No matter what the origin of the word, shopping is still hell. I think I can relate more to the prison origin.

  2. pandion says: 111

I like shopping, and will be doing just a bit more later tonight. Because during a phone conversation earlier today I said,
    “She is coming too?”
I am always the last to know these things.

  3. The tickle me Elmo dolls are becoming so complex that the next generation of Elmo will be able to stand upright and walk around on it’s own. Mothers may decide to skip having babies and just go with an Elmo for that nurturing companionship that a newborn is able to help provide for a momma. In a few years tickle me Elmo will be able to do all the shopping, make the grocery list, call and make your appointments, basic household chores, etc.

  4. Beautiful, Dear Teach. (So was the lesson.) It’s great to see Gorby “feeling his oats”, too.
Personally, I loathe shopping, except for shopping for my loved ones during times like Christmas or birthdays or other special occasions.
It’s ironic, since I’m probably the biggest “computer virgin” who regularly visits HFW, but I’m not experiencing any of the problems viewing lessons or posting comments that many of the family are. Don’t have a clue why that is(naturally), but I just thought it might be helpful somehow for you to know. I’m on a new HP laptop that has all the “bells and whistles”, but nothing exotic.
Thanks for all you do for us.
    Always.
    Always.

I want to show some love for a family of cuddly, yet under-appreciated words, namely the “ub” words. Bub, cub, chub, club, dub, drub, flub, gub*, glub**, grub, hub, nub, pub, rub, sub, scrub, slub, snub, stub, and tub.

*Gub isn’t really a word, but it’s used in a bank robbery scene in the Woody Allen movie, Bananas.

**Glub isn’t really a word, either. It’s the sound of a cartoon character drowning.

    Hi Marina,

I’ve noticed a lot of grim faces this holiday season, lots of people saying they wish Christmas was already over so I would like to request the word “Humbug”. Perhaps it will remind people why they should be making merry this season and hopefully change the heart of a few Scrooges out there.

    Thanks!

  27. Hello Marina! I’d like to know about the word “Pálinka”. It’s a Hungarian word for a Hungarian drink, that’s all I know. When I was in Hungary, I drank a bottle of Pálinka. This drink was very toothsome.

Shopping is one of my absolute least favorite things. I like buying stuff, but I always have a plan, get in and get out. It is funny, though; I can spend all day at a museum or some exhibits. I have a blast, and time just flies on by. When we go shopping, Mrs. Somebody leaves me behind. At a museum, she drags along. We just do not synch on this.

  31. Hi Marina, I would like to know the origin of the word “zeitgeist”

Being a big Smashing Pumpkin fan, I was excited to hear they reformed. They named their latest album Zeitgeist. After this, I heard and seen in TV, and other places.

    Marina,

Since we’re in the holiday season, could you please explain the word “Festivus.” Festivus is the non-denominational holiday celebrated on December 23rd. Was it really invented by Seinfeld? Thank you!

    • nathan19 says: 75.1

Yes, Festivus was a creation of Seinfeld. I don’t know how familiar you are with the show, but it the story behind Festivus goes thusly: when he was young, one of the main characters, George Costanza’s father–Frank Costanza–was shopping for a gift for his son. He found what he was looking for at the same time someone else did, and they got into a fight over who would get to buy the toy. While he was fighting the guy, Frank got the idea to invent an entirely new holiday. And so, Festivus was born. It’s celebrated with a large metal pole being set up in lieu of a Christmas tree, everyone in the family getting together and talking about how everyone else disappointed them in the previous year, and a wrestling match dubbed the “Feats of Strength.”

  38. There’s some gift card scam going around so be careful. Scammers will photo the bar code #’s off of gift cards then place the gift cards back on the rack then when someone who actually goes shopping for gift cards and picks up a gift card and purchases it, they may not know a scammer could be checking online for that gift card # to start scam spending their money by punching in #’s from photos taken on a camera phone

    Hi Marina

I am searching for the word Kutun, which I understand in Turkish or Persian means cotton.

This is my family name and my Grandfather immigrated to USA from Odessa Russia.

I can find no surname in Russia of Kutun, only Turkey.

    What is up?

