Karaoke

Karaoke… what’s the origin?  Plus.. time for me to switch careers maybe? :-)

I think with MAJOR Auto-Tune I can become a major singer as well!! :-)

Listen to the audio bit here which talks about Auto-Tune that is used SO MUCH today.. giving that electronic sound first heard in the Cher “Believe” song. Listen here at The New Yorker.

I like that made up look of yours with the shawl over your head. That looks romantic too. I grad school from 1985-1986 I would have a few beers in my apartment and scream along with my cheap stereo to casettes by U2, Genesis, Phil Collins, etc. I had the thing up so loud that I could not hear how bad It sounded. Scream to hit those high notes!!!

  2. is anybody know the 8 tracks casett tape since 1971. That,s the Karaoke borned by
japanese, Kara is ((kara)te) & Oke is ((Orche)stra). ;-)

Inspired by Marina, I dug up some old bit of experimenting i did using FruityLoops …
(results are a bit on the gimmicky side – experimenting with ideas and techniques, but a proper attempt at experimenting)

    all approx 1 min long:
http://www.mijj.info/tune/IcySnowyPlace.mp3 – trying to get the hang of drums
    http://www.mijj.info/tune/jungleStroll.mp3
    http://www.mijj.info/tune/visit.mp3

titles are reminders to me rather than proper titles

i don’t know if they’ll play in the browser if you just click on it. It works ok in mine .. but .. {shrug}.

    • Marina says: 110.1

I like them! God job! It’s fun, right?

      • mijj says: 110.1.1

 wow – glad you like them .. i thought they’d be missed because of the new vid.

I did those as a doodle around using the music package FruityLoops.
(very easy to get started, but can get very sophisticated and time consuming.)

I always had the intention of doing proper songs, but i can’t get past doing little clips.

yeh – it’s all good fun. Especially if you like messing with sound effects (like i do). – the end part of your song reminded me that i had these hidden away somewhere.

        :)

Privet Marina!!! Snachalo pasibo tebe za “Hot For Words”. So, here’s my question/ word request. i was wondering what is the origin of the word LIVE and it’s two connotations: the first on as a verb – to live and the second one as and adjective – live, like to play live music. it’s a little strange because they are spelled the same but pronounced differently. That’s pretty much it. Thanks again. Keep on doing a great job. Greetings from the Republic of Moldova. Rock on! Andrei [The TooL]

I also got two word requests:

Where did the word “lingo” come from? Lingo is practically another way of saying slang.

and the other request is where did name of genre “metal” come from?

  40. James says: 88

I know I asked this before but I have forgotten and need reminding ( I searched everywhere for the comment)

  41. Thanks Marina for this video (perhaps your best one so far). I really appreciate your choreography :) Don’t be afraid by some comments about your voice, it’s not Mariah Carey’s voice but it’s really not “unlistenable”…

Well, the purpose of my comment went to me when I saw your video “Penny and dime” (did you know that the French word disme [also written dixme] has lost his mute “s” like in English and became dîme during the 18th century?). I wonder where the name “pound sterling” comes from. What I found is quite interesting because of a controversy about the origin of “sterling”. I found 4 possible origins:
    1) steorra star (coming from a Norman word and the fact that the first coins had a star on them)
    2) Easterlings (”men from the East”) because of the good reputation of merchants from Hanse
    3) esterlin (name of a French currency) but I don’t know if the name sterling comes from esterlin or if the origin of esterlin is sterling.
    4) sterlingus (a Latin word which may seem strength or stability)

I think it could be a good subject of investigation…

And congratulations for your videos, they are both interesting and funny.

PS: If you make a video from this, please pronounce the first letter of my nickname “k” (like in Elvish languages).

I am having second thoughts about the partnership programme now http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Ix4UeQwgtv8

    • Marina says: 84.1

James…. I started to watch the video but stopped, as I have seen so many similar videos.

There is a website where you can upload your videos and be seen by millions.

There is a website where you don’t have to pay dime one, yet they will host your videos and show them to the whole world for you.

There is a website where an obscure person can plug away for a year, uploading videos, responding to comments, video responses, etc… and after a short while, the website says, oh.. and by the way, I’ll give you a (majority) piece of advertising revenue that I make from your videos.

