I consider my self to be a [libertarian] I find both [wings] to be [dis][taste][ful]. it seems that the left wing wants to take my [money] but will let me determine my own [morality], while the right wing will let me keep my [dollar]s but wants to [dictate] how I should act.

It [seem]s that there should be a better way, and I would post a link to it if our lovely host would [consent]…

  4. and now tell me :
why until the end of the war NSDAP was a left wing and after war its called right wing?

The picture you show of the National Assembly is in fact the Tennis Court Oath. The tennis court was the largest indoor area they could find to have their meeting. Of course its not the tennis you might think of today but rather the original game of tennis known as Jeu de Paumme Royale (fr), Real Tennis (uk), Royal Tennis (au) and Court Tennis (us). And the source of many great words and phrases used throughout today.

I’m definately closer to right wing (McCain/Palin ‘08!), though still close to the middle. I wouldn’t have guessed the etymology of these expressions would have been so simple as how people arranged themselves, still cool to know though.

hang on a minute .. that thing over there that says “64868 comments” (at the moment) – i never noticed that before.

is that the total number of comments made in all the threads in this site? – i guess that’s what it means.

getting close to my 74,000+ thread comment record!!

my estimate the other day was something like 55,000, i think .. wya too low.

  20. Hello Marina. Good news!!
My request for getting 3 of your video unflagged worked.

I made a list of flagged videos and requested that 3 of them be unflagged. The ones I did not request to be unflagged are still flagged, incl. the Antidisestablishmentarianism video.

Now that I know that YT honors unflagging requests, I will be my honor to get the rest of your videos unflagged.

  22. chaospgs says: 198

Hi Marina this is my first request, love the site and the channel, so recently you did the word Loon, well I would like to know the origin of the word Looner, I see many people using it on utube videos etc and am curious as to what this means, I’m sure you will do it justice in your usual way.

    Thanks

    chaospgs

  23. mijj says: 197

why is it that Marina can discuss the meanings and origins of perfectly valid (in the context of linguistics) words and phrases such as cock, vagina, muff diving, clitoris, fellatio, etc .. and we all accept this as perfectly reasonable. (which it is, of course.)

… but as soon as her students are presented with the Dominatrix Test in order to test our comprehension in a meaningful way, we get all flustered and frothy headed.

Surely, words aren’t just dusty old things with definitions to be recited and derivations to be discussed. Surely words are living vibrant things that have meaning and significance in the real organic world. And that includes the taboo words that Marina can examine but seems get us flustered.

does this mean that Marina’s students aren’t really paying attention to their lessons? Does this mean we’re really not interested in what M has to say about these words .. is it that we just like hearing a beautiful woman talk dirty?

below is the test .. maybe someone can comment.
    —————————————————————

You are completing this test on behalf of the version of Marina presented in her Videos.
This will help to evaluate Video Marina’s screen character and presence.

[The Could You Be A Good Dominatrix Test]

    • It’s the mental gender transition plus fringe lifestyle thade made the hurdle unsurmountable for me  Reminds me of [THIS]

      • there, I did it:

Your result for The Could You Be A Good Dominatrix Test …

        Woman on Top
You scored 55% Dominance and 53% Technique!

You enjoy being in charge and it shows. You know just what to do to have your partner at your beck and call. And if he should become unavailable, no doubt there are men lined up to do your bidding. Hell, I’m getting interested just typing this.

Whatever you do, don’t change a thing. And give me a shout if you ever want to, um, discuss things. :-)

        • mijj says: 197.1.1.1

just needs a small tweak to be appropriate for the test context :
i.e. you were completing it on behalf of Marina.

          therefore:

          Woman on Top
Marina scored 55% Dominance and 53% Technique!

Marina enjoys being in charge and it shows. She knows just what to do to have her student at her beck and call. And if he should become unavailable, no doubt there are other students lined up to do her bidding.

