I am not sure if this will be read but I have a word request of sorts. The english language is fairly vast and there is always something new to learn, however I would be interested in hearing a Russian word and its origins. It is my understanding that Russian has influences from Latin, French and possibly from other regional languages and I would be interested in seeing how they have affected the current russian dialect. Hope to hear a response to this.

Now that the awkward “AA” meeting intro is done, What are we doing here again? I keep getting stuck on Yer Beauty.

You must be from Tennessee, because your the only Ten-I-See.
Just thought I would through that out there for laughs.

I’ll think up a good one for ya.

My family and I have come to the conclusion that any one that does not like animals is generally not a good person. That being said, I can tell that you are a good person by the way you treat your dog. And in the way you can laugh at your own mistakes. I am glad that you haven’t let your beauty or your brains go to your head. So keep having fun doing what you are doing. Because it looks like there are a lot of people that admire and look up to you now.

  19. Hi Marina.

I want to know the origin of the word-shit. (Sorry to ask. You know shit right?) My account in youtube is Chrissielim and please reply me. Thanks

  20. divitas says:

    Dear Marina,
If your sister is half as pretty as you, please send her to Cleveland. she would be worshiped like the goddess you are.
Can you discuss the meaning of “for the birds” Stretch uses this phrase all the time, and you should call him on this one if you think he can handle it.

Dear marina you are very nice… :*,
i know the origin of Marina :D :
Marina from the Latin marinus and means son of the sea.

    bye from italy

  23. Yes, you are more pretty than your sister. Very pretty. My Brother wants to marry you. Are you free? Or do you have a boy friend?
What do you do for a living, beside you tube stuff? I would like to know the word origin of the word “dipstick” Congrads on your 1 million views.

    Thanks

  24. 5greentea says:

deviance must be kidding :???: well anyway that does bring up a good word to ask about; “psychotherapy” where did it come from and does “deviance” need it?

  25. jcblalock says:

    Do you ever show anything?

  26. deviance says:

Hey Marina, I bet that you don’t even have a sister, which is very sad. Do you even have a social life? I mean, you probably spend most of the day preparing your next video. Please don’t tell me that it is not true because we both know that it is  Wasting your life in front of a screen is such a shame. You can always get help. Psychotherapy is always an option and I think that you can afford it…

    Marina,

Since I may be the most obsequent of your students, I would like to request these four common everyday words…

    Breakfast
    Lunch
    Dinner
    Supper

  30. dittodan says:

    Hi Marina,
My request is for the phrase, “Its a real McKoy” meaning the item you are referring to, is authentic.
One time I looked it up, and I saw there is a big controversy where it originated. So I believe that you would be the right person to get to the bottom of the truth.

Thanks, keep up the good work.

    Dan

    • mittheman says:

I think it came from the fued between the Hatfields and McCoy’s. The fued went on so long that a Hatfield could claim he was a McCoy until they figured out he was not a “Real” McCoy.

      • Fianchetto says:

I saw on either NatGeo or History channel two days ago… one of the first and best “Rum Runners” during the prohibition period was named McCoy. He would meet with canadian ships selling properly produced alcohol from canadians outside the 3-mile territorial waters boundary (now is twelve miles to prevent the rum-runners) and run it in to his blackmarketeers. Most other speakeasys ( Bartenders would request of their patrons of these illegal bars that when ordering drongs to “talk softly – speak easy” to avoid detection by eaves droppers) recieved theit illegal beverages from unreliable sources – makers of “bathtub gin” often added very questionable, sometimes toxic (formaldehyde, etc) ingredients to their hooch to “cut” it and thus increase its potence, and make it go farther (similar to how cocaine resellers mix, like, baking soda to their cocain to make more doses per kilo). Joe Kennedy made his millions selling liquor from Canada to ppl like Mr. McCoy, btw. Prohibition also gave us many of the common mixed drinks served to this day – add fruit juices and other sweet liguids to mask the taste of the formaldehyde and other bitter, possibly lethal toxic additives. Also whence the phrase from barkeeps today, “What’s your poison, friend?”. so, if a speakeasy was getting their illegal spirits from a reputable supplier, it was the “Real McCoy”. :-) Perhaps our Dear Teacher can determine which of us is correct :-)
        Ciao,
        Fianchetto1

      • Fianchetto says:

sorry for the typo — drongs = drinks :-)

      • mittheman says:

fianchetto1 you are correct. I just saw the same episode on History Channel.

