Could Care Less

Just an easy lesson guys… I had to do this one as I heard this expression one too many times recently!

I could care less is incorrect.

‘Everyone’ knows that ‘could care less’ is the sarcastic ‘ironical’ form of I couldn’t care less…(learned during my mispent youth while perfecting ‘NOT’ jokes).

    Ummm…what’s that…’Everyone’ doesn’t know that…why not?…ohhhhh…

  7. Dear Teacher, While watching and somewhat listening to that lesson, towards the end I heard some kind of a sound before you were going to work out. It bought back a past lesson on the word feisty,if you know what I mean? Was that blamed on the little dog? Anyway,I couldn’t care less about that lesson, but i could care less about your sexy teacher outfit today! I couldn’t keep my eyes off you, I had to replay it twice just to hear what the lesson was about! Keep it up!

Word request: Have you ever heard the expression “My eye!”, meaning – “That’s untrue or unbelievable.” Where did this come from? Is it used in other languages or just English? (Do German’s ever say “Mine auge!” in the same context, for example.?) Is it in any way related to the expression – “My foot!”? Are their other body parts that have these kind of meanings?
    Love the show
P.S. What was the deal with the lawn mower attack, awhile back? Glad you survived O.K.

  10. Marina – FYI (low priority)

On the YT “I could care less” video, when you click to see all comments, I noticed that one of your responses was flagged as spam, which should be impossible as the owner (HFW) of the channel has no spam or thumb ratings.

It was your reply to “briandaldridge” that is flagged as spam.

I will notify YouTube right now and let them know of a possible bug.

Hi Marina, I’ve been watching your show for a couple of weeks now, and i think it’s awesome! My name is David and I’m from Germany so don’t mind if there are any faults in my text – just keep them :)

Now my request: In thelast couple of weeks we’ve been out with some friends, drinking and having fun in the city… btw. I live in cologne! I really enjoyed your shows where you mentioned “my” city like in Eau de Cologne!
So, whatever! Sipping beer and Wodka we became pretty drunk and started ordering Cocktails and almost immediately started argueing about the roots or origins of that word! In english language, cock is already a… word with two meanings! But in german, “Cock” and “Tail” both mean “Schwanz” (commonly Used for penis, but also means a horse’s tail) which – translated to english again usually means “Cock” so it would be a “CockCock” which is very… well.. you know!? Confusing :)

So please, HotForWords, investigate! I need to know this for sure, so that next time i can teach my friends, when we are sitting in cologne again ;)

See you very soon, byebye my teacher!
    Be good! :)

  18. Thanks for doing a video on this. That always bothered me. I stopped using it in high school because I was used to saying it incorrectly and it didn’t feel natural to say it correctly. I can’t remember what I was using it for probably because I didn’t have any concern for it. You poor thing. How could they force you to listen to Howard Stern? What monsters. Maybe you could do a video on the word “monster” or maybe “mafia” and “mobster”? It looks like the workout is doing wonders.

  19. By the way,

I have been using “couldn’t care less” all day.

And since you’re addressing the correction of phrases, dare we revisit this phrase request of mine…? (from your burrito video)…
Well, Marina, you finally have backed me up on something I’ve been telling people for years, that the burrito is not even Mexican, and that the name implies that the burrito is made from donkey meat (well you didn’t say that, but the name would start you thinking… HHmmm!). And I’ve never met a Mexican who would agree that the word ‘enchilada’ really means anything either. It’s just another American neologism for the purpose commercialization.
Hey, Marina… Remember when you made the video about common mistakes people make and how it sends chills up and down that alluring narrow back of yours…? (e.g. your when they should say you’re). Well, I think you made one of those common mistakes at the end of this video But, maybe it’s just my opinion, SO maybe you could research it for me. You said, “Which do you like better”?, and I know everyone says that. But, I’ve always thought it should be “like more” (the way they say in other languages, like Spanish [e.g. Cual te gusta más?, which do you like more?]). The reasoning is that liking something is a quantitative ability, not a qualitative ability. “Which do you play better, the trumpet or the guitar”? vs. “Which sound do you like more, the trumpet or the guitar”? So, am I just nit-picking ( hey, there’s one for you to investigate, hotty for words ) or am I correct in insisting upon this correction. I’ve given up correcting everyone around me long ago… Now that the king is dead and the land across the Atlantic has become industrialized, no one cares about making sure they speak the king’s English anymore and anyway. mmmmmmMMMMMWAH! (Hey, you don’t do that anymore )

  29. The word PSYCHEDELIC……

    WHERE DID IT COME FROM!!!!!!!!!!???????

