In South Africa, the word is pronounced with a hard g, and the vowels are shorter. It sounds like gear-off. The accent is on the second syllable, too.

  2. deusex says: 156

Marina, you missed a point here. The word “giraffe” is not coming from the arab language. “girafe” is the form used in french, but the arabic word is “zarafa”.

I’ve heard of a few inventors and creators who can’t sleep for more than a few hours at a time. That’s as close as you can get I think Marina. Though it seems like you and HFP barely get any sleep anyways.

I just heard a joke which I have to share:-
    Q. What do you get if you cross a camel with a leopard?
    A. A fire-side rug that you can have a good hump on.

  6. papawolf says: 152

I am totally in love, you are an angel.

  7. Marina, the name kangaroo has an interesting origin too.
Fish, whales, sharks, etc., don’t require much, if any, sleep.
    Do ants sleep? Who cares?!

  8. Dez says: 150

Apparently there is a Camelopardalis constellation (first recorded in 1624 by Dutch astronomer Jakob Bartsch). The head of the constellation is near Polaris, and unfortunately the constellation is rather faint. But a point-to-point drawing of the major stars within it does make a crude stick figure of a giraffe.

Homework: I’d say it would have to be an animal being chased by hordes of hungry predators, like a turkey on the eve of Thanksgiving.

  14. animalntaz says: 144

What “animal” gets the least amount of sleep?

…Well, I do suffer from insomnia from time to time.

  15. mittheman says: 143

I would like to know why the English language is full of so many heteronym’s.

    Such as…

    Live
    Abuse
    Duplicate
    Dove
    Elaborate
    Perfect
    Record
    Sewer

    And so on.

    • Dez says: 143.1

I’d guess it has a lot to do with being a conglomerate as well as an inclusive and growing language.

      • If you have to record a song before you can put it on a record and you have to duplicate an item to make a duplicate; then why doesn’t something become elaborate when you elaborate on it. Also, why do you suffer from drug abuse if you abuse drugs?

      • Dez says: 143.1.2

I forget how young this crowd is  … Fact is… you don’t have to record a song before you put it on a record. You can record, live, directly to the record… which is how the process was done for generations before magnetic tape was developed. Perhaps you’re wondering what magnetic tape is… don’t worry, it was the technology that preceded compact discs. True, you must duplicate to make a duplicate. It is even possible to elaborate on a topic, making that topic seem elaborate… and if you have abused something you leave evidence of abuse. In the examples you provide you are comparing verb usage of a word to noun (or adjective) usage… with a slight change in pronunciation to identify one from the other. This is not a big mystery. The humorous sewer/sewer difference should illustrate the need for differing pronunciation most admirably.

  27. Some fish don’t sleep at all, and 1/2 of a dolphin’s brain goes to sleep, while the other half stays alert to sense predators.

  28. Im noticing something interesting about the ‘Favorite day of the week’ poll. Ok I know Friday and Saturday were going to be very popular, but I never would have guessed Monday would out rank Wednesday & Thursday. You hear many people talk about the Monday blues. I wonder why this is? :???:

  29. “If voting changed anything, they’d make it illegal.”

    - Emma Goldman -

    • buzzword says: 127.1

ha! thats funny! and so true in a very general kind of way ignoring the times in which voting did change things. u.s. citizens ought to vote more frequently, really.

    • Jack you know for the first time in my life since I have been voting I really don’t know yet who I want to vote for. That kinda scares me a little. I afraid of what the republicans put us through for the last 8 years so I am concerned about voting Republican. I don’t know about Democrat because of Obama and what I personally think of his back ground. If I don’t vote I can’t blame anybody but myself for not voting. This to me is a scary year for America.

    • On Thursday at the Democratic National Convention, Gov. Bill Richardson said more than a few words in Spanish. Then, almost immediately afterwards, he cried, “Let’s take back America!” I was kind of wondering who “us” referred to…

    • I’m also a bit perturbed that the campaign slogan for the Obama camp is “Yes we can!” which is a direct ripoff of “Si se puede,” the Hispanic battle cry that a Hispanic lady got all of the delegates to shout earlier at the convention this week. I have nothing against HIspanics. In fact, virtually all my students are Hispanic, and I love them dearly. But the campaign slogan, and the speaking of Spanish at the convention, is speaking to a divided America–one where Americans are no longer asked to speak English. It’s not inclusion; it’s pandering. At least my students will grow up speaking English. Being bilingual is a blessing. Refusing to learn English, and expecting politicians to pander, is simply not getting with the program.

    • I’m sticking my neck out on politics here. Nothing to do with giraffes, who, uh, stick their necks out… Disclaimer: My name is LividEmerald, and I do not necessarily support this message!

    • Is it possible to retract our political statements? No, no se puede.

