Teacher’s Assistant Captain Jack

Greetings fellow students,

I am Captain Jack. The new lead Teacher’s Assistant for HotForWords. As you may already know Marina spends full time in working on her HotForWords show. She does this all by herself. It’s a big undertaking running the classroom of a million plus students, making new video lessons, answering questions, updating the website, etc. That is what I am here to do; to take on some of the drudgery work for her. In this way she will have more time finish other projects she has been wanting to work on to make the whole HotForWords learning experience better. She has many great ideas to explore that I think you’re going to like.

A little about me. I am a US Coast Guard Licensed Captain and Instructor. Like Marina, I too am a teacher. I teach students on what they need to know to pass the USCG licensing exam, so they can get their license to become ship Captains like me. You can learn more about me at my website: captainjack.ws

I do not have a Philology degree as Marina does. I am not an expert in Philology. I leave all that up to our dear teacher. I do some etymology as a hobby. Mostly I study origins of Nautical words. Those intrigue me the most.

For all you that are applying for a TA position. There is still need for more TAs. So go ahead and let us know you are interested.

Well I have to go to work now. Marina is asking, “Where’s my coffee I asked for?!!”

Jay was the pervious TA and did an AMAZING JOB!  You can find his page here.

    It’s unfair.

The quiz is biased against dull, uninteresting people such as myself.

    Thanks Jnaples,

Well dude, you wouldn’t believe the number of pots of coffee I have to make. Our dear teacher almost never sleeps. I might have to buy a Starbucks and attach it to her condo. Then it would become a Starbucks Penthouse (see: video lesson ).

Speaking of boats and coffee  , Isn’t that a mermaid on the Starbucks’ logo? Be sure to put one on Marina’s condo door so I know where to go to join you guys for an espresso! I promise I won’t step on Kobe.

Good luck again on the gig! I’m sure she’ll keep you busy…especially with this sister thingie going on.

Question: If I filled out an application in April and haven’t been called on yet, then should I assume that I’m no longer in the running :?:
Is there anything I can do to increase my likelihood of being called on :?:

CaptainJack replied on August 2nd, 2008 2:22 pm:

I think Marina still has all the applications. There might be a million of them by now. So you are still in the running. Marin has many projects in the works as well as keeping up with the daily video lessons.

Yes, just keep visiting here and contributing as you have.

Awe that is so special. Well tell your friend this, that I wish she (or he) had a wonderful and happy birthday. July 25th is a great day to be proud of because she and I where born as a gift to the world.
A bit of history she and I have in common on this day, In July 25th 1963, the United States, the Soviet Union and Britain initialed a treaty in Moscow prohibiting the testing of nuclear weapons in the atmosphere, in space or underwater.

Thanks Marina! All your loyal students here have really made my B-Day so very special, and promoting me to TA was a fantastic gift. I will remember this day forever.

    Captain Jack,

Congrats! May I suggest one thing? Do you need an assistant?
Actually……my suggestion is that you request your comments show up in blue or something other than pink!!! I’m so used to pink=Marina comment!

Keep up the good work

CaptainJack replied on July 25th, 2008 10:31 am:

BoArgMir, Thanks. Yes we are still searching for more assistants. I’m still working how I can best assist marina in her projects. Once I get that figured out. I would like to get other TAs in doing some work. I would like to see a network built up of different talents that if the need ever arise one could be called on.

Yes I too am used to seeing pink for Marina’s comments. Make it really easy to find. Marina and I are working on the pink thing. Its set up that who the author of a post is colored pink. We are looking into seeing if there can be different colors for authors. My comments are normal on post that she has authored so this is the only page you will see me colored pink on.

    Congratulations, Captain Jack!
It’s great that you have the time to devote to helping run the show here. I trust you won’t call the truant officer on me if I have to miss a couple lessons now and then. You know I’m here in spirit anyway, even if I’m late for class (by a couple days) now and then.

CaptainJack replied on July 25th, 2008 10:21 am:

Time??!! Who has time? heheheh. Im doing 4 hour classes now so it give me more time for other projects. My last class was canceled so I have even more time to help out.

Im taking role call every day and if your late I’m going to let Marina know and let her deal with you. Im sure she will give you detention. Oh wait… that’s not a penalty. Hum…Might have to rethink this.

WTG :!: Captain Jack :!: Cargo Rats on your new position you certainly deserve the recognition. Maybe you can use your new influence to put in a good word for Marina to do that Avatar Word Request :?: Perhaps light a fire under her?

Since they are growing in popularity not just in VR but also on forums like this one and you seemed to think it was a good idea when I suggested it

CaptainJack replied on July 24th, 2008 3:44 pm:

You know there is a SL programmer called “Workingonit Linden”? Just pretend Marina’s name is “Workingonit Marina”. She might make an inworld video lesson. Its going to take some time so we’ll have to be patient and see. A big part of my position is to help her with some things to free up some of her time.

I hope to see you inworld someday Argon. Im CaptainJack Delcon.

Or how about the little “round to’it” I have one made out of leather.

ArgonTheAware replied on July 24th, 2008 6:35 pm:

Well as I mentioned it doesn’t necessarily have to be machinima since the resolution and the animation is limited for the memory and the graphic engine.using those programs.

It might be better to use a more custom modeling setup to be able to get exactly the right look and animations for the lesson. For the parts of in that video that weren’t captured in SL (which was only to relate it to the machinima video that it was a response to) I recorded the voice-over in Cool Edit, used Poser for the figures and Mimic for the lip-synching. It’s easier to get everything to match up better that way.

For more complex scenes I usually render the frames of animation separately that way I can combine them in different layers to add different effects and other elements in Photoshop then put them together at 30 FPS so that they played more smoothly. That way you can get exactly the footage you’ve set out to do instead of all the compromises you have to make with machinima.

Just some suggestions to consider to get the best lesson across that’s appropriate for the subject.

CaptainJack replied on July 25th, 2008 10:05 am:

I was thinking something a bit quicker & easier, like Torley Linden’s videos. Using Marina’s avatar as more like a … Well like Vana White, just smiling and moving words around. I would like to talk more about this with you. Send me an email: jack (at) captainjack (dot) ws.
