I’ve been known to sport the “bedhead”, not that anyone would aim for that hair style.
Where does “mullet” come from? I know “skullet” is a modification of that term for the follically challenged mullet wearers, but who ever named a hair style a mullet?
I don’t know the name for my hairstyle. It’s beyond curly, but it’s not a ‘fro. Similar to David’s hair (son of Captain Kirk), or the father on the Brady Bunch, or Michelangelo’s David. Any suggestions?
It looks weird but believe it or not, you can read it.

When I was a kid, my mother would tell me to “Mind my P’s and Q’s” before any big social situation. I never knew what it actually ment, just thought is was the kind of thing moms say.
Thanks,

In English pubs, ale is ordered by pints and quarts… So in old England , when customers got unruly, the bartender would yell at them “Mind your pints and quarts, and settle down.”
It’s where we get the phrase “mind your P’s and Q’s”
Interesting: despite having a degree in Music and Mathematics from Cambridge Uni, she was denied work (in 1959) at Decca records because they didn’t employ women in their recording studios.
ps. she’s independently minded, brainy and creative, so she’s bound to be a hottie.
I guess if you’ve never seen that QI tv program (i.e. that youtube clip where they discussed the origin of “hello”) then you’re not a brit.
that dr. who music is stunning isn’t it .. perfect mix of mystery, eeriness and excited energy. She took that kind of experimental electronic music out of the intellectual sphere into plain daylight.
category wise .. i think i gravitate to energetic, psychedelia, anything striking whacky creating intense atmospheres. .. a lot of early 60’s pre psychedelic, and, i guess, psychedelic before it took itself seriously
(excellent example: [Beck's Bolero (extended version)1966] – i love this track).
.. early UK punk (i think US punk was on the intelectual side.)
i tend to dig around within the genres cos, lets face it, you have to listen to loads of iffy stuff before you find a gem (e.g. Siouxie Sioux )
What other music .. I loved the Syd Barret Pink Floyd, and Pink Floyd upto and including, but not beyond Dark Side of the Moon.
(Echoes, Ummagumma = brilliant).
erm .. some (what was called over here) krautrock in the 70s.
.. Amon Duul (esp tracks :
Race From Here to Your Ears – can’t remember what that was from; [Wolf city] – sorry about the visuals .. it’s all i could find.)
- oh .. Cosmic Jokers .. the band that didn’t know it existed!
Can (Future Days title track is one of my all time favorites),
Tangerine Dream,
Faust (Faust Tapes!!! … el primo!! … zany!! .. a collection of experiments with sounds and a couple of normalish sung tracks – unbelievably top selling album when it came out in the UK – 72 i think. I guess cos we were all brought up listening to that Dr Who intro music.)
erm .. Jimi Hendrix, Captain Beefheart (on reflection, i generally am not drawn to american music .. Captain Beefheart and Jimi Hendrix are definite exceptions.)
i’m completely unaware of anything that happened after punk. got beyond me i guess. – oh .. Cocteau Twins .. i like the singer’s habit of making up sounds instead using words – i mean … how often do people listen to the lyrics.
Kraftwerk was founded by Florian Schneider who also produced the track Kernkraft 400 of the band Zombie Nation. I love that sport chant remix of Kernkraft 400.
was reading one of your fucking comments. check out my “how to make an f-bomb” on the bisextile comments list. if i recall we, aLx and me, were catching shit for using “fuck” by another commenter. also, marina comes out of the closet in her video.
really digging beck’s bolero. what do you mean by u.s. punk being intellectual? asking, while i’m watching an iggy pop documentary. siouxie is real good. beefheart, hmm… cool. going to try some of this psychedelia stuff. do i need mind altering substances to enjoy listening?
you may want to check with aLx for some music recommendations. aLx is pretty cool, he’s a linguistics and philosophy student, east germany. he’s into a lot of different stuff. oh, yeah. i’m from the u.s. was an anthropology student working on my masters, now switching careers, 37 wife, three kids. there are only a few of us that have been here for a while. me, aLx, prospero811… bob. hey, you didn’t ask for a hfw history did you?
kraftwerk, yeah found them in the early 90’s, great stuff. you have an interesting blend of music, some of it very organic, earthy, intuitive other stuff more technological, minimal, cerebral. checking out the stuff you listed and related material. this is going to be good. looking forward to future correspondence. really digging the shit your posting.
my background is :
I did general manual labouring type work for a few years while i did whatever i wished .. then i got weary of that and went back to get educated:
… i got an control systems engineering degree and a started a stupefyingly dreary phd … and dropped out
then got a job at the BT (telecom) research labs in speech synthesis
.. then got pissed off (annoyed) and went into management within BT
.. and then got ground down by that and dropped out
.. then became a student again
…i got a postgrad diploma in computational maths
.. but it was for entertainment ..
.. so now i’m kicking my heels.
i’m considering getting educated in websitey stuff and making myself useful.
fortunately, i have no responsibilities. So, as long as i don’t feel any desire for wealth, it’s a luxurious time. (considering possibilities with no pressures is a pleasant luxury)
——-
ANYHOOOOOO … !!!
yeh .. kraftwerk are at that crossover between art and music.
I orininally heard them way back when they first released Autobahn .. but i thought it was a bit thin and didn’t “get” it. I much preferred Tangerine Dream’s Phaedra and Rubycon.
As far as psychedelia goes .. (for me) the pinnacles are early Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix.
ps. Captain Beefheart did a lot of stuff that was weird in that it tended to throw you off the rhythmic balance. It’s one of those things that’s sort of odd and grating til you suddenly “get” it .. and then it’s a world of its own. .. and .. oh yeh .. his style is, he’s not so much a singer as a poet interwoven with backing music.
Test Dept. – Total State Machine
!! .. stellar .. !!
Tom Waits – I Don’t Want To Grow Up
- meh .. acquired taste, methinks .. like C.Beefheart
Nick Cave & P.J Harvey -Henry Lee
- confused me .. some of it i found instantly likeable, others, not so much. I kept being distracted by how close to death the girl seemed to be. – and i dint like that guy poking his finger at me!! (grrr)
Jill Scott & the Roots – You got Me
!! .. another instant hit .. yes .. great in fact. – outstanding. Wow! .. that was brilliant!
Beck – Gamma Ray
- It sounds ok .. but i’d have to listen to it a few times to hook into it.
funny thing is .. if it sounds like someone throwing a load of old pots and pans down the stairs i have a lot easier time getting into it than if it’s something like a normal song.
Hey Cashy, I not picking on you, but entomology is the study of insects. Etymology is the study of words, a common mistake because the words look so much a like. I made that same mistake on here at one time and got razzed for a long time. Give Miss M some time as she will add your request to her list.
Eagle eyes Mike but slightly out of focus this time.
I’m profoundly dyslexic so an error such as the one above is not out of the question even with the spell checker turned up to 11. On this occasion however I was being facetious, a stab at irony if you will.

