wikipedia is a great source for getting info because it’s checked every 2 minutes, so if there is info in there that is not true on wikipedia, it will be soon.
Oh most definately not! Wikipedia is the last place I would go for information on anything that actually meant….well…..anything! I might go there for urban legend info or something like that, but I would definately NOT use it for a source of substantial research material. (Unless I was researching something like urban legends…or “pop culture”….)
basically i think that wikipedia isn’t the best place for information.. but on the good side most of the information is trust worthy… also this is an excellent definition of the saying spill the beans… I wouldn’t mine learning where the saying “86″ came from… this is a term we use at my job and i’ve always wondered where it came from…
its true wikipedia does not give as much info on a word or its origin as marina does i like the fact that she uses a multitude of different dictionary to describe a word and give its origin like from the latin or greek or french and old english and oxford i just read in my local telephone book word that were refuse to put in dictionary so they put them together and called it the cajun dictionary i think it mostly was a joke but there are a lot of people that did not grow up in the city whom actually use this terminology it is funny when i find my self using a few of these words
marina is that you in this picture its said to be out of focus and does not look like you and i almost agree but not sure if so what pistol are you holding
Well. Wikipedia is second hand stuff. I would imagine it might be hards because people with copyrighted stuff in books such as dictionaries or encyclopedias prob have more accurate data with the sources know. that is it for me off the top of my head.
Wikipedia is a great source for quick ‘n dirty information, and is a good start for other research because often the articles are footnoted with other sources. It’s not something to rely upon in any scholarly sense, and should be cross-checked with other sources as much as possible.
You need to spill the beans on your sister. We’e meet Kobe – very kool. We need to meet “sister” so people like me don’t think that it’s really you being edited with that fancy Final Cut Pro that you use! I use the cheaper “Toast” but I’m looking at FCP as well.
Spill the beans on your sister Marina! She’s got to be as hot as you or is you. grammer?
Cause it’s real hard to find a girl with this beauty to intelligence ratio true but………
But………sorry.
Marina is just an illusion. She is everything to everyone differently the same. My Marina is different then yours. This could be a good exercise . Each of us describe their idea of Marina.
Then have Her judge and pick to closest fit….??
There are smart and fun [ real ] people too.
My Son talks to a hundred or so Girls on MySpace from all over the world.
I’ve quoted The Buddha in a reply to Buzzword below.
Here is another quotation of his, which is relevant to Marina’s homework question about Wikipedia:-
“Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it.
Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumoured by many.
Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books.
Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders.
Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations.
But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.”
You mean the early Christians who claimed to have superior knowledge of spiritual matters, and explained the world as created by powers or agencies arising as emanations from the Godhead? It’s a term used to describe the diverse, syncretistic religious movement consisting of various belief systems generally united in the teaching that humans are divine souls trapped in a material world created by an imperfect spirit, the demiurge, who is frequently identified with the Abrahamic God. The demiurge may be depicted as an embodiment of evil, or in other instances as merely imperfect and as benevolent as its inadequacy permits. This demiurge exists alongside another remote and unknowable supreme being that embodies good. In order to free oneself from the inferior material world, one needs gnosis, or esoteric spiritual knowledge available to all through direct experience or knowledge (gnosis) of God. Jesus of Nazareth is identified by some Gnostic sects as an embodiment of the supreme being who became incarnate to bring gnosis to the Earth. In others he was thought to be a gnosis teacher, and yet others, nothing more than a man.
Newbies….
Marina does not make mistakes…… very often.
She is referring to a different book written in 1917.
check it out on the net. There is such a story ” Gullible’s Travels,” She’s not just being silly and cute-r.
You caught capman911 with this and Bob caught me with it a couple of months ago. That is a good one. I tell others about it now and I’ve caught one so far.
Wikipedia is in most cases interesting for a general starting point. The type of information I look up and the articles I have read/written/edited has a high quality. But the truth cannot be decided by voting. I’ve always been using OED and in most cases looking up encyclopedia britannica. Wikipedia is so easy to find and easy to edit. But on some topics eg. radar better articles exists.
Your appearance on the (Bill) O’Reilly Factor Show was great.
Hi Marina, Can you tell me the origin of the word Pornography ? It is usually just called porn or porno as everyone knows. And most people have looked at some and everyone knows what it is when they see it. But what is the origin or the word ” pornography ” itself ? Thank you, Ghost Legionary
…And since you raised the subject of pissing… How did the phrase ‘pissed off’ come into use. I mean, has anyone long ago really said, “I’m so mad I could piss, right now”! Or “You made me so mad I want to piss on you”! I really didn’t start to hear the phrase until I got in high school (1980 to 1984). And furthermore, doesn’t anyone remember the joking twist on the old ‘Rolaids’ commercial, “How do you spell relief? P-I-S-S” When you finally do do that you have a feeling of great relief, not anger. And even furthermore, thanks to Dr. Kegel, men and women can use the act of pissing to strengthen the pubococogeal muscles to enhance and prolong sex (I love it when a woman is strong there ). So, Marina please investigate how “… (don’t) piss me off” came into great use. I mean I could check it out on Wikipedia.com, but you’re so much more beautiful than a jigsaw globe with some pieces missing Peace, baby!
can you please do the origin of Mad Libs? its that game where you have to fill in nouns and verbs, stuff like that!! iv always wondered what it meant . THANKS ALOT!!

Ok I have a long “spill the missen beans’ but I will give you the short version. The tall ship “Endeavor” and the “Lady Washington” where in Westport Washington to do some Tall ship stuff. We (LW) where playing jokes with each other. They called us the Mini Brig, in reference of Austin Powers movies. They where sneaking aboard our ship to plant mini sails on the mast and we would put LW souvenirs on their ship. This went on for days. We wanted to have the last laugh as they would leave port. We hid bags full beans in their missen sails. Missen mast is the last mast on their type of boat. Not all tall ships have Missen masts. So this missen sail is located right over the bridge where all the driving is done. As they got underway we had one of our PR guys sail with them to the next port. He would key up the VHF radio so we could hear what was going on. As the ship got underway the captain called for them to set sails. They had all sails up except the missen sails. The captain called to let the missen sails free. Our PR guy keyed up the radio and we could hear all the beans raining down on the deck of the ship. The PR guy yelled Let free the Missen Beans! We heard this over the radio and almost died laughing so hard. Reports of beans covered the deck of the tall ship made their way to decks below. Beans everywhere! So thats my ‘Spill the Missen Beans’ story that sticks in my head the most.
Hey Marina, Did you add something new on your site about a week and a half ago, that causes the page to reposition twice. For example I post a comment and the page reloads so I can see that in fact my post is now live. I start to scroll up the page reading other comments and a few seconds later the site zaps me back down to my last comment. You know what Im talking about?
Occasionally but it comes and goes. I wanted to thank you for making me think about Wikipedia and newspaper reporting. Although I have my share of typos, having to write quickly and on deadline, I take research and accuracy seriously. I found what you wrote about your father to be very interesting because I find that no matter how balanced I try to be, presenting the facts (although I’ll give relevant personal experience, if desired by editors, experience where I’ve got paperwork or other information to prove my points) readers often have their own, very strong opinions.
In a sense, that means the reporter can be the bearer of news but interpretation will be up to the reader. I’ll bet your father dealt with this. Luckily, when it came to Marina, the consensus was that Hot for Words is a very good thing
Hi Marina, Im sitting here buying new gear for mixing one of my favorite drinks at the moment, the Mojito, but were and how did the word COCKTAIL came into the English language, and is it put together by two words – and would they be COCK and TAIL, witch has no sense at all…..?!?
i want to request an origin COCO BEAN & CHOCOLATE where did this stuff com from and why do so many people love it especially girls some say it as good as sex i want to know what can make a sweet brown substance better than sex
Cacao is native to Central America I believe. There’s an alkaloid in it which have a positive effect on pleasure centers in the brain, hence the “better than sex” attributes (plus, you don’t have to change the sheets afterward ). The Aztecs of central Mexico used cacao beans as a form of currency.
Since it’s well documented that most women love it, you can probably understand how it became popular as an exchange item, especially for guys who appreciated attention from the women.
According to one article in Nature, scientific pages in Wikipedia have four factual errors or omissions per article- not surprising. However, in the online version of the Encyclopedia Britannica a team of professionals uncovered three factual errors per article! So, when it comes to science-related articles, it seems that Wikipedia isn’t too bad a source. Also, textbooks, in an effort to be politically correct, often omit historically relevant information, such as the use of sheep bladders as prophylactics or the fact that Benjamin Franklin was an irreverent ladies’ man with a penchant for sick jokes, sometimes even aimed at royalty. Why leave out the best stuff? For shame!
which is why cross checking facts and researching a variety of resources is necessary.
of course history texts have to omit a lot of details to effectively provide a succinct documentation of historical events. how important are sheep bladder prophylactics to understanding general historical events? unless your studying a specific subject in history such as human sexuality then its not really necessary to include.
by the way, benjamin franklin making sick jokes aimed at royalty shouldn’t be too surprising, i mean he did sign the declaration of independence.
I admit it’s not surprising that Benny Franklin was disrespectful to royalty, but sheep bladder prophylactics are a very important aspect of history in that they acted as a form of birth control and may have prevented the spread of disease. Plus, my history books always had a lot of boring facts in them that really didn’t matter. It was always clear to me that they omitted certain facts and ideas out of political correctness. Heaven forbid a few parents complain!
My muscles need time to recuperate, Marina! I don’t even want to check dictionary.com for this one! I want my trusty Hotforwords to investigate for me! Woodja please (would you please)???? I need some recuperation, Marina, could you help me in my plight?

