I am not sure if this will be read but I have a word request of sorts. The english language is fairly vast and there is always something new to learn, however I would be interested in hearing a Russian word and its origins. It is my understanding that Russian has influences from Latin, French and possibly from other regional languages and I would be interested in seeing how they have affected the current russian dialect. Hope to hear a response to this.

Just want to introduce myself and say Hi for the first time here.
So OK, here I go, Hi, I’m Possmguts.

Now that the awkward “AA” meeting intro is done, What are we doing here again? I keep getting stuck on Yer Beauty.

You must be from Tennessee, because your the only Ten-I-See.
Just thought I would through that out there for laughs.

I’ll think up a good one for ya.

    Bye for now.

My family and I have come to the conclusion that any one that does not like animals is generally not a good person. That being said, I can tell that you are a good person by the way you treat your dog. And in the way you can laugh at your own mistakes. I am glad that you haven’t let your beauty or your brains go to your head. So keep having fun doing what you are doing. Because it looks like there are a lot of people that admire and look up to you now.

Can you discuss the meaning of “for the birds” Stretch uses this phrase all the time, and you should call him on this one if you think he can handle it.

Hey Marina, I bet that you don’t even have a sister, which is very sad. Do you even have a social life? I mean, you probably spend most of the day preparing your next video. Please don’t tell me that it is not true because we both know that it is  Wasting your life in front of a screen is such a shame. You can always get help. Psychotherapy is always an option and I think that you can afford it…

    Hi Marina,
My request is for the phrase, “Its a real McKoy” meaning the item you are referring to, is authentic.
One time I looked it up, and I saw there is a big controversy where it originated. So I believe that you would be the right person to get to the bottom of the truth.

Thanks, keep up the good work.

    Dan

mittheman replied on August 21st, 2008 11:10 am:

I think it came from the fued between the Hatfields and McCoy’s. The fued went on so long that a Hatfield could claim he was a McCoy until they figured out he was not a “Real” McCoy.

    fianchetto1 replied on September 3rd, 2008 6:43 am:

I saw on either NatGeo or History channel two days ago… one of the first and best “Rum Runners” during the prohibition period was named McCoy. He would meet with canadian ships selling properly produced alcohol from canadians outside the 3-mile territorial waters boundary (now is twelve miles to prevent the rum-runners) and run it in to his blackmarketeers. Most other speakeasys ( Bartenders would request of their patrons of these illegal bars that when ordering drongs to “talk softly - speak easy” to avoid detection by eaves droppers) recieved theit illegal beverages from unreliable sources - makers of “bathtub gin” often added very questionable, sometimes toxic (formaldehyde, etc) ingredients to their hooch to “cut” it and thus increase its potence, and make it go farther (similar to how cocaine resellers mix, like, baking soda to their cocain to make more doses per kilo). Joe Kennedy made his millions selling liquor from Canada to ppl like Mr. McCoy, btw. Prohibition also gave us many of the common mixed drinks served to this day - add fruit juices and other sweet liguids to mask the taste of the formaldehyde and other bitter, possibly lethal toxic additives. Also whence the phrase from barkeeps today, “What’s your poison, friend?”. so, if a speakeasy was getting their illegal spirits from a reputable supplier, it was the “Real McCoy”. :-) Perhaps our Dear Teacher can determine which of us is correct :-)
    Ciao,
    Fianchetto1

    fianchetto1 replied on September 3rd, 2008 6:45 am:

sorry for the typo — drongs = drinks :-)

mittheman replied on September 3rd, 2008 9:18 am:

fianchetto1 you are correct. I just saw the same episode on History Channel.

    fianchetto1 replied on September 3rd, 2008 1:50 pm:

I was writing under the premise that either or all of us may be mistaken…even the History channel. I mean, that though unlikely, the History channel may even have gotten it wrong. No offense, please, but I think there may be me the chance that we may all be wrong…paraphrased from “2107 Curious word Origins, Sayings & Expressions from ‘White Elephant’ to ‘Song and Dance’” byCharles Earle:

A prizefighter of the late 1890’s calling himself “Kid McCoy” who was renowned for his skill in the ring, was at a bar, when a stranger came to the bar, perhaps a bit under the influence already, was bragging about his own skill, saying he “Could beat any McCoy”, not knowing he was within earshot of “The Kid”, who proceeded to render the stranger horizontal. On picking himself up from the barroom floor, the stranger supposedly amended his earlier remark with “…Any but the Real McCoy”….

The author offers another possible source, referring to heroine from the island of Macao, off China, like the Canadian liquor, was uncut, and was called the “real Macao”, which was later (like Madame became the popular american “Ma’am) corrupted to become “The Real McCoy.

