Doesn’t Animare come from the noun Anima meaning soul?

How sad can we men get???Of course i ‘ll have to admit that she is hysterically adorable but salivating over a u-tube persona and posting comments for her and making word requests…As if this very beautiful and above all CUNNING Russian vixen will ever read anything of what we post for her or that she even has the time to bother about all her loving fans.We as a species are so naive.

I loved watching Transformers and G.I.Joe, plus GoBots. Then there was Scooby Doo and The Justice League, as well as The Incredible Hulk & He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. Can’t forget Voltron and ThunderCats, too.

  11. muggins says: 137

I liked Foghorn Leghorn the best, but Yosemite Sam, Goofy and Donald Duck were right up there. Some people might prefer Huckleberry Hound, but myself, I always liked El Kabong better (who happens to be starring on Utube right now). Snaggletooth wasn’t bad either. Special mention oughta be given to Gidney & Cloyd and their scrootch gun. Boris & Natasha are very cool. Felix the Cat and the Master Cylinder are not on my list, but deserve mention because they were so bad they were good. I forgot to mention Popeye, who called dogs, “dorgs”, for all you dorg lovers out there. Has anyone ever seen the Bosko cartoons? Bosko was a trollycar operator who liked jelly sandwiches and romantic picnics with his girl, Honey.

  12. Mine would have to be Thunder cats. but my favorite one now is star wars the clone wars….

  13. tito283 says: 135

mine were Dragon Ball when goku was called “zero”, GI JOE, Voltron, Transformers and Thundercats

  14. my favorite cartoons, besides the Looney Tunes, were Space Ghost and
    Johnny Quest

but animation has come a bit further since those days…witness the two-dimensional Christmas funny deer and, more particularly, the near-three-dimensional
    Evolution of Dance2

but i daresay Marina could make anyone more animated than usual…

  15. Daffy Duck…he’s a selfish, greedy, opportunistic reprobate like me.

  16. CampKohler says: 131

Bug report. Twice I have edited and twice after the successful edit message, it didn’t return to the blog and show the edited msg until I hit the back button. First IE7 shows “Error on page” and then it just sits there with “Done.” After using Back, it returns to the blog and everything looks normal. I have only seen this today and only on this lesson. Editing on Origami minutes earlier worked fine. The original posting of this msg was also OK, but an editing of it caused this problem for the third and fourth times, so it is repeatable. The edits themselves are OK; the problem is returning to the blog.

    Hi Marina!

Again I’m requesting a word, with high hopes this time!

‘Hector’ is a verb meaning to bully, and seeing as it’s my real name, I thought I’d ask how it came about. It would be interesting!

    Thanks!

Last night I witnessed the greatest display of Christmas lights ever, picture yourself park in front of a huge house with ten matching windows, the front door, the edges of the house, trees & various dancing elements trimmed out in lights. You set the car radio on a certain frequency and rockin’ Christmas music blasts out of the speakers, all while the lights are dancing in sync to the music.

The intensity builds as the crescendo come towards the end of We Three King, fantastic!
Just when you thought it could not have gotten any better an electric guitar version of Tchaikovsky ‘s Nutcracker March plays, imagine every note is a difference set of lights blinking in rhythm.

    Totally outstanding display.

See if this link works for Nutcracker March

    • These people went out and bought an FCC broadcast license just to entertain people at Christmas time, how nice is that :???:

      • I doubt that. Getting a license, even a temporary experimental one, involves a lot of technical work such as plotting the curves of radiated power on a map, etc. Using a device designed not to broadcast very far (low power — milliwatts), say in the range of a few hundred feet, even in the broadcast bands, does not require a license. Of course, one would be wise to choose a quiet frequency so as not tick off the neighbors by interfering with listening to local stations or even those of surrounding cities.

The FCC is not going to bug anyone over this unless you pump out a few watts smack on top of licensed station or offer competition to the big boys by establishing a more-or-less permanent station. (Money talks.)

