POPTUB

Maria from the POPTUB channel on YouTube asked me the origin of their name… so I investigated.

It’s a fun channel, you should definitely check it out.

They also interviewed me last week, and it was a pretty long interview.  I talked about my other favorite channels (I mentioned lisanova, misscupcake1, filiskun), how I got started, what’s my secret ingredient to YouTube success, my upcoming book, etc… but none of that made it to the final piece which was rather short.  So I am a bit bummed as I wanted to promote those other channels plus I feel that the other information was more interesting.

Check it out and tell me what you think.

 This video made a historic first! It’s the lowest rated HotforWords video: 2 STARS!!!!!! And a disclaimer YIKES!!!!
Dear teacher don’t blame me I gave it 5 stars! I would give it 5 more stars if it I could rate it again!

i thought lisanova was fairly interesting too

  6. mrchex says:

kinda fun. They ain’t got no word origins there tho.

I think we hve generation gap and i am out of touch cuz my word requests so far seem not to ring pleasing to the young, distinguished ear of yourself. Perhaps continued viewing will bring me to present time.

  7. James says:

Marina.. What the hell is going on.. Its been nearly 3 days and no video.. I will die if this carries on!

  8. whitehawk says:

    hey marina
i was wondering if you could tell me about how names got there meaning, was it a word in another language or what.

PS you could guess my name from my call sign. so y is it the meaning of my name?

  9. shane says:

I apologize if I’m making too many word requests at once, but I’ve had a very inquisitive weekend!

    1) Pandora’s Box. Who is Pandora and why is opening her box a bad thing?

    2) Mach. When did we start referring to the speed of sound as Mach 1, twice the speed of sound as Mach 2, etc. And why was Mach used as the term to indicate this?

    3) Take it with a grain of salt, as in when someone tells you something that may or may not be correct. What does taking a grain of salt have to do with questioning the validity of something you hear?

    4) a “scratch” golfer. Why does the term scratch mean someone who can typically shoot a even par round.

    5) Staying on the golf theme from the Ryder Cup this weekend, why is a sand trap referred to as a “bunker”. Isn’t a bunker a military stronghold? Why did golf adopt this as a term for a simple sand box?

    6) Last golf one… why does golf refer to the average score on a hole as ‘Par’, and shooting one less is called a birdie, two less an eagle, one over is a bogie, etc. Have they always kept score this way, or was it once just simply a number like in other sports?

    7) Why is zero referred to as LOVE in tennis. And for that matter, why does the first two points count as 15, but the third and forth count as 10?

    8) Gone for good. Why if something is gone forever is it called good? If someone goes bald, I don’t think they’s say losing their hair was gone for good. :)

    9) And finally, I’m curious about the words lunch, dinner, and supper. Breakfast is straight forward enough. You are breaking your fasting from not eating all night. Bruch is just a combination of breakfast and lunch. But where did Lunch, Dinner and Supper come from? And why do we have two words (dinner and supper) for the same meal?

    • mrchex says:

Pandora’s Box is a good request. Heard it some time back. Some mythology thing. Perhaps marina will get the full story for us.

    • Don’t the schools teach Greek mythology anymore??
wow – that was basic primer stuff when I was in school…
You do have a few interesting requests. Marina is
getting quite a long list of new words to look at.
With all the golf word requests, I thought you might
like this bit by Robin Williams. ADULT HUMOR

    • I heard an explanation of Pandora’s Box as actually being Pandora’s Jar. Boxes were not used in ancient Greece. Jars were used for containing cargo on ships, etc. I still say Pandora’s Box, too. The box contained all the evils that were let loose on Earth. Sounds like the story of Adam and Eve taking a bite of the forbidden fruit, doesn’t it? The box was closed before Hope could escape. Now, here is the riddle: Why would Hope be in the box of evils?

    • animalntaz says:

For question #7, she already done a video on “love” and how it relates to tennis, in one of her word/lessons.

