Dear Marina, every time you welcome us on your lessons you use the word “student/s”.I would like to know the origin of this one, and i hope you will surprise me with the answer because i think the only link of this word is to “studies”. Хотелось бы услышать ваш ответ, как русская- русскому.

  12. James says: 93

Are you uploading at the moment Marina? I am. 222MB for 3 mins of film…….. This had better be good :???:

    • Marina says: 93.1

That seems a bit extreme James.. I am uploading a 2:50 video and it’s only 95 MB. You need to compress a little more. Do H.264 (which is mpeg 4 I think) and do 2 or 4 mbs video and 128kbs aac audio

      • James says: 93.1.1

I know. It’s a wmv at 1280×720 made in vegas. I think thats the best I can get at the moment. I will look in to it more next week I am fed up of seeing movie editors on my computer. Thats all I did yesterday… I have no life! Oh well I have college tomorrow and my grandad is 91 so we will go say happy birthday to him. damn filesize!

  34. rosiecheeks says: 69

On a totally opposite/unimportant note. Marina, can you do the word ‘Chlamydia’. And, you dressed very nice in this video. You should dress like that more often, it’s very fresh.

  35. rosiecheeks says: 68

No, it wasn’t My Stepmother is an Alien. It’s the movie where the alien girl mixes up all the food in the blender and the other normal human girl asks her why she did that and the alien girl said ‘what does it matter, it all goes in the same place’ or something like that. WHAT IS THE NAME OF THIS MOVIE. I’m asking a ton of other message boards too. Hopefully, this one can help me, since there are so many smart people on this board, i’m sure a few of you can figure it out.

  36. What is red and smells like blue paint?

  37. nettehexe says: 66

    great explanation!! Now I know-!

But did you know that in German (colloquial language)we use the word zwitschern also for drinking alcohol : einen zwitschern!!

  38. swampwiz says: 65

Marina, I’ve noticed that Russian women such as yourself seem to mispronounce the Latin ‘v’ as ‘w’. It’s like you are thinking that the German or Polish ‘w’ and ‘v’ are the same, and that since ‘w’ in English is pronounced like the Russian vowel ‘у’ (that’s ‘oo’ in English), that the ‘v’ must be pronounced like that as well.

  39. k00biak says: 64

I saw a very interesting word that I would like to know where it came from and the word is: Quixotic
The word just stands out to me because within it there are so many letters that statistics show to be some of the most infrequently used when compared to others. BTW I find your videos very interesting. I like etymology and keep a lexicon handy but it doesnt get into word histories very much. Thanks for all of your info.

    • nathan19 says: 64.1

A writer, Miguel de Cervantes, wrote an immense novel–and actually considered by some people to be the first “modern” novel–entitled Don Quixote [say it, Don Kee-ho-tay]. It’s about a guy who’s infatuated with the idea of being an adventurous knight, a chivalrous gentleman and such. So he gets a horse, a sidekick named Sancho Panza, develops a devotion to a farm girl that he fancies to be a princess, and goes around in search of quests to do, suffering from the total delusion that all the stuff he’s read about courageous knights and the like is true. The most famous example is that he attempts to joust a windmill, believing it to be a loathsome giant. Anyways, the point is, the word “quixotic” refers to a task that is ridiculously impossible, even calling into question the sanity of the person trying to accomplish it, like jousting windmills.

      And you think it’s funny,
      It’s snot.

(You’ll have to come up with something amusing for the chewing gum part yourself).

      • 2utoday says: 63.1.1

 I was typing a note to Marina. She is not my honey but I’m sure she must be somebody’s honey. She is just too cute not to be. Why do I chew gum? I’ll tell you why-chewing gum this time of year makes my ears pop to the sound of Christmas music! And on top of all that,my nose is running and I can’t seem to catch it. And that is the name of that tune!! I think!!

  42. If romance is a word that originated from Roman times… what was it called before that?

Are Rudolph Valentino and St. Valentine related?

Did French kiss originate in France or were people doing this sort of thing as soon as they stepped out of the Garden of Eden?

    • Do you suppose that someday someone will try to use Twitter as an aliby?

“Your honor, I offer into evidence as Defendant’s A, my Twitter log, wherein at 8:04PM, the same time as the alledged murder was committed, it clearly states, ‘I’m climbing the Eiffel Tower as we speak. The people down there look like ants.’”

