Those two pretty eyes looking through the sights of that gun! I had read once on the webiste SMARTQUOTES that Albert Einstein had suggested to Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1940 that an atomic bomb could be developed based on his theories of physics . And he said in retrospect that if he had known how much harm his suggestion to builld the atomic bomb to Roosevelt would have caused he would have become a watchmaker and not a mathenatician/theoretical physicist. He would have repaired watches for a living instead of researching physics. Kind of like you lawnmower story.

They had “Russian by Radio” today on Voice of Russia, too. You speak Russian so well; but that is becuase you come from Russia. American US Army female recruits at Fort McClellan, Alabama in 1978 leared to shoot the american M-16 infantry rifle. And I need to remind myself of that when I hear the rich surbanites or the dumb pollocks heckling my home that my former wife had a job when we were married. But women are not helpless. I want an AK-47 rifle of my own. And I live on a dangerous street!

I enjoy playing that game, I think it is easier than playing the prequel. I wish they could have made Destroy All Humans! 3: Big Willie Unleashed for the PS2 format, but the whole thing with the budget cuts sucks.

Hi Marina, I’m currently learning to speak Russian. I Love learning languages.

I sure hope you can provide your videos both in English and Russian as well. Perhaps at the same time, this can create an interest in the Russian language among your fans.

I wish you can make Russian videos so that I’m prepared for my work when I migrate to Санкт-Петербу́рг

  22. Hotforwords, I love your videos!

Can you tell us all what the origin of the word “silly” is? I know about it already, but it has an interesting history and I’d just love to hear you explain it all. :)

  23. “merchantofdeath”, “ergo” means “therefore” in Latin. Pretty simple etymology, so I don’t think it;d make an interesting thing for hotforwords to do.

  24. Marina, could you explain the origin of the word “Ergo”. I’ve read it many times in novels and have seen that it means ‘therefore’ but how’d it come about?

    Thanks if you do!

  25. I very much like to hear what you have to about the word ” Hysterical”.

  26. Hey Marina, can u do the origin of the word farfetched it sounds different and i want to know how to use it in sentences when i talk

    One other thing, Marina.
Do you know which famous actress looks like you (I am serious)? I think she’s copying you actually. Can you guess?

My guess, in this order is: Charlize Theron, Elisha Cuthbert, Jessica Biel, Julie Benz.

How far off am I? None of these four can hold a candle to Marina who is a thousand times more beautiful. Of course, that’s why the others are copying Marina.

    Hey – Hi Marina!

I have a latest word request. It’s a small word ready for a big video
and plenty of responses & comments. While I was friends with a
Marina L. back in 2006, she had trouble grasping some of my humor.
Could have been me but, same jokes got laughs from different people.
Wikipedia’ed the word “joke” and it was more extensive than I
imagined. It had a section on Russian jokes with them and within
was a section refering to “untranslatable”.
With you being one of the smartest people I’ve come across, might
be cool to tackle some of that. I’m sure that you might get the highest
comment response by asking: “What is your favorite joke?”
So, origins and some “side-knowledge” about the word “joke”, please!

  35. oguzsaltik says: 71

Hi, HotforWords! Could you find the origin of the word “YOGURT”? I would really appreciate it.

  36. capman911 says: 70

Dang I have been here commenting for almost two hours and didn’t realise it was a new video made in Russian. I thought it was the same video as yesterdays.

  39. I just got a laugh. I took the new poll for
favorite weapon and there are only 2
votes, including mine. The other vote
is a “pacifist” rose picker! Ha Ha Ha!

Why don’t we have HQ fullscreen available in here??
If you guys keep up your end by rating Marina’s videos,
blitzers like me can help you set the new all-time high!
Hear that blitzers? Time to get off the bench and play!

