annuddermale , i once owned a Siberian Husky , little known fact about them. When the communists took over Siberia they killed the Siberian Huskys by the thousands because too the people of Siberia a persons wealth was measured in how many animals he owned, in this instance his dogs. the communists wanted to eliminate all forms of wealth to eliminate class distinctions. yeah, ah, “uni” doesn’t mean “three”… that would be “tri”. Uni is “one” of course… and verse probably relates to the Latin root for “turn” … so, “one turn” … which MAY mean something like “all that we can see in one turn” of the globe. A guess there… ???
Marina.. Please hang on to the new vid for about an hour.. I need to go for a bath!! And tomorrow I get my GCSE results so i will probably miss it then too.. Actually do what you want so long as FOXBOW doesnt get it first
Would just like to say that your site is very cool, keep up the great work! My question isn’t so much a word as a symbol, I would like to find the origin of the dollar sign $. What does the S stand for and the line, and why does it sometimes have 2 lines?

Sickness Quotient: 49%
Congratulations! At a 49% Sickness Quotient, you’re almost well-adjusted.
Detailed Diagnosis
Interpersonal Insights
You have a positive attitude towards nearly everything, which is incredibly stupid and very annoying to those around you. Everyone likes you. This is because your life is such a mess that everyone else is relieved they aren’t you.
Job Performance & Attitude
Your work is of such poor quality that your manager is considering replacing you with a machine that flushes. You have little empathy for anyone more successful at work than you, which is pretty much everyone.
Personality Insight
Your personal motto is “Colorless green ideas sleep furiously”, but no one knows what the hell that means.
In every ink blot I see my Mother telling me that I won’t amount to much of anything–they’ve invited me to come and spend the night so that they can study me…

I don’t like this test, I feel a bit insulted. My sickness quotient was 62% along with some negative insight as well as making fun of my positive outlooks. All I saw were horses, a bat, cougars, martial artists, ballet dancers, a supermodel, and a mage. And I forget the rest. Is this a real test, or more like a joke?
It’s so very fitting that you chose to write about the Rorchach, when our assignment was to tell the opposite of pith None of it is very clear, concise, or conscientious.
As Buzz said, the big R is a projective test used rarely by the majority of psychologists. This PARTICULAR test is a stripped out version. The real thing has different image qualities and does NOT give you a multiple array of choices. Plus, the interpretation they give you here is interesting, but is for entertainment purposes only
So, no worries if it said you are “sick” or something, and thanks for the entertainment, Marina!!!
(And James, who inspired her )
So……… She was just testing us.
It seemed to be a little suggestive to just be random.
Could it be a syck-test for the next TA.
What is really on your mind??
No pervs need apply
It seems that everyone that takes this test is somehow off there rocker in one form or another. What would be a good score for this test, or is there one.?
the rorschach test isn’t really used anymore by most psychologists. because of the degree of subjective judgment required to interpret them many psychologist conclude that projective tests such as the rorschach test do not meet objective standards. other tests and questionnaires produce more reliable results. the test is fun, interesting but not very constructive.
Right thats it.. I have had enough.. I am doing re installing windows… AGIAN!!!!!! I need movie maker back … So i had better start writing my programs down .. Bye sony vegas!
It would be ok if I could do a 15 second clip without it being 315 mb long Is this the misscupcake that did the hotforwords impersonation on youtube by the way?
G’Day misscupcake again, I also use Sony Vegas and it is great.
James, you just have to learn how to render your videos. You can render to many formats and compressions. A 15 sec clip can be rendered as small as 48 KB and a decent quality version is only 1 MB.
i dunno how to make it reply to your most recent comment so im replying to this one again
thanks for making me feel famous LOL yes its THE misscupcake who impersonated marina. marina is my fave to impersonate cos shes gorgeous and when i impersonate someone i begin to become them in a way, so i feel very good when i think im like marina.
you must have settings wrong if vegas is making your files really large. vegas is very powerful and worth the effort to become accustomed to! i had that problem too, but i fixed it.
when i render files, theres some options around there.
i forget what i did, but i know i changed it to save the file types as ‘mpeg2′ or something like that. i think the word ‘compressed’ might be in there? just play around with the different file types to find what works for you.
aLx.. be nice ! Misscupcake.. don’t mind aLx.. lately he’s been complaining about all the smileys! Maybe he’s angry about something? Here.. I’m going to set him over the edge:
Emoticons are a form of visual assault on the mind of the person receiving them as a form of taking away your free choice as to what the person is actually trying to convey in the written text of a message. A subtle form of thought control. Thats why I rarely use them.
Have to say hello to misscupcake, your youtube channel was my first subscripion & I laugh at your funny postings, ah the girlie stuff… not my bag, but you’re a good kid. Your HFW Impersonations a great, best I’ve seen & ya know, She’s only my third subscription. G’dye from a fellow commonwealther in Victoria B.C.
Was that Marina making fun of aLx?
There is hope for her yet.
Maybe …Her sister got a hold of her password??
Now if I can get her to tell us why the hell her nick name is Koba?? X 10000 for aLx
LOL smilies are a visual assault on the mind?
i see what youre trying to say;because smilies DO in fact change the whole conotation of a sentence or paragraph.
which is exactly why i love them so much. things can be so easily misread but smilies can help everything be happy

