In Canada we use a postal code of LetterNumberLetter NumberLetterNumber. The most famous postal code we have is H0H 0H0 which is at the North Pole and gets a lot of mail… for Santa Claus.

I’m back, been a while since I been to the site. I’m trying to catch up on Videos now via the RSS feed.

In Canada, we have “Postal Codes”. 3 letters, and 3 numbers. They begin with a letter, then a number, then a letter, and so on.

    example: V8N 1B8

I’ve been told we have weird zip codes by Americans.

As for the most famous, I would have to say 90210, as it was part of the name of a famous TV show.

  5. cherrybomb says: 138

When I was at California Institute of Technology, the school had a unique zip code, 91125, and its own system of postal boxes. You could send me mail addressed “P-107, 91125″ and it would get to me without even my name.

  16. nymjk says: 126

Could you look up the origin of the term ’southpaw’ please? Thanks a lot Marina.

    • dezdkado says: 126.1

I think it comes from baseball… if one was a left-handed pitcher, one was a south-paw. Paw refers to the hand, and South refers to the orientation of that hand while the pitcher stood on the mound. Typical baseball diamonds were oriented such that batters faced east, so the sun will not interfere with their play. This meant that left-handed pitchers were using their south-sided hand.

  17. The most famous zip code must be 90210?

2utoday, “Catch 22″ is the name of a book that was made into a film. The meaning comes from that story, so there’s no real point wasting time asking about it on here. Just from memory, it’s about a pilot who will probably die in the near future if he carries on being a pilot so he tries to get discharged on grounds on insanity, but then he’s told that as no sane person would want to continue in a job where they’re likely to be killed, this proves he’s not insane. He’s told this is “Catch 22″, so it either originates in this story or in USAF regulations which govern this situation.

    • yomero says: 111.1

There is a decent synopsis of the book in Wikipedia, you could rent the movie but the book is so much better.
      Catch-22 by Joesph Heller
Many characters are left out of the movie, one character in the book, ex Private Wintergreen had me rolling on the floor laughing when I read it.

  30. 2utoday says: 110

    Marina:
I was just wondering: Where did the phrase “catch 22″ come from? I know it means a no-win situation but how did it get started? Please investigate unless you find yourself in a “catch 22″ trying to figure it out. He-he!!

    • In France when you say 22 it means “the cops are coming”.

      • And in the USA,when you say 22 to the authorities, you are letting them know you are old enough to vote, get drunk,or join the military. However, they will probably want to see photo i.d. just to be sure. Oh yeah, they may even want to take your picture and finger prints and forward them on to the FBI and Interpol if you want anything more than buy booze and get drunk. Sometimes, men in black(MIB),may follow you around for days to see if you do anything stupid like buying firearms and other strange stuff. Yeah, you never know who is out there. Yikes!!

“A pertwee”. I hope I’m posting this in the right place. I live in London and I’ve just been told that “a pertwee” is a can of drink which has already been partly drunk. This is the first time I’ve heard of it. The
user of this term said he didn’t know why it was called that. I said it might be something to do with former Doctor Who Jon Pertwee or his son Sean Pertwee. This is the first time I’ve heard of it, so I don’t know if even *you* can find out.

    • Hey Roughcut your right on the Dr Who idea, but I have never heard of a can drink half drunk called that either. I live in the states and that is the first for me. Maybe Marina can find out more for you so I am going to put the word in bold so she can find it when she looks through all the comments. Word Request “pertwee as in a half drunk can of soda I hope she helps you on this one.
      Mike

      • Thanks, but it wasn’t quite like that. The can of drink was alcoholic and I don’t think much of it had been drunk already. An idea I’ve had about it is that perhaps Jon Pertwee or Sean Pertwee was often a bit drunk, but not drunk enough and was worried about getting “too drunk”, whatever that may mean. Sean Pertwee has appeared in the historical crime series “Cadfael”, but I can’t remember what else he’s appeared in.

In Canada the postal code format, started in 1971, was alphanumeric – three characters, a letter, then a number, then a letter, then a space and three more characters, a number, a letter and a final number. For mail to Santa, the code H-0-H 0-H-0 fit this format, so it became popular. The Canadian Postal Service receives a million letters every Chrismas and attempts to answer them in the language they were originally submitted in.

I now live in Panama, where we have no postal codes and, in fact have very few street addresses either. It’s all very frustrating, particularly when almost all on-line forms insist on a postal or zip code. Most of the time we use 00000, which, of course, means nothing. It would be nice if Panama came up with at least one postal code that identified the country.