  38. Привет мой дорогой преподаватель,

Your expert abilities with words reminded me of my believe, rightly or not, that Russians were very good at reading between the lines of the formerly state controlled newspaper, Pravda, thus creating very critical thinkers of the political environment. (Am I over-thinking this? )

With this in mind, I wondered if Russians follow the United States’ Presidential election and what their reactions are regarding the candidates.

    • mijj says: 118.1

If that’s true, then why hasn’t the average american (or brit) managed to develop the same ability with his own news media?

Western corporate media has been much better at blinkering opinion than the state run efforts of the ex-USSR. Why is that, i wonder?

    • mijj says: 118.2

(i was referring to: “Russians were very good at reading between the lines of the formerly state controlled newspaper, Pravda, thus creating very critical thinkers of the political environment.”)

    • Thanks for your reply, Mijj. Perhaps, we buy the “pig in a poke” because we assume we are getting the real deal and don’t look in the bag first. The packaging is so impressive.

      • mijj says: 118.3.1

I think, because the USSR state view was so easily disseminated (centralized state control of information), there was no effort to actually make it become the receiver’s viewpoint. The state merely expected it to become the receiver’s viewpoint because it said so.

Along with that, i presume there was felt little need to get feedback on the effectiveness of the propaganda.

In the west though (US particularly), there’s much more knowledge of the psychology of effective propaganda. e.g. splash headlines might make a suggestive point one way and it would be contradicted in the body of the analysis. The mass of people are susceptible to the headlines. Those who go into details of political analysis are in the minority. So, propaganda is deniable.

Of course, G.Bush’s government is more in the style of the Soviet Union, hence it only made half hearted attempts to create effective propaganda and relied more on assertion and intimidation.

The next US government will be more subtle.

      • More subtle? Do you mean like getting knifed in the back instead of the forehead? Either way, you’ve been had. The press should be the entity shouting, “Watch out!” Not, “Ooooh, did you see that? Shock and awe, impressive.” Boneheads!

      • mijj says: 118.3.3

i mean more subtle in the way the propaganda works.

i.e. .. instead of the blustering machismo of the bush years, there will be a hand-wringing concern that certain actions must be taken in the best interests of … etc. … rather than the Bush years hysterical “we have to attack or we’ll be exterminated” type stuff.

e.g. .. Bush is rightly accused of war crimes committed against Iraq. However, why is Clinton rarely mentioned? .. he’s responsible for the same order of magnitude of deaths in Iraq. By sanctions designed to maintain the crippled state of iraq he also ensured a huge death toll because of lack of essential supplies.
e.g. “UN figures show that up to 5,000 children a month die in Iraq because of the sanctions against Iraq”
        http://www.globalpolicy.org/security/sanction/iraq1/2000/clinton.htm

Marina, what’s the etymology of the word “eloquence”?
(as demo’ed in this vid [Miss Teen USA South Carolina 2007 with Subtitles])

    • ELOQUENCE is Latin ELOQENTIA “easiness of speech”.
The word can be cut E-LOQUENT-IA :
E = EX = OUT + LOQUENT = SPEAKING (past participle) + IA = NESS (suffix). If I dare say it would be OUTSPEAKINGNESS in English.

    seals sleep very little

    BiLL

    • okay4now says: 83.1

Never heard that one before.  I once had a young (not full-grown) seal spend the night in my bathroom, I was rescuing it from a storm.  It slept with me on the floor, even climbing-up on me & cuddling on top of me so I was stuck there the entire night. Sea World came the next morning to get it. The guy had a long pole with a noose around it, I told him “No way!” and I carried the seal to the cage on the truck like you would a small child or pet–GREAT animal, like a dog with flippers. But more to point you see seals sleeping all over the place. Unless you’re talking about Navy Seals…

  72. If you want to talk similartities to animals. The giraffe looks like it has the same physique as a Camel(Stature), Horse(Shape) and Leopard(The spots).
The Arabs took over North Africa, so they brought Arabic. It’s from a dialect of Arabic.
    Dialects work like this:
When I say Dog, I pronounce the o as aw in saw. In the midwest they would say Dawg aw prounounced like the “Aoooo” in a wolf howling. In Manhattan they would say DwOOg.
The simple way to explain dialects in Arabic is with the word Abdullah(Slave of God). In one region it’s pronounce Abdillah, in another it’s Abdallah.

  78. Chemikal says: 75

Mijj and iamme097 were discussing which came 1st… the chicken or the egg! Allow me to get into it, and at the end I will cleverly request 2 terms.

Do you guys even realize that in the egg is an actual chicken, instead of your morning omlet?! :) )

Also now, the problem is reduced to this… what came 1st? The chicken or the egg shell?