A word meaning opposite of pithy?
Antipithy? (nah – that’s antipathy mispelled)
Hmmm…..maximum verbosity?
Bob as the teacher’s pet? Congrats!
Kinda lost me with that last video bit…
no connective tissue with the rest of the piece…
Another of your many video “requests”?
James just wrote to confirm he is doiing
a PBNJ video. Kewl! The underlying joke
to this bit is that people in England rarely
use peanut butter for anything but cookies!
The idea of a peanut butter sandwich is as
foreign to British persons as kippers for
breaffast is to Americans. This should be fun…
It’s very dangerous to mix a pithy phrase with antipathy – it’s kind of like when you let your pasta and antipasto come in contact with each other….they annihilate each other.
Not true, Mel, I was weaned on peanut butter sandwiches and still make a special trip to Costco for my supply of Skippy.
Have you ever tried peanut butter and honey sandwiches?
The honey adds sufficient lubrication to make eating it cold bearable.
Just don’t try it with runny honey though.
Times do change…..peanut butter in England
30 years ago, I couldn’t find any on the shelves
at the grocery in Coventry. When I found some
in a specialty foods shoppe, it was in a teeny
jar – barely enough for two sandwiches!
Their is an Israeli product, a chocolate cream.
Makes a sandwich taste like a
Reese’s Peanutbutter Cup.
30 years ago! – I’m talking 50 years ago, although, come to think about it, there was a cancer scare which took it off the shelves for a while. That might have been around 30 years ago. It was because some Ralph Nader type foodie discovered that some peanut butters were made using the husks as well as the nuts, and there was a remote chance that the husks could have some fungus growing on them, which might have been a health hazard.
Dleted movie maker 6 and now stuck wit 2.1 or whatever it is I NEED MM6 BACK . still editing it.. Havent been arsed yet.. downloadiong music instead @)
I’m watching a movie, “The World In His Arms” [1952]
The action takes place in 1850’s San Francisco, it stars the Russian countess, Marina Selanova and Capt. Jonathan Clark.
It will sturr your emotions, and boil your noble blood.
Tell me if you’ve seen it.
Some people seem to think that, as reining Teacher’s Pet, I have some kind of influence and have asked me to request the meaning of your nickname, Koba.
Well, never let it be said that I am too proud to help the less fortunate, so please reveal the secret.
I don’t want to use it until I know that it’s not derogatory.
Although the sentence is informal, it certainly is grammatically correct as it has an object “what”. The more formal “Of what were you thinking?”, just sounds to formal in many contexts.
To be really pedantic, I suppose I should have written, “Is this that of which you were thinking?”
But then some smartarse would have said, “How can this be that? This is this and that is that, and never the twain shall be the same.”
Ahhh, prospero811, you are a golfer, but you won’t putt? OK, OK, I missed the other “o” in “to formal” above. Dang, if it isn’t spelling, it’s grandma. What is one going to do?
Give it up Bob, now that she knows I want to know it’s not going to happen.
I can see her now, her arms and legs crossed, teeth clenched. Cussing me in Russian ….I won’t….I won’t and he can’t make ME.
a pith helmet is a piece of cork used by 19th century soldier to keep the sun off their head it was rubbish for protection you can put most things through it. i own one and it bends and bends. i can tell you that you have to be careful with them.
i was wondering how do i put a video comment on here.
answer hell of a lot stronger than the piece of soft rubbish i wear u mite as well try putting a pin through it and itd go through not reliable at all
LOL gordon ramsay says things like ‘that meal is bollocks’
its funny how bollocks alone insinuates something is bad or untruthful or yuck. but saying the phrase ‘the dogs bollocks’ indicates something is fantastic! hehe
in australia we say ‘you bloody beauty’
well, the stereptype aussies do LOL.
the dog’s bollocks had a (non-obvious) partner phrase: bog standard.
These both have a common origin.
Way back in the mists of time, in the UK, a company called Meccanno produced construction kits for children (strips of metal with holes, nuts, bolts, etc).
One was Box: Standard which induced the phrase bog standard into the brit language (meaning average).
Another was Box: Deluxe which induced the phrase dog’s bollocks into the brit language (meaning supreme first class, etc).
oh, btw .. i was saddened by the lack of smileys in your first response.
Dear HotForWords I have a word request. I was wondering if ‘K9′ or ‘K-9′ somehow originates from ‘canine’ and was also wondering the origin of that word too
I have a request for a phrase rather than a word…whats the meaning behind ‘high on the hog’:) loved the newest video, i hate those kind of games that draw you in then scare the shit out of you…not my thing
You don’t want poor li’l Marina to burn out do you? The vids’ll become a chore to do and all the life will go out of em. … and then we’ll begin to hate her for having such little respect for us. … and then we’ll start grumbling and wanting our money back. .. and then the gathering in groups with pitchforks and burning brands will start .. and it’ll all end in storming the castle .. and no good will come of that, will it!?
John Henry Anderson was born in The Mearns, Aberdeenshire, Scotland on 14 July in 1814.
…
It is thought that John Henry Anderson was the first magician to pull a white rabbit from a black top hat.
I wonder if that implies he was the first to pull any kind of a rabbit from any kind of hat of any color? … or not?
Hi HotForWords. My request is more for a phrase than actual word.
I always use the phrase, “It’s the bee’s knees,” but have no idea where it comes from.
Can you shed some light on this?
Thanks again and you’re awesome!
Those rose petals remind me of the murder-imminent scene in “The Fugitive” wherein Sela Ward strews rose petals up and down the staircase to entice Harrison Ford, her husband, when he comes back from surgery.
Marina some of the words I believe you are looking for would be verbose, rambling, long-winded, etc.
You almost looked like you were going to pithy in your panthys in that last scene. Never do that kind of stuff when you’ve been drinking! (Don’t ask me how I know!)
hello i was at my boyfriends house and i asked him a question he told me ” no way hose!” where did the saying come from and who is hose?? haha
thanks hotforwords you are very smart
Marina,
For the homework my answers are:
☺ nonpithy (lol)
☺ verbose
But I would like to request the word “stalker.” I know you probably have some now that you post videos but did people used to hide in corn stalks or something help me out! Thanks