If anyone is in helpful mode I have been trying to get a “gravatar”, but no matter what image I select all I get is a black square. Can someone send me in the right direction for help please? Thanks.
I had that problem which occurs when you do the CROP & FINISH improperly right after the image upload.
Upload your image again, then, when you do the CROP, make sure that your cursor is still on the picture when you let go of the mouse button. Monitor the results in the Preview. Once your image is correct, then click Finish.
I did all that and the small and large previews show just fine, but then when I click to finish it is just a black square. I also rated it “G” so that shouldn’t be an issue.
Maybe it’s the type of image that’s messing it up. What image type are you uploading; GIF, JPG, BMP, PNG? Can you upload your image to a public site like Flickr? I’ll grab it and try it.
Hi checmark, your 64x 200 dpi GIF should be OK. Try a different browser; if you are using MSIE, try Firefox or vice versa, assuming you are on Windows. If that fails, send an email to “support at gravatar dot com”
Okay, under the heading of “when something doesn’t work, try anything and everything”, I changed the tranparent GIF to a merged image, then did the “crop and finish” again. Nothing different. I had been using the “crop and finish” button below my image but still got nothing but black. Just for the heck of it I used the button above my image and, surprise, surprise, my avatar showed up fine and wasn’t just a black square. I think it actually worked! Hope so.
Marina,
Congratulations on exceeding 100 Million views!
I’ve only been a subscriber since July 3rd, so I’m only a small part of your great statistics. Many countries have a smaller population than your stats! Your dear student, seesixcm6
i would like to know the name: LANCIA
its a car perhaps u remember it from peak really in the 80ies against Audi Urquattro… pls say with ure sweet mouth this car name and tell me something about the Lancia inventors 102Years ago
I remember seeing that Kilroy was here with the half face and hands in a movie Robert Mitchum starred in where he was on an island with a nun hiding in a cave while the Japanese swarmed all over the island looking for him. Now when I hear or see that saying I remember that movie. It was a good movie too.
Marina,
:
ALL RIGHT the overnight success!!!
Congradulations!! :smile
100 Million.
A tremendous and very cool achievement.
And THANK YOU for all the wonderful and entertaining lessons.
It’s been a particular and sincere pleasure to be your guest.
Looking forward to many, many more.
Please give your Little White Fluffy Co-Star a nice pat on the head and a treat.
Hi Gallaghersangel. That is a cool name you made for yourself. I have never heard of either of the two words so I am interested myself in their meaning. Marina will see your request and add them to her list, so give her some time or she may answer you back right away. If you want to look at any of her other lessons go to the Words / Lessons section at the top of the page and it will give you a list of words that she has already done, plus click on that word and it will take you to the video. Have fun.
Mike

