  1. I like Aristocracy (The Best Option)
But I guess on a serious note my candidate is RON PAUL whether they consider him Republican, Libertarian or Constitutionalist could he be any worse than the political candidate forerunners of each of the major parties including the the man who’s in office now?

“In my many years, I have come to the conclusion that one useless man is a shame, two is a law firm, and three or more is a congress.”
    ~John Adams~

  2. LOL! JACKSON PROBABLY CHANGED THE REPUBLICAN PARTY TO DEMOCRATIC PARTY DUE TO THE IDEOLOGIES OF THE REPUBLIC SUPPRESSING PEOPLE. BUT, IT’S FUNNY NOW HOW THE DEMOCRATS USE THE MEAN OF SUPPRESSION TOWARDS THEIR OPPONENTS IN THE REPUBLIC INSTEAD OF SUPPRESSING LIBERTIES OF ETHNIC BACKGROUNDS (GERRYMANDERING). I FIND THAT VERY AMUSING…. SALUTE TO PUTIN AND CHAVEZ!

While we are on a subject of politics, lets do Politician and Statesman. This comment will get us started. Please solve the mystery that this comment presents if you think it would make a worthy word request, HotForWords, or if it interests you, fellow Students.

Politician shares the meanings of Statesman which refer to one engaged in Statecraft, the art of leading or directing the affairs of government or diplomacy. Within this sense, they are synonyms.

"I’m proud that I’m a politician. A politician is a man who understands government, and it takes a politician to run a government. A statesman is a politician who’s been dead 10
    or 15 years." - Harry S. Truman
"Now I know what a statesman is; he’s a dead politician. We need more statesmen." – Bob Edwards
"That politician who curries favor with the citizens and indulges them and fawns upon them and has a presentiment of their wishes, and is skillful in gratifying them, he is esteemed a great statesman." – Plato

However Politician got a derogatory connotation.

The world is weary of statesmen whom democracy has degraded into politicians. – Benjamin Disraeli
Ninety percent of the politicians give the other ten percent a bad reputation. – Henry Kissinger (1923 – )

In most English dictionaries Politician has an additional definition, as one who seeks to gain for personal or partisan purposes or to win with unprincipled or disapproved means.

"A statesman is a politician who places himself at the service of the nation. A politician is a statesman who places the nation at his
    service."  – Georges Pomidou

"In order to become the master, the politician poses as the servant." – Charles De Gaulle (1890 – 1970)
"A politician will stand for what he thinks people will fall for." - Anon

“A politician is an animal who can sit on a fence and yet keep both ears to the ground.” -American Proverb

Where, when and why Politician got the negative meaning for English is a mystery with the thin resources used by this commenter, mostly the ONLINE ETYMOLOGY DICTIONARY (http://www.etymonline.com/). Apparently when Politician became used in English (1588) from along the way the Latin Politicus, “science of government”, and back to Greek Politikos with Aristotle’s book ta politika, “affairs of the state”, figuring in and eventually to the Greek word Polis, “city”, which was the place of political organization for them.

Politico, a politician, had a negative side and came to English via French, Spanish and/or Italian from the same Latin and Greek sources. Perhaps Politician acquired its bad reputation from Politico.

Whatever, Politicians were viewed poorly from the beginning of democracy apparently.

"I was really too honest a man to be a politician and live." – Socrates

"You have all the characteristics of a popular politician: a horrible voice, bad breeding, and a vulgar manner." – Aristophanes (450 BC – 388 BC)

"Under every stone lurks a politician." – Aristophanes

Perhaps Politics had no negative meaning but to be political did.

"Politicks is the science of good sense, applied to public affairs,
and, as those are forever changing, what is wisdom to-day would be folly and perhaps, ruin to-morrow. Politicks is not a science so properly as a business. It cannot have fixed principles, from which a wise man would never swerve, unless the inconstancy of men’s view of interest and the capriciousness of the tempers could be fixed." – Fisher Ames (1758–1808)

However Statesman (1592) escaped the legacy of Politics by being made like Steersman in reference to the “ship of state”.

I just e-mailed the Republican party about the stars on their Elephant. I got a reply from an automated system saying they would get back with me. So maybe we will find out the reason why the stars are upside down.

    • Good! I would be interested in what they say if anything. What email did you use? I would also email them so they don’t ignore the question.

      • Hey Jack, This is the email address I used.

        chairman@gop.com

      • Thanks Captain. Email sent. Lets see what happens. I loaded my email for bear.