The origanal comment that got My attention was if the pic was reversed. I went and dug out My “Janes” and “Small arms of the World”. It’s not a 59. Who really cares? the pix is out of focus enough so that might not be Marina. I guess She can confirm that better than anyone else. Have a good day everybody:)

Hello Marina, I have a phrase that I would like to know about. What does the phrase “break the ice” come from and how did it come to mean to talk with somebody? Please try and do a video of this phrase. Thank you so much.

Homework: sometimes it is, depending on the material. No, not everything on Wikipedia is reliable, so it depends on who wrote it, what they know, and what their background is to actually see if what they’re saying is actually verifiable.
a word request, simple is best
I would like “the dirt” on the word dirt
all the way “back to dirt”.
Ajax is “stronger than dirt”
Bet we see more “dirty politics” and
politicians with “dirty hands” before
this election cycle is over. It’s not
a “dirty little secret” anymore.
Keepin’ my body clean and my thoughts…too!
You wanted to edit videos with quiktime?I didn’t know that was possible, try sony vegas , takes a while to understand but you can do a lot more with it that you would with Windows movie maker.
Marina… I gues you removed James his comment because he was promoting something illegal…that’s ok, but now people think i’m an idiot talking randomly abouth video editing software… :S
Marina uses Quicktime for all her videos. Apple uses QT for all their software video needs, for example Final Cut Pro uses QT. If you own a Window machine, QT is useless to you. If you want to use QT then buy a Mac.
You could also just install mac os x leopard on to a pc like I did that saves you a lot of money
But I don’t like mac ,it´s realy weird, I won’t start ranting tough cause apple groupies will jump me I think…
i don’t really get it. you’re talking about the qt player, right?
you can get qt for pc, too … so … if you want to use qt, get a mac or a pc. if you want all other video files to play, get a pc. hehe.
What great about Mac and Windows that it gives users a choice of OS they prefer or works best for them I prefer Mac over MS. Yet I told my sister to buy a Dell because of her needs at the time. I will not argue which OS I better. That’s just childish behavior.
Foxbow, If you don’t like OSX why did you install it? For your need you clearly need a Windows machine. Stay away from OSX.
aLx, No, Im talking about the QT drivers that power the apps in OSX. Im not talking about the player. This is really a mute point if your on a WinPC.
Watch out how you talk about her plants. Errin chided us on the last lesson about commenting about Miss M’s plant. So I chided back that is was all in fun and games an we were just picking at Marina about her plants and candle she has from time to time. I am still going to pick about the plant.
it’s funny she moved over to grass now ,instead of flower like plants:P
I can’t keep that spot next to my bed that tidy:p it stacks up with books and magazines in no time lol
Nicely done Im a Fan now. Your funny and wise. so I thought I’d ask you this. Where does the phrase “Kick the bucket” come from? why do I hear it ever so often? I know what it means but whats the story behind the phrase?
Because I thought it was good at editing now I want wmm Back and it keeps saying xvidcore.dll Not found and if I press ok everything messes up… Its awful
I hate them all! They all suck. I can get VLC to work most of the time. I also have Mplayer which works much better for me than VLC. I just use them all until I find something that works then I move on. I have a Mac which uses QT on most of their software. If you use Windows you really don’t need QT because Microsoft has their competing video format. Until the industry agrees on a standard of making videos we will be suck in this format war forever.
no, if you use windows you don’t need quicktime not because ms has their own format, but because there are hundreds of players out there that will play every format, including that totally superfluous *.mov format of apple.
“Spill the beans” sounds much like “loose lips sink ships” without the military inferrance I spose.
Hot damn!! You in sexy garb with a gun!! I might have the next poll question for Your website-”Would You like to see Marina teamed with Angelina in the next Tomb Raider movie?” I *KNOW*,without doubt,I would!
Dunno Bob.Maybe colored contacts would do the trick?! I remember this sweet brown eyed blonde doing naked cartwheels across the livingroom floor, quite the sight wether looking in Her eyes or not,,yummy!
Umm,since when would Marina *need* brown eyes to team with AJ and kill everything in sight? The only question in My mind is “Could/would AJ like the competition of co-starring with Marina”?!?!
If you look in some of here earlier videos some of the shots look like she has brown eyes. I don’t think the lady in the still shot is Marina. Her checks are a lot more fuller where Marina’s are concaved.
My point was that I’m not convinced that is Marina holding the gun in the video.
The girl has brown eyes and the face proportions don’t seem quite right, though it’s difficult to tell due to the angle of the shot.
Maybe she just reversed the image again. Can any gun experts tell if it’s been reversed?
Oh,ooops. You may well be correct now that I pause it and look longer. Do Ya spose the lookalike is Marinas famed “twin” only not identical?
I think most semi-auto pistols have the spent shell ejection port on the right side wich would mean the pic is unaltered, that is,if I understand correctly and if it is a real gun in the still. I have only owned 1 semi-auto pistol and am far from expert on all guns.
Actually, Bob, that’s not too far from the truth if one considers the fact that the prehistoric remnants of the body of water that once covered the bulk of what is now the south-central North American continent including the entire Mississippi river basin, the present Colorado Plateau, and the Great Plains now include Pyramid Lake in Nevada and the Great Salt Lake in Utah. That ocean was the source of all the sedimentary strata through which the Colorado River has since carved the Grand Canyon. I THINK that would have to have been prior to the Laramide orogeny (uplift of the Rocky Mountains) though. So it was a few years back, geologically speaking.
So if the alleged property to which you refer is on the shore of present-day Pyramid Lake, it either means you’re really, really old and you used to surf there when it was an ocean beach or you really know your North American geomorphology! If it’s the former, I now understand why you’re so damn wise! If the latter, shut up, you young punk!
Capman’s popular myth is just that: a myth (sorry, Mike). The fault movement along the San Andreas is lateral. Both sides are sliding slowly along each other, like cars going opposite directions on a roadway (okay, make that an English roadway!). California will never “fall into the ocean,” although just like any other rugged coastline, the seacliffs along the beaches are often composed of unstable soils and marine terrane units piled high and as such they’re quite subject to weathering and erosional forces like slumps and landslides. This is especially true when earthquakes occur and shake loose sections of cliffs onto the beaches below because of the vibration, particularly when saturated and therefore lubricated and heavy with water during the rainy season.
i think wikipedia is a source, but only one, and like all sources, must be viewed with suspicion until verified by objective sources…
in my past, i wrote a couple of esoteric science journal articles; while gathering references for those publications, i gathered several hundred citations. in reviewing the publications, one can often find the author(s)’s biases creeping in – foregone conclusions, faulty reasoning, illogical conclusions…basically making the science, which should be pure & objective, non-objective…
so view ALL sources with skepticism…including, of course, me…(-;
wikipedia is good it got me trough highschool But one time I got a 1(lowest you can get ranking form 1 to 10) for some science class , because the teacher found out I used wikipedia to collect info:P lol, even tough I got a 9 on my diploma for that subject
There’s actualy is a video on yt in which a friend of mine pronounches my name in the dutch , but im not gonna post it here cause I made a fool out of myself in that one

never ever rely on wikipedia articles.
aLx replied on May 4th, 2008 3:07 am:
because a lot of them provide false / not enough / biased / subjective information.
one of my linguistics profs once said, “if you use wikipedia, only use it to correct articles. never use it to look something up. most of it is hair-raising.”

