Calendar

Hey my dear students… I need your help for my calendar that will be coming out soon. I decided to add important dates that have an etymological significance… like Guy Fawkes Day, Bissextile Day.. maybe even dates like General Fighting Joe Hooker was born on this day… stuff like that.
If you can think of any dates that should be included, please write them in the comments below… and I’ll be sure to add them!
Thanks so much! You’ll all get A pluses for helping out your teacher!

Dear Marina,
I would like to buy Your Calendar, but I found out that for me the shipment is more expansive than the calendar. So I beg Your pardon. i suggest you offer it in pdf.

Hi Marina,
i think that it would be nice to include the 23rd of april, the International Day of the Book.
The 23rd of april is St. George’s day (Sant Jordi in Catalonia) has been celebrated in Catalonia by the people giving each other books and roses. It’s a beautiful tradition. That day you see books and roses all over the towns. Recently it has been extended to the world as “International Day of the Book or World Book Days”
FROM THE WIKIPEDIA:
Origin
The connection between 23 April and books was first made in 1923 by booksellers in Catalonia, Spain as a way to honour the author Miguel de Cervantes who died on that day. This became a part of the celebrations of the Saint George’s Day (also 23 April) in the region, where it has been traditional since the medieval era for men to give roses to their lovers and since 1925 for the woman to give a book in exchange. Half the yearly sales of books in Catalonia are at this time with over 400,000 sold and exchanged for over 4 million roses.
In 1995, UNESCO decided that the World Book and Copyright Day would be celebrated on this date because of the Catalonian festival and because the date is also the anniversary of the birth and death of William Shakespeare, the death of Inca Garcilaso de la Vega and Josep Pla, the birth of Maurice Druon, Vladimir Nabokov, Manuel Mejía Vallejo and Halldór Laxness (Icelandic Nobel Prize Winner of Literature).
Although 23 April is often stated as the anniversary of the deaths of both Shakespeare and Cervantes, this is not strictly correct. Cervantes died on 23 April according the Gregorian calendar; however, at this time England still used the Julian calendar. Whilst Shakespeare died on 23 April by the Julian calendar in use in his own country at the time, actually he died ten days after Cervantes, because of the discrepancy between the two date systems. The apparent correspondence of the two dates was a fortunate coincidence for UNESCO.

I hope this doesn’t arrive to late.
ummm… the calendars have already shipped.
hmm… what a pity.
I was going to suggest that she include a small icon of a rose and a book for that day. It would have been a good point to help me mange to introduce Marina to our best comic TV showman. I think it could be possible for a couple of other reasons. His show is broadcasted by “La Sexta” TV channel (which published an article about Hotforwords), for all Spain,
well, i received my calendar in the mail today – actually the carrier came to the door and left it – didn’t bother to ring…thank goodness it wasn’t raining…

Hi Teacher
I have a suggestion for you…how about a date for Douglas Adams, i shall explain he wrote a science fiction comedy trilogy in five parts called the hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy. The date i am suggesting is the 11 of March this marks his birthday as sadly he died before the Movie was made, so i think it may be fitting to add it to the calendar. I am enjoying the lessons i have watched so far, and i shall continue to do so.

Since Shakespeare created many of the words and phrases we use today he should be on the calendar. We don’t know exactly when he was born but he died on 23 April 1616 (Julian Calendar) or 3 May (Gregorian calendar). Since the Gregorian calendar is the one we use today, I would suggest using 3 May.

