    Myeah :) )

  8. I was lying in bed this morning, not having to get up early for any particular reason, and the sunlight was streaming in the window from a cool, breezy fall California sky. Then my fantasy came to me: the sunlight falls on Marina’s hair; the golden falling on the gold. (If you’re going to have a fantasy, it might as well be a good one.)

  9. hutchiee says:

Marina with either the classic or modern interpretation, you are indeed fantastic.

    Hi Marina

Love you and your appearances on O’Reilly’s show. I have found myself interested in words now because of you. I would like to know the origin of the word mafflard and what it means. Thanks.

  20. eblezze says:

hey marina… u just getting better n hotter everyday… hehe… i just want to ask u if fantastic was used for some ‘fantasy’ or ‘imaginary’ related thing before, how bout the word fabulous? where is it really comes from? thanx marina… u r always been the best teacher… XOXO ;)

  21. bramallblade says:

I would like to request the word the word ‘kerfuffle’ please. (2)

With regard to ‘fantastic’ i see that the meaning has changed from an orginal meaning of being in a negative sense to one that is positive. Just like ‘wicked’ has changed over the last 20 years or so.

  22. Ya.. Actually i have a bundle of words whose origins are unknown to me.
I like to ask on of them right now but ill be commenting some other day a big list. Lets c if u make a vidz covering all those words or a different vidz for each of them.

Ok plz can u find me the meaning of  ‘prophylactic’
It means used to prevent disease but the only disease related root i know is ‘pathos’ and i dont seem t find it in this word.

  26. dragonrulez says:

Marina what does the word enlargement means ?

  27. Hitman says:

Actually, I have a doubt about the origin of Phantom, it si related to fantasy and sound similar.Ands as an example the translation to the Spanish “fantasma” (Phantom) and “fantasia” (Fantasy) so both come from the latin but something had happen to Phantom.. i think

  28. mijj says:

    my most outrageous fantasy is: i give Marina a butterfly kiss on the cheek. {… where i’d flutter my eyelashes against her cheek … my first love of my life showed me this.}

  31. mijj says:

    Gorgeous long trail of definitions!

fantastique – existing only in imagination

    phantasticus – imaginary

    phantastikos – able to imagine

    phantazein – make visible

phantazesthai – to imagine / have visions

    —————
but does a fantasy really have to be out of bounds of reality?
Couldn’t something be a fantasy in a way that you might imagine something that may possibly be?
It’s existence in imagination may only be temporary.

    • Capman911 says:

I think so Mijj. Say you like a woman at work and she doesn’t know you exist because you two have never talked or met, you have just seen her from afar. But your fantasy is to meet and date her. One day in an elevator it’s you and her and one of you breaks the ice and speaks. You find out you have so much in common. You ask her out and she excepts. You start a relationship and your fantasy is fulfilled. I don’t think a fantasy has to be something that’s only going to be imaginary. It can turn out to be real.

Of course you can always pick up Kobe, click your Christian Louboutin red bottomed shoes together three times and say “There is no place like Melrose”. Whoooosh …. your flying!

Be careful of what you wish for and watch out for Harpies when you are flying around.

    Hi Marina,

My Grandma used to have fantastic FARTS right at the dinner table. She was deaf. My brother and I would smile and give her a thumbs up. When she told my Mom she was coming over, we’d cook beans and let Mom know, “Grandma is fantastic!”

    Word origin of FART? hmmm?

  99. kissmyk4ss says:

    Marina,

I was wondering the origins of the word “ginormous” and if it’s even a word in the english dictionary. Thanks so much.

    kissmyK4SS

    • This is a portemaneau word combining the
words “gigantic” and “enormous”. I doubt
this one’s in the Dictionary, per se.
Marina gave a lesson about portemaneau
      words during the Machinima video.
At one point, Marina says “I think I’m hot”
(James needs to ferret out lines like these
for his next video – heh heh!)

  100. basdhaweio says:

    Hmm…a fantasy…like a ridiculously hot school teacher?