check out wikipedia’s article on “word”. this is crap. totally worthless, misleading crap.
This statement is totally worthless, misleading crap.
It is not helpful and contributes nothing to any readers knowledge or understanding. (The worthless part)
It is an assertion, based on an opinion and gives the impression that the writer is a self-opinionated bigot. (The misleading part – possibly )
It may well be correct, but the reader has no information to make a judgement about it.
All that the reader can do is to go to the wikipedia article cited, where they will see references to well respected sources, namely the Oxford English Dictionary and The Cambridge Encyclopaedia of the English Language, among others, and conclude that aLx is saying that everything in those sources is “crap”.
aLx. rewrite your post, explaining what you believe is wrong and why, using reasoned arguments and, if you feel it will help to clarify your points, include large, clearly labelled diagrams.
Also give references to respected sources to back up your assertions, and, if you have already posted your reasoned arguments on this web site, include links to those posts.
i’m not gonna rewrite my post, and i’m sure as hell not going to read that fucking article again. i’ll just copy the rest of the comment which focuses on wikipedia’s article on “sentence”.

even worse is the article on “sentence”:
A simple complete sentence consists of a subject and a predicate.
it does not say if the subject is a grammatical or a logical one. that is, the distinction between a logical and a grammatical subject is not even mentioned. this distinction can be important when analyzing a sentence — consider subject-to-subject raising constructions[1] or even ECM which can be analyzed as subject-to-object raising constructions[2].
at the end of the article it is briefly mentioned that there are indeed sentences that do not follow the “rule” or “definition” above:
However, a minor sentence is an irregular type of sentence. It does not contain a finite verb. For example, “Mary!”, “Yes.” [...].
now, why are those sentences “irregular” sentences? no, they’re not irregular sentences, they just _are_ sentences. and, true, they do not contain a finite verb. “yes.” as a sentence, however, does not contain a subject either.
“does not contain a finite verb” sort of implies that only the finite verb is missing, not the subject. what about “mary!”? is “mary” a subject?
how about “look at that!”? this is a sentence containing a finite verb, but no (overt) subject.
(you may argue that a command is directed to one or more other people so the subject would most likely be you[+sing] or you[+pl] and that there is an arbitrary PRO, like in sentences with subject or object control[3], or that imperatives work like sentences in pro-drop languages like italian, though the subject there can be overt[4].)
[1] [he° seems [ t° to sleep]]., from: [e seems [he to sleep]].
[2] [he heard her° [ t° coming]].
[3] [I ordered mary° [PRO° to kill her mother]].
[4] [(io) parlo].

now, i don’t know if the article has been changed since i posted that comment. and, frankly, i don’t care. wikipedia is not a reliable source for scientific information.
we have a well known lexicon of linguistics over here. you’ll find it at universities, and philology students use it as a source. however, by our linguistics profs we were told not to use it. there are too many mistakes in it. to quote a prof: “this is because it’s written by a philologist, not a linguist.”
Thank you aLx,
That was, at least, more informative than your original rant, for which I took you to task. However, I suspect it may have gone over the heads of many readers because of the use of jargon. I’ll leave it to them to ask for further clarification if they need it.
One point I would like to ask about – you have mentioned above, as well as in earlier posts, that you were told certain things “by our linguistics profs” which you appear to accept as gospel.
Have you ever considered that the statements of those professors may have been coloured by personal bias?
“this is because it’s written by a philologist, not a linguist.”
Might that statement possibly indicate or suggest an intellectual snobbery about philologists, who the prof. regards as a lower life form than a linguist?
no, i do not accept it as a gospel, there are indeed things i didn’t agree with.
my favorite linguistics prof didn’t study (general) linguistics, she’s actually a philologist. she’s an exception, though.
anyway, i quoted the prof because i don’t really want to get that lexicon, look for something that i can easily explain, translate it into english, and then get into details as to why this entry is not correct. hope you understand that.
you’re right, however, in assuming a potential snobbery, that’s pretty common among scholars. it’s something i don’t like but one can pretty easily discriminate between snobbery and “okay, he knows what he’s talking about, i see his point, i can’t find any arguments that could challenge his point but i can find arguments to rule out the point made by the other one.”
As I have told you before Alx your not F**Ked up according to you’r personal site. I believe in what you have to say and understand it. It might go over some peoples head, but if they study it long enough they will see you make a very good statement in defense. So keep on with the comments.
Mike
sometimes there are real differences between academic disciplines. in our anthropology department we shared linguistic classes with students from other majors. the linguists were always really serious researchers dedicated to scholarly principals and scientific methodology. but the philologists tended to be attractive blonde female literature majors who double majored in linguistics. perhaps to add some credibility to an otherwise recreational degree. now i can’t say if they where intelligent or not, i never really paid attention to what they had to say, but they were sexy.
while working at starbucks i’ve since met a few of them, they make more money than me. they also seem to be happier as well. but i expect that their happiness is a result of receiving an inadequate education and not understanding their situation deeply enough to be suffering from chronic depression like myself. i really pity them.
I love watching you. you make me smile every time and learn simething new as well. and Wikapedia is not a good source. i have found it o be wrong on a few occasions and it is not specific enough most of the time.
Sasha
By the way ! There will be a healthy competition between WIKIPEDIA and GOOGLE’s http://knol.google.com/k# .It’s just a question of time.
If some among you are interested in French etymology, I already wrote some articles but for sure with many mistakes because my English is far from being good. Please read it and correct the mistakes for me if you have some free time. It’s there : http://knol.google.com/k/patrick-jouanns/the-french-surname-chambon-in-france/300f259vefz5s/2#
I think WIKIPEDIA is a good source but you have always to think twice consulting this source. Anyway it’s true for everything. If something is said or written it does’nt mean that it’s true. Every person, every researcher, even the cleverest can emit false opinion or false results but working together and sharing our common knowledge is a big source of wisdom. Anyway nothing must be admitted as definitively true. That is called the LAW OF PROGRESS.
Hey Labbatt78, I like you UTube site especially SweetnessChrissy site. Did you notice what kind of bikini she had on. It was a strawberry bikini. You should have posted that on strawberry video day.
CAJUN is a deformation of ACADIAN “people from Acadia”. ACADIA was the ancient name of the western part of CANADA from where the French speaking population was expelled by the English after the loss of this French Colony (about 1770). The Acadians settled down in Louisiana that was still French until 1802.
Bloody Brits !
I think it really depends on the subject which you are looking up. If you are looking for something like; origins, historical events, anything scientific, and so on, then it’s not that reliable. If you are looking up something on a show you watch, or a comic book or novel you read, then it’s usually pretty accurate.
hello marina good video5^ you are so interesting on how you teach things i heard that spill the beans all so came from the mafia people would say spill his beans or spill his gut out before he spills his guts out on us that sister of yours has a big mouth she is such a snitch maybe you should make her skedaddle could you investigate the word skedaddle THANK YOU MARINA
The US is gathering as many Black & White beans as they can, to send to Florida before the next election, to avoid a repeat of 2000… according to inside “Wiki” sources.
Oh I busted a gut on Marina’s outtakes. This is a classic example of lips moving faster than the mind.
The Wikipedia can be 100% trusted unless otherwise noted (i.e. lack of sources). I also recommend it because many people are allowed to contribute to its works. Is it always accurate? No, but you can get an idea of its accuracy just by seeing and verifying its sources.
Also I believe that general information should be free to the masses. Which Wikipedia is. Unlike Oxford University Press that uses archaic business models. Oxford University Press charges $300 for access just for its online version. Companies that support this archaic business model support the ignorance of society. If the information that Oxford University Press where more accessible then the accuracy of Wiki would be better. I don’t know of any other publication that has as much as the OED contains.
Can I trust the OED to be accurate? I don’t know. I never had an opportunity to check their sources.
In contrast to the above business model, I give most of my information away for free online. Someday I hope to offer video lesson for free . How do I make any money you say? I charge $1,200 dollars to sit in my classroom. This is where I explain all the free boating knowledge in a classroom environment where you can ask questions. For some people a structured classroom environment it best. I trust the information I teach because Im always researching the data. I can source everything.
I’ve lost a few to coco, but I don’t let them take it away anymore. If it posts too slow, on the right is an override, click it to post & I think it avoids cocomment altogether.
I didn’t copy either, my best work ends up in the trash
Ok, Did any of you lazy bums try to research out our dear teacher claim? Go and look at Wiki ‘Spill the beans’ and tell me what you find.
Now don’t get the wrong idea that Im attacking sweet Marina. Miss M know more about words than I’ll ever learn in two of my life times. But one should not take all facts in anyones website for granted. Do your research and verify what you learn. Yes its true you could spend the rest of your life just trying to verify one fact. Just be aware that if you haven’t verified the facts you can not be 100% sure.
ref: look at Wiki ‘Spill the beans’
Did you mean where Wiki references the Randomhouse “Word of the Day”, which references the OED which references “Gullible’s Travels”. The chain of custody is complete affirming our lovely teacher’s claim.
Ok someone just updated it and removed what I was commenting about. Damn I should have locked it. There was a reference that the story (the bean jar) was not verifiable. Proving what Marina was teaching.
Ha!!! Thanks to Google the old post was still in the cachecache.
Spill the beans
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This article is orphaned as few or no other articles link to it.
Please help introduce links in articles on related topics. (November 2006)
The phrase Spill the Beans means to reveal a secret, usually accidentally. It also implies that the revealed secret ruins a surprise or plan of some sort.
A contemporary example would be “come on Jesse spill the beans about you know who”. This phrase may also be accompanied by a threat such as “…or i’ll ask her directly”.
The origin of Spill the Beans is not clear, although the word ’spill’ can be used alone or with other words to mean the same thing, as in ’spill your guts’.
A popular belief as to the origin of the phrase dates back to ancient Greece, when existing members of secret societies voted upon applicants by placing either a black bean or a white bean in a jar. If the jar was knocked over before the conclusion of the ceremony, the results would be prematurely revealed. This theory is not possible, however, as the phrase dates back only to the early part of the twentieth century in the United States.[citation needed]
Thanks Ped. I was feeling like a fool… I had written my post about 5 hours ago and was pulled away to rescue some boaters. By the time I got back the Wiki had been changed.
Well at least it has been corrected and someone did go and visit the page. Thanks for referring me to check the history. I don’t get into Wiki that much. I just need to ref the info and get back to work. I don’t have time to play with wiki.
As you know, I write. When I was researching my article on you, I did not trust only Wikipedia However, Wikipedia can have external links that can provide even more reliable information. So it can be one way to gain information but I would never use it as a main source. I would want to have reference which I could back up. Direct references are the best.
For example, if I write, “My son has learned 50 new words since watching Marinas’s videos in Hot for Words and remembers their meaning” that is personal observation and more verifiable than much of the information in Wikipedia. If I also note that his friends are very impressed by your saying something about it, that can also be proven He is spreading the news about Hot for Words to the younger generation.
Ok but I would like to verify your information that your son has learned 50 new lessons. Do you have any proof of your claim other than your observations? All I can type up a story to let people that I know the mother of this boy who learned 50 new words, but I can’t prove it. The only source I have is a post on the internet that someone wrote. You see where this breaks down. You know this is a fact because you see it. If I was there to see his work, I too could say I’ve seen it with my own eyes and or ears. For you and I this would be our only proof. No one else should believe us without some sort of way to verify both our claims. Now if he where to post a video demonstrating his knowledge of these words then many more people could agree as we do that he learned the new words. This is even a problem with most books we read. Do they reference any sources so we can to see for ourselves?
It would be trying for Wikipedians to provide the same proof.
Im just rambling on my opinion of what you posted. Reply if you wish or not.
That’s fantastic he is telling his friends about HFW. Im doing the same thing!
Yes, Captain,
Actually, you are correct about that. That is why I use the words “reportedly said” or “allegedly happened” in so many developing or breaking stories, even when several different sources report the same material, because future developments can change the truth of waht appears to be happening today.
One does have to be careful about making statements. In any case, local universities will not accept papers from students who use only Wikipedia as their source material. Right or wrong, that is their stand.
My dad would use words like “reportedly said” or “allegedly happened” in his storied but they would still get him into trouble with the readers because they lack the ability to read. (Note: My dad was a newspaper reporter) Those words where either invisible or people just ignored them and would spread rumors. When those rumors where found false they would blame him for starting them. He declared that his report was unverifiable but people only believe what they want to believe or they just don’t read properly. He later would only report facts and sometimes used the word ‘unconfirmed’ or ‘rumor’ in his stories. He was always fighting the boss on this. His boss wanted more meat in the stories, regardless if it was true or not.
Hi Jack, How are you today lulling around for the weekend. I hope you don’t mind, but I assisted for you on two occasions while you were gone. Nothing big just helping out a disgruntled member and referring one to another member for clarification of a problem. Plus being assist to the assistant door greeter. I see why you like it so much, being able to help members before matters escalate. It makes you feel all good inside when they come back and thank you for helping them. Rest today for it’s back to the ole grind stone tomorrow.
Thanks Capman. Lulling around? heheh working my butt off. But at a leisure type pace. Thanks for your help. I can’t be here 24/7. Yes its very rewarding.
Hi mom how are you. I left you a comment on the smart pen you wrote about on your site. I called you mom there and asked for one for my birthday since you were giving them out to family members for Christmas presents. I will check into that when it comes to Best By.
I went to Marina’s site and come back to here to give her the credit. Have a good day Mrs J.