      • You and I will be on the Secrete Services list to be checked out

      • Jack this is a odd question but have you ever sent anything to the Teacher? At the address in her contacts page. And if so did she acknowledge it with so much as a form email. I have noticed She never mentions getting anything in the mail from Her fans. That is odd does anyone ever send Her anything at all?
I did link Her site to mine the other day, very cool ( in News page ) My Wife would have left me if I had put it anywhere else

      • Capman, I already have been checked out by the Secret Service many years ago from my hacking days. The file on me would fill a ream of paper.

      • RRR, The form email solution was brought on because of spammers. Mine is working fine. You also have to remember she gets thousands of emails. If she replied to every email she would never get any lessons done. Its a big time killer. I know the forms are working because Im getting emails just fine.

      • Isn’t that you and Capman are for?
Read and send out answers to fans? .
        But my question was:
Have you ever sent anything to the Teacher? At the address in her contacts page. And if so did she acknowledge it with so much as a form email. I have noticed She never mentions getting anything in the mail from Her fans. That is odd, Does anyone ever send Her anything at all?
Maybe that is something you two could do. Answer fan mail.

      • Lets see if I can answer your question again.

The position of TA was just a fun title at first for HFW. I had asked to change that to a working position, leaving Teachers Pet as the fun title. As for TAs answering email, It maybe in the future but not at this time. We do not have access to her email. Many of her emails are private/sensitive information. Also remember like I said before she doesn’t have time to reply to 100,000,000 viewers. That takes staff that larger company could handle.

Let me propose this snail mail question to you John. Have you every received a reply from a famous Hollywood star? Im sure she gets her fan mail. Also remember to send a thank you card back cost money. Most letters do not have and email address to reply back to.

Thats the best I can answer your question at this time.

The stars are not upside down. There are tilled to the RIGHT.////\_!!

      • I looked around like I said it just TILTED to the RIGHT.

but another Blogger said this…I did a little research and found the use of the five pointed star upside down has satanic uses. I have searched and searched but I can’t find out who designed the Republican logo. I have a feeling some neo-pagan, democratic designed this logo and is laughing every time he sees this logo on a Republican advertisement.

    Dear Marina,

Up here in Canada, we are about to have another election.

The Central Igloo that the politicians do their business in has melted and people are upset(global warming). Our King, Harpernostril 1, has rented snowmobiles for all of our top politicians so they can ride farther North to re-set up a new Parliament. It was on the news!

We have don’t have the fancy name origins like the ones you mentioned. The party names we have are “talk to the hand” party, “dial zero for operator” party, and “we got eggrolls in our ears” party.

None of them ever listen to us. They just nod, chuck snowballs at eachother and collect nice paychecks.

When the greatest Samurai in Japan was dying he instructed his servant to tell the next three great Samurai to come see him and he would pass his authority on to whichever of them was the best. However, unbeknown to his servant, the Samurai placed a pillow over the door to his room. He then laid down and waited. When the first Samurai entered the room he sensed the pillow falling on him and cut it in half. Later the second Samurai entered the room and sensing the pillow falling, cut it in four pieces. When the third Samurai approached the master’s room, he sensed a trap and did not enter…..

    I am a card-carrying yellow-dog bleeding-heart liberal democrat.

I liked your discussion of the origins of the democratic and republican parties.

Perhaps you can later talk the “Whig” party sometime and the origin of that word? Honest Abe was first a Whig. There were also the Federalists once upon a time.

As I understand it, the Republican party sprang not only from anti slavery sentiments but also from the movement to consilidate the nation and de-emphasize the power of individual state goverments.

I have heard it said that before the civil war, people would say “The United States ARE…” Now people say “The United States IS…”

i was wondering, what was the original meaning of the word Christ? was it always a name, or does it hold any specific meaning beyond Jesus Christ.

    • mijj says: 82.1

if you dont mind me butting in, (from memory, ready to be shot down) Christ isnt a name, it’s an appellation. I think it’s a greek appellation: “christos” meaning something or other .. probably something like “giver of light” or “teacher” … or something.

    • mijj says: 82.2

oh .. and, of course, not being a roman, “Jesus” wasn’t his name .. that’s the romanised version .. i think it was “Joshua” .. or “Jeheshua” or something.

      • Dez says: 82.2.1

“Christ” comes from the Greek “Christos” meaning “anointed one”. Mijj is right. It is a title, not a name. He would be more accurately described as Jesus, the Christ… not Jesus Christ. In Hebrew the word is “Mashiach”, also meaning “anointed one” and is the word from which we get “Messiah.”