How about the word pupil? Both a student and part of the eye? Odd link, but is it purely coincidental? Saw some startling blue eyes at the top of the screen and started wondering

  101. wetsuit5 says:

    Marina,

My fantasy involves long deep kisses and caressing embraces.
    But enough of that.

Your fantasy isn’t so far fetched to be beyond the realm of possibility.
Here’s some ways to accomplish it.

Sky Diving. But that could be too risky for the fun.
Tandem Sky Diving. Still could be too risky for the fun.
Besides you’d have to jump out of a perfectly good airplane.
Sky Diving Training Houses. (I saw one in Orlando) You wear a baggy sky diving jumpsuit and do a “Free Fall” dive for several minutes over a controlled jet of air. Great fun without the risk.

But you have the nick name of “Mermaid” so there’s another option you might enjoy more.
SCUBA Diving. Not overly risky. Your entirely weightless. You can swim (fly) up, you can swim (fly) down, or you can swim (fly) in any direction you want. And when you going along with the current (Drift Diving, floating stationary with the current) it’s just like flying like Superman. Even more so when it’s high current swift water.

Or you might want to consult Kobe. I hear he has some experience zooming.

    • I’ve heard only fools and bird crap fall
from the skies! Ever try tumbling on a
trampoline? If you do it unsafely, you can
simulate how it feels to be bird crap – LOL!
If you do it right, getting air, you can have
      moments of weightless feeling without
having to jump out of a perfectly good
      airplane.

    • orion_ss1 says:

EVERYTHING in life has risks. If you cross the street a car could hit you. If you drive in a car a truck could crush you. If you stay home a meteor could fall out of the sky and crush you. Paradoxically you must both live as if today is the last day AND as if you’ll live to be a hundred. If you live too safely you’ll have regrets of missed experiences; if you live too recklessly – well, you get the idea.

Enjoy life as best you can without raining on anyone else’s parade ( or else they may return the favor ).

hi i want to know what means the word ”word” :???:

    • WORD is certainly connected to the Indoeuropean root *UER-D meaning “turn and torsion”. When you utter a word, you twist your mouth. On the other hand a word is the torsion of the tongue too.
In Latin VERBUM is certainly the same root *UER-B where B is a variable suffixe like -D in UER-D.

  114. seesixcm6 says:

Dear совершенная Marina, How nice that you took a moment to read a definition from the O.E.D. You may do this as often as you like. For your homework, my fantasy using the original definition would be to sleep safe and warm in your close embrace through a long winter’s night. Supergirl is also someone who flies like Superman. For some reason, she never grows up into Superwoman. Fantasy is also a genre of fiction that goes back to the Epic of Gilgamesh, the legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, to modern ones like Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, or even Pirates of the Caribbean. They are nice movies. Oh, if you get frightened at movies like that, I’d like to sit next to you and hold you to make you feel better. Your dear student, seesixcm6

  115. shane says:

All of my fantasies involve my teacher!… but that’s pretty normal, right?

I have a couple of word requests too:

    1) With the baseball playoffs, I’m wondering why the term ‘bullpen’ started to be use for where the pitchers warm up.

    2) I’m curious about why we change the name of some dried fruits. For example, why is a dried grape called a raisin? Why is a dried plum called a prune? But a dried apple is just a dried apple, and a dried mango is just a dried mango. Where did raisin and prune come from, and why are they different?

    3) Cat Bird Seat. I have heard many older people use this term to describe someone who is in first place, or in perfect position to negotiate or win something. Such as the pole position in a car race, or having all the leverage in a negotiation. Where does this term come from? What is a Cat Bird seat?

    Thank you Marina!

  116. GREG says:

It seem that people are always looking
for a new way to express ” A good thing ”
    Hot
    Tight
    Neat
    Cool
    Banging
    Bad
    Off the hook
    On and on into noisome
Fantanic now means the opposite of fanciful.

  117. ingarrecibo says:

Hi Marina! I really liked and enjoyed your channel… I also like the philology and etimology… but in my native language (Spanish). Nevertheless I also like to learn some words in English that are some kind related to Latin forms or just curious  .
    Those are my words:
    “Address”
    “Explode”
    “Crab”
    Shalom,
    Andres G.