Has this ever made any slang or idiom dictionaries or did it just pass by so fast it never hit any officialdom? just curious. have NO idea why it pops into mind when visiting your site. *Rolls eyes* u r the best marina. thanks for site.

In Canada, They are called postal codes or codes postal for the french spealing community! Our postal codes are composed of 6 alternating letters and numbers to form the postal code. For example mine is G1H 6M8 and the 40 appartments in my building have the same one – To prevent errors, there are no I ’s or O’s in canadian postal codes because they could be confused with 1’s and 0’s. The most famous one would probably be H0H 0H0 “HOHOHO” for the north pole (Santa Clause)!

  40. mrchex says: 100

most famous? 90210 after the TV show i guess. Think it is Beverly HIlls.

As an aside, it’s a little silly of them to add those four digits at the end
of the five digit number, which they did fairly recently, to identify the exact house i guess. after all there is all ready a number on the house. oh boy

    • This letter was used in Old English: it was one of the two versions of the modern “th” (the smooth one, like in… “smooth” for example). This letter was named “þurisaz” and comes from the Celtic alphabet. It’s still used today in Iceland.
If you want to write it, just type Alt+0254 using your numpad. This is the code of this symbol.

  60. Dear Marina,

to answer your question: In my country we call the ZIP Code “PLZ” which is also an abbreviation an means “Postleitzahl”. From the length of this word you can figure out that I live in Germany. After our reunion the “PLZ” got five figures (earlier they were only four). Some of them even start with a zero. Small villages and towns have only one “PLZ”. Bigger towns and cities have several “PLZ”.

At the end of my message I want to mention that your appearance in the video was beautiful but I had prefered to see more of you and less of ZIP Codes.

 “Show me how you do that trick
The one that makes me scream” she said
“The one that makes me laugh” she said
And threw her arms around my neck
“Show me how you do it
And I promise you I promise that
    I’ll run away with you
    I’ll run away with you”

    Spinning on that dizzy edge
I kissed her face and kissed her head
And dreamed of all the different ways I had
    To make her glow
“Why are you so far away?” she said
“Why won’t you ever know that I’m in love with you
That I’m in love with you”

    You
    Soft and only
    You
    Lost and lonely
    You
    Strange as angels
    Dancing in the deepest oceans
    Twisting in the water
    You’re just like a dream

    Daylight licked me into shape
I must have been asleep for days
And moving lips to breathe her name
    I opened up my eyes
    And found myself alone alone
    Alone above a raging sea
That stole the only girl I loved
And drowned her deep inside of me

    You
    Soft and only
    You
    Lost and lonely
    You
    Just like heaven

My zip code in Taiwan is 23658. Recently, the zip code system here changed from 3 digits to 5 digits to make the zones finer, I think. BTW, is zip code writing a must when you send mail in US? Or is it just an option if you write the address?

 I believe the post office calls it zip+four. It is suppose to make it easier for the mail carrier to locate your address. Trouble is,only about half(if that many)bother to use the extra four digits. And when people move to a new address, they may use the the old +four digits on their new zip code which only adds confusion for the mail carrier. Also, some online companies do not allow the +four digits to be inserted on your address when you create an account with them. It is turning out to be the old “catch 22″ syndrome. That means you can’t win no matter what you do. I think I’ll go see a movie and think about it tomorrow.

  81. spiker425 says: 55

The most famous zip code must be 90210 because of the television program of the same name.

Where I live in Canada we have ‘Postal Codes’ and where I used to live in the UK they have ‘Post Codes’.

The most famous zip I presume is 90210…

    and my zip is 04330

The new england area zips all start with a Zero and many computer programs and even excel spreadsheets get confused with that LEADING ZERO and drop it… I still on occasion get mailings with only 4 digits “4330″ … and this can cause delays… otherwise my mail arrives in

    ПривEt, My Dear Teacher,

I have constructed this list of what must be the most famous three zip codes on your web site. They are, in decending order, 10314, 02136, 23453. Can you guess why? Mine is 10032.

I have a special request: you have inspired me to buy the Rosetta Stone “Learn Russian” CDs. So boring! Why don’t you start making “Learn Russian” videos? I would pay $$$:-) for such videos – so would so many of your dear students!