As I understand it, there was no letter “J” (or a “J” or “Y” sound) used in Latin or Greek at that time. His name in Latin and Greek was Iesu or Iesus (with a letter “i”, just as Julius Caesar was written as “Iulius”. His name in Greek began with the letter Iota). This created a rough approximation for the “Y” sound of the Hebrew letter Yod. (Iesu pronounced “ee-eh-soo”)

The original Hebrew name of Jesus is “Yeshua” which is a derivation of “Yehoshua” (Joshua) which means “salvation”. His name with title in Hebrew is Yeshua Ha’Mashiach (literally meaning “salvation, the anointed one”).

    • mijj says: 82.3

oh yeh .. i just remembered .. i think the greek “christos” thing is related to the Hindu “Krishna” somehow. .. i guess the greek thing is derived from “Krishna”. … (I’m not sure Krishna is a Hindu thing, i’m gussing)

quik question to mac users….Is it normal that when you move your mouse at a certain low speed it will go even slower ,it’s like the tracking speed falls down:S kinda hard to explain , but it’s very anoying I like my mouse to be super fast and not this slugish.I’v set it to the fastest tracking speed and it’s still not fast enough… …tell me if you don’t understand what I just said…. :???:

    • Marina says: 81.1

You must have some kind of third party mouse tracking software that has that thing where it goes slower when you go really slow, etc… my mac just has a tracking speed and I am set at 50% which is really fast.

Or you have a mouse that needs to be replaced.. because that does not sound right.

      • Dear Teacher,

I enjoy your videos and your humor. My son took some cell-phone video of my eldest son’s graduation, this weekend. I would like to put together a video with comical out-takes similar to yours. Would you guide me to where I can become educated in this process? Thank you.

        Your Dear Student

      • it works fine on windows…I tried different mise , one gaming mouse that has a function to change the sensitivity did the same… :???: I have the tracking speed on 100% on windows to ,that´s also to slow :P
I really need to figure it out cause it’s freaking anoying:P

I had to replace both of my mice on different computers because of erratic problems. I went with two Logitech cordless and just love them. They do a lot more than a regular wired mouse and no cords. But that’s my preference FB

    • Capman911 says: 81.4

Oh, ok, then you must be having problems as M said with two drivers interfering with each other. Try doing a system restore back to an earlier date when the mouse worked better.

    • BillyB says: 81.5

LOL… My wife just got a new iMac, put it where the old PC was, so I sat down , got comfy, & tried to find the start button, had to get up again, it’s on the back, sat down again, got comfy, it started talking to me, in a man’s voice. I got up again, to get my gu… weapon of choice, as no other man is going to have my wife touching his mouse. Anyways started to get comfy again & it tried to take my picture with the gu… weapon, before it locked on me I escaped out of the chair & haven’t been back. I don’t think it likes me, so I went to the laptop, with a two button, scroll enabled, mouse & waitforit wireless & fell asleep I got so comfy. My only mac experience so far…why is there only one button on the mouse & no schroll? (Maybe your mouse wants too much control or has too many…)

      • Billy she has found your password or user name and the site you hang out on and now she is going to snoop on you. So a newbie may show up on here and it may be her. :!: So we may have to water down how we show our affection for Miss M. sometimes.

      • The one button mouse has few controls on it. People have many times told Apple not to add many buttons on the mouse because they get confused. I on the other hand love my Logitech laser mouse. I think its the MX 900. It has two wheels and 5 buttons. The main scrolling wheel has like a shifter in it. I can shift from clickity to free wheeling just by clicking the wheel or switching applications. Oh and the laser is invisible no more red light. I love this mouse. Apple can keep their cutesy mouse. ;)

So Billy. How is it like having a new man in the house? Are you getting jealous yet? I heard that it does quite well in satisfying women. Don’t you worry. He’s bi. You can change his voice from Bruce to Victoria and she will rock your night away. Try creating your own log in and you can make changes without messing up her computer. Macs handle multi family members well.
        Have fun!!

    • It’s because the current OS port your using is hacked with old code that was used back in the 68000 series chip sets. It sound like someone did a work around (hack) to make the mouse work on BIOS chip sets that are not authorized by Apple. I would have to look at the source code of your OS to be positive.

Back in the day. Mac users could download a 3rd party driver that would do a progressive acceleration to their mouse. I no longer use such a driver but wish I did. Im very good at using such a progressive accelerator. I presently use the standard mac accelerator that I have set at 100% because I can’t make it go any higher. I could almost move my pointer purely by thought.

