Haha  I had coulrophobia when I was at the carnival at age 8 once, I punched the puppet clown in the gut and ran… aww… Kobe so cute! he was looking at ur plant on the left =D

  2. darlingj says: 102

Now see…That was more of a definition using etymology…few people know that word – but now they do!

That woman must have had SOME freaky or frightening experience in her past…why can’t her therapist just ask about that and see what they might find, rather than frightening her by showing her pictures that upset her as a first step? :???:

  3. I thought you meant Karl Rove phobia. That guy is such a clown!

  4. cockydevil says: 99

what ever happened to the teachers pet????

  5. jerelds says: 98

    thanks Marina

  6. This could be why people are afraid of CLOWNS

  7. gwillikers says: 96

Is there a word for fear of Republicans?

Or is that the same as the fear of clowns?

    Gwillikers

  8. <a href=”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_BPcDOjJCc” check his out

  9. OMG! Bad clown, NO BALLOON FOR YOU!
    just clowning! very sad indeed…

  10. animalntaz says: 92

I never did like clowns, never understood them. I’m okay with Ronald McDonald, but that Burger King creeps me out. Kill the Burger King!

Oh, and Batman was awesome. YOU HEAR ME?! …it was awesome…
(Okay, maybe not that awesome, but definetly worth watching)

  11. matalexwolf says: 91

Not a fan as it goes as I do find them quite scary. Its more old dolls that to my head in. Once doing a viewing of a property, the owner had a vast collection of clown like dolls all over the house, all beedy eyed looking at me, I could tell some of them moved about too!!
My God daughter, Martha, once had a clown at her b-day party. He was very scary and most of her friends cried a bit to his strange acts. Freaky  – surreal but think clowns get my vote as they do make many others laugh and get happy inspite of what I think  Clowns are really clever

…thinking about it, Jack Nicolson has much to do with my fear of clowns in some way as with Stephen King. Actually made to watch, right in front of the TV, The Shining at the age of nine by my baby sitter as they canoodled on the sofa. It was the begining of a very strange life for me……

also scared of a Ghost, but not of the spiritual kind!
Well scared of heights too, have tried to over come this phobia with tandum drops on several occasions but ney, like my feet on the ground thanking you.
Big fear of drowning which isnt good for when I scuba, just remember to breathe, slowly…..just talk to the fishes, its all good!!!

Have no problems with spiders anymore as handled them when ever I can. Down under in the Queensland State, I visted the Daintree Forest, had the amazing opportunity to handle some rather hairy bird eating spiders. Plus a variety of other insects and so on. Just the Python at the foot of my sleeping bag one morning was a shock to the system as it curled around my legs for comfort.
…just leaves fear of flying, have done so many flights its just gotta be a matter of time, once airborn, calm as you like, no worries, what was all the fuss about, zanax!

    Be Brave :???:

  12. I have never been afraid of clowns. If I were afraid of clowns then it sure make going to work difficult… as you may have guessed, I am actually a clown. Balloon twisting, magic, juggling the whole nine yards and I’m also 6′6″.
There have been times when I’ve met coulrophobics before but the one constant I’ve noticed about them is that they are almost always adults or teenagers who have learned this fear from characters like Pennywise from It or the Joker from Batman. The only children I meet who are afraid of me, are the children so young they are afraid of any adult who are not his or her parents.
There are so many people out there with coulrophobia that most don’t see it for what it really is: An irrational fear!
Clowns aren’t dangerous, clowns aren’t radioactive, clowns aren’t poisonous, clowns don’t exploded (although I’ve had a number of balloon animals burst on me). Clowns exists for one reason: to make children happy and to make people laugh.
I’m sorry if I’ve gotten carried away but I’m tired of people acting like it’s normal and sensible to be afraid of clowns and all but trying to teach this irrational fear to there children. Well I’ll sign off now before I get carried away. I’m late for juggling practice anyway.

I don’t know anyone with coulrophobia but I do know some clowns and I mean some real BOZO’s!!