  118. In all honesty my fantasy is to take over the World and rule as Rex Mundi.

An even bigger fantasy of mine I’m going to keep secret like a birthday wish.

Because really I don’t want to be a self centered king of the world. I rather want to be a lover, like in that song by Fleetwood Mac.

    True story
    Word

PS Dear Marina, you are a badass.

  119. I still have that dream – flying through the air
like swimming through the water. I remember
them becasue they’re usually quite vivid
Superman could carry off the women, though…
I always seem to be in a hurry to get somewhere.

  120. runawayscott says:

Marina, you look more sultry and seductive with every video. My fantasy would be a single day after school with you  . a single day would be beyond anything I could ever hope for. Anyway I like to request the word SULTRY.

  121. davemarkwz says:

I always had a fantasy where if I won an exorbitant amount of cash,
I might take over a failing lion-rescue/tiger-rescue reserve.
It’s weird. Just as I was about to donate to the local place down here…
… they buckle and have to close or change owner (not sure).

  122. bite_me23 says:

Hi Marina! I wanna know the origin of the word “clutz” its such a strange word and I can’t seem to find where it came from. Can you help me?

  123. mdotmodasuci says:

My fantasy is someone coming to my house and delivering me $1,000,000. That would be epic.

Also, I still want to know where the “BRAND” in “BRAND NEW” came from.

  124. Dezdkado says:

    Word Request: Diary

Marina… Girls write them and historians often depend on them, but where did the word come from?

Miss CC, here’s your cance to interrupt my request.

  125. Now that everybody wants to know the origins of the crisis, the economic crisis, why don’t you explain the origin of the word CRISIS. I think it used to have a more profound/complete meaning than the one we usually give to it.

  126. newbscanpk says:

I’d like to suggest the word : BARGAIN.

  127. erislefae says:

Marina, Phantasticus and Phantastikos got me thinking: my brother was in an accident last year, and lost his leg. He had, as the doctors said, a “phantom limb” after his amputation. Is the word “Phantom” related to Phantastikos?

  128. pedanticKarl says:

Since you wanted to fly, have you ever had a flying dream? I’ve had two and you will never forget them. They were fantastic. Most of my fantasies have come true  so I need to work on some new ones now.

    • pedanticKarl says:

Oh, by the way, for some reason, this video had a special charm about it. It seemed your delivery was slower and more deliberate. I like the change of pace and gives the video a charming character. Excellent and going over to YT to rate and subscribe. Oh, wait a minute, I’m already subscribed.

    • foxbow says:

do you actualy remember every dream you’v had?…….iv had a few about flying that’s all I know ……I crashed ones  …… not that fanastic

      • pedanticKarl says:

No, I don’t remember every dream foxbow, but I’ve had some very interesting ones and those I have remembered, especially the flying dreams. Those were so vivid and fantastic that there is no way to describe the feeling of flying and I can see why Marina would want that to be her fantasy to fly like Superman.

    • Bob says:

I frequently have dreams of flying – hardly surprising considering my career – but what is curious is that I am frequently flying without a flying machine of any kind, flying free like a bird, no checklists, no limitations and no fuel to run out of.
      A unique feeling of freedom.

  129. Capman911 says:

That was a great video as I had never thought that fantastic would come from fantasy. I see now by looking at the words there must be some kind of correlation between the two as they are spelled relatively the same and your etymology makes it clear they have the same back ground, but different meanings, sort of.
My fantasy would have been world peace. But by the way things are going between countries and in our own home land we can forget that.

  130. Bob says:

Marina, I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news but, regarding your fantasy to fly like Superman … there’s no easy way to say this … you have failed the medical; but we can offer you the opportunity to fly like Superwoman.
I hope you will not regard this as sexual discrimination.

  131. goku22 says:

Hey hot for words, I just wanted to know the origins of the navel. I understnd how I get the word belly button, but where does navel come from?