      • I Just got back from a friend and he has an imac ,didn’t realy notice that the tracking speed fell down to like 5% when i move my mouse slowly, I set his tracking speed to 100% but it went as fast as mine….that’s to slow for me -.-
So I think it’s some weird driver isue

I don’t know much abouth this whole mac thing lol  I got the hacked and stripped down kalyway mac 10.5.2,I edited some kext files to get the full resolution,Cause the only thing I could choose was 1024×768 . Took me 2 days to get that right -.-I can’t realy remember if I had any trouble with the mouse before that, I reinstalled mac like 20 times in the last 2 days cause I always screwd something up:P

I have an intel core 2 duo and i’m getting a total score of 198,something in xbench, do you have any idea if that’s good? is it using both cores? I don’t have a videocard installed just the onboard intel 950 gma, and 2gigs of 667 mhz ddr2

Oh and do you know if it’s worth to upgrade to 10.5.4?

      • You said your friend has an imac. You didn’t state OS or version of Imac. It’s like stating I own a car but it could be a ferrari or pinto. They are two entirely different cars. On my mac my I’m using a Logitech 900mx laser wireless mouse. No accelerator other than the stock mac settings. I have a first edition mac mini using OS 10.3.9. It does have some progressive speed but hardly noticeable. I can move my mouse 1inch to the right and movie the pointer across the entire screen. Screen res 1440X900.

Kalyway has numerous bugs in it. My friends hate it with a passion like you would not believe. Its was like taking a Ford Pinto and turning into an airplane. Yea you can do it but why would you?

xbench seems a bit high. Sounds like false data. Should be around 130 or so. But there are many many factors relating those numbers. You said yours is stripped down so that might be accurate speeds.

Yes its always good to upgrade your OS because Apple is really good about plugging up security leaks. Many hackers outside of the company are responsible for notifying Apple about the leaks. Apple even gives credit to those who find the leaks.

As you know Apple’s current OS is rooted in Unix. Unix is a very powerful OS. Thats what really makes it so great on a programmer aspect. I even run native Unix applications on my mac with no conversions.

My recommendation is play around with the Kalyway for a bit but don’t get to involved with it nor let its bugs influence you. Its a copy of a copy of another copy that is very unreadable. To give a mac a true test is to buy a mac with a kick ass video card in it. If your on a tight budget then you can get a mac mini for about $600 to $700 clams. It lets you keep your Monitor, keyboard and mouse. Just remember the mini mac is a low end machine. My friend had a quad Intel mac tower that just blows the doors off his mini.

        Hope that helps. :???:

      • my friend has the leopard os,he bought the thing this year, I just wanted to check if he had the same thing with the mouse.
Do you have The sensitivity of your mouse set to very low or something?
I tried to install the 10.5.4 update but it always freezes at 40% and then reboots and keeps giving me the message to reboot, mac says it’s somekind of kernel panic..
I’m not going to buy a mac :???: hehe, way to expensive lol, I build this pc for under 400 euro’s and it’s getting a pretty good score in xbench…I have a quad core 6600 laying arround to and an ATI 4870 but i Can’t find the drivers for mac so i’m just using the onboard card(need to buy a new motherboard for that 6600).

      • you say a mac mini costs 600-700 dollars ….well here in the netherlands they cost 700 euro’s that’s like 1050 dollars… :???: the pc i have now has a 24 inch monitor, 1 tb hardrive a good motherboard an ati 4870 ,2 gigs of drr2, a core 2 duo at 3.05 ghz(overclocked), and a coolermaster soprano case and all of this has cost me me a litle more than one mac mini…. :???: Mac is just a rip off, also the iphone, that creepy guy steve jobs said 180 dollars in his iphone speech , f*ck him, the cheapest you can get it here is 850 euro’s that’s 1250 dollars for a phone

      • Just one little slider in the preferences pane that adjust the sensitivity.
Your going to get a lot of kernel panics because you don’t have the right hardware. Remember the version you have it a hacked job. Buggy as all hell. Apple purposely did that so no one could make clones.
The prices I quoted was yes, US$ for a new machine. You can buy a used machine for half that. If you can’t afford it then stick with what you got. It will be fine for your needs. The mac is not for conscious budget consumer.
Oh now your calling it a rip off just because you don’t have one. Sorry you feel that way.
He said the iPhone is $199 US. I don’t know where you got your information that it was $180. Trade agreements our countries is why it cost more. There is ways around this. Staunch Republican.

I thought that a republican form of government was one in which the citizens voted on representatives to govern in their interest. In contract, a democracy occurs when all citizens vote directly on new laws, treaties, etc.

I’m a South Park Republican. “I hate conservatives; but I really fucking hate liberals.”

  45. Well I pretty much vote for the more appealing candidte. So I might be a democrat and then next time a republican. Right now I wont disclose my affiliation.

  46. lostinhere says: 69

I am a GDI, Godda*n Independent. But, I can be considered a conservative, in the original meaning of the word, not the current politicized meaning.

