I’ve been known to sport the “bedhead”, not that anyone would aim for that hair style.

Where does “mullet” come from? I know “skullet” is a modification of that term for the follically challenged mullet wearers, but who ever named a hair style a mullet?

  3. My sister used to wear pigtails when riding the Ford tractor that pulled the brush hog.

  4. I don’t know the name for my hairstyle. It’s beyond curly, but it’s not a ‘fro. Similar to David’s hair (son of Captain Kirk), or the father on the Brady Bunch, or Michelangelo’s David. Any suggestions?

  5. Well I can tell I’ll get an F for this. I’m not good at hair, but er
cornrow, straight, curved, ceasar, flat top side drop, cropped,

Thats it. About the authority thing who’s in charge laugh out loud.

smart hotties, part 3 : Delia Derbyshire

We already have Marina, and [YouTube: Siouxie Sioux],

    there’s also Delia Derbyshire.

She’s the one who transformed a dots-on-paper music manuscript into this ear candy
[YouTube: Doctor Who - Original Theme Music Video]
    in 1963.

Interesting: despite having a degree in Music and Mathematics from Cambridge Uni, she was denied work (in 1959) at Decca records because they didn’t employ women in their recording studios.

ps. she’s independently minded, brainy and creative, so she’s bound to be a hottie.

Oh!! .. i just found this inteview with Delia Derbyshire on YouTube
[YouTube: Delia Derbyshire Radio Scotland interview]
    .. (isn’t YouTube marvellous)!!

    • buzzword says: 104.1

seriously that is some cool shit. fucking hot. good stuff…

by the way, i’ve got morton subotnick’s, silver apples on the moon, on vinyl. what other shit, genres, do you listen to? doctor who, are you english?

      • mijj says: 104.1.1

I’ll just post this while i put together a considered reply …

i liked a lot (of what we call “krautrock”) from the 70s.

this is from the 1972 album, Wolf City by Amon Duul …
[Deutche Nepal] – this is sooooo chilling. sort of majestic evil.

      • mijj says: 104.1.2

        yup .. i’m a brit.

I guess if you’ve never seen that QI tv program (i.e. that youtube clip where they discussed the origin of “hello”) then you’re not a brit.

that dr. who music is stunning isn’t it .. perfect mix of mystery, eeriness and excited energy. She took that kind of experimental electronic music out of the intellectual sphere into plain daylight.

category wise .. i think i gravitate to energetic, psychedelia, anything striking whacky creating intense atmospheres. .. a lot of early 60’s pre psychedelic, and, i guess, psychedelic before it took itself seriously
(excellent example: [Beck's Bolero (extended version)1966] – i love this track).
.. early UK punk (i think US punk was on the intelectual side.)

i tend to dig around within the genres cos, lets face it, you have to listen to loads of iffy stuff before you find a gem (e.g. Siouxie Sioux :) )

What other music .. I loved the Syd Barret Pink Floyd, and Pink Floyd upto and including, but not beyond Dark Side of the Moon.
        (Echoes, Ummagumma = brilliant).

erm .. some (what was called over here) krautrock in the 70s.
.. Amon Duul (esp tracks :
        Race From Here to Your Ears – can’t remember what that was from;
[Wolf city] – sorry about the visuals .. it’s all i could find.)
        - oh .. Cosmic Jokers .. the band that didn’t know it existed!

Can (Future Days title track is one of my all time favorites),
        Tangerine Dream,
Faust (Faust Tapes!!! … el primo!! … zany!! .. a collection of experiments with sounds and a couple of normalish sung tracks – unbelievably top selling album when it came out in the UK – 72 i think. I guess cos we were all brought up listening to that Dr Who intro music.)

erm .. Jimi Hendrix, Captain Beefheart (on reflection, i generally am not drawn to american music .. Captain Beefheart and Jimi Hendrix are definite exceptions.)

i’m completely unaware of anything that happened after punk. got beyond me i guess. – oh .. Cocteau Twins .. i like the singer’s habit of making up sounds instead using words – i mean … how often do people listen to the lyrics.

        {… drones on for hours .. falls asleep and drools on keyboard …}

      • mijj says: 104.1.3

oops .. i forgot the faust tapes link …
[Untitled16-19 / Faust Tapes] – a nice segment from the album.

may as well bung in the others ..
        [Wolf city] – embarrassing visuals.)
        [Beck's Bolero (extended version)1966]
[Captain Beefheart - Bat Chain Puller] – he likes to bung in weird time signature stuff.

      • mijj says: 104.1.4

!! how could i forget Kraftwerk !!! (i only recently “discovered” this lot)

        this is brilliant!! ..
        [Kraftwerk - Radioactivity]

      • Hey buzz and mijj ditto all of the above…

Kraftwerk was founded by Florian Schneider who also produced the track Kernkraft 400 of the band Zombie Nation. I love that sport chant remix of Kernkraft 400.

Here is a short piece of Kernkraft 400 with Techno Viking.