The author also offers his version of our prohibition story, reminding me that the Rum-Runner’s name was Bill McCoy.

    fianchetto1 replied on September 3rd, 2008 2:06 pm:

Perhaps a supplication to our Dear Teacher to iron things out for us is appropriate here :-)

I stopped this recess video to give my computer time to download so I could watch it without hiccups. My computer stopped with this picture of Marina. Ok, I now have a new screensaver to pull my computer screen up with for the foreseeable future, but that’s not what this post is about. I’m eating a plate of eggs, grits, sausage links and the rye toast has a nice dollop of marmalade ready for spreading …, and now this face identified as Marina is up close, in my face as I stuff another forkfull of grits in my mouth. I’m swirling a nice mixture of saliva and eggs, bits of grits, chunks of sausage around in my mouth …, and that face is vocalizing some sounds over towards me but no words of hers register inside my brain. I imagine putting the fork down on the table as I rise from my chair …, I watch that face stop moving its mouth as I step closer, … my hand grabs the back of her neck and I help her bend herself over the kitchen table …

    Marina is sweet.

I was wondering where the phrase comes from “To get a girl in the sack” I was watching the Borat movie the other day with one of my russian friends  and she said that in some places they still use that same method of getting a girl to marry them as he tried to use on Pamela Anderson. Which was by throwing a sack over her head and carrying her away. I was just curious if this is where the origin of this phrase comes from or if it has some other meaning. Thank you!!

Maybe this explains the two degrees from Gorky, one for each sister?

    AMATEUR
Although its origin dates back to the 18th century and relates to unpaid activities that we “love” (from amatore - to love), my question is, when did it became a word for the “inept at a particular activity” since most amateurs (lovers of a trade that they would do or do for free) ar actually very good at it and then the “inept” part does not necesarily apply.

When, why or how “amateur” became “inept”… BTQ do not dearch it in google. Nasty things will show up! :???:

    Hey Marina,

What is the origin of the expression “Charley horse?” I don’t really understand the connection between this and the condition it describes.

    Guys;
    I think I may have Marina’s sister’s name;
    …….Cтоянка Orlova.
I could not find the English form of her name .
That little Minx’s is a Hottie in Her own right.
A little surly and dark, Wickedly Beautiful.
Does She have a web page? YET!
I am so there when She does.

Sony vegas.. 30 second clip.. 600mb!! Why..How can anybody possibly use it when this is so huge!

    foxbow15 replied on August 4th, 2008 1:15 pm:

yeah, I know its weird, sometimes vegas does that :S, try a different codec.

James replied on August 4th, 2008 1:16 pm:

How do I do that foxbow? Last time I used a codec (yesterday) I had to re-install my os

duddits replied on August 20th, 2008 6:50 pm:

A good free app for conversion/export is MPEG Streamclip. Has windows & mac versions. It has internal codec plus it uses whatever Quicktime supports and flip4mac ($ for export wmv on mac). I have QT pro & m2v playback (both $ at apple) but regular QT has H.264 — I use Sorensen3 much of the time.
I have used it to smash uncompressed video into web sized bites for a couple of years. http://www.squared5.com/
    -d

Marina replied on August 4th, 2008 1:22 pm:

The best compression for YouTube is H.264 or X.264….. there are discussions on how to get it in this thread somewhere:
    http://forum.videohelp.com/topic346256-120.html
(there is a free version for the PC online.. mentioned in the thread)

When you export you are using a codec… it’s just that you need to export to a better codec then the one you are exporting to (which is most likely a NOT-compressed codec)

James replied on August 4th, 2008 1:24 pm:

Thanks Marina. Do you use Vegas or something else?

    foxbow15 replied on August 4th, 2008 1:26 pm:

I ment format ,I kinda forgot how vegas worked, lost it when my hd crashed :P i’ll download it again.

    foxbow15 replied on August 4th, 2008 1:27 pm:

She uses a mac :???: so probably final cut pro.

James replied on August 4th, 2008 1:29 pm:

I will try that.. Marinas videos are so clear in HQ. I can sometimes get the “view in HQ” If I convert the file online to h.264 and the rest.. My family guy video did it on its own.. Guess that was because it was cartoons though.

    foxbow15 replied on August 4th, 2008 1:34 pm:

final cut pro is mac only, You can get the same quality with vegas. you just need a better camera :P

I would like to know where the word pshaw comes from. My grandfather used to say pshaw instead of saying a swear word.

  75. canadadan1971 on August 4th, 2008 10:12 am

I’m curious where the word Masturbation comes from (pardon the pun). I’m also curious about a lot of the slang terms for it, some are obvious but what about, Wanking, jacking off, wacking off, frigging etc.
I understand if this is a little too risque for your website. I mean you’re cool Marina but even you have to have limits. Anyway, I’d love to see an episode about this and if you don’t do it I’ll still watch all your episodes.

    Dear Marina (and fellow students)

I have a quick technical question. When I click on “Recess” it redirects me to You Tube and the “Girl Fight” video. Much though I support Marina in her quarrel with her sis I’d like to watch Recess. Any advice?

    Many thanks, Quiggles