  47. I’m totally Democrat. I would urge everyone, though to think about the messages we see—especially as we look at “scientific evidence” and statistics!!!

As an example, let’s look at the passage of the Civil Rights. If you just look at the numbers, you will see that there were actually a HIGHER PERCENTAGE of Republicans in both houses of Congress who voted FOR the Civil Rights Act (CRA)–Republicans COULD be quick to point that out.

However, you would need to look at the actual numbers to see the whole story. There were MORE DEMOCRATS who voted for the CRA at the time. How can that happen?? Well, more Democrats were in control at that time. Then, when you break it up by north/south instead of Dem/Rep, you would see that there were few republicans in the south in the early 1960s AND that southern congressmen (BOTH democrat & republican) voted against the civil rights act. On the other hand, northern congressmen voted FOR the CRA, regardless of their party affiliation. Since many of those in power in the south were democrats in the 60s, and since it was only southerners who rebelled en masse against the CRA, the majority of those available to rebel were Democrats, ALTHOUGH it was the Democrats (JFK) who was the mastermind of the Civil Rights Amendment and MORE Democrats voted FOR the CRA than against it. All I’m saying is that we need NOT beware, but rather be AWARE of stats. Higher numbers OR % doesn’t show us everything

    • Dez says: 67.1

Nice point, Duke. We tend to make a lot of snap judgments and assumptions without looking before we leap. My own state was a single party state at the time… Democrat. I have not looked at the voting record of my state concerning the CRA, largely out of fear of the shame I am likely to find. But then, my state has been divided against itself since its inception.

      • Yeah, we are wired to make decisions WITH our emotions in mind. Just because we point to “hard evidence” with numbers,
        (1) there is a bigger story than the sole apparance of a number
        (2) the way those numbers make us feel ALSO plays into decision making.

As for your state and it’s history:
Whether we talk about people or states, they CAN be defined by their history, but they CAN be defined by their current actions and efforts for the future  Looking & working forward with the past in mind brings us change

Said another way in The Art of War, those who do not know themselves and do not know their enemy are doomed to failure. Those who know themselves, but not their enemy, have a fighting chance. Those who know themselves AND their enemy can carry the day. The point: when entities know themselves (i.e., mistakes, weaknesses, AND strengths), they are more in control of what’s to come, and may even prevent conflict

Well for my home work I am registered Independent. If I had to be a democrat or a republican, I was democrat but they got way, way to liberal so I would be a republican, if I had to be one or the other.

  49. Hello all:
When Democratus formulated the idea of a governement by the people he said to put all the power in the ‘hands’ of the people.
Along came a philosopher named Plato who said that the people are in general unruly and uneducated and trusting them to make decisions would lead to chaos. What he formulated was a beauracracy filled with representatives who would work on behalf of the people. I don’t know whether they would be chosen by the people, perhaps someone can enlighten me about that. This was all formulated in a book called “Plato’s Republic.”
America upon founding took the best of what both systems offered i.e., rule by the people, but acknowledgement that the masses are uneducated so they must be represented by those who are. The American system is a Democratic Republic, hence, The Democratic Republic of America. It is not a pure democracy!
    Thank you.

    • Dez says: 65.1

Lycurgus, the great lawgiver of Sparta, was once proffered a proposal to establish democracy there. He replied by saying, “Begin with your own family.”

Pure Democracy did not exist even in Athens. Though there were no representatives, not every person in Attica could vote.

      • Warren says: 65.1.1

        Hmm..does this sound familiar?

Since this is to be asserted in general of men, that they are ungrateful, fickle, false, cowards, covetous, and as long as you succeed they are yours entirely: they will offer you their blood, property, life, and children . . . when the need is far distant; but when it approaches they turn against you.

        and again

….since the desires of men are insatiable, nature prompting them to desire all things and fortune permitting them to enjoy but few, there results a constant discontent in their minds, and a loathing of what they possess.

        Niccolo Machiavelli

      • Warren says: 65.1.2

        Hello Dez,
That wasn’t directed at you- it’s of course, a generalization.

      • Dez says: 65.1.3

        Warren,
I’m not offended at all  I rather agree with you (and Machiavelli) concerning this generalization on human nature. Human nature corrupts easily and often quickly. I was pointing out that even among those egalitarian Athenians who founded democracy (rule of the people) not all (not even a majority) of the people were afforded a voice. It speaks to hypocrisy. Also, even the brutal and pragmatic Spartans saw the flaws in pure democracy. Lycurgus’ response reminds me of Aesop’s fable of belling the cat.

