At one time only watch the videos with no comments, random lesson…a gutter is where waste management(manure) is handled and then the birds snipe through it for food. :???: Russian Roulette. St.Petersburg subway bombing word request(roulette)

  3. i knew about the birds been snipes but the sniper is not just a person used to slot people at long ranges like officers but most of there work is reconnisence to watch people and gather information for commanders in the base. sniper battles are rare but have happened as in the famous battle at stalingrad between the famous vastieli seightseth im not sure how its spelt maybe u can help me. against the major of the german sniper school. most snipers when taking shots are used in close support of main attacking as they provide good cover. the ghille suit used by snipers also came about through scottish gamekeepers in the early 20th century and became battlefield snipers as they could utilise the ghille suit to become almost invisible.

I´m a gutter-snipe  —————-> *lady-killer*  (if it just would be true  )

  5. I thought a snipe was a ficticous animal. When I was younger the older kids would send the younger ones on a “snipe hunt” just to get rid of them for a while.

  6. matalexwolf says: 94

    A Gutter Snike,,,,,snipe

Thinking that would be a sniper on the roof top, by the gutter, maybe….

….now I think it must have something to do with the gutter press media. Sneeking around waiting to ctatch a photo of a celeb with out them knowing……

or maybe a snipe that has evolved and moved into the cities leaving snipers in fields, making home in the gutters!! One clever bird if that is the answer

The verb to snipe originated in the 1770s among soldiers in British India with the idea of “to shoot from a hidden place”

  26. tayljim says: 72

    Another awesome five star performance

Snipe is also a term used for crew members
of naval vessels who work in the engineering
spaces, not sure why, maybe the good Captain
can inlighten us with his knowledge.

  29. BillyB says: 69

Bloodthirsty Guttersnipe is what Winston Churchill called Hitler when news came of the invasion of Russia (22/06/1941).
I used to have the whole speech & others on my harddrive. “Winny” warned, in advance, of Hitlers’ designs on domination of the nations, but found few to heed his warnings, until things got out of hand.

  30. Not the MBK says: 68

The origin of the word joke?

  31. I was curious as to the origin of Tattoo.
    Thank you!

  32. ectoplasm4 says: 66

A “guttersnipe” is someone, usually a child, that is homeless and wanders the streets.

It can also be someone of low morals and the lowest economic status.

  33. redhorse says: 65

2:33 snipe, snipe it takes one to call one, I am still waiting for your call.

  34. wyo550 says: 64

Gutter snipe is someone who shoots at you from the gutter- so you’ll fall into it (with them). Most of them are HANDICAPPED LESBIANS who wear PANTIES and live in PENTHOUSES and (new word origin) have COD PIECES! Dear Teacher, do those guttert snipe lesbians wear cod pieces because they like smelly fish and enjoy stuffing them down in their PANTIES? Dear Teacher, what’s the origin of “Cod Pieces”? I hear Russian underwear was made of HAIR in the 1970’s…something to do with licensing from DAVID BOWIE

  35. Warren says: 63

So, when somebody(usually in a movie) tells another person that they can take so-so and go hunt some snipe. They really mean “go hide somewhere out of sight” (get lost).
    Thanks Marina

  36. prospero811 says: 62

I come from a country of Slovakia however many people believe I am from Slovenia, and they confuse these two names often. Could you explain me why it is so that both these names are so similiar? Are they anyhow related? Please help me to solve the problem of all Slovaks and Slovenes!

    Sposibo.

“He who hesitates is a damned fool.” – Mae West 1892-1980………Judge not for as you judge so shall you be judged.

  43. Urchin…really interesting word…it doesn’t mean just a gutter snipe or a small mischievous child but even a hedgehog….we have to find the origin of the word urchin in the northern French word ”herichon”,from Latin ”heircius”=hedgehog  well,at this point it would be interesting to understand what a small mischievous child or a urchin has in common with a hedgehog….i’m trying to guess something…

  44. Bob says: 53

Guttersnipes were all the cool kids my mother wouldn’t let me play with.

    • Not me, I was on my own during playtime due to being a “middle child” with the oldest siblings always trying (and usually succeeding due to being bigger, faster, etc.) to ditch me and the youngest still in diapers. I soon learned to find my own amusements and make my own friends because my siblings weren’t all that interesting to hang with anyway. Then when I was 20, I heard on the news that one of my closest childhood buds from kindergarten through second grade had been convicted of murdering his dad, who was a professional car thief and stripped, painted, and rebuilt the cars in his garage. My friend had beaten his dad to death with an iron pipe.