  16. sgrock says: 86

I am. Don’t know why. If I don’t know who the clown really is, I stay the hell away from them. I don’t even like my daughter going near them.

  17. lehighguy says: 85

Marina, where does the phrase “like the dickens” come from? For example, to say someone is “running like the dickens.”

  18. No clowning around  , I don’t know anyone with coulrophobia, but I know several people in their 30s that are deathly afraid of computers. They are not against technology or computers as such, but they have never operated one, don’t use ATMs, etc.

  19. whitehawk says: 83

lol, my parents, sisters and i are clowns, but we are a bit of a different type of clown, we use smaller shapes, and lighter make-up on our faces. you would be suprised how much of a difference that can make for people close up. circus clowns use larger and darker shapes to help be seen from the audience far away, thus when you get close it can be quiet intimidating. most people that are afraid of clowns are people that had some kind of bad experience with them, by either seeing a movie or face to face in person. some say they are afraid and they have never really seen one, so they are just saying it. their are rules of a sort for clowns but not many people know that, so they think they can just slap on some make-up and dance around being stupid, which works in a small way but they can easily do something that are in the shouldnt be done catigory and then put people off of clowns for many years, its sad and frustrating. not everyone is trained and yet they tarnish the name and tradition of clowning, i hope people meet the good clowns.

    • Most women wear clown suits? most wear some kind of makeup?

    • Whitehawk: Thanks for the story
Interesting comparison  Actually, some boys and men have a fear of beautiful women, or women in general. It’s called venustraphobia or caligynephobia.

Not that women are clown-like, but the whole fear of being rejected,
–what am I going to do,
      –I’ll sound stupid
      –she’ll never like me
      –pounding heart
      –mind going blank
phenomena that some guys have is enough to stand in the way of relationships and causes some men to be doormats.

Fortunately, people can get over phobias easy to live full lives…WITHOUT psychotropic meds

  20. sailingruss says: 82

You are the cutest on youtube.
Heres a fun word, try SPLUNGE, as far as I know its origin started in a skit on Monty Python’s Flying Circus.

  21. tanathos23 says: 81

isn’t a bit sadistic to expose that woman to clowns? :?:

    • geronimo says: 81.1

Not if it gets her over her irrational fears?

    • Tanathos: Good question  My response has 2 parts.

      (1) It is “justified” if you think about it as a voluntary act that the woman consented to. Also, the woman intended to see clowns in the future, and the only way to get there is to expose her to clowns.

      (2) That being said, the process shown on the video varies considerably depending on who does it :!: The procedure is called “Exposure” or “Systematic Desensitization”, where the person is slowly exposed to more and more evokative stimuli until they are able to handle being around things that are important to them…aka, social contact, driving, or clowns in this case.

Personally, if I were the therapist, I would have tried to expose her to the clown more slowly so as not to flood her out. This procedure elicited a strong reaction, so I would have asked her to do smaller steps. For instance, I would have let her slowly see the clown through a window first, then just open the door to see him, then I’d invite her to go just inside the door in a room where the clown’s back is turned, etc., until she was willing to come in contact with an active clown. Finally, I would be sure that the clown was doing something she enjoyed in that room. That way, it would be rewarding to be in the room  , instead of merely becoming “minimally tolerable,” as they did here.

Marina: I liked your picture on the beach…it looked like you were having a good time  I wonder if you were on a cruise.
      Thanks again, Beautiful!!

I knew this one because of an episode of Frasier where he tries to cure a woman of this phobia – very funny! In my opinion clowns aren’t scary AND they ain’t funny either! Let’s ban clowns – everyone will be so much happier…………apart from clowns of course

  27. Word/phrase request. Hello HotForWords! I found you last week and have added some wonderful new phrases to my vocabulary. Thank-you for the free lessons. Which brings me onto the phrase: “Never look a Gift Horse in the mouth” What is a gift horse? and why shouldn’t I peek in its mouth if I wish to?

