Hi Marina. I always enjoy you on the O’reilly factor and I think its cool that you embedded your personal photos and memories in so many of your videos, its a great idea to essentially preserve them for posterity. I wonder though if you could also share some of the background to your success. You could reveal it in pieces and I’m sure it won’t affect the incredible growth in views and subscribers still to come.

    poor poor marina,

shes under the corrupted influence of that dick O’reilly.
plz stay far away from that dickhead marina.
he says nasty things like he did about that kidnapped boy,
i quoute “the kid didnt had a hard time because he didint had to go to school all that time he was away from his parents” we talking about a kidnapped and molested kid here that was missing for years he never apoligized for anything he was wrong about afterwards ,and if you disagree with him.he cuts you off the show ,what a turd.

A little note, Marina. I’m not an etimologist/philologist, but i remember that the precise translation of Republican/Republic is from “Res Publica”, which literarily means “the public thing” or “public affair”…it’s very different from the greek “demos”..because population in ancient Rome was somehow less involved in politics than in Athens before, roughly.

  12. v35t37 on August 18th, 2008 1:02 am

    Hello, Marina
As one from Former USSR, I know the history of Gulag word, but could’n understand your words I a show. In my humble opinion the word “Gulag” was an acronym for russian “Главное управление лагерей” or “concentration camp administration” in English… Am I right?

  13. donfelipegonzales on August 12th, 2008 12:19 pm

    Dear teacher,
How difficult is it when this americans speak so quickly! Very interesting lessons. You played the nice one with this res-publica and demos-cratos thing (it means the same thing)……

Funny how the Russian gulag novelist just died Alexander Solzhenitsyn. You are psychic now?

  15. mittheman on August 6th, 2008 5:24 am

This is where I discovered you! Thank you Bill O’Reilly!!

“You have enemies? Good. That means you have stood up for something, sometime in your life.” Winston Churchill.

Maybe this is why Bill O’Reilly has so many enemies.

  16. danielpool52 on August 4th, 2008 9:39 pm

hi marina i would like to know the origin of the word liberal

  17. KlaxonCow on August 3rd, 2008 9:27 pm

Why did O’Reilly pointlessly mention the Soviet Gulags at the end there?

    Just because Marina’s Russian?

You should have hit him back by asking whether Bush has shut down the Guantanamo concentration camp yet, as the Supreme Court has demanded on the supreme authority of the Constitution of the United States.

Or maybe asked him if he knew the history behind the phrase “Manifest Destiny” and what it meant for the Native Americans, perhaps?

Then, of course, point out to him the meanings of the words “Soviet” and “Russian”. So that, in future, he’d realise that the two are NOT synonyms. Just as the Nazi party might have been German, but not all Germans were Nazis.

Indeed, as O’Reilly directly demonstrates in his own person, not all Nazis are necessarily German either.

Clearly, Marina, your beautiful, brainy presence intimidates O’Reilly greatly. To the point of not knowing how to retain the mock “gentlemanly conduct” he prides himself on having.

Excellent. Keep up the good work, ma’am. I salute you. :D

Love the very sophisticated look, Marina - understated dress, soft makeup, great hair style. Bill got it right - “you gotta love her”. We all do!

Just curious - I submitted some link button design suggestions a week or so ago and haven’t heard back from anyone. Is there a better email addy to use?

    Thanks.

Aha! Now I know why you and the word Blooter and codswallop made it onto hot trends the other day!

  20. sniperskaya on August 1st, 2008 6:56 pm

ArgonTheAware replied on August 3rd, 2008 8:00 pm:

Marina, you were great :!:

  23. manosmoo on August 1st, 2008 11:24 am

Hm, you made a little mistake there Marina. Kratos doesnt mean Rule, Kratos means “state” in modern Greek and in ancient Greek it meant a “town”. Well not exactly a town but people who were together in an area…

Marina replied on August 1st, 2008 11:44 am:

My Oxford English Dictionary states that:
Democracy comes from the Greek Democratia which is a combination of: demos, meaning the commoners, people and kratia from kratos meaning rule, sway, authority.

Kratos might mean state in modern Greek.. but I believe it comes from the older meaning of authority… meaning that the state rules over you.. has the authority over you.

James replied on August 1st, 2008 12:43 pm:

I want one of those dictionaries, I shall buy one soon

manosmoo replied on August 1st, 2008 3:31 pm:

Hm, yeah… I guess you’re right!! That’s why Polis-Kratos means “A town ruled by its people”… My god, you don’t only teach english to me, but also ancient Greek!! (I hate them!! :P)

You were great once again Marina.

sniperskaya replied on August 1st, 2008 7:01 pm:

Marina, I guess that being from the former Soviet Union you know all about “…the state rules over you.. has the authority over you.”

    Hello there.
My name is Sérgio and I work as an English tutor here in Brazil.
Needless to say you’re the best, because you’re the best.
My question is: where does the expression “night owl” come from?
I’d be only too glad if you could make a video class.
    Thanks.

    Excellent Job Marina,

You came across very pleasant and professional.
    O’Reilly shouldn’t interupt you. :???:
You did a fine job of carrying yourself, he doesn’t need to help.

MCLIJazz replied on August 1st, 2008 1:02 pm:

“The Factor” is a fast-paced show. Plus, the segment was pre-recorded. So, Marina might have said more, but it was cut for time. But I don’t know; I don’t work for the show.

  27. okay4now on August 1st, 2008 8:04 am

Nice Marina! I new someone who was in a Russain gulag for over 7 years & he learned only one thing in Russian: ‘more please’ which he used sometimes for food. He went on to live a full life.

  28. gill on August 1st, 2008 8:04 am

Congratulations Marina, you did well, you are a wise woman why don’t you go in politics and be a peace maker between the americans and the russians?

  29. James on August 1st, 2008 1:50 am

    Feckless? Brainless

  30. Chemikal on July 31st, 2008 11:14 pm

    Coolness v2.0.
Political words indeed, next time maybe he could air a 30 second compilation of some of your past lessons. (that would for sure interest the audience) Bill seems really nice, I’m gonna e-mail him about this and propose to re-invite you as soon as possible to do a another word show.
I believe your quite exploitable in a show such as his. (and many others for that manner). Just don’t accept any residency jobs.(always read the fine print, most deals demand stoppage to youtube broadcasting). Besides I imagined you to be more the Marina from the block, that used to had a little, now she has a lot. No matter where she goes, she knows where she cames from! pam pam… :-)

  31. leonard on July 31st, 2008 10:39 pm

Marina, your second appearance on “The Factor” rates as an A+. You were excellent.
And if anybody is going to write to Bill, include your name and location (”name and town”) in the signature, and write about one to three short, punchy paragraphs or sentences. Or as Bill would say, “keep it pithy.”

Dear Marina, You did extremely well on the O’Reilly show. You looked beautiful and you spoke clearly and distinctly so everyone could understand. I sent Mr. O’Reilly an e-mail to suggest that on your next appearance, he should instruct his camera crew to spend more time on you than Mr. O’Reilly! :-)
