The [Walloons], inhabitants of Wallonia, the southern, French-speaking half of Belgium…Belgian historian Jo Gerard recounts that potatoes were fried in 1680 in the [Spanish Netherlands], in the area of “the Meuse valley between Dinant and Liège, Belgium.

    Etymology

Oven baked fries   Etymology—The phrase means potatoes fried in the French sense of the verb “to cook”, which can mean either sautéing or deep-grease frying. While its French origin, frire, unambiguously means deep-frying, frites being its past participle is used with a plural feminine substantive, as in pommes de terre frites (“deep-fried potatoes”).

…The potato is a starchy, tuberous crop from the perennial Solanum tuberosum of the Solanaceae family (also known as the nightshades). …ps~ hard on the joints :???:

  2. rijk says: 143

The ones your eating are Belgium fries (they are thick) The French fries are very thin something like halve the width of a Belgium fries.

The Belgium fries are the best.

  3. MtnDood says: 142

So that means French toast isn’t as [romantic] as I thought? Darn that means I’m not so sexy with a [loaf] of bread in my teeth …

  4. lima_seven says: 141

    tough one…
    althought dont eat much fries.
did you know potatoes are originally peruvian?
and started eating them by accident in europe?
    do you know how?
    ;)

I’m of Belgian descent… I knew that one! I did not know that it started in 1918 after the Great War, though. My favorite French Fries come from Culver’s Resturant (a chain of Fast food stores in the upper-mid-west). Thank you.

  6. Lmfao. Love the stuff she puts in ” Bon Jur” And gorby running at the end :D

  7. alatus_leo says: 137

Don’t ever tell a Belgian that French fries are French. Us Belgians are abnormally sensitive about the topic.

    Five Guys Burgers
    makes the best fries.

    Belgium huh?
I always thought the first French Fries were made in greece.
    ;)

  9. best french fries…hhhmmmm…..haven’t been to McD’s or Burger King for ages but a place in Henley I go to occasionally is pretty good at French Fries. In ozz, they call crisps chips like we brits call french fries chips. Vistied France recently, tried some snails and frog legs, with fries…bloody awful if not gross. Now I’m feeling chipper again

  10. andrebbb says: 134

Winghouse (Ker’s Winghouse) has the best fries. serve them up with
a dip of Jalapeno cheese and it’s better than candy !!!

  13. Dear teacher,
Thank you so much ! Yes french fries are not french they are belgian ! Merci au nom de toute la nation française ! Thank you from all the french people ! There is a big difference between France and Belgium! They have a king we have a president, every body speak french in France, half Belgium speak another language! They eat french fries all the time and we prefer “pot au feu” or “osso buco” or “boeuf bourguignon” etc…. so this is not the same country ! These are not the same traditions !
    Amicalement,
Don Felipe Gonzales el gaucho de las vegas

    • Of course, in France, they are typically just referred to as frites. The whole freedom fries movement was stupid. France has a president? I didn’t know that. I just thought that Carla Bruni was in charge. When you say la nation française, you mean that hexagon thingy, right? Whatever. I’m off to the Paris Las Vegas to grab a burger and fries…. Il y a des gauchos dans les parages ? Faut aller chercher un peu…

      • Dear fellow student,
Hey hey hey! what a french touch, are you french too? Are you just an excellent francophone? No there is no gaucho in France, just people that dream of the wild west or the mexican wide open.
        Amicalement,
Don Felipe Gonzales that prefers “les pommes de terre sautées”

      • Oh, donfelipegonzales, I’m just an Ozark hillbilly living in Las Vegas.

  20. miahmoore1 says: 124

the best fries are from any small mom and pop restaurants. They’re thick and crunchy and taste like real potatoes, not like McDonald’s. The worst fries, sadly, are from In and Out Burger. They’re always soggy and have no taste. Gross!

  21. Not to get off subject, but it’s raining here. Is it just me or does anyone else love the smell in the air just before, during, and after a good rain fall. Thunder storms are even better.

