Oh, what a endearing reaction, but you didn’t name JohnJohn the teachers pet, saved that for next year?

  2. mikcool says: 170

Phrase request: [cold turkey] is used to mean to suddenly give something up, like drinking, smoking – i.e – “I’m going cold turkey with cigarettes today”… how did “cold turkey” come to mean giving something up??

  3. lmao! I like that kid; mack daddy! WoW! Has a high relevance to mysticism.

  4. You need a red eye remover. Can I give you a hand?

  5. Nobody nose the boogers I’ve seen.

    Hello Marina,
That was very nice of you to make a show and dedicate it to John John. I’m sure he loved it.
Homework- always tell a friend if they have one hanging out.

  8. Prediction – next word that will be investigated…..

    drum roll please!

    “Miley”

Hmmmm…… interesting….. it’s dangerous to have these psychic powers!

In the UK, dried nasal mucus is often informally referred to either as “snot” or “bogey” (s) “bogies” (pl).

Speaking of which, an old childhood wind-up…

Pick it, lick it, roll it, flick it!

Probably best not to try that with the camera rolling :)

  10. My homework for this lesson: YES, I let my friends know when they’re hangin’ wallpaper from the membranes (after I get a picture, that is  ).

My word for this lesson is: RHINOLITH scientific-speak for a “nasal concretion.”

Sorry I missed all the drama. Better for me, though I guess.

  11. animalntaz says: 160

I bet there will be another kid requesting the word COOTIES.

  12. I usually say “you got a bat in the cave”
    funnier than saying booger

  13. Dear teacher,
This one was really excellent. Something really original like the halloween one. Sometimes it is always to have these kind of lesson, children questions are the most interesting !
Is it possible to have the origin of the words beyond and bootleg?

 <- rose colored classes

  20. I was just wondering, why is it called a pair of pants, or a pair of panties? There’s only one, so why a pair?

    • Two single pant legs equal one pair of pants.
Marina did a word game lesson on panties
but the links are telling me I can’t “edit” them, WTF?

  21. Some folks rise to an occasion and
    show intelligence and creativity.
Some folks are just hoping to

    good weekend, guys.

    • Which there is a perfect quote just below Recent Comments:

apologies for ruining your weekend. i didn’t know your mood depends on what is said on this site. i’ll take it into consideration and contemplate the content of my comments prior to posting regarding the question of whether or not my comment will be humble enough to find your approval.
my inferior state of mind disallows me to even recognize the heights your brain probably floats around in.
i apparently epically failed in my attempt to impress you, or even meet the standards necessary to not be perceived as a clown by you.
i do hope, sir, that you will graciously accept my apologies for insulting your intelligence. in awe i bow before your wisdom, oh great master.

Seriously – melikadothechacha – whatever anyone said to whomever, what’s the difference. We’re all miles away each other and acting under randomly chosen “handles.” I’m not sure what could warrant that post above.

  31. I have a request for a word, well actually phrase, I would like to know where the term “Kansas city shuffle” originates from. I heard it in the movie Lucky Number Slevin. If you could help me out, it would be great.

  32. I always wondered where the word Sneakers came from

  33. Marina, how did “bugger” come to mean “sodomize” in the British version of English? BTW Marina, did you know that on Youtube they have an ad/banner running over top of your words when they are printed out on the screen making them hard if not impossible to see? I don’t care when “House Bunny” appears in theaters, I want to see your lesson without the ads! Проклятые капиталисты!

  34. Capman911 says: 135

Why can’t people just leave this alone. RRR you can kiss my ass. And your very right you have pissed me off royally again. One minute your on my side then the next your condemning me. Why you have to keep dredging up something now that is very touchy and a sore subject is beyond me unless it’s your thing in life is to cause problems between people and keep turmoil stirred up on Marina’s site. I told Bob I was going to be cool about the rest of this, but I have taken all I am going to. Every time I read through the comments I find a new comment or thread about what happened yesterday. Marina and myself have made amends so we thought now everything will settle down and be normal. No you are starting another flame war that is going to be the end of me not you. You will continue to harass and belittle these people with you satirical ways. Sorry Bob I can take only so much. And no RRR everyone around me doesn’t have to walk on eggshells. And no RRR I don’t no if I caused Marina to cry or not if I did then I would do anything for it not to of happened. We didn’t discuss that in our e-mails to each other this morning. So I hope you are happy with your self for keeping this going another day and night.

