that short black dress, those high heels and that AK-47 look cute together. the american M-16 rifle was made by Mattel toys before. and it has a plastic stock and the grip in front. That must mean the people who made barbie dolls make the M-16 rifle unless that changed. I want an AK-47 of my own too! Let’s have a Russian Revolution right here in America!!

    I know a few good guns…
MP5, a popular S.A.S. gun made by Heckler and Koch
RPG is a truly remarkable weapon, a terrorist weapon too, it is in GTA IV…
What about a Glock, cheapest weapon to buy and is in GTA IV.
A Desert Eagle? A .50cal pistol. Strongest of all pistols!
Also the awesome… high velocity weapon, the M4 Carbine!

  6. My personal favorite lesson and now an owner of this rifle.
I also got a hold of an AR-15.

AK-47 is a great rifle in most games and it’s my favourite weapon in GTA IV  . By the way, what’s the origin of the word [infantry] ?

  8. karlzona says: 134

Lovely Marina, you forgot to mention the AK-47 was also coppied from a German design, just like synthetic motor oil, the US Mercury space rockets and so many other advanced inventions we still use today.

I watched the Russian version and enjoyed every second of it. It was a proof for me that Marina is a genuine Russian woman.
Maybe it is not true, but I hear a little English accent in her speech. But this is same sweet like her Russian accent when speeking English.

(I do speak Russian njemnozhetchka — a little.)

  24. Dear teacher,
The french army created the “Famas” a good weapon, not as famous as the AK 47 but as reliable. We also have a terrible weapon, it is called “le sourire” it doesn’t need ammunition and it has amazing effects!
Thank you for the lesson, (the russian version is pretty funny)
    Amicalement,
    Don Felipe Gonzales

  25. Given the amount of interest in firearms exhibited in this thread, I am surprised no one noticed that the ammunition shown in the video is not for an AK-47. Even without seeing the headstamp, I am pretty sure it is 7.62 x 25mm, probably for a Tokarev pistol. I recognized the shape of the cartridges because I used to have a Chinese “Tokarev” copy in that caliber. See:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7.62×25mm

I could see how one might think a picture of Soviet 7.62mm ammunition would be for the AK-47 since it seems to have the correct designation. However, the AK ammo is 7.62 x 39mm, which looks quite a lot different when you compare the two cartridges side by side. These is just such a photo on the Wikipedia page for the AK round:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7.62×39mm

Of course, this has no bearing on the etymology of the AK-47 designation. Just an interesting aside.

    • tedt says: 115.1

Hm, I think a 7.62 x 39mm round is the most common round for any kind of Assault Rifle or other type, the old G36 also use the same rounds, the Rifle that German soldiers use nowadays holds the same rounds….

Pistol rounds are shorter, and I on´t want to stomp on our trusty teacher when she don´t know what rounds a gun holds  .

It truly is the etymology we watch out for.

  26. tedt says: 114

The only thing I know about this gun is that a classmate his Mother can handle it from the smallest part up to the biggest.
In the time of the Cold-war, they learned all kind of things in school, he told me. (hey, this grammer thingie realy helps  )

  27. graffspee says: 113

I have to say that as the Ak-47 is one of the first real Assault Rifles it was not the first. The first “True” Assault Rifle was the German Stg-44 also known as the MP-44. If you compare the Stg-44 to the AK-47 they look almost Identical and it is my opinion that the AK-47’s design is a direct offshoot from the Stg-44. Though that has been denied for years and there are differences in both designs the similarities in appearance are to much to ignore.

    Just my thoughts……CHEERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  28. Russian words that have found their way into English? Vodka….Sputnik….Tsar…..Samovar…..Gulag…..Borscht…..Oligarch…..