      • Wow PT9! Its interesting how we learn later in life where these people are today. I had a drivers ed instructor that hated me. He called me an extremist, meaning I take things to the far left or right of view and never sit on the fence on anything. I really hated him for labeling me for that. He addressed me as such during class.  Well my sister hears news that he’s in prison for murder and a few other things. I love it when karma catch up to people like that.

      • In your case, all well and good. But this kid was my pal, and it seemed like such a shame that he ended up that way because of his dad’s influence. I never met his mom… wonder if she was around at all.

  45. Hello My Dear Teacher,

Once upon a time, it was said:
    “Men control the world,
    but women control the universe“.

What is the origin of the word universe and what does it have to do
with a single stanza of text? I am confused. :???:
My dear teacher must investigate this mysterious word.

Ten ♥♥♥♥♥ hearts ♥♥♥♥♥ for the Sniper video.

A gutter snipe is what feeds a gargoyle<—Fun GD language, is it not?

Also, I’ve known a few women who’ve seemed to make a hobby out of sniping at people–sometimes even me :!: Now, I wouldn’t call them snipers (though their aim is deadly & they lie in wait) I would call them snippy, or old-timers favorite: snippety.

Fun to learn where a words been, but sometimes don’t you wanna know where it’s going as well :?:

I notice something strange. Very strange. Like something you don’t see every day. I had to re-read the whole list of comments made on the Handicap post. And still I see it more and more. It happened 13 times. Not the normal two or three times but 13 times. I’m still trying to understand why this happened. I think its the coolest thing I’ve seen a very long time. I wish it would continue. One can only hope.
Humm I don’t know why I even brought up this observation. No one really cares, or do they?… Naw I guess not.
    Oh well…

Did the storm cause a split in your head, too?
What are you teasing us with? :???:

    • Warren says: 49.2

      ” ? ”
      What did you see?

    • No Bob, my head is not split yet. I did get a few cuts and bruisings. They are healing nicely. Im sure glad the body has its own repair system.

Ralph… hum.. sorry Capman. Im not sea sick, I just drank a bit to much grog.

Ok Warren, Its nothing really, but to me it was amazing. Marina posted 13 comments to her website. What nerve does she have to comment on her own site? What does she think that she just can comment as she feels? Who invited her to our discussion about her lessons?

Im just kidding! I was really impressed. It was almost orgasmic. Funny thing she works very hard on making videos (which are fantastic) but her comments on the site I feel more of a connection to her thoughts. It seems kind of backwards, I know. I guess Im a bit withdrawn from her videos because they look a bit like a commercial or a production. I guess I fear the talking head trying to sell me something I don’t need or want.Or maybe is that Im being talked at and not talked with. Communications should be a two way street. When it’s one way then communications start to break down. Then little wars break out. I know it’s impossible for Marina to respond to a billion comments and still do here day job. I wonder if there is a way?…
Yes there is always a way. But like many of those suggestions all but faded away in old blogs.

      • Warren says: 49.3.1

        captainjack,
I agree. It’s fun to “talk” to everybody here but it does seem that the reason we are here is all about Marina and yet our host is quiet most of the time. I often feel strange in regards to this but since Marina doesn’t mind I’ll continue. I’m new to this sort of thing and I don’t spend much time at any other site that resembles this one. At first all I ever did was watch the show and read a few comments and leave but after awhile the conversations became engaging and I couldn’t help myself so I decided to join in and have fun. Everybody here (most) is well mannered and good natured so that we seem to have an understanding of each other and are able to stay within courteous boundaries and yet are able to press the envelope to poke fun or entice further conversation. The qoute: “Familiarity breeds contempt” maybe one reason our mysterious Diva stays at arms length. There are many reasons that Marina must stay reserved besides time commitments and so it is always a pleasure when she decides to let us know that she’s keeping an eye on her “study hall”.

      • Bob says: 49.3.2

Maybe her tongue had been loosened by all the bevies she knocked back at Lisa’s party.