There is a website, that as a result of using and sticking with it, you can end up getting BOOK DEALS, TV DEALS, MOVIE DEALS.. etc.. as a direct result of your success on this website.

There is a website that CONSUMES 5% of all INTERNET TRAFFIC IN THE WORLD… yet doesn’t charge the users who are the ones causing that massive consumption of these Internet resources.

The website that I am talking about is of course YouTube.

And if you don’t want to achieve success on the Internet using video and if you think being paid money for doing something you love is bad.. then PLEASE don’t use it. But if you’d like to succeed at any of those things.. YouTube is the QUICKEST way to achieve that, PERIOD.

Don’t listen to idiots who get all grumpy when others make money and they don’t . Those are the same people that complained that the Rolling Stones sold out.. or the Beatles.. or film producers… or tv producers… or actors.. etc.. anyone who goes off and achieves success.. these people complain that they didn’t just sit there and be poor like them.. and not GIVE IN TO THE MAN…

Give me a break. These people need to grow up.

      • James says: 84.1.2

Ok I am back on the partner side again.. But I still think its unfair how they have a “show partner vids only link” that does push out people that work hard, I have used it before (to filter out junk) but not for much else.. It will be a while anyway as I think you have to give tax details, and because I am the age I am I don’t have to pay tax for anything so…

      • James & Marina,

It’s interesting how SOME people also complain that someone is “too studious” or works “too hard” because it makes them “look bad” in college classes. Seriously!?! It’s hard to believe other students have said that me and my friends make them “look bad” by actually doing our work, but I’ve heard it and seen how they treated us like the nerds

ON THE OTHER HAND, there have also been people who are NOT that petty, who ARE fun and encouraging, etc. Those are the people I hang out with and seek time with

As for “how much is too much”, as long as a person’s needs for sleep, activity, being with other people, etc. are being met adequately, it’s fine to be diligent. Well, there have been a couple years when I was working way-way more than spending enough time with friends or sleeping. However, I can also say that I was able to do more in those years than I would have been able to do otherwise and I live a more balanced life these days

      • Marina, thank you for this great explanation on how YouTube works. Most of us are experts in something worth watching. We just need to have your great looks and the presentation skills to make it look so good! I may have to buy myself an iMac computer, work on my guitar tunes, and find some compelling subject matter which no one else has tried, yet. There’s a possibility of success and the price of failure is less than if you started your own business. Maybe in 2009. Your dear student, seesixcm6

    • Marina says: 84.2

James, trust me when I tell you that nobody clicks on the Partner-Videos-only link.

The beauty of YouTube is the rawness of the videos that are uploaded. Why would someone choose to watch only slickly produced content? They can watch TV for that!

As for what a partner is… ANYBODY can become a partner now.. there are now tens of thousands of partners I think now. It simply means that they applied and filled out information on how to get paid the advertising money. It USED to be an exclusive club.. but they have now opened it up to everybody.

As for you… get your parents to sign up for you and get the checks sent to them.

      • James says: 84.2.1

I actually have applied twice and got the same reply “not enough views. try again later” so when I start to kick off a bit more I will try again, I am quite pleased with myself so far every day for the last 2 weeks my channel has had at least one honour for the most viewed comedian in the united kingdom, that, to me is a sure sign things are starting to look up for me now. My damn video converter keeps losing sync so I have just uploaded the wmv file. Its still uploading. I will post the link here. I hope u will like it. Its like some of your fan videos. If you don’t like it I will take it down straight away.

      • James says: 84.2.2

Also I have heard of some people being asked by youtube to become partners. Was that the same case for you? And I am worried too because one of my videos (my most viewed ) has got music by amy winehouse in it.. Suppose when I apply next time I will have to ask them what to do next..

      • Cheers, Marina. It’s been a pleasure watching you these many months :!:

    • James,

Speaking of which, the definition of the Japanese word ‘kara’ meaning ‘open’ made a lot of sense to me. I think that because, the word ‘karate’ means ‘open hand’. I like the way how some parts of words have the same meaning even if they are used to form other words.

Some songs I would love to be able to sing on karaoke are : Bon Jovi – Living on a Prayer, Duran Duran – Hungry Like The Wolf, and Bryan Adams – Summer of 69.