@ Marina you can edit me out of your video as teachers pet or what ever. As long as people like RRR are on this site then I will not be.

If standing up to a Bully gets me canceled so be it. To die with honor against a Tyrant is a good way to go.
Thank you for a good death.

      • Capman
As you yourself see the pattern in your actions.
        (( MISUNDERSTANDING.))
You’re a loose cannon, You hurt people that mean you no harm. Your friends for the most part. And then you expect others to understand your feelings.
Would you slap your Wife and then make Her apologize to you for making you hit Her? That is what you did with Marina.
She at most was just trying to show others that read the posts here that, She does not think it is funny to mix sex with children. It is Her image that is hurt if people think, Hotforwords LLC. is rude and crude and treat children badly.

I’ve got no problem with you, You are no threat to Me. Attack Me all you like. I love to fight. No one else here wants to fight with you. They all just want to be your friend and get along. Remember that before you Hit first then apologize……. again. OK?

      • Mike; You’ve got to be kidding…in No Way should you leave now. It’s been clearly stated & resolved the proprietress of this site wrote emphatically that she would be bummed if you left. Just to let you know that when I first read BOTH comments I thought one was a little too risque and the other was too harsh (guess which was which), but I’ve been both on this site with a good chance of repetition. So what? If you leave over this I guaranty some a-hole is standing-by ready to take your place & that is not good for anyone, nor is it good for HFW–and that would (then) truely be something hurtful.

    • Capman
OK then I tried to point out that Your a hitter and then apologizing ego maniac. so I can kiss your ass? Does everyone you know tremble when you walk by? I am not one. So stop now. This you being an asshole and me pointing it out. I am not like Bob and I will not placate you and try to calm you down so if it a show down you need, you found another maniac to give it to you. Or you can stop BEING a Bully and admit you are a hot head and over reacted and hurt someone who meant you no ill.
      Your choice friend?

      • RRR, what part of “water under the bridge” do you not understand? Every thing is just peachy between them. Now you want too keep digging up the dead horse and showing everyone that the horse is dead and searching for someone to blame. Please leave it buried. It wasn’t a real horse anyways. It was a small chocolate covered horse (you know like the chocolate covered bunny you can buy in spring time) that was dropped on to a dirty floor. Thankfully no one was hurt. We where sadden from the loss of good chocolate. Since it was very tasty chocolate (fit for a queen) and we didn’t want anyone get sick from it, we had to give it a proper burial. So let it be just water under the bridge. Don’t utter another word about this chocolate horse. Ok? Thanks.

      • Well Captjack
This is not the first time Capman has blown off. He is an abusive man.
He thrashes out at any little thing and expects others to UNderstand His problem, His temper. It is always His feelings that matter.
He’s attacked Me on another time for an MISunderstanding and others too. Now, He’s attacked Marina for another misunderstanding and expect Us to understand him……… Again.!!
NO ………No more it stops now! He is not a nice guy! He is a Bully and the way to treat a Bully is to stand up to him and say NO more…….!!!

I’ll go away and not say another thing about it fine, But let it be known that I stood up to Him and next time He blows it will be up to YOU to stand up to Him and say .
        NO MORE!!
        NO MORE!!
        ps
        Chocolate horse …..really??

      • RRR I don’t know how you can call me an abusive man and a bully. The misunderstanding you and I had was just that a misunderstanding. I didn’t understand your tone at the time nor did I under stand the format on how you comment to others. The only other misunderstanding I have had with anyone was Argon. I misunderstood that he was making a bad comment towards the people on this site and it was the utube site he was referring to.. I was only taking up for people on the site. How do I thrash out at ever little thing? I think I am a very passive person compared to others that comment on here. If I did make a wrong statement then yes I would apologize for it, I am man enough to admit when I am wrong. I would like to get this resolved between us so it doesn’t keep escalating.