  50. CaptainJack says: 63

Somethings wrong with the Republican logo. The stars are upside down. Five-sided stars that point upwards like those on the Democratic donkey and the American flag traditionally symbolize the forces of good. An overturned pentagram, however, represents the goat’s head of Satan and the forces of evil and there are three on the Republican’s elephant. The GOP’s stars weren’t always upside down; some say the change occurred around 2000. I have a feeling some neo-pagan democratic designed this logo.
Does anyone here know why this change was made?

    • It happened in 2000, aye? That was the year GWBush was ALMOST elected president, then went on to be appointed to office. Perhaps the downturned stars coincided with the time in our history when the Republicans went from being Jedi to becoming agents of the “Dark Side.” That’s the best explanation I can think of

    • Dez says: 63.2

Maybe the elephant was traveling downhill to crush its foe, or lowering its head to charge. That would make the stars align correctly.

If a pagan designed the GOP stars, then such a pentagram wouldn’t be a sign of evil (to pagans, or Masons)… but would be a bit creepy to everyone else. Check out the orientation of the Medal of Honor, if you get the chance. It too is “point down” for all services.

    • mijj says: 63.4

in Gnosticism, Adam is represented by the down pointing pentagram, Eve is represented by the upward pointing pentagram.

The downward pentagram represents the “lower” aspects of human psyche (emotion, intelligence), the upward pointing pentagram represents the “Spiritual Higher Consciousness)

The two in combination represent the whole human character.
      ([symboically represented here])

Maybe the switch to the downward pointing pentagram represents a switch from higher spiritual principles to emotional principles.

    Word request:

Hi Marina, thanks for what you do. Since you did the dems and reps I was woundering if you have the time to research what the founding fathers defined as a democracy form of government opposed to a constitutional repeblic?
If I’m not mistaken, the founders of U.S. grossly forbid the use of a democracy form af government.
I think everyone should know the answer and why they forbid it.

Thanks again and keep up your custom way of spreading intelligence, Ron.

    • muggins says: 61.1

“forbid” is not the correct word. Had Hamilton acquired more power, then “forbid” may well have proved accurate. What the Founding Fathers set up was a Republic with a narrow and limited form of democracy. Gradually, over the decades, the democracy has grown to include the votes of all “races” and women, as well as Senators being elected by popular voting instead of by state legislatures. The electoral college still exists, thereby ‘regionalizing’ the voting outcome, giving a slight disadvantage to the cities voters. The idea being that the entire country would not be dominated by the cities. Thus it has happened, on rare occasion, that presidents can get elected with marginally less votes than the other candidate. If the people decided to discard the electoral college, it would require an amendment to the Constitution.

      • Dez says: 61.1.1

Well done, Muggins! *salutes* The founders feared both tyranny of the few as well as rule by the mob and agonized over making a fair middle path. This is why we have an electoral college (to protect against the mob) and a bicameral legislature (to protect against a tyrant)… with elements of both Spartan and Athenian models of representation, allowing for the flexibility to change as well as the stability to change slowly (by the will of the people and not the will of popular movements and fads).

      • WOW!!! The level of intelligence compared to what I’m use to (youtube) is MAGNIFICENT, thanks mugsy.

However, I was refering to the ability to vote someone’s freedom, liberty, prosperity, and/or property away. For example: we take peoples hard earned prosperity from them and distribute it to the poor as a form of welfare (one ex. should be efficient). This is a form of democracy that I believe our founders would be opposed to, not to say charity is bad, but to force someone to become charitable is. Legally, by the contitution, this should not be. It would be awsome if Merina would compare the difference between the founders quotes and what is actually happening in the U.S. today.

I think the founders believed in individualism (constitutional republic) and opposed collectivism (democratic form of gov).

        Thanks again Muggins.

      • Also, democracy is just the tyranny of the majority. A republic, on the other hand, is a political system in which people have rights that can’t be violated — not even if the majority votes that way.

Did you know even though Lincoln was a Republican, his views are considered Democratic by todays standards

    • rhiannon says: 42.1

      what is today standards?

    • orion_ss1 says: 42.2

When Lincoln ran for re-election the Republicans had a different candidate; Lincoln had to form a new party ( National Union ) in order to run to keep his office.

      • muggins says: 42.2.1

The Republican Party splintered. One splinter group formed the Radical Democracy Party that included radical Republicans, who considered Lincoln incompetent. The remainder of the Republican Party, still in support of Lincoln, renamed the Republican Party, the National Union Party, with the intent to include Democrats who were against the Copperheads.