I was looking at a few videos where people have filmed with the iSight camera and have no audio.. Is this the people that filmed the videos own fault

    • Marina says: 67.2

The majority of my videos were filmed with my iSight.. when I am close to the camera, it’s my iSight camera

      • James says: 67.2.1

Seeing the quality of those videos made me think about a mac, before I would have never wanted one. My brother thinks its wrong that I might be/am going to buy a mac because I like the camera. But its not just that. Also being a windows guy it would be nice to try something new. I will always keep my laptop I have now though, I like it too much to get rid of it.

      • Isight is that some kind of improvement on the SAS’s famous Mark 1 human eyeball laugh out loud. I hate the fact i put the snow thing on and it causing me grief every single sentence.

    • Marina says: 67.3

James.. it’s not the camera on the mac that makes one buy a mac… it’s the fact that it comes with all this multimedia software already installed. I record my movies with iMovie (comes with the mac)… my theme song and the ukulele songs were written in Garageband (comes with the mac).. I even have a program that runs windows XP in a window on my mac if I ever need anything that only runs on a PC… but what I don’t get with the mac is the following:

I had a PC laptop that started running really slowly.. to the point where I couldn’t do anything on it. I paid a guy a couple hundred to fix it and he said it was so overloaded with spyware that he had to format the hard-drive and start all over again… so I elected to do that and lost some files (pics, docs) in the process. Then after about a month a friend was on my computer and all of a sudden there were pop-ups again.. and I was SOOOO pissed! I called my tech friend and he looked at it and said that I was overrun with spyware again that he would have to run these programs that take hours to run and it would cost me a couple hundred again… and at that point I got a mac and have NEVER had an issue with spyware/viruses ever again.

So.. from a creative point, you can’t beat a mac.. but from a productive point as well, you can’t beat a mac… as you don’t have to keep disinfecting the machine every few months or so.

Just my personal opinion and I understand why some people stick with PCs.. but I can run PC on my mac as well, so there is no reason for me to have a PC.

      • James says: 67.3.1

You are totally right there Marina. I do like the programmes you get with mac but when I looked in the shop they did seem a bit awkward (maybe because media player is so simple, but probably because I am not used to it.) Really I suppose it is only windows that gets viruses Mac/Linux don’t get them. What is a shame for me though is how other companies can’t put mac on their own computers. Dell for example puts windows on computers but Microsoft don’t make their own Microsoft brand, whereas it is the other way around with Apple.

When I got that virus I thought I might have to re-install but I was determined not to, in the end I downloaded and ran all the anti-viruses I could find at the same time and managed to remove it bit by bit. Only last week my brother caught it and my mum caught a different one! So from that point ANYTHING is better. I think I find Windows a bit easier to use than mac but so long as I can keep my laptop that I have at the moment I WILL be getting a mac sometime!!

God bless you hotforwords everything

      • Spyware can be a real hassle. I am not sure of your internet
provider/server and they’re features they have available but,
check to see if you can get a free download from yours of
SPY-BOT Anti-spyware by Computer Associates. It’s pretty simple
and gets things that my Norton 360 doesn’t know about.

It’s incredible how quickly the “junk” can get back into a system.
I wish I had the cash for a Mac.

(Now imagining you do some air-guitar!)

Okay, this is likely a more simple request (meaning: worth a video?):
The word coffee. Did people used to make and drink such bad
“coffee” that it might have once been “cough-ee”? Just curious….

      • Ooops! “Their” — not ‘They’re”.
You’ll see it. I did but, all too late.

      • ok…uh that tech friend of you must really suck….
and viruses and spyware….? never had any problems with those on my computer…..

Dear Marina, you’re truly amazing… bravo baby!

My question relates to the many words in Australia (where I live) that have been abbreviated using “ie” such as “barbie” for BBQ, “mozzie” for mosquito, “stubbie” for short bottles of beer and MANY others.

Tell me, what would be the linguistic origins or INFLUENCES – either endemic to this country or imported from others that now cause people to shorten words to this kind of ‘cutesy’ word-useage?

I know you’re a very smart girl, but perhaps I’ve stumped you with this one?

    With affection,

    Zenobius

What the hell is wrong with youtube. Apparently my most recent video is the one I made 2 days ago, and the one I just put up isn’t! so I had to paste the link into the featured video bit.. MY GOD! and sometimes when I upload a video it changes my picture to the thumbnail of that video..! I didn’t tell it to do that.. so why the f*ck is it doing it!!!