hey this video was great! i bet hardly anyone would of realised that it used to be a derogatory term for chinese people! interesting!
i wonder why they call it pig tail though, instead of.. ox tail.. or fox tail.. or cat tail.. etc.
maybe the lengths of tobacco were curly? and since pigs have curly tails.. they called it that?
i still wanna know where the word zombie comes from
i wonder which little girl started wearing pig tails to look authorative, but failed and made herself look cute, and then started the trend hehe everyone likes the video i have of myself with pig tails. but i used them to look younger, not authorative.
No limits on typing or clicking , just don’t wear yourself out. Using too many thingys does make an unusual glow from your part of the page… kinda feel like I was just pulled over by a cop. Watch this fullscreen if you don’t have a headache.
The hair authority thing…Size Matters
Yes Billy, Once in a while I temporarily dye my hair red and blue to show my colors. Chris Chelios brought the Stanley Cup with him to Wrigley yesterday. He also threw the 1st pitch and conducted the 7th inning stretch.
What a coincidence, I was going to ask you to fine the origin of the hair cut “line up”. Its kind of like a buzz cut but everything is aligned straight. But why the name “line up”? Please help Marina.
Also some other haircuts:
-Fade
-Taper
-Ball Taper
-Ball Fade
-Bowl Cut
-Disheveled
-Braids
-Corn Rows
-Dreadlocks
-Spiky
-Flat Top
-Buns
-Mohawk
-Slick back
Marina, did you see the TubeMogul chart for Aug 21 – it was 821K views
which messed up my prediction by a day and a half.
Hey aLx, thanks for the Nietzsche update “was mich nicht umbringt…”.
I kind of remember it that way, “umbringt” instead of “tötet”, even though umbringt also means killing.
Here is what I see when I try to access them. It used to work about a year ago, then they changed. Same with the BBC, which I understand has to do with contracts with cable and Satellite providers, where the Internet is free viewing, the cable/dish contracts pay money to the BBC. http://i37.tinypic.com/oqbta8.jpg
Correct, I was not able to see the Heidi video.
You are too funny when you first typed Heide. My friend across town is named Heide. She always emphasizes the “e” as opposed to “i”
this sucks. it sometimes happens on youtube, too. “this video is not available in your region” or something. heide. that reminds me. i got this email somewhere which i meant to … uh …
anyway, i tried to find that heidi klum thing on youtube, couldn’t locate it yet.
Hello Marina, in the contest video, we see you misty eyed, then you yell out, “…get the knife, get out”. Were you watching “Play Misty for Me” by any chance?
My guess is that they will be region free as she isn’t competing with her own theater openings – yet. But, I’m always wrong on predictions, so we’ll let Marina answer.
I think Marina is having too much fun making videos for You Tube to know what region coding is much less deciding on a coding system. And you’re right-region free would be the best way to go. Finally, she should do a TV special or two and then settle down to a weekly TV show. How about it Marina? What do you say?
Please give everyone the meaning of the word “UFO” and how it is used in everyday language. Why does the news media the world over avoid ever talking about it? Inquiring minds want to know!!
Oh,boy!! That is an answer I have never heard. OK,everybody!! I think I just opened the flood gates on this subject. Who else wants to put their two cents worth in? This could get exciting!!
Didn’t that TV show “Sightings” have some great coverages on this subject matter? Come on,people!! How many of you have seen one of these things known as UFO’s? Don’t be shy!!
Vote For Marina Best Weekend Ever Contest
My neighbors just put Marina back in 4th position with 81 Votes
Eleven more votes needed to make it to 3rd position.
Three people voting 5 times will do the trick.
Hi smokey, where do you see where it says 5th? When I click top Voted, I see that Marina’s video is the 4th video from the left.
Thank you for your 5 votes.
Also Marina, some people have contributed their names to our language like George Orwell, who gave us the term “Orwellian”. Have you ever thought that you might give our language the term “Orlovian”, for someone who is a lover of words? Hey! it could happen!
Its good to see that you’ve taken a break with your great U weekend. I did the same recently; as running your own business is a lot of work and I also get no real help from my younger sister…
BTW – I would like to request a phrase “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” – Do u believe this? If u take a very small dose of poison or are subjected to a bit of a toxin will the body adapt and be immune to this foreign substance for the long-term?
Hello #1 Student, what a coincidence, I mentioned that quote a couple of videos back as misscupcake1 has that quote on her YT profile page in German; “Was dich nicht tötet macht dich stark”.
Did you get any feedback from others with regard to your suggestion? Did you contact Marina’s sister to see if she would entertain doing such a video on this quote?
Hi Marina, Where does the term “FIRED” come from? To terminate ones employment is to “FIRE” someone. I have long wonderd about this one.
Thomas
(My login name is pronounced T-A-Bowers215:-)
Yeah, right, Marina. And the schoolgirl outfit with the short skirt is to show your, err, well, I’m sure it shows something!
Have you heard the term “DA” to refer to the men’s hairdos in the 1950’s?
Hairstyles Homework:
The 80’s Lopsided style
The 80’s High Ponytail (usuallly off center and high)
French braid
French Twist
Pixie Cut
Bed Hair (This is an actual style)
Tall Bangs (also from the 80’s)
There is more money to be made in being a hair stylist than just a barber. You do women’s and men’s hair. Plus look at all the blouses you can look down
You wear pigtails to be cutesy and to fit the outfit of the day,and it works! If that seems disrespectful, well,it isn’t meant that way. I saw Your look at about 1:48 when You were explaining, looked to be a “little white lie” judging by the fact that You looked away for a couple seconds.
Has “little white lie” been requested/done yet? I’m asking now please.TY “Boss”.
dude, i swear its based on punks insulting the posers by calling em’ emo after the fucking aggravating comedian emo phillips. i’m telling you we were doing this way back in the day in chicago in the very early 90’s. nobody believes me. i mean if your going to insult somebody why shout out an abbreviated form of, “emotional” doesn’t make any sense. but back then emo phillips was popular and annoying so yeah, calling someone, “emo” was insulting. that’s my story.
Now a days Buzz, as you know people are referring to emo as that, an emotional person. But what you said makes sense. I was drawn up in some fire helmet in the 90’s so I do remember the emo thing back then. We were called idiots or emo’s before 911. While people were running out of burning buildings we were running in as fast as we could. Adrenalin is a wonderful thing, it makes you bullet proof or stupid
Well I am late for class again. But cutting grass takes time. Looks like all of the hair styles have already been spoken for. I am missing something here. Your wearing what we call pony tails which is hair pulled back or to the side and fastened with a scrunchy to look like a pony or horses tail, but you are calling them pigtails I thought a pig tail was the same as braids like the Chinese wore.