Just think, dear teacher, given the current state of hostilites between our two countries, you could be the instrument of friendship: suddenly, thousands of your dear students, traveling to Russia to perfect their skills; thousands of Americans living in Russia; maybe even, one day, an American with a горяче для слова (don’t laugh too hard :-) ) It only makes my point – your students need Russian videos!

    Пока,

    Lucky

      Mike

      • Hi Mike,

Seriously, it’s not bad, but I’m just starting. On my last trip to Moscow, I was lost without my business associates; I made the resolution to learn this, once and for all. So, ask me again in a few months.

Even better, perhaps our dear teacher will give us both her advice :-)

        Lucky

    • Capman911 says: 45.2

I have a friend on here his named Superdanielchik who has been trying to teach me Russian. But it’s hard since he goes to school in France and lives in Russia and I in the states. So I down loaded a program BYKI.com something like yours that has flash cards and pronounces the words for you too. It’s a simple basic program but not to hard to learn. After you get so far then they want you to buy the rest of the program. It may be worth it if I can learn the basic words first. Maybe Marina will take us under her wing and teach us the language.

      • I have been studying Russian for about 18 months now. When I first started, I used BYKI, and I really liked it and still do. However, soon after getting a little vocabulary, you *really* need to learn some grammar. Russian word order is quite a bit more free than English, so knowing the correct endings is critical to determine if, for example, you intend a word to be the subject, direct object or indirect object. However, having said that, I can tell you that with only five months of vocabulary practice, I traveled to Latvia (eastern Latvia, where mostly Russian is spoken) and could communicate on a very basic level with people. As long as you can give a noun and a verb, with a little pointing, you can communicate a surprising amount. Good luck! I love studying Russian, it’s a really interesting language.

  104. In France we use the “code postal” (post code) with 5 digits. The first two digits indicate the “département” (equivalent of state). The post code of the capital of a département ends with “000″ (44000 for Nantes for example). There are three exceptions: the biggest towns of France are divided into several “arrondissements”: 20 for Paris (from 75001 to 75020), 16 for Marseille (from 13001 to 13016) and 9 for Lyon (from 69001 to 69009).
This explanation for the zip code made me think about the origin of the expression “zip file”. I suppose it’s the same idea of speed but please, could anyone confirm it?

    • mijj says: 30.1

i think hte “zip” as in postal area is an acronym:
ie. Zone (something starting with I that i cant think of) (something starting with P that i cant think of)

      v. “zip” as in “zip file”
“zip” is used in the sense of zipping something up in a bag.

In the UK we use a Postcode in the format LLnx nLL (where L is an upper case letter, n is a digit and x is a digit or a letter).
Whereas, in USA, Europe etc. the 5 digit Zip codes only identify a commune or area of a city, in UK a postcode will identify a street or one side of a street. If you then add the house number it identifies the individual property.
Some large properties and business addresses can have a unique postcode if the volume of mail they receive justifies it, so the most famous one in UK would probably be the Queen’s London residence, Buckingham Palace, SW1A 1AA.
My postcode is classified – “For Your Eyes Only”.

    Mathematical

Brother-from-another-mother! Like mine, your highest scoring intelligence is Mathematical. You thrive on logic, numbers, things representing numbers, and sets of things that are sets of other things, with numbers nowhere in sight. You probably like the online comic called XKCD, and if you don’t, check it out.

You probably knew you’d score “Mathematical” as you took the test, and mathy types are usually super-high scorers on this axis, and low on the others. Why? Because you (we) yearn for math.

Anyway, your specific scores follow. On any axis, a score above 25% means you use that kind of thinking more than average, and a score below 25% means you use it less. It says nothing about cognitive skills, just your interest.

    Your brain is roughly:

    3. Don’t have sex with someone if your math scores differ by over 40%. You might kill them.

    • mijj says: 18.1

would you say that’s a fair assessment? .. did you ever get round to studying maths (or, as you weird yanks call it: math) seriously?

    • mijj says: 18.2

well .. i wouldnt say it’s implying you’re a mathematician .. but have that sort of essential viewpoint (even though you may not be educated that way) .. and doing badly at maths at school doesn’t mean you’re not perceptive in that way – could just means you may not have like being bound to the rigid structure of a class.

      • tryant says: 18.2.1

That *is* very possible,at least in my case. I hated math/s but loved reading, but, pretty much hated all school starting with kindergarten. Ended up in construction and using math often, albeit not the highest level math.