      • Fianchetto says:

I was writing under the premise that either or all of us may be mistaken…even the History channel. I mean, that though unlikely, the History channel may even have gotten it wrong. No offense, please, but I think there may be me the chance that we may all be wrong…paraphrased from “2107 Curious word Origins, Sayings & Expressions from ‘White Elephant’ to ‘Song and Dance’” byCharles Earle:

A prizefighter of the late 1890′s calling himself “Kid McCoy” who was renowned for his skill in the ring, was at a bar, when a stranger came to the bar, perhaps a bit under the influence already, was bragging about his own skill, saying he “Could beat any McCoy”, not knowing he was within earshot of “The Kid”, who proceeded to render the stranger horizontal. On picking himself up from the barroom floor, the stranger supposedly amended his earlier remark with “…Any but the Real McCoy”….

The author offers another possible source, referring to heroine from the island of Macao, off China, like the Canadian liquor, was uncut, and was called the “real Macao”, which was later (like Madame became the popular american “Ma’am) corrupted to become “The Real McCoy.

The author also offers his version of our prohibition story, reminding me that the Rum-Runner’s name was Bill McCoy.

      • Fianchetto says:

Perhaps a supplication to our Dear Teacher to iron things out for us is appropriate here :-)

I stopped this recess video to give my computer time to download so I could watch it without hiccups. My computer stopped with this picture of Marina. Ok, I now have a new screensaver to pull my computer screen up with for the foreseeable future, but that’s not what this post is about. I’m eating a plate of eggs, grits, sausage links and the rye toast has a nice dollop of marmalade ready for spreading …, and now this face identified as Marina is up close, in my face as I stuff another forkfull of grits in my mouth. I’m swirling a nice mixture of saliva and eggs, bits of grits, chunks of sausage around in my mouth …, and that face is vocalizing some sounds over towards me but no words of hers register inside my brain. I imagine putting the fork down on the table as I rise from my chair …, I watch that face stop moving its mouth as I step closer, … my hand grabs the back of her neck and I help her bend herself over the kitchen table …

    Marina is sweet.

  36. #1 Student says:

Dear Marina & phantom sister of Marina,

Your sister’s voice sounds similar to yours. Are you twins? Was this you in this recess video or your sister? With a lesson ever day you must need a break, but having your sister fill in for you is a great idea!

    #1 Student

  37. Dear teacher,
“Coquine!” Is it a question? Are you trying to make us search for your sister you tube account? This is not fair!!!!! You know that we are all yours’ ! Yes your sister is a cute mistery, but you ‘re the only one, the true teacher!

is tht french for DON Filip who waits more….cant figure that out lol i translated thth in my head literally

      • Dear fellow student,
Well as you have surely already read it, this is a game. Some play it showing how intelligent or how learned they are. Other simply play it in an openly cryptic way ! This is the french for “Don Felipe who wants more” ! (Bravo you are good at french!) This refers to a chat we had with old pals from the teacher’s site about what to wait for when you have been teacher’s pet once.
Thank you to read my coment.

  38. sabooru says:

Kudos to the guy that posted that comment! :D Thats the best example of why being a suck-up student doesn’t get you what you want. Its when you don’t conform to the pack and do your own thing that you get the best results! It generated this video which could be one of HotForWords hottest appearances. I nearly broke my belt!

    • Thank you for the kind words
Captain Jack has a “greeter” duty he
performs, allowing myself and others to
freelance. I try to leave as many openings
as possible for others to participate in
the task of providing lesson links and
      encouraging newcomers to post, as
well as the usual jovial mayhem!
Feel free to jump in anywhere you see
a way to have some fun. Marina digs it!
“and now, back to the show” LOL!

  39. davecodave says:

It isn’t possible to be “better looking” than marina. ‘Equal’-at best.