    • buzzword says: 104.5

really digging beck’s bolero. what do you mean by u.s. punk being intellectual? asking, while i’m watching an iggy pop documentary. siouxie is real good. beefheart, hmm… cool. going to try some of this psychedelia stuff. do i need mind altering substances to enjoy listening?

you may want to check with aLx for some music recommendations. aLx is pretty cool, he’s a linguistics and philosophy student, east germany. he’s into a lot of different stuff. oh, yeah. i’m from the u.s. was an anthropology student working on my masters, now switching careers, 37 wife, three kids. there are only a few of us that have been here for a while. me, aLx, prospero811… bob. hey, you didn’t ask for a hfw history did you?

kraftwerk, yeah found them in the early 90’s, great stuff. you have an interesting blend of music, some of it very organic, earthy, intuitive other stuff more technological, minimal, cerebral. checking out the stuff you listed and related material. this is going to be good. looking forward to future correspondence. really digging the shit your posting.

        my background is :
I did general manual labouring type work for a few years while i did whatever i wished .. then i got weary of that and went back to get educated:
… i got an control systems engineering degree and a started a stupefyingly dreary phd … and dropped out :)

then got a job at the BT (telecom) research labs in speech synthesis
.. then got pissed off (annoyed) and went into management within BT
.. and then got ground down by that and dropped out :)

.. then became a student again
…i got a postgrad diploma in computational maths
.. but it was for entertainment ..
.. so now i’m kicking my heels.

i’m considering getting educated in websitey stuff and making myself useful.

fortunately, i have no responsibilities. So, as long as i don’t feel any desire for wealth, it’s a luxurious time. (considering possibilities with no pressures is a pleasant luxury)

        ——-

        ANYHOOOOOO … !!!

yeh .. kraftwerk are at that crossover between art and music.
I orininally heard them way back when they first released Autobahn .. but i thought it was a bit thin and didn’t “get” it. I much preferred Tangerine Dream’s Phaedra and Rubycon.

As far as psychedelia goes .. (for me) the pinnacles are early Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix.

ps. Captain Beefheart did a lot of stuff that was weird in that it tended to throw you off the rhythmic balance. It’s one of those things that’s sort of odd and grating til you suddenly “get” it .. and then it’s a world of its own. .. and .. oh yeh .. his style is, he’s not so much a singer as a poet interwoven with backing music.

ok … I’m going to dip out to check the links

      • mijj says: 104.5.2

oh yeh .. my “US punks were intellectual” …

… well .. my impression is, the US bunch had a philosophy, whereas the UK lot were just in it for the chaos and destruction.

ps. … did you see the Dark Knight?

.. apparently the Joker characteristics were based on :
[Sid Viscious of the Sex Pistols]
        and
[Alex of the Clockwork Orange] (a sort of proto-punk).

      • mijj says: 104.5.3

Test Dept. – Total State Machine
        !! .. stellar .. !!

Tom Waits – I Don’t Want To Grow Up
        - meh .. acquired taste, methinks .. like C.Beefheart

Nick Cave & P.J Harvey -Henry Lee
        - confused me .. some of it i found instantly likeable, others, not so much. I kept being distracted by how close to death the girl seemed to be. – and i dint like that guy poking his finger at me!! (grrr)

Jill Scott & the Roots – You got Me
!! .. another instant hit .. yes .. great in fact. – outstanding. :) Wow! .. that was brilliant!

        Beck – Gamma Ray
        - It sounds ok .. but i’d have to listen to it a few times to hook into it.

funny thing is .. if it sounds like someone throwing a load of old pots and pans down the stairs i have a lot easier time getting into it than if it’s something like a normal song.

You wear pigtails to be cutesy and to fit the outfit of the day,and it works! If that seems disrespectful, well,it isn’t meant that way. I saw Your look at about 1:48 when You were explaining, looked to be a “little white lie” judging by the fact that You looked away for a couple seconds.

Has “little white lie” been requested/done yet? I’m asking now please.TY “Boss”.

but it doesn’t matter to me…hairs just an exterior accoutrement…’tis the heart that matters…

oh, and your authority is not judged by your pigtails, Marina…

at least, not your pigtails alone

where does the word “Emo” come from and what does it mean, lots of people have a differant view on it and I would like to know about.

    Thankyou

    • buzzword says: 33.1

dude, i swear its based on punks insulting the posers by calling em’ emo after the fucking aggravating comedian emo phillips. i’m telling you we were doing this way back in the day in chicago in the very early 90’s. nobody believes me. i mean if your going to insult somebody why shout out an abbreviated form of, “emotional” doesn’t make any sense. but back then emo phillips was popular and annoying so yeah, calling someone, “emo” was insulting. that’s my story.

      • Now a days Buzz, as you know people are referring to emo as that, an emotional person. But what you said makes sense. I was drawn up in some fire helmet in the 90’s so I do remember the emo thing back then. We were called idiots or emo’s before 911. While people were running out of burning buildings we were running in as fast as we could. Adrenalin is a wonderful thing, it makes you bullet proof or stupid

    • foxbow15 says: 33.2

Emo’s -.- stupid emotional freaks that cut themselves -.-

  79. Capman911 says: 31

Well I am late for class again. But cutting grass takes time. Looks like all of the hair styles have already been spoken for. I am missing something here. Your wearing what we call pony tails which is hair pulled back or to the side and fastened with a scrunchy to look like a pony or horses tail, but you are calling them pigtails :???: I thought a pig tail was the same as braids like the Chinese wore. :???:

  80. BoArgMir says: 30

    Hello!