    • Capman911 says: 18.3

@ Tyrant same here on the math. I hated school from day one. Nothing interested me except hands on projects. I joined shop class, horticulture, anything that I could visibly learn. As it would be when I joined the fire department after graduation, we had to know Algebra to do friction loss in standpipes, fire hose, nozzles and all types of appliances. So I jumped from basic math to algebra in no time if I wanted to advance in my position. It must of worked. But I still don’t like math. Today they get to use calculators in school. We had fingers and toes.

      • mijj says: 18.3.1

i think we’re all pretty much on the same level.

i was a disruptive asshole (as you americans say) at school and did no work. .. i had an affinity for maths and art, i got top qualifications for those – and failed everything else .. i utterly bombed english language – absolutely the worst.

        - so i was doomed to a career as a manual laborer. … well … not so much doomed cos i enjoyed the freedom of it .. working and quitting as i saw fit and using my time as i wished and destroying my brain with dangerous drugs

.. but after 7 years of that i got bored of it and made a serious attempt to get back into college. (in those days, there was government encouragement and help). – and i finally learned to string a rudimentary sentence together! (still bloody clumsy, tho)

        - so i guess taht proves that, even though i was crap at the english language at school, it’s actually because i am crap at the english language.

      • mijj says: 18.3.2

Besides, having sex with a woman who is 50% mathmaticaly greater than one sounds traumatic…..so best avoid number woman however could be a great sqaure root!!!

.. on the other hand .. M has a balanced approach to her word vids .. she doesn’t just sit there spouting verbiage .. there’s lots of presentation quality.

so she’s strong visually as well as verbally. .. so that means there’s not going to be a huge difference in verbal orientation percentages. so i don’t have to fear Marina.

    • Brother-from-another-mother!

      10% Interpersonal

      15%Visual

      15%Verbal

      60%Mathematical

Matching Summary: Each of us has different tastes. Still, I offer the following advice to the world.

      1. Don’t date someone if your interpersonal percentages differ by more than 20%.

      2. Don’t be friends with someone if your verbal percentages differ by more than 25%.

      3. Don’t have sex with someone if your math scores differ by over 40%. You might kill them.

Gee, judging by my scores on this quiz, I should have no desire but every reason to enjoy this forum!

      Ciao,
      Fianchetto

      • I never realised exactly HOW far imbalanced I am until I took the quiz….

yeh .. i think the verbal thing is the hurdle we must face to take part here.

+ that’s a whopping math score .. is that a fair score? … are you studying a tech subject or in a tech job?

      • I wonder what the penalty is for “Involuntary (Wo)Manslaughter by sex with mathematical difference greater than 40%”?

Or if I could plea “Not Guilty, by reason of not having subjected partner to a mathematics examination prior to intercourse”?

        Ciao,

      • I took Trigonometry and Calculus simultaneously in High School (the Calculus class being my first college credit) and have studied to be a Nuclear Reactor operator for the USN, after that was a Paramedic, as well as a self-taught programmer of CNC turning stations, taught myself C programming language, working on C++, designed a couple of flying model aircraft for fun… wierd enough for you? I recreated a game called ‘Nim” I played as a child with my brothers to test my skill in “C”, and plan to make an accurate Windows-based replica of the German WWII enigma machines (3- and 4- rotor versions) to prove my ability in C++.

So, I am admittedly an odd duck, and happily so

hey .. if you weren’t an odd duck, you wouldn’t be posting on this site.

That’s why i like this place .. we’re all a (collective noun for ducks) of odd ducks.

Plus .. i’m (or was) pretty fair with maths (having a maths based degree) and have done a reasonable amount of programming.
        - however . i gotta say, my programming was good because i was a bad programmer (i dont mean in astructural sense, but in the details of coding sense) .. i.e. it went wrong in every possible way it could before i got a working version of whatever it was. So, in the end, my stuff was idiotproof.

plus .. i wonder how music maps onto those 4 qualities?

Your result for The 4-Variable IQ Test …
      Mathematical

      Your brain is roughly:
      15% Interpersonal
      10%Visual
      35%Verbal
      40%Mathematical

      • mijj says: 13.3.1

i think the separation of maths and visual is peculiar .. for me, a significant part of maths is visualisation.

I think they must mean the symbol analysis aspect of maths (and logic).

      • Mijj… I’m not so sure I can COMPLETELY agree with you there:

because visual information can be communicated either verbally or mathematically depending on the circumstance. for example I can communicate the Mandelbrodt set (with written verbal instruction) to
