phrase request: [ cat got your tongue ?] this is sometimes said to people who are not speaking for responding when they ought to be. How did this come into meaning? It makes you envision a cat running around with a human tongue in its mouth as a reason for somebody not being able to speak.. Hot for Words needs to investigate! :)

I taught myself to read just before I turned 4 years old, When I was seven, I read “Les Miserables,” “The Count of Monte Cristo” and “The Three Musketeers.” I have been averaging three books per week ever since. I have also written two novels and lots of short stories and articles. Peter McWilliams, Dave Barry and Terry Pratchett have praised my novels, but I have not been able to sell them to a publisher.

    • Well….thanks for making the rest of us feel dumb….

      • You had the same opportunities as I did. It’s not my fault you were more interested in games and sports than you were in literature and history. It all works out in the end. When you vote for the lesser of the two evils next month, we will still get evil. I won’t be voting for either of those assholes, but I will still live in a country run by evil assholes who are traitors to the Constitution and mass-murdering war criminals. Maybe I should have spent my time trying to get the neighbor’s panties off instead of reading the classics.

    • It’s all good my friend. I was just joking around. You nailed it though, I did do all of those things you said while others were reading.
As far as the candidates are concerned….”It does don’t belong to man who is walking even to direct his step”.
      (Jeremiah 10:23)……well I guess I’ve read a little.

    • By the way….You look like Charlton Heston. (or is that not YOUR picture on your Gavitar)

  14. Oh, dear Marina – I really do want to know if you have a Kalashnikov.

  15. Good morning, Marina! Good morning, everyone! The Lord has blessed us with a beautiful day here in the Home of the Armadillo. How about a lesson on the word “quick?” I can be quick to embarass myself in this comment box, and I can tear a nail down to the quick. Ya’ll have a great day! Love you, Teach!

Here is an interesting “word” origin to do. Actually it isn’t a word, but a sign. What is the origin of using the colour red for the tail lights on cars? These days we think of red for “danger” or “stop” – but why? Where did that come from? Why not green or some other colour? I think I’m correct in saying that they used red warning lights back in the early days of the railways – but it probably goes much further back – or does it?

Marina, football season is upon us in the US. While growing up I played a great deal of football, and a practice game was often called a scrimmage. It sounds similar to the word “skirmish,” as in a battle or a fight. Are the two words related? Where did scrimmage come from?

    boring folk singer
    boring folk singer

    • mijj says: 122.1

i can see what’s happening … i upload vids that aren’t on YT and announce them here .. ppl here see the vid and a HotForWords vid becomes a related vid.

ppl not associated with hfw wil also see the vid and their last habit will be on the related vids list ..

.. which means i’m a virus!! .. i’m spreading HFW into the eyes of ppl who might otherwise not be tainted!

      • mijj says: 122.1.1

well .. very few people given that only a handful of people see my vids.

      • Hey mijj, regarding the “Related Videos” on YT, here is what I have been able to garner. The elements that are monitored by YT are; the video title, video description, video tags, your subscriptions and probably the people subscribing(?) to you and many more things that I’m not aware of.

After I set up a friend’s YT channel, he of course subscribed to HFW. Do you think he had choice?

Almost half of the 20 Related videos of his first video that he uploaded belong to HFW, yet neither the tags, nor title, nor description reference HFW. The only HFW connection is that he is a HFW subscriber, and I subscribed to his channel.

I looked at some of your other subscriptions and that may answer the questions you had down below.

How come none of your YT channels are subscribed to HFW YT channel? Don’t let our teacher find out, or you’ll be disappointed.

        • mijj says: 122.1.3.1

erm .. well .. i don’t think teach is bothered about subs is she? .. i mean .. i’m here all the time and know when the vids turn up .. so the sub doesn’t matter does it?

.. i think the simplest way to relate vids to the current one is to go by the prev vids visited.
          - there’s nothing in my subs, or tags, or title, or anything at all related to hotforwords .. the only link is the visitors from here. – so that must be it.

    • re: “… the only link is the visitors from here. – so that must be it.”
Yes, that’s what I think it is also. I think YT does something similar to the “six degrees of kevin bacon”.

I was suggesting subscribing to YT HFW since our teacher said at the beginning of this video that you won’t be disappointed. Just trying to help you out.

… other odd stuff in there too.

This one goes back to the pagan days. When you knock on wood, you are invoking the spirit that lives in trees for their help.

      Both were good books.
