  1. Marina, you are my heroin! My favorite Lollipop is The cherry Tootsie Pop, when i was a kid i loved Charms Blowpops, apple flavored.

I think i disagree with the full circle of the naming of candy on a stick.

There is a branch of linguistics dedicated to the innate use of words. That somehow human beings who share a language family, or language for that matter, use the same or similar sounds for words that have similar meanings. Ex. glisten, glitter, gloria, glad. Ex lolly, lengua, language, lambaste, lick, lap[up],

just writing without thinking here, sorry for lack of articulation.

  2. it says 1900’s on the screen, but the audio says 1800’s, just a little fyi.

    ps, my hero.

    hey tjere,

i’ve just stumbled upon your show on youtube and automaticaly became a fan. i’m no philologist, but i’m also BurningForWords ;) .
i’m from portugal so english is not my main language and this could be a fairly easy word. nonetheless, here’s a suggestion for you:

what’s the origin of the word Fiend (not friend)?

    cheers,
    sam

    • leonard says: 124.1

      jsnl85-I would like some philology on the same word request [fiend]…Portuguese wines are the best. :lol: Even if Madeira is considered of Africa…[Continental]:-}

      • jsnl85 says: 124.1.1

        haha
there are also great wines from continental portugal!
they’re among the best in the world ;)
i think our best wines are from around the area of the Douro river (where i have my own vineyards :p)

btw, etymologically speaking, “Douro river” stands for “river of gold” in english ;)

        cheers

Cherry red is by far and away the epitomy of suckers and almasy any hard candy wich has a red version,,,,,altho,,,some sweet/sour suckers are quite tastety. Sweet Baby Jane comes to mind,She wasn’t cherry, could be sweet or sour, but, always a great great great sucker.

My favorite lollipop is a tootsie pop.

  9. I bet captains and sea faring gents say encompassing more than your average civilians do, which seems like cool dialect to me. I got a bag of jelly belly candies as a gift for the holidays and ate too much and got a belly ache and coz I don’t hardly ever ingest that many sugars at once it nearly made me nauseous so I doubt I will be gorging myself like a hog on sweets for a while. Something exciting for me happened after I watched hotforword’s lesson on lollipop, I learned a new word- “Lolliologist”~ A person who is an expertise in the art of lollipop making

  10. Oh Marina. LMSAO! Oh your so very entertaining to watch!

Homework: I don’t care for suckers. I’m not really into that kind of candy that much. Gourmet Jelly Beans, Mike and Ike’s, or Red Vines. I always have to have chocolate around. Not milk chocolate though. My body doesn’t like the pesticides in milk products.

That was a very interesting etymology. I wonder how many other words have encompassing origins?

  17. you have to do another women’s dictionary….

but if not, can you explain the difference between an insurgency and a militia? it would be awsome to site you in a history paper

  18. James says: 111

Marina, I have sorted out the forum. You will need a whole new HTML and CSS sheet which I have got. All you need to do is paste. The only difference (apart from pages) is that the text is black but when you hover over a link, its green. also it may decide it wants to start going stupid again. You won’t find out until people post new pages. If it does tell me and I will tell you how to fix it. But as of now its 100% how you asked.

Can I email you on the wordlove-108 address from hotmail because of the 2000 chracter limit on the website? then I can just paste the codes or send them as .txt attachments

  19. James says: 110

  25. neuroway says: 104

Lollipop, banana, carrot. They all have a common denominator. What’s interesting though is the round-robin dimension of the lollipop becoming a horse, then the horse becoming a lollipop. I suppose Lolly Pop the horse, probably one of these quite temperamental thoroughbreds, was Smith’s favourite only because he could make a dazzling jackrabbit start from the stalls and then run like hell in circle for a short period of time. But what could make this horse run around on a track like this? Carrots and sticks? Candies? I don’t think so. Breed and bood most likely. Or the inner drive.

Quote: My horses are extremely valuable, worth far more than slaves. They are so smart that they could drive themselves. They don’t even need the yoke.

hi marina i want some information about kickboxing

thanks for the lesson of karate

  27. Marina, excellent lesson!!
This lesson kind of reminded me of an earlier lesson which alluded to the opposite type of backward fitting false etymology or backronym.