Dear совершенная Marina, Many of your students say they like you so much, but do they actually treat you right? Do they send you bouquets of flowers every week? When you described your favorite perfume in your “Cologne” video, did everyone mail you some perfume? (No one should send you chocolates because you keep yourself so slender.) “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend”, so they must send you lots of jewelry, hmm? Some commenters act so possessive of you, you’d think they’ve showered you with gifts. I hope this post shames them into being nice to you! Your dear student, seesixcm6

    • Capman911 says:

Oh aren’t you the smooth one. Jump up here and make the rest of us look bad. Shame on you. How many flowers or jewelery or cologne have you sent to Marina. You make us sound like a bunch of non caring hoodlums. hahaha

  18. My Dear Teacher,

I watched your interview by Poptub, but it seems they took it down. You asked for help with the word, gizmo. Below are the best results I could find.

    http://www.answers.com/topic/gizmo

    Word Origin: gizmo

    Origin: 1942
How did we win the war? Well, we had the right gizmo when we needed it. The term is an honorable American invention, like doodad (1877) and doohickey (1914), the latter a Navy word that helped us win World War I. A couple of decades later, when we had to make the world safe for democracy all over again, we added to our arsenal both whatchamacallit (1942) and the modern gizmo.
Nobody knows where gizmo came from, but we think the Marines told it to us. The evidence is from two articles, both published in November 1942. Leatherneck magazine explained, “When you need a word for something in a hurry and can’t think of one, it’s a gizmo.” And Yank that month agreed: “Leathernecks…even have a name for a whatsis. They call it a ‘gizmo.’” Gizmo survived the transition to civilian life and has become an indispensable verbal tool of modern technological civilization.

  21. SurfinRI says:

    Dear Marina:

This POPTUB video is nothing more than a cross-promotional commercial for you and them. I’m very disappointed that you’re allowing yourself to be used in this way and taking advantage of your loyal fanbase in the process. You do this at the risk of jeopardizing your own brand in the marketplace. You have the real talent. All of these hangers-on are going to ruin what you’ve worked so hard to create! Stop the insanity!!!

    • pedanticKarl says:

Hello SurfinRI, you are entitled to your opinion, but I am disappointed that you are disappointed. Did you read any of Marina’s descriptions and or comments above and on You Tube?

After Pop Tub interviewed Marina, it was totally Marina’s idea to promote Pop Tub via an etymology spin. So, Marina wasn’t being used. She is talented and knows the value of promoting herself and others. What comes around goes around.

I could go on about Marina’s success as I have watched her grow from day one through not only self promotion, but her selfless promotion of others. Marina goes out of her way to help others be successful.

She said on YT that the promotion of other sites is a good thing. Promotions can take many forms, such as collaborations or explicit requests to subscribe to a channel as SxePhil recently promoted Marina in one of his videos.

Promotions is the harsh reality of life and you may not have ever heard of HFW had it not been for some promotion of some kind to get you here.

I clicked on your name which took me to what looks like your commercial web site. Should I tell Marina that I am offended that she might be underhandedly be promoting your commercial site? So, are you really serious about what you said?

      • SurfinRI says:

Your points are well taken but I just think the pendulum has swung too far. I became a “HotForWords” fan because of Marina’s clever and instructive videos and wasn’t seeking any sort of promotion for a site of my own. Too many of her recent videos have become pitches for some other endeavors and I think that her focus on etymology has suffered for it. The word origin of “POPTUB”? – Give me a break!

    • pedanticKarl says:

Hi SurfinRI, thanks for your reply. I can understand where you are coming from and like you, I have winced when the etymology lessons are interrupted with commercial promotions.

Marina is sensitive to feedback and I’m sure she will reflect on what you and I are saying. She has shown great interest in resolving advertisement issues in the past such as has happened on this site from time to time. But, she is juggling many issues including how to pay for server bandwidth and many other things.

I wished I had a magic wand to have all of her lessons be pristine and promotion free. Even PBS is running commercials and the biggest slap in the face is when you are paying money to your ISP, and they run tons of ads on your email and profile pages.

So, I’m with you on the interruptions of the lessons, but not sure what the answer is, other than understanding that it is a necessary evil of life. Maybe Marina has some words of wisdom to share on this subject.

By the way, I was looking at your site and I like the maroon cap and the aviator sunglasses. See if you and Marina can work out some discount plans. Just kidding.

    • mijj says:

I think it’s a perfectly reasonable thing to do. (cross promotional commercial)

In fact .. i think she should accept filthy lucre for this kind of activity if the opportunity arises. It’s entirely up to her. Provided she doesn’t alter word definitions to suit Pepsi Cola, then it’s fine by me. (and i say that as a devout socialist – a capitalist would be of a similar opinion, but wouldn’t object to word definitions being changed.)