      • I agree with you. I did not mean to jump Marina. But I did. I can’t take that back. But I tried to show how sorry I was and yes I am a sorry person for doing that to her. In our emails to each other she explained that she thought that would be the proper response to my comment as she said that if we were standing side by side and I made that comment then she would say the same thing and we would both laugh about it. I agree with her response. I see now that she should have never backed down and apologized back to me. I should have been sent an email from her telling me that was not a proper conduct to take. But she has a very big heart as you know. So all I can do now is except the consequences of my behavior and move on so I don’t cause any more problems for her site. Thanks for the chiding we all need to be put in our place now and then. Hot headed yes but I don’t think I am a bully or troublemaker.

    • I agree, and i apologize if I’m over stepping my bounds. I think everyone should let it go. What is done is done. This is only between Marina and Capman. All people like RRR, and myself (now) are just riding the coat tails of things that don’t matter anymore.

    • darn – I’ve been trying to find the fireworks that everyone is talking about. I’d really like to see what someone said that was so hurtful and got some of you so pissed off.

Can someone direct me to the quotes. I must know!

    • Capman
      Stop it already …ok?
I am not playing anymore, you’re not going to get me to apologize to you and make nice. But…You do not need to leave, just stop being a hard ass. Just treat others the way you want to be treated, that’s all.
      Just drop it.

yeah I’m fairly new to this online conversation stuff & it is a funny site.
but the tendencies I exhibit here at hotforwords forum are different than how I would act at, say, a political forum, or even a so called christian forum. Here I can be a little more, ah, just me, and I guess a little more vulnerable, which here, is OK…I hope.

      • we all belong to various social groups and modify our behavior to function effectively in them. we all do it, belonging to several communities is beneficial to health and survival. there is a theory in psychology called bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory of development. that explores these various communities one belongs to and how it influences human development.

      • Yep I found myself in there. I saw Buzz, the hairy guy chewing on the key board. No just kidding you Buzz. You wouldn’t chew your key board.

        Thanks, BillyB

      • Man, that was on hell of a reading assignment, Billy B. The brevity of your comment was inversely proportional to the information overload contained in the link! Funny stuff, though. It’s nice to see what some of my classmates look like after all this time. But I didn’t see any deadmen in there, so it must still be a work in progress or some such.

What a downer! No new video today! (Not yet, anyway.) Plus, bad feelings over so small a question as “Why would I think that?” I’m glad things are resolved, now. I hope Marina didn’t get so concerned that she couldn’t edit a video for release, today. I also hope Marina gets better word requests than many of the crude ones, or limited-interest ones that I’ve seen. All I ever asked for was “Sweetheart” and I already looked it up for myself. (Many of you could look up your own words, too.)

I think its cool that she looks up what you call crude words. You won’t see a normal school teacher look those words up. She is making video lessons of words no one else has the guts to do. And she does them very eloquently.
Yes I look up my own words sometimes too. I even purchase my own books, instead of using the internet all the time. My most recent purchase was The Oxford Companion To Ships & the Sea – 1976 ED. Worth about $100.00 dollars.

Sometimes I go to their house and look up stuff just for laughs, yet it still doesn’t compare to the knowedge or enjoyment of learning from of our beloved teacher, Miss. Marina

      • Smokey, Wow that must be cool. My dad had this cool collection of encyclopedias which I was always sticking my nose into. Mostly because I was grounded for most of my young life. I remember seeing this illustration of a flying fish. I thought it was fictitious but then one day when I was sailing around the world on the USS Missouri, a flying fish made it to the main deck. I could not believe my eyes. This was the same fish I had research when I was little.
Yes I enjoy Marina’s lessons. I always waiting for the next one. Its like eating the next meal. It satisfies your hunger for the time being but if you miss one you get very hungry for that next meal.

