ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE is a 69’s song by the Beatles. I think that the old devil Reagan tried to make love more financially based-like girls going back the marrying men for money. But in the 60’s my dad used to say THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE ARE FREE. He did have some good ideas once in awhile. but Matthew 24 describes cold loveless america well as living in the end times. BECAUSE OF WICKEDNESS THE LOVE OF MOST WILL GROW COLD!! We come to the3 end of america!

  2. Hi Marina,

but “to like” is “lubić” in polish – which has the same root as love

  6. kit-p says: 112

So, is there a chance that the short form of the Russian name Lubov’ which is Luba actually comes from Old German and wasn’t developed so by the Russians themseleves? Or it is just a coincidence?

    Spanish: amor
    French: amour
    Italian: amore
Welsh: cariad (n) or caru (v). This might seem to break the pattern, but it’s cognate with:
    Spanish: querida (beloved)
    French: cher (dear)
    Latin: carus (dear)

HotForWords tells us how universal “love” is as a word. “Love” is part of many phrases also. A word’s use in phrases can raise linguistic questions. Do the connotations of the words in the phrase apply to the phrase also? When words have multiple meanings, which meaning does the phrase depend upon?

“Words make love with one another.” (Andre Breton 1896-1966)

As HotForWords has instructed us, words can change meanings. “Make Love” is a phrase that gained a meaning and may have retained it’s original, at least in connotation. So this comment is a Word Request for “make love” and will get the investigation started with the thinnest of resources, i.e. PC and Internet with no special subscriptions or any other references. Referring to the Online Etymology Dictionary provides a start about this but doesn’t explain how or why it happened or precisely when it was gained and what was lost over the centuries.  The phrase “Make Love” is attested from 1580 in the sense “pay amorous attention to”. Presumably the act of paying attention could explain the “make” in “make love”, “make love to” or “make love with”.    Earlier uses of “love” in compound words include love-letter attested from about 1240 and love-song from about 1310. To fall in love is attested from 1423. All these are say “amorous” but by “paying attention” in words, music or emotion – no sex “action” yet.
The phrase “Make Love” as a euphemism for “have sex,” it is attested from about 1950. So about 1580 “make love” doesn’t mean “have sex”, yet. By 1950, it does.
After 1580 “love child”, a child born out of wedlock, was attested from 1805 which was from earlier “love brat”, attested in the 17th century. Clearly love meant sex with these, whatever word they were using for “sex” then and before. So not long after 1580, it appears that “love” was being used as an euphemism for “sex”.
“Words make love with one another.”

Regarding whatever word common English speakers were commonly using for sex then, before and after, if you wish refer to the Word History block and the Online Etymology Dictionary block in this link (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/fuck) for some history about the infamous F Word.

For 2 centuries or so sometime after 1580 “make love” appears to be used also as “flirt” can be used today, as “play at courtship” ( from the 18th century). Flirt originally had a quite different meaning, but that could be another word lesson. Consider these “make love” literary quotes.

“Astrologers say, This is a good Day, To make Love in May.” Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)
“It is true from early habit, one must make love mechanically as one swims; I was once very fond of both, but now as I never swim unless I tumble into the water, I don’t make love till almost obliged.” Lord Byron
    (1788-1824)
“The only way to behave to a woman is to make love to her, if she is pretty, and to someone else, if she is plain.” Oscar Wilde (1854-1900)

Meanwhile in literature for English speakers; no particular word or phrase, acceptable or otherwise, seems predominantly used for sexual intercourse and censorship applied to an incredible degree peaking in the Victorian Era.

In 1745 Benjamin Franklin wrote his Letter to Young Men on the Proper Choosing of a Mistress which includes the word and phrases: “Affair”, “Pleasure of corporal Enjoyment”, and “debauching a Virgin”.
In 1750 Fanny Hill, the famous pornographic novel, was published with it’s graphic descriptions.  Presumably looking at this novel with enough diligence (for this thin) etymological research, actual sexual intercourse is found stated as “engagements with men”, “the action”, “the transaction between this happy pair”, “the main attack”, “admittance”, “penetration”, “known any man”, “cheated the church of a ceremony” and “drove the nail up to the head”.
In 1826 a pope referred to “the arrangement of providence"
In 1880 Lady Jane Ellenborough, one of the most glamorous nymphomaniacs in history, is quoted "… slept with me …”
In 1900 “An American gynecologist said to a group of doctors … the sexual act …”.

While “Affair”, “liaison” and “sleep with” have continued to be used in the 20th century, English speakers began to rally around the long acceptable “make love” phrase with its new meaning. After 1950, or whenever, did “make love” lose it’s original meaning? Apparently largely so.  Try to find quotes from the movies in the last 20 years where “make love” doesn’t refer to copulation. OK, maybe that’s just Hollywood. Search the newspaper web sites and search the Internet literary quotes. Good luck.
Perhaps a better question would be has “make love” retained a connotation of enamor or being in love to any significant degree?  Some seem to have a broader view of “making love” than others.

