P.S. Some times I’m so very bad
i seem to remember something about extremely long pendulums (pendula?) hung in some cathedral or something similar in rome or somewhere .. if the pendulum is extremely long, then it’s trajectory is affected by the rotation of the earth. And so it can trace an interesting pattern in the floor below it (in sand, for instance) .. i shall check to see if i can find refs or pics or something.
Apparently the name for the pendulum that is allowed to move unconstrained is the “Foucault pendulum”. And because it’s not constrained, then the path it traces is influenced by the earth’s rotation.
[Foucault's Pendulum at the Kirchhoff - Institute of Physics]
The pendulum happily swinging in the first floor of the Kirchhoff Institute of Physics proves the Earth’s rotation about its own axis. In fact, the vertical plane through which the pendulum swings to and fro is fixed in space, and our planet merely rotates beneath it – the terrestrial observer believes that it is the pendulum that moves!
[Foucault pendulum animated gif]
Animation of a Foucault pendulum showing the direction of rotation on the southern hemisphere. The rate of rotation is greatly exaggerated. A real Foucault pendulum, released from rest, does not pass directly over its equilibrium position as the one in the animation does.
well, now I can entertain my clients even more, knowing the exact origin of the word Grandfather clocks… but, you know, in the good old days, back in the hopsitrals, they would actually stop the clock when a person died to indicate the time of death……
I work on grandfather clocks, and I can tell you, some must be posessed! Some clokc sjust want to stop, to tell us something. Many times, it was with a passing of a loved one….
so I yell at the clock, chant and dance, and do the hokey-pokey, turn myself around and start the pendulum, and MOST TIMES, the clock works again….
A pendulum, 1 meter in length, has a period of 1 second. http://monet.unibas.ch/~elmer/pendulum/upend.htm
(Note: start the little java pendulum carefully pressing the start button at either the left or right extreme of the pendulum’s swing and see how the period lasts 1 second.) I tried to do the math on it, but it’s very late, and after 3 beers, my math mojo is no mo’. Anyhow, the better grandpapa clocks have the 1 meter pendulum. Or so I’ve been told. I’m pretty gullible and I still believe it.
I wanted to request a word, but more specifically an acronym – BFE. Several of my friends and I were discussing what of the phrases actually corresponds to correctly to BFE. Please clear up the confusion surronding this acronym.
My apologies for not being more specific. Wiki gives that definition (or variants such as “B*tt F*ck, Egypt,” but where did the saying originated and under what usage? I would have guess it was from WWII when Allied Forces were in Africa.
Sorry, Yelvis, for being so late in reply, but I was having issues logging on to this thread. I found this little tidbit, but I cannot confirm its validity…
“BFE or Bumblef*ck, Egypt (also Bumf*ck, Egypt, Butt F*ck, Egypt or Beyond F*cking Egypt) (vulgar), refers to an unspecified remote location or destination, assumed to be arduous to travel to, unpleasant to visit and/or far away from anything of interest to the speaker (e.g. Man, you parked way the hell out in BFE).”
“In the Chicago metropolitan area, the term was coined to refer to the region in downstate Illinois known as “Little Egypt”, centered in Cairo, Illinois, for being the furthest from the urban center in both distance and way of life.”
word request: skunked and her is an example of skunked “SR-71s were evidently detected by radar, as missiles were often fired at them. The flight characteristics of the SR-71 made it almost invulnerable during its service life; not one was shot down, despite over 4,000 attempts to do so.[11]” sorry su 27
Hello annuddermale,
She’s not platinum but she’ll “go platinum” with record sales.
Pink is definately a good color for her.
I liked her singing, I don’t understand why people give her a hard time about it. I just love her dancing. She’s busy and yet always seems so carefree and lively.
Thanks for the Will Rogers’ quotation, Teacher. Others that I like are: Benjamin Franklin aka Poor Richard, Mark Twain aka Samuel Clemens, Abraham Lincoln, and Yogi Berra – Catcher for the New York Yankees.
Marina is looking for more quotations to add to her dwindling supply. If you could find her some of the sites that you think that would fit with the profile she already has she would like that. She asked for them at the beginning of yesterdays page. Pick out some or all you can as far as urls and send them to Jack at his address attached to his name.