      • Lincoln, from Illinois, was a northern Republican. The anti-slavery movement was concentrated in the north, and the south was surely NOT AT ALL happy with the northern policies in the antebellum period after the Civil War. Yet, if you look at the political party blue/red map, you will see that those northern states that brought about the change and equality are now DEMOCRAT and the southern former slave states are now centers of REPUBLICAN power.

Republicans, which largely control local and state governmental power in the south now, were in the cradle of Jim Crow laws. These laws excluded African American people from benefits such as sitting on public transportation or even sharing a school room with people who were white. Hence, there was a “flip” in there, where Republican power went South and Democratic power shifted North.

  81. orion_ss1 says: 28

I saw Glenn Beck’s interview with Governor Palin a few months ago. There was a photo of a somewhat bewildered moose ( or whatever ) with the oil rig in the background amid LOTS of snow on an otherwise barren plain. They then showed the area under discussion which apparently is miles from anywhere, and its relation to the larger area, and then the state of Alaska.

I was leaning towards Ron Paul ( as a write in ) or Libertarian but I think McCain/Palin ticket is one I can vote for.

You can ramble on about being green to your heart’s content, but the country DOES run on oil. Dipping into strategic reserves invites our enemies ( yes, we DO have enemies ) to risk an attack on perceived weakness. Drilling in Alaska invites OPEC to loosen their grip on the world.

A comparison has been made with Obama’s stated plans and what Hoover tried ( with disastrous results ).

I will NOT be voting for Obama; I MIGHT be voting for McCain.

    • Yeah, but the Hoover Dam endures. Even survived the transformers.

      • Even a clock that has stopped is right twice a day.

Hoover was and Engineer; and should have remained one ( as he himself often said ). His attempts to end the Depression were not successful during his term, and Prohibition didn’t end until the next presidency.

The Stock Market Crash occurred on his watch.

After leaving office he met with the Fuhrer ( Adolf Hitler ) after WWII broke out but before the US joined in and advocated against helping Europe.

Just as Hollywoood actors should stay out of Politics ( it took Jane Fonda long enough to learn to shut up ), Hoover’s beliefs, while well intentioned, hurt the country, and if there is anything to be learned from all this, we must remember the mistakes of the past because we don’t have time to make them all ourselves.

      • Actually, the dam was originally called Boulder Dam. I’ve always preferred the original name. But a dam by any other name would still be as watertight as a baby’s diaper.

Comes from the name Jacob (Hebrew: Yakov) which means supplanter or usurper. The roots of the Hebrew name come from the word “akabh” (he beguiled) but is also similar to “akebh” (heel). Supplant comes from the Latin “sub” (under) + “planta” (the foot or the sole of the foot, meaning “to trip up, overthrow, replace.”

I’ve been wondering about the origin of the word “cahoots”. Seems like a funny word.

  86. Dez says: 23

I appreciate the history lesson as well as the etymology… but like a true teacher’s pet I must ask, “What, no homework?”

    • Dez says: 23.1

      Rats! Caught me not listening…

Homework: If both are the same, there’s no need to choose.

      • Dez says: 23.1.1

Most of the differences between these two parties have nothing to do with governance, but with social issues. Washington warned us sternly against political parties and I’m understanding more about why… parties are not accountable to anyone. An elected official can be held accountable, but a party serves itself, not a constituency. It is loyal to none but its own ends for consolidating power. I am by no means a noble person, but I try to look beyond the party and vote my conscience. Some days I am a democrat, some days a libertarian, some days green, and some days republican or constitution party. Look at what is being proposed. What is its motivation/purpose? Even if it causes inconvenience to yourself, is the bill (referendum, etc.) fair? Does it seek to do the best for the people at large (or the specific constituents involved)? Is it necessary? (No need to reinvent the wheel) Is it feasible? How does it sit with your conscience?

Took a test… came up Libertarian… should have figured it

  87. animalntaz says: 22

I can’t make sense of either parties, when they are all practically the same. I tend to flush out all this political hype by listening to Green Day’s “American Idiot.”

  88. Homework: Republican.
What about you, Marina? Democrat or Republican?

or so i will try from time to time speak and train my russian!
my question is why some words in russian are simmilar to those from english? like tank or corridor
i as a polish can tell that our (russian and polish) are on the same level yet you seem to have far greater history in similarities with english than we do

    • nw2394 says: 20.1

Well, “tank” is a relatively modern word, and, like many modern words, they are common to a lot of languages thanks to modern communication connecting us all up.

Wouldn’t be sure about “corridor” without looking it up, but a lot of words have their origin in Latin, Greek, or even Sanskrit. Russian and English are part of the big Indo-Eurpopean group of languages (that have drawn quite a lot of their words and grammar from those languages), so some some similarities are not unsurprising.

If I remember correctly, tanks are called tanks because, when they were originally invented by the Brits in WW1 (or the Great War if you call it that), the project was top secret and the “shore story” was that they were making large water tanks. Weird to call them tanks I suppose, but surely it is better than, perhaps, “self propelled armoured artillery pieces” (or some such mouthful!)

    Free Kittens

Lil Suzy had a box of very small kittens that she was to give away, so she had them out on the street corner with a sign “FREEKITTENS” next to them.
Suddenly a big line of big black cars drove up with a policeman on a motorcycle in front. The cars all stopped and a tall man stepped out from the biggest car. “Hi, little girl, what do you have there in the box?”, he asked.
“Kittens,” Lil Suzy says. “They’re so small, their eyes are not even open yet.”
“What kind of kittens are they?” he asked. “They are Democrats,” says Lil Suzy. The tall man smiled broadly, returned to his car and they drove away.
Sensing a great photo opportunity, the tall man, Senator Barak Obama called his campaign manager and told him about the little girl and the kittens. It was planned that they would return the next day, have all the media there and tell everyone about these great kittens.
The next day, Lil Suzy is standing out on the corner with her box of kittens with the “FREE KITTENS” sign and the big motorcade of black cars pulled up again. This time with all the vans and trucks from ABC, NBC, CBS, and CNN. Everyone had their cameras ready and then, Senator Obama got out of his limo and walked up to Lil Suzy.
“Now don’t be frightened,” he said, “I just want you to tell all these nice news people just what kind of kittens you’re giving away today.”
“Yes, sir,” Suzy said, “they are all REPUBLICAN kittens.”
Taken by surprise before so much of the media, Senator Obama said, “But honey, yesterday when I stopped, you told me that they were DEMOCRATS.”
Lil Suzy says, “Yes sir, I know I said that. But today, they have their eyes open.”

Could work both ways, depending on how you swing.
BTW I’m slacking off at work for a couple of minutes.

High Warren, yah I grew up in the George Carlin, Cheech & Chong heyday. I have to disagree with George though as to complaining. You need to vote to have the right to complain. Complain like hell if they don’t live up to their promices, because… “dammit, I voted for you, you , you b@%+@^d.”
In Canada we have your basic three party system, with a few entertainment parties thrown in, like the marijuana party that recently joined up with the green party to double their constituancy. maybe 1/2 percent now, of the voters not the population. (Voting is too late in the afternoon to get a good turnout though.)
Anyways we have the right wing (Alliance) that used to be divided into the ultra right (reform) & the left turning right (PC) they used to divide the vote & although were the majority, always lost because the vote was split… always made a great opposition party, but they are in power now.
The (Liberals) so named were the right wing division of the left wing people, almost always winning because the other parties kept dividing the vote, but mainly because people remembered Pierre Trudeau one of the more entertaining leaders (with big brass balls). This generation has forgoten him & no liberal leader has had the salt to fill his shoes, they all seem to care about how everyone feels about them now.
Now the left wing, NDP (new democratic party) is the least democratic of all, some would say, Comunnist party , dressed in PC clothing.
There you have it in a nutshell (whatever that means). Bored yet?
Man the Canadian news guys go on for 4-5 years between elections discussing this stuff, when what really matters is which Canadian team is going to bring the Stanley Cup home next year… it’s ours after all… dagnabit.

      • Dez says: 16.1.2

Not that I think my fellow countrymen are not intelligent enough to handle more than two parties… I’m afraid of what a coalition government would look like in the USA. Look how nastily we fight when we have only 2 parties of consequence… Tweedle Dumb and Tweedle Dumber

        I liked the joke too.

utopia and eduction do not mix becuase it spoils real fast! a pretty song http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=-P_TIMBP_oE

      • I lied I’m not PFP but I hate this homework assignment & believe no politics should be on HFW, but what do I know? I know this: many things can be above politics, it’s an grand opportunity that in being toyed with is being wasted here–a damn shame. If Marina is staying out of politics then she shouldn’t ask us to disclose, it turns it in to a silly game for someone’s amusement. A BETTER HOMEWORK assignment: “What other political parties have there been (or are there still) in the U.S?” The list would be long and interesting and educatonal. I have many friends in both political camps and some true real friend who despise my politics–so what, they’re still friends. I submit: a real friend would drive his friend to the communist rally even though he himself is not communist, pack him a lunch, lend him your rain coat…Anyways, you’re completely wrong. The only way to Utopia is massive education (or growth), picture mankind 1 million years from now and, if we ever make it that long, that’s how much growth (education) we’d need. You’re right “pretty” song.