I personally wasn’t taken by the POPTUB channel .. but i like the idea of being shown what’s going on out there and given the opportunity to nose around elsewhere.

M’s vids are v. nice. I watch them free of charge without any kind of obligation. .. and i don’t mind a commercial every now an’ then.

      • Capman911 says:

I know some people don’t like commercials or adds, but they pay the bills. You can’t run a site totally free, it begins to dig into the pocketbook after awhile. So you have to have some kinda compensation to help. I have even seen sites that ask for donations just to stay on the internet. I’ll look and read the adds and commercials just to help out. You might learn something new from them.

    • Bob says:

I have to agree that it is disappointing to have been served up with such an abbreviated version of Marina’s interview. It does make it appear that they were only interested in cynically profiting from her popularity.
I see that the video of the interview has now been removed from their site, so let’s hope they are having an attack of conscience and will soon post an unexpurgated version.
If not, I think Marina should put them on her black list … or maybe offer to do an interview with them and just publish the bits that suit her.

  22. slodkichsnow says:

    • pedanticKarl says:

I love your gravatar misscupcake, except it makes me hungry for one all the time. Every time I am in the grocery store and I see a cupcake, I can’t help but think of you.

So, does that mean we can now go for a walk sometime?

Loved that 21 emotions video. You had me on the floor on that surprise ending. That was way tooooo funny. Great video.

  24. hot4wordsfan says:

Hi, I hope you are doing fine and keep on the good job. you are doing great and I think you are a very interesting person. I was wondering about the word “willy”. You know, its like the nick name for the men tool. why they call it willy?

  25. misscupcake says:

you mentioned me in the interview?
i watched it twice and didnt see it. i think they cut it out :( aww hehe

i love the little quacks in this video LOL! (lmw)

    • HotForWords says:

They cut out about 90% of the interview. :-(

    • Captain Jack says:

That seems very strange. When I get interviewed they ask me about 5 or so questions and only broadcast about 3 of the best questions. More than half of the interview. I have lost count on how many times I have been interviewed. When I get interviewed they always do at least 50 to 80% of the questions or none at all. To ask many questions and only to show 10% is very strange. It tells me that either they are amateurs and have no idea what they are doing or they have some other idea up their sleeve. Like why would you waste 90% of your time? Walks like a duck, talks like a duck, flaps it wings like a bird then it must be a duck. I have yet to see all the videos they are making.

Settling youself in the unsettled geography of SOCAL, so called… in the shifting geography of the San Andreas fault . Blooming in the veritable desert of youtube & rising to a status of the brightest light in the edutainment business.
You tried to reveal your secrets to the very people who were asking you questions & they were disinterested in the very soul… the quintessence of your life’s passion… (is this, too much?)
    Do your own interview,

about my other favorite channels (I mentioned lisanova, misscupcake1, filiskun), how I got started, what’s my secret ingredient to YouTube success, my upcoming book, etc…

or sis. could ask the questions. Only she coukd know how to get to you & unravel the layers of mystery, like peeling an onion. Oh the intrigue, the revelation of your machinations, unleashed on the unsuspecting … eh, or not.

  32. GREG says:

    Marina
Isn’t time for a new BIO page yet????
May it would be a good job for your TAs to work on?
Or maybe a contest “The Best Bio Page Contest”
Let’s any one that wants to write one, Try.
Anyone else think this is a good idea post ((yes / no))
Maybe Marina will come by and think it is a good idea too.

    • pedanticKarl says:

Hi Greg, I don’t think it is wise to mess with the Bio page. That is someone’s calling card and that person knows best what will work for them. Marina seems to keep that page up to date often as I see little tweaks here and there often.

But, since you brought up the subject, I think what would be a good idea is to include testimonials, maybe below the Bio or on some other page. It would be quotes of people lauding the praises of HotForWords site in general and Marina specifically.

I think unsolicited testimonials are always great. There should be more than 200 video pages and I’m sure many if not most have some great quotable testimonial quotes. A contest of solicited testimonials might also work.