  29. In response to HFW latest poll. Weapon of choice. Well truthfully, I use words first. If I can talk my way out of a fight then I have used good karate. I don’t want to fill out the police report on why I killed the guy. It just wastes my time. Surprisingly I have had to talk my way out of two possible fights last month. One was some kid showing off to his friends and the other was a drunk guy that just wanted to kick someones ass. Neither of them knew that they where messing with the wrong guy. I sometimes wish I had a little sign that said, ‘I’m and expert in karate and I know how to kill people. Your lucky that I showed you this sign or you would be dead right now. So don’t fuck with me.’

Here is our creed we verbalized before the start of karate class:
“I come to you with only “KARATE” – empty hands. I have no weapons, but should I be forced to defend myself, my principles or my honor; should it be a matter of life or death, of right or wrong; then here are my weapons – “KARATE” – my empty hands.’”

It’s amazing what the human hand is capable of doing. Im able to break as set of 4 boards in one strike. I can break patio bricks and working on learning how to break river rocks. I should make a videos of this someday. Whats really interesting is I can teach just about anyone how to brake a board in about 5 to 10 minutes. Kids are the easies. They don’t yet know that they can’t do it. Its a great tool to teach people self empowerment. I know of many women that not longer walk down the street in fear of being attacked and not knowing what to do. Funny thing, I now fear women that know karate. I usually loose on those fights and its not from holding back either.

    • Oh I forgot one more thing. My Bare Hands are also good for another thing. On a women’s shoulders. My massages are beyond belief. I think I could get a woman to marry me just for that fact alone. I’ve gotten a few wonderful kisses from that already. Guys! You should try this on your wife or girl friend. Don’t rub the skin, but work the muscles under the skin. Need to be firm and yet gentle. Who knows what your night might end up like.

We are such nerds. Do we have nothing better to do than have “conversations” with people we will never meet face to face? Everyone, including me, thinks they’re so Goddamn smart, too. It’s ironic that the people who think they’re the smartest have the worst spelling.

What I really hate are the perverted, child molester types who probably pleasure themselves while watching the videos. Those people don’t have any respect for Marina or appreciation for word origins.

I have better things to do than argue with anonymous people over the internet. This is my final post. I quit this bitch.

    • okay4now says: 108.1

Hummmm HotForNerds  , even assho&*# have good ideas. Wonder who he’s going to go argue with now…sure wish I knew him personally. My loss.

    • Maybe when she puts the book and DVD’s on the market, she’ll
have tours and signings. Seems far from “bitch” and ok if I’m wrong.
      Look up!
      NERD….??? …. inconsequential.

    • levocombi, Conversations with people you have never met face to face? Why is that such a difficult concept for you to grasp? People have been doing this for years. I used to talk to many people over Amateur Radio that I never met face to face. Even send Morse code to them. I yet to meet those people. One interesting thing is I have met people that I have chatted over the Internet with.

We are not hear to see who is the smartest. Its not a pissing contest. Spelling is little indication of intelligence. I have taken many IQ test and no questions asked me if I could spell very well. Take a look at Albert Einstein. Albert did very poorly in Greek and Latin, perhaps not even finishing high school because of that. He even got an F, in “Physical Experiments for Beginners.” So even the worlds best have their flaws.

I agree I can’t stand the weird people on the net that don’t respect Marina’s teachings. But so be it. They exist and we just have to deal with it.

Sorry you feel this way about us here. Hope you can find something that makes you happy.

  32. that was a 5 lips video for sure

  33. muggins says: 106

I like Hackworth, but I don’t agree that the AK-47 is the weapon of choice, not for developed nations. It is the weapon of choice for the emerging nations, esp. the ones without resources enough to pay for a better sidearm. Not to say i don’t respect the AK-47. It’s cheap and reliable. That fulfills 2 of the many criteria for a military sidearm. Other criteria for a military sidearm is weight of the weapon, weight of the ammo, accuracy, lethality (is that a word?) of the projectile, range, ease of maintenance and others. Just what the ranking is of these criteria are… would depend on the circumstances, which vary quite radically. I’ve shot both the M-16 and the AK-47, and I would chose the M-16, easily over the AK. I’m a civilian and I have no use for assault weaponry. But, if somebody decided to purchase an
AK-47, like my shooting buddy did, be sure to fork out a little extra money for an AK made in Russia.