Link to Yogi-isms by Yogi Berra famous New York Yankee catcher famous for his malaproistic dogberryisms like comedian Norm Crosby and actor Leo Gorcey of movie classic’s Dead End Kids and the Bowery Boys. Of course one can’t forget, the late George Carlin’s many humorous quotes, like “I was thinking about how people seem to read the Bible a whole lot more as they get older; then it dawned on me – they’re cramming for their final exam.”
Attention Please. When you do a word request if you would please type in word request then the word it doesn’t have to be in bold letters, when Marina or the two TA’s do a word search for requested words we can find it by typing word request in the search engine and pull up all of the requested words. This will save Marina or us a lot of hunting through the comments one by one. Thank you for all of your support.
Marina, Captain Jack and Capman911
Good idea Capman. I wonder if it would be possible to have a separate section for word requests as apposed to comments? If the word was already requested the new requester’s name would simply be added to the list for that particular request. A ticker tape with all the requests could run across the section where the comment and word request buttons are.
Miss M is running different ideas right now as how to make it easier. That is so she want miss if two people request the same word. Right now with word request we can pull up words by using the word request search feature. It takes a little time, but we try not to leave anyone out. I think she wants to keep them like this for now as she is use to it and it keeps everyone on the same page. Thanks for the input Pig-in-a-poke. Her program has a lot of features, it’s figuring them out that takes time.
I sat here about all day and went through about 500 comments and names to pick out word requests and the ones marked word request the search feature picked right up on them. So if I left any one out I sorry.
*shrug* maybe he kept bugging her till she discovered her motherly side and eventually gave in. then he did some crap and she took his toy away again. i don’t know.
those are all produced from the same script with parameters tweaked. … i’m going to see .. after a long struggle to clean it all up, see if i can create a morphing animation. .. and use that as a vid background to some music.
dude, i fucking hate you, man. your site led me to those jigsaw puzzles and now i’ve been doing that for like three hours or something. and i’ll still be doing it in three hours. shit.
Request for a word:
When one cooks, a person prepares (preparare) food. Some say they make (machen) dinner, or create (creer) a dish, but where does the word, “to cook” come from? What does it mean ‘to cook”? We can cook the books – meaning to fabricate erroneous ledgers to hide stealing, or ask, “what’s cooking?” when we want to know what is going on. And if you “cook one’s goose”, your creating trouble. Can one cook a cookie?
Nice genre you have going there. I especially like the scholastic posts of yours. Do you also look into grammatical questions? Like why in the UK does one “go to hospital”, whereas when in the USA one “goes to the hospital”, or the indefinite article. One goes to London, but one goes to a barber, not without the article.
Regards,
9th
“Cook” comes from the Old English word “coc” which comes from the Latin “cocus” meaning “to cook”. “Cocus” comes from the Latin “coquus” which comes from the Latin “coquere” which also means “to cook, prepare food.” So, yes, one can cook a cookie. However, since cookies require a specific method of cooking, such is usually expressed as “bake a cookie.”
Some areas of English grammar change regionally within the USA, not just between the UK. Canada, and the USA. Some in the US do say “go to hospital” as well as “go to the hospital.” There are also colorful colloquialisms such as “ride the banshee to the butcher shop” (ride in an ambulance to hospital) or “go to the doc”, “see the sawbones”, “consult the undertaker”, and others.
hi dear hope you are doing fine
i want to ask about the meaning of this word TNT written in dynamite or bombs
i didn\’t find it hope you will help me
thanks a lot
Marina, what do I think?
I think it is fortunate you do not have to sing for your supper, or you would starve!
My ears!
My Ears!
It Burns!!
It Burns!!!
Do you know they have Grandmother’s clocks too?
Do you know how they came to be called Grandmother’s clocks?
(Nice chair, BTW.)
Keep your day job.
hehe. all those “bad grammar” dudes whining about wrong language or whatever of that timbaland song should’ve checked out you are what you is by zappa and try to do a “parody” of him. they’d have failed. miserably.
I having a mental image of Marina back in the late 1800’s singing this song.
I think that’s even before boop boop be doop.
I can hear the women folk gasping at the pink mini skirt.
And the guys are smiling and whooping it up.
You’re a bastard. And I am finished being a little shit-bugger and defacing the test page.. I love talking like that.. It sounds so naughty in a funny way . Like when my cat scratches the carpet and my mum tells him off but I laugh.