  49. Has recollected army, war in the Chechen Republic…

The LEAFLET-INSTRUCTION to the SNIPER the Sniper is the soldier specially selected, trained and prepared for independent initiative actions, neat the arrows, able skilfully to operate in fighting conditions. The problem of the sniper – destruction of the important and dangerous purposes appearing for short time,-is solved patience for a choice of an opportunity for certain to amaze them. Art of the sniper consists in independently to find the purpose, to estimate its importance and to amaze with one shot. The sniper is obliged not only to destroy alive force of the opponent, but also neat shooting to paralyse the organization by the enemy of current fighting work. For this purpose destroy its officers; arrange hourly hunting for its scouts, observers, signalmen, artillery корректировщиков; break their observant devices; ослепи the opponent; disaccustom it to go to full growth; force it to creep; do not allow it to be put out; spread panic among the bottom grades. A ultimate goal of the sniper – fear. Appear there where for you do not wait. Remember: the opponent should be afraid! The sniper is a hunter. The hunter is obliged to be invisible. Invulnerability of the sniper demoralizes the opponent. Your method – reserve. Your working tool – patience. Study to transfer famine, a cold, a pain, an immovability. Only it will allow you to destroy the opponent everywhere, even in depth of its defense. The opponent – an animal. Track down it and entice under a shot. The enemy is artful – be more artful than it. It is hardy – be more persistent than it. Your trade is an art. You can what others cannot. To you trust. For you – Russia. Be ruthless. You will win, because you are obliged to win!

    sorry for my english

    hello marina,
i am wondering about the word copacetic. love your vid show!!

  53. hellzzarmy says: 43

    HOW’S ABOUT THE WORD…ASSASSIN

  54. Another meaning of “hunting snipe” is a trick. You tell someone to go “hunt snipe” or “gather snipe” and they don’t exist (or well, I guess they don’t exist in the US, where the joke is wsa common in the 1920’s). so as this person has been told to go hunt snipe, he can’t find any (especially since he doenst’ know what they are) so he thinks he’ll get in trouble

For example, in the show “Carnivale” a guy tells Ben Hawkins to go “clean out the baggage trailer”. Then later the head of the Carnivale asks him where he’s been, and he says, “The baggage trailer? They sent you on a snipe hunt, there is no baggage trailer”

  55. roadrunrnch says: 41

Those hunters of snipe must have never tried hunting quail, Had they we would be talking about quailers.

  56. redhorse says: 39

Well Off to bed I go knight everyone

  57. tabowers215 says: 37

Prior to WWI, the term used to describe a good shot in the military was SHARPSHOOTER. Self expanitory title. At least that is true for American and British forces.
    Have a great day!

  58. Hey Marina!!

I sincerely hope that you are doing well. Every video that you post ends up teaching me something new and exciting, and I find myself logging in just to see if there’s a new video. Anyway, I want to request that you discuss the origin of the word “ludicrous”, since I use it so much in everyday conversation. Thanks for providing this awesome service, and I really hope that you continue posting even more facts for us to learn. Take care. Ciao!

What is the origin of the word “Haunted”? I too would like to know.

  62. Could you do a video on idiosyncrasy, idiocrasy and idiocy? I know the first two are the same, but not the third – I just want to know a little more about them.

  63. magnetoxm2 says: 31

Can you tell me where the word Afro came from

  64. Gutter snipe came from England. It was for street urchins, children who were poor.

  65. A guttersnipe, not gutter-snipe (no hyphen) is a person belonging to or characteristic of the lowest social group in a city or in lamens terms: a dreg of society, a street urchin.

  66. crazydoggy1 says: 28

What is the origin of the word “Haunted”?

  67. A snide sniper told me once that he was the evil twin of the pied piper. I didn’t laugh. Instead, I asked him if that was his best shot…

  68. Guttersnipe — a person who hides in the gutters and shoots birds.

I think that’s a person who is insulting and uses the basest sorts of verbiage to drag others down.

    Ever play Balderdash?

  69. 3215121 says: 25

  74. Why are websites that anyone can edit called Wiki’s?

Any why is Down Syndromes called Down Syndrome?

    • It’s Down’s Syndrome, which usually stuff is named after the person that first put together the list of symptoms. However, it might be interesting to find out exactly where it comes from, if it’s named that way, then who was “Down” .

  75. kaibanator says: 19

Great video marina  Loved the outfit too

When you first mentioned snipes, I thought of Wesley Snipes

I only just remembered this now, I don’t know if you remember me mentioning about the origin of ‘onomatopoeia’ (This was a while back though). Then you said that you were planning to make a video about it?