Well… since an egg shell is made of keratin, a substance only found in living organisms… the answer becomes obvious and the problem simplistic. [but if your a redneck, this will do too: `dem darn alienz planted the eggs in the ground, and they grew into Crispy Strips]

So why did that chicken cross the road then? Because it was dead serious on not winding-up on the day’s menu.

    • Capman911 says: 75.1

Actually the chicken or biddy is not in the egg if the hen hasn’t been fertilized by a rooster. The only thing in the egg is the yolk and the white surrounding membrane. So when animals developed first on this earth mammals and reptiles gave birth to their offspring by different means “ie” live birth or eggs.
But to us rednecks we believe that eggs come from mushrooms that was planted by Aliens. When a mushroom pushes through the ground the top of it is called the egg in which we collect and fry or scramble in the pan. So there. That explains the origin of what came first chicken or the egg. I got that from Goober.

I heard that dolphins don’t sleep at all until they are a few weeks old!

I was also wondering where the word “-Quack-” refering to an incompetent doctor comes from.

    Thanks from your favorite student!

    Hi Marina,

Great video about the Camel and the Leopard, i’ve got this burning question about a songtext called “Tainted Love” written by Edd Cobb
Gloria Jones sang it in 1964, I remember only the Soft Cell version being the first one, and as a child wondering what Tainted means. Sounds like Painted.. but why would anyone paint Love?

(btw your accent reminds me of a special Lady i’ve met years ago, she originally came from the north-western part of China, don’t ever try to hide it..;)

well koalas are definitely out of the picture. Do sharks and fish sleep a lot. Insmoniacs don’t sleep at all. How about insomnia?

A word I am requesting is engineering or engineer. I’m currently studying mechanical engineering and was just curious. Thanks.

    • mijj says: 64.1

i checked the french for “engineer” -> “ingénieur “.

my wild random guess (because that’s what i like) is:
I bet it has something to do with ‘one who is employed to be “ingenius”‘.

I can’t think of any animal that requires so little sleep.

However, I do have a word request after watching the Democratic National Convention – Pander!

    • 2utoday says: 63.1

 How about a waste of broadcasting time? I’d rather watch a movie this week!

      • I am probably just a masochist, but I have been watching all of the convention this week and will do so next week as well. I was hoping that the Democrats was expand upon their platform with some specifics, not just their normal platitudes and pandering.

I have class tomorrow night, so I am recording it to be able to watch the entire thing.

I am a Republican and will probably enjoy their convention next week a great deal more.

Still all style and no specifics on Barack Obama.

      • 2utoday says: 63.1.2

 I am a democrat but don’t always vote democrat. I have a tendency to analyze each candidate and decide on their qualifications who gets my vote. So far,I don’t see any qualifications for Obama-zip,zero,nada. I call em as I see em!! Now,I’m going to watch another movie.

    Hi M,

Not sure the animal who get the least amount of sleep, but lions get a lot like 22 hrs a day. If I had to guess I would say flamingo; stand up sleeping is hard enough, but on long leg come on… Got to be short sleep time there.

Check this out, talk about dog days
I usually make it to the end of the meal before I fall asleep, not always though.
I’m ok, as long as nobody scares me.

      • Hey Billy, how you doin? I’m doing good. I got my raise at work today and my cubbies are 33 above 500. Bring on the Phillies! I think I’ve been doing 2 much homework lately so I’m due for a break, at least for a while. That was a lovely outfit Marina had on! I hope you and everybody else have a nice labor day weekend! Cheers!

Hey labatt78… I’m good , but tired as well.
You got a raise…cool, do you get more work to do because you get more money?
You’re going to school too? summer time?huh You still surprise me…
I agree on Marina’s outfit, ideal for a hot day. She looked cool while the dog struggled to stay cool on the tile by the door.

I had a job interview like that once :) .. without the offer of dirty sex, though. :(

and .. finally, a resume that everyone can believe!

The duffy one was the better of the two, i think .. the other one was too mournful.

I don’t think I have ever seen a fish sleep – even though there is the
famous saying: ” Sleeping with the fishes. ”
You can tell by there eyes, just like sharks ….
    Black eyes! Like a doll’s eyes ….
When he comes at ya, doesn’t seem to be living ….
…. until he bites ya. Then those ….
(? too much ? lol!) I don’t even know if any marine animals sleep.
It’s pretty darn creepy. Cap’n Jack — what do you know of it ?

  96. Marina is in first position with 755 votes, but the second position could launch an attack tonight. Two and a half hours left of voting for Wed.

    • 2utoday says: 52.1

 I think that Kobe parties all night and has lots of dog friends over while Marina sleeps. Marina, you better wake up one or twice a night and break up the wild parties Kobe is having behind your back!