because people think that a misspelled word is just “wrong”, and in spelling it how it is spelled in a dictionary they are “right”, and therefore probably on a higher level regarding knowledge or intelligence or something.
also, it’s interesting how people start to point out misspellings if they feel attacked or offended by what the other one wrote. ever noticed that?
Pink the color of account closed on you tube.
I got a new story to tell about my boy hood. I never told anyone about this one time after I got my first bb gun I was about 6 or 7 years old and got a bb gun for my birthday or christmas time because those days are only 5 days apart. As a family we lived on a ranch in central Texas in the vicinty of a small community called Proctor. It was a large ranch for those days and was covered in groves of live oaks and scattered mesquite trees, Father just leased the ranch from an egg famer who had a large chicken house for raising chickens for egg production and the meat market. The mans name as I recall was Rockewell and His eggs were marketed under the name of Rockwell Eggs. One day I got the bright idea that all those light bulb in that chicken house would make good targets for my bbs and shot them all out. I got into a bit of trouble over that. However thats not the story I am wanting to tell but of another mystery when one time I was walking down one of the cow trails out beside our house towards the west was a grove of live oak trees, as approached the trees there was a old log laying across the trail. As I aprroaced this log a snake like i had never seen before raised up from behind the log and started hissing at me. It was something akin to a cobra or adder as it flaired out its neck just below it’s head and just set there hissing at me. Being the hunter that i was i proceded to shoot it with my bb gun but the bbs just would stun it and make it madder untill it started to chase me and came out from behind the log and then I was able to shoot in the back of the head enough times to stun and knock it out out or kill it. I don’t if it was dead or not but i assumed it was. The mystery is how such a snake came to be in central Texas as I have never seen or heard of such a species of snake in Texas nor have I seen such as one since. Oh well, such is the mystery of life in this universe. How does this relate to clocks, well all clocks aren’t mechinacal some are based on life cycles and unknown knowledge only revealed at the time of need. anyway a recent occurance in my life someone shot a hole in my 1 ton truck which was depicted as a horse in another one of my storys. A bullet struck it just above the door in the cab about 3 inches behind the windshield sort opf akin to shooting a horse in the head to put it out of it’s misery as if it had broken it’s leg.
it was a mercy killing, stoke .. i’m afraid .. well .. you see .. his tyres were worn, and the engine block … {.. sob..} .. he couldnt take it no more.
Good morning. I absolutely love your website!! I’ve told all my friends about it, especially the guys. Could you please investigate the word or phrase “oopsy daisy”? I think it’s quite strange, that we say that when we mess up or make a mistake. Thanks Hot for Words!
Heidi
I think that’s mean, why cant they just give the kids rice? Also that makes people think that people in 3rd world countries only get paid in rice for working for Nike and we are helping them by giving them more.. They measure out grains of rice?? God, they should be measuring out foundations for hospitals..
I posted that a while ago to i think, it think it’s stupid tough….Wy can’t they just give them a bag of rice right away….what’s more importent ,learning some stupid person a word(that he forgets after a minut orso because the words they ask are so simple if they don’t know those ,then they can’t remember anything…:???: ) or saving a child from starvation…….
Marina, congratulations for your video.
Well, I would like to add a little comment to your explanation. There a was a tradition in the 19th century: when the master of the house died, people stopped the clock. You can see it in this video.
This is an extract of a French film called Jean de Florette (based on a novel by Marcel Pagnol). The moment when the clock is stopped in the video is just after the four first minutes.
I didn’t know that Gallileo had designed the grandfather clock, but didn’t finish it. If I remember rightly, Leonardo Da Vinci, had made sketches of what would have been part of a helicopter (not the roflcopter) However, the first working helicopter wasn’t invented until centuries later.
Howdy Marina,
I was abou to fall asleep when someone came into my rom and said dont let the bedbugs bite… why do parents tell that to thier kids what does it mean
Hope to see a video of why this is