How about the word Dust Bunnys why not just say dust.

    • In the Navy, we called them “ghost turds.”

    • Dust occurs in a even distribution, whereas dust bunnies are clumps of dust (or they would never be noticed).

speaking of dust, we have all seen many times on TV the archealogical layers in the ground. If you go back a certain number of years, you are at this depth and if you go back farther, it is even deeper. In order for this to happen, dust or dirt or something must be falling continuously to build up the earth. If this is so, then it must be so that the entire earth is slowly increasing in diameter. It also follows that if it is depositing in one place, it must be coming from another place. Where is that place and why are the places on TV always the ones where the deposition is taking place?

      Signed,

I can’t believe the sky is falling.

      • A couple of the places from which ’stuff’ is originating:

        -Mountains

        -The Earth’s molten core

A couple of ways said ’stuff’ is being moved:

        -Rivers

-Volcanoes (both on land and submerged underwater)

A couple of places the ’stuff’ is being deposited:

        -River deltas

        -The Mid-Atlantic Ridge

…just my speculation, but I think I’m on the right track…

  29. Hi from new zealand how about the word KIWI or maori

  30. Hey – how about doing a few Christmas words:

Yuletide? Yule log? Yule? What does that have to do with Christmas?

Christmas? Where do they get the “mas?”

Sleigh? Why isn’t it a sled?

Deck the halls? Deck them? What the…? You deck someone when you punch them and knock them down – why are we decking the halls with boughs of holly?

Here we come a “wassailing?” What is that?

Santa Claus? Where’d that come from?

I’m sure that others know of some words that we use every Christmas, but have no idea why….

    • Bob says: 115.1

      Mistletoe = :???: Missing a toe? :lol:
      Holly. Why not Holy?

      catching the christmas spirit?

    • BillyB says: 115.3

Hey propero811, it is nice to see you post here again… I don’t even know exacly why “Dec. 25th”. Most scholars like to argue about stuff like the dates of things, etc.
I think the “mas” part of Christmas is just kind of a religious mass type service, celebrating Christ’s birth & the “deck” thing is probably just short for decorate.
“Wassailing” not even a quess, as my unresearched other ones were, but I imagine cpt. Jack could take a stab at it, if given 1/2 a chance, as “sailing” is part of the word.
Santa Claus , Saint Nick, different all over the world, Sinter Klaus even. Would probably be good lesson for “M”

    • Yuletide was discussed recently here.

A sleigh is a fancier vehicle for riding upon. A sled is a simple vehicle, to which one might be strapped to for transport like a dead carp, a less desirable experience.

  31. hey beautiful, im new here and i was wondering if i could request the word “Babe”. if not, its cool i enjoy ur videos either way.take care=)

  32. HI Marina,

Ну, погоди!- Ну заяц, ну погоди! I liked it!

“Hare and Wolf” (also published under the title “Na, warte!”, “Wolf und Lampi” and “Nu Pagadi”) is one of the best known and most successful Soviet cartoon series, particularly in the former GDR states.

I watched a lot of cartoons growing up. I can’t say what my favorite was because I liked different shows at different ages.

    Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
    Darkwing Duck
    X-Men
    Batman

I can go on and on… lol

Anyways I have a word request.

I got home from work tonight and we have a snow storm here in Colorado. So I turned on some Christmas jazz and made a cup of Hot Cocoa. After watching tonight’s HotForWords, I was wondering where the word Cocoa came from? I know chocolate comes from the cocoa bean but I would like to know the origin of the word Cocoa.

    Thanks

    • And, Marina, you can throw marshmellow in there, too. And, as we all know, marshmellows rise to the top and float on the cocoa, so that means you have do marshmellow first.*

      —-
*Sorry, achsdu17, but you have been done in by physics, specifically, bouyancy. Bouyancy is that property which makes my words come before your words. Ask Captain Jack; he’ll tell you.

This show was very different- watch out Frank Miller!
Charles Schulz provided the Promethean spark
for my favorite cartoon- Charlie Brown.
    I’ve always liked the music.