  34. UUUhhhggg  I forgot to mention Marina. I love that black outfit your wearing. All those words on it. Its so you! I noticed you have a few outfits with words on them. How many outfits do you own that have words printed on them?

    • But diamonds are a girls best friend.

    • BillyB says: 105.2

I didn’t want to mention it either Jack as Marina may tire of hearing “you Hott” & such, but this black top, on her, with the great lighting says volumes about her. What can I say… ahh, no words good enough.

      • I even have tired hearing guys say she’s hot. I just had to comment on her outfit today because its uniqueness. An outfit with words on it is just fitting. With all the clothes she has, bet she lives in a two bedroom apartment, with one room dedicated to her clothes.

As for words not good enough. Hummm I think there is. Im having a difficult time finding the best combination. Maybe photographs are one way. The old saying is a picture is worth 1,000 words. Or maybe poetry. Or maybe actions speak louder than words. humm food for thought.

  35. batszymon says: 104

RPG 7, Colt M4A1, Sniper Rifle PSG-1, Desert Eagle, Pump Shotgun- thats mine favourites weapons of GTA 4

  36. Here is the bad points about the AK-47

    1. Its inaccurate and only good for close hand combat. You would be lucky to hit a barn door from 20 metres away.

    2. Its simple and cheap design (it only costs 50p / $1 to make) is built for someone with the intelligence of a 10 year old to be able to give it a field strip.

    3. Its primitive. Where the American Armalite M16 or British made Enfield SA80 will hit its human target and the round will pass cleanly through him, the AK-47 rips human flesh with it. I seen it in Africa, 1 guy getting blasted with an AK-47 and big lumps of meat flying off him. As those Irish do say, “to be sure, to be sure.”

  39. jmcargal says: 100

You keep saying that the AK-47 is one of the most used assault weapons in the world. It is far and away the most used assault rifle. vc-companybuilder comments that John Browning, undoubtedly the greatest gun designer ever, designed many great weapons. However, the one that has the greatest cachet is the Colt 45 which is often referred to as the 1911 after its first year manufacture (or design, I am not sure which). Similarly the AK-47 is often referred to as the Kalishnikov. I would pick the Colt 45 as the combat gun closest to the AK-47 in veneration. Like the AK-47 it has a simple design and is rugged.

mini-Uzi, carbine rifle, combat sniper, pump shotgun, ak 47, molotov cocktail…just my faves from gta 4. So, where does the word “genuine” come from? thanks for a great show -love fellow etymologist, jess

  41. Marina,
I forgot to respond last week to your “in” versus “on” comments. Very insightful. You pointed out “in” implies a confined area while “on” had a more undefined and open sense.

Your distinction reminded me of an old George Carlin stand-up routine about flying. When the flight attendant announced that passengers could get on the plane, George objected and said, “I’m not getting ON the plane. I’m getting IN the plane”. Whamm … George caught them red-handed in a marketing slight-of-hand trying to defocus passengers from the confined, claustrophobic nature of an airplane. God bless George! He shined a humorous light on a lot of human foibles, fears and contradictions.

    XOXOXO

  42. trehcurb says: 97

I was wondering if you could find the origin of the phrase “how come?” because I often say it then realize it doesn’t make sense! :???:

    • So how did you come to this realization?

      • I often say things over and over in my mind til they make absolutely no sense at all and where phrases come from like instead of saying “I am thanking you,” we say “thank you,” as if it is a foreigner trying to speak English. I totally sound like an idiot now but that’s how I put it, hah.