Hi Marina, I was working late when after calling it a night at 4am, a thought of the phrase ‘goodnight, sleep tight’ popped into my wee brain….sleep tight, why is this?? How does sleep tight get involved? I sleep very relaxed taking over all of the bed, but never do I sleep tight!! — Clocks, beards and death! Keeping clocks wound up helps elders to maintain routine and fitness, should elder become lazy or forgetful, clock stops ticking, elder bearded blokes brain thinks its quiet so must be shutting down, dies — singing is improving greatly ….you are most dazzling, BTW, couldn’t see your birth mark on those legs that go on for miles Thanx again M
Dear Marina, you posted your video late Sunday night, and I’d already gone to bed. BTW, you have beautiful legs. We sang the Grandfather’s clock song as children. You had the right lyrics, but the original song had a different melody. For your homework, the clock is a mechanical device and eventually, parts will break down. We were all certain that the Grandfather clock was repaired and it kept working for another 90 years. Your dear student, seesixcm6

This type of sundial is a variety of the classic equatorial sundial, often referred to as a “bowstring equatorial sundial” (similar to the “bow” in “bow & arrow”).

A nice story and another mystery solved.
When you reach puberty, you will understand, and I am sure that no one will have to explain it to you. Just be patient, you will soon come to recognize females as objects of affection, too.
Unless, of course you are homosexual (no offense intended, please), but whatever the case, you will surely come to a point in your life at which you will recognise the wonders of love and being in love. And when that time comes I hope that you love your partner, whatever gender, as deeply as I love Carol. Further, I wish you every bliss in your pursuit of romance, and in the finding of it. There is nothing more wonderful to me than to find someone to love, and devote every fiber of my being to promoting the love, and in particular, that individual to the utmost understanding of my devotion to her.
May all the loves in your life bring you similar fond memories as those in my life have brought me.

Get lost.. Why reply to my comment huh?? You are just asking for a fight
Teacher-
Another stunning lesson… You continue to feed the brain with knowledge! Here is a question… Why are the stairs in front of a brownstone house called a “stoop”?? I live in NYC, and brownstone houses are quite common in Brooklyn, and Manhattan…
Thats a sad story My grandfather (expert in clocks) bought 2 fake rolexes that looked very real.. When he took them to court they broke in to his house and stole about £50,000 worth of clocks.. Most of them went..
Hello!! teacher! about a month or two i requested a word but you didn’t do the research well this time i am requesting another and i hope you do the research. from where did the word “toilet” came from?? hope you don’t mind explaining
What do I think?
Pretty in Pink.
Awesome performance in this one, Marina.
After all the rude remarks you got for the Karaoke video, I think you are really brave to keep doing these musical sketches – you have more balls than all your fans together and have my eternal admiration.
haha foxbow left his auto clicker running overnight.. He almost has caught up with me after i overtook him by 50000 votez hahaha.. I shall beat him… I find him shallow and pendantc!
OMG! When does your CD get released Marina? You are a singing sensation!
Your assessment of the clock stop seems most prudent and very plausible. I therefore agree with you. You hotness in pink had no influence on this determination.
That’s very interesting about a song that made Grandfather Clocks famous. Are there also Grandmother Clocks? I thought I was told this, when I was very young, and while admiring a Grandfather Clock at a relative’s house.
Wow. I’m glad I had decided to stay awake for a little while longer, or I would have never stumbled upon your web-page. I find your knowledge amazing, and I respect you very much for this! I do in fact have a request for you, could you possibly look up the word “Catch 22,” for me? If you are able to, that would be amazing! Thank you existing, you have really made me hopeful for people learning proper English, and also new words.
Search Wikipedia there is a decent explanation there, rent the movie or even better read the novel. The book is real funny in some parts.
Catch -22 by Joseph Heller.

Marina, i have a word for you to pronounce and describe. My word is pneumoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis. It is an actual word and a medical term. I heard it the other day and figured that you could shed some light on this.
Marina made an allusion to this word in one of her previous videos: “floccinaucinihilipilification”. She refused to pronounce it but invited people to register videos of them saying this mysterious word: congratulations to RaveBabyFuu who did it!
Objects have a kind of magical power in themselves. When people die many keep these objects as a kind of souvenir.
The clocks are specially able to excite imagination because they can work many years and even centuries and they are like living beings because of these tick tacks… I personally have an iron dog from my grand-father and I keep it as a kind of telephone with the other world.
Sorry, I have another word and couldn’t wait for the next post. What is the origins of the word PREPOSTEROUS? I think I spelled that correctly.
Thanks a Million
DaughterOfTheos
Puzzling word.