      • The sad thing is, CampKohler, I wouldn’t be surprised if they did. If you haven’t already heard of this story, a lawyer defending a rapist used pictures from the victim’s Facebook page showing her at a party and smiling as evidence that she wasn’t going through the sort of trauma indicative of having been raped.

I swear, it’s like sometimes I wake up in the morning and think to myself, “You know, this world could not possibly get any more stupid.” And then the world says, “Oh yeah? Well, fuck you: I just did.”

    • Bob says: 53.1

It’s just easier to say, same as sha’n't instead of shalln’t.
      These are not real words
{Bob still ducks instinctively, expecting a salvo of invective from aLx} but transliterations of colloquialisms which are frowned upon in formal writing.

Marina, does this new program tie into our email system, so if I left you a message on the YouTube site subject you would receive it. If not I left a comment for you to look at about the YouTube algorithm. I hope it helps.

    • Marina says: 51.1

No it doesn’t yet.. thanks for the links.. this algorithm is new though.. so I think those articles refer to the general algorithm that I’ve been using up to now.

      Thanks though!

      • sigh :???: i cant use twitter if its only for the mac?

      • Hey Marina,
I know that this has nothing to do with what u and Capman911 were talking about. But would u check the ringtones section, I left a comment there and noticed a lot of confused people there wondering whether u were still doin those.
        PS: Capman rocks!

      • @Marina ***Word request: Algorithm***

There’s a binary star in constellation Perseus called Algol, in which the two stars rotate around each other, the larger, darker star eclipsing the smaller, brighter one once every three days. Among astronomers, this period is known as the “Algol Rhythm.”

Also, there’s a Mexican salsa group known as the Hidalgos. They’re popular for their “Hidalgo-rhythm.”

    • Have you figured out the new editing buttons, yet?
Some are obvious, but not all seem to work predictably.
The “grin” smiley worked ok, but MrGreen didn’t behave as I expected
Oh well! Still works here

    • Currently the YT algorithm is no issue right now for they switch back to making ‘Most Viewed’ the default. But I believe they will revisit this again so might be a good idea to see if there is some logic to this ‘Most Popular’ tab. I suspect goggle is tracking this viral spreading of videos. I’ve abandon my last theory and now Im trying some other ideas. I’ve ran out of post-it notes. I have questions that only the PhillyD, Marina, and a few others can answer for me. They have the keys I need to completely solve the algorithm. Phil’s data is the most valuable.

  62. If I am reading this right, Twitter messages are 140-160 characters (max.). Since the maximum string length is around 255 characters, that leaves 95-105 characters for embedded code, including special characters.
A string walks into a bar and orders a beer.
    The bartender says”Hey! you’re string.”
“Get out We don’t serve your kind here”
Having been kicked out, the string tells his
    friend (another string) what happened.
His friend says “You’re doing it all wrong”
Then the friend bends and twists and
tousles himself up, and goes into the bar.
    The bartender says”Hey! Aren’t you a string?”
    to which his friend answers”No”
    “I’m a frayed knot”
I have enough addiction to this site without wandering
around twittering about every orgasm thing that happens, as it happens
“Oh, I’m coming …to see you later”

I was wondering where the word Q-tip came from?

    http://www.RolandBuckles.com

    • Same here. What’s interesting they say not to use them in your ear but thats exactly what you plan to use them for. I mean what they heck are you going to use them for any way. I hear that they suck for makeup applications, cleaning windows, washing the car, digging up the garden, and pole vaulting in the Olympics. They know you use a lot of them for they sell them in the jumbo size packages.

  71. neuroway says: 29

I instantly connect “twitter” to “duckspeak”, from “1984″, one of George Orwell’s best novel, with “Animal Farm”. Two great novels from a great thinker, visionary and genius.

Twitter. Internet is a very useful tool. But it is also, at the same time, a big corporate-establishment invasion on everyone’s privacy, like cellphones, chat tools, email, sattelites, etc…

For those of you who are interested in astronomy, Jupiter and Venus just showed up again together tonight. Or Aphrodite and Zeus, call them as you want. They are dancing partners in the night for a couple of months. They are very easy to recognize, as they are the two brightest objects in the night sky after the moon. You can see them shining tall, flashing high and looking bright even in the NYC polluted skies. And no, they are not bright enough to make a wolf howl. They just don’t cut it in front of a full moon.