jcr, it is the policy of a lot of newspapers that their reporters refrain from activities that may divulge bias. such as political signs in front yards. it seems naive to assume that journalists do not have personal opinions. but with adherence to journalistic principles and peer review and conscientious editing their opinions should be isolated from the story. it it almost infringes upon the 1st amendment right. i think i would respect a journalist more if they freely participated in the democratic process and social activities and were able to report the news without significant bias or personal motives. such reporting would demonstrate the appropriate skills and methodology required of a successful professional journalist. unless your answer would reveal a bias. what is your opinion?
Hi, tried to reply, hope this one goes through. How would you suggest a reporter cover a forest fire while in the midst of it as his own home is burning down? Would not the personal experience and even bias add to the whole story? I can not help but think of those reporters who were trapped under cars, dust swirling around them, during 911. I can not help but think of the journalists shot while covering news stories in war zones or of Walter Cronkite crying while covering President Kennedy’s death, although he was as restrained as possible in his grief (under the circumstances) It is a fine line but I’m not sure it can be one that can be maintained, although I think the goal should be to report news in a balanced way and let the public come to their conclusions. I would also add that it depends on the newspaper as well. One will not get a job at certain publications without adding personal opinion or a certain slant. I’ve never worked at The National Enquirer so I can’t speak to that sort of thing.
I’d say Wiki is a good source of new information, such as releasedates for movies and games, for more historical facts, and mos timportant, for things to be used in such things as work school essays I’d say you can’t compleatly trust Wiki… You can’t trust people, hence you can’t trust Wiki (yeah negative worl weive, but it rarly leaves me suprised).
Altho Wiki is always a good reference point, if you find a more reliable source that gives the same information as Wiki you might reference to Wiki as well, so people will have an easier time to find the origional information, might not always be so easy to find them funny books in the library, even with the ISBM number (in case I’m not making sence ISPM is in Sweden the book tracking system, don’t know if it excists elsewere, but it woulden’t suprise me)
30 sec of googling later. Seeing as it seams to stand for International Stabdard Book Numbering I’d say we arn’t the only ones having it =P
Homework: Is Wikipedia a good source…?
I believe everything I read on the Internet like this one.
Time to do some updates on that article like, “… appearing twice on the The O’Reilly Factor.”
It has been said that the winners of wars wrote the history books, and eventually that information gets into closed encyclopedias without the benefit of being challenged. In Wiki, depending on the type of content, some articles contain caveats regarding controversies, references and other items of dispute.
Of course if you look up “Historical revisionism” in Wiki or elsewhere, you can really go nuts. The caveat is, everyone including me has a bias, so in the end, disagreements, if they are not about facts, will be about opinions and everyone has one. Maybe we can elect Marina to be our benevolent dictator.
I’ve had pretty good luck gathering information from Wikipedia. Not only do they “spill the bean” when you need to know something, they really “come clean, cough up, sing, drop the dime,” and “spill their guts” with accurate information.
She got me too on that one. I spent an hour & a half looking for the quote “go ahead & spill it”" in Gulliver’s Travels, written in 1726 by Jonathan Swift. Wasn’t a waste of time though, I never read the book as a youngster & didn’t realize how rebelious a book it was, back in the day. Cheers
I’ve always wondered what the origin of the term “goober” came from. When someone calls someone a “goober”, normally it means they are either silly or clumsy in some manner. For instance, Will Ferrell is a perfect example of a “goober”.
Sometimes Wiki is OK, but you have to be careful with it. Technical articles are safer than political articles. Sometimes people with bad information post to Wiki, but sometimes the information is carefully watched by experts.
Dear Teacher — Wikipedia states that “PEI” was an ancient city in Italy that became evil and was completely destroyed by exploding volcanoes. Centuries later a 2nd city named “PEI” was built over the ruins of the old. The new PEI was named “POM” explosion in Latin and PEII with two Roman numerals marking it the second PEII. Thus giving us the word “POMPEII” as reported by Wikpedia. Can HotForWords investigate so I can know if this is true or myth?
I know you believe you understand what you think she said, but you don’t seem to realise that what you heard is not what she meant.
Look again and listen faster.
Wikipedia has become a kind of global brain. But what is an encyclodepia ? Isn’t it a kind of merge of knowledges ?
The main thing that differs is the control of those informations .Wasn’t some informations occulted by a kind of censure in encyclopedia ?
Wikipedia (and mainly all the communication media) is a profound revolution. Nowadays as we have lots of sources of informations. We have to check them to make them reliable.
So, don’t trust and consume what is wrote on the Internet but use it to get smarter !
Wikipedia is a TERRIBLE source for information since, as you said Marina, anyone can say anything on Wikipedia. They have had several serious problems, the least of which was that in 2007 “EssJay”, a Wikipedia editor and one of their “experts” was exposed as a fraud. http://technology.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/tech_and_web/article1480012.ece
Wikipedia is useless as a valid reference tool.
Wikipedia comes in handy as no need to purchase those old style book encyclopedias anymore. Its can be helpful in learning the basics such as “Marina is a female given name of Eastern European origin.”
BTW – What happened to those poor encyclopedia sales people? Did they just die off or would you say kicked the bucket. Now that idiom might be a good one to research
Could you please do the word “booking”. Not as in knocking people’s book over in the hallways but “booking” as in when someone goes all out or puts all there energy in something such as running. My friends and I always say it but when I thought about it and i realized it doesn’t make much sense. I just realized “booking” as in booking a flight doesn’t make much sense either.
I think this term originated in the 60’s, or at least that’s when I first heard it. It was used as a short form of “boogy,” which probably derives from the musical term “boogy-woogy.” The boogy-woogy is a sped-up form of the standard 12-bar blues 1-4-5 format. So it’s usage in common parlance inferred that there was a sudden need to hurry or speed up a process, as in “Well, I gotta boogy now or I’ll miss the bus,” indicating accelerated motion. “That car was really boogyin’ down the street!” By the late 60’s, the last syllable got dropped and the common usage became “book.” As for me, I gotta book now or I won’t get my homework done.
unusual would be a good one, yesterday i kept saying unusual to my friends and then i thought omg where does that word come from?
i think that you are the only person i can trust with this bye Marina.
Alright, I never usually comment on the lessons themselves, nor do I ascribe stars; but I think this one is hot, smart, sharp & dimensional. (HwK) Wikipedia can be a good jogger of the noggin but it’s not a substantiated ‘source’ always. Again, for my $.02 put rocket fuel (littl’ pricy) into that engine & get some altitude because you can pull it off & it’s interesting as sing…Get mad. Make videos like they are the last ones, make a lesson like you’ve just lit a fuse & something’s about to go Bang! Then along with high view numbers they would also have to carve HotForWords into stone…Umm, but, also, you’re not suppose to care about what others say, Wiki. etc….remember?
I thought “spill the beans” was the expression to describe when a pick-up truck full of Mexicans rolled over. Just kidding, I am part Mexican you know.
About thirty seconds into this vid. my heart stopped & I sat upright in the chair… ‘Thought I was being called by teacher. “Spill the beans” sounds so much like… well see if you can figure it out.
Since you’re on strike & all, being a little pissy about TP. I thought you might enjoy an old episode where someone is teachers pet & since you don’t care who is the TP, you just enjoy the outfits. enjoy
“I’m not sure if I fired five or six shots, but since this is a .357 magnum, and will blow your head clean off, you’ve got ask yourself this; do I feel lucky?” – Dirty Harry, Magnum Force
Ya Ya – I’m late. I had to look at the
video twice. Some things went by
pretty quick…Like…
Gullible Travels???!!
Wassup widdat?
Now I wonder – WTF?
What is real about this lesson??
Did Marina (or ersatz sister)
make up the whole lesson?
Was there homework?
Oh yeah – wikipedia
they put a disclaimer right on
the page, and some pages
acknowledge they need a
better explanation by those
in that field of endeavor.
I don’t usually rely on them
as a source. I have used
it here as a link post.
They pop up in the top
three on a Google search
for most keywords i enter.
Basically, it is what it is.
So, is Marina serious about
Gullible’s Travels or is she
playing my “fishing” game?
I’m not sure if I fired five or six shots, but since this is a “.357″ magnum, and will blow your head clean off, you’ve got ask yourself this; do I feel lucky?” – Dirty Harry, Magnum Force
Cha Cha it was a 44 magnum. Then he was shooting in the woods with a 44 magnum auto mag.
Dear Marina, I rated your video five stars. About your homework, I use Wikipedia often. For example, they had good articles on the Russian alphabet, Russian foods, and much about Russian history. I rated your video five stars because you spoke clearly and distinctly from great scriptwriting, you kept good eye contact with the camera, had excellent use of sound effects, music, voice-overs, still photos, video clips and captions. Plus, you show bloopers at the end.
It’s all amazing because you are doing it in a foreign language to you. I got excellent grades in German and French, but I can’t produce a video nearly as good in those languages. You are truly talented, intelligent, and beautiful.
From yesterday’s video on French fries, I found that the Russian word for potato is картошка (or kartomka). If you have many potatoes, they are called картошки (or kartomky). So one squirrel is a белка (belka), and many squirrels are called белки (belky). And yes, one bean is фасоль. Many beans are фасоли.
My question for today is what kind of pistol are you carrying in that photo? Is it a Smith and Wesson 9mm? And didn’t the FSB issue you a Tokarev?
Your dear student, seesixcm6
I’m no Russian expert, but the word you wrote in Russian looks to me like it should be pronounced kartoshka and kartoshky. Am I wrong? The sixth letter in pronounced ’sh’
Good Morning, and thank you for the help. You’re right about the pronunciation. I’d better stop showing off knowledge of Russian (or my lack thereof), since I hardly know their alphabet, yet. I’ve sent for a textbook and Russian-English dictionary, so I hope to understand the occasional lesson Marina does in Russian, someday. I’m in no position to answer melikadothechacha’s question. I hope we get help from the many people on these boards who actually know Russian? seesixcm6
Your welcome. I have been learning to at http://www.byki.com It makes learning really quick. It only took me about 5 hours total to learn how to read, even though I don’t know the meaning of most of the words I am reading yet. Now I write everything down using the Cyrillic just to stay in practice. I learned the Cyrillic at a different sight, but there are a lot of them online. get one that has sound so you can hear how it is supposed to be pronounced.
First we got the strawberries, then the chips and beans.
Any guesses as to what will be next? Sausages and eggs? Hamburghers and Frankfurters? Or will we go straight on to the Hors d’Œuvres?