      • Thanks…I meant to edit it, but forgot until .ooo1 seconds after pushing the ’send’ button :???:

      • mijj says: 197.1.3

i actually think this is useful research material for Marina. She can use the results of the tests to determine the imagined type of character her perverted students might prefer her to represent. … and then, of course, she’d portray the opposite type, because that’s what cruel Marina would do.

    • Remember a prior discussion of body type preferences? Here’s another cutie that trips my trigger. (the brunette…I’m not into talons and sharp beaks…)

    • A simple reason could be this:
The words you give as an example above have
anatomical and biological meaning, and some
are inherently humorous by their corrupted use.
The whole dominatrix thing is purely sexual and
this test tries to personalise it to the individual
taking the test. Since the questions are about
a deviant sexual nature, as compared to a test
about whether you are a virgin or a sexually
aroused human animal, it is found that one
is more insulted than amused by the types of
questions asked. Slave auctions and naked
house boys are not appealing to my tastes
at all. This test lambasts you with a series
of these questions, leaving no opportunity
to answer in a way which rejects the behaviors
suggested. One example of this type of Q&A
asks the question: “Have you stopped beating
your wife?”. If you have never beat your wife,
there is no truthful answer you can give. It
attempts to pigeon hole you as a wife beater!

      Word request: stunned
as in = Leaders in Congress were stunned
when their piece-of -sh*t legislation was rejected.
(Guess I have to quit reading the news, again)

      • Heck, *I* even *ASKED HIM* to post it…. thought it would be campy fun, but heck, I never even venture into the deep end of my sandbox, let alone some of the places that quiz took me. Welcome to HFW, this morning, ChaCha!

      • mijj says: 197.3.2

“whole dominatrix thing is purely sexuall”
        -
well .. that’s your personal feeling .. i feel the dominatrix thing has an underlying foundation of humour.

“the questions are about a deviant sexual nature”
        -
at no point are you required to indicate an indulgence in what you’d think of as deviant sexual behavior. All the sex in there is standard stuff.. but just in a dominatrix context.

“This test lambasts you with a series of these questions, leaving no opportunity to answer in a way which rejects the behaviors suggested.”
        -
given that the test is for the Dominatrix Style .. then the questions will be of that nature.
        -
it’s like criticizing a quiz testing your fighting style for being about aggression.

      • Gotta go, fellas, Thx, mijj, had a great time here in the time-warp chat!

  24. Eh, I know it’s all cliché and everything, but I consider myself more moderate than anything else.

Also, I’m interested in the word “ameliorate.”

That is, I’m interested in seeing a beautiful woman tell me where it comes from, that is.

  25. cekc says: 195

Origins of the word “diet” please.

  26. Well, after reading all the many exchanges between members and the TAs doing their job, this site is very entertaining. I have learned many new words and seen some pretty strange opinions. But, it has stayed within the boundaries of polite which is refreshing to say the least. So, kudos to all below my comment for you all are doing a good job and being respectful to each other. I see some tense exchanges but the comments end on a postive or compromising note which is helpful and does not contribute to an escalating conflict. I am a new member as some have commented and will be around for as long as the good Lord will allow me. Hello everyone from the last frontier or my state of Alaska. I look forward to talking to all of you. My word for the day is TRILLION which I will not expand onto since today was a historic day. Have a good week everyone. NakedBullwinkle

    • “…for as long as the good Lord will let me”

Hmm.. observation: We count our birthdays.
Queries: Why would we do this? Is it some sort of contest to see who can live the longest? If the afterlife (heaven) is so much better, why haven’t we all chosen to drink the Kool-aid? If a contest, might there be soon a means to guarantee a win?

Have fun with this one, I hope!