Marina….I’m curious about the phrase “Déjà vu”. I would love to see you do a video on the origin.

BTW, I didn’t have a Déjà vu moment, but a client of mine did. And I thought……….oooohh……..good one for HOTFORWORDS!!

    Have a great day

  81. ziggledorf says: 29

dear hotforwords, will you look up the origin of the words curtain or drape. what you hang in front of your window.

    thank you

  82. Dear teacher,
Very very very interesting lesson, inded ! When I was young I had long hairs that I wore in a poney tail. In France we sometimes speak about choucroûte (it is a meal) for a hair cut.
Oh ! Very beautyfull picture, is it a recent one?
    Amicalement,
    Don Felipe Gonzales

  83. ziggledorf says: 27

dear hotforwords, i found a longer word than Antidisestablishmentarianism, it is pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis
it would be very helpful if you would make a video to my word.

    thank you

    • Well, she alluded to that word in her “floccinaucinihilipillification” video. It has to do with a lung disease caused by breathing in silicous volcanic dust. The word was made up for the sake being a long word and isn’t really used by the medical world.

  84. homework: Buzz cut, mullet, crew cut, beehive, bed head, greasy, dreads, flat top, feathered, mohawk, bald.

Dear Marina, to show us who’s the boss, that opening image where you wear that tiny white top and a batch of bangles: well, it proves you’re the boss because you have three hands! :-) Who could top that? :-)
    For your homework:
Bird’s nest = a person with messy hair.
Cow lick = patch of hair at rear center that grows straight out (I still have one.)
Crew cut = hair cut short on top so it stands on end and shaped into a flat top.
Jarhead = short crewcut with shaved sides used by Marines.
Military cut = short hair cut, part on left side, only.
Oh, did you mean girl’s hair?
Pony tail = single bunch of hair banded at rear center
Twin Pony tail = two pony tails, one left and one right.
Pigtails = Usually twins and not single, three groups of hair are braided together.
Bee hive = hair is stacked and shaped over the top of her head and the hair is held in place by spray lacquer.
Page boy = Straight hair to below the ear, trimmed straight, with a slight curl and with bangs across the front. Katie Holmes had this.
Updo = hair is collected and shaped behind or above the head.
There’s nothing wrong with long, layered, wavy hair. Jessica Simpson and Heidi Klum often do this. Your dear student, seesixcm6

    Can I request a word? -
Since you make so many video’s, along with other people, I was wondering where the word “armpit” came from.

    • James says: 17.1

What has videos got to do with armpit? I have never hear anyone request armpit. Sounds daft.. How could marina possibly do a thumbnail? I don’t think she ever did armpit modelling

    • way to copy mine except use a retarded word like armpit. the origin is obvious. the pit in your arm. geez.

      • !Oh Contrare, mon frere! It’s not as easy to figure as you say.

Is it REALLY a “pit” in your arm? There’s no hole there. There’s no jagged, rocky edges around the armpit onto which a person can fall and impale themselves. Yes, it stinks like rotten onions stored in a bog when a person doesn’t shower. However, the armpit is merely a conjuncture between the arm and torso, lined with fur to reduce chafing. Nothing about that indicates “pit” to me

  95. The “CHONMAGE” is worn by the japanese and reminds me of the Samurai. Its kinda like a bun on the very top of the head, not to the back of the head like women wear it.

Hey Marina, do something right out of the world with your hair for the next lesson!!

For 17 years ( since I retired from the Navy ) I have worn my hair in a PONY-TAIL for income tax purposes ( for 20 years I claimed a weekly haircut as a business expense – obviously I did not WANT to have my hair cut ).

While I was growing up my parents wouldn’t let me grow my hair long, nor would the Navy. So now my pony-tail is a symbol of FREEDOM.

    • That’s interesting. I too wore a ponytail. I didn’t start wearing one until years later when I left the Navy. I grew the thing down to the bottom of my shoulder blades. Then one day I got tired of eating my hair in bed. I had this sexy stylist whack the thing off. I think she had it donated to women with cancer. Now days I can’t stand to have my hair get very long. :???:

      • I keep it in the pony-tail rubberbands unless I’m actually washing it.

If I did cut it off I don’t think there would be that big a call for gray hair. If I do cut it off I’ll check.

      • I hate using rubber bands. I liked using a scrunchy but had a hard time finding some really small ones that didn’t look feminine.

      • tryant says: 8.1.3

When I was 18 I had looong blonde hair to the middle of My back, the chicks dug it! Nowadays I’m 1/2 bald so I keep it short. I miss My hair very much  .

I believe they can dye it after they cut it off. I think the hair will take the color after it is cut off if you wanted to donate it. Or you could dye it on your head then cut it off. Just running off here. Pay no attention to the man with only a little hair left on his head.