you are my only source !
wikipedia is a great source for getting info because it’s checked every 2 minutes, so if there is info in there that is not true on wikipedia, it will be soon.
Wikipedia is an awesome reference but like anything, balance that against the credibility of the author.
It’s organic, so if it’s wrong, fix it – that’s how it gets better. Strange, there’s no article for “spill the beans” any more.
It took a swift eye to read Gullible’s Travels, and a keen eye to see that it’s not the book you’d immediately assume it was.
Oh most definately not! Wikipedia is the last place I would go for information on anything that actually meant….well…..anything! I might go there for urban legend info or something like that, but I would definately NOT use it for a source of substantial research material. (Unless I was researching something like urban legends…or “pop culture”….)
lol you and wikipedia are both well suited… both are crap for information.
good day!
basically i think that wikipedia isn’t the best place for information.. but on the good side most of the information is trust worthy… also this is an excellent definition of the saying spill the beans… I wouldn’t mine learning where the saying “86″ came from… this is a term we use at my job and i’ve always wondered where it came from…
thanks

its true wikipedia does not give as much info on a word or its origin as marina does i like the fact that she uses a multitude of different dictionary to describe a word and give its origin like from the latin or greek or french and old english and oxford i just read in my local telephone book word that were refuse to put in dictionary so they put them together and called it the cajun dictionary i think it mostly was a joke but there are a lot of people that did not grow up in the city whom actually use this terminology it is funny when i find my self using a few of these words
marina is that you in this picture its said to be out of focus and does not look like you and i almost agree but not sure if so what pistol are you holding
Your sister was giving you GUFF. good word for orgin. sounds like excellent timing
Well. Wikipedia is second hand stuff. I would imagine it might be hards because people with copyrighted stuff in books such as dictionaries or encyclopedias prob have more accurate data with the sources know. that is it for me off the top of my head.
hey can u do the word hamburger. I was wondering why it’s called hamburger if most of the common burgers don’t have ham in them?
Homework:
Wikipedia is a great source for quick ‘n dirty information, and is a good start for other research because often the articles are footnoted with other sources. It’s not something to rely upon in any scholarly sense, and should be cross-checked with other sources as much as possible.
Marina:
I have found Wikipedia to be very unreliable information source in my researches.
It is not a good reference resouce.
Marina
You need to spill the beans on your sister. We’e meet Kobe – very kool. We need to meet “sister” so people like me don’t think that it’s really you being edited with that fancy Final Cut Pro that you use! I use the cheaper “Toast” but I’m looking at FCP as well.
Spill the beans on your sister Marina! She’s got to be as hot as you or is you. grammer?
Spill the beans! Spill the beans!
Hahaha – “Gullible’s Travels” indeed!!!
I would like to know where the phrase “Dust Bunnies” came from.
I have a word request.
Why do people call Gifts, Presents?
Perhaps it’s because they are presenting a gift? I have no idea. That’s a good on for HfW.