“I think I mentioned … I could make love for eight hours. What I didn’t say was that this included four hours of begging and then dinner and a
    movie.” Sting

“A man is not where he lives, but where he loves”.
    Latin Proverb
“Whatever man loves, that is his God. For he carries it in his heart; he goes about with it night and day; he sleeps and wakes with it, be it what it may-wealth or self, pleasure or renown”.
    Martin Luther

If someone wants to ask me something they can contact me at shawnmnorris@hotmail.com, but other than that I’ll not badger you anymore with my endless ranting, and, of course, if anyone wants to be my friend you’re quite welcome – my myspace is http://www.myspace.com/shawnmnorris . Umm… perhaps a good way to look at this is to look at this as a growth experience, uncomfortable – but, not painful.
Sometimes the banter in here touches off nerves, chemical changes follow and sensibilities diminish. Hang out at an ER on a Friday night and you will be able to observe this (with more serious connotations).

  26. Hey Marina? micheldiego and I would like to know the origin of the words: Sheol (Hebrew) and Hades (Greek), we would like to know the etymology on it. We do know that it’s a place you can go after you die, but, according to the Bible you don’t have to go there if you’re what’s called “saved by grace” (God’s grace), although I didn’t quite know what Micheldiego meant by “incompatible with knowledge” – beyond knowledge or incomparable with knowledge – I don’t know what you meant and no I am not being ignorant I just don’t listen to man’s doctrine that much, just God’s and His Son Jesus Christ’s (which actually is the Father’s doctrine – John 7:16).

  32. ellis8353 says: 81

The word ‘love’ is the most overused and least understood in the dictionary. It’s
so similar in so many languages that it must be one of the most ancient human concepts, but what does it mean? We live for it, cry for it and even die for it, but can any of us define it? Poets and artists muse on it endlessly but none have ever pinned it down. It’s what makes us and breaks us, but we can never know it. On the other hand, lust is easily understood but almost taboo. This is a mystery that no philololololologist can explain. Or can you?

Here are a few phrase requests:

    Under the gun
    Jump the gun

    Behind the 8 ball

I heard all of these at work yesterday and thought that I’d really like to know the origins.

    • Hi xujof,

Under the gun= under pressure, stressed by a looming deadline, or somehow threatened.

Jump the gun= to start (a race, for example) before the starting signal has sounded.

Behind the 8-ball= derived from billiards game of “eight-ball,” where the 8-ball is supposed to be played only AFTER all the balls for the side have been sunk (1 thru 7, or 9 thru 15). Sinking the 8-ball before the balls are all in on either side results in a loss of the game by forfeit. Therefore, leaving the cueball “behind the 8-ball” at the end of one’s turn makes it very difficult for the opposing side to make a good shot because of the risk of prematurely sinking the 8-ball. It’s another way of saying “under pressure” similar to “under the gun.”

      I hope this helps.

Also, (besides Whitesmoke, dictionary.com and cocomment), what else could you point us to that would be beneficial to our accessing the meanings of words, grammar, and other languages, and that you use so we can get in on the goods as well, m’lady? hmm…. m’lady is that middle english? or ooooold and decrepit english? or maybe even borderline codger English? • I can obviously see that you’re calling God a liar and that you don’t have good grammar skills, the “City of Atlantis” has nothing to do with reality, and that you are really in desperate need for The Lord your God, whom you can’t even realize or see yet because you’re blinded by sin, the world, your flesh and your own selfish pride to see the things that God has in store for you – it’s clear to me.

      • I know the truth and the truth has set me free.

      • Augie, of course god does not exist. It only exist in the faith people put in it. Let just suppose that god has an actual existence, that you could somehow “test” him, then you will know instead of believe in god. The religions can only work by belief in something unknowable, or inexistent, and it is called faith.

      • micheldiego , there is a god and a devil you will probably meet both in your life time.

      • augie says: 39.1.5

that was only a question people i did not call god a liar ok im a retired US Navy Seal been to hell and back if you any combat war veterans you will understand me better and faith comes in all different understandings if god is so good and loving than why does he contiune to allow me great sufferin in this world when the govt of the USA i have stood by and fought for infected me with angent orange in the war in my case wheres the faith in lost!!!!!

      • redhorse, my point is that you can’t phisically meet god (or the devil) in person. Of course you speak metaphorically you suppose taht I could meet the idea of god, that is the belief of god. This is of course possible (even easy) to anyone. But if you actually meet “him” then it means the relationship you have with”him” is no more a relation of faith and believe (a religious sentiment) but a “normal” relation, with the knowledge there is no faith possible. My point is that by “knowing” god you “kill” faith, a religion where you could speak and see or have a physical experience of your god will not be a religion which is based on belief.
If you want to have some more clues anout what I’m speaking about try to figure out why “god” forbid to eat from the tree of knowledge, and why once man knows and sees god for what it is, he could no longer remain in Edenand has to move to a place where he can’t see him.
Then if you prefer the new testament you can also search for any follower of Jesus calling him god. You will notice that during the perios where Jesus was physically present noone called him “god”. The only citation you will find curiously is from the more sceptical of the apostles Thomas, but it is a mistake in the translation, as discussed by many specialist the current translation “you are my god” is one of the many possibles translations and is very unlikly.