In the UK we have a lot of jokes about people from the county of Essex who are supposed, (by the people who make these jokes) to be … hmmm … shall we say unsophisticated.
A ponytail which is pulled tightly back away from the face is thus known as an Essex Facelift.
Dear teacher,
Very very very interesting lesson, inded ! When I was young I had long hairs that I wore in a poney tail. In France we sometimes speak about choucroûte (it is a meal) for a hair cut.
Oh ! Very beautyfull picture, is it a recent one?
Amicalement,
Don Felipe Gonzales
dear hotforwords, i found a longer word than Antidisestablishmentarianism, it is pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis
it would be very helpful if you would make a video to my word.
Well, she alluded to that word in her “floccinaucinihilipillification” video. It has to do with a lung disease caused by breathing in silicous volcanic dust. The word was made up for the sake being a long word and isn’t really used by the medical world.
Dear Marina, to show us who’s the boss, that opening image where you wear that tiny white top and a batch of bangles: well, it proves you’re the boss because you have three hands! Who could top that?
For your homework:
Bird’s nest = a person with messy hair.
Cow lick = patch of hair at rear center that grows straight out (I still have one.)
Crew cut = hair cut short on top so it stands on end and shaped into a flat top.
Jarhead = short crewcut with shaved sides used by Marines.
Military cut = short hair cut, part on left side, only.
Oh, did you mean girl’s hair?
Pony tail = single bunch of hair banded at rear center
Twin Pony tail = two pony tails, one left and one right.
Pigtails = Usually twins and not single, three groups of hair are braided together.
Bee hive = hair is stacked and shaped over the top of her head and the hair is held in place by spray lacquer.
Page boy = Straight hair to below the ear, trimmed straight, with a slight curl and with bangs across the front. Katie Holmes had this.
Updo = hair is collected and shaped behind or above the head.
There’s nothing wrong with long, layered, wavy hair. Jessica Simpson and Heidi Klum often do this. Your dear student, seesixcm6
Actually, I think James was beehiving very well
If only guys could have that much hair without being lashed with a whip… I can handle being lashed with pigtails, just not with whips!!
Your right BoArgMir that word is referred to a Marine not the hair cut. But the haircut on the Marine could be the origin of the word for calling the Marine a jarhead. I think I’ll stick to leatherneck.
BoArgMir, Thanks for the help, and the nice way you brought it up. It’s true that US Marines are called Jarheads. Back in “ye olden dayes” when I was stationed at Ft. Ord, there was a haircut called “jarhead.” I’d only take the military cut, since it got cold out there! seesixcm6
Marina! You said “banned” again.. I love how you say that. when i used to turn on my phone it would say ” I am calling for all forks to be BANNED” Love it
I have a word you haven’t used yet and it might be really fun to discover the origin and when the word was made. My word is Uncle. Not uncle as in you parents brother or sister but uncle as the game where you hurt each other and the person who says uncle loses.
Maybe this video will help a little. It comes from Marina’s archive videos. You can find them at the top of the page under Words / Lessons. Just click om the link to take you to a video.
Mike
Do we dare assume that the young girl at time 0:38 in the investigation cut away is about to have 100 million views?
The name for my hair style “Short” and I do it for freedom to be cool like the Fonze.
I take a shower and scratch my head, I pick up a comb and look into the mirror, HEYYYY it’s purrrfect already.
OK, pigtails are a sign of authority, but what about poney-tails? how did the tail of a poney end up being a hairstyle? and is it a synonym for pigtails? thanks.
What has videos got to do with armpit? I have never hear anyone request armpit. Sounds daft.. How could marina possibly do a thumbnail? I don’t think she ever did armpit modelling
!Oh Contrare, mon frere! It’s not as easy to figure as you say.
Is it REALLY a “pit” in your arm? There’s no hole there. There’s no jagged, rocky edges around the armpit onto which a person can fall and impale themselves. Yes, it stinks like rotten onions stored in a bog when a person doesn’t shower. However, the armpit is merely a conjuncture between the arm and torso, lined with fur to reduce chafing. Nothing about that indicates “pit” to me
The “CHONMAGE” is worn by the japanese and reminds me of the Samurai. Its kinda like a bun on the very top of the head, not to the back of the head like women wear it.
Hey Marina, do something right out of the world with your hair for the next lesson!!
For 17 years ( since I retired from the Navy ) I have worn my hair in a PONY-TAIL for income tax purposes ( for 20 years I claimed a weekly haircut as a business expense – obviously I did not WANT to have my hair cut ).
While I was growing up my parents wouldn’t let me grow my hair long, nor would the Navy. So now my pony-tail is a symbol of FREEDOM.
That’s interesting. I too wore a ponytail. I didn’t start wearing one until years later when I left the Navy. I grew the thing down to the bottom of my shoulder blades. Then one day I got tired of eating my hair in bed. I had this sexy stylist whack the thing off. I think she had it donated to women with cancer. Now days I can’t stand to have my hair get very long.
When I was 18 I had looong blonde hair to the middle of My back, the chicks dug it! Nowadays I’m 1/2 bald so I keep it short. I miss My hair very much .
One night back in 79 My GF with looong dark hair and I were all buzzed-up and We brushed our hair together,it was a cool lookin, swirly sight on our shoulders/chests. She’s One I miss.
I believe they can dye it after they cut it off. I think the hair will take the color after it is cut off if you wanted to donate it. Or you could dye it on your head then cut it off. Just running off here. Pay no attention to the man with only a little hair left on his head.
oh … i recognise this lot now, thanks to your ref below. i was distracted by the outlandish gear. I should know better.
There’s one track by this lot i liked from way back which i havent heard for years and i have no idea what it’s called. .. i shall peruse youtube and see what i find.
Ponytails!!
[mohawk]
dreds
Who’s the Boss? She’s the Boss!
I was but a student, now I AM THE MASTER!
I’ve been known to sport the “bedhead”, not that anyone would aim for that hair style.
Where does “mullet” come from? I know “skullet” is a modification of that term for the follically challenged mullet wearers, but who ever named a hair style a mullet?
My sister used to wear pigtails when riding the Ford tractor that pulled the brush hog.
I don’t know the name for my hairstyle. It’s beyond curly, but it’s not a ‘fro. Similar to David’s hair (son of Captain Kirk), or the father on the Brady Bunch, or Michelangelo’s David. Any suggestions?
Well I can tell I’ll get an F for this. I’m not good at hair, but er
cornrow, straight, curved, ceasar, flat top side drop, cropped,
Thats it. About the authority thing who’s in charge laugh out loud.