POST=After
ER=Hesitation
O=Exclamation
US=You and Me, Not aLx, United States, UnServiceable …
No USe, hotforwords must investigate.
Hi my dear teacher Marina,
Today we learned about the “Grandfather’s clock”
But what about the “Grandmother’s clock?
Where did it come from?
Your student wants to know.
HotForWord;
I was curious about the origins of the word Rainbow, especially as the word bow implies tied, which we both know is not the shape of a rainbow.
Cheers, (Where did that come from as well?)
DaughterOfTheos
Back in the day cookoo clocks were all the rage.
To keep this clock running you had to pull the weights up every so often.
The weights being suspended on a chain which attached to the clock gears.
Cookoo is another onomatopoeia, I guest all those written sounds in a Batman comic are examples also.
Choo Choo is leaving the station.
In the 1995 Jame Bond movie ‘GoldenEye’, Minnie Driver had a small part as a Russian Country & Wester singer; I thought her fake accent was hilarious. But after hearing Marina, maybe she wasn’t that far off.
I just saw a TV rerun of that movie a couple of weeks ago and I remember that scene. I didn’t pay that much attention to her to be aware that was Minnie Driver. I also learned from the opening credits that Tina Turner’s song ‘Goldeneye’ was actually written by Bono and The Edge from U2.
Great info on the grandfather clock. Even though you were cute singing the song, you might consider singing lessons. Your voice isn’t bad,but could use some professional training. With the right training, you could land a singing contract. Keep up the good work with your word investigations. They are really great!!!!!
My Grandmother has a ‘Grandfather Clock’ I am destined to inherit, but is wound weekly. I lift the weights on saturdays and it runs through the week, chimes and all. Was hand made by her brother, though the movement was by the Emperor company. I treasure it now, even though it is yet to be my own, and intend to keep it in operation in memory of my uncle who built it and for my grandmother whom I dearly love until I die and pas it on to my begotten or one of my brothers, whichever the case. I shall treasure it until I die.

Watch comes from the Old English wæccan, which means to keep watch, to be awake… it is basically the same word as the Old English wacian which also means to be awake.. where the word wake comes from.
Now.. this word basically meant keeping watch at night as a form of protection…. it transferred around 1585 to a nautical term as the period of time in which a ship’s crew would remain on deck.. their watch. In 1440, they called a clock that would wake people a watch and the in 1588 it started referring to a small timepiece.
So… the word watch meant to keep watch at night.. where the verb comes from today and is related to the word wake as well.. and it eventually referred to a clock that would wake someone.. like an alarm clock today.. and eventually referred to a small time-piece that you wear on your wrist.
Tim Berners Lee speaking at the BBC website in the article “Warning on the Webs Future” said in his last sentence … “…….what I’m actually going to go along with and what is bunkum”. What is the origin of ‘bumcum’
I so love your work…truly inspiring.
My aunt has one.. My mums cousin had a grandfather clock and it was too big for the house so they cut a hole in the cieling I HAVE no idea how to spell that
I believe you could “wind up” any grandfather Marina!
Now,in the interest of fairness,I gotta say,You looked to be having a load of fun doing the song and it was *far* better than Your karaoke,You are redeemed with some to spare.
I think the clock workings were tied to the grandfather’s life in some metaphysical fashion. His life thread and the clock’s were as one, when His thread ended the clock stopped ticking,no amount of winding could make it start again.
hello Marina
this is my first post and i hope u can read it
i’ve got, what i think is, a little bit of a challenge for you here, years ago in this show called worst case scenario they used to do this kind of trivia on phobias and i remeber this one in particular because i never guessed it… so i thought who better to solve this mystery than my favorite and sexiest teacher HOT FOT WORDS!!!
so anyways here’s the word:
“Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia”
hope you can see this post and make a vid about the word xP
thx dude but i want to know the word’s (if u can call that a word) origin like for example arachnophobia arachno comes from spider in greek right s i wanna know where does the word come from
First I want you to explore your feelings, is your abstinance helping you? ask yourself some questions… is my imagination running away with me? Could it be a mistake to not look at the vids? kind of be a little more familiar, there is no guarantee that M will do another vid tomorrow. Is there really More than this?
Oh, and a clue, the ab crunches do wonders. ok 2nd clue pink.
When do you sleep? I don’t know what you mean by cured?
Another clue Lecture from a chair & singing by the enchanting one… When you are ready this is Marina unrehersed. You don’t like cocomment so it’s somewhat safe for you if you’ve made good progress.
i had years of working as a manual labourer in my youth .. and i did a lot of night shift work .. (the most screw uppy being 12 hour nights 4 days on, four days off) … my sleep patterns have been ruined ever since .. + … if i need to get anything done usin’ mi ‘ed, it’s best done through the night anyway.
cured of my unreal fascination with M, of course. – very unhealthy indeed.
Oh & the song…
Video request was by gawdess559 & her dog, “Max” who looked a little less than happy about going on camera… then settles in for the long haul.
I think chevolay or someone else is much mor

(Note: start the little java pendulum carefully pressing the start button at either the left or right extreme of the pendulum’s swing and see how the period lasts 1 second.) I tried to do the math on it, but it’s very late, and after 3 beers, my math mojo is no mo’. Anyhow, the better grandpapa clocks have the 1 meter pendulum. Or so I’ve been told. I’m pretty gullible and I still believe it.
Great song, and great singing on your part! (impressive improvement since the karaoke video) Keep practicing…

Marina,
I wanted to request a word, but more specifically an acronym – BFE. Several of my friends and I were discussing what of the phrases actually corresponds to correctly to BFE. Please clear up the confusion surronding this acronym.
Thanks!