      • BillyB says:

I had a whole page response to you p’karl, i laff everytime I read your name btw, & hit the wrong key & lost it  … jist… no contest…, just throw out the troll comments & the hustler / drooler comments & have some of the comments that do reflect Marina’s impact on folks, the simpler the better, as everone that has a comment has different ways of expressing thought… unsolicited, with no thought towards rewards or a pat on the head, signed HFW cofffeee mug… etc.
Not a show of creative writing, but you know kinda heartfelt stuff, I’m not talking hormones and androgens, but brain stimulating expressions.

      • Bob says:

If you start a contest for unsolicited testimonials, aren’t your thereby soliciting for them. :???:

      • Captain Jack says:

Bob your so right. If you solicit testimonials then it waters down them as not being sincere. I’ve seen people being interview on a product that they disliked only to say the loved it on TV because people will do just about anything to get their 15 seconds of fame.

    • Captain Jack says:

Greg, the bio page is just fine. The TAs have their work cut out on other projects that are more important to Miss M at this time.

    • GREG says:

      so we have two no’s
      anyone else like a say?

      • GREG says:

        and one maybe? I think..

      • BillyB says:

yah her bio is changing, but posting every little change is not all that neccesary. Say, maybe on her birthday or on the anniversary of her graduation, with her university degrees.
Teacher @ 22, of 17 year olds… Final Exam. Couldn’t last. Only hot teacher I had in school, was in grade 5. One high school one thought she was hot… the girls liked her.
So my “maybe” vote doesn’t count for much.

      • matalexwolf says:

like your thinking Greg but leaning towards okay as it is. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it….theres that ain’t word again! My guess would be Marina has always got some new ideas bubbling away; always tweaking away at things in any case.

    • GREG says:

Well sorry guys I did not think I was stepping on hallowed ground here.
I think that the bio is dry and unfitting for such a colorful Woman.
It does not need to be updated all the time but it has been a while.
With all the talent that comes to this site and that is the best we can do?

I update my site everyday or so just because people need something new or they will stop coming by. Why read it again if nothing is ever new.
Hey ……..then do nothing, Captjack is happy with it along with some others.
I would like to see Capman , James , Bob or mijj take a whack at writing it. Even old pt9 and buzzy and not to be forgotten CHACHA!!
Something that is befitting such a world renown celebrity.
But I will not bring it up again if like Jack you
all think it is just good enough and want to leave it alone.
Am I the only one that think she deserves better??

      • BillyB says:

How often do you check her bio page?? i don’t that often, but if she is getting lots of hits on that page, she’d know… like you are aware of yours, so your idea isn’t bad… if deemed neccesary.
LOL mijj could probably do some real (surreal) imagery on a page he’d work on.

      • GREG says:

How often? NEVER because it never changes.
Her Bio is like so un-special?? Vanilla at best.
Store bought vanilla. Come on…..We can’t do any better?
I still think it would be cool if each month a new editorial
/ bio is posted. It would be another reason to visit?/?
To see Marina through some news eyes. A chance to show
off their wordsmith styles. OK so jack likes store bought vanilla
        I would like see a little flair…style…some- some’um  K

My wife playfully nudged me in the ribs ……..Smiled and said, ‘He mated 50 times last year.’

We walked to the second pen which had a sign attached that said,

”THIS BULL MATED 150 TIMES LAST YEAR’

My wife gave me a healthy jab and said, ‘WOW~~That’s more than twice a week! ……….You could learn a lot from him.’

We walked to the third pen and it had a sign attached that said,

    in capital letters,

‘THIS BULL MATED 365 TIMES LAST YEAR’

My wife was so excited that her elbow nearly broke my ribs, and said,

‘That’s once a day ..You could REALLY learn something from this one.’

I looked at her and said,

‘Go over and ask him if it was with the same old cow.’

Heavens to Betsy (and who the heck is Betsy), that YT crowd is vicious giving you two stars. I guess they just don’t get the idea of cross promotion and it looks like most of them never read the video description to the right of the video. Maybe there should be a warning before each video that says, if you haven’t read the description before watching the video, no more detention for you.

We all cross promote when some of us give opinions and links of other content we enjoy. By the way Marina, one of the things I look forward to very often is the “My Recent Ratings” panel on your You Tube profile page. I have discovered new channels that I enjoy via your ratings. I wished the panel were taller to see the ratings that I missed.