      • Perhaps a word request for Halloween: Mortality

      • I have read it a couple of times and have no idea what you are saying. You focused on being so clever in your comments that any point you were trying to make seems to be lost or only known by you. So, if you could translate for me since english in my only language, I may be able to retort. You could get in your car tomorrow and drive through a green light and be killed in an instant. I had an experience very similiar to that situation and realize how quickly life can turn in literally one second. I made the right decision and able to write this this annoying response to you. So, when I say when the word Lord and suggest limited time, I am saying that I do possess an immortal soul and it could be snatched away very quickly to the other side or the after life or heaven which I want to be some day. And, I never drank kool aid as a kid and knew better for it tasted like crap until you dumped a crap load of sugar and then tasted like sweet crap. So, I do not drink kool aid as a child and have no interest in anyone suggesting I may be drinking kool aid today if it is referencing my I belief in God, Jesus, and heaven. If that offends anyone, I do not care. It is really just that simple. So, back to you in the studio…. :???:

      • Drink the Kool-aid was a reference to a previous video (click the blue words to see it). I am not taking exception to your religious views, in fact would have to say that we almost agree on the existence of a supreme deity, which point I will not debate. Click the blue words in my initial post for a gentlman from Oxford who suggests the possibility of eliminating aging as a cause of death. Further, I agree 100% that even barring trauma, since the gentleman’s ideas have yet to come to fruition, I may even collapse with a heart attack before I even get to read your reply to this post.

      • I probably should have opened this one on a new thread. For clarity, the topic I wish to discuss is the possibulity of eliminating aging as a cause of death.

OBAMA 08! By the way Marina, who won in the Love Letter contest a while back?

    • Yep poor old USA, Ide say they got about 7 years to get there shit of his moon, but I Am just the messenger.

      • At the rate the Dow power-dove yesterday, with inaction, I think we’re probably more on the time scale of days and weeks before catastrophic collapse of the entire US economy. Were I president, I would have imposed martial law on the congress. Not to force them to pass that particular draft of the bill into law, but to pass SOMETHING. “We don’t like this, therefore we shall do nothing” is the option I would prohibit. I would enforce the sole option to congress of not leaving until they say what they WILL pass.

      • I thought I made a reply to this yesterday but it appears to be gone. I suppose you missunderstood, I am talking about a real time physcial effort to remove there shit off his Moon( GOD’S Moon) they have screwed up a delicate balance in the very nature of the of the makeup of the function of this part of the solar system. He says fixit or its start over time before long. I am not interested in elections, I am not interested in economics, I am not interested in starting any companys, I am interested in the USA repairing something they want but can’t have. But as I have stated above I am just the messenger. stated above.

      • God sets up governments for his own purposes he can and will and has took them down and destroyed them for his own purposes. But as I have stated above I am just the messenger

    • mijj says: 192.2

if you want to really fix it, you gotta break first .. else you’re just patching up a broken down model that’ll get you further into the shit later.

    • mijj says: 192.3

well . i’m really going for the drama of it all .. i want to see it crash and burn .. and i want ot see all those entrenched structures destroyed.

.. i guess my attitude is, the structures are so embedded that we cant conceive of any real alterntive until it’s all gone.

      so .. destroy it all!!

    • mijj says: 192.4

i have to admit .. in the event of economic structural destruction, i’d probably be in the first tranche of people to suffer. but we all have to go sometime, and it might as well be in an interesting context.