Marina, I once knew a dog like Gucci, his name was Buster however, his last owner did inform me last time we spoke, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSUHxFjcQlQ

How about Mullet? Not that I like this kind of hair style just wanted to know who came up with the name for it. Love your website.
Hello my dear Teacher,
I’d like to know the origin of the word “Hearse”. How comes a funeral car is called a hearse ?
Thanks for the lesson
Hey Marina, I always wondered where the expression “Motherland” referring to Russia came from. investigate plzz

Thanks!

smart hotties, part 3 : Delia Derbyshire
We already have Marina, and [YouTube: Siouxie Sioux],
there’s also Delia Derbyshire.
She’s the one who transformed a dots-on-paper music manuscript into this ear candy
[YouTube: Doctor Who - Original Theme Music Video]
in 1963.
Interesting: despite having a degree in Music and Mathematics from Cambridge Uni, she was denied work (in 1959) at Decca records because they didn’t employ women in their recording studios.
ps. she’s independently minded, brainy and creative, so she’s bound to be a hottie.
Oh!! .. i just found this inteview with Delia Derbyshire on YouTube
[YouTube: Delia Derbyshire Radio Scotland interview]
.. (isn’t YouTube marvellous)!!
seriously that is some cool shit. fucking hot. good stuff…
by the way, i’ve got morton subotnick’s, silver apples on the moon, on vinyl. what other shit, genres, do you listen to? doctor who, are you english?
I’ll just post this while i put together a considered reply …
i liked a lot (of what we call “krautrock”) from the 70s.
this is from the 1972 album, Wolf City by Amon Duul …
[Deutche Nepal] – this is sooooo chilling. sort of majestic evil.
yup .. i’m a brit.
Siouxie Sioux
)
Race From Here to Your Ears – can’t remember what that was from;
[Wolf city] – sorry about the visuals .. it’s all i could find.)
{… drones on for hours .. falls asleep and drools on keyboard …}
oops .. i forgot the faust tapes link …
[Untitled16-19 / Faust Tapes] – a nice segment from the album.
may as well bung in the others ..
[Wolf city] – embarrassing visuals.)
[Beck's Bolero (extended version)1966]
[Captain Beefheart - Bat Chain Puller] – he likes to bung in weird time signature stuff.
!! how could i forget Kraftwerk !!! (i only recently “discovered” this lot)
this is brilliant!! ..
[Kraftwerk - Radioactivity]
Hey buzz and mijj ditto all of the above…
Kraftwerk was founded by Florian Schneider who also produced the track Kernkraft 400 of the band Zombie Nation. I love that sport chant remix of Kernkraft 400.
Here is a short piece of Kernkraft 400 with Techno Viking.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XB5rca-EM5U
hey, i just noticed delia is listed in subotnick’s related video list. cool, cool, cool.
!! .. who’s subotnick ??
lol … {slaps self vigorously …
… maybe if i clicked your link.
oo..oo!
i found [Morton Subotnick - "Sidewinder"]
.. and lots of other stuff by him too!…
… good reccomendation, mr buzz.
eep! .. maybe i shouldn’t slap myself vigorously in public.
yeah, like your missing links, get it “missing links” ah hum…
doesn’t M have rules about terrible puns?
was reading one of your fucking comments. check out my “how to make an f-bomb” on the bisextile comments list. if i recall we, aLx and me, were catching shit for using “fuck” by another commenter. also, marina comes out of the closet in her video.
where’s this bisextile comments list?
oh .. i’m beginning to suspect “bisextile” is a word subject for an M vid!!
d’oh
i just checked the “bisextile” vid ..
… that’s such a pity …
M has sex only once every four years.
really digging beck’s bolero. what do you mean by u.s. punk being intellectual? asking, while i’m watching an iggy pop documentary. siouxie is real good. beefheart, hmm… cool. going to try some of this psychedelia stuff. do i need mind altering substances to enjoy listening?
you may want to check with aLx for some music recommendations. aLx is pretty cool, he’s a linguistics and philosophy student, east germany. he’s into a lot of different stuff. oh, yeah. i’m from the u.s. was an anthropology student working on my masters, now switching careers, 37 wife, three kids. there are only a few of us that have been here for a while. me, aLx, prospero811… bob. hey, you didn’t ask for a hfw history did you?
kraftwerk, yeah found them in the early 90’s, great stuff. you have an interesting blend of music, some of it very organic, earthy, intuitive other stuff more technological, minimal, cerebral. checking out the stuff you listed and related material. this is going to be good. looking forward to future correspondence. really digging the shit your posting.
quick recommendations:

my background is :
It’s one of those things that’s sort of odd and grating til you suddenly “get” it .. and then it’s a world of its own. .. and .. oh yeh .. his style is, he’s not so much a singer as a poet interwoven with backing music.
ok … I’m going to dip out to check the links
oh yeh .. my “US punks were intellectual” …
… well .. my impression is, the US bunch had a philosophy, whereas the UK lot were just in it for the chaos and destruction.
ps. … did you see the Dark Knight?
.. apparently the Joker characteristics were based on :
[Sid Viscious of the Sex Pistols]
and
[Alex of the Clockwork Orange] (a sort of proto-punk).
(grrr)
Jill Scott & the Roots – You got Me
Wow! .. that was brilliant!
!! .. another instant hit .. yes .. great in fact. – outstanding.
Beck – Gamma Ray
- It sounds ok .. but i’d have to listen to it a few times to hook into it.
funny thing is .. if it sounds like someone throwing a load of old pots and pans down the stairs i have a lot easier time getting into it than if it’s something like a normal song.
Id like to know where we got the word “grocery” THANKS! (and of course id like to be teachers pet!)

would u please help me find the origins to the word/phrase ‘ southpaw ‘ ? y are left handers referred to by tht name? thanks!

I would like to know the Entomology of Mrs Malaprop if possible.
Oodles of advanced thanks.
Mwah mwah.
Hey Cashy, I not picking on you, but entomology is the study of insects. Etymology is the study of words, a common mistake because the words look so much a like. I made that same mistake on here at one time and got razzed for a long time. Give Miss M some time as she will add your request to her list.
Mike
Eagle eyes Mike but slightly out of focus this time.
I’m profoundly dyslexic so an error such as the one above is not out of the question even with the spell checker turned up to 11. On this occasion however I was being facetious, a stab at irony if you will.
Thanks for the heads up anyway.
Capman
Been out, what is up with the new look?
Are you a new TA or Ta ??
Did she ever come out and post that Koba is because she is a Boss-y Hot Chic? Never would have thought it.
but anyhow
Yes I am a Ta Jack is still LTA. No she hasn’t mentioned anything about Koba yet. Still waiting for that answer.
Very cool
It’s always good to know someone in the front office

Capman911,
Congratulations on your new and improved position
No more hours mowing your lawn, you need more time for research.
Also, if you did everything correctly, but rated your gravatar an “X”, then it will also show up as black.
Look Kilroy is here. Good one Karl.
I’ll grab it and try it.
he’s got a *.png. humm … better try the same pic as *.jpg or *.gif?
If your image wasn’t a GIF, convert your image to a GIF and try again.
your img is a *.png, too. ;P
uploading directly to Gravatar?
24 bit color
96 dpi resolution
works no problem.
I got the black square when I
tried uploading hi-def images
directly to Gravatar
32 bit color
200 dpi
Thanks everyone. My image is 200 dpi, 64 x 64 GIF.
Hi checmark, your 64x 200 dpi GIF should be OK. Try a different browser; if you are using MSIE, try Firefox or vice versa, assuming you are on Windows. If that fails, send an email to “support at gravatar dot com”
Thanks, yes, I did send the email when nothing else worked. Hopefully they will solve the mystery of what went wrong.
Hope so.

Where do the expressions come from:
“Tom, Dick, and Harry”,
“OK”,
” Kilroy was here”,
“gremlins”
M in Michigan
Kilroy was here? Where? I don’t see him….
I remember seeing that Kilroy was here with the half face and hands in a movie Robert Mitchum starred in where he was on an island with a nun hiding in a cave while the Japanese swarmed all over the island looking for him. Now when I hear or see that saying I remember that movie. It was a good movie too.

Where does the expression “double-cross” come from?

Hi Gallaghersangel. That is a cool name you made for yourself.
I have never heard of either of the two words so I am interested myself in their meaning. Marina will see your request and add them to her list, so give her some time or she may answer you back right away. If you want to look at any of her other lessons go to the Words / Lessons section at the top of the page and it will give you a list of words that she has already done, plus click on that word and it will take you to the video. Have fun.

hey this video was great! i bet hardly anyone would of realised that it used to be a derogatory term for chinese people! interesting!
i wonder why they call it pig tail though, instead of.. ox tail.. or fox tail.. or cat tail.. etc.
maybe the lengths of tobacco were curly? and since pigs have curly tails.. they called it that?
i still wanna know where the word zombie comes from
i wonder which little girl started wearing pig tails to look authorative, but failed and made herself look cute, and then started the trend hehe
everyone likes the video i have of myself with pig tails. but i used them to look younger, not authorative.