    William

    • Evan Owen says: 66.1

      ***Kibitz comment on “Cotton”***
The Spanish for “cotton” is “algodón,” which is borrowed from the Moorish Arabic “al-godón.”

Mr. Kutun, if my memory serves right, there were Turks who lived in the region around Odessa, and later the Russians exiled them. This might relate somehow to your family history.

  45. jindai says: 65

    Marina,
I thought the little (annoying) balloon that says “HD” was an OPTION, so that if one wants HD, one can click, and go the the HD content. It seems your content is currently ALL HD, which is NOT what I wish for. It slows my system down unreasonably, and I’m afraid I’ll stop coming here if it keeps being this annoying and resource intensive. Please be the kind teacher that I know you are and offer an option to standard OR HD, not JUST HD?

    • hmm , i had this problem too . Maybe you could take ur computer apart and clean up the dust inside . I just cleaned mine yesterday . It seems like the dust clogging the CPU slowed my computer

    • Marina says: 65.2

Well, I can make the videos play in only high quality, not High Def on this website if it’s really a problem. I was excited that I could embed in High Def on the website as well, so I did so.

But if it prevents a bunch of you from watching the videos.. then I can go back to the lower quality.

      • John says: 65.2.1

Marina this guy wants you really bad seogeneva see his post down below.

      • I can only watch on YT. It slows my system down too. I think it has to do with the age of my computer (7 years hint hint  ) or the connection speed.

      • Could a YouTube subscriber use their personal settings?

Example of YT user account playback settings.

        Video Playback Quality

Choose the default setting for viewing videos

○Choose my video quality dynamically based on the current connection speed.
○I have a slow connection. Never play higher-quality video.
⨀I have a fast connection. Always play higher-quality video when it’s available.

Also I can no longer play HD videos. The last HD lesson I watch was “Ponzi Scheme in HD” Now when I watch the same video it only play in some other format. I don’t have a clue what YT is up to now. They like to change things and not communicate this to the users.

      • jindai says: 65.2.4

That would be appreciated, by me, for sure. My system is not a gaming rig, so high video settings stutter when loaded. Even worse, the HD filesize is so large, I have to preload the video to even start watching it, I cannot truly stream it. And I KNOW I have the fastest connection without paying for the Turbo package. (Well over 6MBps) And with your regularly-issued content (don’t get me wrong, I love it) the kind of bandwidth I’d be using for all HD, even if I could play it cleanly, would certainly prompt my cable provider to limit my usage, as they’ve been contemplating already.(And for Mr. Snark, there, dust will not cause, nor cleaning said dust up solve, the kinds of problems described here. Please try and be real.)

        • Hello jindai,
I hope the following may assist you in having a better video experience.

My system is a plain vanilla Windows (1 GB RAM, 2.8 GHz) and I am not a gamer and do not have a gamer rig. My system is almost two years old and it is extremely fast and have zero video issues.

          Here is why.
          1. I spent $45 on an AGP 256 MB video card. (critical)
          2. I only have 1 GB total RAM in my system.
          3. I run NO Anti-Virus of any kind and have ZERO infections, because I do not use Outlook nor MSIE.
I do use two firewalls (hardware and software)
          4. My DSL is 3 Mb/s and I could get 6 Mb/s if I wanted to, but don’t need it.
          5. I do video editing, uploads, downloads etc with zero problems.
          6. My task manager shows less than 30 programs running. I know many people that have 60 or more programs running that will slow a system down to a crawl.

          I hope that helps you.
Message me on YT or Twitter if you need any assistance.
          Same user name.

          • There is no freaking way I’d EVER run any system without A/V software. You have to be crazy in this world to do so. Seeing as how I find you crazy for just that, it’s impossible to respect any other advice you’d ever offer.
That said, if you want to run a system with only a few programs running, that’s your prerogative. My system is optimized to the way *I* like to run it, and I’m not changing it around to suit ONE podcast from all the ones I do watch and/or listen to. Podcasts are a diversion, NOT what I do for work, or even for serious play.
I do enjoy HotforWords, but I’m not stripping my system of protection, or any of my running programs, or buying new hardware just for that. And for you to advise that shows not only that you are crazy, but that your priorities are WAY out of whack.

Thanks for your input, however. It have me a nice laugh, if nothing else.