      • Take a look at this: http://www.studylight.org/isb/bible.cgi?query=ps+139%3A8&section=1&it=kjv&oq=Ps%2520139%3A8&ot=bhs&nt=na&new=1&nb=ps&ng=139&ncc=139

I dare you both to 1. Read that scripture and to 2. Trust in Christ so you don’t have to go to the second place it talks about. It’s not funny, nor is it a figurative place.

God made hell and He created it not for men, but for the Lucifer and his angels because they rebelled against God. God was there before everything else existed, and I’m not making those words up – you can even find them here: (omnipotent)http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/omnipotent
        (omniscient)http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/omniscient
and (omnipresent) http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/omnipresent – I’m not makin’ this up, folks and don’t take it figuratively if you wanna fight take it up with my judge – God Himself (Jesus Christ, Yeshua Ha Meshiach) God is omnipresent, so I would say that if He weren’t to exist in one place He wouldn’t exist at all – so then God does exist in hell as well – no joke! By the way you said it’s impossible? All things are possible with God!! There is nothing too impossible for Him. http://www.studylight.org/isb/bible.cgi?query=bed+in+hell&section=1&it=kjv&ot=bhs&nt=na&Enter=Perform+Search I’m not kidding and God is not just some kind of figurative oh I thought of this concept and I’ll call it God – why for so many centuries have so many people debated over the existence of God? I’ll tell you why – because He’s real and if you would have the decency in your heart to call out to His Son Jesus Christ He would save you from eternal torment in hell. I’m not trying to put you down, I’m showing you that God has to punish sin and sinners, but if you receive His Son Jesus whom He sent us then you’ll have eternal paradise, not eternal damnation. I’m doing this to express God’s love in a comprehensible manner, not to condemn you only you can justify or condemn yourself – and either one by your own words: ( http://www.studylight.org/isb/bible.cgi?query=mt+12:37&it=nas&ot=bhs&nt=na&sr=1 ) you have a choice – to be justified before God in His way, or to be condemned in your own way – the wrong way (and by the way there is a right and there is a wrong and you can know the difference if you follow Christ for the rest of your life, forsake yourself, your life and take up the cross) All I’m saying is that there is a God in Heaven who sent His Son Jesus to die on a cross for us and if you would ask God sincerely from your heart to show you He’s real – He’ll do it!!! http://www.studylight.org/isb/bible.cgi?query=mt+21%3A21&section=2&it=nas&oq=mt%252012%3A37&ot=bhs&nt=na&new=1&nb=mt&ng=12&ncc=12 but you have to confess Jesus with your mouth and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead and you’ll be saved! http://www.studylight.org/isb/bible.cgi?query=Romans+10%3A9&section=2&it=nas&oq=mt%252021%3A21&ot=bhs&nt=na&new=1&nb=mt&ng=21&ncc=21 – it may have sounded harsh, but the real gospel is a very real thing, not something to be taken lightly. • Copy and paste those links if you can’t click them – I dare you.

      • Also when you die and see Him you’ll know exactly why all those things happened in your life, because you’ll see God and He will tell you, but if you don’t let Jesus be the Lord of your life (i.e. not you anymore) then it’ll be too late and you’ll have to suffer the consequences. I’m telling you before it is too late, and so you can escape these: the fire of hell, sin, misunderstanding and eternal damnation. So you don’t have to fight anymore and so we can all have peace with one another and love one another – isn’t that what so many people have been desiring, but haven’t had like say…..Israel? God’s own chosen people? Come on, people this is immature and misunderstanding – don’t mistunderstand what I’m saying – get understanding, not from me, however, from the Lord your God. Won’t you? Won’t you finally admit and actually take into account what He says instead of your hard-heartedness and your doubts? Please, do your duty as the creation and sumbit to the Creator – the Lord God Almighty – no one else. Serve God and keep His commandments (in the New Testament, because it actually is impossible to daily complete the old http://www.studylight.org/isb/bible.cgi?query=Galatians+3%3A13&section=2&it=kjv&oq=under%2520a%2520curse&ot=bhs&nt=na&new=1 ). Also, augie if you hold so much to the gov’t then watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FV7J1lwE5E4 – think again.

      • Pain and simple ( I meant to say this on this one) plain and simple.

      • I didn’t put those videos on Youtube – Marbus did.

      • Hey shawnmnorris I just read your first paragraf and noticed a huge mistake in the translation you are using of Psalm 139. I will read the rest of your post latter, will just coment Psalm 139. “if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.” is a wrong translation from the hebrew or greek. You can look for example in Collier’s encyclopedia that “She’ol” which is the original hebrew name of the place here refered as “hell” was a place where the dead were resting but without any caracterisation of “good” or “evil” place, and looks like the greek “hades” of most of the greek versions. It is definitivly not the hell, and translating it as hell is a huge mistake. Most of the translations of the bible use “seol” or “sh’ol” or abism or other-world, which is much more apropriate.
As you see I am speaking about words and their meaning. It was also the case when I wrote about faith and belief, but aparently you did not read it this way, or are not interested in undestanding the word and the concept of faith itself, please feel free to have a big breath and read me again, you will see that it does not say belief is wrong or good, it says it is incompatible with knowledge, which is something most of the religious thinkers will agree with.
Now about hades, scheol and hell it will be really interesting in looking to the etymology and history of these words and concepts. I guess that the transition between hades and hell is somewhere between the old and the new testament. The concept of judgement and hell are in fact pretty recent (the concept and the words, I’m here speaking about etymology).

