I’ve been known to sport the “bedhead”, not that anyone would aim for that hair style.

Where does “mullet” come from? I know “skullet” is a modification of that term for the follically challenged mullet wearers, but who ever named a hair style a mullet?

I don’t know the name for my hairstyle. It’s beyond curly, but it’s not a ‘fro. Similar to David’s hair (son of Captain Kirk), or the father on the Brady Bunch, or Michelangelo’s David. Any suggestions?

Actually, I can read this easily AND see the individual letters as I read. In 5th Grade, I beat the entire school (including the 6th Graders) in a spelling bee contest. I’ve always found spelling to be both easy and interesting. I simply cannot read a word without also looking at the letters that compose it. Maybe my mind workds twice as hard when it reads.

When I was a kid, my mother would tell me to “Mind my P’s and Q’s” before any big social situation. I never knew what it actually ment, just thought is was the kind of thing moms say.

In English pubs, ale is ordered by pints and quarts… So in old England , when customers got unruly, the bartender would yell at them “Mind your pints and quarts, and settle down.”

It’s where we get the phrase “mind your P’s and Q’s”

smart hotties, part 3 : Delia Derbyshire

We already have Marina, and [YouTube: Siouxie Sioux],

    there’s also Delia Derbyshire.

She’s the one who transformed a dots-on-paper music manuscript into this ear candy
[YouTube: Doctor Who - Original Theme Music Video]
    in 1963.

Interesting: despite having a degree in Music and Mathematics from Cambridge Uni, she was denied work (in 1959) at Decca records because they didn’t employ women in their recording studios.

ps. she’s independently minded, brainy and creative, so she’s bound to be a hottie.

Oh!! .. i just found this inteview with Delia Derbyshire on YouTube
[YouTube: Delia Derbyshire Radio Scotland interview]
    .. (isn’t YouTube marvellous)!!

buzzword replied on August 23rd, 2008 7:18 pm:

seriously that is some cool shit. fucking hot. good stuff…

by the way, i’ve got morton subotnick’s, silver apples on the moon, on vinyl. what other shit, genres, do you listen to? doctor who, are you english?

mijj replied on August 23rd, 2008 9:08 pm:

I’ll just post this while i put together a considered reply …

i liked a lot (of what we call “krautrock”) from the 70s.

this is from the 1972 album, Wolf City by Amon Duul …
[Deutche Nepal] - this is sooooo chilling. sort of majestic evil.

mijj replied on August 23rd, 2008 9:45 pm:

    yup .. i’m a brit.

I guess if you’ve never seen that QI tv program (i.e. that youtube clip where they discussed the origin of “hello”) then you’re not a brit.

that dr. who music is stunning isn’t it .. perfect mix of mystery, eeriness and excited energy. She took that kind of experimental electronic music out of the intellectual sphere into plain daylight.

category wise .. i think i gravitate to energetic, psychedelia, anything striking whacky creating intense atmospheres. .. a lot of early 60’s pre psychedelic, and, i guess, psychedelic before it took itself seriously
(excellent example: [Beck's Bolero (extended version)1966] - i love this track).
.. early UK punk (i think US punk was on the intelectual side.)

i tend to dig around within the genres cos, lets face it, you have to listen to loads of iffy stuff before you find a gem (e.g. Siouxie Sioux :))

What other music .. I loved the Syd Barret Pink Floyd, and Pink Floyd upto and including, but not beyond Dark Side of the Moon.
    (Echoes, Ummagumma = brilliant).

erm .. some (what was called over here) krautrock in the 70s.
.. Amon Duul (esp tracks :
    Race From Here to Your Ears - can’t remember what that was from;
[Wolf city] - sorry about the visuals .. it’s all i could find.)
    - oh .. Cosmic Jokers .. the band that didn’t know it existed!

Can (Future Days title track is one of my all time favorites),
    Tangerine Dream,
Faust (Faust Tapes!!! … el primo!! … zany!! .. a collection of experiments with sounds and a couple of normalish sung tracks - unbelievably top selling album when it came out in the UK - 72 i think. I guess cos we were all brought up listening to that Dr Who intro music.)

erm .. Jimi Hendrix, Captain Beefheart (on reflection, i generally am not drawn to american music .. Captain Beefheart and Jimi Hendrix are definite exceptions.)

i’m completely unaware of anything that happened after punk. got beyond me i guess. - oh .. Cocteau Twins .. i like the singer’s habit of making up sounds instead using words - i mean … how often do people listen to the lyrics.