Marina is just an illusion. She is everything to everyone differently the same. My Marina is different then yours. This could be a good exercise . Each of us describe their idea of Marina.
Then have Her judge and pick to closest fit….??
There are smart and fun [ real ] people too.

total kidding James your own videos look good on boobtube too.
have you met lisanova yet? She likes to help out nOObs too.
Stalker??? I am refreshing so much to try and get number 1. I have seen lisa nova before but.. hmm
– Gautama Siddharta, 563-483 B.C.
am i supposed to believe that?…
The answer to that is the last sentence in the quote.
Bob
What do you think of Gnosticism as a religion or a psychology?
Philosophy… did you mean?
Never heard of it!
Guess that makes me an agnostic.
It’s as good as any other religion, I suppose.
Jonathan Swift – Gulliver’s Travels – (from the Home Page) should be the correct spelling.
This has been mentioned allready, read Marina’s post bellow .

Newbies….
Marina does not make mistakes…… very often.
She is referring to a different book written in 1917.
check it out on the net. There is such a story ” Gullible’s Travels,” She’s not just being silly and cute-r.
Did you know that “gullible” is the only English word that can’t be found in any English dictionary?
did you know i heard that before?
and i came so close to believing you…
not.
You caught capman911 with this and Bob caught me with it a couple of months ago. That is a good one. I tell others about it now and I’ve caught one so far.
I got a word for you.
“Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis”
Pronounced: Pneumono-Ultra-Microscropic-Silico-Volcano-Con-Eye-Osis
It is said that this word is coined to be the longest word.
I just wonder, what it stems from and if It has anything to do with Pneumonia

Wikipedia is in most cases interesting for a general starting point. The type of information I look up and the articles I have read/written/edited has a high quality. But the truth cannot be decided by voting. I’ve always been using OED and in most cases looking up encyclopedia britannica. Wikipedia is so easy to find and easy to edit. But on some topics eg. radar better articles exists.
Your appearance on the (Bill) O’Reilly Factor Show was great.
Marina you are the best.
Numbskull I would like to learn about it
Vid is #22.. Don’t event think about it wt5

When you finally do do that you have a feeling of great relief, not anger. And even furthermore, thanks to Dr. Kegel, men and women can use the act of pissing to strengthen the pubococogeal muscles to enhance and prolong sex (I love it when a woman is strong there
). So, Marina please investigate how “… (don’t) piss me off” came into great use. I mean I could check it out on Wikipedia.com, but you’re so much more beautiful than a jigsaw globe with some pieces missing
Peace, baby!
couldn’t you leave out your piss fantasies …..

Hahahahahaha! Prank up, I mean crank up that capstan!
I hope they were “navy” beans!
Great story!
Does anyone else here experience this also?
Yes the same thing here too.
Marina is likely out, maybe the beach or shopping.
So it’s your job to get to the bottom of this…..
Its time for video up load. So who is going to do it?
She can’t do that
People will be murdering each other on here!!!
Yes.
I know what you are talking about:
Think it’s a CONSPIRATION
Captjack
I gave it some thought and I believe it’s the adds loading slower then the rest of the page………..?
I thought it was just my computer messing up again.
Mine also does it on the utube channel also.
What translator are you using there capman911?

Hi Marina, Im sitting here buying new gear for mixing one of my favorite drinks at the moment, the Mojito, but were and how did the word COCKTAIL came into the English language, and is it put together by two words – and would they be COCK and TAIL, witch has no sense at all…..?!?
Comon sense proves this to be false……
i want to request an origin COCO BEAN & CHOCOLATE where did this stuff com from and why do so many people love it especially girls some say it as good as sex i want to know what can make a sweet brown substance better than sex
Cacao is native to Central America I believe. There’s an alkaloid in it which have a positive effect on pleasure centers in the brain, hence the “better than sex” attributes (plus, you don’t have to change the sheets afterward
). The Aztecs of central Mexico used cacao beans as a form of currency.
Since it’s well documented that most women love it, you can probably understand how it became popular as an exchange item, especially for guys who appreciated attention from the women.
Maybe they are just better cooks then Lovers?
no i do not beleive so
Oh god. Computer messed up, Reinstalled Vista, all seems to be working now
Completed so far
Checked emails
Installed Firefox
Set Marina as desktop background
Still to do:
Put all files on
Install everything else
I have strange priority orders…
not as strange as the need to share those priorities with the rest of us.
Except, aLx, of course!
What are you thinking
Checking your email before adding Marina to your desk top?
Here’s the source: http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/2005-12-14-nature-wiki_x.htm
I need some recuperation, Marina, could you help me in my plight?
recuperating,

Hello Marina, I have a phrase that I would like to know about. What does the phrase “break the ice” come from and how did it come to mean to talk with somebody? Please try and do a video of this phrase. Thank you so much.

Homework: sometimes it is, depending on the material. No, not everything on Wikipedia is reliable, so it depends on who wrote it, what they know, and what their background is to actually see if what they’re saying is actually verifiable.

When someone says “Let’s blow this popsicle stand”
What does that mean?
I am wondering about the word, “nincompoop”. Sounds Russian.
I dont usually trust wikipedia unless I have another source to go on.
Hello,
I saw your “wop” video and this is why my word request is “padman”
take care, ENTE
a phrase request flim-flam the flimflam man
a word request, simple is best
I would like “the dirt” on the word dirt
all the way “back to dirt”.
Ajax is “stronger than dirt”
Bet we see more “dirty politics” and
politicians with “dirty hands” before
this election cycle is over. It’s not
a “dirty little secret” anymore.
Keepin’ my body clean and my thoughts…too!
not to mention some of the politicians are “older than dirt”
Amen to that Smokey
I have used wikipedia in the past (and still do sometimes). It’s not a bad site if you’re looking for small bits of trivia.
Information-wise, wikipedia could probably be described as “Some info about everything, but not all info about something”.
where does “tickled pink” come from?
my word is tickle*
my word is ticke
All i can trust is you, Marina! Love your lessons.
I missed that one about James foxbow, can you fill me in on my utube site?
Marina uses Quicktime for all her videos. Apple uses QT for all their software video needs, for example Final Cut Pro uses QT. If you own a Window machine, QT is useless to you. If you want to use QT then buy a Mac.
You could also just install mac os x leopard on to a pc like I did
that saves you a lot of money
I installed mac cause so many people said it was great
I think it’s just fancy and……………..useless
LOL , you got one of those weird curly bamboo plants now
Watch out how you talk about her plants. Errin chided us on the last lesson about commenting about Miss M’s plant. So I chided back that is was all in fun and games an we were just picking at Marina about her plants and candle she has from time to time. I am still going to pick about the plant.
Wy would you want quiktime…? VLC is way better.
Because I thought it was good at editing now I want wmm Back and it keeps saying xvidcore.dll Not found and if I press ok everything messes up… Its awful
lol. hahahahaha. quicktime. fucking apple crap. ;D
I don’t understand Quick time either. I have it down loaded but don’t use it.
Until the industry agrees on a standard of making videos we will be suck in this format war forever.
no, if you use windows you don’t need quicktime not because ms has their own format, but because there are hundreds of players out there that will play every format, including that totally superfluous *.mov format of apple.
get a pc.;)
I still need to find a format that vlc can’t play…

Wikipedia will do in a pinch.
Since when has Marina had brown eyes?
Bingo! Capman said it!
“I don’t think the lady in the still shot is Marina. ”
Looks more like Britany Spears…