      • BTW shawnmnorris you did not seem unloving at all to me. I hope you also will consider my discution as friendly, I really am interested in the meaning of words and concepts, even if this matter is the one most of people avoid to speak about, don’t see why it should be taboo.

      • I see what you’re saying, micheldiego, but your theory on faith is utterly incorrect Biblically. The reason in Hebrews 11:1 in the New Testament (koine Greek): Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. So what it’s saying (and it goes on to talk about it more exegetically afterward) is that faith is the assurance of the unseen or things you can’t see, but are there. Also I hope one day to become a Christian linguist and actually be able to read all of the words in both the Hebrew and the Greek of the Old and New Testaments without any help from man or man’s teaching, but God’s. Another by the by is that the Holy Spirit Himself is teaching me Japanese so I can minister spiritually to the lovely people of Japan – no joke. Sorry to burst your bubble about God not being real, but I didn’t even fully know until I asked Jesus to save me and the Holy Spirit to indwell in me and now I know for fact that He’s real. The mystery of speaking in other toungues as the Holy Spirit gives utterance (Acts 2:4) is made known to me and I just love it – to be honest Im havin’ a blast!!

Back to the etymology of Sheol and Hades: Marina, where did they originate, how do we after so many centuries still believe there’s an underworld or hell of some sort, and how do you say and spell them?

        -Shawn M. Norris

P.S. – micheldiego, I very much care about the philology and etymology of these words, because they (the words) are very vital and crucial in Bibliology and Theology (the study of the Bible and the study of God). I would like to know who or actually if someone came up with these words in the first place. Marina, you’re doing a great job of bearing with me and listening because I know you’re an extremely busy lady. – thank you!!! One more thing: INVESTIGATE!!!! :!:

      • One more thing and this is the last thing I’ll say for the night: let’s get together, you bring an actual Japanese person that knows how to speak the language, and I’ll prove that the Holy Spirit is real – by the translation of the tongue that I’m speaking (not interpretation, that’s part’s up to God). I lie not before our Father. I myself don’t fully know how to speak the language, but the Holy Spirit does and He could prove it to you by the tongue that I’m speaking – Japanese. Also God’s name is pronounced Ye-kho-vaw’ (notice the stress mark on the last syllable).

    • To all of you. Could we please refrain from discussion of religion in this blog before someone gets hurt?

Hey Jack I was wondering how much blue Shawn.. was going to initiate. He’s Young & fiesty & I’m not even going to read all the virtual ink on all this..

      • I agree that speaking of religion, or politics is “dangerous” nevertheless

        1) better doing it here than letting the teacher doing some religious or political conneted word on line. If Shawn want to know the origin of the word “god” perhaps better answering here in the comments than asking Marina to do the job.
        2) it’s dificult to get hurt online. I know that some may say that words are more dangerous than weapons, but it should be dificult on HFW
        3) The philological part in itself of Shawn request is interesting because it is linked to two of the most amazing quests, the seach of the name of god and the search of a mytological inicial unique language. Kind of graal of etymology

About the name(s) of god do you know Arthur C. Clarke short story? As I don’t want to bother anybody I think its all that I will post on this matter for now.

        http://www.geocities.com/rojodos/docs/9000000000.htm

      • @ Bill, I didn’t read any of his comments because I have heard it all before. Also I didn’t want this discussion to become a who’s religion is more correct or better than what other bloggers believes are.

@ Mich, Yes your right. The subject of Politics and Religion are very touchy subjects that are best left to blogs that are supporting that.
I think Shawn’s goal was not to learn the origin of the word ‘god’. From reading his comments I think he well aware of the origin.
I didn’t mean that someone could get physical hurt online. Thats impossible. To clarifiy what I meant is someone could be offended by others comments about discussions of religious beliefs.

    Hello all,

I just found this site a few weeks ago and I have to say I’ve been having a lot of fun just watching the videos and reading the comments. I finally decided to ask for an explanation of the word “Finial.”

One of my hobbies is doing Medieval recreation in the SCA and just last year I was able to purchase my first period pavilion and I am going to use some table legs I found for the finials. **got the idea from walking around Home Depot for a couple of hours… **

Anyway, I’m curious as to the origin of the word “Finial” and especially what was it’s original purpose? Was it merely for ornamentation or did it have a practical use, such as helping to keep rainwater from entering through the tent pole holes. My opinion is that it had some practical purpose although I’ve never been able to find any documentation to support that.

I look forward to your comments on the subject.

    Take care,

    Rick

  73. Hi Marina,
I have learned that the Polish are a caring and lovely people.

Miłość = Love (noun) “Miłość w moim sercu.” (Love in my heart.)
Kochać = to love (verb) “Kocham cię.” (I love you.)

