Maybe detectives were called dicks because they were cocky.

Oh dude, I get those names too. And Jack is short for John, an oddity I’ll never get. What is it with these nicknames? I agree with Satchmo, why does William have so many nicknames, and why do so many words use the word Bill? Where does it come from?
Beck and Call
Honestly, I think I am at someone’s beck and call. The one time I recall this expression is from some literature. (It is at the beck and call of its master).
Macadamia Nut
Personally, I think they taste okay, but I don’t like them too much.
Peruse
I love to read for fun, or atleast I did, but sometimes things make it hard to do so. (For the record, Walter Dean Myers is fun to read. His book “Monster” was amazing).
