Calendar

Hey my dear students… I need your help for my calendar that will be coming out soon.  I decided to add important dates that have an etymological significance… like Guy Fawkes Day, Bissextile Day.. maybe even dates like General Fighting Joe Hooker was born on this day… stuff like that.

If you can think of any dates that should be included, please write them in the comments below… and I’ll be sure to add them!

Thanks so much!  You’ll all get A pluses for helping out your teacher!  :-)

  2. Dear Marina,

I would like to buy Your Calendar, but I found out that for me the shipment is more expansive than the calendar. So I beg Your pardon. i suggest you offer it in pdf.

  9. Hi Marina,

i think that it would be nice to include the 23rd of april, the International Day of the Book.

The 23rd of april is St. George’s day (Sant Jordi in Catalonia) has been celebrated in Catalonia by the people giving each other books and roses. It’s a beautiful tradition. That day you see books and roses all over the towns. Recently it has been extended to the world as “International Day of the Book or World Book Days”

    FROM THE WIKIPEDIA:

    Origin

The connection between 23 April and books was first made in 1923 by booksellers in Catalonia, Spain as a way to honour the author Miguel de Cervantes who died on that day. This became a part of the celebrations of the Saint George’s Day (also 23 April) in the region, where it has been traditional since the medieval era for men to give roses to their lovers and since 1925 for the woman to give a book in exchange. Half the yearly sales of books in Catalonia are at this time with over 400,000 sold and exchanged for over 4 million roses.

In 1995, UNESCO decided that the World Book and Copyright Day would be celebrated on this date because of the Catalonian festival and because the date is also the anniversary of the birth and death of William Shakespeare, the death of Inca Garcilaso de la Vega and Josep Pla, the birth of Maurice Druon, Vladimir Nabokov, Manuel Mejía Vallejo and Halldór Laxness (Icelandic Nobel Prize Winner of Literature).

Although 23 April is often stated as the anniversary of the deaths of both Shakespeare and Cervantes, this is not strictly correct. Cervantes died on 23 April according the Gregorian calendar; however, at this time England still used the Julian calendar. Whilst Shakespeare died on 23 April by the Julian calendar in use in his own country at the time, actually he died ten days after Cervantes, because of the discrepancy between the two date systems. The apparent correspondence of the two dates was a fortunate coincidence for UNESCO.

I hope this doesn’t arrive to late.

  27. Hi Teacher

I have a suggestion for you…how about a date for Douglas Adams, i shall explain he wrote a science fiction comedy trilogy in five parts called the hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy. The date i am suggesting is the 11 of March this marks his birthday as sadly he died before the Movie was made, so i think it may be fitting to add it to the calendar. I am enjoying the lessons i have watched so far, and i shall continue to do so.

  43. Since Shakespeare created many of the words and phrases we use today he should be on the calendar. We don’t know exactly when he was born but he died on 23 April 1616 (Julian Calendar) or 3 May (Gregorian calendar). Since the Gregorian calendar is the one we use today, I would suggest using 3 May.

Hi Marina, the most beautiful teacher in the world! How about Frank Zappa day on December 21. He was born on December 21, 1940. I believe he coined the words “mammalian protruberances” which means breasts (or boobs, tits, teats, jugs, Bigguns, gazoongas, melons…hehe). I hope this has some kind of etymological significance. By the way, do you have a boyfriend? If not, might you be anywhere near California? Just thought I’d ask. Have a great day and I look forward to many more lessons.

  54. leloi87 says: 158

    Hi Marina,
Do you think that it is good enough to put on your calendar the date of October 8 to mark the day I discovered you on youtube and spent the entire following 24h to see all your videos?
I wish you will think so.

    Cheers!!!!!

  55. St. Nicolas day is one that isn’t in all the calendars, but I don’t think it has a lot to do with words. Although you could do a tie-in with Santa Clause which he is generally thought to have something to do with. Santa Clause is commonly refered to as St. Nick, but that might be another pagan tradition the catholic church tried to co-opt. You might want to include the fact that Christmas is celebrated on a different day in Russia. I believe it is January 6 over there. I guess it’s an orthodox thing. I know you already did a video on the word Halloween, which is my favorite holiday. Thank you for that.

  57. Dear HotForWords,

Is there a National and or International Word Day?