    {… drones on for hours .. falls asleep and drools on keyboard …}

mijj replied on August 23rd, 2008 10:00 pm:

oops .. i forgot the faust tapes link …
[Untitled16-19 / Faust Tapes] - a nice segment from the album.

may as well bung in the others ..
    [Wolf city] - embarrassing visuals.)
    [Beck's Bolero (extended version)1966]
[Captain Beefheart - Bat Chain Puller] - he likes to bung in weird time signature stuff.

you may want to check with aLx for some music recommendations. aLx is pretty cool, he’s a linguistics and philosophy student, east germany. he’s into a lot of different stuff. oh, yeah. i’m from the u.s. was an anthropology student working on my masters, now switching careers, 37 wife, three kids. there are only a few of us that have been here for a while. me, aLx, prospero811… bob. hey, you didn’t ask for a hfw history did you?

kraftwerk, yeah found them in the early 90’s, great stuff. you have an interesting blend of music, some of it very organic, earthy, intuitive other stuff more technological, minimal, cerebral. checking out the stuff you listed and related material. this is going to be good. looking forward to future correspondence. really digging the shit your posting.

    my background is :
I did general manual labouring type work for a few years while i did whatever i wished .. then i got weary of that and went back to get educated:
… i got an control systems engineering degree and a started a stupefyingly dreary phd … and dropped out :)

then got a job at the BT (telecom) research labs in speech synthesis
.. then got pissed off (annoyed) and went into management within BT
.. and then got ground down by that and dropped out :)

.. then became a student again
…i got a postgrad diploma in computational maths
.. but it was for entertainment ..
.. so now i’m kicking my heels.

i’m considering getting educated in websitey stuff and making myself useful.

fortunately, i have no responsibilities. So, as long as i don’t feel any desire for wealth, it’s a luxurious time. (considering possibilities with no pressures is a pleasant luxury)

    ——-

    ANYHOOOOOO … !!!

yeh .. kraftwerk are at that crossover between art and music.
I orininally heard them way back when they first released Autobahn .. but i thought it was a bit thin and didn’t “get” it. I much preferred Tangerine Dream’s Phaedra and Rubycon.

As far as psychedelia goes .. (for me) the pinnacles are early Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix.

ps. Captain Beefheart did a lot of stuff that was weird in that it tended to throw you off the rhythmic balance. It’s one of those things that’s sort of odd and grating til you suddenly “get” it .. and then it’s a world of its own. .. and .. oh yeh .. his style is, he’s not so much a singer as a poet interwoven with backing music.

ok … I’m going to dip out to check the links

mijj replied on August 24th, 2008 9:52 pm:

oh yeh .. my “US punks were intellectual” …

… well .. my impression is, the US bunch had a philosophy, whereas the UK lot were just in it for the chaos and destruction.

ps. … did you see the Dark Knight?

.. apparently the Joker characteristics were based on :
[Sid Viscious of the Sex Pistols]
    and
[Alex of the Clockwork Orange] (a sort of proto-punk).

mijj replied on August 24th, 2008 10:31 pm:

Test Dept. - Total State Machine
    !! .. stellar .. !!

Tom Waits - I Don’t Want To Grow Up
    - meh .. acquired taste, methinks .. like C.Beefheart

Nick Cave & P.J Harvey -Henry Lee
    - confused me .. some of it i found instantly likeable, others, not so much. I kept being distracted by how close to death the girl seemed to be. - and i dint like that guy poking his finger at me!! (grrr)

Jill Scott & the Roots - You got Me
!! .. another instant hit .. yes .. great in fact. - outstanding. :) Wow! .. that was brilliant!

    Beck - Gamma Ray
    - It sounds ok .. but i’d have to listen to it a few times to hook into it.

funny thing is .. if it sounds like someone throwing a load of old pots and pans down the stairs i have a lot easier time getting into it than if it’s something like a normal song.