My son’s former girlfreind had coulrophobia, bad… maybe why she seemed to dislike me. Think about the clowns, dressed up to draw attention to themselves. What are their motives??? Could be they just want attention, alas, but some may have a pure heart in wanting to bring a momment of happiness to someones life (miserable existence).
Some do it solely for the paycheck (pros), others to scare, even some to protect ie. Rodeo Clowns. Probably the worst thing for a clown to be, would be to be irrelevant in a mad world.
Clowns spark different emotions in me… I’ve just spent the last hour listening to different versions of this song, it’s such a great song & almost every vesion is great…Send in the clowns

  29. why is it that they call rich people ‘Blue Bloods’? It’s kind of weird.

    • not specially rich people ,more like royal people.
and the origin is not known.i think
some say its because of rich people in midevil times suffered a lot from “silverpoisening” im not sure if they call it that in english because i just plain translated it from dutch but anyways the silverpoisening gave them blue/grey skin/
another theorie says its because the spanish royalty in mideviil used to look at the white skin and blue vains to see of someone was royalty or mixed blood. so im kinda confused . :?:

  35. I’m not scared of them, but they make me feel… I dont know. Maybe I am. Its hard to describe, anyway I just dont want to see them at all, theyre creepy.

Dear teacher, could you investigate something for me? I saw a label “Crapperr and Co.” on an old shop sign, they sold toilets. Is that where the word crap comes from? Or was it just a sign meant to be funny and it came from somewhere else?

I’m the scariest clown in the world. Because I’m the clown who is about to release a book, describing how the anti-Christblows up the world to cool global warming!
But I’m a nice clown, so please let me share with you the longest word in the world: THIS IS SCARY!!!! THE LONGEST WORD IN THE WORLD!!!!
    Direct from my book manuscript:
Later, the longest word in the English language, pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanokoniosis, was created to specifically describe (classified. End of Transmission)

I think my 6th grade teacher must of had coulrophobia, because she always telling me to stop clowning around. I don’t fear clowns I just hate them, they just bug me.

When I was 4 years old my mom put a painting of a clown in my room that I was afraid of when it was time to sleep. During the day was no problem but when the lights went out, I could swear it eye’s followed me. I use to take it down and turn it around to face the wall every night and my mom would get mad. I didn’t have a fear of clowns in general because my favorite show on TV back then was Bozo the clown.

  43. piimco says: 56

    Tequila!
    hahaha
    please!

  44. Chemikal says: 55

Aw Marina, clowns are just silly. And they do it on purpose too, so no need to think that while wearing that outfit they are not human anymore, or that they are possessed by a criminal spirit. And if you haven’t thought of them that way, than I’m sorry for bringing it up. Sleep tight :D

I know a phobia is no joke, but Marina is smart enough not to have any. You see, phobias generally comes from lack of knowledge or being mislead into thinking something is dangerous. Danger is the main cause of fear, and can trigger a powerful physical reaction and even bursting into tears. Marina if you still think your afraid of clowns, lend me your AK for a while. :-) I won’t kill any, I’ll just instill Chemikalphobia for every clown, clowness and clownie out there. :D

    • aLx says: 55.1

Marina is smart enough not to have any. You see, phobias generally comes from lack of knowledge or being mislead into thinking something is dangerous.

so, what are you saying? smart people don’t have phobias? that the likelihood of getting or having a phobia dicreases the smarter you are? are you serious?

      • No, being smart is not enough to protect you from encountering a phobia. But having knowledge on phobia-inducing things, will help you prevent ever having to fear the unknown (a natural reaction).
So what is a smart person? One that possesses knowledge. So now you understand how I’ve made my synapse. Hey I might even be wrong, as a smart person might have an active imagination, and that can generate anything from a homicidal clown, omnipresent spiders, imaginary stalkers, to a pinching fairy.
Not having a phobia clouds your understanding of having an irrational fear of something. But it remains just that… irrational; having no connotations with reality. That’s why it’s a sickness and is treated differently from one patient to another, after psychophysiological assessments are done.(patients grade their fears)
In conclusion. I think personality and personal background weigh more than actually having a fat brain. Thanks for the observation aLx.