    • trehcurb,

Excellent point. I also find that continual repetition of any word or phrase usually brings on this feeling of senselessness eventually. Imagine what it’s like to have to repeat the exact same phrase several thousand or so times a day, every workday, like a receptionist in a busy office or a cashier in a chain supermarket has to do. Many a time, I’ve heard such a person repeat the same phrase again during the same transaction because it comes so automatically that they will forget whether they said it in the first place.

To really confuse yourself, try this technique with your given name. You can become formless, an abstraction lacking identity, over time.

But that wasn’t the point of my initial comment.

Okay, I’ll rephrase: “HOW did you COME to this realization?” I was attempting to offer a possible origin source for the phrase, but failed to make myself very clear. Expression using a keyboard instead of vocalization can also lose its meaning because we sacrifice vocal inflection and facial expression… My bad.

  43. Super overview on the AK-47. Thanks!

The American gun-design genius was John Browning who invented many of the important and reliable handguns, rifles and shotguns of the late 19th and early 20th century. HIs portfolio included the Browning .50 caliber machine gun, Auto 5 shotgun, High Power pistol and many more from his 128 patents. Many of his guns and patents are still in use. Like the AK-47 reliable designs are always in fashion.

    XOXOXO

  52. Marina,
Spanish articles…such as “el” toro, “la” servilleta…how did these come to be?
“La luz” is “the lights” in Spanish. Could this be because during the days when the Spanish language was first concieved, it was the woman WHO LIT THE CANDLES AT THE DINNER TABLE?
“La plata”…money (well, I think I know why money might have been considered feminine…lol); it also seems obvious why the Spanish word for “milk” is “la leche”, with the feminine article   . But why does the Spanish word for “sugar”, carry the MALE article (”el azucar?”) Is it because there were primarily men who worked in the sugar cane fields back in the day?
Thanks, Marina  …great web presence!

I’ve heard of a new assault weapon made by Israel that is relyable and short in length. It does not heat up the way m-16s do when fired repetitiously. so no “cook off” of a round chambered. I can’t remember the name but I saw it on futurewapons or the military channel on cable tv. There are some great shows out there on this stuff. When I was a soldier my M-16 didn’t shoot that straight but I didn’t have time to tell just what the problem was. I’m sure some of them are sighted well. Mine was old and beat up by many before me.

what is the origin of “get a leg up on the competition”?

  80. flyingm@n says: 57

The M16 is the best gun ever
Or the P90, Gun from my country, made in Belgium

    • capman911 says: 57.1

So the P90 is made in Belgium. Very nice weapon.

    • My only experience with the M16 was in Air Force Basic Training and it jammed on me every other shot. It might be because it was FUBAR from being used by so many other trainees so I couldn’t tell you if it was the best when in better condition.

The AK-47 does seem to be more common in most places around the world but that might be because it’s easier to get. Maybe the M16 is more expensive and more valuable.

      • The first M16s did jam alot. Especially if you didn’t keep them clean. That was when they first introduced them in Viet Nam. But after awhile the newer models had the bugs worked out of then and they were more dependable. But as you stated the AK 47 is more easier to get and probably cheaper. The machining on the AK 47 is stamped out metal parts making it cheaper to produce. The average used AR 15 the civilian version is about $1000.00. So I would hate to see the price of an M16 or it’s newer udated models.

      • early models didn’t have a strong enough recoil spring, hence, when the bolt slides forward, while there is sufficient force to chamber the next round, it’s not enough momentum to lock the breach. The immediate action handle allows manual ability to move the bolt forward to the locked position. Stretch the spring and you get a faster firing rate, as well as a positive breach lock.
Picked up my AR for $650 in ‘86. AK’s were going for $184!
Bought a house in the country and had a hottie wife.
At night, I would hear noises of the house settling. This was unsettling for me as it would sound like someone coming up the stairs!
Shed the house, shed the wife – kept the AR! All good for me!

pnemonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis is the word i would like to get the origin of.