Hi Marina, the most beautiful teacher in the world! How about Frank Zappa day on December 21. He was born on December 21, 1940. I believe he coined the words “mammalian protruberances” which means breasts (or boobs, tits, teats, jugs, Bigguns, gazoongas, melons…hehe). I hope this has some kind of etymological significance.
By the way, do you have a boyfriend? If not, might you be anywhere near California? Just thought I’d ask. Have a great day and I look forward to many more lessons.
June 10th, AA birthdate…
The third Saturday in the month of May is Armed Forces Day. It celebrates every branch of the military service.
Hi Marina,
Do you think that it is good enough to put on your calendar the date of October 8 to mark the day I discovered you on youtube and spent the entire following 24h to see all your videos?
I wish you will think so.
Cheers!!!!!
St. Nicolas day is one that isn’t in all the calendars, but I don’t think it has a lot to do with words. Although you could do a tie-in with Santa Clause which he is generally thought to have something to do with. Santa Clause is commonly refered to as St. Nick, but that might be another pagan tradition the catholic church tried to co-opt. You might want to include the fact that Christmas is celebrated on a different day in Russia. I believe it is January 6 over there. I guess it’s an orthodox thing. I know you already did a video on the word Halloween, which is my favorite holiday. Thank you for that.
Dear Teacher, I don’t want to sound like a pervert. I know you are
over eighteen years old. I love your little catholic school dress outfit!
Really hot! I would like to see that on January as would 99.9 other
guys. They would never admit it! Love Jimj122345.
Dear HotForWords,
Is there a National and or International Word Day?
If not it should be your birthday
I cannot think of any days. That may have something to do with me being slightly nocturnal. However, that brings me to this:
An old friend of mine (and I mean old in the sense that it is no more) and I (actually the idea came to, from and by me) (anyways):
I came up with National and or International (God Willing) Star Day. That is: Nation Star Day. This day is about the night thereof in fact, and what it is about is this:
Everybody and their mothers turn off all of their lights and including the city, There of which by means of cooperation through the agreed upon date of the whole operation, (you’ve got the picture) we all see the Stars.
I wish upon a star that you promote the date of “National and or International Star Day”.
It should be a date when the Night is long as well as on average clear and cloudless.
How about October 11th?
Your Favorite Student,
TOF

Well, I say the birthdate of the United States Constitution has to be on the calendar for it is one of the most important historical documents ever created and has many important words for all of us. SEE BELOW……………………………
U.S. Constitution’s Birthday
On September 17, 1787, the 55 delegates to the Constitutional Convention held their final meeting. Only one item of business occupied the agenda that day, to sign the Constitution of the United States of America.
It would be interesting to have all the various holidays on the calendar. But it will be hard since the the Jewish day is from nightfall to nightfall, so it would be over two days for our days.
If I read this rightly, part of the origin of ‘calendar’ was from the word ‘Kalends’ which is supposed to be the ‘beginning of the month’ for the Roman Calendar’.
Apparently (If I read this right), the Roman Calendar started off with 10 months a year. 6 months with 30 days and 4 months with 31 days, and the year started from March. And as time went on the missing 61/62 days were eventually added.
http://www.webexhibits.org/calendars/calendar-roman.html
P.S I have probably missed some stuff, but I am too tired to bother checking
I hope the link helps
there are probably earlier calendars than this one (I’m just guessing though)
I don’t know. The one on the site you listed seemed like a mindless model advertising for somebody else.
Ignore that last bit. My browser is acting weird.
The way I heard it is that the Roman calendar did have 12 months.
However, a Julius Caesar wanted a month just for himself. He also wanted it to have nice weather. So, he took the spot after June and shoved all the other months down one and tossing the last one.
Augustus Caesar thought that was a great idea. He took the month after Julius’ and tossed out what used to be number 11. That’s why the months 9, 10, 11, and 12 have the prefixes meaning 7, 8, 9, and 10, respectively.
One of them also wanted to extend their month from 30 to 31 days so they took one from February.
OK, that was wrong. Ignore that one too.
Sorry
no worries

Marina,
Are you good or do you need more?
Hi wetsuit5, I think there have been too many entries of just events without thought to Marina’s request for etymological related events. I was guilty of that also.
cufan71’s submission below is a good example of what Marina is asking for. The 4-20 one is also very good as are others.
OK, I just redeemed myself by adding etymology references to my entry below and added new above.
I was hoping someone else would notice! My advice go back and watch some of Marina’s lessons (oh yeah!) then do some research to find a date that is related to the lesson. Now I’ve got to find out when spam was invented!

Also Marina, I’m crying corcodile tears because without rhyme or reason, none of my request are ever used. I don’t want to make bones about the matter but I’m mad as a hatter and thinking of throwing in the towel if you don’t promulgate at least one of my requests.

Jefferson Davis Birthday, Monday 1 June
Thanks Marina, looking forward to your calander!
How about the hog-wild Groundhog Day (Punxsutawney Phil) on February 2nd.?
What Does “Punxsutawney” Mean?
The name of the town was derived from the Native American word for sand flies, a gnat-like insect that was abundant in the area. The name “town of the ponkies” became Punxsutawney.
Marina, Here’s some other holidays:
March 8th = UN’s International Woman’s Day.
Oktoberfest, celebrates the marriage of Prince Ludwig and Princess Maria Therese on Oct. 12, 1810, but now it is celebrated from late September to October in Los Angeles, CA, Tempe AZ, and many other US Cities.
Some Russian holidays:
February 23rd = Defender of the Fatherland day, formerly Red Army Day.
May 1st = Spring and Labor Day, formerly International worker’s Day.
May 9th = Victory Day (Even though the US fought WWII until August, Russia celebrates early.)
November 4 = Unity Day, when Russia celebrates ejecting Polish invaders from Moscow in 1612.