        All the best,
        Chemikal

      • According to the book, The Gift of Fear, the #1 fear people have is shark attack, doesn’t make sense for a person in South Dakota; but phobias aren’t logical, based on intelligence or knowledge, it is based on a whacked & irrational notion, i.e. A person with coulrophobia might subconsciously believe that a clown will tie them-up and put them on train tracks with a train coming. Now, learning all about trains or clowns doesn’t cure, but letting the individual find what their own irrational link is does cure. That’s what they are doing with the woman in the video.

      • Thats strange(okay4now) I thought the number one fear was public speaking followed by death at number 2.

      • Both discussed in the book & why they are feared. Public speaking is feared because person feels they’ll be humiliated, loose their job & be on the streets.

  47. seesixcm6 says: 52

Dear Marina, First of all, I rate your video five stars. Your companion video clip about the woman’s fear had a hopeful ending. Perhaps she will overcome this.
For your homework, the answer is no, I don’t suffer from coulrophobia. Also, I don’t know any scary clown stories. You are right about the Batman movies: the villain called the Joker was originally intended as a clown. This is the first video in which I saw you in bed! There’s an early scene in which you come out from under the covers in your white slip, and the scene after the clown appears, when you scream and hide under the covers. (I hope I never cause you to do that!) In the last scene of your video, you purse your lips as if you were going to send us a kiss. I expected a kiss from you. But instead, you slowly blinked your eyes! :-( I hope you will send us two kisses next time. (Yes, I miss your kiss!)
How interesting that you posted a new video on Saturday night! I wonder if you “mass produce” five or six videos at a time, then do your editing of adding still photos and captions, and then release your videos, one at a time. I think I’d manage production that way! Whatever your method is, you produce wonderful videos! Your dear student, seesix CM6

It’s a Clown,,, laught, giggle, tickle.

Wait a sec. I get it now.
Marina does makeup right and then = beauty.
Clown’s do makeup wrong and then = scary.

Coulrophobia then = fear of those who do a bad job on their makeup.
Another mystery solved by Bozo and Ronald McDonald.

For your homework. If you have Coulrophobia, do you favor Whooper’s over Big Mac’s?

  49. okay4now says: 50

Phobias are suppose to be the easiest things of all psyche disorders to cure with bad consequences uncured. Imagine a clown getting onto an elevator for a birthday party on the top floor & the other man in the elevator is a professional boxer with coulrophobia. Who wins that one? Imagine the headlines: Champ on canvass after the 13th or Clown pummeled in mysterious homicide:shock:

  55. felicity says: 44

Hi, everyone. Here is felicity from Japan. The word “coulrophobia” reminds me of Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City. She was one of people who are scared of clowns. and Sex and the City movie is coming soon in Japan, I can’t wait,,,

    • you are right, Felicity…

Sex and the City always struck me as a chick show; i didn’t get into it…

of course, that could also be because i use rabbit-ears on the tv i inherited…

      • You still remember things about Carrie  I use that as an English text.

      • Sat next to one of the producers for Sex in the City in a bar/restaurant during a film festival, when I told her I’d heard of her show but hadn’t seen it, she said I should check it out; then I told her that I had not had TV for 7 years & she looked at me like I was the stupidest most back woods person she’d ever met…when the series came out on DVD (which I used) I watched almost every one, a good show—she was even in a few, but my episode with her was too funny…

  57. reedbabe says: 42

Hi Marina, What about the origin and meaning of “Onomatopoeia”?
    Thanks, Toni

  58. In fact COULROPHOBIA is a fear of the FALSE. I personally do not find clowns funny and I hate circus. It’s all false. It’s not real life. We all know the clowns can be very sad. The biggest danger for humanes is to be treated as children by politicians dressed like clowns. Behind a clown there is the danger of a false personality. Behind a smiling face a criminal, an evil person can be hidden. COULROPHOBIA is not really “crazy”. This woman certainly suffered of being betrayed in her childhood.

  59. protac6 says: 40

Shit, if every clown looked like the one in the Coulrophobia video, I would probably be right with that woman panicking in the corner. Now I know why Chuckie from Rugrats is scared of clowns.