I was checking out this site for a month before I signed
up or commented. Didn’t know to rate videos or nothin’!
Because I am wanting to be here, and enjoy the full
capability of this site – I have subscribed to EweTube
and other services ancilliary to HotForWords. I laugh
now when I see CoComment’s script scampering to
keep up with me when I blitz through the sites.

I even ended up abandoning IE7 altogether! Firefox
is so much faster, it’s ridiculous! <- shameless plug

Yup! Nice place you got here. Of course, it could be
nicer, like if we had a fridge in the corner to raid

  41. Marina,
I would like to know why a pointless errand, often with a ficticious objective, is often referred to as a ‘wild goose chase’. Wild geese are plentiful where I live, and in many other parts of the world, and are regularly hunted with some success by many people.

Can you unravel this mystery for me?

      • PRIVET .roadrunrch, sorry for my late answer,i remember that you asked me someyhing about the translation problems you can face with Russian:yes, unfortunately it is a hard job ,i think that it is definetely more difficult than translating from the other main European languages such as Spanish,French or even German, because Russian has a particularly structured grammar with verb aspects, this is maybe the most difficult thing to be understood and properly used, also the lexicon is quite problematic to be completely adapted in the translation process towards the western languages. I have many English-speaking friends who have been studying Russian at high levels for years with brilliant results but they still tell me that they often face some troubles in the translation (esp.written) works. However,i didn’t mean to dishearten you since i think you were interested in learning Russian,i really think that all these peculiarities make our language particularly fascinating!…

  53. One other thing, Marina.

Do you know which famous actress looks like you (I am serious)? I think she’s copying you actually. Can you guess?

My answer will be posted in the comments to your next video…….!

  54. Marina,

Everyone says you’re smart because of your language interests, but no ones says how really, really smart you are as an internet businesswoman. That is truly impressive. How brilliant!

What a great concept to ask your fans to register at your site to make suggestions, to get cards, etc.. You’re leveraging your interenet success into business success by generating subscribers and analyzable hit statistics for ad sales etc. You are really, really smart and brilliant at this-(didn’t I already say that?) My hat is off to you and kudos!!! If you are doing all this alone, it’s really amazing. Even with a partner (a lucky, lucky guy?), it’s very impressive.

Oh, by the way, what’s the origin of “kudos”–obviously, it’s greek. But I’d be interested to hear more about it.

This came in my email Bob, Thought you might like.

        ”Flying Star”
It seems that a young man volunteered for military service during World War II.
He had such a high aptitude for aviation that he was sent right to Pensacola skipping boot camp. The very first day at Pensacola he solos and is the best flier on the base. All they could do was give him his gold wings and assign him immediately to an aircraft carrier in the Pacific.
On his first day aboard he took off and single-handedly shot down 6 Japanese Zeroes. Then climbing up to 20,000 ft. he found 9 more Japanese planes and shot them all down, too. Noting that his fuel was getting low, he descended, circled the carrier and came in for a perfect landing on the deck. He threw back the canopy, climbed out and jogged over to the captain.
Saluting smartly he said, “Well sir, how did I do on my very first day?”
The captain turned around, bowed, and replied, “Ahh soo, you only make one velly impoltant mistake!”

    • thank you so much for your help ,i also requested that…so let’s wait with patience…it would definetely be one of the most interesting videos

:?: This is word request and is inspired by your umbrella lesson.

The British call a flashlight an electric torch.

Where did the term flashlight come from?

Flashlight being the American word for the British electric torch.

Also :?: Why do the British use the spelling gaol and gaoler for the American jail and jailer?

    • The US Coast Guard Navigation Rules (COLREGS) has electric torch written in a few places in the COLREGS. No mention of a flashlight anywhere. Strange hu?

      • Flashlight came about because when they were first invented they had a limited battery life. So the police officers that used them to walk a beat used to flash them on and off on different occasions so they could see in the dark and save battery life. Channel 42 How it’s Made.

  77. I have a word request, it my be not a odd or long word but one that is simple. What is the origin of the word “Word”?