    • Marina says: 46.1

ghijklmozxy, I made that word the homework question in my floccinaucinihilipilification video. The problem with that word is that it was merely invented to try to become the longest word in the English language. It has never been used to refer to the lung disease that it supposedly refers to.. it was just made up to represent a long word and really has never been used other than to represent a long word… so in that regard, many people don’t take it seriously.

      • But, maybe Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu has been adopted into English (Maori name for a hill in New Zealand)?

And, is this actually an English word? Lopadotemakhoselakhogaleokranioleipsanodrimhypotrimmatosilphiokarabomelitokatakekhymenokikhlepikossyphophattoperisteralektryonoptokephalliokigklopeleiolagōiosiraiobaphētraganopterýgōn

It’s the name of a food dish from an Aristophanes play the “Assemblymen” and is the translation or transliteration from Greek to English.

      • Check out James Joyce’s novel “Finnegan’s Wake.” He coined nine words that were over 100 letters long, but maybe they never made it into generally accepted English.

I would like the origin of the worlds longest word… pnemonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis.

The Ak47 is a great choice of weapon for faming purposes  Back in the days of online gaming.. The following weapons were my personal favourites.

The 1st one would be the “Springfied 03′ Sniper Rifle or KAR98 Sniper Rifle” from a game called ‘Medal of Honour : Allied Assault’.

However, instead of sticking to a sniper’s style of gameplay and trying to wait then pick and choose targets. I played more of a ‘kamikaze’ style game with nothing to lose  This made getting your targets look that much cooler and insane

The 2nd one would be the ‘MP5′ from the game Call of Duty 4 : Modern Warfare. The people who knew me online hated me for going kamikaze with this weapon, as I would normally get my target

    Those were the days

  101. Well, theres the Thompson Machine gun, thats one of my favorites.
and of course the winchester and the BAR, to name a few. Bigger, and badder, I prefer the TOW or the Dragon!~ The dragon being very dangerous…We could also fall back on the 106’s and how about mortars? ahh nomenclatures…anyone got any BA-ll00-NS?

I like the M4 Carbine

  104. Looking forward to the Russian edit.
The reason the soldier was dead and
with his AK was never revealed?
You would never find a soldier buried
with an M-16, the most highly sought
combat weapon on the planet, even
today. “Black power” as it was called
by Charlie in the Nam, is much easier
to reload under fire than the AK.
The good thing about AK’s is dirt
doesn’t affect the simple sheet metal
    constructed weapon so much. Good
thing, too, since they tend to get dropped
in the process of running for your life!
The M-14 which is also 7.62 mm, was
    replaced by the M-16, a 223 caliber
    weapon for many good reasons.
The pistol grip allows for one-handed
    use, impossible with other rifles.
The receiver has a flared magazine
port allowing reloads to be faster.
The 55 grain bullet tends to cause
wounds that disable, not kill, thus
one guy falls, two must care for him.
if the man is killed, only one man is
taken out of combat. Wounded – 3.
I could go on for pages, but others
will fill in the gaps I leave for them.

My semi-auto AR-15 cand be easily
converted to full auto, but al I need
is the semi mode. I don’t like hand
guns. Only for cops, maybe, except
they can be pussy’s too. nothing
There ain’t nuthin’ funny about a
woman with a gun. <- think about it.
Marina shouldn’t ever need to be
armed, ever. Lose the AK, darlin’!
I just have mine in case martial law
    goes in effect ( I live in Flori-duh )
    and doesn’t work. I will survuve…
I keep it clean as a sewing machine!
All my reloads are maximum velocity
rounds so, woe be unto ye who tries
    to f*ck with me!

I loved it when Marina discussed
    the nomenclature specifications.
A LOT sexier than the first time
I learned them. The military ought
to pick up on it. They won’t, though.

    What happened to
“once in the KGB, always in the KGB”?
    not very smart to advertise,
if you are a KGB mole agent.
    Must be stealth and guile,
you sure can guile ‘em, girl!