If anyone is in helpful mode I have been trying to get a “gravatar”, but no matter what image I select all I get is a black square. Can someone send me in the right direction for help please? Thanks.

pedantickarl replied on August 23rd, 2008 9:06 am:

I had that problem which occurs when you do the CROP & FINISH improperly right after the image upload.

Upload your image again, then, when you do the CROP, make sure that your cursor is still on the picture when you let go of the mouse button. Monitor the results in the Preview. Once your image is correct, then click Finish.

pedantickarl replied on August 23rd, 2008 10:17 am:

Also, if you did everything correctly, but rated your gravatar an “X”, then it will also show up as black.

Look Kilroy is here. Good one Karl.

checmark replied on August 23rd, 2008 7:07 pm:

I did all that and the small and large previews show just fine, but then when I click to finish it is just a black square. I also rated it “G” so that shouldn’t be an issue.

pedantickarl replied on August 23rd, 2008 8:45 pm:

Maybe it’s the type of image that’s messing it up. What image type are you uploading; GIF, JPG, BMP, PNG? Can you upload your image to a public site like Flickr? I’ll grab it and try it.

aLx replied on August 23rd, 2008 8:57 pm:

pedantickarl replied on August 24th, 2008 10:45 am:

Hi checmark, your 64x 200 dpi GIF should be OK. Try a different browser; if you are using MSIE, try Firefox or vice versa, assuming you are on Windows. If that fails, send an email to “support at gravatar dot com”

checmark replied on August 24th, 2008 11:27 am:

Thanks, yes, I did send the email when nothing else worked. Hopefully they will solve the mystery of what went wrong.

checmark replied on August 24th, 2008 11:38 am:

Okay, under the heading of “when something doesn’t work, try anything and everything”, I changed the tranparent GIF to a merged image, then did the “crop and finish” again. Nothing different. I had been using the “crop and finish” button below my image but still got nothing but black. Just for the heck of it I used the button above my image and, surprise, surprise, my avatar showed up fine and wasn’t just a black square. I think it actually worked! Hope so.

Where do the expressions come from:

    “Tom, Dick, and Harry”,
    “OK”,
    ” Kilroy was here”,
    “gremlins”

    M in Michigan

pedantickarl replied on August 23rd, 2008 9:57 am:

Kilroy was here? Where? I don’t see him….

    Capman911 replied on August 23rd, 2008 10:30 am:

I remember seeing that Kilroy was here with the half face and hands in a movie Robert Mitchum starred in where he was on an island with a nun hiding in a cave while the Japanese swarmed all over the island looking for him. Now when I hear or see that saying I remember that movie. It was a good movie too.

Hi Gallaghersangel. That is a cool name you made for yourself. I have never heard of either of the two words so I am interested myself in their meaning. Marina will see your request and add them to her list, so give her some time or she may answer you back right away. If you want to look at any of her other lessons go to the Words / Lessons section at the top of the page and it will give you a list of words that she has already done, plus click on that word and it will take you to the video. Have fun.

hey this video was great! i bet hardly anyone would of realised that it used to be a derogatory term for chinese people! interesting!

i wonder why they call it pig tail though, instead of.. ox tail.. or fox tail.. or cat tail.. etc.

maybe the lengths of tobacco were curly? and since pigs have curly tails.. they called it that?

i still wanna know where the word zombie comes from

i wonder which little girl started wearing pig tails to look authorative, but failed and made herself look cute, and then started the trend hehe  everyone likes the video i have of myself with pig tails. but i used them to look younger, not authorative.

ok i think ive typed more than im supposed to LOL

    Also some other haircuts:

    -Fade
    -Taper
    -Ball Taper
    -Ball Fade
    -Bowl Cut
    -Disheveled
    -Braids
    -Corn Rows
    -Dreadlocks
    -Spiky
    -Flat Top
    -Buns
    -Mohawk
    -Slick back

That’s all that I know of right now

    Thank you beautiful Marina

Here is what I see when I try to access them. It used to work about a year ago, then they changed. Same with the BBC, which I understand has to do with contracts with cable and Satellite providers, where the Internet is free viewing, the cable/dish contracts pay money to the BBC.