  30. dellforce says: 108

Hello Marina! Remember me? I’m a chessplayer!! Are you impressed? I want to know about the word Check. I already know that Checkmate comes from the Persian Shah meaning King and mat, meaning kill or killed. Actually the German word for Checkmate, shach mat is even closer than English (but Italian is the funnest way to say it: scaccomatto BUT, Check…? When you attack your opponent’s King why is that saying “King” or CHECK has come to be the way things are done. Or could it be that check really means check as in, “Check yourself and what you should do, Mr. or Mrs. Opponent” “I’m attacking you”! And, by the way, did you know that in the World Chess Federation’s (Federation Internationale d’Echec or FIDE) rule book it is NOT mandatory to say, “Check”! Many people like to reprimand their opponent’s for not saying, “check”, but knowing when you’re attacked is your responsibility. The onus is not on the attacker to let the victim know when the direct attack on the King is present. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll get the chance to mate YOU, Marina!!! BTW, I finally understand co-comment. This comment is a re-posting from a couple of days ago. When I finished it, I couldn’t find it after I had hit “submit comment” left the screen and then immediately tried to find it again. I was like, “Where the hell did my comment go” ? The thing was I had just watched a previous vid and I was searching for it on that page. Now, after all this time since you first introduced co-comment, I understand. So, now I’ll see (i.e. check) if this comment transfers to co-comment. Any readers will have to get co-comment to find out… mmmmMMMMMWAH!

  37. THANK YOU for clearing that up! I’ve been wondering about the logic behind this for years since i never thought “I could care less” made any sense. I just never bothered to use it but now I can rub the correct phrase in my friends’ faces =P

  38. stunnedfish says: 99

Wouldn’t the phrase “could care less” be appropriate if followed by an unspoken “but”, meaning one cares very little, but there are concievably things which one could care less about. Just a thought.

I always correct people on that one. They usually give me a blank stare as if they have know idea what i’m talking about. Or they act like I’m ’splitting hairs’. Thanks for addressing this one. 48. mrchex says: 86

Hi Marina! i wondered about this phrase in the same way as you did. It is rather annoying. Glad you did it.

I would think “Couldn’t care less” is indifferent as you said. Perhaps an abandonment of any constructive action towards something. Perhaps one would be caring less if he wasn’t just ‘leaving something or someone alone’ and was engaging in destructive action towards that something or someone! perhaps that is caring less….

Well I am feeling a bit philosophical with all this. Perhaps I should change my name to….. “thoughtforwords” ;)

You are making good observations on here and am happy you are having fun at the same time.

    Homework :-
I can’t remember the last time I used the phrase “I couldn’t care less” but I have certainly implied it, usually when asked my opinion about some television soap-opera.
I have never said “I could care less”; my failing has more often been that I care too much, and thereby come into conflict with those who don’t care enough.
I remember a C.O. in the Navy who had a cute substitute expression for “couldn’t care less”. He would say, “This is a matter of complete embuggerance to me”.

  56. magix says: 78

    Yes, I have.

Got to admire your work ethic Marina, I wish we all had it  .

For that matter, where did we get i.e.? Thanks.

  57. mijj says: 77

M’s whole reasoning rests upon the assumption that it’s not possible to care a negative amount … maybe that assumption should be examined.

lets say .. a zero amount of caring is indifference .. then couldn’t a negative amount of caring be something like dislike .. erm .. for instance .. discare?

in which case it is always possible to care less.
if you’re saying you couldn’t care less then you’re saying you discare something to the infinite degree (which takes infinte effort on your part) .. which is not the same as being indifferent (which takes no effort on your part)

  63. Hello Marina that was a good video. I can remember.i read something like this it was in a song.Anyway you are a excellent teacher. The song was kiss yesterday goodbye

  64. davemarkwz says: 68

I differ in opinion, here. I see the phrase as a threat to the targeted
person that they don’t care very much. If pressed, then they will care
    even less.
Marina, you are correct in that the party involved does care a little.
but put simply the phrase is meant as a threat to care just-that-much-less.
So, I don’t think the phrase it self has anything incorrect about it.

    Instructor Marina,
Homework: The last time I used “I couldn’t care less” was during a conversation about some chatroom I was once a part of. I chose to cease communication in it because I noticed the high levels of drama. I couldn’t care less about drama, life is too short to get caught up in worthless “he said, she said” conversations.

  75. Haarg says: 57

Marina, my Love, since you have done one usage lesson, perhaps you could do another on one of my pet peeves: using “. . . most everyone.”

There can be most, or there can be everyone, but the two should not be used together.

I leave you, Dear Teacher to explain why.