(No, it’s NOT a Ford Fiesta, Geo, or Yugo. I have a little more class than that
congratulations on your birthday
How do you know about the dutch carnaval? it’s only held in one region small of the Netherlands, in the south(where I live)..
I think it’s one of the most ridiculous celebrations tough
Woah, you live in the Netherlands
Super cool!
Thanks for the Happy B-Day wish
Actually, I didn’t know about the carnival. However, it’s important that we get some etymologically-relevant dates, so I was looking for something that was Dutch and looked fun. After all, Marina needs to put some good dates up there, and what better thing to do than a Carnaval?
I know, there’s usually lots of drunken silliness, but at least we could say it’s a Dutch Treat
That is, unless you can think of a better Dutch festival? I LOVE when locals can tell us the “inside scoop”, or the Insider’s knowledge of their funtime activities
I don’t like any dutch festivals , I’m always amazed how grown up people can act like retards
carnaval is just the worst thing lol, bunch of people dressed like morons ,listening to awfull music? =noise ,singing(yelling),drinking beer till they end up in hospital….yeah…..
Hey! Dutch guys I had a Dutch lady friend and every time I see her in public I would greet her by saying, “Hey little Dutch girl bring those two-lips (Tulips) over next to mine.”
Saint Nicholas Day DECEMBER 6 and CHRISTMAS and your conception day
Here is a short list for now:
cannibal is connected to Columbus
Silhouette is some tightwad French finance minister use on his b-day or April 15 or some date significant to finances.

Lord, lady, comrade some day associated with bread like Bastille day or May Day for comrade.
groggy English Admiral Edward “Old Grog” Vernon
X ray German scientist Wihelm Rontgen
disease, quarantine Typhoid Mary
influenza, vaccine put on the calendar during flu season
You’re quite capable of during the follow up research.
There is more kicking around in my brain.
Have your people call my people. te hee hee
Are you going to do the etymology of one word a month? Is so you can add seasonal words such as; Xmas, Yule.
canvas is Arab for hemp and that is what Columbus sailed to this continent with wind and ect
Some of this might be better for a chapter in a book, Words Associate with Peoples Names
Marina Day!
My favorite month hands down is October and their are SO many great holidays on that month!! Some of my favorites are: World Teacher’s Day (Just for you!!)-October 5, Take your Teddy Bear to Work Day (def up their!)-October 11, Dictionary Day (another one for you)-October 16, and National Bologna Day-October 24.
World created on October 23 in 4004 BC (source: Bishop Ussher, 1581-1656)
July 16 (1945) – Atomic Age
I am become death, the destroyer of worlds.
J. Robert Oppenheimer
I think one idea would be to give the origin of the names of the month, such as January being named for Janus, god of the doorway.
How about robot this does connect to a date a book was publish.
Oh! here’s a stretch, the word pompadour this ties in to Louis XV and his mistress you could put this word in the calendar on one of their B-days. Am I on the right track
Let me sleep on it, I’ll get back to you.
Pompadour can be done on Elvis’s b-day, know what I mean
St Barbara’s Day, the patron saint of Armourers
Bastille Day
dates to add…
your birthday, my birthday, and our wedding day!!!
Monthes with a Friday the thirteenth could
be called “evil fork” day. then there are
those monthes with a second lunar cycle,
aka “blue moon”. April 18th is remembered
for the midnight ride of Paul Revere (and
my birthday!). Put a little Kobe graphic for
the “dog days” of summer.
Brits and British Commonwealth citizens will understand Boxing Day… though it is a mystery to Americans who wonder why Canadians want to fight on the day after Christmas.
How about Samuel Johnson’s birthday, 9/18/1709?
Publisher of “A Dictionary of the English Language” in 1755.
USMC birthday – discuss words like “Semper Fi”, leatherneck, devil dog