I wonder if there is a word that describes the type of coincidental forward fitting type of etymology of a word.

I enjoyed watching the graphics demonstrating completing the full circle for the naming of the word lollipop.

Hello Dear Marina and Hotforwordists, I called my dog Lollipop but my intention was first to call her Oulipo (pronounce Ooleepo) which means “Ouvroir de littérature potentielle” which means roughly as stated by Wikipedia “workshop of potential literature”… I still wonder how I slipped from Oulipo to Lollipop ? Anyway many thanks Hotforwords for this reference it allowed me to discover this lovelly group “the Chordettes” singing oH Lollipop Lolli lolli… You can find the link hereafter to hear these wonderfull voices who maybe was competitors of the other well known feminine group The Andrew Sisters in the fifties : http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xn3m2_the-chordettes-lollipop_music -

  33. James says: 96

Marina, I don’t know if you know this, but blockquote isn’t working.

    • Hello James, Marina,
The BLOCKQUOTE is working as the proper indentation and line insertion does occur. It is just not being rendered with attributes to be seen.

A quick fix is to add the CSS code for a blockquote.
Here is an example which I placed into the
edit-comments.css file. (That may not be the proper file to place the CSS into?)

      blockquote {
      background-color:#f0f0f0;
      border:1px solid blue;
      border-style:outset;
      }

Obviously, you can chose from a myriad of attributes
      to suit your visual taste.

    Hey hE hE, My horrorscope(horoscope)

    December 26
You may be getting frustrated with love and romance, dear Sagittarius, because they seem to be causing more tension than calm and relaxation. No one said love was easy, but it doesn’t have to be completely miserable, either. The key is to not get too stressed out about the little things. Know and expect that not everything is going to exactly match your highest expectations. There are many aspects of a relationship you simply cannot control – namely, the other person.

Captain Jack, Capman, Melikadothechacha, and Pedantickarl (I think that is all of them) put in alot of time and energy, and I reap the fruits of their labor. 67. I like watermelon lollipops… and also cherry.

  68. bsomebody says: 57

I do not remeber what they were called, but they were pretty big lollipops. They were only about 2″ across, but about 1/2 or 3/4″ thick. My favorite was sour apple. Just sour enough to notice, but it would not turn your face inside out.

When I worked out in So Cal, people would bring in their homemade Mexican candy. It has a very different taste, and I never did get used to it. Real Mexican enchiladas, though, mighty yummy!

  69. Marina said there was a tale going around coz if there was a tail going around I’d ask if someone could close the curtains just in case any neighbors happen to walk by this way  Wouldn’t want to alarm the neighbors

I have “aspergers” I think it’s made up tbh.

But then again I have ADHD so I do things like this!

ubfsrhf brusbjf kbrn fjh rsdoufj ejfh hh

      • I had it when I was younger and take meds today for being bipolar. It’s runs in families so there is no shame in having a problem like this. Most of the time I am happy and everything goes just fine then something can trigger a sadness part and I am down in the dumps for days. Bob and BillyB has helped me a lot on when I first came on here to control the anger issues I have with this problem even though they don’t know unless they read this comment. A lot of people suffer from one form or the other of this condition, but don’t realize it until a teacher or a parent or a doctor diagnoses the problem. Some don’t want to admit they have a problem. I didn’t find out until I was in my late 30 about my problem as doctors and parents didn’t know what to look for when I was young. I thought I was just an angry person all the time. I am not ashamed of it so you shouldn’t be either. So your not alone James. I’ll help you any way I can.

        • I think compared to a years ago. Everything has to have something to explain it. If I went down the street 100 years ago and said ” I like how this street is paved” people wouldn’t care but if you were to do that now you would be classified as everything. I believe ADHD is real but aspergers is just a lever people can use to describe some peoples unusual behaviours. Scientists have to know everything and can’t handle not knowing something. TBH I think it means you are just a bit dopey. I have been on tablets since I was 4 … and they haven’t really done much

          • Maybe it’s time to change the meds. Some like Ritalin wear off and don’t work well after a few years. There are other meds to try that may work better. You may not like trial and error, but sometimes you have to just try. I wasn’t on the right meds at first but now I am happy and pretty much have it under control. I still have an occasional flare up as you remember back in another video where I jumped at Marina and fussed her out. I felt so bad after that and wanted to quit, but Marina, Bob and BillyB helped me through it so I will stay away from a confrontation if at all possible, but I do have my limitations and will stand up to a troll or bully. Yea scientist or Doctors have to have a name for everything. So shrug off the label they put on you and continue to do the great work behind the scenes for Marina and the videos that you make. You are well appreciated on here James.