Word Raider : The Adventures Of HotForWords
Now Yer talkin! I like the way You think.
All information is true untill proven false…….
I have some very desirable ocean-front property in Nevada for sale.
Send the money NOW before it is all snapped up.
You may joke Bob, but if the big earthquake hits you’ll have some expensive land next to the ocean.
-A. Fossil
If that happens it’ll be San Adreas Fault ( BTW verified the spelling on WIkipedia )
common sense or slight knowledge of geography proves your comment false…….yes?
I live by just the opposite thinking.
Believe nothing you hear.and 1/2 of what you see.

i think wikipedia is a source, but only one, and like all sources, must be viewed with suspicion until verified by objective sources…
in my past, i wrote a couple of esoteric science journal articles; while gathering references for those publications, i gathered several hundred citations. in reviewing the publications, one can often find the author(s)’s biases creeping in – foregone conclusions, faulty reasoning, illogical conclusions…basically making the science, which should be pure & objective, non-objective…
so view ALL sources with skepticism…including, of course, me…(-;
annudder
wikipedia is good
it got me trough highschool
But one time I got a 1(lowest you can get ranking form 1 to 10) for some science class , because the teacher found out I used wikipedia to collect info:P lol, even tough I got a 9 on my diploma for that subject
I am going to take a stab at your name is pronounced like Jewell
noooooooo
There’s actualy is a video on yt in which a friend of mine pronounches my name in the dutch , but im not gonna post it here cause I made a fool out of myself in that one
Ok no more guesses. You said it would take 20 or so before someone said it right. So I’ll not waste anymore of your time on trying to guess.
Dutch-tv has a series of documentaries. They also have a documentary about wikipedia. Which is also available in English:

check out wikipedia’s article on “word”. this is crap. totally worthless, misleading crap.
even worse is the article on “sentence”[...]
Are they so grossly inept that any wanker with an agenda can plant poop in there to undermine the meaning of known truths??
Who runs it?? maketheworldstupid.org??
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/word did you try here?
This statement is totally worthless, misleading crap.
)
It is not helpful and contributes nothing to any readers knowledge or understanding. (The worthless part)
It is an assertion, based on an opinion and gives the impression that the writer is a self-opinionated bigot. (The misleading part – possibly
Also give references to respected sources to back up your assertions, and, if you have already posted your reasoned arguments on this web site, include links to those posts.
i’m not gonna rewrite my post, and i’m sure as hell not going to read that fucking article again. i’ll just copy the rest of the comment which focuses on wikipedia’s article on “sentence”.

aLx replied on May 5th, 2008 5:31 am:

even worse is the article on “sentence”:
it does not say if the subject is a grammatical or a logical one. that is, the distinction between a logical and a grammatical subject is not even mentioned. this distinction can be important when analyzing a sentence — consider subject-to-subject raising constructions[1] or even ECM which can be analyzed as subject-to-object raising constructions[2].
at the end of the article it is briefly mentioned that there are indeed sentences that do not follow the “rule” or “definition” above:
now, why are those sentences “irregular” sentences? no, they’re not irregular sentences, they just _are_ sentences. and, true, they do not contain a finite verb.
————-
now, i don’t know if the article has been changed since i posted that comment. and, frankly, i don’t care. wikipedia is not a reliable source for scientific information.
we have a well known lexicon of linguistics over here. you’ll find it at universities, and philology students use it as a source. however, by our linguistics profs we were told not to use it. there are too many mistakes in it. to quote a prof: “this is because it’s written by a philologist, not a linguist.”
Might that statement possibly indicate or suggest an intellectual snobbery about philologists, who the prof. regards as a lower life form than a linguist?
no, i do not accept it as a gospel, there are indeed things i didn’t agree with.
my favorite linguistics prof didn’t study (general) linguistics, she’s actually a philologist. she’s an exception, though.
anyway, i quoted the prof because i don’t really want to get that lexicon, look for something that i can easily explain, translate it into english, and then get into details as to why this entry is not correct. hope you understand that.
you’re right, however, in assuming a potential snobbery, that’s pretty common among scholars. it’s something i don’t like but one can pretty easily discriminate between snobbery and “okay, he knows what he’s talking about, i see his point, i can’t find any arguments that could challenge his point but i can find arguments to rule out the point made by the other one.”
dude, first you complain about how unsophisticated his rant was and now your remarking that he’s too academic? what the fuck?
nice forhead

Wikkipedia is a source, but should never be used by itself. Whenever you do research, all facts must have at least unique two sources supporting it.
I love watching you. you make me smile every time and learn simething new as well. and Wikapedia is not a good source. i have found it o be wrong on a few occasions and it is not specific enough most of the time.
Sasha
hello there, i found ur youtube channel and i think it’s great.
I have a word, could u please tell me about the word sagacious, where did it come from?
thanks.
no
By the way !
THANKS !
I have a word request. Is it kitty-corner or catty-corner to describe something diagonally opposite, and what is the origin?
I hate them mother fucking beans.
Thanks for that
Could we PLEASE leave Mom
out of this dis-cuss-ion?
Hey Labbatt78, I like you UTube site especially SweetnessChrissy site. Did you notice what kind of bikini she had on. It was a strawberry bikini. You should have posted that on strawberry video day.
Ty Capman. Yes I did, she is HOT!!!!!!! I forgot to add that on my comments several days ago.
can you look up the term CAJUN
i’m wondering why we call CAJUN people CAJUN
CAJUN is a deformation of ACADIAN “people from Acadia”. ACADIA was the ancient name of the western part of CANADA from where the French speaking population was expelled by the English after the loss of this French Colony (about 1770). The Acadians settled down in Louisiana that was still French until 1802.
Bloody Brits !
I think it really depends on the subject which you are looking up. If you are looking for something like; origins, historical events, anything scientific, and so on, then it’s not that reliable. If you are looking up something on a show you watch, or a comic book or novel you read, then it’s usually pretty accurate.
hello marina good video5^
you are so interesting on how you teach things i heard that spill the beans all so came from the mafia people would say spill his beans or spill his gut out before he spills his guts out on us
that sister of yours has a big mouth she is such a snitch maybe you should make her skedaddle could you investigate the word skedaddle THANK YOU MARINA

Gawd Damn Cocoments!
Proof that coping all my post just in case coco messes up things.
I’ve lost a few to coco, but I don’t let them take it away anymore. If it posts too slow, on the right is an override, click it to post & I think it avoids cocomment altogether.
I didn’t copy either, my best work ends up in the trash
The only way I was able to save that long ass post, was my diligent to copy to my notepad.
The chain of custody is complete affirming our lovely teacher’s claim.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spill_the_beans
Ok someone just updated it and removed what I was commenting about. Damn I should have locked it. There was a reference that the story (the bean jar) was not verifiable. Proving what Marina was teaching.
Ha!!! Thanks to Google the old post was still in the cachecache.

Hi Captn,
Check the Wiki spilled beans history. EricV89 had added Marina’s video, but then removed it. Lots of Aug 3 edits.
Thanks Ped. I was feeling like a fool…
I had written my post about 5 hours ago and was pulled away to rescue some boaters.
When I was researching my article on you, I did not trust only Wikipedia
However, Wikipedia can have external links that can provide even more reliable information.
If I also note that his friends are very impressed by your saying something about it, that can also be proven
He is spreading the news about Hot for Words to the younger generation.
Excuse me, typing a bit too quickly there, should have noted, “I would want to have references, not “reference”.
Reply if you wish or not.
It would be trying for Wikipedians to provide the same proof.
Im just rambling on my opinion of what you posted.
That’s fantastic he is telling his friends about HFW. Im doing the same thing!
I’m telling alot of people too. Yet they look at me weird. I don’t care I’m learning alot and that’s proof enough for me.
Mike
jcr, it is the policy of a lot of newspapers that their reporters refrain from activities that may divulge bias. such as political signs in front yards. it seems naive to assume that journalists do not have personal opinions. but with adherence to journalistic principles and peer review and conscientious editing their opinions should be isolated from the story. it it almost infringes upon the 1st amendment right. i think i would respect a journalist more if they freely participated in the democratic process and social activities and were able to report the news without significant bias or personal motives. such reporting would demonstrate the appropriate skills and methodology required of a successful professional journalist. unless your answer would reveal a bias. what is your opinion?
Best Wishes, Ath, Can’t be found in Wiki.
Homework: Is Wikipedia a good source…?
on the Internet like this one.
I believe everything I read
Why did the condom go flying through the air?
It got pissed off.
Good one socksandviolins.
I’ve had pretty good luck gathering information from Wikipedia. Not only do they “spill the bean” when you need to know something, they really “come clean, cough up, sing, drop the dime,” and “spill their guts” with accurate information.
The book Gulliver’s travels is mis-spelled horribly. It says: Gullible’s travels! Just an observation!
Two totally different books.
Sorry it sounded as if you said Gulliver’s.
Cheers
http://www.gulliblestravels.co.uk/
Don’t fell bad I think that most of Her students missed it.
Her accent and the fact that Gulliver’s Travels is so popular
It was easy to miss.
I’ve always wondered what the origin of the term “goober” came from. When someone calls someone a “goober”, normally it means they are either silly or clumsy in some manner. For instance, Will Ferrell is a perfect example of a “goober”.
Oh, and I believe that Wikipedia is reliable only if it provides citations and links to websites where the information was retrieved.
A goober is a type of peanut other than that no ideas here.
It is still a good question. I too would like to know how it came to be silly or clumsy.
Goober was a character in the Andy Griffith Show.
He worked at the gas station with his brother,
Gomer (a spinoff show was – Gomer Pyle USMC)

Dobroye utro, Marina!
Could you tell us about these?
Kiss, Bistro, Myth.
Sometimes Wiki is OK, but you have to be careful with it. Technical articles are safer than political articles. Sometimes people with bad information post to Wiki, but sometimes the information is carefully watched by experts.
Poka poka!