        • Hello jindai,

Actually, all of my professional tech friends run their personal systems w/o AV software. You can Google it also and see how many tech professionals do that. We have other ways of detecting invasions, but merely following certain rules is actually sufficient, which I have demonstrated for the non-tech people that I support locally.

If you are not comfortable w/o AV, that is fine, and my intent was to demonstrate capability in terms of what is possible with a medium to low end system, all things being equal.

        • Hello jindai,
While banter and razzing are customary on the HFW site, flaming is not.

          • I’m sorry Evan Owen, if you felt there were flames coming from my keyboard toward anyone. If you read it again, you’ll notice that I said it gave me a laugh, at least. I don’t know about you, but I LIKE laughing, and from that, you should understand that nothing I said was intended as a straight-to-the-heart insult. I do find anyone that walks the streets of the Tenderloin without so much as an alarm whistle crazy, and that feeling applies to anyone that uses the web without A/V. I don’t think they need to be medicated or committed, per se, but I do think they need, at the very least, further education. But I find calling someone stupid more insulting than calling them crazy, so I chose the latter. If you disagree, then you can call them uneducated or any other term you find more acceptable, but I’ll stick with my light humor and terms I use now, thanks. And yes, this is all intended, just like before, as banter.

        • Jindai, I too don’t run any AV software on my computer either. Once a year I will do a quick scan but most allways turns up negative. I know a little bit about how viruses are written, I wrote my first one in high school, so I’m not any kind of noob on this subject. Now guess what kind of OS I’m running that eliminates all my fears of getting a virus?

So you say “You have to be crazy in this world to do so. Seeing as how I find you crazy for just that, it’s impossible to respect any other advice you’d ever offer.” I see it as people are crazy to run windows. Yeah people are entrap into using an inferior OS. In time that will change.

          • Well, Cap’n Jack, I hear you, and to some extent I agree. Windows is the most targeted system on the planet, and it has its share of problems, there’s no disputing that. And I’ll even accept that it may be a bit crazy to run a system with it, Crazy like a fox, that is. I find it far more intelligent than crazy to run the OS that runs on 90% of the world’s machines, the OS that 95% of written programs and games, (that are written for computers, vice consoles) are compatible with, or outright written for. Linux servers are even losing ground to MS servers, to the point that they are in the minority, now. So I don’t see the pendulam swinging away from MS any time soon. As you see, I do dispute your implication that someday, Linux, or MacOS,. or any other OS will take over the world market. MS, love it nor not, is here to stay, and no amount of hating will change that.
So, the math goes like this. it’s 5% crazy to run Windows, and 95% intelligent. Works for me, to not be left behind.
That said, since I do run windows, I also run A/V software (re:targeted system) as any intelligent person will. That you don’t, I so proud of you, but then, you don’t run the OS that’s targeted, do you? You run the one that is home to the attackers, right?

            Later

      • Personally, though the highest quality you offer IS significantly better, it wouldn’t hurt my feelings to have it posted in a lower quality format with the option to upgrade for those who wish for hi-res or hi-def. This way anyone who logs in can see the vid, and those who want the hi-def/hi-res can click to upgrade, perhaps until a toggle like CaptainJack suggests can be installed here.

You’re gorgeous in any resolution!

    Word Request: Gift/Giving

    Your Student,
    ThoughtOnFire

    • Marina says: 58.1

I enjoy buying for others as well for some reason :-)

    • Marina says: 58.2

thoughtonfire, you just made me think of the expression “Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth”..

When does anybody ever say gift horse? Here is my gift car… I like my gift computer!

Cool.. gonna do that expression! Thanks for making me think of it.. I’ll credit you of course :-)

      • Marina says: 58.2.1

Am I right about that? Or do people often put the word gift in front of other nouns? If they do, it may have been as a result of the influence of the “gift horse” expression.

I know of gift card.. but that’s a card that goes along with a gift, so it doesn’t count.

        • Does the “gift horse expression tie into the other expression “being a little long in the tooth” somehow? :???:

        • Gift Basket, Gift Box, Gift Ideas, Gift Certificates,Gift Bags
          Need any more?