Marina, I was wondering if you are ever going to do the guess the word lessons again. I enjoyed them. I liked doing all of you word games. So will you be doing any of them again? Please
Part of the problem is based on an attempt to align words with what people thought were their Latin roots, so false etymologies are part of the reason I am such a bad speller.
IN-SATI-ABILIS in Latin = UN-SATISFI-ABLE
The root is SATI-/SATU- “fed up, full with food”.
The English word SAD is the same root because in Anglo-saxon SAD meant “with a full belly”. Like in modern German SAT or in modern Russian SYT = СЫТ
Since Stalin’s nickname was Koba and Stalin was known as “the boss”, my guess is that either her kid brother or her students in Russia gave her that nickname. I better sit down, here comes Koba the boss.
Are you talking about our Marina?
She’s so sweet she gives me a cavity just watching her videos.
For a “Hot Chick” she is oddly nice to people that can do nothing for her.
Maybe growing up in Russia helped.
It is amazing how good looking I get to the ordinary ” Hot Chick ” when my wallet comes out. XD
I have to think Her nick name has to do with Her being a do-gooder.
Jack asked her earlier maybe she will answer him?
Well, being “the boss” means she is in control, which means she is no pushover and she can still be a do-gooder and be kind and respectful to everyone which means she respects and values herself. Now, that is Hot!! Wouldn’t you agree?
The root is Latin and connected to VEHICLE :
In latin VEHERE means TO MOVE.
This root is the same in WAY “place where you move” or WAGON “moving thing”.
Latin languages, Germanic languages and Slavic langages are cousins etymologically speaking.
Yea I got the same idea. It looked just like open legs with hands covering up something.
When I look at the front picture with the start bottom on it.
It looked like her hand was covering her…….hoohoo
.then I realized it was just her back.
any other sick-o-s
Am I the only one?
When I look at the front picture with the start bottom on it.
It looked like her hand was covering her…….hoohoo
.then I realized it was just her back.
any other sick-o-s
In physics, pith balls are use to demonstrate electrostatic attraction or repulsion, not unlike the demonstrations using magnetized objects to demonstrate magnetic properties. This web site gives a pithy demonstration in text and pictures as well as video. Pith Balls
My dear teacher,
When I was in 6th grade I had a teacher who had a dog named Sabaka I was wondering if there any one in Russia name their sabaka dog?
Just somethig I was pondering.
Marina, You really got dolled up today. Loved the outfit and necklace. I liked the color of your eye shadow. It looks good on you.
First question, How did you think of starting your web cam when you where playing that maze joke? Second question you normally talk to yourself when making these videos. Third question, where the heck was Kobe? I didn’t hear a peep out of him. I thought he was your guard dog?
That’s what I thought!! Nice one, Cashy! I wrote it too… but, I hadn’t noticed you’d already, ahem, PROFFERED it. I prefer your way of proffering to mine. Teehee… thank you my dear classmate… Nat
The sound effects needs tweeking.
They don’t enhance the video when used while you are talking.
In fact at those times they are annoying and distracting from what you are saying.
When you used them for the names it was over done and couldn’t hear what you were saying.
A strength that over used is a weakness.
I’ve watched it 3 times and still haven’t completely glean your full meaning.
Looks like somebody got had pretty good at the end, don’t worry we’ll protect you.
For your homework, the opposite of “pithy” would be verbose or overworded.
I had learned a different definition for “pithy.” In addition to being brief, “pithy” also had to get to the core, or center of the concept. For example, it would be pithy ti say, “She’s Hot!” Non-pithy would be “She looks so fetching and attractive in that black, off-the-shouder dress, and that lavender dress with black trim was an eyecatcher, too.”
Nice new font for your videos and I hope you manage your photo images better, too. Your dear student, seesixcm6
I liked Love1, but it needs better graphic, and more animation!
I can’t ever be pleased, so if you try, you’ll just end up disappointing yourself, and me! :D
Thank you, Marina. That kiss was the most delightful surprise, but now my heart is jumping around so much, I think I need to double my medication … can I please be excused homework for tonight.
Now I have to try and wipe this silly grin off my face before I go to join my wife.
I wanted to edit out the kiss… and instead, we’d have: Congratulations Bob, your the teacher’s pet today! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA =))
Lucky for you I’m too tired and lazy now
So pithy in an argument is kind of the same as quintessential in an object. Right
?
Another perfect example of what I think Dictionary Girl would do…a FULL definition with etymology…
Great color on you!!
Hi Marina,
The opposite of pithy seems to be verbose, in my opinion. Long-winded might be another possibility as well.