  34. Bread is bad for you!

    1. More than 98 percent of convicted felons are bread users.
    2. Fully HALF of all children who grow up in bread-consuming households score below average on standardized tests.
    3. In the 18th century, when virtually all bread was baked in the home, the average life expectancy was less than 50 years; infant mortality rates were unacceptably high; many women died in childbirth; and diseases such as typhoid, yellow fever, and influenza ravaged whole nations.
    4. More than 90 percent of violent crimes are committed within 24 hours of eating bread.
    5. Bread is made from a substance called “dough.” It has been proven that as little as one pound of dough can be used to suffocate a mouse. The average North American eats more bread than that in one month!
    6. Primitive tribal societies that have no bread exhibit a low incidence of cancer, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease, and osteoporosis.
    7. Bread has been proven to be addictive. Subjects deprived of bread and given only water to eat begged for bread after as little as two days.
    8. Bread is often a “gateway” food item, leading the user to “harder” items such as butter, jelly, peanut butter, and even cold cuts.
    9. Bread has been proven to absorb water. Since the human body is more than 90 percent water, it follows that eating bread could lead to your body being taken over by this absorptive food product, turning you into a soggy, gooey bread-pudding person.
    10. Newborn babies can choke on bread.
    11. Bread is baked at temperatures as high as 240 degrees Celsius! That kind of heat can kill an adult in less than one minute.
    12. Most bread eaters are utterly unable to distinguish between significant scientific fact and meaningless statistical babbling.
In light of these frightening statistics, we propose the following bread restrictions:
    1. No sale of bread to minors
    2. A nationwide “Just Say No To Toast” campaign, complete celebrity TV spots and bumper stickers.
    3. A 300 percent federal tax on all bread to pay for all the societal ills we might associate with bread.
    4. No animal or human images, nor any primary colors (which may appeal to children) may be used to promote bread usage.
    5. The establishment of “bread-free” zones around schools.

        2nd time: engineering {.. pah! ..}

        ha ! ..

engineering is creation .. science is analysis.

engineering creativity is the essential impulse and direction, science is a tool used to clear the path.

there is a glamor and purity to science, engineering is hard nosed and dirty. Therein lies the confusion. The spark of creativity is rooted in the dirty reality of engineering .. the otherworldly clinical scientific analysis follows as identified by the engineering requirements.

the guy confuses the relative status of scientists and engineers in society with the elemental significance of their fields.

      • I think what he was driving at was that a Scientist is the guy that makes the discovery of the thing,

An engineer would design and enhance the first application of the thing – invention,

and a technician would be the one that uses the production model.

as for the klein bottle, I think he’s just having fun, and trying to make a few bucks with the enterprise.

This means there will never be another video ever again.

Hi, just found out about your site and have enjoyed looking at your videos and information here….thanks! I’d like to request some history on the word “whippersnapper” when you have time. Years ago, a librarian attempted to look it up for us and could only find a vague reference in early 1900’s Enlish literature, but no firm origin or definition of the word. Can you scrounge up the truth?

DOES MARINA ENCOURAGE COMMENTS ON REQUESTED WORDS? Since this seems to be an ongoing polemic, I’m sure we would all like to put this matter to rest. Because I was getting a lot of flack when I began commenting on requests, and even TA Mike asked me to refrain from this, I told him that I’d agree provided Marina felt the same way. Capt. Jack then commented on the confusion that can result when even a TA attempts to speak for Marina: He stated, “I do agree about the conflict that could arise from what a TA interprets what Marina’s will is.” He then e-mailed her on my behalf and reported back to me, saying, “Marina does encourage comments on requested words.” :!: He added, “Marina also said she would like to keep this site as organic and freewheeling as possible.” :!:

Look, I fully understand the psychology that develops when a cadre of “old timers” develops on a site. A sense of ownership naturally occurs, part of which is the tendency to dictate to newcomers what they deem acceptable and taboo. In short, they presume to speak for Marina. If ballsy newcomers like yours truly don’t come along now and then and shake up such entrenched behavior, the site ceases to be “as organic and freewheeling as possible.”

On the other hand, this does not mean that we should act completely without inhibition or common courtesy. For example, in basically anonymous forums such as this, some feel justified in “letting it all hang out,” speaking in ways they would never resort to were they sitting in a room filled with men, women, adults, and teens. As is my personal and professional nature, I initially went with the flow and took off the gloves when an adversary did the same. Now that I’m making my point, I assure you this will not happen again. Meanwhile, I’m hardly a pedantic prude; a discussion about profane or vulgar words is one thing, but their gratuitous use here does not reflect well on Marina. Also, I love humor — but not if it’s cruel and at someone else’s expense.