  78. Кто смогло сопротивлять тому сексуальный голосу говоря в русском? Оно был очень подходящ для изобретателя оружия

    • capman911 says: 27.1

Argon can I learn cyrillic language from Rosetta stone :?: Or what would be the best way. :?:

      • I gues it depends on how comprehensive you want your knowledge to be.

I don’t know anyone that has used the Rosetta Stone program only on their commercials that it’s a good way to learn to speak and read it. A better way is to learn from someone you love since it gives you more motivation.

I personally just use Babel Fish as a quick and dirty translator to get by and I’m not even sure how good it is. I doubt Marina is impressed by it much but at least it was an effort to follow the video since it was in the appropriate language.

    • capman911 says: 27.2

Thanks Argon. I stored it in my favorites list.

      Mike

  79. Keep making those vids in Russian also by the way :)

  80. Or if anyone knows let me know please

  81. Where did u get the recording of the new Russian anthem? The only one I can find is the old Soviet one.

  82. Could you maybe do avideo on the word Russian and Russia? I saw it on the history channel once, but I’dlike to see a video on it by you.

  83. I always liked the way Russian sounded but ever since I subscribed to this site and Marina’s I like it even more. I can’t figure out why?

  84. pagedoll says: 21

Well, I don’t know what the heck you said but I do love that green top as well as that black jacket…very cool. You could do every lesson in russian and I’d still watch…Does that make me a sucka fool? I don’t know and I don’t care!

  85. stokesjrj1 says: 19

Marina, That was amazing, what a beautiful language. I didn’t understand most of what you said. But you already knew that:) You look great as always.

    Bye
    John

  86. Yup, gots to git me one of them thar translator programs so I can “speak” quasi-russian, like some of the other guys – LOL!!
Really, I’m a little disturbed by the fact that my understanding of the language is so limited. Thank you for not providing any subtitles as this was “just right” without them. I don’t mind being disturbed so much, now.
Maybe you could do a little conversational piece, sometime?
    how about this one:
Good day, Marina. How are you?
    Very good, and you?
Great! Who is that over there?
That is a friend of mine.
    What is his name?
    His name is ….

    anyway – something like that.
    maybe one more practical
    like, how to impress Russian
    women – a good come-on line
Would you like to meet him?

  87. koalabear says: 17

I didn’t understand any individual words, I don’t have an ear for languages.
You would think that with my gravatar picture of big ears,I would.

  88. Hello, my dear teacher, could you please do a video on the term “Double Entendre”?

  91. sgrock says: 12

    My dear Teacher,
OMG you sound even more beautiful in Russian. I have fired the AK 47, the AKM, the RPK, the RPG, the Uzi, Mini-14, Of course the M-16, the M-203, the M2 .50 caliber machine gun, the M-60 Machine Gun. My favorite was the M-16 w/ the M-203 attached.
Thank you again my dear teacher
    Sgrock

    • “whispering death” is what we
      called the 203.
      whisper quiet – instant death
      it’s a portmaneau phrase? LOL

I was first squad leader during
      ambush training. We did road
ambushes where I’d lay in the road
covered by leaves – with an M-60
ala Stallone, with the sling ‘n’ all
The squad was deployed at intervals
within a few yards of the road,
at a place where the road bends
      like a horseshoe-shape. I had
the front door and I’d slam it!
I’d wait until they almost stepped
on me to spring the trap. I just
stood up and cut loose, this was
the signal and we’d give ‘em Hell.
Scared some of them so bad I
      had to run or fight!.
      That M-60 does the job!

    Dearest Marina,

I want to ask about the suffix “wise.” As in, “How did it begin, origin-wise?” There are many examples: Money-wise, organization-wise, job-wise, etc., etc,.

Also a suggestion for your website. What about a clickable gallery of all your great photos that we can only see briefly in the videos and in small versions on the site?

    Moowah! (kissing sound)

    lostforwords (because of you).