  76. News: Pope agrees contraceptives are OK for use with animals.

The coincidental-circle theory holds only if it can be shown that Smith never heard of the European use of the word. It would be impossible to state with certaintly that a given person never heard of a given word, wouldn’t it? Perhaps there is some anecdotal evidence — an interview with Smith, a relative, colleage, etc. of his — that makes the assertion that there was no connection between the candies except via the horse, but how could you know it was true? So, to state that the theory is absolutely true is to wear blinders (heehee).

To rate this theory, I have come up with a new epithet: HORSE CANDY! So, from now on, if an etymological theory strains credulity (such as “Desparate Rick” = “Dick”), it will be said to be HC.

My favorite lollipop would be jolly rancher green apple

  87. wibble321 says: 36

Or, if you’re living in England there’s no need for a horse.

Lollipop. The word lollipop is first recorded in 1784,
in a January issue of the London Chronicle
    http://www.foodtimeline.org/foodcandy.html#lollipops

Dear совершенная Marina, You are beautiful when you wear red! Just a few more inches of cleavage on that dress and it would reach your bellybutton!
I don’t like lollipops because they are very bad for your teeth. I avoid them and most other candies except for chocolate, and I try to limit chocolate.
As for lollys, I like my own best, but next to that, I’d like yours!
    С влюбленностью к Марине. seesixcm6

I’d like to know the true origins of the word tattoo. I’ve heard several possible and a few not so possible, so maybe you can set the record straight.

Gorby playing with his toy sounds like bed springs squeeking.

Or is Gorby the director and telling you to bounce on the bed?

  91. jindai says: 32

    Lollipop lollipop
    Oh lolli lolli lolli
    Lollipop lollipop…..

    Call my baby lollipop
    Tell you why
Her kiss is sweeter than an apple pie
And when she does her shaky rockin’ dance
    Man, I haven’t got a chance

    I call her
    Lollipop lollipop
    Oh lolli lolli lolli
    Lollipop lollipop…..

Sweeter than candy on a stick
    Huckleberry, chimry or lime
    If you had a choice
    She’d be your pick
    But lollipop is mine

    Lollipop lollipop
    Oh lolli lolli lolli
    Lollipop lollipop…..

    Crazy way she thrills me
    Tell you why
Just like a lightning from the sky
She loves to kiss me till I can’t see straight
    GEE, MY LOLLIPOP IS GREAT

    I call her
    Lollipop lollipop
    Oh lolli lolli lolli
    Lollipop lollipop…

  98. Che Volay says: 23

Yes I knew a girl named Lolly, she was Swedish but if I told this story no one would believe me. So you’ll have to wait until I publish my memoirs.

  99. That was funny; the allusion to “tail going around”.

    At 0:29, Marina says:
“There is a tale going around,
that the lollipop was named after a horse.”
That just struck my funny bone.

I haven’t seen them in a while but I used to love the shredded coconut covered in chocolate. They were always available around Easter but I haven’t seen them in a few years.

If no one stopped me I could eat a bag of Nestles Crunch bars at one sitting. I guess its the crispy rice inside.

Third favorite is a peanutbutter cup.

I’d probably make a frownyface at almost any other kind of candy.

  103. Bob says: 15

I don’t like sweets, except dark chocolate, so it would have to be an Ice Lolly or preferably Lolly.

If English is not your first language, we have people who can read & translate Spanish, Russian, French, German (I think), and…hm…Welsh of course. Plus other languages I may not have seen here yet.
Also we have a “hotforwords addiction support group” here, just ask for help if you need it!

    Present,
My favorite lollipop are the ones called Safety Pop, they have a soft flexible loop handle instead of a stick. The flavor of these pops are unique.

I have not seen them around in years.