OF COURSE Marina encourages us to contribute to word requests; what dedicated teacher does not take delight in seeing her students helping one another and learning to do research for themselves? Capt. Jack tells me that Marina’s list of requested words has now grown to around two million! With this present inventory alone, she could do several videos a week for the rest of her life and not even scratch the surface of the requests she already has. Cap assures me that no request is ignored, but he missed my point on this. He meant that all requests are considered; but, if someone makes a request and never receives a reply, from their point of view it is ignored.

I have no intention or desire to take over the site or force Marina into exile. As the saying goes, “My Mama didn’t raise me to be no fool.” She could make videos of herself reading the back of a box of Corn Flakes and most of us would still be here, panting for more; but I love the language as much as she does, and I want to help keep her from becoming further swamped by taking on some of the more mundane requests; and, the more we do the same, the more those who make requests will not go away empty-handed. Earlier, I made a request of my own, curious about why we call Deutschland “Germany”; and, to my delight, pedantickarl did a lot of research on his own and gave me a detailed explanation. How proud Marina must be about this sort of extra-credit student homework!

If I’ve gone wrong anywhere here, I hope Marina herself will set me straight. Meanwhile, all I ask is that everyone please honor her wishes and remember that she encourages our participation in word requests and she wants to keep this site as organic and freewheeling as possible. That’s it; your turn. Thanks for your time and thoughtful consideration.

      not an easy question.
“deutsch” (”german”) comes from lat. “theodiscus”. “theodiscus” is a word “invented” by scholars to distinguish latin from, and refer to, the language that the “ordinary” people spoke. it comes from germanic ” *theod-” (”folk”, “people”) + “-isk(a)”. “-isk” is a suffix that “makes” adjectives. so, “theodisk” actually means “folkish”. but, it referred only to the langauge. old high german (about 700 — 1100 ad) knows the word “diutisk” or “diutisc”. that changed over time to “deutsch”.
as for “germany”. I’m not sure. only thing I recall is that it comes from latin “germanus”. “germanus” should be older than “theodiscus”.
as for “france”, I can only guess. a germanic tribe, the franks, settled in an area around what today is toulouse. they replaced the wisigoths who then went further west and settled in a region which is now spain. so, “france” maybe comes from the franks.
right next to franks, to the east, settled another tribe. the allemanni. so, the franks and the alemanni were neighbours. maybe this is where “allemagne” comes from.

      • Hm ! Toulouse ? No ! The capital of the Franks was Soissons not very far from Chantilly (you know the Crème Chantilly ?)
Toulouse is to Soissons the same as Dallas for Boston in the US.
        Welcome to France !

      • drshi says: 153.1.2

Wow, thanx, aLx! Both you and Karl have definitely linked the two names; but have you found any indication that the Germans themselves use the words “German” or “Germany” with reference to their country or language?

I also feel your additional info on France opens a cornucopia that Marina could harvest fruitfully: How various countries got their names and why our names for them often differ from their present official name

    • My God ! Your text was as long as War and Peace “Voina i Mir” written by Tolstoi “the fat”.

    • Bob says: 153.3

The reason there seems to be confusion on this issue is that some of us “old-timers” remember Marina herself posting just such an admonition about not answering word requests, as it spoils her opportunity to make a video about that word.
I can remember her doing so on at least two occasions. Maybe her attitude has changed in the meantime as her list of word requests has grown, so I think it would be helpful to have a definitive statement of policy from Marina.
I would also like to suggest that there should be a new “landing page” for visitors arriving at the site, on which is to be found a brief summary of how the site works, to check the past lessons page before making word requests, to avoid flaming, spamming and reacting to spammers and flamers, and any other things which Marina and the TAs think necessary to keep this a pleasant place to visit. I’m not thinking of a long list of rules here, but I cannot believe that organic and free-wheeling is synonymous with anarchy.

      • drshi says: 153.3.1

Well, Bob, regarding Marina’s policy on requests, I feel we already have a definitive statement from her in this regard: “Marina does encourage comments on requested words.” Seems clear as it can be; but, as I said in my post, if I’m wrong about anything, I trust she will set me and us straight. I also assume we’ll hear from Capt. Jack on this, as well.