It’s interesting how paralyzing a phobia can be. I don’t suffer from Coulrophobia but I’ve had a few phobia’s in my life. I absolutely hate spiders. When I was over in Afghanistan, everyone in my unit seemed to want to keep those little creepy crawlers for pets. I think I made it very clear not to bring those damn things around me…**I was holding my rifle at the time, that probably had something to do with it**…

I have to admit I’m not fond of heights and closed spaces either. I’ve never really gotten over those. My feet and hands always start to tingle when I’m up in a high place, unless it’s a building where I can’t ell how far up I am.

I remember the first time I had to put on the gas mask in Basic Training. That’s when it really hit me that I’m claustrophobic….I absolutely can’t stand the feeling of being closed in or trapped.

Actually…I can relate to all of those you mentioned. If you think about it…maybe it is NORMAL to have those fears….

Maybe that is how we stay ALIVE. I think people who can go up on a roof of a building or hang out on a balcony 1000 feet in the air and NOT feel a tingle are the weird ones. How is this possible??

What about those Vegas rides at the Stratosphere? Anybody been up there and had no fear at all and felt perfectly normal?? I stood down below and said “oh hell no”

    • I have a friend that you might have seen on TV. His name is Eddie on the Deadliest Catch. He is has a fear of very small spiders. Now a guy who handles ugly king crabs all day should fear those ugly things. But no it doesn’t bother him. I gave him a giant rubber black spider. He thought is was cute. He even strapped it to the grill of his truck. I’ll have to post that photo someday. So I find it odd that he fears little spiders and not the larger ones.

I get weak in the knees when I see other people climbing high places, but I have no fear if I am the one climbing. Even I think that is weird. I have pictures of myself climbing the I beams under a bridge 700 feet high, and on that same day when my brother climbed after me, I almost couldn’t stand up. :?:

Wow Marina…that one was very interesting and the other video was sad to watch. I hope she did well w/ treatment and got over it.

Here is my phobia: Hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia. What a cool word, huh? It is fear of the number 666. I hate to see it, but I don’t really have disabling fear…..so maybe not really my phobia….maybe a dislike is a better word.

I do have Mysophobia—a fear of germs or dirt or contamination…although I thought it was called germophobia? (I looked it up)

I have a cousin who has a phobia of frogs. She screams her head off if she sees one.

    • YES that clown really made me get nightmares when i was a kid.
      deffinatly scariest clown ever.
i think its name was “”pennywise” the clown
the kids saw him as a clown but he was an illusion ,in real he was a evil big spider .as big as two men high.
so you got Arachnophobia and Coulrophobia in 1 movie
      fun

That woman’s woobie (Parsley was it?) got me thinking. It must have been a pretty famous baby to come up with the word “woobie” since a lot of us use it. Wanna try that one Marina?

  72. Marina, thank you for your great video and introducing a subject I knew very little of. Thank you also for adding the other video, which puts everything into perspective. Excellent as always.

You take a trip to Vegas, and you unknowingly book yourself a room at Circus-Circus. You have fun in the casino, have a great meal at the steak house, play Black Jack and Craps until 3:00 am. You get sleepy and head for your room on the 15th floor. You’re alone. You get out of the elevator and walk to the corridor. It is long, and your room is about half way down. Suddenly, on the extreme other end of the corridor, you see an evil vicious laughing CLOWN!!! You run towards your room, and the clown runs from the other direction. You get your key out, because if you get there first you’ll be safe in your room. But the clown is running pretty fast…..you’re heart racing you’re out of breath, you feel like everything is in slow motion……..the clown is howling and laughing………………….did you make it??????

Your video is nice again(sry, can´t tell you you´re looking great, it seems like I get hanged for that), but the one with the woman is hurting me, I know some Clowns look sort of evil, I just can´t understand why she felt like that.
I want to know how it came to that point, it will make it easier to cure it in the future.

I do not sufer from it, and I don´t have any stories sry.