On the day that Christopher Columbus discovered America or alleged mind he did, je je je.
Or tesla, which invented the Tesla coil and politically motivated and was removed financial funds or aid, as it had intended to supply the man of power without charge, which was not interested, because this world lives on sucking effort of another sad reality that someone correct me if I am wrong.
Google traduction.
Phases of the moon could proffer a moment to mention space and moon related words and phrases… moon, lunacy, meteor, star, planet, crater, asteroid, lycanthrope, werewolf, the man in the moon, green cheese, astronaut, etc.
Each month has an associated astrological sign, birth stone, flower, etc. (discuss the origins of the word Capricorn, sapphire, Narcissus, etc.)
Days of the week are a good topic (but not just those in English). In addition you could explain the meaning of phrases like “Wednesday’s Child.”
June 11: King Kamehameha Day in Hawaii
GOOD ONE! I have been in Hawaii during this one, def should be on the calendar!!
Marina, as a linguist, you ma know September 30 is International Translators’ Day, celebrated by the International Federation of Translators
seesixcm6
linguistics doesn’t have anything to do with translations.
16/10/1758 – Noah Webster, lexicographer (Webster’s Dictionary)
30/11/1835 – Mark Twain, [Samuel L Clemens], author (Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn)
06/03/1475 – Michelangelo, painter (David)
09/09/1828 – Leo Tolstoy, Russia, novelist (War and Peace, Anna Karenina)
Marina, I forgot to mention “National Marina Day” on August 9th. It celebrates the boating industry, (but not you, Marina). seesixcm6
i’ve got a date in mind…
but probably not the same as you do…
first online OED…March 14 2000
i have annudderDate in mind, too…
Same date as you picked…special day, different reason, (TT) International Pi day a quintessential date in history, indeed.
well, then i suppose we could add 10-22…which, of course, as any good chemist could tell you, is Mole Day…
but i kinda figured Marina wanted days with an etimological slant…
oops…10-23
and etymological…
gawd…
YEAAAAAAAAAAAA………..
FINALLY!!!
Where do we sign up….where, where, where???
(1) You could note the solstices and equinoxes (with etymology)
(2) You could note Columbus Day, and perhaps throw a bone toward Amerigo Vespucci from which the name “America” comes from
(3) You could mention and explain April Fool’s Day
(4) You could note the beginning and ending of Daylight Savings Time, the inventor of the concept, and his history
(5) You could explain the differences between Gregorian and Julian calendars.
(6) Pedantickarl has lots of good ideas (below)
(7) Explain the names of the months (Ex: July and August named for Julius Caesar and Augustus Caesar, March for the Roman god Mars, etc.)
(8) Births and/or deaths of famous wordsmiths like Shakespeare (credited with creating a third of the English language) or Edgar Allen Poe (created the word “tintinnabulation” in his poetry) or those famous for their use of words (Churchill, Will Rogers, Voltaire, etc.)
Marina, There is a “Hug your Sweetheart Day” celebrated on August 23rd. seesixcm6
No, that’s every day.
said like a true sweetheart…
isn’t there a calender called gods calendar. i’m not sure exactly but i had a homeless guy talking to me about numerology, astrology, and he mention that in “gods calendar’ the year begins in march! it sounds interesting, maybe you can enlighten all of us on that? or maybe that homeless guy was a little too buzzed.
CABESONMAN
Here is one possibility…
He may have been referring to “God’s” (possessive) calendar, not “gods” (plural) calendar. The Hebrew month of Nisan is the first month of the Hebrew religious calendar. This month often occurs during March. The reference for this month is in Torah, in Vayikra (The Book of Numbers) chapter 23. Some folks who claim to study the Torah chase rabbit trails into Kaballah (Hebrew mysticism), gematria (a form of numerology), astrology, gnosticism, and other weird stuff.
In 2009 (Hebrew year 5769) the first day of Nisan is on the 26th day of March.
September 19th (every year)
is International Talk Like A Pirate Day
February 26, 2007
The historical day that you created your youtube channel !!!!
Be sure to add it !
Marina, Oh, you must include “…Be With You, Always” day….
You KNOW when that is celebrated?
It’s May the Fourth be with you, Always”
Marina, Please include the Moon Phases each month… and BTW, How did “Mooning” get it’s Meaning? Maybe you could include tiny Mooning Icons for *Full Mooning* (by the light of the silvery moon) and the *New Mooning* (for those starry starry nights)
Also, include The summer and winter Solstice
and the spring and Fall equinox….
A couple of more good words too!
March 4th! It’s the only date on the calendar that’s a command (and it just happens to be my birthday…
March forth! Why didn’t I think of that? It’s the day I LOST my freedom and got married.
May 4, 1776 – RHODE ISLAND INDEPENDENCE DAY
The date that the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations became the first American Colony to declare its independence from the British Crown – two full months before the 4th of July!
How about your birth day Marina
Revealing the Origin of Marina, Perhaps?
I changed my gravatar for awhile, actually not “sleeping”. Something else. Cheers.
Other ideas: You may not want to do these as they put more strain on your time and they may be more costly, but I thought I would mention these out loud as they may trigger other ideas.
- Advent days (Dec 1-24) or 12 days of Christmas: Have a picture of you similar to the Fuel TV photos on each of those days; either the full square or 1/2 square. Opening calendar doors may be costly; maybe remove stickers to see the picture.
- Easter: On the calendar is a link. People enter the link on your site and have to find the easter eggs, which reveal Marina bunnies.
Good one PK
Bram Stroker’s birthdate or better still “Death” date.
To go with Vampire.
Here are some dates you might consider:
- Valentine’s Day
- Trick or Treat, Halloween
- Mayday (play on words with your video)
- 4th july (Barbecue & hot dog video)
- Election day Nov 4 (Democrats & Republicans video)
- Presidents day Feb 16 (Lame duck video, etc)
- Juneteenth (end of slavery – ref feckless)
- Salmon Homecoming (see google)
- Apr 15 tax day – Sisyphean task
Marina, if you have empty days on your calendar that you want to fill, you can go to this site and click on a calendar date to see what could be used for your calendar.
http://www.on-this-day.com/onthisday/thedays/dayselect-misc.htm
April 15th…TOTALLY a Sisyphean task!!