With a little vocal and dance training I think you’d fit right in and actually bump the other out.
You got that much talent.!! :!:

I’m wondering if I can shake this tune out of my head before tomorrow’s exam. :-)

  75. James says: 50

I find a lot of japanese words follow a similar pattern take anime for example all the vowels are split by consonants

With exceptions like karaoke the last 3 letters still end in consonant vowel consonant

    toyota
    japanese
    etc etc

  76. mijj says: 49

I like the style of this vid : plain background -> very much like a comic book panel.

Homework: “Some Kind of Wonderful” by the Hollies (I think)

Marina, I have a Russian friend and I tease her a lot. When I do something distasteful, she says “Foo!” (at least that’s what it sounds like). I understand that this means something like “disgusting” or perhaps in a less extreme way it means “yuck!”

    Marina’s Dancing: A
    Marina’s Attire: A+ (mee-ow)
Marina’s Singing: Foo! but you get an “A” for effort

This was a cool lesson

Hey Marina! Could you please do a video on the phrase “as all get out”? As in “He was crazy as all get out,” et cetera. :) I loved your “balls to the wall” episode, but I’d love to hear about this particular phrase too! Thank you!!

  93. Let’s just say it was a rush!

  94. Wow!, I loved your singing. The last time you treated us to your singing was in the Birds and the Bees video.

Homework: I love the older romantic ballads; great poetic lyrics and music. My all time favorite is Righteous Brothers – Unchained Melody

There are so many. Another great song is Stand By Me

  95. David says: 29

    Hi Marina,

I always laugh when some person is “pissed to the gills” and trying to sing the karaoke to The Rodeo Song. Kinda goes like…

    “It’s 40 below and I don’t give a fawk, I’m off to the rodeo!”

It’s an obscene red-neck song… most people wouldn’t speak the words if they were sober.

My favorite is Merle Haggard… “We don’t smoke marijuana in Muskogee.”

  96. Dearest Teacher,
I went to dictionary.com and did a search for the word “set”. It had 119 definitions!
Why so many definitions for such a small word?

  97. antoni05 says: 26

  98. sniperskaya says: 25

Marina, I like when you sing solo – so low we can’t hear you. And with your voice you should sing tenor – ten or twelve kilometers away. Actually your video was much better the second time I watched it because I turned the sound off. I really liked your outfit – nice belt! You as dancer – Да.
    As singer? Нет
    Не передайте зависящую работу.

Dear Marina, on August 23rd, you passed 100 Million views, and a week later, it’s 105,059,463. So, you might exceed 200 Million before Christmas! I seem to be helping by looking at your past videos posted before I joined.
I really enjoyed hearing and watching you sing and dance with Russian songs.
For your homework, I’ve never sung Karaoke. But when I learned to play guitar as a child, I liked to sing cowboy songs, like: Home on the Range, California, Here I Come, Battle Hymn of the Republic, The Man who shot Liberty Valence, and the Yellow Rose of Texas. I’ll think of you next time I sing “Yellow Rose.” Did they have cowboy movies or cowboy songs in Russia? It’s probably too American. Your dear student, seesixcm6

Hi :] I would like to request the word Kidding, as in “i’m just kidding” I think it’s a wierd word haha.

  116. k2mfw says: 6

    How about the word…. SCRAM

      • k2mfw says: 6.1.1

No, as in SCRAM, get out of here…the “Three Stooges” say it often to each other. It means to get out of here, leave my space, do something else, go away etc. Since the Three Stooges flicks were before the nuclear age, I doubt it meant to shut down a nuclear power plant as in the person who is the failsafe backup, the Secondary Control Rod Axe Man, who shuts it down. A scramjet is nothing more than a “supersonic combustion ramjet”.

  117. smokey36bear says: 5

I do have to have some alcohol in me before I can get up and sing  (if you call what I do singing) for people. I was once asked to stop, I couldn’t tell if it was the singing or that it was the same song over and over…..and over again.

  118. 2utoday says: 4

 OK,a singer you’re not. But who cares. You look real cute in your attempt and you found the origin and meaning of “karaoke”. Here is just one word of friendly advice: “don’t quit your day job!” Your “Hot For Words” videos are the greatest!!!!