  22. edtimbob says: 121

Wendy’s has the best fries, if they hot and cooked long enough so that they aren’t soggy. Go Dave!

  23. stormygirl says: 120

  25. when i’m in the mood, i make the best french fries…

Some of you must be retired….hold on while I try to control my envy  OK……….

Don’t have any new word requests…still waiting on Cold Turkey and Testify to be answered.

OH…..and my favorite way to eat potatoes……….is called PAPITAS CON HUEVOS………….it is fried potatoes with eggs and I put a little hot sauce and cheese on top….so good!!

    • I’m catching up on videos since AK-47 (a couple of June vids, all of July, and half of August!) because of the time demands of teaching and being a student. It takes time to catch up, especially if you want to read some of the comments and perhaps add one or two.

Hello Marina! I thought a good word for your research would be Buck as in the slang for a dollar and how it is used in the phrase ‘passing the buck’ I believe the term started during the old west in the United States

  42. In terms of typical fast food chains, McDonald’s.

When I was at studying at the Rochester Institute of Technology, Jay’s Diner has the best fries. I look for the crispiness on the outside and the chewy warmth on the inside of the fries.

Come to think of it, seafood restaurants tend to have some good fries.

  43. Hi Marina.
    This is Sérgio again.
About your class on spoonerism, I’ve got one sentence that you gonna like: “It is kisstomary to cuss the bride” (“customary to kiss”).
    Bye

  44. Hello marina.
My name is Sérgio and I’ve got one new word for your vocabulary. Have you watched the latest Hulk movie? Right at the beginning of it we can see the expression “Rocinha Favela”.
“Favela” is slum, or shanty town, in Portuguese. During the 1890s, in Rio de Janeiro, there was a very poor neighbourhood there called “Morro da Favela”- Favela Hill. “Favela” is the name of a typical weed in Brazil. Therefore, all the houses there were ill-built and badly assisted by the government. And that is what we still have today: huge poor neighbourhoods in all our big cities.
P.S: The word favela is now part of the Oxford University.

Being from Belgium I must say that our fries are the best ;-)
We have a ‘frituur’ at almost every other street corner, where you can buy a packet of fries and other fried things. And yes, we usually eat them with mayonnaise :)
Anyway, I propose we just call them fries.

    • foxbow15 says: 91.1

That’s true :P , you can’t go to belgium withouth seeing a so called “snackbar” or “frituur” I think they have even more than here in the Netherlands, but I don’t like belgian mayonnaise , to much vinegar.

btw Michael, do you speak dutch or french?

  48. cirap says: 90

In Sweden we just call them “Strips” (obviously derived from “Stripes”, which is what they look like). Anyways, I’d like to see Marina’s explanation for “Fuzzy”. that’s a funny word

  57. Hi Marina,

Not sure whether this one would be allowed on your show. However, it is a common term used among men in the UK.

It seems if something is really good and recommended it is referred to as “The Dog’s Boll*cks” .(replace the * with O).Does it go back to the days when Dog Fighting was common and the strongest dog being recommended?Hope I haven’t offended anyone nevertheless,I am so curious.

I love your show and I have always been fascinated by where these words come from.

    Thanks again.

  58. Here’s one. Which word has the most double letters in it? eg. skIIng, leTTer, spOOn….

  59. Hi Marina

I have a requests I live in Nottingham UK (Land of Robin Hood) I would really like to know why the local people from Nottingham refer to people as “Duck”.Has it got anything to do with the Goose Fair?Which is one of the biggest and oldest fairs in Europe.

Thank you verry much (in advance)!

  61. James says: 77

McD fries contain no potatoes they are just flour and other bits.. Also “milkshakes” are officially “thickshakes” due to them containing no milk whatsoever. They are actually 70% pork fat, ever had your straw clogged?

Source: Teacher went on food training course, found out there.

