1980 was a year of upheaval and change. I was not yet a teenager at that time, and the Cold War was a powerful reality. Nuclear annihilation was our darkest fear as the Russian Premier Leonid Brezhnev was one scary looking character, and the US was shifting from President Jimmy Carter (often seen as weak on defense) to Ronald Reagan (feared to be a warmonger). The Iranian Embassy hostages were still being held by the Ayatollah Khomeini’s government, and the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. Mt. St. Helens erupted violently, as did war between Iraq and Iran. The brutal and ousted Nicaraguan dictator Somoza was assassinated, as was the peaceful and poetic former member of the Beatles, John Lennon.
But 1980 ushered in a decade of accomplishment as well… the eradication of smallpox, the launch of the first shuttle mission (Columbia), the first woman as a Supreme Justice (O’Connor), and the first woman as a Presidential candidate (Ferraro). Not to mention Marina was born…
In 1980 a gallon of gas was about $1.20, the average price of a new car was $7,200.00, a new home’s average cost was $69,000.00, and a gallon of milk was $1.70
My parents did their best to calm my fears concerning “the Soviet threat.” They had visited the Soviet Union in 1976 and had greatly enjoyed their trip and the people they met. Dad found the people quite friendly, engaging, and curious about the world. Mother liked the people, but desperately wanted to get back to a crystal factory in Sweden (Boda, I think). My father, with a mix of Amerind and European ancestry, balding, and sporting a Van Dyke, was a welcome guest wherever he went… because he looked just like Lenin. In fact, people in Moscow and St. Petersburg shouted “Lenin!” and pointed at my father frequently. Somewhere in my stacks of old photos, I have a picture of him in Red Square posing next to a statue of Lenin. I still have my balalaika, a gift from my parents when they returned.
In the year Marina turned four, one of my favorite books was published… the Tom Clancy classic, The Hunt for Red October. In 1990, just prior to the first Gulf War, the movie adaptation of that book was released starring Sean Connery… who, in the movie, was the spitting image of my maternal grandfather. The movie began with a hauntingly beautiful “tribute of the people” entitled “the Hymn of the Red October.” It is the only “Russian” music I have ever heard and I was quite impressed.
Marina would have been 8 or 9 when the Berlin wall came down, and the changes began that formed the Russian Republic, as well as the reunification of Germany. But perhaps she remembers the old days of the CCCP? Does she remember the anthems? Do they linger in her memory? Perhaps the Hymn of the Red October will stir her heart in remembrance of a life long ago?

The reason it is the same on your computer is because your browser cache is not being updated. Clear your browser cache, and then refresh the page, or just close your browser, then bring it back up again. You will see the what looks like a pussn’ boots type character. You had a Rambo type character before which is on the gravatar wall. Did you see your gravatar on the wall?
I tried all that but doesn’t seem to work, I’ll just change back. The original character was Jim Raynor from the game STARCRAFT, the second one was another character from Warcraft. I’m a total nerd.

Che. Love the taco top ten list! I eat tacos every Tuesday when I can. I’m not talking about that American crap, but the authentic tacos that I can get on those roach coaches around town.