    • masco82 says: 57.1

its jsut the same as “almost all” almost everyone is the way it should be said but just like my pet peeve….using the word “that” wrong….i thing “that” flies or some one “that” loves you…i cant say its wrong but dang it gets on my bloody nerves….hehehe…perhaps i lived in texas too long, “that”, or im just a stiffass (”that”) doesnt like “that” much…like i hope most everybody else…hehehee…thats actualy a pretty wierd word too…but you could care less right….i saw a odd word while sitting in traffic today…a biospital….i thought a biology research place for hospital…but if you cut it down bio is two thing exsiting together sepratly and spital is a place of shelter or care…the word hostpital…still a spital but ho…is that short for hospus or homo sapian…dont know…wont pass that billboard till monday…thats if im not looking at the sunday driver in front of me…hehehe yeah ill go with that word…thanks..youve been a brain storm of a help…danke

  78. jmcargal says: 54

Your timeline sounds right. As a high school student in the 60’s I constantly heard people say, always with a sarcastic tone, “I could care less.” It struck me as stupid back then and it still does. The person who uses this phrase does not seem to listen to their own words. However, the explanation below that it is ironic seems to jibe with the sarcasm. I do not think the speakers of this phrase thought it out though. HIgh school students often repeat one another much like parrots.

    • Hi jmcargal, I agree and like what you said. Very nicely phrased.

    • Pseudonym says: 54.3

Hi. Where was your high school, if I may ask?

The fact that people were using it in a “sarcastic tone” as you say suggests that those who used the phrase were at least somewhat aware that they were using verbal irony.

  79. masco82 says: 53

actually i have a contrary argument on this one…i agree that if someone says they couldnt care less is like saying i dont care at all..true. however, if someone says they could care less it usualy acompanied by gestures that would say…i dont care i am showing you i dont care whould you like me to show you how much i dont care cause i could…ok i got a better example….say for instance i request a word…i request the term “sunday driver” my dad always shouted at speeding drivers and refered to them as “sunday drivers” or if a slow driver came across him he would shout “get out of the way damn sunday driver” or on any given day of the week he shout and call them a lousey sunday driver. now is this a word you would investigate or could you care less…if you couldnt care less you would have clicked next or delete before getting this far….if you could care less…well you got this far but the request is at the bottom of your pickings..too boring..or so…something you would have deleted had you not cared less..hehehee…see my point….last example cause theres another way that supports the fisrt idea but could be considered rambleing….by they way they way im typing i could care less how the words end up being spelt…ok about your boobs…i couldnt care less if your boobs are real or not….but if you sent me an email saying you wanted to enhance them….images of surgury and stuff like that would go through my head…eek…i could care less for that…

This is the first time this has ever happened, but I think that Marina is wrong on this one, or at least her interpretation isn’t the only possible one explained by the facts, or at the very least that this isn’t the whole story.

I believe that the phrase “I could care less” is correct, and was originally intended to be ironic.

There’s plenty of precedent in New York Yiddish phrases. Some you may have heard include:

    - “Tell me about it”, meaning “you could not possibly tell me any more about it”.
    - “I should be so lucky”, meaning “I could never be that lucky”.
    - “I should live so long”, meaning “I will never live long enough to see that”.
    - “Go figure”, meaning “you will never figure that out”.

“I could care less” is probably not a Yiddish phrase, but the fact that it’s confined to the United States is very suggestive.

In summary, I don’t think that it’s incorrect to use the phrase “I could care less” so long as you use the correct inflection. It’s probably best to avoid it in writing, where the irony is hard to get across, but I would consider it defensible in informal speech if you say it the right way.

    • Hello Pseudonym, although I agree with the general theme of your comment, Marina did not make a value judgment of right or wrong of either phrase. She merely pointed out that the original proper phrase over time became misused in such a way that what one is communicating is the opposite of what is intended.

Underneath the video, she did state that the phrase “I could care less” is incorrect, but that is within the context of the lesson, meaning that most people use the phrase incorrectly, and therefore are incorrect.

Although I might agree with your last sentence, the problem is the “if” word as you stated. How many people know how to say it the properly? Notice my comment below in that I have never used either phrase as it is too much bother to get it right.

Nice and educational. Just today, I had to tell somebody what they were saying was a brain drain and that I could not care about supermodels. More parents today seem to think that their children are models.

  83. I have always use couldn’t in that prase.
I can’t remember the last time I used it though.

  84. Whooo Hoooo!!! 10 Million stars for this video !!!!
You know how to get to me don’t you Marina.
I absolutely loved the correction of Stern to get his slashes correct.
AND, loved your superb explanation of “Could care less…”
    Terrific lesson !!!

    • Believe it or not, but I have never used the expression I couldn’t care less or the wrong version as it’s construction is awkward and makes my brain hurt.

Another good video lesson might be one on mispronounced words such as “supposably”.

Some of those are hilarious and remind me of a book, that my father bought when I was a kid, called “How to speak Strine”.
It was a humorous transliteration of English spoken with an “Ostrayan” accent; I think it contained the “Laura Norder” example given in the page you referred to, along with another well known “Ostrayan” personality, “Emma Chizit” (How much is it?).
I remember it provided many belly laughs in my family all those years ago, and I wish I knew what became of it.