Bum F*ck, Egypt
My apologies for not being more specific. Wiki gives that definition (or variants such as “B*tt F*ck, Egypt,” but where did the saying originated and under what usage? I would have guess it was from WWII when Allied Forces were in Africa.
yelvis

On the subject of quote of the day:
Yogism would work well as quotes especially in this case since Yogi Berra

I wish I had an answer to that because I’m tired of answering that question.

Hello annuddermale,
She’s not platinum but she’ll “go platinum” with record sales.
Pink is definately a good color for her.
I liked her singing, I don’t understand why people give her a hard time about it. I just love her dancing. She’s busy and yet always seems so carefree and lively.
The grandfather’s clock was too “large” for the shelf. It doesn’t make sense for it to be too “light” for the shelf.
Yesterday I was on that research, now I know what to do with the URLs.
Check this out,
http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/y/yogi_berra.html
Quotes like that is what she wants.
That’s just great. Marina can pick up on these when she reviews the comments section. Good work.
Casey Stengel quotes.
The Brainy Quote website has everything Marina will need for the next 1000 years. Many quote from many nations, from many authors over many centuries.
What’s Marina favorite Russian author? I’m sure there is a quote at this site.

Benjamin Frankin’s quotes such as: A slip of the foot you may soon recover, but a slip of the tongue you may never get over.
Abraham Lincoln’s quotes such as: Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.
Mark Twain’s quotes, such as: A man’s character may be learned from the adjectives which he habitually uses in conversation.
Okay, I’m out of hear.
Marina, you should be on American Idol!
I’d like to se the HotForWords toolbar.

This makes good sense, with the search engine and all.
I love the smell of progress in the evening.
I sat here about all day and went through about 500 comments and names to pick out word requests and the ones marked word request the search feature picked right up on them. So if I left any one out I sorry.
this “attention please” notice might be better in the sidebar somewhere because this is going to be lost in the thread and not seen by most people.

Hi Night flame. I live near Fort Bragg so I can tell you that it means Government Issue.

Regards,
9th
We sometimes say (in the UK) “go to the hospital”. It depends on if you mean a specific one or not
“Cook” comes from the Old English word “coc” which comes from the Latin “cocus” meaning “to cook”.
Oh.. I think marina caught on to me and has stopped me from going 4 levels deep.. Can’t blame me for trying though?

why do some people complain when they see a word spelled wrong?
surely, if they know how it’s “supposed” to be spelled, then they know what the word is .. so why do they need it spelled as it’s “supposed” to be?
because people think that a misspelled word is just “wrong”, and in spelling it how it is spelled in a dictionary they are “right”, and therefore probably on a higher level regarding knowledge or intelligence or something.
also, it’s interesting how people start to point out misspellings if they feel attacked or offended by what the other one wrote. ever noticed that?
ah yes .. i’m familiar with that from the Guardian forum
.. a well used strategy .. requires no thought or insight to undermine the thread of an argument.

could you please find out the origin of “Rock and Roll”?
A bullet struck it just above the door in the cab about 3 inches behind the windshield sort opf akin to shooting a horse in the head to put it out of it’s misery as if it had broken it’s leg.
sorry
that was me.
I was aiming for the truck’s leg .. crappy shot i’m afraid.
I bought that automobile with a small amount of my inheirtance money so in effect you shot my father.
it was a mercy killing, stoke .. i’m afraid .. well .. you see .. his tyres were worn, and the engine block … {.. sob..} .. he couldnt take it no more.
the tires were less than 3 years old and the engine only had 90,000 miles on it just a small number for a diesel engine.
oh .. well .. maybe i got the wrong vee hickle. Sorry about that.
Good morning. I absolutely love your website!! I’ve told all my friends about it, especially the guys. Could you please investigate the word or phrase “oopsy daisy”? I think it’s quite strange, that we say that when we mess up or make a mistake. Thanks Hot for Words!