Marina, did you see the TubeMogul chart for Aug 21 – it was 821K views

Hey aLx, thanks for the Nietzsche update “was mich nicht umbringt…”.
I kind of remember it that way, “umbringt” instead of “tötet”, even though umbringt also means killing.
Loved that party video. For some reason my video kept freezing at 0:35
Love Europe.
I used to watch videos on clipfish.de but now they block the US. I haven’t found a DE proxy server that works.
they do? huh. why would they do that? globalization can’t be it …
ah, damn. you couldn’t watch the heide klum vid, right? what a drag. she doesn’t show boobs. it’s funny though. it’s a clip for victoria’s secret.
errr … heidi.

Please give everyone the meaning of the word “UFO” and how it is used in everyday language. Why does the news media the world over avoid ever talking about it? Inquiring minds want to know!!
Unidentified Flying Object
term coined in the mid 20th century
Oh, yeah!! They must be those weird things flying around Area 51 in Nevada. What was I thinking? Yikes!! I just saw one!!!
UFO ..
… that is derived from the original …
You F’n Ho
you never heard it? …
That’s because i invented it!!
Wouldn’t that be “YFO”?
well .. that’d imply whoever’d invent such an abusive term would place literacy first. … and I’m not that kind of person.
why fo?
wife-o?
Mijj I like your version better. Every time I get drunk I see YFOs
Big pink elephants.
UFO
Didn’t that TV show “Sightings” have some great coverages on this subject matter? Come on,people!! How many of you have seen one of these things known as UFO’s? Don’t be shy!!
I saw something flying around once that i couldn’t identify. It may have been a wasp, i’m not sure. I guess, technically, that makes it a UFO.
That wasn’t a UFO. It was a UFW (Unidentified Flying Wasp)!
Lots of them flying around too!!

Hi Marina (aka The Boss of HFW)
Its good to see that you’ve taken a break with your great U weekend. I did the same recently; as running your own business is a lot of work and I also get no real help from my younger sister…
BTW – I would like to request a phrase “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” – Do u believe this? If u take a very small dose of poison or are subjected to a bit of a toxin will the body adapt and be immune to this foreign substance for the long-term?

Hello #1 Student, what a coincidence, I mentioned that quote a couple of videos back as misscupcake1 has that quote on her YT profile page in German; “Was dich nicht tötet macht dich stark”.
nietzsche has been misquoted many times.
“aus der kriegsschule des lebens. was mich nicht umbringt, macht mich stärker.“
(f. nietzsche, götzen-dämmerung, sprüche und pfeile, aph. 8.)
Hi Pedantickarl,
Did you get any feedback from others with regard to your suggestion? Did you contact Marina’s sister to see if she would entertain doing such a video on this quote?

-Cornrows
-Dredlocks
I would say more, but Melika & the previous people are the freakin’ bomb of hairstyle info!! Dammit, why didn’t I choose to be a barber
There is more money to be made in being a hair stylist than just a barber. You do women’s and men’s hair. Plus look at all the blouses you can look down
How about word requests for ‘embiggens’ and ‘cromulent’, eh?
… and “craptacular”
I submit to your authority!
Homework: How about the Mullet hairstyle?
my fave! I don’t think so.
I have a word you should do,
helmeting
please do it
Could u please tell me the origin of the word “Skulduggery”?
Thank You
You wear pigtails to be cutesy and to fit the outfit of the day,and it works! If that seems disrespectful, well,it isn’t meant that way. I saw Your look at about 1:48 when You were explaining, looked to be a “little white lie” judging by the fact that You looked away for a couple seconds.
Has “little white lie” been requested/done yet? I’m asking now please.TY “Boss”.
tryant
here in the heart of Dixie, we have kids, and some “dudes,” that wear mohawk haircuts…
and some with ponytails…
if i hit the big city (Atlanta) i can find some who are punked-out…and rarely one shows up in the local high schools (rebellion-hellions, ‘course)…
but it doesn’t matter to me…hairs just an exterior accoutrement…’tis the heart that matters…
oh, and your authority is not judged by your pigtails, Marina…
at least, not your pigtails alone…
annudder
gawd…don’t hit the punk-out link…doesn’t seem to load…
here’s the link, like it matters… http://hair.lovetoknow.com/Image:Punk3.jpg

sure there is! no wait… oh. damn dyslexia.
But you made him look
where does the word “Emo” come from and what does it mean, lots of people have a differant view on it and I would like to know about.
Thankyou
dude, i swear its based on punks insulting the posers by calling em’ emo after the fucking aggravating comedian emo phillips. i’m telling you we were doing this way back in the day in chicago in the very early 90’s. nobody believes me. i mean if your going to insult somebody why shout out an abbreviated form of, “emotional” doesn’t make any sense. but back then emo phillips was popular and annoying so yeah, calling someone, “emo” was insulting. that’s my story.
Emo’s -.- stupid emotional freaks that cut themselves -.-
haha Good 1 foxbow

Well I am late for class again. But cutting grass takes time. Looks like all of the hair styles have already been spoken for. I am missing something here. Your wearing what we call pony tails which is hair pulled back or to the side and fastened with a scrunchy to look like a pony or horses tail, but you are calling them pigtails
I thought a pig tail was the same as braids like the Chinese wore.
Pigtail or Braids
Oops! Don’t use any “parenthesis”, and it works!
Braided Pigtails
In the UK we have a lot of jokes about people from the county of Essex who are supposed, (by the people who make these jokes) to be … hmmm … shall we say unsophisticated.
A ponytail which is pulled tightly back away from the face is thus known as an Essex Facelift.