WORD REQUEST: APPLE FOR THE TEACHER
How is it that it was considered customary to bring the teacher an apple? A friend thinks it has to do with the alphabet like “A” is for apple and I think it has to do with Adam and Eve and the forbidden fruit of knowledge. Maybe is it something else entirely, can you help?

  89. When my high school friends all stabbed me in the back, and spread lies(I mean this literally too, I wish I were making this up) through the -whole school- in my absence, I found out during my absence from an inside source, came back, caught them all standing outside of the bus loop, and I basically cut them from my life. That would be an instance of me being in a situation where I ‘couldn’t care less’. Eh, that was some 7 years ago, though :)

WORD REQUEST: Irk. It’s simple, short, and it -must- be short for something else, and it’s a word growing into being archaic in a way.

    My Dear Teacher,

Thank you for shining a bright light on one of my “pet peeves.” I was actually alive in the 1970s and, although I was only a small child, was irritated by newcomers to my “hood” who said “could care less” to mean “couldn’t care less.” For unknown reasons, those who said “could care less” always had an “air” of superiority as compared to those who only said “couldn’t care less.”

Those same individuals also said things like “itching” to mean “scratching” and had “ruffs” instead of “roofs.”

Ok, I better stop before someone “axes” me why I “be” “chillin” online in my “crib” on Saturday night instead of “gettin down” with the “shorties” in a club.

    Good night, my teacher,

    Lucky

    I could care less..in fact, I don’t give a fk!

  94. Unequivocal Marina is my word request, not in your list, however I just introduced it in my latest comment on YouTube “Could Care Less!”

I’m sorry Marina “I could care more” except unequivocally we could do more for you except that I am everyday myself busy becoming a star presenting long distance from London to LasVegas for the members of http://www.myzenzuu.org ! I’m always on the money bringing the positive quality of the content that I last year scripted for your Blog relating to new years resolutions!

I really would value the opportunity to introduce you as my guest on one of those calls, since I find it is increasingly becoming my place to provide more inspiring content and what could be more inspiring than to introduce the professor of philology to lead my members to the income that is waiting for them in Social Networks like yours and mine and I can think of no finer addition to our members than you Marina to help us build our 80% revenue share network

I’m also thankful that YouTube aren’t so short-sighted as MySpace who seem to be worried about the threat we pose to their market share since while we welcome their members and promote the use of MySpace they don’t welcome ours since when we mention myzenzuu.org they close our accounts for saying that myzenzuu.org is obscene language! LOL YouTube in my opinion Rocks as does Myzenzuu.com however you Marina Rock more than most Ma’am!

I’ve used the term “I Couldn’t Care Less”.
But what I used it for I can’t remember because I couldn’t care less about it and don’t waste brain power remembering what I couldn’t care less about. To do so would be to care.

  98. daroo says: 32

can you do the word “Anarchy”?

  99. one semi-situp?…it appears you couldn’t care less for your workout routine…

i have always said, when i say it, “i couldn’t care less”…much like when i use a negative followed by the conjunction “nor,” i’ve gotten flak from those who couldn’t care less if their grammar matches what they’re saying…

i think the last time i used the phrase in the lesson, though, was in speaking to my daughter about her excuses for her misbehaviour – as in, “i couldn’t care less what your friends do”…

if you ever need a spotter, though, i’m pretty sure there are more than a few here who would care to volunteer…

just remember who mentioned it first…

  100. seesixcm6 says: 30

Dear совершенная Marina, That was a useful service to tell us the correct term is “I couldn’t care less.” The verb, “to care” means to be concerned or interested, so this shows a lack of care or interest. For your homework, I’ve never used that statement. Here, I usually hear people say, “I don’t care.” Vulgar people will say, “I don’t give a ______.” (Usually an expletive is used.)
I hope you enjoy your workouts. You must exercise very often and very well to keep such a thin, slender waist! I too, must exercise more often. When winter comes, the cold weather keeps me indoors most of the time and I also tend to eat more in the winter. (Actually, I seem to eat more all the time, and in all seasons! ) I’ll keep exercising!
    Your dear student, seesixcm6

    Dear teacher:

Homework: (stay away from this Koby this isn’t a doggie treat, sit, stay, nice boy)

As a logically trained being, I always say “I don’t care”, referring to a particular transition of a finite state machine defined by a state transition diagram, abbreviated as “STD” which is not a medical state of sordid affairs otherwise “I do care”.

    Hi Marina!

I am a big fan of politics/government. I would love it if you did a political/government series for HotForWords. Today, in American, there has been allot of talking about the word Liberal as if it is a bad word. Is it a bad word? Where did Liberal come from?
