Phrase request: [cold turkey] is used to mean to suddenly give something up, like drinking, smoking – i.e – “I’m going cold turkey with cigarettes today”… how did “cold turkey” come to mean giving something up??

phrase request: [ cat got your tongue ?] this is sometimes said to people who are not speaking for responding when they ought to be. How did this come into meaning? It makes you envision a cat running around with a human tongue in its mouth as a reason for somebody not being able to speak.. Hot for Words needs to investigate!