I was wondering were coincidence came from? Oh, and by the way, I’m a “football” fan too. Go Russia!!
Pretty quiet, everyone must be watching the Olympics.
Russia has passed Aust. on the medal tally.
Did you throw something at the tv for Russia passing Australia
No, just divided loyalties.
What the hell , go Russsia.
Speaking of the Beijing Olympics, which sport are you most into Marina? Personally, I prefer basketball, USA guarantees Gold.
All good things are worth waiting for
And we will savor her creation all the more.

opinions can’t be “wrong”, you just have an opinion or you don’t.
statements can be wrong if they don’t match what they state.
In my opinion, the Earth is flat and situated at the center of the universe.
actually, what you said is funny. saying, “pithy” is a waste of letters is implying that it is itself not pithy enough. i laughed.

“Seventh time is the charm.”

The number 7 is a symbol of completion. It is used quite frequently in ancient literature, particular the Bible (7 days of creation, 7 days of marching around Jericho, etc. In Revelation, it is used constantly to show completion or just the right amount.) I guess that the phrase “7th time is the charm” comes from that use.
I would like to know the origin of the word Rendezvous, because I don’t see how it relates to a meeting.
Hey Marina, I’d like to know the origin of the word Universe, if Uni means 3 and Verse is a line in a song?
This is really confusing…
So a unicycle has three wheels??
yeah, ah, “uni” doesn’t mean “three”… that would be “tri”.

And use it for you alt.

I just realised something.

There’s not enough space on the home page spot for all the digits needed in a couple of days.
Oh the headaches of success.
Either that line will wrap, or the word “alone” will need to be dropped.
I still predict for Sunday afternoon, possibly late Sunday or early Monday.
Would just like to say that your site is very cool, keep up the great work! My question isn’t so much a word as a symbol, I would like to find the origin of the dollar sign $. What does the S stand for and the line, and why does it sometimes have 2 lines?
Yeh … the UK pound (£) symbol does that too ..
It’s a handwritten-style “L” (for Libra) crossed (the other direction to the dollar “S”).
Hey Marina! These vids are all vry informative. I was wondering, could you explain the origin and usages of the words Joker and Joke? Thanks.
Priceless!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwjcbrKUzRc
lol … rat monster!
… hmmm … great idea tho .. manufacture cheap labor for MacDonnalds.
Hi Marina!
I would think that the opposite of “pithy” is “rambling” or “beats-around-the-bush”. Hey, have you ever done that one?
And I can’t leave without giving a punchline without the joke:
“Thor? I’m tho thore, I can’t even pith thraight!”
Take care.
I think “beats-around-the-bush” is better than “rambling” because “rambling” is too pithy.
Neither “they” nor anyone else says that. It’s “three’s a charm.”
tt
Marina, I want to know … is it clever to swear?
if your good at it
If my good at it?
This one made me laugh out loud.
Ask aLx!
why? aLx isn’t that fucking smart.
That’s why!
Heyy marina.
I wanted to know why they say.
“Seventh time is the charm.”
Thanks

