city of Kirkland for the summer.
Next game? Bluff me? I can only hope. I saw pass the pretty face and boobs to find some gray matter that interested me enough to visit this site. And all you guys (where are the gals?) here also to share words, and have fun conversations. Im addicted!!!

      • Yes I did Mike! Sorry didn’t reply yet. My accelerated 100 ton Masters class takes a lot out of me. I get a zillion emails that just pile up on me. That was a wicked cool prom photos. I never went to prom. I thought it was stupid at the time. When I see Lemmings running somewhere I usually run the other way.

Appendiculum? I’d guess the word “append”, meaning to add on to, or something which is added, like an appendage or an appendix. As in the sentence “I ‘append to add a room on to the side of me ‘ouse and me bloomin’ mother in law moved in with us!” (With a thick British accent.)

  108. Warren says: 8

    Thanks again Marina.

    Appendix?
    Appendage?

  109. prospero811 says: 7

    My guess would be “appendix.”

  110. prospero811 says: 6

In honor of seeing regular unleaded at $3.99 9/10 today….word of the day:

Bad fuel day: The mood or feeling one experiences after having just filled his or her vehicle with $4.00+ per gallon gasoline. (Usually consists of a sense of great economic despair, impending doom, anger, frustration, depression and/or a combination of all the above)

    • Bob says: 6.1

      Good Morning Proz,
So you think you have it hard, do you?
Cheapest price I can find for regular unleaded in Aberdeen today is GBP 1.08/liter which comes out at USD 9.52/gallon.
Thank the gods I’m old enough to have a bus pass!

      • Well, it’s all relative. The price per gallon here has nearly doubled since January, 2006. It’s the rate of increase that’s tough to deal with.

      • Why is fuel so expensive there? Are there a lot of taxes applied?

      • Bob says: 6.1.3

        46% Fuel Duty + 15% Sales Tax.
The government is trying to make it so expensive for ordinary people to drive that they will abandon their cars and leave the roads free for politicians to hog.

      • aLx says: 6.1.4

        I think it’s about 1.52 € / liter over here in germany. that’d be … 2,37 USD / liter … which makes … 8.97 usd / gallon.

fuel is expensive b/c we don’t inva… never mind.

      • We have a gas station here in Fayetteville, NC that still at $3.02 for regular. But alas  it’s closed down. he couldn’t afford to buy the gas himself to sell to customers..

      • pagedoll says: 6.1.6

9.52 a gallon!? Dont worry folks thats coming to the US soon…How do think there gunna pay that “change” everyone is barking about :???:

      • aLx – If you are referring to the invasion of Iraq, that cannot be responsible for lower oil prices in the U.S. – we still buy at the same market prices as oil is sold in Europe and everywhere else. The U.S. produces about 40% of its own oil and of the remaining 60%, most of that comes from Canada (the number one oil exporter to the U.S.), followed by Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Nigeria and Venezuela. Iraq is WAY behind all of those countries. Had their not been an Iraq War, then the price of oil globally would likely have been higher, including oil imported by Europe (since Iraq’s oil exports were strictly curtailed under the sanctions regime – which the Europeans and the Chinese violated, but not the Americans).

      • In Manchester England petrol hit £1.15 a litre today . Most of it is tax traditionally and has recently escalated due to oil prices and will now skyrocket because of our major participation in Iraq as US main partner.
I still ask where were the WMDs ? I agree with Alx sorry proz.

      • I sold my car. Bought a electric scooter. Use the bus when I can. Moved out of the apartment, bought a sailboat. I filled up the tank about 5 months ago. Still have 3/4 full tank. Rent is $425.00 a month. Living better than a movie star, doing just fine. The only gas pinch I feel is in the number of students in my classes.

  111. Bob says: 5

    Oh! Marina,
You’re keeping me on my toes with your deliberate mistakes, aren’t you.
In the video you appear to say “appendiculum”, whilst on the screen you display “appendicium”.
However, in the Latin-English dictionary I can only find:-
    appendicula = a small addition/appendix/annex; appendage
appendicum = an appendage (no i before the u)
    appenditia = appendages; appurtenances
appenditium = appurtenance; accessory; hanging cloth(eg curtain); pent-house. (t in place of the c)
So, assuming you mean the latter, as it contains the translation “pent-house”, you have me foxed (you foxy minx).
All the “append-” words in the OED seem to be attributed to the French “apendre” and thence the Latin “appendere”, or direct from Latin “appendix”, except for “appendicle” which is attributed to “appendicula” which is itself a diminutive form of “appendix”.

BTW, sorry I distracted you by walking on the roof.

    • An appendiculum is the small end of the furculum.

      • Bob says: 5.1.1

From The Free Dictionary (Online) :-
        Fur´cu`lum
        n. 1. (Anat.) The wishbone or merrythought of birds, formed by the united clavicles.

My wishbone is definitely connected to my Merrythoughts bone.

    • No.
She definitely pronounces it as it should be pronounced- Appendicium.
      It’s just her accent.

I’ve noticed that she makes very few mistakes.
She seems to be quite meticulous and thorough in everything she does tbh.

Just take the way she writes for example- her thoughts are always well structured with very few errors.
In fact i often wonder if she has a slightly obsessive/perfectionistic personality because of this thoroughness (that’s a compliment BTW).

      • Bob says: 5.2.1

Me? Suggesting that teacher had made an error?
        (John McEnroe impression coming up)
        You can’t be serious, Man!

Maybe I should have put the phrasedeliberate mistake in quotation marks; sorreee.

    • Bob says: 5.3

OK, by Googlycheating I have discovered that appendicium is an alternative form of appenditium, maybe a newer form as it appears to be labelled M.L. which I presume is middle or modern Latin. :???: :?: :???:

Still foxed about the other English word though.