    • Being a teacher’s pet is a distinction
no one can take from you, “Jan”.
Never been one myself, but I’m still here!
Captain Jack as Teacher’s Assistant is
telling us that he is also being left to
work out his duty with little input from
      Marina. With 100,000 subscribers, it
takes some of the housekeeping chores
off Marina if assistants and pets step up
      and participate. Remember when Gio
was chosen as pet? He was very avid
in his campaign, but where he is these
      days? I don’t know. For all I know, he’s
camped out under Marina’s bed along
with Kobe, Arnold and whatever creatures
      are in Marina’s verdant imagination!
I haven’t seen him, lately, just wrote
him a quick one. Anyway, you have fun!

  42. nimby45 says:

I was wondering where the phrase comes from “To get a girl in the sack” I was watching the Borat movie the other day with one of my russian friends  and she said that in some places they still use that same method of getting a girl to marry them as he tried to use on Pamela Anderson. Which was by throwing a sack over her head and carrying her away. I was just curious if this is where the origin of this phrase comes from or if it has some other meaning. Thank you!!

    • Did you click the coComments link?
Look for the conversation with DJ Doc Rok
You don’t want to miss it!

      • Thanks for the lead Cha Cha. Wow, Marina’s dual personality sister really does exist! Reminds me of “A Theatre for Cannibals”. Be careful. While it is easy to embrace Marina’s knowledge, confidence and strong command of feminine sexuality, I am warming to the contrast of her sister’s struggles and frustrations with her adolescence emerging into maturity, a duality we have all struggled with.

Maybe this explains the two degrees from Gorky, one for each sister?

But screw the psycho-babble, let’s see a world class cat-fight and maybe a mud fight in bikinis. You are either “for” it or your “4″ it!

  54. tecnocato says:

    AMATEUR
Although its origin dates back to the 18th century and relates to unpaid activities that we “love” (from amatore – to love), my question is, when did it became a word for the “inept at a particular activity” since most amateurs (lovers of a trade that they would do or do for free) ar actually very good at it and then the “inept” part does not necesarily apply.

When, why or how “amateur” became “inept”… BTQ do not dearch it in google. Nasty things will show up! :???:

  55. lorenah says:

Hello Marina, I am wondering where the word “honeymoon” originally came from. Hope you respond with a lesson. Thanks! :)

I would like to know where the word pshaw comes from. My grandfather used to say pshaw instead of saying a swear word.

  71. I’m curious where the word Masturbation comes from (pardon the pun). I’m also curious about a lot of the slang terms for it, some are obvious but what about, Wanking, jacking off, wacking off, frigging etc.
I understand if this is a little too risque for your website. I mean you’re cool Marina but even you have to have limits. Anyway, I’d love to see an episode about this and if you don’t do it I’ll still watch all your episodes.

  72. quiggles says:

    Dear Marina (and fellow students)

I have a quick technical question. When I click on “Recess” it redirects me to You Tube and the “Girl Fight” video. Much though I support Marina in her quarrel with her sis I’d like to watch Recess. Any advice?

    Many thanks, Quiggles

I wanna know why you say “whatever floats your goat”
have people thrown goats in the lake or what?
Please investigate this for me :) I am one of your biggest female fans, I promice! <3

  75. seesixcm6 says:

Dear Marina, Yesterday, I reacted wrongly to your “recess” video. I took your side against your sister, and it is wrong to take sides in family fights. Instead, we should help you two make peace. Love your sister because she might become your only relative at some time. Respect your sister by keeping her secrets. Respect must be difficult because some subscribers show no respect for you by posting bad words and crude remarks in your comment sections. Still, when I saw your sister’s angry tone and bad words in her video, I saw how terrible it might be if I offended you. I hope I would be wise enough to let you express your anger, then apologize to you, then talk with you about how we can make things better. So I hope you and your sister will be nice to each other and make peace. Someday I hope we see a video of you hugging your sister, and I ask for no more than that. Your dear student. SeesixCM6

  76. hi! ive just subscribed because i think your content is FABULOUS.

i’m wondering why they call CAJUN people CAJUN

    • Up in Ohio, we used to play a game
for one of the chat meet ‘n’ greets.
We would all show up at a UDF
      (United Dairy Farmers) store and
      order milkshakes! Since we all
drifted in at our own pace, nobody
saw through the conspiracy of it.
Poor counter girl! one shake after
another for a solid hour. It seems
to me that their have been a few
      barrages of that type here.
      Nobody requested cajun before,
now it’s a request made over and
over. Not just cajun, other words
      are targeted, too. Just sayin’
      I know this game

Your sister’s right about you, you know.  But she has helped you a few times & maybe is good around the house too, so, you know, might as well keep her…family. Besides, nice to have someone to blame. George Burns said “Happiness is a warm close-knit family…that lives in another city many thousands of miles away.”