i request tartan! plzzzzzzzzzzzz
Would you like custard with that?
Hew-Hawing around
Marina,
I love the way you promulgate.
Whenever I see that thumbnail.. I think of porn
Thats funny every time I think of porn I think of thumbnails
you mean this video’s tumbnail? the person rubbing that back? few, than i’m not the only one
I thought i was some dirty perv
looks like something from that tv show you were watching yesterday james
It wasn’t like that!
Wow.. is this some kind of Rorschach inkblot test? What is going on in your mind that you would see that James?!!!
Thats very strange Marina
What’s strange James?
Sickness Quotient: 72%
Your Sickness Quotient of 72% indicates therapy may be useful. ……lol i only saw people kissing a bull and a flying horse
“Sickness Quotient: 82%
Your Sickness Quotient of 82% is definitely something to worry about.”
Sickness quotient 45%.
I am almost well adjusted.
I only need to be Teacher’s pet for another 50 years to be perfect.
He is 16 that’s is all that is on a boys mind at that age. They say people think of sex every seven to ten minutes. More for a younger person. I could be wrong on the times, but I think it’s close.
Marina. The ink test is strange I don’t quite know what it was testing. at least a screamer didnt come up
Well capman now I have thought of sex after your comment!!! Oh I had a sicknedd of 45% but when you know me in person.. Its really alot worse
ummm, would someone please score more than 82%? i can’t be the sickest person around.
i am dang disappointed…
In every ink blot I see my Mother telling me that I won’t amount to much of anything–they’ve invited me to come and spend the night so that they can study me…
hmm… the various demons asked me to bath in the blood of sacrificed goats to cleanse myself and await further instruction. anyone else get that? just wand sl .devil tey dna drows eht yb dednuow saw ohw tsaeb eht fo ronoh ni egami na pu tes ot meht deredro eh .htrae eht fo stnatibahni eht devieced eh ,tsaeb tsrif eht fo flaheb no od ot rewop nevig saw eh sngis eht fo esuaceb.
It’s so very fitting that you chose to write about the Rorchach, when our assignment was to tell the opposite of pith
None of it is very clear, concise, or conscientious.
As Buzz said, the big R is a projective test used rarely by the majority of psychologists. This PARTICULAR test is a stripped out version. The real thing has different image qualities and does NOT give you a multiple array of choices. Plus, the interpretation they give you here is interesting, but is for entertainment purposes only
So, no worries if it said you are “sick” or something, and thanks for the entertainment, Marina!!!
)
(And James, who inspired her
So……… She was just testing us.
It seemed to be a little suggestive to just be random.
Could it be a syck-test for the next TA.
What is really on your mind??
No pervs need apply
Sickk. Not in a cool way
It seems that everyone that takes this test is somehow off there rocker in one form or another.
Little Johnny’s teacher asked him if he knew what pith was.
He said “Yeth mam.”
Jeez! .. that’s an awful, awful joke, mate. You should be ashamed. (..just awful)
I bet you laughed.
I may have grimaced a little. … I definitely felt a little queasy.
… however .. sometimes a joke is so bad it’s good.
e.g.
question: What’s brown and sticky?
answer: A stick.
mijj, you have made me laugh four times today.
anyone interested in the origin of the word hello might like check …
[YouTube: QI - Origin of "Hello"]
HERE is the link it was in her list of lessons
oh .. it didn’t occur to me M might have done “hello”.
I stumbled on the QI clip when i was searching for a clip of their discussion of “the dog’s bollocks”. (which i couldn’t find.)
I guess great QI and Marina minds think alike.
i’ve never run across that program before, cool.
Marina, your most interesting lesson raises another question. Pity has such a different meaning than pithy. So where does pity come from?
Right thats it.. I have had enough.. I am doing re installing windows… AGIAN!!!!!! I need movie maker back … So i had better start writing my programs down .. Bye sony vegas!
i much prefer sony vegas to wmm! wmm always crashes and needs weird codec things to use my files from my video camera.
sony vegas is the bees knees
PLUS here are some smilies.
It would be ok if I could do a 15 second clip without it being 315 mb long
Is this the misscupcake that did the hotforwords impersonation on youtube by the way?
G’Day misscupcake again, I also use Sony Vegas and it is great.
James, you just have to learn how to render your videos. You can render to many formats and compressions. A 15 sec clip can be rendered as small as 48 KB and a decent quality version is only 1 MB.
Nero 8 Ultra works pretty good…
LOL
i dunno how to make it reply to your most recent comment so im replying to this one again
thanks for making me feel famous LOL
yes its THE misscupcake who impersonated marina. marina is my fave to impersonate cos shes gorgeous and when i impersonate someone i begin to become them in a way, so i feel very good when i think im like marina.

you must have settings wrong if vegas is making your files really large. vegas is very powerful and worth the effort to become accustomed to! i had that problem too, but i fixed it.
when i render files, theres some options around there.
i forget what i did, but i know i changed it to save the file types as ‘mpeg2′ or something like that. i think the word ‘compressed’ might be in there? just play around with the different file types to find what works for you.
maybe that will help?
xox
some more smilies:
what is it with you and the smiley crap?
aLx.. be nice
! Misscupcake.. don’t mind aLx.. lately he’s been complaining about all the smileys! Maybe he’s angry about something? Here.. I’m going to set him over the edge:
smilies are super awesome!
entschuldigung. sie sind sehr gut und wunderbah!
OMG Misscupcake.. You do make me laugh.. I only subscribed to you yesterday aswell. You did it well
how about a link to that impersonation, misscupcake?
… puh…leeeeze?
Lets all smile together and let everyone know it!!!
i be nice. :X
(p11, let it go …)
I just think we need more smiley choices.
p11, you don’t even use them. oh well … here … coffee’s on me. :X
WOO GO WITH THE SMILEYS MARINA!!!
aLx – maybe I don’t use them often because the right smiley is unavailable.
And, I’d include a pithy picture, but I don’t know what html code to use. So, in short, fuck you.
aLx, suspected of murder.
Was that Marina making fun of aLx?
X 10000 for aLx
There is hope for her yet.
Maybe …Her sister got a hold of her password??
Now if I can get her to tell us why the hell her nick name is Koba??
LOL smilies are a visual assault on the mind?
i see what youre trying to say;because smilies DO in fact change the whole conotation of a sentence or paragraph.
which is exactly why i love them so much. things can be so easily misread but smilies can help everything be happy
AND. to the person who wanted a link to my impersonation of marina/hotforwords… my html skills are rusty but heres my attempt at creating a link for you:
my most recent impersonation of marina
ive done a few marina videos but thats the most recent.

word request:inarticulate

Is anyone wearing a pith helmet?
Some people seem to think that, as reining Teacher’s Pet, I have some kind of influence and have asked me to request the meaning of your nickname, Koba.
Well, never let it be said that I am too proud to help the less fortunate, so please reveal the secret.
I don’t want to use it until I know that it’s not derogatory.
Ending sentences with prepositions are we Bob?
Touché.
Although the sentence is informal, it certainly is grammatically correct as it has an object “what”. The more formal “Of what were you thinking?”, just sounds to formal in many contexts.
“of what were you thinking” is correct… it just is
To be really pedantic, I suppose I should have written, “Is this that of which you were thinking?”
But then some smartarse would have said, “How can this be that? This is this and that is that, and never the twain shall be the same.”
Ending sentences in a preposition? That is something up with which I will not put.
Ahhh, prospero811, you are a golfer, but you won’t putt? OK, OK, I missed the other “o” in “to formal” above. Dang, if it isn’t spelling, it’s grandma. What is one going to do?
A ridiculous rule that was wrong to begin with, and to perpetuate it only turns sentences inside out and upside down
think about language, not its side effects.
Im fed up with all this. Im going to talk like a commoner now. F&ck da grammar init
No really, not kidding it was a false rule to begin with. The silly vicor who wrote the rule didn’t have a clue & he was a commoner.
aLx – take your new age English claptrap and sell it to somebody else.
Give it up Bob, now that she knows I want to know it’s not going to happen.
I can see her now, her arms and legs crossed, teeth clenched. Cussing me in Russian ….I won’t….I won’t and he can’t make ME.

Homework: the opposite of Pithy.
a pith helmet is a piece of cork used by 19th century soldier to keep the sun off their head it was rubbish for protection you can put most things through it. i own one and it bends and bends. i can tell you that you have to be careful with them.
i was wondering how do i put a video comment on here.
answer hell of a lot stronger than the piece of soft rubbish i wear u mite as well try putting a pin through it and itd go through not reliable at all