I’m not trying to sound rude or anything, I am just wondering whether you were still planning to make that video or not? If not that’s cool :)

Anyways, keep doing what you’re doing…because you’re doing great!!

  76. labbatt78 says: 18

It was first attested in 1824 in a term called “sharpshooter”

  77. very nice lesson…

thank goodness we weren’t required to go on a Snipe Hunt

calling someone a guttersnipe is an extreme insult…basically you are saying that person and his/her behavior, education, mannerisms, etc., come from the gutter, which, of course, is that part of the street that carries all the schista to the sewer…

so, y’all keep your minds outta the gutter!

  78. sniperskaya says: 16

I could have told you that Marina.
Interestingly, one of the deadliest snipers was Lyudmila Mikhailivna Pavlichenko, Людмила Михайловна, who is credited with 309 confirmed kills. In actuality she probably killed many more because in those days most kills were confirmed by collecting the dog tags from the target. Out of more than 2,000 women who were snipers in the Red Army in The Great Patriotic War (WW2), only about 500 survived. Pavlichenko achieved the rank of major before retiring and was the first Soviet citizen to be hosted at the White House in the USA. A very remarkable lady.
Remember that the female is always the more deadly of the species.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyudmila_Pavlichenko

Now for the homework, a “guttersnipe” is a person of the lowest order, a combination of a sniper (someone who is hated and feared) for not fighting an opponent face to face, and the gutter, the lowest level where sewage is disposed of.
Now how about the term “Ghillie suit”?

    • capman911 says: 16.1

As you can see, Ludmilla is right up there but not the top. Today the yardstick to measure snipers is quite different.

      • Well done maddog. For some reason I get the feeling I wouldn’t want to be on your bad side, from even 500yds out.

        Semper Fi, Pretty lady!

      • I’m reminded of the film, “Enemy at the Gates.”

      • I’m sure glad my name doesn’t appear on that list!

“Remember that the female is always the more deadly of the species.”

Yea your right. Especially when it comes to protecting their young, then watch out. I spared with a 12 year old girl in karate one time. She kicked my ass. She strive to get a point in 5 seconds or less. She was fast and very focused. She asked to be in the adult class, but the instructor said that was against the dojo rules. After she beat up most of the adults (in fun competition) the instructor decided to let her lead the class in warm up exercise. It was weird learning from a 12 year old, but I learned its your mind and not your physical age that matters the most. She was wicked smart. She invented her own language similar to we use pig Latin. She taught it to the whole class and soon we where confusing the heck out of the instructor. Great gal. She will go far in life.

I watched a show on the History Channel awhile back and it mentioned that there were many women snipers in the russian military.
      Very interesting.

    • Maddog, if you will check Zaitsev’s record, the 400 are an estimate, since not all his kills were confirmed. His verified kills were 242, 225 of those at the battle of Stalingrad.
Greenbush, Enemy At The Gates was entertaining, but not 100% historically accurate. It was an action adventure movie, not a documentary.
Maybe Marina knows if there is a Russian version of Zaitsev’s accomplishments? It would be interesting to see the Soviet take on the Great Patriotic War.

Teach, I think You have been had. Snip hunting is when you take a boob out in the woods ” snip hunting” with a bag. Tell him to wait till we flush out the snip on you bag it . They stand there” Holding the Bag” And you leave . Drive way, Go home. Big Joke on city boys.

I don’t remember hearing of Gutter Snipe but I sure use the words “Gutter Slut” when I get pissed-off enough.

  86. pagedoll says: 5

guttersnipe-a homeless vagabond and especially an out cast boy or girl in the streets of a city / a person of the lowest moral or economic station…as per Merrian-Webster. Possibly dating back as far as 1857 and belived to be a term coined on wall street for a “streetcorner broker”. Do I get an A?

  87. lehighguy says: 4

What is the origin of the word “eclair”? I know it’s the French word for lightning, but what does it have to do with the pastry?

  88. Ah, elementary my dear.
Gutter snipe can mean one of two things:
    1. A street bum, a hobo, usually a social outcast and commonly found in large cities.
    2. A person of very low moral, social standings, or financial situations.
However, if you’re looking for an origin, you’ll be hard-pressed to find one. A quick investigation gave me nothing, but I’m sure you would go a bit more in-depth than me,

    -Jimi

  89. Nice job, pagedoll. Now I have to be #2.