  86. please do the word… hoe. why do they consider it a garden tool? and also it can mean being a slut.

This is a fun way to have an evil twin able to cuss on one channel and be the sweetheart of the internet on the other. Tarnished image? Attention whore? I don’t think so.

Hey beauty i have word request – why the the sky is called “sky” ?

  100. cshoulder says:

I’m curious as to the origin of a couple of words…

    oaf

    gigolo

masturbation (also seems pretty interesting since there seems to be a few different ideas of where it came from)

  101. James says:

Marina, I love the line ” She puts her modelling pictures as thumbnails and everybody clicks them” so true!!

You would make a good model for David LaChapelle This Is probably my favourite

  102. “One for the road”
    “Left in a lurch”
    “On the wagon”

    Hint: all three are connected……..sorta

    …………..

  103. smokey36bear says:

    Miss Marina,
Just wondering why barber poles are the way they are? I think I remember something about in the old west days they use to hang the dirty towels out front of their store. It made a kind of red and white swirl pattern, but where did the blue come from?
Also can you confirm weather or not that “red light district” goes back to the railroad days when the rail workers would go to the seedy parts of town and left their lanterns (colored red) out front to show others where to go to relieve sexual tension. Just wondering because I used to live in what once was a “red light” part of town back in 1889.
BTW it was legal here (Montana) until they closed down the last one in 1973.

Sorry for rambling on. I’m done……….. For now, anyway.

  104. RECESS is a latin word RE-CESSUS a past participle from RE-CEDERE “walk back” like in RECESSION from RE-CESSIO.

Other words : PRO-CESSUS “forward walking”
AC-CESSUS “toward walking” and so on

  105. duke veritas says:

Marina–So glad you had recess today!! Playing is fun

Maybe I’m extra stupid today (it’s possible–I just got done with studying for and taking my VERY LAST online class for the past 6 hours–Yay  ). However, when I click on the links from either YouTube and the HFW site, they take me to your cocomment page instead of this alleged sister page. I have no reason to doubt that it exists, since other subscribers have seen it. Can you check the links and maybe post them elsewhere?

    Thanks!!

PS I had a little recess today too  I went to Chinatown (in San Francisco) to buy gifts and chopsticks.

  106. adercsabi says:

  114. labbatt78 says:

I had my recess time earlier. I went to the concert. Sebastien Bach, Dokken and Poison performed there tonight in Chi-town! My sister got jealous because she likes Sebastien Bach of Skid Row. Bret Michaels of poison rules!

  115. auxie22 says:

I’d like to know where the affectionate slang term ‘Babe’ came from

  116. Where did the term “nick name” come from?
And why is the word “Bat” used to name a blind cave dwelling creature as well as a sporting item?

    -Thanks

  117. mystery man says:

How did the greeting “What’s up” come about. Who said it first and why ?

    • John says:

The so called evil twin is only doing the necessary evils. Get rid of the necessary evils and your eventually be overrun with more evil than a world can handle. Then God will take it all back to the drawing board, if you get my meaning! :!:

  123. shawnmnorris says:

What about hopping as in: “I’m hopping mad!” as an Englishman might say or bollix as in: “oh bollix! Poppycock!” or “I bollixed that up just fine!”

    Suggestions: hopping and bollix

    It’d be nice ta know,
    Shawn Norris

  124. shawnmnorris says:

Yur really funny, Marina, what’s your sister’s name? Is it like Miranda?

  126. Brian Howell says:

I would like to know the orgin of the word blueberry i was reading somewhere that its orgin is unknown. I understand the berry part and to me the color blue is to obvious nad they’re not really blue more purple

  127. quagmier8 says:

I don’t play. I quit school because they had recess!

  128. va3pmr says:

While looking for your evil twin I realized I have bad credit, lousy grammar and spelling skills, not going to Olympics and can’t learn Mandarin!! Any other good news???!!!!