  42. Marina, I just love how you analyze the word’s complete

ancestry and this past participle was fascinating  . Case

in point, “animare” meaning of to “give breathe to” is a great

analogy to what symbolizes animation. I just gotta believe

that is what every Disney, Warner Bros. animator were

thinking as they animated such classic characters like Mickey

Mouse, Donald & Daffy Duck, Porky & Goofy, and of course

your favorite wasically wabbit,Bugs Bunny  They were all

given their first breath of life by these dedicated caregivers of

who put a little of themseves into each piece of

animation. This is why you are the Dean of Philology:

you have a gift of breathing life to every word you

investigate!!  Regarding my homework,

my trusty friend and professor, my favorite cartoon growing

up was Winnie the Pooh and the original Ninja Turtles cartoon.

Now as days my taste have a grown a bit more sophicated,

with South Park, being my favorite piece of animation. Still, I

will never grow tire of Pooh’s honey cravings, Piglet’s fears or

    Tigger’s wild spirit.

P.S. Marina, I too will always love me some classic Looney

Toons and I wish I could have experience the joys you had

with “Nu Pogodi” but I bet it was an amazing animated

    show
    love, Doug

    • Your double-spacing set off my virus detector. You know the purpose of those things is to “read between the lines” of the software, and of course those were all blank. I received a letter of complaint from the little man in my PC, which was as cordial as can be, but he said he knew some very rude words, and if the spacing wasn’t stopped, I would be sorry.

    Spanish: “caliente para palabras”
    Welsh: “poeth dros geiriau”
French: “chaude pour mots” (Someone check this for me.)
Russian: “goriachaya …” better let Marina finish this one.

@Chacha, this was my post down yonder that neuroway left a response:

It’s a wonder I haven’t abandoned all my ideals; they seem so absurd and impractical. Yet I cling to them because I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart. It’s utterly impossible for me to build my life on a foundation of chaos, suffering and death. I see the world slowly transformed into a wilderness. I hear the approaching thunder that, one day, will destroy us too. I feel the suffering of millions. And yet, when I look up at the sky, I somehow feel that everything will change for the better, that this cruelty too shall end, that peace and tranquility will return once more.

Like I mentioned, it is not originally mine, but it does mirror my feelings at times. Who wrote it? :?:

    • bsomebody says: 84.1

Oh yeah, I still need a title for that paper below. :???:

    • neuroway says: 84.2

Very interestiing point you raised here, bsomebody.

I already read Tolstoi’s “War and Peace”.

But now I thing I need to read Fyodor Dostoevsky’s “Brothers Kamarazov”

Guys, I really think Marina is great. She’s the one dudes… Stick with her!!!! And let’s see what happens!!!

      • You are on the right track, but this is much more … straightforward reading.

      • Okay, you deserve to know. It was Anne Frank. When I think that a fifteen year old girl wrote that, it chills me.

      • Well, it doesn’t chill me at all. What she wrote is beautiful, even more when we think about the kind of world in which she was living. Although I must admit I tried once to read her diary, but couldn’t finish it (out of boredom I guess). But now that you make me think of it I guess I’ll go back in my library and open this book again. I think making fun of dead or living souls, or try to conceil the way they thought is a clear insult to their memory.

I could stand St Augustine’s confessions, though, although I didn’t like him a lot. Everybody is a product of his time. But sometimes it appears that there are some bugs on the production chain, and some people become kind of impermeable to the subliminal propaganda of the moment. Just like Augustine who wrote his confession and died while his city, Hippo, was besiedged by the Vandals. What he wrote, given the troubled times in which he lived, is simply remarkable.

    • Actually, you do observe the rules
of the jungle (you just don’t know it).
Rule #3 – Move with the herd.
      (safety in numbers)

  61. Evening, everybody. That was a cool vid, Dear Teach! All the neat stuff you and many of the HFW family do here is mighty impressive, particularly when I sit here asking myself questions like, “Duh, what’s a thread?”.
My favorite toons were Roadrunner, because when I was a kid roadrunners were abundant in our area, and Mighty Mouse, because the music was so kick-ass.
    Always.