George Bush’s birthday.
World leader in our time that bastardies the language.

How about HotForWords Day
Every day is HotForWords Day.
If you would pick one day, it might be your birthday, or the day you joined YouTube or ?
I like the day she joined YouTube. How about the HOTTEST days too!! May not be HotFORWORDS, but they were damn hot!!

National Magic Day is celebrated October 31 in honor of Harry Houdini. The great magician Houdini died on Halloween in 1926. The Society of American Magicians, known for its professional and charitable works, promotes public events and exhibits for the week leading up to this day.
Goes with Abracadabra.
There’s no National Karaoke Day.
Are you looking for the stuff like this?
oh My brithday is January 7, 1960
Dr W C Minor is the name of the man in the book The Professor and the Madman.
There’s no “etymology day”
grr sorry for my typos and bad spelling in that comment which follows
how bout the date the first Oxford English Dictionary or Etemological Dictionary came into print.
Or the birthday of Guttenberg inventor of the Press.
Or the birthday of the enventor of paper that chinese dude.
Or the birthday of the man in the Insane Assylum in the book The Professor and The Madman who did much etemological research
while he was there institutionalised. His research was a bit interrupted on that day he tried to cut his penis off as it was to him the source of all his evil, but do please, leave that date off.
That is a real book that was a best-seller, The Professor and the Madman.
I hope this is of some interest to you Marina my dear teacher.
Do you adore clean, correct sentences? Do ungrammatical advertisements make you cringe? We understand completely, and this is why the Society for the Promotion of Good Grammar and MSN Encarta have designated March 4, 2008 as National Grammar Day.
http://nationalgrammarday.com/
You can put maybe like historical dates of you career. Such as getting on the Bill O’Reilly, reaching 100 Million views, getting Kobe, and moving from your aparment. Also you can add historical days in etymology like you said along with the normal holidays such as Christmas. You can add my birthday on April 18th too.
(I’m kidding)
Hope I gave you some help.
Looking forward to copping me a calendar ASAP
How about the Etymology of the days of the week? Brief versions. Just a thought.
–Nathan
Does Oxford English Dictionary publish a new version evey year?
Their expected release date.
How much for the calendar Marina? Student discount?
Are you trying to do all 365?
Not all 365 days.. just days that are fun, with some kind of relationship to etymology… related to a story I have told as well…
You know what would sell nicely if you had 365 unique modeling photos?
A word of the day calendar 4″ x 4″ tear off style.
I’m brain storming.
But all 12 months correct?
I’m liking wetsuits suggestion. Kind of like those ESPN swimsuit calendars or those joke calendars. Seems like it would take some time to take 365 photos though. Heck, add in Kobe! He needs some love too!
i volunteer to help with the outfits…
How about Easter, the definition of calculating Easter, and who decided it.
Marina, is that the kind of stuff your looking for?
Just trying to get on the same song sheet before making suggestions.