I enjoyed the DJ Rok’s Electro remix of I Kissed a Girl and many others. I also like your Favorites and Subscriptions pages as I find new channels there.

Maybe the style of PopTub may not be for everyone, but I like it’s utilitarian features of providing interviews and a review of other interesting You Tube channels.

Self promotion is important as you already know and I have a ton of respect for you Marina as you go out of your way many times to promote other sites. Continue being who you are as your efforts are being noticed. You are a five star in my book.

    Hi Marina,

I like what you do and in the format that you have been using.

I went to POPTUB and wasn’t all that impressed with Maria, the format etc. I’m “turned-off and tuned-out” with these commercialized, hype-type, talking sites. Maybe the content of the guest videos are OK… BUT… It feels like I’m watching hype TV… entertainment tonight, extra, TMZ. etc…

That said, I gotta go watch my cactus grow, sip herb tea and listen to the wind. LOL

    совершенная Marina,
Your homework assignment was to watch Pottub, then tell you what I think: Well, I watched both Pottub and Maria’s site, mariagsansone, and I think: Maria Sansone speaks with more energy, at a faster pace, and without an accent. Her hair is nice and thick, her breasts seem placed higher, she moves her body with energy. She seems to be a fun person and she’s easier to understand, since I won’t have to learn the Russian language.
Of course, I’m still loyal to you, Marina, because you told me you are a great cook, and I don’t know if Maria can make a nice cup of tea, yet. I also noticed you put new bed coverings on your bed. Did we get them messy, last night? Your dear student, seesixcm6

    • What an interesting comparative analysis.
You may have given this more thought than
it really needed, but you point of view is…
      entertaining.

      • seesixcm6 says:

It might be because I’m one of the few who does Marina’s homework every time. I hope Marina appreciates that and that I’m still loyal to Marina, even after seeing fresh, new, Maria who has thicker, longer hair, speaks my language and smiles more often! seesixcm6

    • matalexwolf says:

…..just to even think about comparing Marina to whoever  ….just not an option. How could you, just what were you thinking…sure, I do confess, there are many beautiful women that grace this planet, all unique as we all are but Marina, oh my, is certainly one of a kind. The one and only, number one GODDESS of this world, the one……the bench mark for all women, Sexy & Intelligent, clever & georgous, super fun just so scrummy. I weep at your comments, “Fresh new Maria” ……then go seesixcm6, leave us to join your fresh new class, if you seek longer hair with accent less of a challenge, watch porn i guess  ….loyal, my arse  …..no offence intended Maria, you are very, you, doing a great job of that, keep that going…..learn from Marina. OK, Capman911, I’ve read it all and smehow I didn’t reach the same conclusion. Now, you could provide tangible evidence if you would send Marina a nice bouquet of flowers every week. (In Southern California, florists have flowers throughout the year.) In her “Cologne” video, she told us which perfume is her favorite: Are you mailing her more of that perfume? Oh, and mail her jewelry, too. As they say, “diamonds are a girl’s best friend.” I’ll look forward to Marina’s video where she describes all the gifts and flowers you’ve showered upon her! You know how to treat a girl right, don’t you? seesixcm6

    • Capman911 says:

Ok. The only flowers I have sent her is by pictures of them on here. I have sent her Roses other items from here also from cakes to cupcakes you know little sweet things. I still have her ring when she wants it, but she really hasn’t committed herself yet. I have tried, but I think Kobe has taken the place in her heart over me. So I’ll have to take second place for now. And yes I do know how to treat a Lady, especially this one. So I guess we can all still flirt with her as she hasn’t made up her mind yet. Let the best person win  I am not giving up though. On the “double u” topic, I think it is interesting how the Welsh use the “W” as a long “u” sound. Like in English, we use “Y” for either an “i” or “e” sound.
For instance, “blaidd drwg” is Welsh for “bad wolf”. I don’t know… I’m kind of a Doctor Who fan. I wonder what other languages use “W” in the same manner. :?:

      • thxeleven38 says:

Well “Whovians” in the know  , know there is no Doctor Who, just “THE DOCTOR” . The current regen in the image of Dave Tennant is an impersonator  . re: 0:59 “…the original idea was to call the new channel The Tube”

Incidentally, the name “The Tube” (a TV music network) was founded by Les Garland of MTV / VH1 fame and was a subsidiary of The Tube Media founded in 2003.