The misunderstanding between Marina and myself has hopefully been resolved. Like BillyB stated I have a short fuse and I will admit it. I do my best not to let things get under my skin, but I just loose control on occasion. Sometimes I don’t know how to take some of the comments or their meanings that are put to me. Each person here has a different type of humor. Most I understand some I just let slide until the one comes up I take offense at. That happened yesterday and to the one person I never ever wanted to offend, and I did. I said I wasn’t going to apologize for what I said but I am and I hope Marina will accept it. It seems I have been doing this a lot apologizing for one thing or another ever since I joined this group of amazing people. Sorry I can’t help my attitude, but it is a part of me.

Don’t ass u me that I said Marina isn’t sexy, she most definitley is, but the definition of sex symbol would be a person’s Image or persona… that which is peceived. HFW has carved out a unique representation & is ever changing, growing , morphing…whatever you want to call it.
Marina is a person, with a soul & you can make all the assumtions you want about her, but don’t believe that your fantasies reflect the real person behind the HFW persona.
I’m not unhappy I just don’t use the emo things that much. hehe
Got to go wash the car now (dirty after camping {true}) I didn’t get to go though

    • So then sexy women are not smart,
Smart women are not sex symbols?
Is Perris is not a person with a soul and or smart?
Are you trying to prove me wrong or that you are a hypocrite? (( ))
Marina is or is not ……….like anyone knows. not sure She knows.

      • BillyB says: 116.2.1

Hey got you email. I was a little inaccurate before, saying that we have souls. We are souls, we have bodies, is the way it makes sense to me. Actually most sexy women are smart. Pam Anderson grew up on our Island & is from a very “normal”, for this area, family… with a daddy that would kill for her & has threatened paparazzi etc. She knows what persona she has portrayed & plays it up big time. Her dad & I probably would agree that it isn’t the safest thing she could do. She has made mistakes & continues to, but there is no denying her desire to be in charge of her own future. Heard her interviewed on CBC Radio last weekend, she is ambitious. “Paris” as in the heiress, is who I assume you meant, another soul who may or may not survive the antics of her youth, by grace she has made it thus far & knows full well (I hope) what people say about her, but she seems to care as much about appearing, as appearing intelligent.
I’ve always wondered what is meant by sex symbol & not to start an argument about semantics but doesn’t it, (sex symbol) originate in the head of the one who has made the object (persona) a symbol for their desire or what ever you want to call it … possibly lust or something close to it. A symbol is symbolic only to the one who gives it significance.(An olive branch is a symbol of peace, it is not peace, to some it is just a stick) Can you not, even at your age appreciate the privilege of being invited to someone’s place, even if others think of them as a sex symbol, without ogling or staring or being rude even. I’ m not angry or trying to sh#t on you, but you are like my mom, in a way. If there is a deposit left on the lawn by a wee k9 friend, she will poke it to see if it stinks and as everyone knows, it can’t be left alone  I appreciate your unique personality & I think you said before you would want your own daughters treated with respect or you would go apeshyte or something like that
I’ll admit to a certain amount of hypocrisy as long as you consider it honest hypocrisy, as it seems at times to dominate me, I fight it with feeble weapons of my own & some prayer. As far as proving you wrong, you know far more than you let on & I would get terribly confused if the point of my life was to prove people wrong.
enough outa me I’m back too work, thanks for the insanity break. I got no emo on that one.

      • WOW
A lot of wind to blow out a candel…?
[Can you not, even at your age appreciate the privilege of being invited to someone’s place, even if others think of them as a sex symbol, without ogling or staring or being rude even.
        ???????????????????????

You lost me for the most part of you diatribe but are you accusing me of being a ogler or sycophant something whatsoever. ??

But as for not being young enough to know it all, You’re right.
And when you grow up and don’t know it all anymore you can be the stupid old guy……..too. if you’re lucky.

I’ve heard the word originated from a Mr. Stuart Pid in London, but surely Stu couldn’t have made the word, STUPID, as popular as it has become.

Please tell me more about the word STUPID and how it grew beyond Stu Pid into a word we all love to use in rush hour traffic and other similar situations where we just wish someone would shut-up or get out of our way.