I like your idea about an orientation page for newbies. Free-wheeling does suggest anarchy, but we must remember that Russians are far more “discreet” behavior-wise than we are. They are strictly purists regarding their language and the sloppy use thereof, so Marina’s use of these terms undoubtedly falls well short of anarchy.

    • Ok first off I want to correct some of facts.
“He then e-mailed her on my behalf and reported back to me, saying, “Marina does encourage comments on requested words.” :!: He added, “Marina also said she would like to keep this site as organic and freewheeling as possible.” :!:
No I did not email her on your behalf. These were comments of old emails Marina had sent to me on a different subject. I know you haven’t read all the comments on previous lessons but she has stated a bit how she would like to see the site flow.
About what I meant in regards of replying to word requests is like Bob pointed out is that it does spoil her opportunity to make a video on that word or phrase. What she was suggesting is that we start a discussion about the word request. She also wants us to guess what the origin of a word or what we heard on the street as the common etymology of that word. Sure anyone of us can go and get access to the OED and many other books and answer all the requests. That’s easy. But I ask you what fun is that? I too did as you did and tried to answer all the requests. Now I just leave most of them be, which I find it very hard to leave a question unanswered. I do chime in for any words with nautical origins. I even have the sources to back up my claims. But even so Marina has found words with deep nautical origins that I could not find. “BJ” word is one example. None of my books listed it. So Im very cautious when I reply to a word request.

As for Marina’s word list. Yes she will never get though it all. Thats not the goal here. I see this site as a place to learn a bit about the stories behind the etymology of some of these words. Nice to see a video with pictures on the subject and a very pretty philologist teaching me the back story. Marina vs reading the OED, I would pick Marina any day.

As for a policy page or a newbie page. I don’t think it’s going to happen. It would have been up years ago if this was a concern to Marina. It has been suggested many times before. I think thats what Marina was talking about free flowing and organic. No putting people in a box and giving them big rules to follow, just a few guide lines.

I hope my comment makes sense and I hope I didn’t offend you in any way. Im just trying to give you an idea how things are presently working around here. What I mean about presently is that things change here often. This site is very organic and everything I said could all change in one day. Its however Miss M see fit.
I welcome your input in all this. I also look forward to your future comments here on the HFW site. I think I can learn a lot from you.

      • Nice job Captain and thanks for your comments earlier. I am a avid kayaker and am trying to get more salt in my blood each day (paddling that is). And, here is Alaska, kayaking is a dream come true. Anyone who loves the sea, is all right by me. Have a great week, sir!!!!

        • I too like Kayaking. I have an inflatable that isn’t too horrible. I plan to get one of those framed inflatables. I really want a nice wooden kayak. I met the guys from Redfish a few weeks ago and I love their stuff. Might have to just get one and buy a bigger sailboat to put it on. What I love about kayaking is it brings you right up with nature, naked so to speak.

      • drshi says: 153.4.2

        Hi, Jack –
Thanks for your feedback: Here’s mine.
The exchange to which I refer occurred as follows (and you can check it out yourself:
        1. Mike asked me to stop commenting on word requests.
        2. I asked him to check with Marina for me on this.
        3. His macho response was, “You got it pal. I’ll e-mail her right now.”
        4. I never heard from him again, so when you responded in the same thread, I naturally assumed it was a result of the e-mail he had promised to send her on my behalf. Since you now say this was not so, why have I never heard about Marina’s response to the e-mail he supposedly sent her on my behalf?

What has happened, though, is that he has launched a rather paranoidal diatribe against me (see near the bottom on this page) in which fianchetto1 played my advocate, to which Capman911 replied, “So your saying Jack and I should just sit back and let the good doctor take over the site. If you will go back to the last couple of videos he has answered most of the word requests….” His bogus assertion paints me as vacuuming up requests like a Hoover from Hell. You also imply that I tend to answer most requests, while you “tend to let most of them be.” FYI, Jack, I do exactly the same as you. I also feel that whatever info I impart regarding words can never interfere with the kind of back stories Marina’s research provides. I assure you that I, too, am very cautious when I reply to a word request, and I’ve answered less and less since I first joined up.