  62. lostinhere says: 76

I think Rally’s makes the best french fries.

  63. hi Marina- Brand new to your website and I love it already. Don’t know if you take requests from “the new guy” but here goes. I was playing a board game the other dy and was wondering where the title came from. It was Monopoly. I know Mono means 1, but where does poly come from. Thanks

  64. oyglavin says: 74

Hey Marina– I’m wondering how the expression ’smitten’ came about as an expression for being really interested in someone. Doesn’t smitten mean you have been smited (as in agonize, anguish, curse, excruciate)??? How could such a ‘cute’ expression of love and affection come from such a powerful evil word?

  65. pagedoll says: 73

Marina, How did “pooped or “pooped out” come to mean tired or exhausted :???:

  66. I just ate a whole bunch of french fries, and I’d love to know where the word ” F L A T U L E N C E ” came from.

  67. Also i was watching Eurotrip last nite and Vinny Jones plays an English football fan sumtime in the movie he calls this guy a “tosser” do u no wat it means?

  68. Hey mw and some of my friends were talkin and we were wondering why do sum people call cocaine “blow” can you help me out?

  69. senior says: 68

I have eaten fried potatoes in Holland on the Zider Sea. They were pretty good but they are served with mayo. But I must admit that the best “french fries” that I have eaten were found in Paris as served with entrecote (sp) a thinly cut steak with a nice brown sauce. When I visited Belgium I don’t remember eating fried potatoes. The Germans also serve good fried potatoes. Houston’s a chain of restaurants in the US also makes good french fries. Their secret is thinly cut potatoes.

  71. Well, “America’s favorite french fries” are McDonald’s. But, I know from friends that they actually add MEAT FLAVORING to their french fries and supposedly that’s why they taste better than other places. Me personally, I prefer Spangles french fries.

Marina, McDonald’s used to have great fries until they stopped presoaking them in beef broth to give them some flavor. Seems that presoaking also added a few calories and that’s a no no these days. Personally I like the curly fries you can buy in bulk at Sam’s if I don’t have time to make them from scratch. Of course the Russian way of turning potatoes into Vodka is good too.

    Back when Pearl Harbor was

    and burned many things Japanese.
Kinda like giving blood after 911.
People need a healthy outlet for
    these feelings and shared events
like those are expressions of unity.
I thought we were in REAL trouble
when I saw Clint Eastwood during
one of the 911 programs! We’re
not used to seeing Hollywood stars
    show any backbone in supporting
our country like they always did
in the old days. Bunch of preeners
    these days. Remember when
Richard Gere pissed off the NYFD’s?
He really stunk up the place…

    The best french fries? Wow!
    My homemade’s are the best.
There’s a trick to doing it right.
Wendy’s are not bad for the
    fast food variety. Dairy Queen
and Steak & Shake are also
quite edible. The best fries I
ever ate at a restaraunt had
    to be the Columbia Steakhouse
    in Lexington, Kentucky. hands down.

Try to be a little more patient

TA “Teachers Assistant” currently, Capt. Jack, actually gets to help out & assist teacher (Honourable position).
TP “Teachers Pet” a little more random, maybe even chosen out of pity. Certainly not a position of trust & in my case, my friends and family laughed at me, but the video is still up on my Favs. And I’m happy for the mention in a Hotforwords video, but i’ve been around a while so everone else be patient, Kobe is the real pet anyways.

I like Ruby Tuesday’s french fries. They have a spicy coating on the outside. Zesty brand fries at the supermarket has very good fries. But we fry all of our fries at home in peanut oil. It takes the heat better and longer.

will u please investigate for the word ” waiter : Marina ?

  101. Why hasn’t their been a teacher’s pet in a while?

  102. Miss Marina,
Just wondering if the words officer and sir are some how connected. I know sir comes from the old english word sire , but there are words that have no connection ie. MALE-FEMALE that one would think that there is one. Maybe at one time officer was spelled offisir?
    What do you think?