Marina’s response the first time was not inappropriate at all. C9 took it wrong & flipped a switch. Guys cannot tell women how to react to what they say, most guys deal with the reaction not even caring about the result. Capman cares but has a short fuse. I Say, let him cool his heels & heal his cool. He is a big guy.
Look at the crap that is said to the boss on Youtube & here, she is very gracious & even if Cman was serious, he can deal with a blow to the ego, at our age you learn most dignity is false anyways. My wife, a very properly raised woman, when in the midst of childbearing found all kinds of new things to call me  What really surprised me was that after the first kid , she wanted more?
Before I get too off topic (already am) Marina is a person, not a sex symbol. HFW breaks down the stereotype of a sex symbol. I don’t take lightly what I read here, but I try not to take or give anything to personaly, as you know RRR it can be & is very often misunderstood.
So if you think I hate you RRR, go ahead think that, but I don’t. So take that as a “I find it hard to repect your opinion” because you are so hard to understand sometimes… but I do repect you & your right to say what’s on your mind as long as you respect your hostess.

roadrunmch, you only consider the opinions of attractive women and you ignore the opinions of unattractive women. is that what your saying? i don’t know what your concept of attractiveness is, but i assume hillary clinton is your example of an unattractive women. so, unattractive women do not have anything to say that you would bother paying attention to? are you that attracted to the men you bother paying attention to? just trying to understand, just me i guess, but you rarely make much sense, perhaps your satire is too sophisticated or maybe your just unattractive. but weren’t you just complaining about how shallow paris hilton is?

Привет, какое происхождение у слова depreciation. Привет из России!!

    • DÉPRECIATION is French = loss of price, like for an aging bad car.
The root is PRIX = PRICE = ЦЕНА
Я бы сказал DEPRECIATION = ОБЕСЦЕНИВАНИЕ
The notion of PRICE is WORTH in Germanique but the very word PRICE is taken from Latin like in any Germanic language.

Hi Marina, could you tell us what is the meaning of the word “PWND” Its like Ownd, Owned, but why the P??? Thanks Marina, we love you!!!

    • foxbow15 says: 88.1

probably a typo, cause the p and the o are next to each other.

    • buzzword says: 88.2

perhaps “previously owned”, car dealerships use “previously owned” to describe used cars because it sounds better i guess.

    • maybe it has to do with chess

    • aLx says: 88.4

      it’s just a typo.

p instead of o, and it stuck.

      you all ain’t l33t enough anyway. n4ps.;P

      • maytus says: 88.4.1

Maybe is a typo, but, people use to say that they “Give someone a lesson, saying OWNED, and the same but harder or better is the PWND, but why P? Why P make this better, maybe is as buzzword says, “Previously owned”, looks like, dunno.

    • aLx says: 88.5

no, it’s just “owned” with a typo. doesn’t matter if you say “ownd” or “pwnd”. when you ownd someone you beat him. like, defeated him.

    • Check :!:

pwn, pwnd is not a typo. It was crafted in the BBS days. . “ownd’ is incorrect. I don’t know why that keeps showing up. ‘pwnd’ is not invented by l33t speak, but has been adopted as such.
Younger gamers are steadfast in their belief that the origin of this word dates back to the days of WarCraft, when a map designer misspelled “Own” as “Pwn”. What was originally supposed to be “player has been owned.” was “player has been pwned”. This is false origin.
Older gamers, those that were around before video games and those that grew up using BBS’ for online entertainment, will argue that the origin of this word dates back several hundred years ago to the game of Chess, when checkmating your opponent with a Pawn, the lowest valued chess piece, was termed, Pawned, and without using l337 speak simply typed pwn, pwnd, etc when executing this form of checkmate.
Later is was used in the phone pheaking days. I have numerous documents dated back in the 80’s showing that it was used often during these days.

And Mate… You all have been pwnd!

Marina thinking that Capman was serious in his comment responded as such. 15 words. Too little of words exchanged to get th e correct point across? Not the correct selection of words? I wonder… :?: :?: :?:
