  2. Ok with sabotage. What about propaganda? Is it an interesting origin?

  3. nitebug says: 112

The only thing I remember sabotaaging was my tie at a gas station I worked at. The new company who bought us made us start wearing ties with the uniform. My last night there I wiped the storage tank measuring stick with the tie a lit it in the back room of the station.

We don’t usually discuss politics on these pages, but I do want to commend your government for the role they are playing in the current crisis. Turkey is a Muslim country that acknowledges Israel’s right to exist, but is acting to curb Israel’s excesses in Gaza and try to negotiate a cease-fire. Best of luck to you.

Interesting: by your translation, what you told your students to do in 2009 was ’sabotage donkey’; but this investigation makes the instructions more ‘cram the noisemaker full’ so far. We’ll see what else we find out.

I’m sure there are quite a few things I’ve sabotaged (including ‘my chances’), but “gentlemen don’t tell.”

Hey Marina, I’m not sure if you have it (I mean I checked but didn’t see it) but its a really common word we all say and yet it’s not good if you have a reason to say it: ” Sorry”
Correct me if I’m mistaking but I don’t think there is a video about that word (sorry in advanced if there is one I’m still new and trying to catch up  )

  15. dvallx says: 97

Marina – are you trying to “sabotage” our Canadian pronunciation (with the French inflection) by making fun of our mutual (Canadian) buddy William Shatner?

Apparently, WordPress has some indirect support for previewing comments (clickable link) (albeit with some bug reports (clickable link)). Although the HotForWords site supports editing comments for a few minutes, it would be nice if it supported previewing comments. (Had this feature been available, I might have caught the error of referring to Marina as Maria a little while ago — sorry about that.)

Other than a couple of my relationships, , I can’t think of anything else.
Please, please, please explain how the preferred name for womens bedwear and undergarments became know as lingerie? I would guess it to be a french word, but how did it get to be the preferred word? Always wondered about that.
Thanks for all you do. You make it look easy, but I know it’s not.

    • nathan19 says: 91.1

That would be interesting to learn about. I don’t know anything about its origin, but I can tell you, sugarray, that you’re right, it is a French word. That’s why I always hate people pronouncing it lawn-jur-ay, when it should be lehn-zhare-ee.

    • WLIU, I seem to remember that it was an artist’s or art teacher’s name. When using nude models for his class, he found that scantily-clad models got more of a rise (so to speeak) out of his students that did completely nude ones.

What I love to sabotage are attempts to sabotage Me and/or Mine. It behooves Me to see the would-be saboteur squirm like a grub under a rock. The only mercy they get is they are allowed to live, the only reason they get that is because prison doesn’t sound like any fun. I exagerate of course, but, there is some truth to it too. Once folks really piss Me off,and if I bother to let em know it,they don’t generally do it again for a looong time.

Mom used to say; “If You are *truly* sorry,You *won’t* do it again”. I like to make folks **feel** that statement when they do Me bad. The same goes for Me if I am the one to transgress, gimme both barrels so I learn and remember.

After 7 kids(I am #5),Mom was tired, instead of chasing Me down She would send My older brother(3 years older) to tackle Me and use His wrestling experience to “teach” Me the error of My ways. Worked pretty good too! Wrestlers can be awful nasty, especially with Mom’s blessing! Ouch!!

  23. Sup beautiful!..

Regarding some of the voters in the Sexy Geek of the Year contest:

In explaining the origin of bitch Marina focused on the meaning of bitch as

    (1) a lewd or immoral woman.

    However, bitch can also mean

    (2) a malicious, spiteful, or overbearing woman and (3) something that is extremely difficult, objectionable, or unpleasant.

    Malice has the meanings

    (1) desire to cause pain, injury, or distress to another and (2) intent to commit an unlawful act or cause harm without legal justification or excuse;

    spite has the meaning

petty ill will or hatred with the disposition to irritate, annoy, or thwart.

Since Maria lost because of heavy down-voting and the Geek that won is a male, it appears that some bitches sabotaged the voting.

  25. nathan19 says: 87

    Hey Marina,

I should have realised that sabotage hails from French, seeing as how people who engage in sabotage are called saboteurs. I’ve never actually comitted any sabotage before, but I’m still young, just give me time.

I found it very funny when you said “I’ve never sabotaged anything, except the chandelier at my…”. My mind went off on a little tangent, and I imagined an operatic story in which you and a rival philologist were struggling to gain possession of the very first Oxford English Dictionary. You and your nemesis were at some gala event where an anonymous contact was supposed to be dropping off the dictionary for your adversary, and you loosened the chandelier so it would crash during all the festivities, creating a diversion which would allow you to quietly slip out of the room and spirit the dictionary away. The whole time, you were wearing the dress that you wore in the New Years e-card that you sent us. It’s odd, but these are the things my mind spends its time dwelling on.

    • Bob says: 87.1

Sounds like your mind is a fun show to see … are you selling tickets?

    • neuroway says: 87.3

That’s an interesting one Nathan. You seem to be quite a promising youg apprentice for our teacher!

You mention the concept of nemesis, which makes me think of the hubris that is probably looking for its nemesis, like a pair of… wrestlers. Isn’t sabotage a nemesis acting upon an existing hubris?

Every nemesis seems to keep looking for an hubris to act upon, untill it finally bounces into it, just like every hubris inwardly seeks the nemesis that will put it back where it belongs. What I’m asking myself is what happens to the nemesis, once the show’s over and the hubris is down? Does it automatically morph itself into another hubris waiting for a new nemesis? Like a perpetual, never ending dance? Or does the contest end at some point in time?

I was curious on the origins of Rabelaisian. Can you please investigate? Thank you.

    • Rabelais most famous work (Wikipedia):

Gargantua and Pantagruel tells the story of two giants – a father, Gargantua, and his son, Pantagruel – and their adventures, written in an amusing, extravagant, and satirical vein.

While the first two books focus on the lives of the two giants, the rest of the series is mostly devoted to the adventures of Pantagruel’s friends – such as Panurge, a roguish erudite maverick, and Brother Jean, a bold, voracious and boozing ex-monk – and others on a collective naval journey in search of the Divine Bottle.

Even though most chapters are humorous, wildly fantastic and sometimes absurd, a few relatively serious passages have become famous for descriptions of humanistic ideals of the time. In particular, the letter of Gargantua to Pantagruel and the chapters on Gargantua’s boyhood present a rather detailed vision of education.

I think sabotage can be closely related to “SAPPER”. I’d like you to investigate “SAPPER”. I used to be one.

  44. It took me a half a day to remember, but I was a saboteur. In jr. high I took a dislike to the music my sister played on her vacuum tube radio. That was a very long time ago, so I can’t remember my thought processes then, but I remember the outcome. I put a 6-32 screw in an unused hole in the tuning capacitor, which acted as a stop to prevent tuning in the top bit of the capacitor’s rotation; it prevented her from tuning in her favorite station. I don’t know why, but it only took her about 1.2 seconds to blame me for the radio’s new behavior*. I got a spanking. That part of my memory is still sharp and uh, painfully clear.

I still have that radio somewhere.

    —-
*I suppose I should take that as a kind of complement.

I want to thank all of you for voting for Marina which shows up significantly in this graph. Despite the almost twice as many subscribers that Phil has, we are showing a great strength of force and making an attack on first place.

We need about 4,384 votes to catch up to Phil in terms of combined up-down votes. Looks like some good New Year’s partying going on as the voting has slowed up some, but please don’t let up now, and please continue to vote.

    ***WORD REQUEST: Mick and Mack***
“Hey Mack!” is (or used to be) slightly rude slang for “Hello Mister.”
“Mick” is slang for an Irishman.
What is the origin of these two words, and are they related?
(Hint: Think “MacDonald” and “McCarthy.”)

  49. danielpool says: 62

HI Marina in star trek you would be a pretty Vulcan and your sister would be a pretty Klingon. I heard on the radio one time a man saying that Klingon and Vulcan are a language now that two college students made up one time if you get a chance look in to it. It was very interesting

    • John says: 62.1

they wouldn’t be sisters they would be very very distant cousins as one was an off shoot( parent ) of the other race.

      • perhaps they were half sisters like Spock :?:

        • alex says: 62.1.1.1

          umm. how would that work?
one sister could be totally vulcan (both parents being vulcan), but then her sister must be at least half-vulcan.
or, mother non-vulcan and non-klingon, fathers vulcan and klingon. in any way, they’d not be totally klingon and totally vulcan.
if you want that non-vulcan and non-klingon mother to be human … well, that should be difficult as humans and vulcans are not really compatible.
plus, vulcans and klingons? — no way.

          • I had to reply to your reply below here, I am sure that you are correct there was some medical assistance involved in Spocks birth also’ however with the Vulcans mental abilities they could have probably achieved the results without any foreign chemicals being introduced into the mother’s body, other then the obvious.

        • John says: 62.1.1.2

Spock was half human his mother was human his father was Vulcan.

I’ve had friends who were saboteurs, of sorts. One blew up a high school swimming pool heater that resulted in major damage to a building, and another friend purposely derailed a railroad engine, while a couple of others, both mechanics, instructed me on how to sabotage vehicles. Yet, I’ve never done any of that stuff. I’m constructive not destructive, but there were times where I seriously considered sabotaging certain vehicles. The mood passes.

    Hello dear Marina.

I have a word I want to know the origin of: GRINGO.

Yep. If you can tell me what’s the origin of this word , it would be really appreciated I’m sure on an international level…..!
As far as I know all gringos know the word, It is not a derogatory word, it is just a word to refer to north american people, not Canadians only gringos.
What better than a Russian girl to solve this international mystery :)

I hope you can find the truth origin and meaning of this word, good luck.

    Luis.

    • Evan Owen says: 60.1

      Verdad o no, no sé.

    • bavid says: 60.2

Luis and Evan, Im mexican, and my entire life we, mexicans, refer to americans as “gringos” and as I know its because of that song.

I didn’t know that this word was known around the world.. I thought it was a mexican expression.
It will be great if Marina solve this mistery..!!

      Happy New Year!!

      :)

  52. Happy 2009, Marina!

I don’t I ever deliberately sabotaged anything, but I’ve unintentionally ruined a few things mechanical, usually trying to take them apart. I remember doing that to my great aunt’s vacuum, and trying to hide the evidence. Felt very bad about it, and confessed it years later to her.

Anyway, that was a great explanation of the word!

So, at the risk of opening up a can of worms for you, I have a Portuguese word request for you. You see, I love Brasilian (or in English, Brazilian) music and language; I speak a great deal of Portuguese, my self… So, can you tell me the etymology of the word, saudade (pronounced souw-DA-gee). I understand it to be homesickness or extreme yearning. I have heard it in so many Brasilian songs that I actually have grown to like this word a lot; much like one would like a song  I’ll save my next Portuguese word “pra outro dia” (prA OH-troo GEE-ah) [for another day]!

The Norwegian Heavy Water Sabotage had to be one of the best sabotages.

Norwegian saboteurs during World War II to prevent the German nuclear energy project from acquiring heavy water, which could be used to produce nuclear weapons.(Wiki)

    • Evan Owen says: 40.1

      Hi Che,
They made a movie out of that story called The Heroes of Telemark (1965, with Kirk Douglas.)

      • Did see a documentary a while back on the History Channel, I suspect the History Channel used this movie as a reference in its research.

      • Bob says: 40.1.2

I haven’t seen that one, but I did watch 633 Squadron again over Christmas (The best of the repeats).
It was a raid on a German rocket fuel factory in a Norwegian fjord where almost every aircraft was lost, because the Norwegian resistance saboteurs, who were going to put the anti-aircraft guns out of action, were all ambushed and killed.
In spite of that, the raid was a military success because the earthquake bombs caused a rock-slide which buried the factory.

  72. wordreet says: 39

Ha ha! Sabotage, throwing a shoe in the works!

Dear Marina, I was wondering if you’d like to investigate the origin of the saying, “Hoist with your own petard.” ? It’s not much in use these days, but was one of my fathers pet phrases.

Whatever you decide, you have my best wishes.

    :-)

    • Bob says: 39.1

      I second that request.
What on earth is a petard, anyway?

      • I always thought that it was that loop at the top of a boot used to gain purchase in pulling the boot on. The rediculous idea was that by pulling hard enough, one could lift oneself by one’s own boots. But a petard is not that at all, even though the thought is parallel. Petard = bomb, with the user being blown up by his own device.

        PET
        Automatic
        Retrieval
        Device

Make up your own story about getting caught up in one.

Sabotage is a one trick pony ma’am. I’d say it’s better to grab it firmly but gently by its little tail before letting it go, aim carefully, and think twice before throwing the show, as it can have quite a devastating domino effect once let loose.

  74. Sabotage-oh-lay! Maybe 4 Annudder-day! He He He!

    Happy New Year Marina,
    (and everyone else here)

I have never sabotaged anything; at least not on purpose.

Do you have any Olivier Salad left?
I’m hungry, and the traditional greens and black eyed peas meal is just not my favorite holiday tradition here.

  76. Dear HotForWords,

You see, the reason I don’t have a job anymore is, they made me wear these awful wooden shoes…

    Your Student,

  77. All right my niece just brought me some blackeyed peas and cornbread for good luck in the New Year. Does anyone else have have a traditional food they enjoy on New Years day for good luck. If so please write them in the comments replies below.

    Thank You

  78. I haven’t personally every engaged in Sabotage. I am more of a troubleshooter.

This lesson begs me to ask, Has the devil ever danced with creator/designer by the pale moon light?

    Hi Marina,
Just got back from the Polar Bear swim. As my body hit the water, I wondered:
    Is “холодно” cognate with “cold”?

  80. Can you define the words “internet” and “diet”? thanks!

  81. The French worker who threw his shoes into the works either had to bring an extra pair of shoes to work or he would have to walk home barefooted. Either way, it would draw attention to himself.

I heard of a mainframe manufacturer field engineer who had sabotaged a main frame computer back in the 60s. A team of engineers worked for over a week before they realized that everything was not working. He had taken hundreds of straight pins, removed the heads and jammed them into he many cables connecting the parts of the machine. They got the point.

    No, not deliberately!
I really don’t think you can say that you’ve sabotaged a chandelier.
Unless you rigged it on purpose, and in that case, I’d like to hear all about it! :D

  87. Is that what the iraqi journalist did to bush when he visited iraq last month. He sabotaged the W Bush, who couldn’t understand why the man might have had a problem with him.

    The Kiss of Sabotage.

    Never intentionally sabotaged anything.
Broke lotsa stuff but never sabotaged.

Well in the military I guess I sabotaged my adversary’s attempts and plans to win battles and wars.

Marina, this chandelier, Is this the one you got your bottom paddled for?

mukmika brings up a good question.
What’s the difference between vandalism and sabotage?

  95. Bob says: 14

I’ve never knowingly sabotaged anything but I have clogged up the works on occasions.

    • true story: i was on a three-city trip with a colleague to lead some required volleyball clinics for juniors (12-18); we stopped overnight at a hotel the association had reserved for us…we had had a big supper, it was late, and i just wanted to go the bathroom and get to sleep…

being my normal Mr. Nice Guy, i let my buddy go first…he took his sweet bippy time and my toes were beginning to curl from the need to use the facilities…

finally he came out – only to tell me, “‘er, i clogged up the toilet”…

he had…dammit…and nothing could be done about it…even worse was that there was no bathroom fan, the room was small, and let’s just say that his stink was stronger than chicken that’s been left in the garbage for a week…

it was so late the hotel office was locked up…i won’t discuss how i managed my way through the rest of the night…

I had a chief pilot who used to do that to us; we were staying on a logging camp in the middle of Borneo and normally each pilot had his own room in the crew bungalow, but when this chap used to come on inspection, he would commandeer one room so the pilots had to double up.
The facilities were not the best quality, being out in the jungle, and there was a small bore squat toilet in each bathroom, adjoining each room, which required that you nipped it off in small chunks rather like rabbit droppings. Well, this idiot always shaved off a full length of the Doner Kebab and, since he had an asshole like a truck tire, it was an instant blockage, and then he would come and ask to use ours.
He should have been a mud engineer – they could have used him to plug blow-outs on the oil rigs.
Eventually we fixed him by saying that our toilet was already blocked, so he had to go do it in the river. The locals said they’d never seen crocodiles that far upstream before.

When my boss had a really bad idea I didn’t need to sabotage it; I’d just do EXACTLY what I was told and let nature take its course. The hardest part was afterwards NOT saying ‘Yeah, I know’.

  98. mukmika. says: 11

Probably a lot more people have engaged in vandalism than sabotage. Somehow, I can’t picture you engaging in sabotage, Marina! Great video, as usual.

I’m not sure if everyone heard this or not, but Nurse Chapel died on Dec 18. I found out some other facts about her that I did not realize; she was Roddenberry’s wife, played the character Number One in the pilot, and she played the part of Consoler Troi’s mom.

  105. hs4mm says: 2

I hear him saying sabatage (a, not o, after b; and one a after t) — the text in the second video has “sabataage”. Also, I think the ‘a’ after the ‘b’ is echoed by the ‘a’ after the ‘t’ giving the impression of a double ‘a’ after the ‘t’.