  63. ironwolf says: 81

    Hey Marina

I really liked this one, very creative.

My question is where does the phrase,” Fair to middlin’ “, come from? I know it means that things are a little better than average; just above okay, but how did it originate?

    Thanks!

    • neuroway says: 81.1

      Ironwolf,

Your gravatar looks great, man. Well, at least, it has the “wolf” embedded in it, which is a good start!!!

But your gravatar is not as great as Marina’s, of coarse!

Good question of yours. Perhaps Marina can answer that?

“Fair to middin’” What does that mean? Mein Dame???

      • It’s middlin’ (short for middling). Fair to middlin’ means something (or oneself) is in a good state (said of health, etc.) as distinguished from poor/bad or extraordinary/outstanding. It is typically a rural phrase, and I feel safe in saying that it has not been uttered at a YouTube Live show.

Speaking of which, Marina, if anyone from the media gives you any lip, just say, “You’re slower than dial-up, aren’t you?” That’ll squelch ‘em. (It’s cool, it’s hip, it’s tech and you heard it here first.)

      • Simply put, I’ve tried on many different occassions to make a youtube account, it sets it up, let’s me watch videos, but when I send the verification to my e-mail to get subscriptions, it doesn’t work. I don’t put videos on youtube, the main reason I recently tried was to subscribe to Marina’s vids, and enter the contest.
I don’t really care bout fixin it, I still watch her new posts, and I love how she does things here,so no youtube subscription ability is really no problem 4 me. I just wanted to pass a message on to her wonderin if she could still maybe find a way for me to b in the contest.
PS: Also, tell her not 2 be angry please, I just really want 2 be in the running 4 a ringtone, she has the best voice I ever heard. If u could just get her 2 read this and pass on an answer to me, it would be fine. Either in comments or at the end of her next post.
Gracias Capman, u shall get the edible comment sandwich, what u want on it

I emailed Marina about your problem with YouTube I know her answer back is slow, but she gets a lot of mail. She emailed this back for you to try.

He needs to use an email service other than msn (hotmail) as they block all my emails as well.
Tell him to set up a “gmail” account and use that for both You Tube and for HotForWords site..

          Marina

          Hope this works for you.

          Mike

      • Any of you “fossils” ever read the old Tom Swift series back in the day?
Doubt anyone would know what a Swifty is anymore

Okay folks, I need some help for a title on my final paper for school. I argued that Thoreau’s ideas in his essay Civil Disobedience are very different from the ideas held in civil disobedience, today. I argued specifically that his ideas of violence, social change, and the ends justifying the means do not jive with today’s beliefs. My title is “Henry David Thoreau: Revolutionary or Misplaced Utopian,” but that sucks. I need a catchy title folks, and you have been nominated. Congratulations!

When I was younger, I was partial to the action cartoons. I liked the Super Friends, Spiderman and Fantastic Four.

There are 7 girls in a bus.
    Each girl has 7 backpacks.
In each backpack, there are 7 big cats.
For every big cat, there are 7 little cats.
Question: How many legs are there in the bus?

  80. Hi Marina, you asked me to remind you to start doing ringtones again after I asked you about them. Well this is my reminder. And for homework, my favorite cartoon was always The Ninja Turtles.

How about Sagacious, seems like a good solid request, and as far as cartoons go, I’d probably say DragonBall Z or Biker Mice from Mars

where does the expression “dah?” come from?

  90. nathan19 says: 48

    Hey Marina,

My favorite cartoons growing up were the Wile E. Coyote v. Roadrunner ones. Such a beautifully simple premise: a fierce predator coming up with one outlandish tactic after another to catch as simple a prey as a roadrunner. Bugs Bunny was really good too, though. I especially liked the episode where he does a sort of opera thing with Elmer Fudd.