        • Marina, Che’s right in that there are a few words that comprise “gift” in front of a noun, like gift box, gift card, et al., but they don’t have the same connotation as gift horse: that’s really the only word of its kind [that I know of, at least]. What I mean to say is, the wording of “gift horse” in the phrase we’re talking about is unique. It’s not like there are any other phrases that say, “Don’t [do whatever to] a gift [random noun] in the face [or whatever].”

I hope this helps: I’m really bad at explaining things sometimes.

        • gift of the gab…gifted power of speech and fruit cake(word request)

        • Can I take a crack at this? My dad used to own 2 horses. I remember him using the term. I think the saying means, don’t further examine a horse mouth to determine its value. You can look at a horses teeth to discover it’s approximate age.

Sad thing about values of the masses today is people grade you by how much money you spend on them.

      • Bob says: 58.2.2

I can’t say that I’ve heard people saying gift-xxxx in any connection other than gift-horse and gift-card; having said that, I shall probably hear it a dozen times within the next week.
However, I think people would be more likely to say, “here is my new car” or “here is my new computer”, and only reveal that it was a gift if asked where they bought it.
I don’t know if that reveals anything about human nature or not. :???:

    • Warren says: 58.3

      Hello thoughtonfire,
I feel the same way as far as buying for others. I’m a bit too generous at times. Some people try and take advantage of my generosity and that seems rude to me but doesn’t stop me. I try and help more than just buy things for others. I guess all year long is the time for giving as far as I’m concerned.

If you succeed in your bid, can I get a place in the HFW Old Folks Home in St.Tropez.
I used to live there and know my way around, I’m still able-bodied (more or less) and could look after the HFW yacht and pied-dans-l’eau.
Whilst you are considering my application, save some of those raspberries for me. (The fruit, not the sound. )

    Hey Marina,

No, I really don’t like to shop. I think going out and buying stuff as you need it is all well and good, but there’s really no point in going out and looking for stuff when you really don’t need anything.

Also, thanks for the holiday pre-card.

Since it’s fairly common to say, I was wondering about the origin of the word ‘Gosh’ and how did it mean to replace God as a softer way to say ‘Oh my God!’

  57. ronny says: 49

What is the origin of the word ballyhoo!
Wikipedia states “The ballyhoo or bally, Hemiramphus brasiliensis, is a baitfish of the halfbeak family (Hemiramphidae). It is similar to the Balao halfbeak (Hemiramphus balao). Ballyhoo are frequently used as cut bait and for trolling purposes by saltwater sportsmen. A big variety of fish love ballyhoo. It is one of the greatest known fish to catch Sailfish on.

Ballyhoo is also used in colloquial American English to refer to brashness or flamboyance. The term Ballyhoo is used to indicate that one is using any means necessary to inflate an object or idea to a status to which it does not rise. This references the bait fish in that selling ballyhoo requires deceitful advertising.

I would like to the the origins of the colloquial American English use of the word.

    Thanks a bunch.

Dear совершенная Marina, Thank you, I got your “Pre-Holiday Card” yesterday. You are so beautiful in that photo. I printed a copy of your photo and I think of it as a Christmas present from you!
I read about Christmas in Russia and learned that “Father Frost” (заморозок отца) gives out presents on January 7th. There also is a “Babushka” (Grandmother) who gives presents to children. So, on January 7th, I hope to send you something nice to respect your Christmas traditions from Russia. Even those who are cheap might say “Merry Christmas to you on January 7th!
Yes, I enjoy shopping. I was wise enough to do all my Christmas shopping early. The malls are packed these days! I’ve never been shopping in Beverly Hills, though. I wonder if Rodeo Drive is like that movie, Pretty Woman? It’s really easier to shop via Internet and get home delivery. The shipping charges usually aren’t as bad as the cost to drive to the stores and back! Do you still go shopping via piggyback? What a nice way to earn two dollars!
Clever of you to add a video of a fan who endorses your calendar. The only missing phrase is the statement that “supplies are limited.” They might not print any more after the first edition is sold out!
    Your dear student, seesixcm6

That and shoes, I think I have a real problem with shoes. Hold on, let me go see…ya, I do. I counted 37 pairs of shoes. Mostly “skate” type but theres a little of everything in there.
So how many pairs of shoes do you have?