In L.A., “The Tube” aired music videos 24/7 on digital channel TV 5.5 from 2003 – 2007 similar to the original MTV / VH1. The music programming was awesome and is now dead.

“You Tube” was founded in Feb 2005 and was bought by Google in 2006. Interesting coincidences?

Oh well, back to watching the Ministry of Sound.

Ted Rogers was best, three, two, one…3 cars in one, part Ford mixed with some Japanese, glued with wet paper, chewy gum accoumpanied with an ‘offical’ looking bit of paper saying it was all good! I remember the last time someone on Marina’s YouTube site said something bad about us we went over there and had one hell of a flame war with the blok. But it didn’t do any good the next day someone else said something else so we left it alone so they wouldn’t follow us back here and continue the war. M chewed our areses out for it for having flame wars on her site. So we kinda learned another lesson “verbally” from the teacher that day. So we stay calm and collective and overlook the hatred from others.

Interesting pattern on your bed spread. Hope Kobe wasn’t being artistic on his flight.

  72. wetsuit5 says:

Gizmo is the shortened form of Gizmacho.
Gizmacho is a nonsense word without meaning that is uttered during a brain fart by a worker to a helper when the worker is so strongly concentrating on a problem at hand and it’s solution that he can’t recall the specific name of the tool he needs.
Or the helper is so unfamiliar with the name of tools he wouldn’t bring the correct tool.
Usually accompanied by specific pointing at the tool desired.
As in “Hand me the Gizmacho”.
It’s akin to calling a hammer a ham banger and not a bangey thing.
It’s not macho for a man to refer to tool as ‘ey’ or ‘ee’ anything.

More info on the word Gizmo.
The following is highly speculative. If you are not into speculative thoughts, read no further.

In my other comment below, I provide sources in time where the word gizmo may have started, and until the details can be uncovered, there still is no clue as to how the word came about. The following speculations may shed some light on the origin of the word gizmo, but lots of research is needed to back up these speculations.

    1. Mis-vocalizations (butchering) of foreign phrases.
A person on a Linguist List forum speculated that gizmo may have come from butchering the honorific form of thank you in Japanese which would be “arigato gozaimasu”. This person asks the question if it was possible that the Japanese phrase became butchered to “arigato gizmo”. Further speculation on “arigato” would turn into “a rig” which would turn into “a rigged up gizmo” which eventually would point to a contraption.
    Listserv on linguistlist.org

    2. Mis heard phrases due to dialects, accents, noise, homonyms, etc.
I was in the service and have experienced lots of these types of situations. Perhaps a Marine barked an order like, “Get some more…” maybe referring to some hardware. With a dialect or accent, that might have sounded like “git sum mo” which may have been heard as “git’sm mo” which became “gizmo”?

    3. The US has a base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba which is sometimes abbreviated GTMO or Gitmo. The only way I could speculate in how the word Gitmo evolved into gizmo would be via radio operators who may have misheard Gitmo referring to a radio contraption.

    4. When using the word contraption, Rube Goldberg comes to mind. In France, a similar contraption is “usine à gaz”. Since Rube was Jewish, perhaps gizmo has a Yiddish origin and the Marines made some reference to a Rube Goldberg contraption.

    – End of Speculations –

  77. Bob says:

    Straws with you, Marina.
As a possible origin for “gizmo”, the author in this link may be clutching at straws, but it’s a fun idea anyway, and worth a look (for a giggle, if nothing else).

  78. James says:

Its nice to see you back in the bedroom Marina

  79. pedanticKarl says:

Marina, I found a very interesting paragraph regarding gizmo with enough information to start the “ball of wax rolling”. Geeez, where did that phrase come from?

From the word detective page link that Warren also supplied below, it says about gizmo:

“Gizmo” seems to have originated in the U.S. Navy during or shortly before World War II, where it was used as an all-purpose synonym for “whatchamacallit.” The postwar return of draftees to the civilian world brought the word into general usage, and postwar authors from Saul Bellow to Max Shulman popularized “gizmo” in the late 1940′s and early 1950′s.
    http://www.word-detective.com/back-a.html

    The following info goes deeper:

    Gizmo: Origin: 1942
