- Why to most is be cause we think something will change.
Statistics show that 7 out of 5 people don’t really understand statistics.
- When I ( a Yankee ) went to Auburn I learned that they were taught that if the car in front of you has his blinkers on you should put yours on to alert the cars behind that someone up ahead is ( or might be ) turning. Many turned without though, some preferring to make their intentions known on CB ( “Breaker one-nine; I’m fixin’ to turn left” ). And there was one car ( a white, 1962 Valiant ) that had his right turn signals on for the entire 4 years I was there. Near as I can determine he bought the car with them blinking and never figured out how to turn them off.

Before Napoleon’s time MOST military officer ranks were bought, and you could be what ever rank you could afford. When wars were fought with men lined up on hillsides volleying at one another this wasn’t so critical. With the advent of artillery it became more important for some officers to actually know what they were doing; that is how Napoleon rose through the ranks, through education and knowledge. But to this day political pull will often do more than skill, unless there is a military action in progress. Many state maintained National Guards are still more politics than skill; the Kentucky Colonels are a classic example but not unique. - Sergeant
Petty here means small – as in under the ‘real’ officers. A PO1 does have a little authority; in aviation the difference between AN and PO2 wasn’t negligible, but it wasn’t near the difference between a CPO and a PO1. I made it to AWA2 and then went to college ( where I made AWV1 ) on a Navy scholarship ( NESEP ) and retired as a LT.Technically CPOs are also Petty Officers, but I’d hate to be the one to break the news to one.

In the Navy the REAL power lies with the Chiefs ( and one would be wise NOT to think of them as servants ). First Class Petty Officers wield a lot of power as well; Second and Third Class PO’s, not so much.I was a First Class ( AWV1 ) before I became an Ensign ( theoretically senior, but not in practice ). I retired as a Lieutenant ( O3E ), one of a very few officers with a Good Conduct Medal ( only awarded to Enlisted Men ).