Hello!
Marina….I’m curious about the phrase “Déjà vu”. I would love to see you do a video on the origin.
BTW, I didn’t have a Déjà vu moment, but a client of mine did. And I thought……….oooohh……..good one for HOTFORWORDS!!
Have a great day
Wow it’s almost like I have seen tihs request before
Wow it’s almost like I have seen tihs request before
I would also like to hear the origin of the word déjà vü. Especially since I have déjà vü moments all the time and they freak me out!
Thanks
me too
dear hotforwords, will you look up the origin of the words curtain or drape. what you hang in front of your window.
thank you
Dear teacher,
Very very very interesting lesson, inded ! When I was young I had long hairs that I wore in a poney tail. In France we sometimes speak about choucroûte (it is a meal) for a hair cut.
Oh ! Very beautyfull picture, is it a recent one?
Amicalement,
Don Felipe Gonzales
dear hotforwords, i found a longer word than Antidisestablishmentarianism, it is pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis
it would be very helpful if you would make a video to my word.
thank you
Well, she alluded to that word in her “floccinaucinihilipillification” video. It has to do with a lung disease caused by breathing in silicous volcanic dust. The word was made up for the sake being a long word and isn’t really used by the medical world.
Homework: skinhead
That’s a Headstyle but not a Hairstyle.
Headstyle or Hairstyle?
Whatever! – but definitely STYLE.
homework: Buzz cut, mullet, crew cut, beehive, bed head, greasy, dreads, flat top, feathered, mohawk, bald.
oops forgot the bowl cut
Your dear student, seesixcm6
a beehive
That’s behiving badly.
Actually, I think James was beehiving very well
If only guys could have that much hair without being lashed with a whip… I can handle being lashed with pigtails, just not with whips!!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jarhead
Jarhead is not a hairstyle. It is a Marine: see the link if you want. Just a friendly correction.
Although after the Jarhead movie, a new hairterm may have started…

Wait oops i said the wrong word i was actually going to say where the word clown comes from.
oh….k….
test
Maybe this video will help a little. It comes from Marina’s archive videos. You can find them at the top of the page under Words / Lessons. Just click om the link to take you to a video.

OK, pigtails are a sign of authority, but what about poney-tails? how did the tail of a poney end up being a hairstyle? and is it a synonym for pigtails?
thanks.
Well toma_calin86… Under every pony tail theres an arse
What are you testing???
I am testing for radon levels
we have a mine here that people from ALL over the world go to sit and breath in radon. Some say it is healthy, me, I think they are daft.
James, and whats below almost every arse?

Ninety percent bald on top ten percent in the back…
Really “Stylin” when sported as a mullet…

Can I request a word? -
Since you make so many video’s, along with other people, I was wondering where the word “armpit” came from.
What has videos got to do with armpit? I have never hear anyone request armpit. Sounds daft.. How could marina possibly do a thumbnail? I don’t think she ever did armpit modelling
way to copy mine except use a retarded word like armpit. the origin is obvious. the pit in your arm. geez.
Nothing about that indicates “pit” to me
Point of contention, whom granted you this authority? Sounds like you need to speak to our father. Sounds like a Samson and Delilah story to me.
Buzz, dreadlocks, pageboy, mullet, pudding basin, ponytail, afro, blunt-cut, straight, wavy, curly
Can I request a word? -
Since you make so many video’s, along with other people, I was wondering where the word video came from.
How many yagerbombs can you drink before you hit the floor
I have tried it but I don’t like the taste of that liquor. I guess I am a beer man.
Cool, leaves more for me
The “CHONMAGE” is worn by the japanese and reminds me of the Samurai. Its kinda like a bun on the very top of the head, not to the back of the head like women wear it.
Hey Marina, do something right out of the world with your hair for the next lesson!!

Beehive…
I say pigtails on every video….I have sort term memory and need to be reminded daily
Your like me Versusx, I have CRS.
Can’t Remember Sh1t.
The Rachel…lol
I keep it in the pony-tail rubberbands unless I’m actually washing it.
If I did cut it off I don’t think there would be that big a call for gray hair. If I do cut it off I’ll check.
I hate using rubber bands. I liked using a scrunchy but had a hard time finding some really small ones that didn’t look feminine.
When I was 18 I had looong blonde hair to the middle of My back, the chicks dug it! Nowadays I’m 1/2 bald so I keep it short. I miss My hair very much
.
Actually, by the time I decide to get rid of it, it will probably have mostly fallen out. C’est la vie.
But if I cut it I will look at donating it.
Thanks for the input.