Hiy-de-hiy!
aLx, The kids love the Free Rice site, their teacher likes it too, now they use it in class.
Thanks for mentioning it.
I think that’s mean, why cant they just give the kids rice? Also that makes people think that people in 3rd world countries only get paid in rice for working for Nike and we are helping them by giving them more.. They measure out grains of rice?? God, they should be measuring out foundations for hospitals..
That does not take away the educational value of this website
actually, i didn’t come up with it. credits go to buzzword.

I knew about this for ages.. I think they could do more than rice.. What nutrition can you possibly gain from that??
It has kept Asians fed for eons.
Glad you said it Capman
I posted that a while ago to i think, it think it’s stupid tough….Wy can’t they just give them a bag of rice right away….what’s more importent ,learning some stupid person a word(that he forgets after a minut orso because the words they ask are so simple if they don’t know those ,then they can’t remember anything…:???: ) or saving a child from starvation…….
after level 30 it becomes a little more difficult….., still stupid tough.
I think I already learned the origin of the word “grandfather clock” on the Antiques Roadshow.
My father has an grandfather clock
Do you mean “cock” ?
Oh my god .. I am sorry marina…. Please do not boot me out.. I am sorry.. I just wanted to know if it was possible.. I didnt think it was… Oh god

If you can’t see the video, try this link.
Dear teacher,
This was an hilarious lessen. Guess I’ll never forget grandfather clocks.
Cool video Marina!!
You look great in pink by the way
I didn’t know that Gallileo had designed the grandfather clock, but didn’t finish it. If I remember rightly, Leonardo Da Vinci, had made sketches of what would have been part of a helicopter (not the roflcopter)
However, the first working helicopter wasn’t invented until centuries later.
A+ Marina well done!! By Kaibanator
Last link was supposed to show this. Sorry for the mixup
I understand that the grandfather clock stopped because nobody wound it, but why did the sundial as well?

Dear Marina, you posted your video late Sunday night, and I’d already gone to bed. BTW, you have beautiful legs. We sang the Grandfather’s clock song as children. You had the right lyrics, but the original song had a different melody. For your homework, the clock is a mechanical device and eventually, parts will break down. We were all certain that the Grandfather clock was repaired and it kept working for another 90 years.

OMG What is with that gravatar..?
You take offense at a man and woman in love?
Sorry, James. I just saw your YouTube posts.

In light of our friend James’ refusal to discuss the issue in an alternate forum, and wishing not to pollute your site with our petty bickering, I wish to humbly request that both threads be deleted if possible, as I wish no longer to continue this discussion here, nor have this thread-gone-bad remain as an eyesore on your site.

Teacher-
Another stunning lesson… You continue to feed the brain with knowledge!
Hello!! teacher! about a month or two i requested a word but you didn’t do the research
well this time i am requesting another and i hope you do the research. from where did the word “toilet” came from?? hope you don’t mind explaining
John.
How’s it goin’? Where does the word “pine” originate. As in: to pine for.
In a sentence
” My buddy is pining for Marina after seeing her wear that pink tank top.”
Thanks. Rob K.
pink tank top
The Best Weekend Ever site is still taking votes.
Two more people voting will take Marina over 4000.

Word request: ottoman.
You look really cute in pink, Marina!
Also, I realized I had forgotten to place the word “for” right after “Thank you.” … Just pretend it’s there. Thank you again.

I am not a old clock but if I don’t get
wound up a couple times a week I will stop too.
Fact;
A stopped clock is right more often
then one that runs slow.
A stopped clock precisly right twice a day
RRR that gravatar really confuses me its not what I am used to.. And i cant get used to it.. I always think i am replying to someone that doesnt go on much.. But then i realize its you after thinking “where is RRR of late?” tis very irritating

She refused to pronounce it but invited people to register videos of them saying this mysterious word: congratulations to
RaveBabyFuu who did it!
Marina is such a great singer.
And so much prettier than this one.
Why is it called a grandfather clock? What if I told you it was named after a song? I would say you had bats under your hats
In a word…diet…wow!
Sorry, I have another word and couldn’t wait for the next post. What is the origins of the word PREPOSTEROUS? I think I spelled that correctly.
Thanks a Million
DaughterOfTheos
Puzzling word.
PRE=Before
POST=After
ER=Hesitation
O=Exclamation
US=You and Me, Not aLx, United States, UnServiceable …
No USe, hotforwords must investigate.
Hi my dear teacher Marina,
Today we learned about the “Grandfather’s clock”
But what about the “Grandmother’s clock?
Where did it come from?
Your student wants to know.