Dear совершенная Marina, Twitter is defined as the succession of short sounds made by a bird, or when people do it, to talk rapidly or chatter about trivial matters. I try not to twitter. I signed up to twitter on the Internet to see the photos you post.
In this video, you dog, Gorby, seems to be better. I hope Gorby fully recovers and will play with you often.
Happy Birthday to you. I hope it is very good for you and your birthday presents bring you happiness. I hope you have many future Happy Birthdays.
Once again, good luck to you on your appearance on the O’Reilly show. I hope you do very well, and also have a safe trip there and back. If you’re away tomorrow, this might mean we won’t get a new video from you, then.

About to check out twitter for the first time thanks to the lovely Marina. xoxoxoxo

  81. Damn.. how can you have such a nice dialect?? i like it.. so why don’t you investigate the origin of the word “dialect”?

btw, the danish word “kvidre” is pronounced with a soft “d”…

    C U ( I will.. )

    • I got no idea what “soft d” means. Can you give any English words that use the sound?

      Signed,

      Stupid

      • Griddle.
Btw, catchy new gravatar you’ve got. Making sure I won’t forget you again?

      • I’m afraid I don’t get the difference. Dog, griddle, dirt. All the same to my ear.

      • Camp: where are you from? It might depend on your accent. In “average American,” the front teeth touch in “dog” and “dirt”, but not in “middle” and “griddle,” producing a sound halfway between “d” and “th”.
Another example of “soft d”: listen to a Mexican say “d” (“Buenos dias.”) They put their tongue in back of their top incisors instead of touching their top and bottom incisors, producing a softer “d” sound.

      • well i’m sorry, that is because the sound doesn’t really excists in english  i think.. the soft d has a complete other sound than the normal d, and that is also why it’s so hard to learn the danish language to many people.. it is about the same sound as ‘th’, fx in ‘the’, only the soft d only occurs in the middle of a word.. don’t know if this helps anything..

    • leonard says: 17.2

I would agree with request; it is logical argumentation and what Marxism is based on. Talk about regional speech; look at India and China speaking anglo(english)……speechless#############speaking tube, IiIiIiI

  82. CaptainJack says: 16

Homework: Damn! I failed that assignment.

Im not addicted to the service yet. Im on it all the time for I find it useful for a back channel of communication that works with cellphone and the web. I also have been using loopt.com with my best friend for its GPS capability. It helps us meet up for coffee when we are sort of lost in town. We can even find the closest coffee shop in relation to both of our locations. Loopt also sends updates to twitter which is nice for twitter users. So I use twitter for large group communication and Loopt for close friends that live in my area and have no issue with them knowing where im at.

  83. Marina, thank you for your video avatar apologizing for the pronunciation. I understand how difficult it can be to speak another language correctly. I am trying my hand at speaking Russian, so I am the first one to never criticize your pronunciation, but will give feedback as needed.
I got plenty of feedback growing up here in the US.

Amazing the things I learn here every day; I hadn’t heard this word “zwitschern” in a long time. Did I tell you I loved this lesson?

    • If a bunch of people don’t say something, how can any one of them know they are the first to not say it? The only thing you could go on for that is your birth date, because that’s when you started not saying it. So, unless you know everyone else’s birth date, you can’t know you are the first.

The above logic is so impeccable that there is hardly any reason to go on to a second paragraph.

  84. Dear HotForWords,

    • I wish we could get some of those Gorby updates passed on to us here. Many of us are concerned about the little guy and his girl. The last thing I heard was that he was finally starting to eat a little, but still was not drinking.

I did update you :?: To get further updates one might have to install an internet plug to Groby’s butt for up to the second updates. Maybe its a good reason to use twitter hu? You can always turn it off when your done with it. If you look at the tweets on this page (if the darn thing is working  ) you can read them here.

      • Ouch! Up to the minute? Once a day, is all I ask. Holy-caring-for-a-sick-dog, Jackman! I ask in this forum daily, b/c I notice others here are also concerned. I guess I will go find out my own lazy self. Sheeesh! {somebody puffs up like a blowfish, pouts briefly, scratches his head, and begins contemplating this whole twitter thing.}

    • I remember back in the day when there was a soda maching connected to the internet. It was for good reason. The machine was located on the other side of campus and they could check it without having to make a trip every 2 hours. Yea it was heavily used. There was a coffee pot that was connected to a web cam so anyone could see if there was any coffee left. I even seen a refrigerator and a hot tub connected to the net. This was all when dial up Internet was just getting popular.