some people still dont know what means words like: lol, lmao, mwah…
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Appendix:Internet_slang
thank u
I got a word for you
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cc7V6DTATdw&feature=related
The word is Babble/Bubble … i asked 279 people… and they said its babble…
So.. what is babble anyway?
someone mentioned below, about the phrase ‘the bees knees’
and what about ‘the cats pyjamas?!?’
what about… the icing on the cake. or cupcake.
hehe!
i like this website.
oh .. i like those picturesque ones ..
“the bees knees”
“the cat’s pyjamas”
… plus, how about … {koff}
“the dog’s bollocks” (which is brit for “absolutely the most supremely brilliant”)
“the dog’s bollocks” :
example:
“i saw the Dark Knight the other day. It’s the dog’s bollocks!”.
LOL gordon ramsay says things like ‘that meal is bollocks’
its funny how bollocks alone insinuates something is bad or untruthful or yuck. but saying the phrase ‘the dogs bollocks’ indicates something is fantastic! hehe
in australia we say ‘you bloody beauty’
well, the stereptype aussies do LOL.
oh my god i cant believe what ive done. i just posted a comment without one smilie in it.
heres compensation:
actually .. that dog’s bollocks thing …
.. i know the origin of that thanks to the tv prog QI
(that’s cheating, i guess: asking the question but knowing the answer.)
Here’s an example clip of QI, btw: [YouTube: QI - Origin of "Hello"]
… anyway
the dog’s bollocks had a (non-obvious) partner phrase: bog standard.
These both have a common origin.
Way back in the mists of time, in the UK, a company called Meccanno produced construction kits for children (strips of metal with holes, nuts, bolts, etc).
One was Box: Standard which induced the phrase bog standard into the brit language (meaning average).
Another was Box: Deluxe which induced the phrase dog’s bollocks into the brit language (meaning supreme first class, etc).
oh, btw .. i was saddened by the lack of smileys in your first response.
hahaha i was also saddenedby my lack of smilies. hence why i felt compelled to leave another comment fulled with smilies YAY!
i want to design a cupcake emoticon so i can use it
hehe
hey marina, i checked your bio but it doesnt say when your birthday is
can i know?
then i can make you a cupcake
Missy all we know it’s in December. She want give us a day number
I noticed something new the “interviews” button
The antonym for pithy is verbose or wordy. A synonym for pithy could be K.I.S.S.
K.I.S.S. would be a synacronym, which leads me to a word request – Tmesis, the only word in the English language to start with the letters tm.
why yes.. I am doing a video at the moment
Dear HotForWords I have a word request. I was wondering if ‘K9′ or ‘K-9′ somehow originates from ‘canine’ and was also wondering the origin of that word too
is the opposite take your time
I have a request for a phrase rather than a word…whats the meaning behind ‘high on the hog’:) loved the newest video, i hate those kind of games that draw you in then scare the shit out of you…not my thing
??Another day with no word from our dear teacher??
She is too trusting in her students not to raise a ruckus.
woah!
is it a good idea to expect a new vid each day?
You don’t want poor li’l Marina to burn out do you? The vids’ll become a chore to do and all the life will go out of em. … and then we’ll begin to hate her for having such little respect for us. … and then we’ll start grumbling and wanting our money back. .. and then the gathering in groups with pitchforks and burning brands will start .. and it’ll all end in storming the castle .. and no good will come of that, will it!?
oh .. hang on …
you said “Another day with no word from our dear teacher??”
… please ignore the above rant.
no worries
Request: what’s the origin of the meaning “Pulling the rabbit out of the magic hat”/
THIS WILL help
Cool! I can live with that. Yes I like Rocky and Bullwinkle.
according to this site … [about aberdeen - John Henry Anderson]
I wonder if that implies he was the first to pull any kind of a rabbit from any kind of hat of any color? … or not?
New word request : pattern………………….looking at these boxes around the replies they resemble documents and letters and checks.
Hey Hotforwords, my request is for the word “bloke”. I hear it used a lot over in Britain, and I would like to know the origin of it.
Was that The Linda Blair Witch Project?
Hi HotForWords. My request is more for a phrase than actual word.
I always use the phrase, “It’s the bee’s knees,” but have no idea where it comes from.
Can you shed some light on this?
Thanks again and you’re awesome!
Kinda like the lemur’s femur.
(Don’t ask me how I know!)
words request: cono, babiidm, Táhirih
Opposite of pithy: Nebulous.
Where did the expression “Miss Goodie Two-shoes” come from? Was she a character in a story I missed out on as a kid?
I’d like to know where does the word “Baller” as it portrays to a skilled Athlete in Football or Basketball
And I’d like to be the next Teacher’s Pet for my B-Day this Friday
hello i was at my boyfriends house and i asked him a question he told me ” no way hose!” where did the saying come from and who is hose?? haha
thanks hotforwords you are very smart
Marina,
For the homework my answers are:
☺ nonpithy (lol)
☺ verbose
But I would like to request the word “stalker.” I know you probably have some now that you post videos but did people used to hide in corn stalks or something help me out! Thanks
-Léon
Marina, I was wondering if you are ever going to do the guess the word lessons again. I enjoyed them. I liked doing all of you word games. So will you be doing any of them again?
Please
Interesting article in the Economist about the difficluties in spelling in English:
http://www.economist.com/world/britain/displaystory.cfm?story_id=11920829
Part of the problem is based on an attempt to align words with what people thought were their Latin roots, so false etymologies are part of the reason I am such a bad speller.
Now I have an excuse
Marina, fo my homework I would have to be vague with the answer, or just beat around the bush. Oh just forget the homework.
To be pithy about the homework, I’ll venture a guess in just one word. Is the opposite of ‘pithy’:
“prolix”?
Why does pro-lix mean verbose? Pro (for, or forward — I think) and Lix? What is LIX? Is it related to LEX (as in LEXICON?)???
Thank you my dear teacher,
Natalia Whilk (Nat)
PROLIX comes from Latin PRO-LIQUERE “to fore-flow” that is to say TO FLOW FORWARDS.
The root of course is LIQUIDUS “liquid, flux”.
PROLIX comes from Latin PRO-LIQUERE “to lick a prostitute”.
{…ahem…}
You always keep it pithy…thanks Marinia!!
Does Marina wear blue color contacts, sometime her eyes look blue, sometime green?
She once said it is due to the light filters on her camera.
Check out her old videos with the close ups of her eyes.
She has amazing blue eyes.
word request: insatiable
IN-SATI-ABILIS in Latin = UN-SATISFI-ABLE
The root is SATI-/SATU- “fed up, full with food”.
The English word SAD is the same root because in Anglo-saxon SAD meant “with a full belly”. Like in modern German SAT or in modern Russian SYT = СЫТ
oops ! German SATT
I hate scary mazes too
Great video though
I pithy the fool
Bob does elicit that reaction at times…
but he grows on ya…’sides, Bob’s got mad moves…
but let’s see…an antonym for pithy?…several come to mind: garrulous, verbose, obtuse, long-winded, coarse…
that reminds me…i wonder why Bob came to Marina’s mind for this particular vid?…
***grabs his pith helmet & runs from incoming and well-deservedlambasts***
luv ya, Bob…