For my Homework (as I rarely do them): As my Greek girlfriend would say; Agape, αγάπη. Meaning ‘Love’.
The Greeks have many different words for Love. In Ancient Greek language. It has three distinct words for love: Eros, Philia, and agape. However, it has been historically difficult to separate the meanings of these words.
    Eros means ‘Romantic Love’
Phillia means ‘Friendship’ in modern Greek
    Agape means ‘Love’
There is also Storge meaning ‘affection’ and Thelema meaning ‘Desire’.

As my Philippine girlfriend would say in Tagalog language, ‘Sinta’ meaning Love. If girl formally accepts the man’s love, they are boyfriend and girlfriend we get ‘magkasintahan’ I found when I was learning Tagalog that is was an easy and fun language to learn.

One thing I like with other languages that you don’t see with English is little over use of a word. Like the French have 7 different words with different meanings for the word love. In English you just can use the word ‘Love’ alone without putting it into a sentence to find out its meaning by the contents of that sentence. The rules of English are just plain ignorant.

(This paragraph is not directed to you. More so to the group)
So how can I be expected to use proper English when the system that develops it is flawed? As I said before who has the authority to make a rule how a word is spelled and how a sentence is structured?

    • Bob says: 32.1

I didn’t realise how alike Tagalog and Indonesian/Malay are, though it is logical that such close neighbours might have much in common.

As to your last question, Jack, it’s the Queen’s English, so, presumably she has the authority, although no-one I’ve ever heard speaks English like she does. Go figure.

      • Well then I wish she would take more authority over it. But I think we lost out on that deal when the US declared its independence. I guess we made the mess and we have to sit in it. Grrrrr.

Yea I liked learning Tagalog. Just now I have no reason to learn it. My Greek girlfriend said she would teach me Greek if we ever ended up living together. Post 9/11 Dept. Homeland security, the Republican party is killing that chance.

      • captain, ” Post 9/11 Dept. Homeland security, the Republican party is killing that chance. ” are just trolling, say something so silly that I can’t scroll by??? Is She a mad Greek Bomber, or apart of the Taliban?

      • I wish I could tell you what I know other that what you read in the newspapers. All I can say is the gates will be locked up soon as per request of the American people. The freedom we had to enter or leave the US is no longer. For example, You have to clear customs to go from one island to the next in the San Juan Islands. San Juan Islands is part of the US and is part of the state of Washington. You can go from island to island without leaving the country. But now you have to clear Customs and border protection to travel. Also as a pilot project they are scanning yachts in Seattle, Wa for background radio activity. A bunch of bananas can set off the detectors because of the potassium in them which is radio active.
immigration laws are stricter that they ever have been before. Well for some borders.

      • If we do not fix the borders You won’t need to learn Greek, But Spanish Mi amigo, Tu sabe?

    • You asked: As I said before who has the authority to make a rule how a word is spelled and how a sentence is structured?

Answer: God alone, whether you think so or not, God alone, we can make them up, but God alone has the actual authority over everything in all existence, because He is Omnipresent, Omniscient, and Omnipotent. Omni = all, present (in this case) = everywhere present, Omniscient = all-knowing (but in this case knows infinitely about every subject, because His understanding is infinite [Psalm 147:5 in the Bible] and last, but certainly not least He is Omnipotent = all-powerful or Almighty……..wouldn’t you say HE has the authority?

      - Shawn Norris (find me on youtube – chzitthacops and MySpace – /shawnmnorris)

      • shawnmnorris you can’t be at the same time omniscient and omnipotent. If you are omniscient you know in advance what you are going to do, so you can’t be omnipotent, you have no choice, you know what is going to happen, no potent at all. Anyway have you already thought about the concept of god beeing omni-something? Omnipresent? it means then for example that god is also in hell, a place usually defined by the abandon of god and the absolute evil, is in fact impossible. Omnipotent, it means that god if he wants can do something wrong. Can he? etc etc…. Try to figure out by yourself all the contradictions inherent to these absolutes by themself or together. And don’t run away from reflection using something like “the ways of god are….” instead of thinking.

    • forgot, LOVE; admire, adoration, adore, affection, agape, amor, caress, charity, cherish, dear, devotion, embrace, enamor, enthusiasm, fancy, feeling, flame, fondness, goodwill, idolize, infatuation, like, precious, romance, sweetheart, valentine etc.

    • BillyB says: 32.4

1960 CS Lewis wrote The Four Loves to try & explain the inadequicies of the one word for love, a respected piece of literature in & outside of christian communities. Ulysses by James Joyce has an interesting take on “Four Loves, No loves”.
I’m still out on whether swahili has a word for Love or at least a deeper word than “like a lot” or “affection”. also lacking is a word for depression, as in the mental (medical) condition. No “Bored”.
The Japanese, I discovered have lots of words for love, but culture dictates not using the term for “romantic Love” in public, although that seems to be changing.

    • Anyone want the true reason we have Love? No? Ok I’m going to tell you anyways. Love is the effect of a chemical reaction in our brains. I love my Dopamine! I have some excess Prolactin if any small breasted woman wants it? The less I have the more women want me.

You know this brings up an interesting question I had with a new friend I made in the game ‘Second Life’. Why is it below average intelligent people have more babies than people with above average intelligence? This seems to go against the survival of the fittest theory.

      • I have a few theories on that question but so sure I should present them here. I would like to know more about second life though. I came across it one day and found it rather interesting…p s I sent you a lil something on the wop lesson.

      • Hey PD, Yea I would like to hear them. We seem to pay attention to Marina’s lessons for a spell then we end up discussing other things. I have not heard Marina or other say otherwise. I guess if we stay way from politics and religion we are ok.

PD do you have my email addy? If not just go to my website http://captainjack.ws and fill out the contact page. I’ll email you back with my addy.

People call ‘Second Life’ a game which it kind of is right now because its sort of a beta version now. But many companies are using it for true business uses. For example many LEGO employees use it to design new toys or programs for toys in the VR (Virtual Reality) world of SL and then copy the code directly to the toy for production. I myself plan to start a school there for people who want to get a captains license or learn how to operate a boat.
You can meet lots of people and do all kind of people things. Yes even sex. You would be a mazed of what people think up. And the last count I found for the ratio of women to men was 3 to 1. Guys don’t like the world of SL because there is very little shooting and blowing things up. You will find this to be true because of the numerous number of stores catered to women’s clothing and very little for men. I had to visit a store for gay guys to find and good clothing.
I really think that this VR thing is the replacement of webpages or Web 2.0 as we know it. VR is the new internet.
If you download the program and make though the instructions let me know and I’ll come visit you ‘In world’ and give you a tour. Please be prepared to be blown away in amazement. I sure was.
I’ll offer this invitation to anyone who is new to SL and would like to have someone they can trust to give them correct information. Just like any back ally in the real world there are some not so good people. Just remember its only VR and your not going to die.
PD email me if you have more questions about SL. I heard Marina has downloaded the program but has not said a second word about it.

      • Captain Jack Obvious in the World of Yesterday ; You are getting a little simplistic? What is not a chemical reaction? If we must go to Microbiology, but I would rather stay in the Macro Ok? As for why do stupid people breed like rabbits……….Because any Idiot can get pregnant . And the smarter you are the less likely you are to get pregnant, accidentally.

      • RR, The reason I’m a bit simplistic is because people tend to loses interest or get angry at me when I go over their heads. Sometime I ask the question why the sky is blue? I find many people don’ t know this basic knowledge. Obviously your not one of those people. I was just trying to find a foundation for the words you described to work from. Sorry if I insulted your intelligence. I’ve been surrounded by stupid people lately.
The English language is nearly completely foreign to me. Words are just symbols of a common interpretation. I prefer images of complete thoughts (a form of mental telepathy) to communicate. As I alway preach here. I hate English.
So the human race is doom to be over run with stupid people? Or is this a good reason why I don’t have my Jet Pack today?

      • YES, WE ARE ON THE SAME PAGE.. I seem to spend a lot of time interpreting my rants. I’ll try to remember, low and slow. Like a good BBQ

    • Hey captainjack, I just wanted to say that your Greek girlfriend is right about these words :D

Έρως or Έρωτας (in modern Greek) meaning Romance, Romantic Love and it’s pronounced like Eros / Erotas as you mentioned above.

Αγάπη is for Love and it’s pronounced like Agape.

Φιλία meaning friendship is pronounced like Philia and in ancient times also meant Love. An example of a word that contains the word Φιλία would be Παιδοφιλία, which contains the two words Παιδί for child and Φιλία for Love and it means Pedophilia.

Στοργή meaning affection is sort of pronounced like Storge, but I suppose most of the people who read this would pronounce it like Forge. The letter ‘γ’ (gamma) is pronounced a bit differently like g. I’m afraid you will have to hear it from me to learn it :P

Finally, the word Θέλημα (pronounced like Thelema) does not really mean Desire. It mainly means to want something rather than desire. In other words, I would not use the word Θέλημα if I wanted to say Desire in Greek. I would probably use the word Επιθυμία pronounced like Epethemia meaning Desire or wishing to have something, but I would prefer the word Πόθος pronounced like Pothos meaning Desire or wanting something really badly.

And btw, I dont want to brag and please dont get me wrong :P , if you look at many of these comments there are loads of word requests in which the words arrive from Greek. For example the word Etymology (Ετυμολογία) comes from 2 Greek words: Έτυμος meaning initial origin of a word and the word Λόγος for word, so it means to find the initial origin of a word.

      Hey Cap’n,
      good points on your post.
I find (not knowing all the rules myself
in English) that it seems limited only
by it’s usage and or user. Compared
to other languages wheres a great amount
of inferrence is required as situational
      requiates infer. Less clarity,
bad poetry. Like anything I think it’s
      how one does it.

Procreation is the base or primal urge.
Maybe that is why more or less educated
peoples procreate more than less. I have
planned to have no children. I mentor for
      many so I have many.

The US govt. pays welfare people to have
more childrens. I bet many of them don’t have
any or many books in the home. Mom was a school
teacher and she would speak on the difference
between children depending on what kind of
family environment the child sourced from.

      Teach your children well. CSN&Y

Here’s a request for more than a word or phrase. You mentioned the Indo-European origins of the word “love.” I would like to hear more about Indo-European roots and other words that contain them.

Can you find the etymology of linguistics and the word etymology itself?

  82. Very Interesting. Love is Ást in Icelandic and Ai in Japanese ^^
Me and my family had this long talk about the origin of the word hummus (I’m not 100% sure I’m spelling that correctly) but none of us had any idea what it is so I thought maybe you would know, or be able to find out =)

Hey Marina! I asked this in a previous video but I’m still curious. I have been hearing so many theories and I want to know the correct one.

what is the origin of the word Cesarean?

  84. okay4now says: 25

 I thought LOVE came from just really-really liking

    somebody :!:

    • do you really liKE your Mom And Dad?

      • Umm…jeez, don’t quite know where your going with that one but maybe you ought to go there by yourself…

      • You can’t love your car like you love your girlfriend. OR can you?

      • right captain, Is love the exstreme of like ?? My point , You need not like someone to love them. And you need not like them to respect them. But to love someone you don’t respect is hard ….or can you?

      • @ RR,
This is a good example where the poor use of the English language breaks down and cause confusion. In your context your using the word ‘Like’ and ‘Love’ as a form of measurement. My guess is that your the only one who knows when to switch from Like to Love. Then the other context you mention you not need to like someone but are able to love them. So are we connecting the word ‘Like’ with measurement of one feelings for someone and measurement of someones personality maybe? There are many people I really don’t like but I do respect them for what they do. So I see that the two words are used as a form of measurement of something.
To love someone you do not respect might be because your addicted to the drug dopamine and occurs naturally in our brains. We want the feels that love gives us but we no longer respect the person we are in love with. I think respect is not an emotional feeling and love is. Being in love is linked to a chemical reaction and respect is linked to mental thought.

Did I make any sense? If not maybe someone else here could better elaborate than I did. RR thanks for asking that question. I have not put that much thought into those words before. It was interesting.

        __/)___

      • Measurement? Of …. How. I think you are mixing Love with Lust,
When a Man tells the Teach, I Love You, Does he in fact love her or does he lust for her? I think the later. But he was told as a child this feeling is love, And you need to have her, Love Her.

The word “LOVE” is a catch all. Like extreme, If everything is extreme, then nothing is extreme. I Love Sunsets?? Do you…Love Sunsets or do you like them. Mostly… I think some
are in Love with being in Love and the other person just gets in the way.

All thought is emotion, Maybe not emotional. So to put it in a thought, Love without respect is lust.

      • ps. When I refer to a Man, I am referring to the Men in these posts.

I dare not impune Her Love life.

      • Roadrunrnch,

No I see Lust as a different word as with a physical attraction.
I too am bothered when someone just says I love you to someone they hardly know. I don’t say ‘I love you’ until I really do have some feelings for the person. I think some boys are using the word love when they should be saying ‘I lust for you’. But then I would get mad at someone saying that.
Your right RR that the word ‘Love’ has become a catch all. Thats what makes English difficult for me. Like in math 2+2=4 and always will equal four. You can’t changes its meaning without breaking mathematical rules. You just can’t say 2+2=16 for today. No! Can not do that. Period.
I don’t agree that “All thought is emotion”. I think they are seperate as I understand it.
“Love without respect is lust.” Hum yea I can see that. Which reminds me of a common statement women would say to me before sex. “Will you respect me in the morning?” Now maybe I should be asking the same question.

      • The thing is a little too personal actually when you ask if I “like” my Mom & Dad, too much history & too many vignettes & too many stages in the relationship for a first person answer, besides I’d have to use past tense for one of them. I know some people are removed enough to type away to a bunch of strangers–guess I’m not.

Besides, really I was originally being facetious and think the exercise between love and ‘like’ or anything else is great–Teacher knew this would happen…

    • I know some people are removed enough to type away to a bunch of strangers–guess I’m not.????????????? This from a guy typing to a Woman He does not know?? But I was only giving you a scenario where you could see Love with out liking someone. Not trying to get in to your history. OK 4 now ?

      • Yeah you can read…listen poncho, just a little tip: why don’t you ask: can “one” love their parents and not like them? Of course “one” can, and your question suggests personal information about your relationship with your parents, and believe me I don’t want  to know.  Can parents love their children and not like, them?  Interesting question following what you brought-up & I like the logic and discussion & your thought pattern.

As far as typing to strangers it just sometimes crosses a line I guess, this time it did.  There are things that I would never say, request, type convey to Marina, or anyone in such a public forum–don’t want to know & definitely won’t ask.

Yeah, ’some are removed enough’ I’m not, buddy.  That means in this forum there are things off topic.  If you were a friend of mine I’d buy you many rounds of drinks & tell you exactly what I think (have thought) about my parents if it took six hours great have a shot. have ten.  But you asked if I ‘like’ my parents and you just don’t have any idea.

Want to start a philosophical discussion, great!  But you asked if I ‘like’ my parents & you just don’t have any idea:  ok short answer weighing all percentages & balancing all the years–yelp.

      • WOw , You are wound tight. Take a breath .. Mejor? Let me break it down …….OK? “Do you” as in ( can you see where someone can ) ” like your” as in ( as a teenager thinks his parents are evil , because your make him clean his room ) MOM & DAD ( as in your Parents) .
And then I let you come to the irony on your own of ,, ” Yes, I did love my Parents even when they made me mad and I did not like them.”