Finally, surely you must admit that your statement, “Marina does encourage comments on requested words” clearly implies that she wants us to comment on the words requested and not on how we should relate to word requests in general. If the latter was indeed her intention, then I assume you can direct me to the thread that was subsequently opened inviting input on this subject. My guess is that there isn’t one; and, were there to be one, it would only open Pandora’s Box and create bad blood the likes of which both Marina and you surely want to avoid. I’d be very surprised if any of us wants to engage in a partisan battle on this or any other subject. What we want is to know quite clearly what Marina wants us to do; so now I agree with Bob’s confusion about her past injunctions against us answering word requests, and what’s needed now is a clear and unequivocal pronouncement from her that will clear up this matter once and for all.

All tolled, and though I’m certain it is not your intention, I’m afraid your comments here have thrown the whole issue right back into the Dark Waters of Nebulousness. Meanwhile, rest assured that I feel no animosity whatsoever toward you for any of your comments; you’re a peach of a chap, fuzz and all!

      • Neither offense intended nor taken, drshi, but I am almost as new here as you, and, as such, the quintessential “Low man on the totem pole”. To be specific, the part that’s about 2m underground.

So, FWIW, while I do post here liberally and freely, I am yet to be a “made man” here by a longshot. In other words, you invoke my name at your own risk.

I think both sides make valid points, though not to be mutually exclusive, to wit:

1> I percieve you, drshi to be gregarious, and perhaps a bit overzealous, but so what?? You have neither prevented Marina from doing her thing, nor exceeded your god-given right to post here as you please.

2> I percieve the current staff as perhaps a bit overzealous in remanding the doctor for exercising his constitutional right to free speech.

I reccommend that both sides chill for a bit. Perhaps drshi could cut back a bit, and perhaps we could all be a bit more tolerant of the newbie. Maybe talk to him as the Captain has, with an approach of “Welcome friend, I see you’re new here, so let me help gently tie you up and show you the ropes of being knotty here at HFW” rather than the “DANGER Will Robinson! ALIEN PRESENCE DETECTED!!!” angle that seems to have been thoroughly achieved.

        {raise your hand if you remember my reference to “Lost in Space”}

I am also fianchetto1 on YouTube. Post here (maybe I’ll see it and reply) or email me there (I will see it, and shall reply). Praise me if I’m right, dress me down if I am wrong. But in the meantime, insert tongue firmly in cheek, check out the ‘Starbucks’ link I posted up there (^^^) somewhere and let’s all have a riotous laugh at ourselves first!

        Ciao,
        Fianchetto

      • I love kayaking and doing it in Alaska. If you ever come here, you have to visit Homer, Alaska. I did some great expedtions this year and send you some great pics if you are interested. I have a sixteen foot perception sea kayak and is a real work horse for handling in rough seas and able to haul a lot of gear. I have long legs and recommend this boat for a beginner. I bought it three years ago and is still a great kayak although I am a good intermediate. I would consider my self advance if I could roll a kayak which I cannot do. But, I can do braces, low and high, on both sides and do a lot of edging and extended paddle techniques. We take classes over the winter at some local high school pools where we can work on rescues over just being suspended for extended time while upside down in the cockpit. My trip to Shoup Bay where Shoup glacier is located was the best. It was ten miles from Valdez and had a cabin we could rent that had window staring right at the glacier half a mile away. We could hear the glacier cavetate a couple of times which was awesome. I moved here eight years ago and never looked back. I wish winters went by as fast as the summers but it is not a perfect world. And, the japanese current warms anchorage more than you would think so it is not as cold as you hear and we do not have the six months of darkness that you hear about too. And, we do not have igloos but we are very independent. Lately, there has been much criticism about alaska and alaskans and I have been offended many times by what I hear. Since I live here and know the truth from the stereo types, I suspect if anyone critical of this state or its people would be eating a lot of crow or moose after coming here. And, contrary to popular opinion, I cannot go to carls jr, mcdonalds, wendy’s arbys, Burger King, or Taco Bell and find any meat that starts with names like moose, reindeer, Polar bear, Grizzly Bear, Elk, or Black Bear. What you will find is a large variety of,,,drum roll please, COW!!! Go figure!!! Anyway, thanks for the shout back and enjoyed talking to you and share some kayak info or experiences if you can. My latest one was paddling along a lake shore next to some tall grass and had a moose stick his head out over the water. Since I am only about three feet tall from the water and adjacent to the shore, he almost knocked my out of the boat. He heard something, me, and wanted to see what it was and if he waited one more second, my ass would have been tipped for sure. He was about ten feet in front of me and turn his head right at me. It was a thrill and did a quick paddle sweep to avoid some serious tongue action with a moose  So, shout back and keep up the good work, Captain :!:

    • 1. I think he meant not to answer every word request that comes across HFW site. Now you know about how Marina operates, I seen you have been putting more thought into when to respond. Thats great.
      2. He did. I got a copy of his email about this. As far as I know there was no answer to his email at this time. Marina is super busy now days. She is swamped. Have you heard about her new book deal? If you knew what she gets done in a day your jaw would drop. And she does this 7 days a week. She is in need of a vacation.
      3. Mike was just trying to be friendly. Some of us try to treat everyone as a life long buddy even if they are new. Mike started out as our door greeter. Everyone is his buddy as long as you don’t piss him off. ;-) I sure it was just a misunderstanding.
      4. Never assume anything. That’s what helps starts wars in other countries. Good, continued communications in time answers all questions and we don’t have to assume anything.

I had commissioned fianchetto1 to reply to all word requests to add the key search word “Request” to the comments so we can find all word/phrase/origin requests. Marina later told me that this was no longer needed for she has a much better system now in place to handle requests.

Yea what your doing now is great. Minimizing replies. But if you are sure that Marina doesn’t have a back story on the word then go for it and answer the request. Oh and if you see anyone ask for the word F#©|< then refer them to James’s video. He has that word all wrapped up for it gets asked a lot. I myself should reframe from answering even some Nautical requests. I have in the past answered a reply to tell the person that the word has an interesting origin and I will let Marina try to answer the request. If they really need to know they can always email me.

Comment yes but not answer them with Google or Wiki. She frowns on that. I did just that when I first started. Wow was I put in my place. heheheh. There is no thread on this site about using Wiki but if you watch some of here old game videos she says not to use wiki or google. She just wants us to give her our best guess. Like I said before we have source to answer all the questions. But then whats the point of asking the question? What I find interesting is all the myths Marina she busts. She should be on Mythbusters!!!

Thats really the best I can answer the questions you ask. If I have failed to satisfy answering your questions then Yes its up to Marina to directly answer those for you. She is very busy and she usually get to questions of this sort. Just be prepared to wait awhile. Even I being a TA don’t get answers for weeks later. Thats fine with me. I don’t want to be the blame of her not making a new lesson. You know it typically takes about 8 hours for her to do the research, filming, posting her lessons, and all this is on her second language. She is able to make me look ignorant of my own native language.

Warm and fuzzes to you to! I hope I was able to clear some of the air.

    • Cornflakes? They’re Great!
With all the politicians playing “gotcha” games,
you would hope we could somehow learn to be
bigger than that, without requiring Marina to wear
a black leather something-something, get out her
big stick and smack on us! Oh the Humanity!
Would you believe that some folks come here
just to “stir the pot”? Well, it happens…mox nix.
After reading the sequential detailing of your posts
above, I gotta ask – what are your intentions?
Here’s a thought, just my opinion – let this one go.
No sense in making mountains out of molehills