Phobias are strange.. I don’t understand them. I can understand feeling afraid, but not to the point of uncontrollable crying and rapid breathing, anxiety, stress, and possibly more — over something that you’re fully aware is not dangerous or going to cause you any harm at all.

I wonder how people who fear doorknobs get around..

  77. pairadots says: 21

Do you think that woman is afraid of Marilyn Manson too. He’s a man with too much make-up that dresses badly as well.

  79. capman911 says: 19

Ok I see the video now.

  80. the shaun says: 18

I’ve only seen children afraid of clowns, probably due to the extremely distorted face, and odd colors emphasizing the smile, or the eyes. I’m not sure why it would travel on into adulthood, as an adult should be fully aware that it is just a person with makeup, and that the emphasis on certain facial features is to bring out an exaggerated smile for laughs

Of course, some clown faces can be made to look threatening, or evil by emphasizing different things.

    • You’re right adults should be fully aware of alot of things, yet a frightening experance can stick with a person for a real long time. Some people who suffer from coulrophobia have no reason why.

    • Shaun, I think your exactly right, distorted face and odd colors are frighting to some children. We first recognize shapes then we blend color information later on. Its a lot for a kid to view when just learning how the world around them works. I heard (I don’t have any references if this is true or not) having your kids get their face painted helps with the new assocation. They learn that clowns are wearing paint just like they put on their own faces. I think it would also help if children seen a clown put on their makeup.

      • aLx says: 18.2.1

        jack,

We first recognize shapes then we blend color information later on.

this sounds both interesting and weird. how do you recognize a shape without recognizing the color? i don’t believe in colors, that is, i don’t think that any objects have a color; a color is not an inherent feature of a certain entity. our brain, however, makes us perceive (non-abstract) objects with colors. how do you perceive an object without color? (”grayscale” images are colored, too.)

      • aLx,

As I understand it ( I could be wrong because I really don’t trust what I read in books or see in educational videos.) There is people with brain damage in just small areas of the brain. I watch a video years ago about a woman that could see simple object just fine but could not tell it was. She could recognize the colors and guess what the item was but where the image of the shape of the object was destroyed. It was quite interesting to watch her describe the objects colors. But was unable to tell the difference from a book or a lamp. I a remember, with every object we see the brain stores 3 pieces of that image in separate parts of the brain. Color and shape are two but I don’t remember what the third was.
There is also this 21 day experiment how your brain can reprogram what is sees. I have done a similar experiment and it does work. I no longer have to wear glasses. There is even medical papers proving my eye sight has improved. Did you know that if you put on a pair of binoculars that make the image of what you see upside down, in 21 days your brain will make it right side up? Take off the binoculars and everything is upside down again.

Your right about object don’t have color. They only absorb all rays of light and only reflect the one or more colors, or in other words frequencys of light. Like red light is about 530 nanometers.

Grayscale is only the difference or shades between black and white.
Grayscale doesn’t show the difference of the wave length in a broader sense. Thats why we have two types of photo receptors, rods and cones in our eyes. The rods are more numerous, some 120 million, and are more sensitive than the cones. There are 6 to 7 million cones provide the eye’s color sensitivity and they are much more concentrated in the central yellow spot known as the macula. Cones can be divided into “red” cones (64%), “green” cones (32%), and “blue” cones (2%). The “blue” cones have the highest sensitivity and are mostly found outside the fovea, leading to some distinctions in the eye’s blue perception. Ok I better stop there. … I could go on for days. See what happens when the doc makes you wear bifocals?

Object emit much more information than meets the eye. That was only visible light. We missed out in inferred light among other things.

I’m thoroughly confused. :???: How did it come to mean idiot when it orginally meant great hunter? Can you help me on this?

  88. smokey36bear says: 9

No I don’t suffer COULROPHOBIA, but I can see why some people do. When some clowns perform they like to get up close to kids and this is their first exposure to them. When you are young it could seem knd of scary. Scary enough to stick with you for a real long time. As I mantiond in the “Feisty” lesson I was attacked by a dog when I was younger, and it took me about 25 years to get over my phobia of dogs.