Hi Marina, I’am new to your page can you tell me why your nick name is KOBA. Pretty please…….?? .
This is a picture of me waiting for your answer
haha yeah i dont really know why either?
lol btw nice ending
i did that once XD
Autocrat
That was way too pithy. I’ll be more verbose; Benevolent Autocrat
Word for your word list.
VEX
Vexing
Vexatious
This word has been troubleing me.
The root is Latin and connected to VEHICLE :
In latin VEHERE means TO MOVE.
This root is the same in WAY “place where you move” or WAGON “moving thing”.
Latin languages, Germanic languages and Slavic langages are cousins etymologically speaking.

Hi Marina, I’am new to your page can you tell me why your nick name is KOBA. Pretty please…….?? .
Yea I got the same idea. It looked just like open legs with hands covering up something.
When I look at the front picture with the start bottom on it.

It looked like her hand was covering her…….hoohoo
.then I realized it was just her back.

In physics, pith balls are use to demonstrate electrostatic attraction or repulsion, not unlike the demonstrations using magnetized objects to demonstrate magnetic properties. This web site gives a pithy demonstration in text and pictures as well as video.
Pith Balls
The second shot of the pithy balls looked like the little balls that Mexicans hang on the brim of their hat to keep flys away.
Is that experiment to demonstrate electrostatic attraction or repulsion not replete with double entendre, or do I just have a dirty mind?
I know I thought that after too
but maybe she doesn’t remember me.
I am only one of 200,000 + fans.
These are what pithballs do http://apwww.stmarys.ca/demos/content/e_and_m/pith_balls/pith_balls.html
Pith balls were used by prostitutes of old as a form of birth control.
That f’king maze game scarred the hell out of me as well lol.
I had my big macho son do it too and he jumped out his skin.
Then got pissed off at me for playing a trick on him.
Marina how can I post a video request
That’s a good question. Do we do it here or on YT?
At Youtube ……hey, ask her why Koba while your at it.
Dose one post it as a video response to one of her lessons?
TUTORIAL; how to video respond to Marina. It would be very cool if she got hundreds of video responses too.
James go to the top menu bar and you will see the second tab is request a word. Use that tab.
Thank you
My dear teacher,
When I was in 6th grade I had a teacher who had a dog named Sabaka I was wondering if there any one in Russia name their sabaka dog?
Just somethig I was pondering.
Marina, You really got dolled up today.
Loved the outfit and necklace. I liked the color of your eye shadow. It looks good on you.
First question, How did you think of starting your web cam when you where playing that maze joke? Second question you normally talk to yourself when making these videos. Third question, where the heck was Kobe? I didn’t hear a peep out of him. I thought he was your guard dog?
Oh thanks cj. You just spoiled it for me
What the hell are you talking about James? ( The man who eats with fingers)
Marina,
Fourth question, You haven’t mention where your nickname came about.
Can I Proffer ‘Prolix’ as a cogent antonym of ‘Pithy’
That’s what I thought!! Nice one, Cashy! I wrote it too… but, I hadn’t noticed you’d already, ahem, PROFFERED it. I prefer your way of proffering to mine. Teehee… thank you my dear classmate… Nat
Cheers,
I felt it was felicitously succinct.
I would say the countrary of PITHY is VACUOUS.
or VOID ?
The sound effects needs tweeking.

They don’t enhance the video when used while you are talking.
In fact at those times they are annoying and distracting from what you are saying.
When you used them for the names it was over done and couldn’t hear what you were saying.
A strength that over used is a weakness.