Man ……I had no idea I was creating a shit storm about your personal life.. When I was talking Philosophly .. I was not being personal. I was talking hypothetically. Now ….Isn’t that alot about nothing…..Mi llamo no es Poncho

  86. First love in my native language(slovenian) is called “ljubezen”, verb is “ljubiti”…our southern neighbours use word “ljubav”, which is pronounced almost the same as in russian(according to hotforwords above), but like russian are slovenian and croatian language came out of Slavonic

second, I wonder if that dog knows how fortunate he is? well…

    best regards
Her Majesty Officer Lord William Tavington

    • in Slovak it´s Láska, and so it is in Czech. Actually I have requested the origin of the names of our countries: Slovakia and Slovenia wondering why people keep confusing it. But in fact, i used to confuse Latvia and Lithuania as well.

      • Why do people keep confusing it? OK that’s easy…First Country names are different by one letter. Second flags are almost the same, again difference appears only in coat-of-arms; you have some kind double cross(St. Cyril and St. Methodius legacy I think :) ) and we have 3 things in our coat-of-arms:our highest mountain(Triglav), 3 stars(reffers to counts of Celje) and wavy lines(lakes and sea). Furthermore in our native language we address ourselfs as “slovenci” or with adjective “slovensko(i)” as you also(for this i’m not sure, could be wrong though)

About Slovenia and Slovakia …they surely derive from Slavonia(we use just name for nation-”Slovani”-english “Slavs”)

If we look back in history, (present-day) Slovaks, Czech(Bohemian???) and Slovenes together as one group left area of Dnjeper and Dniester(Ukraine, present-day) and went towards west.

I think that Love is a very misunderstood word. Love should be and is Respect, And has nothing to do with Sex at all. You can have Sex with anything. You can buy Sex, You can not buy Love. It is true that only Fools fall in Love. Fall? More like fail in Love. Love / Hate are the same, ok let me ………They are both extreme emotions. If You do not care about a person, will you / could you Kill them?

    what about the word CRAP?

  93. Dear Marina, I have a word request to make and that word is ‘kidnap’.
I believe it might prove to be rather interesting as it contains the words ‘kid’ and ‘nap’. My lucky guess is that at some period of time, kids were snatched when they were taking a nap and so the word ‘kidnap’ was created. Is that true?

And by the way, as for the homework on this video :D

‘σε αγαπάω’ (often written like ‘σ’αγαπώ’) pronounced like ’se agapo’ (or ’s’agapo’) is ‘I love you’ in Greek and ‘σε λατρεύω’ pronounced like ’se latrevo’ is for ‘I adore you’. Moreover, the word ‘αγάπη’ is the Greek word for ‘love’ and it’s pronounced like ‘agape’.

Σε λατρεύω Μαρίνα (that means Marina btw :P )

  94. yeah i was in a tennis team and i always wondered why love meant 0…now i know and i was mentioned wooooow….lol…but i was wondering the origin of “commando” or ” commander” because why would you say ” i am going commando” ..meaning i am going out without underwear…..what those a commando have to do with underwear…lol

  95. Hi Marina,

  96. Dear Teacher,

Recently discovered you on YouTube, and have enjoyed your lessons tremendously… as much for the content as the presentation.

I run a guitar community website, where we get into some rather deep discussions on anything related to our instrument. I’m hoping you’ll take on the origins of the word, “guitar”, and enlighten us with your usual panache and inimitable style. We thank you!

Jeff the music was just beautiful. Is all of it just music or is there any singing in there also?

    • Bob says: 11.2

I agree with Capman911; the guitar is one of my favourite musical instruments which I wish I had enough talent to play. I’ve listened to a lot of guitar players and never been so impressed as when I heard Paco de Lucia.

      • Hi, Bob.

I think some copy editing is necessary in your comment. Let’s get the word “talent” out of there and replace it with “practice time” instead. Now I’ll admit that some seem to have more natural aptitude for certain things than other people do, but 1.) the sensibilities we develop from contact with others as tiny humans growing up into children and then into adults and 2.) the passion we bring, the committment we apply, and the sheer amount of time we spend practicing becomes what others will eventually see as “talent.” That’s my view looking back on 40+ years of guitar playing. But you have to start developing that area of the brain well before age 15 or so for it to work best. After puberty, ‘other things’ start to predominate the mental processes. It all changes.

If you enjoy Paco, you might check out Al DiMeola (one of his students, I believe) who used to accompany Chick Corea’s Return To Forever band. Also, investigate a flamenco duo called Strunz and Farah. They are truly incredible. First time I heard them I was convinced it was Paco deLucia and Al DiMeola trying to one-up each other. Fasten your seat belt, though.

      • Bob says: 11.2.2

Penny, you’re probably right about practise time, but whenever I would start to practise, someone would tell/ask me to do something else, so you also need support from your family and mates.
My challenge is that I can’t move my fingers fast enough.
Wow, think of the tunes you could play on your girlfriend if you could play guitar like Paco.