HotForWord;
I was curious about the origins of the word Rainbow, especially as the word bow implies tied, which we both know is not the shape of a rainbow.
Cheers, (Where did that come from as well?)

Stop thinking ribbons in your hair and start thinking strings and arrows.
a clock that chimes this song http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=0wXiJgCRH4Y&feature=related
I prefer this song;
Ukulele Orchestra of GB – Teenage Kicks
Back in the day cookoo clocks were all the rage.

To keep this clock running you had to pull the weights up every so often.
The weights being suspended on a chain which attached to the clock gears.
Cookoo is another onomatopoeia, I guest all those written sounds in a Batman comic are examples also.
Choo Choo is leaving the station.
What is the origin of the name “Lazy Susan”?
In the 1995 Jame Bond movie ‘GoldenEye’, Minnie Driver had a small part as a Russian Country & Wester singer; I thought her fake accent was hilarious. But after hearing Marina, maybe she wasn’t that far off.
I just saw a TV rerun of that movie a couple of weeks ago and I remember that scene. I didn’t pay that much attention to her to be aware that was Minnie Driver. I also learned from the opening credits that Tina Turner’s song ‘Goldeneye’ was actually written by Bono and The Edge from U2.
Yes, really… I want a teacher like you… but I’m studyng in an university, so.. is difficult … so anyway, What is the origin of the next word: “Latin”
So, greetings from Mexico!
I shall treasure it until I die.

i was wondering what the word “wake” came from. you can wake up or make a wake in the water.
Or go to a wake after someones funeral?
That was covered only a few vids ago!!
You should spend less time staring down M’s cleavage and more time paying attention to her lips and tongue – and eyes.
I really think you deserve harsh punishment from M.
no. i checked the list and wake was not on there. so show me the video and i will believe you.
i didn’t actually see the vid .. but M kindly provided me with an outline …

Tim Berners Lee speaking at the BBC website in the article “Warning on the Webs Future” said in his last sentence … “…….what I’m actually going to go along with and what is bunkum”. What is the origin of ‘bumcum’
I so love your work…truly inspiring.
‘Bumcum’….. That sounds disgusting….. It sounds like a hobo ejaculating.
I don’t think Miss M would do this word. So please take this explanation.
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=bumcum
Pretty in pink…….yellow…..red……purple……….
Is there a Grandmother clock?
Yea, they are just a smaller version
My aunt has one.. My mums cousin had a grandfather clock and it was too big for the house so they cut a hole in the cieling I HAVE no idea how to spell that
A for effort, James…is CEILING (from the French word for sky, I think.
Handy little rule for “IE” vs. “EI” is:
” “I” before “E”, except after “C”, and when it sounds like “A” as in “NEIGHBOR” and “WEIGH” ”
Ciao,

Or, on your side of the pond, ‘Neighbour”
Hey!
I want to know how the word “swimmingly” came about. Does it have anything to do with the action of swimming?
Dont be silly!
Hey, idk, maybe once upon a time it did.
Great lesson and I loved the singing. The Shay Carl reference was funny. Excellent video.
do the word “wine” its original origin and its varieties!
really goog beverage!
Maybe it comes from the word “vine” as in grape vine.

“Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia”
hope you can see this post and make a vid about the word xP
thx in advance take good care
Its fear of long words .
thx dude but i want to know the word’s (if u can call that a word) origin like for example arachnophobia arachno comes from spider in greek right s i wanna know where does the word come from
I have seen that kind of clock since my childhood. But it seldom appear now. Thanks Marina for the vivid explanation. The song is like folk song.
ok you lot .. i’m going to do the usual begging for info routine…
.. could someone clue me in about the vid?
First I want you to explore your feelings, is your abstinance helping you? ask yourself some questions… is my imagination running away with me? Could it be a mistake to not look at the vids? kind of be a little more familiar, there is no guarantee that M will do another vid tomorrow. Is there really More than this?
Oh, and a clue, the ab crunches do wonders. ok 2nd clue pink.
actually, messing with the vid clip for my graphics experiment .. i was seeing M’s form in an objective way.
… looks like i’m on my way to bein cured.
ps .. i neutralise your mournful sentimental music with [this].
– very unhealthy indeed.
i’ve seen a few pics like that girl on the chair thing. .. good stuff.
and … lol … nope .. not gonna watch the marina thing. Nearly cured ent nearly enough.
Oh & the song…
Video request was by gawdess559 & her dog, “Max” who looked a little less than happy about going on camera… then settles in for the long haul.
I think chevolay or someone else is much mor