If not it should be your birthday

I cannot think of any days. That may have something to do with me being slightly nocturnal. However, that brings me to this:

An old friend of mine (and I mean old in the sense that it is no more) and I (actually the idea came to, from and by me) (anyways):

I came up with National and or International (God Willing) Star Day. That is: Nation Star Day. This day is about the night thereof in fact, and what it is about is this:

Everybody and their mothers turn off all of their lights and including the city, There of which by means of cooperation through the agreed upon date of the whole operation, (you’ve got the picture) we all see the Stars.

I wish upon a star that you promote the date of “National and or International Star Day”.

It should be a date when the Night is long as well as on average clear and cloudless.

    How about October 11th?

    Your Favorite Student,
    TOF

  75. Well, I say the birthdate of the United States Constitution has to be on the calendar for it is one of the most important historical documents ever created and has many important words for all of us. SEE BELOW……………………………

    U.S. Constitution’s Birthday
On September 17, 1787, the 55 delegates to the Constitutional Convention held their final meeting. Only one item of business occupied the agenda that day, to sign the Constitution of the United States of America.

  76. It would be interesting to have all the various holidays on the calendar. But it will be hard since the the Jewish day is from nightfall to nightfall, so it would be over two days for our days.

  77. kaibanator says: 132

If I read this rightly, part of the origin of ‘calendar’ was from the word ‘Kalends’ which is supposed to be the ‘beginning of the month’ for the Roman Calendar’.

Apparently (If I read this right), the Roman Calendar started off with 10 months a year. 6 months with 30 days and 4 months with 31 days, and the year started from March. And as time went on the missing 61/62 days were eventually added.

Confederate Memorial Day Monday, 27 April
Jefferson Davis Birthday, Monday 1 June

Thanks Marina, looking forward to your calander!

  133. How about the hog-wild Groundhog Day (Punxsutawney Phil) on February 2nd.?

    What Does “Punxsutawney” Mean?

The name of the town was derived from the Native American word for sand flies, a gnat-like insect that was abundant in the area. The name “town of the ponkies” became Punxsutawney.

      Here is one possibility…

He may have been referring to “God’s” (possessive) calendar, not “gods” (plural) calendar. The Hebrew month of Nisan is the first month of the Hebrew religious calendar. This month often occurs during March. The reference for this month is in Torah, in Vayikra (The Book of Numbers) chapter 23. Some folks who claim to study the Torah chase rabbit trails into Kaballah (Hebrew mysticism), gematria (a form of numerology), astrology, gnosticism, and other weird stuff.

Marina, Please include the Moon Phases each month… and BTW, How did “Mooning” get it’s Meaning? Maybe you could include tiny Mooning Icons for *Full Mooning* (by the light of the silvery moon) and the *New Mooning* (for those starry starry nights)

Also, include The summer and winter Solstice
and the spring and Fall equinox….
A couple of more good words too!

How about your birth day Marina :?:

  182. Other ideas: You may not want to do these as they put more strain on your time and they may be more costly, but I thought I would mention these out loud as they may trigger other ideas.

    - Advent days (Dec 1-24) or 12 days of Christmas: Have a picture of you similar to the Fuel TV photos on each of those days; either the full square or 1/2 square. Opening calendar doors may be costly; maybe remove stickers to see the picture.

    - Easter: On the calendar is a link. People enter the link on your site and have to find the easter eggs, which reveal Marina bunnies.

how bout the date the first Oxford English Dictionary or Etemological Dictionary came into print.

Or the birthday of Guttenberg inventor of the Press.

Or the birthday of the enventor of paper that chinese dude.

Or the birthday of the man in the Insane Assylum in the book The Professor and The Madman who did much etemological research
while he was there institutionalised. His research was a bit interrupted on that day he tried to cut his penis off as it was to him the source of all his evil, but do please, leave that date off.

That is a real book that was a best-seller, The Professor and the Madman.

I hope this is of some interest to you Marina my dear teacher.

Do you adore clean, correct sentences? Do ungrammatical advertisements make you cringe? We understand completely, and this is why the Society for the Promotion of Good Grammar and MSN Encarta have designated March 4, 2008 as National Grammar Day.

You can put maybe like historical dates of you career. Such as getting on the Bill O’Reilly, reaching 100 Million views, getting Kobe, and moving from your aparment. Also you can add historical days in etymology like you said along with the normal holidays such as Christmas. You can add my birthday on April 18th too. (I’m kidding)

Hope I gave you some help.
Looking forward to copping me a calendar ASAP