Here is a link to the
bistro game lesson
http://www.hotforwords.com/2008/05/26/bistro-game/
For the answer, go to the second pulldown menu,
far left button – words / lessons (top of the page)
enjoy
Oops! You are right. Actually, I was thinking of “Bistro” as in the cafe, but that one is there, too.
Hey me and some of my friends were talkin and we were wondering why do sum people call cocaine “blow” can you help me out?
Marina, you mentioned that your sister was “pissed off”. So where does that term come from. . . hunh? Thanks.
heyyy, i think itd be great if you investigated the word “shampoo”!!
thanks
Dear Teacher — Wikipedia states that “PEI” was an ancient city in Italy that became evil and was completely destroyed by exploding volcanoes. Centuries later a 2nd city named “PEI” was built over the ruins of the old. The new PEI was named “POM” explosion in Latin and PEII with two Roman numerals marking it the second PEII. Thus giving us the word “POMPEII” as reported by Wikpedia. Can HotForWords investigate so I can know if this is
true or myth?
here’s a link to give you a better idea
of who Pompey, the Roman Magnus, was:
http://www.unrv.com/roman-republic/pompey-the-great.php
(look at the dates for analysis)
Wikipedia is convenient otherwise caveat emptor.
However, “1917″ Gulliver’s Travels?? Wasn’t it written in 1735 (second edition)?
I know you believe you understand what you think she said, but you don’t seem to realise that what you heard is not what she meant.
Look again and listen faster.
It “sounded” like Marina
said “Gulliber’s Travels”,
The graphic said “Gullible’s…”.
jmcargal has it right about
Gulliver’s Travels…
Wikipedia has become a kind of global brain. But what is an encyclodepia ? Isn’t it a kind of merge of knowledges ?
The main thing that differs is the control of those informations .Wasn’t some informations occulted by a kind of censure in encyclopedia ?
Wikipedia (and mainly all the communication media) is a profound revolution. Nowadays as we have lots of sources of informations. We have to check them to make them reliable.
So, don’t trust and consume what is wrote on the Internet but use it to get smarter !
completely agree !
BTW Marina, when someone “spills the beans” do they “break wind”?
Wikipedia is a TERRIBLE source for information since, as you said Marina, anyone can say anything on Wikipedia. They have had several serious problems, the least of which was that in 2007 “EssJay”, a Wikipedia editor and one of their “experts” was exposed as a fraud.
http://technology.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/tech_and_web/article1480012.ece
Wikipedia is useless as a valid reference tool.
Miss M. How about the phrase “called on the carpet”. RRR mentioned it earlier about 15 comment down.

Oh and Wikipedia ftw!!!
Peace!
Peas would be a good word to use instead of pisted, but I do not know that from beans. Soybeans are like peas and about any dictionary—becareful!
i think that you are the only person i can trust with this
Alright, I never usually comment on the lessons themselves, nor do I ascribe stars; but I think this one is hot, smart, sharp & dimensional.
Wikipedia is generally fairly good, Just don’t rely on it if the information is at all important to you.
Nick
I think Wikipedia could give a brief idea only, I don’t trust the information too much, I will look up myself when I want to know more about it
CHAV
Its a word used in the UK, but i have no idea of the origins
I thought “spill the beans” was the expression to describe when a pick-up truck full of Mexicans rolled over. Just kidding, I am part Mexican you know.
I’ve always wanted to know where the term “six pack” came from..
referring to the abdominal muscles
Through hard work & dedication, anyone can have a six pack.
Mwah-ha! No strings!

Don’t fall asleep first around
your friends when camping!
They must’ve used crazy glue!
Good find!
That’s my kind of six pack
Ok Marina, How about the phrase “On The Wagon”?: It usually means no longer drinking alcohol.
have you ever tried drinking while on a wagon? All the bumps in the road spill it everywhere
I’m still officially on strike, but I must mention :
http://www.hotforwords.com/2008/07/27/hot-synonyms/#comment-44040
Does this help you Chemikal.
I guess I spilled the beans too
About thirty seconds into this vid. my heart stopped & I sat upright in the chair… ‘Thought I was being called by teacher. “Spill the beans” sounds so much like… well see if you can figure it out.
Since you’re on strike & all, being a little pissy about TP. I thought you might enjoy an old episode where someone is teachers pet & since you don’t care who is the TP, you just enjoy the outfits. enjoy
First of all a late congrats. secondly here is another bit on GOLF
Marina
Here one of my sources
You need to cross check any source.
You know you can count on being
called on the carpet if you don’t…
Wikipedia is a good source of information; but not to be taken as gospel.
Any other source will always have possible bias or simply out of date information.
Wikipedia is easy to use and generally reliable, and if more detailed information is needed it can point you in the right direction.
BTW; Wikipedia said the Greek voting was NOT the source.
I would like the meaning and the origin of “dirty harry” and “church on the move” thanks :*
didn’t ‘Dirty Harry’ come from a name in the movies?
I believe it was Clint Eastwood
i heard the expression in Beer Fest and in the name of the track Gorillaz – Dirty Harry
The Gorillaz song was Clint Eastwood not Dirty Harry
Inspector Harry Callahan, if my memory serves. But the question you gotta ask yourself is, “Do you feel lucky?”
That may be, but the Dirty Harry movies are from the late 70’s to early 80’s.
“I’m not sure if I fired five or six shots, but since this is a .357 magnum, and will blow your head clean off, you’ve got ask yourself this; do I feel lucky?” – Dirty Harry, Magnum Force
I ALMOST had that right
check this out…
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066999/quotes
at second look it shold be early 70’s NOT late 70’s
his name was Harry Callahan and he was like a dirty cop, or a bad cop. It’s not a term, it’s just the name of the movie.
I don’t think he was a dirty cop he just used old fashion ways of dealing with crooks. he was a tough cop of sorts.
Your right cap I just didn’t know how to explain it. He just had to break the rules to get the bad guys.
Ya Ya – I’m late. I had to look at the
video twice. Some things went by
pretty quick…Like…
Gullible Travels???!!
Wassup widdat?
Now I wonder – WTF?

What is real about this lesson??
Did Marina (or ersatz sister)
make up the whole lesson?
Was there homework?
Oh yeah – wikipedia
they put a disclaimer right on
the page, and some pages
acknowledge they need a
better explanation by those
in that field of endeavor.
I don’t usually rely on them
as a source. I have used
it here as a link post.
They pop up in the top
three on a Google search
for most keywords i enter.
Basically, it is what it is.
So, is Marina serious about
Gullible’s Travels or is she
playing my “fishing” game?
She wants to see if WE are gullible.
Thank you. I wasn’t the only one who noticed that.
“Well-I-ALMOST-had-it-right!”
The link is to the exact quote,
I was trying to remember the
“do you feel lucky” part…
Check this out. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gullible’s_Travels
I am just learning, too.
belka, or bjelka (soft accent on “j”)?
Thanks G, I just downloaded that site. I finally might learn something. It seems pretty easy.
This site has sound and some
basic primer stuff

Is spill the beans the same as fiesty
If they used beans to vote, does that have anything to do with bean counters being aka accountants
Still LOVIN the food illusions
First we got the strawberries, then the chips and beans.
Any guesses as to what will be next? Sausages and eggs? Hamburghers and Frankfurters? Or will we go straight on to the Hors d’Œuvres?
I just stepped in a horse doover on my way across the pasture.
cow pies, next?
Custard pie?