  77. orion_ss1 says: 28

Since I do the cooking at home I have to do the grocery shopping but I could do without it. Most of the rest of the things I buy I get on-line; mostly books, CDs, and DVDs. When I hove to go into a store I have something in mind. I try to get it and get out.

Seeing something is not the same as needing it.

Hello Marina, great video as always. :) But now I have a word request, as a I struggle with a little conundrum.

What is the origin of the word ‘vexing’ as in finding something vexing or being vexed by something?

Intuitively, the word could be related to a fixation or to a hex, which is related to witches.

Do either of those have a connection to the origin of ‘vexing’? Is there more to the origin than I would expect?

    It vexes me.

  82. i like to shop when i’m with the right person and in the right mood…when i’m by myself, i like to “get it & go”…

now, i’m thinking i prolly wouldn’t be shopping where you shop, Marina…but i’d enjoy the trip…

  86. Warren says: 19

    Hello Marina,
I just caught up on this weeks shows- wow- what an excellent week you’ve had.
I see Gorby is healthy once again and getting into the video while you’re recording. Shopping I avoid as much as possible. The main reason is when I go into a store or mall I always leave with some things that I didn’t plan on getting and I always feel like I wasted time and money. Unless it’s a book store then when I leave I feel like I it was time and money well spent.
WORD REQUEST: Trend (several meanings), Trendsetter (like you).
    Also, Glitch
    Thank you
    p.s.
Do you plan on investigating the word “cliche”? I think several students have an interest in this word and I’d like to get in on the word request wagon.

I enjoy the interacting with the shop keepers when I travel.
    So I enjoy that shopping.
At home, I just go get what I need.

  89. John says: 16

Shopping to me at this time of year is only important for shop keepers. I don’t mind shopping some but shopping can get boring for me fairly quickly. Most of my shopping consists of tech stuff or if general shopping I will first scout out the things I am interested in then gather them all up and head to the checkout lane thus relieving myself of the burden of having to look at everything on the shelves. I am sure this upsets the retailers, like wal-mart and k-mart and target because statics show the longer they can keep you looking the more they sale. In other words most of the time i have a general idea of what I’m going to buy the problem is just locating the item for the that fulfills the requirements and getting it to the checkout line.

Word Request : “checkout” as in checkout line, shouldn’t it be more correctly called a purchase line?

bigbhd95 says “It seems to me (in my mind anyway) Women go
“SHOPPING” Men go to BUY” is to me women go to see all the options men actually go to acquire when they shop.

Marina, since new president will be sworn in next month  . can you tell us the origin of the word “Inaugurate”. Thanks and Merry Christmas!

  94. Bob says: 11

Most people like to shop for themselves.
I agree with bigbhd95 in that women tend to enjoy the experience of shopping, whereas men suffer shopping for the gratification of getting new toys.
For this reason, I think men and women should rarely go shopping together. Women have to try on every outfit and pair of shoes in the store, hold every bag and admire themselves in the mirror, squeeze every fruit on the stall and pick up every packet on the shelves when they shop.
Most men, like me, research the products specification and decide what they want, make a list and go to collect the chosen items in the least possible time. That’s why I hate going shopping with my wife and hate it when the supermarket changes the shelves around every week, so you never know where to find things.
But the all time best way to shop is the way the rich people do it. If you ever come to the UK, Marina, you should make an appointment for a private shopping evening at Harrods in London. They will sit you down in a comfortable lounge, provide you with Champagne and Canapés, and the store assistants will run off around the store and bring everything to you for you to try and choose. It certainly beats trudging around yourself, getting backache from lugging your purchases with you and getting swollen feet.

  95. Yes… I like shopping for new tools!

Are you using all 90% of the machines in the world? Of course not. :-)
That number is meaningless. “95% of written…” thats no longer correct anymore. It’s hovering around 87% now and slowly dropping. Recently Windows Vista influenced that number.
Your right that MS is not going away tomorrow. I do see their market share decreasing at a rapid rate.
Their is noting in my last statement saying that I’m hating MS. I have windows installed on one of my hard drives. I don’t use any A/V on that drive either. With that said its good that you run an A/V software on you computer. I would if it was my primary OS.
“You run the one that is home to the attackers, right?” All OSes are home to attackers. ;-)