  132. crunchy says:

    Hey my most favourite teacher,

I’d like to request the word “autumn”, I think it has something to do with the latin “autumnus”, but I wan’t to know everything…
    Hope you can tell me!
    Be good ;)

  133. manu1123 says:

The word missionary has more than one meaning. One is for religious people who set out on missions and the other is the missionary position. Where did missionary position come from?

  134. dylanb says:

    Hi Marina,

I love words and you are quite lovely too.

How about the origin of the word LACHRYMOSE – meaning tearful..?

    Keep up your great work!

    Dylan

  135. Hey Hey
Could you investigate the german word “zeitgeist” which is also an english word?

    greetings

  136. darkguru07 says:

PLease can you tell me the origin of the word “Amaizing”?
    You´re amaizing

    • Dezdkado says:

Homework: As a historian, my fantasy is rather dull to many… but it would be fantastic to travel back through time to see history as it was, and not just described in a book, or someone’s fantasy.

      • buzzword says:

historian, any particular area or era?

      • Dezdkado says:

Hey buzz, sorry for the delay… I was selfishly feeding my face.

My love is history and archaeology of the fertile crescent region (hence the bronze age WMD joke), but my degree work is on the other side of the planet… history and archaeology of Central and South America… Inca, Nazca, Maya, Aztec, Olmec, etc.

One of my professors, on a dig to a Mayan ruin called Rio Azul, found the first child proof cap! It was a ceramic cacao (chocolate) pot with a locking lid. It did such a good job that there were remains of a ceremonial cacao offering within.

One day I hope to return to school, get my Masters or Doctorate in Archaeology and become Indiana Dez… minus the grave robbing… but I love the whip and hat.

      • buzzword says:

dude, thats cool. yeah, the fertile crescent region that would be a great, great area to work in, lots of discoveries waiting. i was working on my masters in anthropology and studied in nicaragua. visited a site with hieroglyphics that had recently been exposed as volcanic ash had washed away. by the way, where are you now?

      • Dezdkado says:

Hanging with some friends in Texas… wow, Nicaragua… was it a Mayan site? Dammit that’s cool!

      • Dezdkado says:

As for the fertile crescent, due to the present war the area is pretty much untouchable unless you’re in Jordan or Israel. I was in Iraq back in 2005 and was able to look at Babel’s ruins from across the river in Al Hillah. I’ve also flown over Ur… so close yet so far away. Some of the allies posted their camps near the ruins of several sites. The constant vibration from all of the movement of heavy machinery and tanks has damaged many sites. Of course Saddam did a number on his country’s sites as well… if I ever get back I may weep, but I’ll have plenty of work to do… if only cataloging remains and damage.

      • bsomebody says:

cool to hear  I, too, am a historian. I am currently going back for my Master’s. Wish me luck

      • Dezdkado says:

 I wish for you skill, bottomless grants, and the the ability to research and publish at the drop of a hat. May thy references never bite thee in the ass.

    • Dezdkado says:

For Marina’s fantastic experience I offer the words of a by-gone poet:

      The Eagle and the Hawk

I am the eagle, I live in high country
In rocky cathedrals that reach to the sky
I am the hawk and there’s blood on my feathers
But time is still turning they soon will be dry
And all of those who see me, all who believe in me
Share in the freedom I feel when I fly

Come dance with the west wind and touch on the mountain tops
Sail o’er the canyons and up to the stars
And reach for the heavens and hope for the future
And all that we can be and not what we are

    Marina,

What is the noise at 2:07 that sounds like a bell.

I don’t really like things that are not real (like hair extentions) But…. You look great with longer hair (not that you do without of course..)

Also.. My fantasy… Me meeting you in Blu Jam..

Come on you are just asking for trouble by asking that question!!

    • HotForWords says:

My cell phone getting a text is what you heard.

      • James says:

Sorry I meant not that you dont look great without or maybe i dint .. I cant think right now.. You know what I mean though… I love that sound… its all nice and……..chimey..

      • Bob says:

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
        And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of- wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up, up the long, delirious burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never Lark, or even Eagle flew -
And while with silent lifting mind, I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.

        - John Gillespie Magee, Jr,
a WWII fighter pilot who lived from 1922-1944