  129. That’s the trouble with having an “evil twin” they can get out of hand when they want to assert their independence.

Their “darkside” can wreak havoc if you let it since it’s more “id” than “ego”

Mind what you have learned, save you it can! Since once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny.

Maybe you ought to learn some of the lessons from Dr. Jeckyll? Or even some of the more extreme ventriloquists?

  130. Jeez Louise! “the dark side” LMAO
I’m still taking it all in………..gotta watch it again!
ok ok – there is some real acting going on there!
I got REALLY scared! (yeah, right?)
a Cloverfield / Patty Duke moment!
(you know, we never see you two together)
    Well done, encore!

Loves ya frolicking all girly-girl with the little doggy!
I’m sure others will say all the things you never
wanted to know about how enjoyable you are to watch!

The spinning clock and time lapse made a nice montage!
The quick bop thru coCo was cool, Than-Q!
and then….horror show! Great googley moogley!
She even cusses like a lady! I choked on laughter…!
    What’s next? 5 stars x 3
    ciao XoxO

  131. shane says:

    Marina,

Yes, your sister is also beautiful, but you will always be my favorite. You have given us hundreds of videos, so your sister has a long way to go. However, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t curious (and excited) about what kinds of secrets she’s going to reveal.

OK, back to business. I have two requests…

    1) Where does the expression ‘Nip it in the Bud’ come from?

    2) I’m curious about the word ‘Fetish’. Does it have a simple European derivative like most words we use in America today, or is it more interesting than that?

Oh ya, and a 3rd request… Do more videos in bed. I loved this one! :)

  132. runawayscott says:

I can never figure out this cocomment thing. whats the her sister’s youtube channel?

  133. sniperskaya says:

Marina, yes, your sister is the Spitting Image of you! Except that she spits a lot more… If I didn’t know better I’d say you have a spit, er, split personality…

  134. annuddermale says:

“Marina’s sister is just as hot, but no hotter than Marina herself.”…Rule “Die Marina-Schwestern definieren heißes.” in The Marina Sister’s Sychophant Handbook

  135. sniperskaya says:

And whatever happened to the “Teacher’s Pet”???
Haven’t seen one of those recently except for your dog…

  136. sniperskaya says:

    Interesting Marina. VERY interesting…..
In old American TV sitcoms, bringing in the “evil twin” was the first sign that the show was in trouble…
The next sure sign the show was headed South (or North, to Siberia) was when someone had to dress up in a bear suit….
If we see you or your sister (or your dog!) in a bear suit, I guess we’ll know for sure!

  137. annuddermale says:

i think there’s enough duplicity on the web without adding to it…

but i’ll run with the gag for comic relief…

or more because i support Marina…

    and her sister…

    annudder

  138. jgmclovin says:

    How about this word?
    quadriga.

  139. sain says:

    Hello Marina.

You are better looking than your sister, I saw her video, and she is not as hot for words as your are.

BTW, what’s the name of your dog?, he is cute, specially at the end of the video.

  140. tdwright says:

    same youtube joined date?

  141. braveheart says:

I would like to know the origin word of french fries

  142. MCLIJazz says:

I’ve always thought the “sister” is a re-dub of Marina off-camera. I’m very hesitant to buy into the “twin sister out for revenge” plot.

  143. seesixcm6 says:

Dear Marina, I was the fourth person to rate your video five stars. I’m glad there was no homework in your recess video. I’ve been a subscriber for over a month now, since July 3rd. You are always well groomed, speak clearly in a beautiful voice, have great background music and provide wonderful presentations in your videos.
The comments about your videos has generally been good, except for a few who say crude and nasty things. I hope you disregard them. When your book and DVD are available, I plan to buy both of them to help sales and improve your royalty payments! :-)
I hope you’ll become so successful here, that you’ll never want to go back! BTW, even if your sister is thinner, taller, and speaks perfect English, I’d still like you the best! :-)
    Your dear student, seesixcm6

  144. GREG says:

You have got to love those close ups

  145. kimxinoxrox says:

    lol, um… I can’t find your sister’s youtube account
    T_T

on another note, I think the word “cosplay” would be a good word xDD

  146. James says:

How can sister video be in HQ? It looks like it has been filmed under the stairs

  147. BillyB says:

Who is this billybeedog… imposter? Bill O’______, nah I doubt that

  149. Neanderthal says:
